There are always heart-warming stories that emerge from tragic events and the Oklahoma Tornado was no exception. An old lady was being interviewed live on television; she and her dog had been sheltering from the storm in her bathroom, but had been separated in the mayhem. She was, understandably upset. During the interview, incredibly the dog’s face appeared in a hole in the rubble. It tickled me to death that

Tenerife Weekly - 24th May - 30th May 2013 the lady, Barbara Garcia, told off the reporting team after they carried on filming, instead of helping her dog get out from under the rubble. With an attitude like that, I have no doubt that the residents of Moore will recover and rebuild itself anew. Summer is nearly here and many parents out there will be wondering what on earth to do with their offspring during the long summer holidays. One brilliant idea is being run again this year by Amarilla Golf. For the whole of July, they are holding week long summer camps for your little “angels”. Featuring golf, swimming

and horse riding lessons, it will ensure that everyone, A, gets some peace, and B, a good night’s sleep! Full details are on page 11. Does anyone have any idea how to manage Zebra Finch reproduction? Is there a contraceptive available that we can grind up in their food? Regular readers will remember we started off with 6, back in October; the number grew and has continued ever since. We now have 28. They are driving our cat’s bananas!!! See you all next week.

Let’s Hear It For The Canary Islands

By Colin Kirby

The first appeals of fines issued under the Plan Especial went to Court last Thursday. Before the hearing, however, the judge called Alotca lawyer José Escobedo and the Government’s lawyer into a meeting. Also present were a legal assistant from Tenerife Litigation (the office of the two Alotca lawyers, José Escobedo and Santiago Saenz), and the two chief Turismo inspectors.

The judge confirmed that Canarian law is valid, and applicable, to these cases of fines against individuals for private holiday rentals. He also confirmed that previous judgments concerning “prior authorization” have no relevance at all to them. The judge requested the meeting because he had certain things to say in general terms about the specific cases being heard, and others like them still to come to hearing. These were that he considered the fine amount to be disproportionate - proportionality of punishment is written into the Spanish constitution; that Alotca lawyers had prepared a strong and detailed defence; that the Government nonetheless had

a case that could be developed during a hearing; that such cases would take a considerable time to hear; and there were so many of them that Court time would be inordinate. As a result, he had consulted with other judges and it had been decided that all cases would be heard by that same judge through the one Court, number 4 in Santa Cruz. Having made these comments, the judge then asked that a class action be formed for an out of Court settlement which would apply to all the appeals underway at present. Since Alotca has the vast majority of cases to be heard, and was behind the first appeals to be heard, the class action is to be conducted through Alotca, with cases being handled by other lawyers forming part of the Alotca action. The settlement will require a document to be signed by the appellants acknowledging that they had been in error, that this error had resulted in a breach of the law, that they accept a fine as punishment, and, naturally, confirm that there will be no future breaches. The document will stand as a legal judgment so that even with an out of Court settlement, any future fines arising from continued letting would be at the second offence level of

up to 30,000 Euros. The Government has been given a month to liaise with José Escobedo and Santiago Saenz to negotiate the settlement, involving the final document to be signed and the level of the fine: the judge said that in his opinion, it would reasonably be in the region of 5,000 Euros. The Court provided José Escobedo with a list of all cases involving other lawyers, and any appellant with a nonAlotca lawyer who wishes to join the class action must instruct their lawyer urgently to contact Tenerife Litigation so that their cases can be presented to Court as part of that action. Those who are already with one of the two Alotca lawyers need do nothing. José and Santiago expect to hear directly from lawyers of those who have been fined and who are to join the class action.. On a wider basis, Alotca is about to start negotiations with the OCU (organización de consumidores y usuarios), the Spanish Consumers Organization, which is preparing to fight the recently announced national proposals to limit tourist letting throughout Spain. The fight is very far from over, but with regard to the fines issued so far, at last there is clarity.

Next Thursday, 30th May, is a special day across the seven islands, Dia de Canarias is the national day of celebration and many events will be taking place here in Tenerife. Arona is taking a long run up with Folklore & Traditions of the Canaries, a week long exhibition showcasing music, dance, and culture.

The event openes on Wednesday and each day from 10 am to 9pm stalls outside the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre will be full of arts and crafts. Inside the Cultural Centre photo and art displays will depict proud moments from history, and outside the stage will be buzzing each evening with musical performances and games. It all reaches a climax at 10pm on Wednesday 29 May from 10pm when the Baile de Magos takes place in the plaza outside the Cultural Centre with traditional costumes, music, and dance. There will also be a competition for the best pastries and cakes, a good excuse for you to buy some samples from the nearby stalls, be warned they are exceptionally nice. The music and dance will go on into the early hours of Thursday, the national

holiday, and you can expect outbreaks of traditional dance throughout the Dia de Canarias. One of the early celebrations will be the Voices of the Canaries at Plaza de La Camella in the hills above Los Cristianos, this starts at 11.30am with local group Agrupacion Folcloria Abruncos and soloists Miriam Cruz and Vicky Lopez.

norway pride on Los Cristianos promenade By Colin Kirby

Valuation Company Tinsa has reported that the Balearic and Canary Islands were the only regions in Spain where house prices increased in April over the previous year – an increase of 3.3% versus an average 10.5% decline for the rest of the country. The european environmental education Foundation (ADeAC) has awarded 46 blue flags to Canarian beaches in 2013, one more than last year; 14 of them are in Tenerife, 2 fewer than last year. Tenerife’s blue flag beaches for 2013 are: El Médano and La Jaquita in Granadilla de Abona; Troya I-II, El Duque and Fañabé in Adeje; Playa La Arena, Playa de Los Guíos and the Los Gigantes sports harbour in Santiago del Teide; El Arenisco in La Laguna; El Socorro in Los Realejos; San Telmo and Complejo Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz; La Arena (Mesa del Mar) in Tacoronte; and Playa San Juan in Guía de Isora. This means that Arona has lost its blue flags from 2012 for Las Vistas, Los Cristianos and El Camisón, but Playa La Arena’s award makes it the 26th consecutive year that the beach has won a blue flag. Spanish overproduction and competition of bananas has caused low prices for Canary Islands bananas, and in turn caused some dissatisfaction in regard to the low prices of bananas during the 2013 campaign. “This is because production exceeds demand,’’ says Ricardo Torres, manager of FAST. Normally, banana consumption drops as soon as the summer fruit reaches the market. Then the price of bananas is kept low. At this time the banana consumption in Spain remains high with an estimated 525,000 tons of bananas. Ricardo Torres states that, “due to the low production in the banana producing countries, import bananas have a significantly lower price compared to the Spanish version. Fortunately, 9 out of 10 Spanish consumers prefer the Spanish banana, although the crisis leads people to buy as cheaply as possible.” It is expected that the banana on the Canary Islands and in other countries is slowly gaining ground. “We handle it strategically, with public campaigns, just as we did in Spain.” However, Ricardo indicates that people are trying to get EU support in order to cope with the competition against the African banana, which is gaining ground in terms of production and exports. The historian Nicolás González Lemus of the Cabildo of Tenerife has proposed that Paul McCartney be declared a distinguished visitor of Tenerife and to invite him back to the Island, 50 years after he last visited with Ringo Starr and George Harrison visited Puerto de la Cruz. The proposal has been supported by Ashotel (Association hotel and first-class of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro), who feel that it would be an element of tourism promotion and strengthen links with United Kingdom. The anniversary of The Beatles visit featured lectures, concerts, conferences and exhibitions organized by the Institute of Hispanic Studies of the Canary Islands. The parish of Saint ursula is already preparing for the big Corpus Christi day. The making of the carpets will be organised entirely by the parish of Saint Ursula, and will start on the evening of Friday, May 31, in the parish of St. Bartholomew and June 1 at 8 a.m. in the morning in the parish of Saint Ursula. This year there is a Twitter account, #Sucorpuschristi in which all updates will be added. More information about the event will is also available at www.parroquiasantaursula.es A 47-year-old La Palma man, originally from Barcelona and identified as Enrique V.L., tried to hold up an Orocar local in the Playa de las Vistas area on Monday afternoon. Failing in the attempt, he then tried to attack five women on the promenade, holding a knife to the throat of some of them. Their screams alerted an off-duty local policeman from Santa Cruz, who chased the man, and with the help of a couple of Arona local police officers managed to subdue him. He is now being processed by the authorities, accused of attempted robbery with violence and intimidation, death threats, and wounding.

The flags of Norway, Arona, The Canary islands, and Spain fluttered in the sea breeze as the local community came together to celebrate 17th May, Norway’s national day of celebration. The Scandinavian church, formerly Casa Sueca, at the eastern end of the old beach was the focal point as over 100 local Norwegians were joined by a Canarian youth orchestra and a colourful collection of national costumes, flags, and toy horns for the smaller revelers.

Norway’s vice consul in the Canary Islands, Toril Merete Wulff, explained the history behind the national day. “Originally Norway was under Danish rule but was released to Sweden in 1814, our country formed its constitution then and eventually in 1905 we gained full independence but the annual celebrations had already started to mark the constitution.” Tenerife has long been a favourite of the Scandinavians since the Swedish started to bring patients to Los Cristianos in the 1950’s to enjoy the healing qualities of the climate. Norwegians are now one of the biggest groups of visitors as the consul stated. “ In Santa Cruz province (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro) there are 800 Norwegian residents registered with the consul but during the popular months of October to April that increases to several thousand and new services this year will bring 280 flights a month at peak times.” The parade set off along the promenade stopping where the roads converge

at the port beach near Plaza del Pescadora. National songs were sung with great enthusiasm and even the smallest members of the parade waved their flags with immense pride. Heading up to the church plaza and down past Hotel Reveron they wound their way back to their own church and were greeted by Arona councilor for culture Miguel Angel Mendez Fernandez before enjoying a group meal.

Who was the Black Madonna?

Of course the word Madonna has many religious connotations, especially here and for most locals Madonna refers to the virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. Also known as Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (our lady of Candelaria ) or, commonly, La Morenita. This religious icon has been worshipped since the 16th century by the Roman Catholic Church, specifically in the Basilica of Candelaria, especially during the feast of Candlemas on February 2, and also August 14-15 every year when a patronal feast is held in her honour. She is also worshipped in countries as far away as Bolivia, Columbia and Puerto Rico. So, who was she and how did the legend and worship of, begin? The official legend was recorded

back in 1594 by Alonso de Espinosa, but the story predates the “Castilian conquest” by almost 100 years. The legend goes that 2 Guanche goatherds were walking along the beach at Güímar, then known as Chimisay, when they came across a carved statue with very dark skin, bearing a baby in her right hand and a green candle in her left (giving the area its name-Candelaria). Highly superstitious and not knowing what the object was, one goatherd attempted to throw it back into the sea but found his arm had become paralysed, the other drew his knife and tried to stab the statue only to end up stabbing himself. The men then took the statue to the local Mencey (chief) Acayo, and it was put in the cueva de Achbinicio , also known as the cave of San Blas. The statue it was decided was Chaxiraxi the Guanche Sun God, mother of all gods, and her son Chijoraji. It was only later when a Guanche named Anton, who had been enslaved by Castilians and converted to Christianity, returned and iden-

tified the statue as the Virgin Mary. The statue was venerated by the Guanches who believed she had the ability to cure illness and was seen as a protector of land and sea, until at some point before the arrival of the Spanish; it was stolen and ended up in Lanzarote. However legend tells that so many strange happenings were attributed to the statue whilst in Lanzarote, it was hurriedly returned to Tenerife where it remained in the cave until, in 1526, and the Spanish conquerors built a church for her in front of the cave. In a suitably mysterious end to the legend, the statue disappeared in much the same way it arrivedin 1826 a tidal wave breached the church and swept her back into the ocean, never to be seen again. So, that’s the story from her arrival to her disappearance, but where did she originally come from? Black Madonna’s, or Black Virgins are associated with early gothic medieval Europe and their appearance is often attributed to either an attempt to match the indigenous population of the area it was

5

sculpted- or; “various art forms that have turned black as a result of certain physical factors such as: deterioration of lead-based pigments; accumulated smoke from the use of votive candles; and accumulation of grime over the ages.” Many other religions have laid claim to her, including Hindu (the goddess Kali), Brazilian Candomblé (Oshun), and Andean religions (Pachamama-Mother Earth). Scientists that have studied the subject believe that she may have been connected to the mysterious Knights Templar and the Priory of Sion, as to how she ended up here will remain a mystery. The most mysterious of all though has to be the strange inscriptions found all over the original statue which to this day, the meanings are still unknown: Girdle in the neck: ETIEPESEPMERI On the left sleeve: LPVRINENIPEPNEIFANT At the bottom of the robe: EAFM IPNINI FMEAREI In the belt: NARMPRLMOTARE In the mantle, in the right arm: OLM INRANFR TAEBNPEM Reven NVINAPIMLIFINIPI NIPIAN At the edge of the left hand: EVPMIRNA ENVPMTI EPNMPIR VRVIVINRN APVI MERI PIVNIAN NTRHN On the back in the queue: NBIMEI ANNEIPERFMIVIFVE Candelaria is a fascinating place to visit, The Basilica of Candelaria is beautiful, built in 1959, the original 1668 Basilica was destroyed in a fire. It has a copy of the original statue, dressed in richly coloured jewelled robes by Fernando Estevez, the 18th century Canarian sculptor. The 9 huge bronze statues of the Guanche leaders, mounted on volcanic plinths are impressive and imposing and behind the Basilica you can enter the original cave, La Cueva de Achbinicio where pilgrims still visit, leaving candles by the bronze replica of that mysterious statue of the Black Madonna. Discover it for yourself; it’s a great day out!

dogs on The Beach

www:janetanscombe.com MANY dog owners feel that Tenerife’s blanket ban on dogs being allowed on the island’s beaches is extreme, and say that although they understand the issues, one beach at least could be opened for dog use. Some have even suggested that such a beach could be avidly policed so as even to be profitable for the authorities, with fines for dog owners who are irresponsible in one way or another. These owners may now feel there is some hope in a project in Gran Canaria which has a beach, Playa de Boca barranco, in the Jinámar area, dedicated to the play, sea bathing and exercise of dogs.

The Gran Canarian authorities say that this is a pioneering initiative in the Canaries and is aimed at improving the coexistence of pets and residents. The space available for dogs is some 6,000 square

metres of beach chosen because its natural environment allows a natural cleansing of the area – though manual cleaning will also take place as well, and owners are required to clean up any dog mess left by their own pets, for which three receptacles are provided. The beach was opened last week by the Councillor for Care of the Sea, Mimi González; the president of the Las Palmas Vets College, Manuel Morales; the director of the island animal refuge, Rosa González; and representatives of various collective and animal protection associations. The beach is now added

to the six other areas of the Gran Canaria capital which are already animal friendly, namely Parque Alonso Quesada, Plaza de Canarias, Parque de Las Rehoyas, Parque Juan Pablo II, Parque San Telmo and Parque Manolo Millares. In all of these, use is dedicated to dogs that are correctly vaccinated and identified, treated for parasites, and in the company of an adult in control of them: those classified as potentially dangerous must be kept on a lead and be muzzled. h t t p : / / w w w. j a n et a n s combe.com/news/gran-canaria-capital-opens-dedicated-dog-beach.html

Tenerife Association for Mental Health

The Department of social services in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona has signed an agreement with the Tenerife Association for Mental Health (ATELSAM) in order to give a classroom especially for the development of activities for people disabled by mental illness. The head of Department, Ana Esther Flores Ventura, recently signed the agreement with the President and

the Director of this group, Julo Fernando Sanchez and Victoria Adrián Alonso, respectively, which will allow continuation of the service whereby María de las Casas will be given a classroom in the socio-cultural centre in Granadilla.

The Socialist Mayor said that they were answering demands for this essential resource within the municipality and helping the rehabilitation of 15 people with such disabilities through the service offered by

the occupational Centre. Through this provision, says Flores Ventura, they will develop, as well as receive rehabilitation, training, activities in the field of employment and social integration: “In order to achieve the full socio-labour integration of this group of people”. According to the representatives of ATELSAM, this type of activity falls within the parameters of the Plan Insular rehabilitation psychosocial Tenerife (PIRP). The Granadilla Town hall is a pioneering supporter for the programme and has been working with ATELSAM since 2002”.

Certificados de Registro – An Update

www.janetanscombe.com

Confusion has reigned in recent months over the supposed requirement to renew Certificados de Registro, colloquially called green certificates, and sometimes incorrectly known as “residencias”. It appears that an error originated in the southern comisaría in Playa de Las Américas, the only one in Spain where such a mistake was made, with resident expats being informed that their Certificados de Registro had to be renewed every five years even if they bore no expiry date, and indeed even if they stated that they were “permanente”.

Where there is no confusion, however, is with regard to the actual rules themselves. Spain requires all foreigners resident in the country for more than three months to register as such. When they comply with this requirement they are given a Certificado de Registro to confirm that they have done so. Under EU law, Spain is entitled to impose this requirement, but under that same EU law, once a foreigner has registered, they cannot be required to do so again. Moreover, once EU nationals have legally resided in a fellow EU state for five years, they are entitled to permanent residence there. Spain has national laws that comply with these EU regulations. Madrid has now confirmed that the only legislative change in the last year or so has been for new applicants who, since March last year, have to prove

they either have employment or, if not, can afford to live in Spain, and that they have cover for healthcare, either in the form of private medical insurance, or for pensioners, a certificate from their home EU country providing state cover in Spain - for UK pensioners, this is the S1, formerly E121. Existing Certificados de Registro, however, do not need to be renewed. Those which have an expiry date will have been issued to applicants who had not been in Spain for five years at the point of application: when the expiry date is reached, residents may exchange them for ones that state they are permanent if they prefer, hence the police being prepared to issue renewals, but no-one is required

to do so. There is a communiqué to this effect from the Comisaría General de Extranjería y Fronteras, i.e. the highest authority of the police stations that have Extranjería sections for issuing registration certificates etc., and it can be downloaded from www.janetanscombe.com to be carried with the Certificado de Registro for anyone who feels safer with this back-up. Hopefully, though, Madrid will already have been in touch with Playa de las Américas to confirm, or to ensure for the future, that the rules are being followed correctly, and that resident foreigners are no longer told that they need to renew a certificate where no such requirement exists.

In terms of the objectives of this Centre, include the rehabilitation activities with the development of the individualized plans of care for each person and training activities through a specific programme in-

7

cluding ceramics, cross training in computer science and ecological agriculture. Training will be given regarding employment and labour and social integration, as well as leisure and free time activities.

We are almost halfway through the year and already we have seen lots of romerías (pilgrimages held in honour of the Virgin Mary or a patron saint), colourful fiestas and hosted the largest and liveliest carnival – so spectacular that it is said to rival Rio.

Just as Tenerife has the carnival season we also seem to have the ‘romería season’ between May and October, so what other festivals are in store for the remainder of the year? June is quite busy with the Romería de San Antonio de Padua taking place in many towns and villages although mainly in the south of the island as he is the patron saint of Granadilla. The Pilgrimage to San Isidro which many celebrate in May also spills over into the new month and of course perhaps the most famous of Tenerife’s religious festivals this month is Corpus Christi. Vast, intricate coloured

carpets of flower petals and volcanic sands are laid out in the streets of La Orotava but also in Adeje. The Fiesta del Carmen is celebrated in July in honour of Our Lady, the patron saint of fishermen. During the celebration, the statue of Mary is carried from the chapel to the beach where boats adorned with coloured flags sound their horns. Dancers with ribbons also take part in the procession which is followed by another excuse for a fabulous firework display. The most spectacular event can be found in Puerto de La Cruz although there are lesser events in many fishing communities around the island. In August there seems to be a romería every weekend from the Virgen del Candelaria (the patron saint of the island) which attracts thousands of pilgrims many of whom spend the night before walking the roads that lead to Candelaria. There is the immensely popular Romería de San Roque in Garachico and the unusual “Los Corazones de Tejina” (Hearts of Tejina) where enormous hearts made of

flowers and fruit are at the centre of the celebrations that attract visitors from all over the island. While the last two are in the north there are still plenty of events to enjoy in the south. Both Alcalá and La Caleta celebrate the Nuestra Senora de Candelaria again taking the virgin down to the sea which is followed by lots of activities including traditional music, stalls and of course the ubiquitous firework displays. Festivities in honour of Christ of La Laguna are held during the month of September and the 14th is a holiday in the municipality. The festival program is packed with both religious and cultural events and lots of the parties naturally ending with firework displays Towards the end of October there is the Pilgrimage of Adeje. Many visitors who come to the southern resorts are surprised by this traditional Canarian party with carts, oxen, dancing to timples (a Canarian stringed instrument) and chácaras (Canarian castanets). And finally before the Christmas rush we have the Fiesta de San Andrés, although Puerto does it to a lesser degree, the most famous events take place in Icod de los Vinos in November. The name translates to Place of Wine and produces some of the best wine on the island. During this fiesta the young people slide down the steep streets on greased pinewood boards, a reminder of when the wine barrels were rolled out. Each family opens up its cellar and the new wine is tasted. In addition, to national holidays each municipality has its own two days, that it chooses to set aside for fiestas (many of these can change each year) but, if you plan carefully you can spend almost all your time visiting local fiestas.

THe greAT LIVe ArICo pAWs gIVe-AWAY

Remember back in March we told you about a large donation of dog food which was returned unused from the Fasnia refuge? Well, after some thought we decided the best thing to do with it would be to give it away to more needy refuges on the island. in fact, we added to the 135 sacks and made it 300, that’s 6,000 kilos of food that was donated out, on a ratio basis determined by the amount of dogs housed in those refuges.

We also gave much needed food to organisations and private people who foster animals at home, like Animal Help and Sano y Asalvo. The largest refuge on the Island is Adepac in El Sauzal, so they took the lion’s share of 139 sacks. 28 sacks went to Adanca Candelaria, 21 to K9, and 18 to Esperanza de Sur. Other beneficiaries were Animal help and Sano y Asalvo (35 sacks plus food for their rescue turtles!!), MADAT (11 sacks), San Francisco de los Animales (7 sacks), Mirna de Arico (23 sacks), Dingo Dogs (5 sacks), Candy Raya (6 sacks), Guaza Mountain dogs (2 sacks) and the rest to independent foster carers. We also bought 100 Euros of specialist food for the dogs with Judith Noble in the Santiago del Teide branch of San Francisco. We sincerely hope that the donations

made a little difference to those who received them, and eased the financial burden somewhat.

For THe LoVe oF rose......

Remember Rose, the little dog left tied up on the Los Cristianos sea front in January, with a sign saying, “I am on the street, please take me with you” ? Well, at 10 years old she was very ill, and years of poor diet had left her with terrible teeth, cholesterol and a bad heart. However, with vetinary treatment and TLC from Live Arico’s Siobhan, Rose has now found her forever home with a lady called Rachel and is quite the princess. She has had her final check up and although she will never win any races she is a lot healthier and more active. She remains on her low calorie diet, with a personalised toothbrush and imported doggie toothpaste for her sensitive teeth. Live Arico will remain responsible for the future vet care of Rose as her health and age went against her, but she is much loved where she is, and last week managed the walk from Mare Verde down to the beach without having to be carried. A total of 465 Euros was donated for Rose’s care, and special thanks go to Vanessa Cloutt and the customers of Lorraine Dunlop and Studio 5’s Andrea for providing the bulk of this. 211 Euros was spent on Rose, so many others were helped with the extra money including Mutley and Smokey (PetsAtHome foster dogs), Roxi

(a Guaza mountain pup), some feral kittens and their mother, Lady (PetsAtHome dog adopted by Vanessa Cloutt), an injured male feral cat, and not forgetting Sebastian the Arona Life Guards dog. Rose captured the hearts of many, all was well in the end and others were helped along the way... good work.....

Forever Living - Cellulite

CeLLuLiTe – the one accessory that we women do not need but unfortunately the one that most of us have! There are many reasons for the appearance of cellulite, an imbalance in hormonal activity and high levels of oestrogen can both contribute to the development of cellulite together with poor diet and lack of exercise. It can also be caused by a breakdown in the vascular system. (Try Forever’s Nature-Min, Absorbent C and A-Beta-Care to help improve circulation!) Last week I did a very successful product launch at the Origins Wellness Gym in Callao Salvaje and whilst there got talking to Judith (the resident sports therapist) about the dreaded “orange peel look!” that seems to invade our hips, thighs and bottoms and she mentioned that she offers a 55 minute “Cellulite Blasting” treatment - a great way to kick start preparation for your summer bikini body! Follow this up at home with the Forever Living Aloe Body Toning Kit designed to tone, trim and tighten up the body, consisting of Aloe Body Toner for use with the roll of plastic wrap, an Aloe Body Conditioning Crème for topi-

cal, non-wrap use plus Aloe Bath Gelee for an appealing, relaxing bath to soothe and smooth the skin, and a loofah for stimulating the skin during bathing. The Aloe Body Toner will give your skin a warm, stimulated feeling and the natural moisturisation and beautifying effects of nature’s Aloe Vera and herbal extracts, together with skin-reddening properties of natural capsicum and cinnamon oil provide an effective product. An ideal partner to the Aloe Body Toner is the Aloe Body Conditioning Crème which combined with dieting and regular exercise can help reduce the onset of cellulite. This crème helps to stimulate circulation beneath the skin

which can help to break up trapped fluid and fatty tissue. Simply just massage it in to the affected areas on a regular basis. All of the above products are available from me directly or from Judith at Origins Wellness Gym. So ladies, time to shift the cellulite, loose the orange peel look and replace that particular unwanted accessory with those new pair of shorts you bought last year and never wore! (Yes – we’ve all got them – hidden in the back of our wardrobes!) Product launches are free – so if you own a beauty salon, gym, hairdressers, nail salon please feel free to invite me along to show my products.

Mainland Oil Change For Olive Oil News In Brief The Economic Ministry have said that Spain posted a monthly trade surplus of 634.9 million euros in March, its first since records began to be kept in 1971. The monthly surplus caused the country’s accumulated trade deficit for the year to fall by 62% to 4.05 billion euros. Spain’s first-quarter exports were valued at 56.59 billion euros, up 3.9% relative to the same three-month period of 2012, while imports fell 6.9% to 60.63 billion. Spain’s export sector has been one of its strongest performers since the crisis began. A hospital in Spain lost 172 embryos, intended for use in in vitro fertilization, when a freezer leaked liquid nitrogen. The oversight angered would-be mothers, many of whom didn’t find out about the April 22nd incident until they made appointments with their doctors to have embryos implanted. An official at La Paz Hospital in Madrid said that the freezer’s nitrogen levels are checked twice a week to ensure it’s cold enough to keep the embryos frozen. Records show the freezer had last been checked five days before the leak was discovered. Only 70 of the women whose embryos were lost have been notified. La Paz has offered to allow the women to go through the egg harvesting process again free of charge, though some said they’d prefer other options. Egg harvesting requires an in-patient stay and a procedure done under general anaesthetic. A Facebook user from Spain was arrested after posting he wished the Basque separatist group ETA would bomb the Royal Palace of Zarzuela. In his status update, David Jose Duaigues Marti called the Royal family “criminals” and urged the ETA, or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, to bomb the royal palace. “If only ETA would bomb them a bit more, the gang of idiots. Long live ETA and terrorism,” he wrote. Prosecutor Fernando Burgos said the Facebook post was considered “incitement to violence” and “exaltation of terrorism,” which are both punishable with jail time in Spain. The largest marijuana drug bust ever seen involved a joint operation between Spanish and Dutch police, closed 15 indoor drug factories around the Costa del Sol. A total of 13,000 marijuana plants were seized as well as 23 properties in Holland and Spain valued at 4.4 million Euros. Police also took an assortment of luxury cars and motorcycles, valued at 1.1 million Euros, as well as a kilo of ecstasy, 24,000 Euros in cash, 2,300 Euros in fake notes and a pistol. The gang of mainly Dutch nationals used state-of-the-art ‘hydroponic’ equipment at 15 farms along the coast. The drugs were then exported to Holland, while the gang also imported ecstasy from the Netherlands to Spain. The haul came just days after officers in Algericas seized 33 tonnes of hashish in a lorry that had arrived from Tangier and was supposedly carrying melons. The haul was the biggest shipment ever to arrive in a single lorry, and double the largest previous amount seized. The driver of the lorry has been arrested. El Corte Inglés has signed a deal with Starbucks, which will see the coffee chain open a cafe at one of the department store chain’s stores in Spain. The pilot outlet will be located at El Corte Inglés´ Preciados flagship store in Madrid, and will cover an area of 1,250 sq. ft. Both firms said they will monitor the performance of the pilot outlet, and hope to expand the concept in Iberia. The two sides said they plan to introduce Starbucks in cities where the coffee chain is still not present.

The small glass jugs filled with green or gold coloured extra virgin olive oil are familiar and traditional for restaurant goers across Europe but they will be banned from 1 January 2014 after a decision taken in an obscure Brussels committee earlier this week.

From next year olive oil “presented at a restaurant table” must be in prepackaged, factory bottles with a tamper-proof dispensing nozzle and labelling in line with EU industrial standards. The use of classic, refillable glass jugs or glazed terracotta dipping bowls and the choice of a restaurateur to buy olive oil from a small artisan producer or family business will be outlawed. EU spokesman Olivier Bailly said the move is being initiated because con-

sumers often get fooled by being served cheap olive oil. “We are just making clear that when you want to have olive oil of a certain quality in a restaurant, you get exactly the one you are paying for,” Mr Bailly said. “We are just protecting consumers”, he insisted as he added that the non-refillable bottles would also improve hygiene. However the move has been criticised as further interference by unelected bureaucrats. “They should let the people decide what olive oil bottles they want to use and not dictate uniformity from the centre,” Ukip MEP Paul Nuttall said. “This ridiculous move is even contrary to their often repeated call in favour of reusing goods.” The European Commission said that a majority of the 27-member nations backed the ban, which has already been compulsory in Portugal since 2006, de-

spite early grumbles from restaurant owners. The Commission currently has no plans to impose similar rules on packaging for butter, salt, pepper or any other dinner table staples. Olive oil has been prone to widespread fraud in the EU, when cheap produce is sometimes passed off as high-end extra virgin oil from top regions. With the move, the EU wants to make sure people can be assured that have the exact product they asked for on their plate. Farmers’ federations have supported the ban: “This will ensure a high-quality product for consumers,” Rafael Sanchez de Puerta of the Copa-Cogecas Federation said. Also, by displaying the name, origins and storing conditions, “this will help to preserve the image of olive oil”, he said.

007 In “Goldfinger” Probe

Sir Sean Connery has been warned that he has six months to answer questions about a Spanish land deal or face possible arrest. Judges in Spain claim that they have been trying for three years to question the actor about the sale of his house in Marbella in 1999.

Casa Malibu was demolished and replaced with a development of more than 70 apartments and sold for an estimated £45 million. It is claimed that planning regulations stipulated that only five apartments could be built on the site. Connery, 82, and his French-born wife Micheline Roquebrune are expected to be told in writing shortly that international arrest warrants could be issued against them if they fail to co-operate. The couple were first sent a list of questions a month after Connery cited health reasons for not appearing at a court hearing in October 2010. He apologised at the time and said he would co-operate with the investigation. The court says it has heard nothing since. More than 15 people, including disgraced Marbella ex-mayor Julian Munoz and former town planning Chief Juan Antonio Roca, face being tried over the so-called “Goldfinger” probe, named af-

ter his 1964 Bond film. Both men are in jail for convictions relating to town hall corruption. The alleged crimes being investigated include money-laundering, tax evasion and town planning breaches. Roquebrune, Connery’s second wife, has previously said: “These allegations of money-laundering are nonsense. We have nothing to do with this. We sold the property and that is it.”

spAnIsH Bred pAndA’s go “HOME” TO CHINA

PANDAS “De De” and “A Bao”, two-and-a-half-yearold giant panda twins that were born in Spain, have arrived at the Chengdu Research Base of the Giant Panda Breeding in southwest China’s Sichuan Province.

“De De weighs more than 70 kg while A Bao weighs more than 80 kg. Both are in good health,” said Cai Zhigang, a member of staff at the base. They will undergo a month-long quarantine process before they make their first public appearance in China, according to the base. Their mother “Hua Zui Ba,” who was sent to Spain from Sichuan, was artificially impregnated and gave birth to the twins in September 2010. They are the first pair of giant pandas to be born overseas from artificial insemination.

The base has established panda breeding programs in collaboration with Japan, the United States, and European countries. The programs aim to increase global understanding of the endangered species’ feeding and breeding habits. According to cooperative agreements between China and Spain, cubs born to pandas that are “on loan” from China belong to China and must be returned after they reach two years of age. “De De” and “A Bao” are the 10th and 11th giant pandas to have been born overseas and been returned to China.

student sings His C.V. – Right Into A Job!

WeLL, it’s one way to get a job. unemployed journalist enzo Vizcaino took up a different type of performance art on the Barcelona Metro in Spain, by singing his resume. he has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a postgraduate diploma; Vizcaino’s credentials are excellent. But like many graduates in Spain, Vizcaino was unable to find a job.

So he came up with a novel idea, rather than printing out countless copies of his C.V., which he reasoned, would probably just end up in the bin. While a friend filmed him, Vizcaino strummed on a ukulele and serenaded commuters on the Barcelona Metro. “Degree in journalism and a master’s diploma that is folded right here, in case you’d like to see it,” he sings. “I’m the King of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Educational Reforms

T

he Spanish government has approved an educational reform emphasizing standardized tests combined with reduced spending that it says will reduce one of Europe’s highest secondary school dropout rates, and decrease the number of students being held back each year. “It’s one of the most important reforms of the conservative Popular Party government,” Education Minister José Ignacio Wert said during a press conference. A quarter of Spanish students drop out of school before graduating and 40% of students are held back, costing the state 2.5 billion euro a year. Most Spaniards are worried about the deteriorating state of Spain’s education system, but many, including a majority of students, teachers, and parents, strongly oppose the education bill because they say it will worsen, not improve education. Tens of thousands marched last week in more than 30 cities – the

latest of several massive demonstrations against the government’s policies in education – to demand the withdrawal of the bill. The reform is being imposed by the government despite the opposition of all other political parties and semi-autonomous regional governments, and is expected to be approved by the PP-controlled parliament this autumn in order to implement it in 2014’s school year. It aims to monitor students more closely through further standardized tests, to condition schools’ funds based on success in decreasing dropout rates, and to redirect students toward academic or technical careers. Critics say one of the effects of reforms is to discriminate against underprivileged students. The underlying problem is the severe spending cuts, argues the rebellious education sector, now nicknamed the Green Tide for their ability to summon tens of thousands of green-shirted marchers. Since 2009, Spain has cut more than 6.7 billion euros from its education spending and expects more in the future, decreasing investment from

a high of 5% of the gross domestic product in 2010 to 4% of GDP by 2015. The cuts are equivalent to around a 15% decrease in resources for education, even as student numbers have increased more than 5% –effectively translating into fewer teachers and more students per teacher. Meanwhile, the reforms approved will cost 400 million euros to imple-

ment over three years. The European Union has long warned Spain against spending less in education. But the government has insisted the problem is not one of resources, and has pledged to reduce the current dropout rate to 15% by 2020, regardless of the cuts. Additionally, many Spaniards are enraged over some of the provisions such as strengthening Catholic education in public schools and

Juan Carlos Banker Jailed Gives Up His Yacht

King Juan Carlos is giving up a 21-million-euro yacht named Fortuna. The 41.5-metre (136foot) yacht was donated in 2000 by the Tourism and Cultural Foundation of the Balearic Islands, in an effort to entice more holidaymakers to the Islands, but left the king open to criticism during hard times in Spain. Each refuelling of the yacht costs more than 20,000 euros.

Like other assets including the royal palaces, the luxury yacht is owned by the state and managed by the National Heritage for the use of the 75-year-old king and his family. But the king has used the yacht less frequently in recent years; his last outing was in August last year.

“The king has taken the decision to ask the National Heritage to proceed with the release of the asset,” a spokesman for the institution said. The National Heritage board must now approve the yacht’s transfer to the government, which could decide to keep it or sell it.

The former head of Spanish bank Caja Madrid became the first top banker to spend time in jail over alleged mismanagement in the financial crisis. Miguel Blesa, 65, who has links to senior members of Spain’s governing Popular Party, was held overnight in

a Madrid jail but was released after putting up 2.5 million euros bail. Judge Elpidio Jose Silva said in a written ruling that Blesa presented an “undeniable flight risk” and fixed the bail sum pending investigations of his management of the bank.

weakening the control of autonomous regional governments. The reforms favour the Catholic Church. They would divert public funds to semi-private Catholic centres and gender-segregated schools, mostly run by the Catholic Church, and reinforce the importance of religion classes in public schools. Students would steered toward religion classes and those classes would help with scholarships and graduation.

Caja Madrid was one of several old regional savings banks, many run by political appointees, which expanded during Spain’s building boom and had to be merged after the bubble burst in 2008. The judge is investigating the takeover by Caja Madrid in 2008 of the City National Bank of Florida, which was caught up in the US mortgage meltdown that year. The judge said in the ruling that he saw “reasonable indications of criminal responsibility” in that takeover. Caja Madrid paid $1.17 billion to take over the Florida bank, double what it was worth, the statement said, a sign of “very bad banking management” that posed “a systemic risk to Caja Madrid in the context of the economic crisis”. Prosecution lawyer Luis Pineda told a news conference that the takeover was carried out without authorisation from the relevant authorities. He alleged that managers of the Spanish bank could have pocketed “more than 100 million dollars in commissions” in the deal. Blesa left Caja Madrid in 2009 shortly before it was merged with six other savings banks to form Bankia, as part of a major overhaul of Spain’s financial sector. Bankia was nationalised in 2012, prompting Spain to turn to its Eurozone partners for tens of billions of euros of emergency aid to rescue the financial sector. Dozens of suspects have been questioned by a judge in a separate investigation of alleged fraud in the running of Bankia. Pineda said that with the detention of Blesa “a process of flushing out who was responsible has begun. This country needs to be reassured that people will pay for what they have done.”

Slain In The Street street when we start bussin’ our guns? You think politicians are going to die? No it’s going to be the average guy, like you, and your children. So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back so you can all live in peace.” Armed officers arrived 20 minutes after police received an emergency call about the attack and shot two men. One is said to be in a serious condition. Images of the scene showed three men lying in the street, surrounded by discarded weapons and splashes of blood. Scotland Yard’s police commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe,

typical Wednesday afternoon in Woolwich, south east London, was the scene of one of the worst atrocities seen in the UK since the July 7th 2005, bombings. Off duty soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, of 2nd Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, wearing a Help For Heroes T-shirt, was stabbed and beheaded, just meters away from a school and in front of terrified eye witnesses. The two terror suspects being

held under armed guard at hospitals in London are believed to be of a Nigerian background, police named one of the men as Michael Adebolajo, a former student at Greenwich University. Both of the men, thought to have been born in Britain, were arrested following the hacking to death of a serving soldier in the street. Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation into the “shocking and horrific” murder and the Prime Minister has held talks with his top advisers to address potential security implications. Relatives of the dead soldier are believed to have been informed but he has yet to be named. According to sources, military

commanders have told troops not to wear their uniforms until further notice. Two suspected Muslim fanatics attacked the man in the street a short distance from the Royal Artillery Barracks after apparently knocking him down with their car. Witnesses said they set about the soldier with a number of weapons, which appeared to include knives and a meat cleaver, while shouting the name of “Allah”. They apparently encouraged passers-by to video them. One of the alleged attackers was filmed wielding a bloodied meat cleaver, saying: “We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you,” he said. In another clip, the man can be heard adding: “You think David Cameron is going to get caught in the

confirmed that the two men had been arrested: “We understand concern about the motivation and we will work tirelessly to uncover why this occurred and who was responsible. I understand people want answers, but I must stress we are in the early stages of investigations,” he said.

Extra officers remained on duty in Woolwich overnight and security has been stepped up at military barracks across the capital. Forensic officers were still on the scene on Thursday morning and the area remained cordoned off. The car used in the attack was taken away during the night. After it became clear through eyewitness accounts that the attackers had political and religious motives, the Government held a socalled Cobra emergency response meeting, which will be followed by another this morning. Riot police had to contain an English Defence League demonstration in Woolwich, while elsewhere two mosques were attacked. One witness, identified as James Heneghan, said he and his partner saw two black men attack a young man of around 20 in a Help for Heroes T-shirt with kitchen knives like he was ‘a piece of meat’. They were hacking at this poor guy, literally, they were hacking at him, chopping him, cutting him.” A Facebook page in honour of the Woolwich victim, https://www.facebook.com/pages/RIP-WoolwichSoldier, has received around a million ‘likes’. The barracks, also known as the Woolwich station, is home to a number of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards. David Cameron described the attack as “truly shocking” and returned to London early from France, while the Home Secretary Theresa May said it was “sickening and barbaric”. A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The Queen is of course concerned by the report of an attack in Woolwich earlier... Her Majesty is being kept informed.” Ed Miliband MP, leader of the Labour Party, said: “This is a truly appalling murder which will shock the entire country.”

one Hell of royal Father & son Fight A Hairball! Consumer Ignorance

TY, a 28-stone tiger has gone under the knife in Florida to remove a 4lb hairball. Veterinary surgeons in Tampa Bay were called in after the tiger failed to cough up the monster obstruction all by himself.

Perhaps understandably, the 17-year-old big cat had been off his food for nearly two weeks. The vets initially performed an ultrasound and took X-rays before using a endoscope with a camera to gauge the size of the hairball. But it was so big, they determined there was no chance of retrieving it that way and an operation would be needed. Vernon Yates, founder of the Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation

SPeAKiNG at a wildlife trafficking conference at St James’s Palace, Prince Charles and Prince William have accused the increasing desire for “exotic products” of being the main cause behind a 3,000% increase in illegal wildlife trade. Prince William also highlighted the ignorance of consumers that luxury is often coupled with “barbarity”.

who take care of Ty in Seminole said: “He’s sort of like my biggest baby. This is my kid. This tiger means more to me than any cat that I have. I’m very thankful that we found what it is. That it’s not some tumour, cancerous ... because he’ll recover from this and I can’t thank enough the surgeon and doctors from BluePearl that’s worked on him,” he added. The non-profit animal rescue group generally assists Florida law enforcement with animals that have been seized.

Addressing delegates from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Wild Aid and Interpol, the Prince of Wales said: “Members of the world’s growing middle class are seeking exotic products that reflect their economic prosperity and status. We face one of the most serious threats to wildlife ever, and we must treat it as a battle, because that’s exactly what it is.” Prince Charles, who took over the presidency of WWF UK in 2011 from the Duke of Edinburgh, also spoke of his fears in the light of his daughterin-law’s pregnancy: “As a father and a soon-to-be grandfather, I find it inconceivable that our children could live in a world bereft of these endangered animals.” Poaching has increased more than

3,000% since 2007; to the extent that one rhino is killed every 11 hours. The future king was joined by his eldest son Prince William, who is patron of conservation charity Tusk Trust: “I sincerely hope that my generation is not the first on this planet to consider elephants, rhinos or tigers as historical creatures, in the same category as the Dodo,” he said. The Prince, who last year visited the rainforests of Borneo with the Duchess of Cambridge, also laid some of the blame for an upsurge in poaching with the must-have culture: “I think that the consumer deserves to know that the

illegal animal parts’ fashionable and luxurious image is at odds with barbarity of how these animal parts are obtained,” said the Prince. Prince Charles also warned of the need for a concerted effort to stamp out illegal trafficking due to the increased sophistication and violent tactics used by poachers: “In some cases, rebel militias are killing elephants, and when park rangers try to protect the animals from assault, they are often killed too. Equally disturbing, the profits from wildlife trafficking have in some cases been traced to terrorist groups.”

uNDReDS of wellwishers turned out to wave a final goodbye to the Royal Navy’s former flagship hMS Ark Royal on her last voyage before being scrapped. The aircraft carrier and former flagship of the Royal Navy fleet, which was formally decommissioned in 2011, was towed out of Portsmouth harbour watched by a crowd of onlookers.

Ark royal Final Goodbye

People lined the beach harbour walls in Portsmouth to catch a final glimpse of the warship as she left her home base today. A flotilla of small boats sailed with the Ark Royal as she was pulled by tug boats from the harbour. The tugs sounded their horns as the crowds, some waving flags, stood in silence as the huge ship sailed past. She is being towed to Turkey, to the same shipyard in Leyal that stripped down her sister ship, HMS Invincible; she will be broken up by a ship recycling firm. The deal is worth £2.9m. Ark Royal saw active service based in the Adriatic during the Balkans War and in the Gulf for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. She was decommissioned as a result of the Strategic Defence and Security Review in 2010, in a move that was,

19

and still is to a certain degree, widely criticised as it leaves the UK without carrier capability until the new HMS Elizabeth is ready later this decade. The Harrier jets that flew off Ark Royal were sold to the US. The 22,000-ton Ark Royal — the fifth Royal Navy ship to bear the name — was launched in 1981 and was known affectionately by crew as The Mighty Ark. Harrier jump jets flying from her deck were crucial in the peace-keeping operation that ended the Bosnian war in the 1990s. The carrier also sailed to the Persian Gulf for the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and was given a hero’s welcome when she returned to Portsmouth. A Royal Navy spokesman said: “Ark Royal, like her sister ships, served this country with great distinction. “Retiring her five years earlier than planned was a difficult decision but it was the right one that, combined with her sale, has saved over a hundred million pounds. A decommissioning ceremony was held in March 2011 to pay tribute to her 31 years’ service with the Royal Navy.” Various options had been considered for Ark Royal’s future, including a Hong Kong nightclub, a heliport for London and the possibility of sinking her off the Devon coast for divers to enjoy. They were all rejected by the Ministry of Defence as “not feasible or appropriate”.

good night new rooney Mick McManus

WReSTLiNG star, Mick McManus, one of the top stars in the 1960s and 1970s, has died. he headlined big shows against rival Jackie Pallo in an era when millions watched the sport on television. Wrestling was hugely popular in between the early 1960s and late 1970s because the sport had a regular 40-minute slot before the Saturday afternoon football results on iTV.

The wrestler, who had a number of nicknames including ‘The Man You Love To Hate’, made more TV appearances than any other wrestler in a career which spanned more than 20 years. Mr McManus’s death was confirmed by Frank Rimmer, the organiser of the annual British Wrestlers Reunion. “I am deeply saddened to announce the death of the legend that was Mick McManus, who passed away at 1am this morning. Mick never recovered from the loss of his beloved wife Barbara, and lost the will to live, despite the loving care of the nurses at the celebrity home for retired actors, Brishing House, where he lived out his final days. Even the arrival of his old friend Lord Richard Attenborough recently, failed to lift his spirits, refusing all food and drink until he quietly slipped into a coma three days ago. Mick McManus was without doubt, through his own efforts, the greatest wrestling name that the UK has ever seen or will see again. Even 25 years after his retirement, he retained his aura of stardom until the end. Funeral details will be posted shortly, and full obituaries will follow on the main wrestling sites.” Reports of his age varied. Mr Rimmer said he

was 93. Other reports said he was 85, having been born on January 11, 1928. He grew up in New Cross and south east London and was also known as ‘The Dulwich Destroyer’. He started to wrestle in 1947 and in the sport’s heyday in the 1960s, became notorious for pushing the rules to the limit. He became famous for his trademark black trunks and cropped black hair and for his catchphrase “Not the ears, not the ears”. He won the European Middleweight Championship in 1968 defeating Vic Faulkner, but lost it before winning it back in 1971. He then held the title twice more in the next seven years. He also held the British Middleweight and Welterweight titles. It was his televised bouts with Jackie Pallo, which were seen by millions, that he was best known. Pallo later revealed in his tell-all autobiography that the fights were completely choreographed. His fame was such that he was said to have been an influence on the work of British pop artist Peter Blake. After retiring, he settled into a quiet life as a public relations officer for an American telecommunications company.

Bamboo Towels Antiquities Tenerife

TheY are brand new to Tenerife; in fact, they are brand new to anywhere! You may not have heard of Bamboo towels before, but they are here and they are fabulous. Take an opportunity to discover the benefits of having bamboo bath towels. Picture yourself getting out of the bath or shower and wrapping yourself in pure heaven, in possibly the softest bath towel ever. Bamboo towels allow you to dry yourself off quickly due to their premium absorbent properties while also giving you the luxurious feeling of the softest fabric you have ever felt against your body. Pure cotton can often feel a bit rough to the touch; not only will you find that the towels are exceptionally soft and absorbent, but you will also find that they are durable for everyday use. They are also perfect for people who want to maintain a hygienic environment, because they are naturally odour resistant due to the fibres fast-drying characteristics. So say goodbye to that disgusting mildew smell you get from other towels from time to time, and bathe in serenity. Bamboo fabric is created from the bamboo pulp and is 100% biodegradable. It is also anti-bacterial and hypo-allergenic;

bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hypersensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.

But he confessed to feeling “totally exhausted”, but added: “This is the world’s best feeling.” The climber and his son Gota called their support team from the summit to report the news. They reached the peak at 9:05 am local time. The climbers planned to stick around the summit for about half an hour, take photos and then

start to descend. Mr Miura had already conquered the 8,850-metre (29,035-foot) peak when he was 70 and again when he was 75. Before him, the oldest person to reach the top of the world’s highest mountain was Nepal’s Min Bahadur Sherchan, who accomplished the feat at the ripe old age of 76

in 2008. Mr Sherchan, now aged 81, is preparing his own attempt on the summit next week, meaning Mr Miura’s record may soon be broken. On his expedition’s website, Mr Miura explained his attempt to scale Everest at such an advanced age: “It is to challenge my own ultimate limit. It is to honour the great Mother Nature,” he said.

Still Got It - Rod Makes Number 1

68-year-old Rod Stewart says he is “over the moon” after his new album, Time, went straight to number one. The star admitted he was “very proud” to be back at the top of the charts with his first collection of self-written songs in 20 years.

His last number one in the UK was in 1983 with the single Baby Jane, and the first time Stewart - known for hits like Maggie May and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy? - topped the album charts was in 1971 with Every Picture Tells A Story. He says the secret of the new record’s success was that it drew on his long experience of life: “I’ve lived a wonderful life and when I was putting the book together it inspired many of the songs,” he said. “If there’s anything that God gave, and some people may disagree, he gave me a tremendous

vehicle in my voice. It’s just very unique, so I was just lucky to be given this voice.” Time features 12 new songs, 11 of which he wrote himself, and is also produced by the avid Celtic and Manchester United fan. Twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has sold an estimated 150 million records worldwide since his music career started in the early 1960s. He was made CBE in 2007, released a bestselling autobiography last year and will launch a global tour next month. Asked what keeps him going after achieving so much, he said: “The music business and my children - I’ve got lots of kids, I still play football and I don’t smoke which is a very important thing.” However, Stewart was not the only 70s star to make a top 10 comeback this week. Abba singer Agnetha Faltskog came in at number six with her album A, her highest-charting solo record in the UK.

ric Morecambe and Ernie Wise have been immortalised at the television studios where some of their most popular shows were filmed. The Comedy double act feature on a new plaque at Teddington Studios, which it is hoped will

serve as a reminder of their 40-year careers.

Morecambe’s widow Joan, who unveiled the plaque with daughter Gail, said the comedians have enduring appeal: “The shows still come across as being funny,” she said. “They’re still entertaining, even for new audiences and people who weren’t around in the days of Eric and Ernie. People are very nostalgic about their shows; they hone

into long-term memories because they worked in television for years and years.” Gail Morecambe added: “It was family viewing, so the generation of children who are watching now are doing so because parents are very comfortable watching this type of comedy with their children, parents and grandparents.” Morecambe and Wise worked together from 1941

until Morecambe’s death in 1984. A solo plaque marking Morecambe’s achievements was placed in Teddington in 1995 but he will now be

A new study has found that breastfed babies under the age of three months who sleep in their parents’ beds face a five-fold increased risk of cot death. Researchers estimate nearly half of cot death cases could be prevented if parents did not bring children into their beds for sleeping. Presently, parents are told they should not share their bed only if they have been drinking alcohol, taking drugs or if they smoke. It is estimated that around 120 babies’ lives could be saved in the UK every year. A team of researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, examined data from five studies on cot death, also known as sudden infant death syndrome. They discovered that the risk of cot death among breastfed babies under three months increased with bed sharing, even when the parents did not smoke and the mother had not consumed alcohol or drugs. The research, published in the BMJ Open, found that 22% of the cot death cases occurred when babies were sharing a bed with their parents. It is estimated that 88% of such cot death cases would not have

Wise’s friends. They included the broadcaster Angela Rippon, who famously performed a dance routine with the duo during one of their Christmas specials.

happened if bed sharing had been avoided. The risk associated with bed sharing decreases as babies get older but if either parent was a smoker or the mother had drunk alcohol or used illegal drugs at any time since the child was born, the risk was greatly increased. Professor Bob Carpenter, lead author of the study, said: “If parents were made aware of the risks of sleeping with their baby, and room sharing was instead promoted in the same way that the ‘Back to Sleep’ campaign was promoted 20 years ago to advise parents to place their newborn infants to sleep on their backs, we could achieve a substantial reduction in cot death rates in the UK.” Francine Bates, of The Lullaby Trust, a charity which promotes safe sleeping in babies, said: “Our core message remains that the safest place for a baby to sleep for the first six months is in a crib or cot in the same room as a parent or carer.” In light of the new study, officials at the Department of Health have asked the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence to “urgently” review guidance on bed sharing.

eNGLAND’S new football kit has been revealed and was instantly compared to West Germany’s outfit in the 1960s and 70s by some fans. New sponsors Nike have opted for a simple design, with a rounded collar and navy badge. But fans have taken to social media sites to vent their displeasure at the kit’s likeness to england’s great rivals.

One user wrote: “New England kit? looks more like a German kit!” Another posted: “Very German! We are white and red!” But former England striker Gary Lineker joked: “Smart move by @FA and @nikefootball to go slightly German with the strip. If you can’t beat ‘em.......” The first look of the shirt was tweeted by England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who let one lucky pupil at his old school model it. It will get its first outing at Wembley when England plays the Republic of Ireland on May 29.

pistorius: “no More Competitions For 1 Year”

oSCAR Pistorius’ agent has confirmed that he will not compete again this year as he waits for his trial for murder. The double-amputee, who claims he mistook his girlfriend for an intruder when he shot her, has remained out of public view amid intense international interest in his case.

The 26-year-old is on bail following the February 14 shooting, but is allowed to compete before his court case is heard. But the six-time Paralympic champion’s coach Ampie Louw said Pistorius has turned down invitations to take part in major international athletic events: “We have decided as a team we are not talking (about) any training or athletics,” he said, adding: “We have postponed (races) for the whole year.” He said Pistorius was not

psychologically ready to take part in any events: “He is nowhere close to being in a position to train. He just does fitness exercises in the morning with his family.” It means the South African will not compete in the IPC World Championships in Lyon in July. He had not been invited to compete in the London Anniversary Games that same month. Pistorius is next due in court on June 4 and a trial is expected to take place before the end of this year.

AJoR Tim Peake, a former military helicopter pilot is set to become the first uK astronaut to visit the international Space Station (iSS). he will live and work on the space station for six months, carry out a science programme and take part in a european education initiative before and during his mission. he is one of six astronauts selected from over 8,000 applicants. The flight is expected to take place in November 2015.

To qualify, Major Peake, 41, underwent 14 months of rigorous training, including survival courses and exercises under water and underground. The former British Army Air Corps helicopter pilot, who graduated as an astronaut just three years ago, will be the first UK astronaut in space for more than 20 years. Speaking after his selection, Major Peake said: “I applied to become an astronaut with the European Space Agency because I believe for me it’s a unique opportunity in my life to become part of a team that can have such a positive impact on society. I believe humankind faces some enormous challenges this century, and the space arena is going to be fundamental in overcoming some of those challenges.” It is hoped Major Peake, who tweets with the handle @astro--timpeake, could equal the popularity of David Bowie fan,

The others either took American citizenship or their missions were privately funded. But when his Soyuz rocket blasts off from Kazakhstan he will be focused more on where he is going than where he has come from.

The basic watch was originally made by Breitling in 1962, and then adapted by the James Bond art department, and was the only one produced for the movie. It is thought that it had been passed on by someone who worked at Pinewood Studios, where much of the movie was made. The auction house, which will offer the watch at its South Kensington saleroom in a Pop Culture sale on June 26, had little further detail about the car boot sale. “This is a great opportunity for collectors to acquire a unique piece of James Bond memorabilia.” Christie’s said.

Harrison can be seen rehearsing with the guitar on I Am The Walrus during the Magical Mystery Tour of September 1967. Lennon also played it in the promotional video for Hello, Goodbye, but it did not make it

in the final cut. He gave the guitar to Alex Mardas, a friend of the band, with a plaque on the back reading: “To Magic Alex/ Alexi thank you/ for been [sic] a friend/ 2-5-1967 John.” It was built by Mike Bennett with electronics by Dick Den-

ney of Vox guitars. The instrument was briefly on public display in London earlier this month before its auction in New York. It raised $100,000 (£66,000) more than its pre-auction estimate.

www.tenerife-weekly.com Australian politician Shane Rattenbury, was been attacked by a kangaroo as he went for a morning jog. He was out running in a suburb of the capital Canberra when he suddenly came up against an eastern grey kangaroo grazing on a front lawn.

“We both got a nasty fright, and of course when kangaroos are startled, they lash out,” the 41-year-old said. “As the kangaroo sought to escape, it landed on me, and its claws dug into my leg.” Mr Rattenbury tweeted his encounter along with a picture of his bloodied legs, saying: “Mugged by a kangaroo! And this was in the suburbs, had not even got to the nature park!” The politician said the 1.4 metre (4ft 7ins) tall kangaroo knocked him to the pavement, the claws of its powerful hind legs drawing blood with two scratches to his left leg. His right leg was also bruised. Moments later, a passerby noticed Mr Rattenbury was injured and drove him home. His mother heard about the incident on a radio news bulletin and took him to a clinic, where a nurse cleaned his wounds and gave him a tetanus shot: “The nurse who treated me had treated someone before who had been scratched by a kangaroo and ended up with a very bad infection,” Mr Rattenbury said. “So she was quite keen to give it a good clean-out.” Mr Rattenbury limped into the Australian Capital Territory state parliament a few minutes before session began, less than three hours after his painful brush with

Brazil Beefs Up Security For World Cup

The Brazilian Government has bought a fleet of iRobot 510 Packbots usually used to neutralise roadside bombs and to inspect buildings and people for traces of explosives, to toughen up security for next year’s World Cup. The £4.74m order will allow police to deal with any threats from a distance. It is the same robot that examined the car allegedly hijacked by the Boston Marathon bombings suspects. Able to climb stairs and submersible in a metre of water, the robot is remote-controlled and features multiple high-resolution cameras. The World Cup starts in June 2014 and the Brazilian authorities are determined to have a solid show of security to set a precedent for the Olympics, to be held two years later. Cities such as Rio de Janeiro have a long history of violent drug gangs operating in the city’s shanty towns.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are now being spent on extra equipment, with police also set to wear face-scanning glasses - high-tech specs that can scan 400 faces a second at a distance of 45 metres, ideal for spotting potential hooligans at a football matches. They can analyse 46,000 points on a person’s face and compare them against a criminal database. Brazil’s next major security challenge before the World Cup is the visit of Pope Francis. He is visiting the country in July for World Youth Day - his first foreign trip as Pontiff.

his: “I can assure people that the kangaroo is fine,” he said. “It was last seen hopping off into the distance quite comfortably.”

Kangaroos are among Australia’s most loved native species. A kangaroo and an emu feature on the nation’s coat of arms. But kan-

garoos are so numerous around Canberra that the ACT government maintains a controversial culling program to contain them. Mr Rattenbury, who is a member of the environmentally focused Greens party, said he accepts the scientific evidence that kangaroo numbers have to be controlled around Canberra. His close encounter did not change that: “Without a predator, kangaroos have increased their abundance and have a detrimental impact on the rest of the ecosystem,” he said. “The Greens have not opposed that cull.” He added: “I really enjoy seeing kangaroos and we’re very lucky in Canberra to have them as part of our neighbourhoods, but I usually prefer to keep them at a bit more of a distance than this.” Kangaroos rarely harm people, although in 2009 one jumped through a bedroom window of a Canberra home late at night and terrorised a family before a householder wrestled it out the front door. Wildlife veterinarian Karen Vickers said more kangaroos were likely to venture deeper into Canberra suburbs in search of watered lawns to feed in the drier months ahead and that people should be wary: “It sounds like they startled each other and Shane came off worse,” she told Australian Broadcasting Corp radio. “They’re really not out to get us.” The attack clearly did not cause Mr Rattenbury to lose his sense of humour. He added later on twitter: “I believe the roo is fine - escaped the scene quickly, but did fail to get my watch or wallet for those who were wondering ...”

Justin Bieber’s Baby has been named as the highestcertified single in music history, beating Sir Elton John’s tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales.

The teenage pop star’s hit climbed above the double-sided Candle In The Wind/Something About The Way You Look Tonight after the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) changed the way it measures gold and platinum success. Internet streaming of songs is now included, with 100 streams being treated as equivalent to one download, meaning Baby has been certified as 12-times platinum. The track sold 3.9 million copies in America, and been viewed more than 858 million times on music video website Vevo. Sir Elton’s 1997 hit sold more than 33 million copies worldwide but remains 11-times platinum because there is no streaming data. Chairman and CEO of the RIAA, Cary Sherman, said: “Including music streaming in gold and platinum awards marks the continued evolution of the industry’s premier programme for recognising artistic achievement, and it reflects the wide spectrum of ways consumers enjoy music from their favourite bands.” Streaming on audio services Spotify,

Muve Music, Rhapsody, Xbox Music, Slacker and MOG are also counted in addition to the video streaming services YouTube and Vevo. Despite his latest accolade, BIeber was booed on stage at the Billboard Music Awards, where he won in two categories. The Beauty And The Beat singer was accepting the milestone award when the crowd erupted in boos. Looking confused, he said: “I’m an artist and I should be taken seriously, and all this other b******* should not be spoken

of.” It was unclear what Bieber was actually referring to in his acceptance speech, but he has had a number of bad public relations moments of late, he lost his temper with the paparazzi in London and arrived late for a series of gigs as well as abandoning his pet monkey at an airport. Bieber beat a number of other artists, including Bruno Mars and Taylor Swift, for the award. He also took home top male artist.

Hi-de-Hi star dies

STAR of the 80s BBC sitcom, hi-de-hi! Paul Shane has died at the age of 72 following a short illness. he was surrounded by friends and family in a hospice in his home town of Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

Shane played holiday camp host Ted Bovis in Hi-de-Hi!, but also starred in You Rang M’Lord? and Oh, Dr Beeching! His role in the fictional Maplin’s holiday camp saw him regularly trying to scam holidaymakers out of money. He starred alongside Su Pollard, who played chalet maid

Peggy Ollerenshaw, and Ruth Madoc, chief yellow coat Gladys Pugh. Set in 1959, the show was inspired by the experiences of co-creator Jimmy Perry, who worked in Butlins after the war. It ran for eight series between 1980 and 1988 and also launched Hi-de-Hi! as a catchphrase. Shane’s agent for 15 years, Linda Kremer, said: “Paul Shane was a consummate professional, a true gentleman, a good friend, and a joy to work with. He didn’t suffer fools, always maintained his sense of humour, never stinted on the time he gave to his fans. He lightened my life and

I’ll miss him enormously.” Later in his career he appeared in Emmerdale as Solomon Dingle, as well as having parts in Holby City, Doctors, Coronation Street and A Touch Of Frost. The well-loved actor, who was a miner before he started acting, is survived by three daughters and six grandchildren. His wife Dory died in 2001. Tributes to the actor have been appearing on Twitter, with comedian Ricky Gervais calling him an “old school Britcom hero”. Actress Lisa Riley tweeted: “RIP Paul Shane I adored you in Hi-Di-Hi great comedy actor lost!!”

patient Info To “Go Digital”

ViTAL patient information including notes and prescriptions are to “go digital” as part of a £260m move to cut down the number of paper blunders and make the NhS “safer”. hospitals will be able to use the cash to develop electronic prescription and patient systems, enabling medical staff from different departments to access patient information quickly and easily.

It comes after Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt revealed that 11 people died in the NHS in England last year after being given the wrong medication: “This fund will allow doctors and nurses to make the NHS safer by harnessing the very latest technology. In many places, right now, a paramedic picking up a frail elderly woman who has had a fall will not always know she has dementia, because he or

she cannot access her notes or a doctor is prescribing the wrong drugs because they don’t know what drugs their patient is already on. If we are to improve patient safety then we must allow the NHS to have access to the best tools available and this fund will help them achieve that.” Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, medical director of NHS England, said: “This new fund will help patients get better and safer care by giving clinicians access to the right information when they need it most. Supporting hospitals to replace out dated paper

systems for notes and prescriptions will help relieve patients’ frustration at having to repeat their medical and medication history over and over again, often in the same hospital, because their records aren’t available. Expanding the use of electronic prescribing of medications in hospitals will help improve safety, save lives and save taxpayer’s money.” Mr Hunt has previously set out ambitions to make the NHS “paperless” within the next five years. He also wants GPs to make patient records available online by 2015.

New Life With Bionic Hands

Aimee Copeland, 25, of Snelville, Georgia, who lost her hands, left leg and right foot, has been fitted with prosthetic hands. She contracted a rare flesh eating infection called necrotising fasciitis in May 2012 after falling from a homemade zip line over a river while on holiday with friends. The line snapped and she fell and cut her left knee. Bacteria in the water entered her open wound and spread. Doctors were forced to

amputate her hands, left leg and right foot in order to save her life. The University of West Georgia graduate spent two months at the Shepherd Centre, a rehabilitation clinic in Atlanta, learning to move, eat and bathe without prosthetics. She has now received her new hands from Touch Bionics, and is now learning to use her artificial hands which are controlled by her muscle movements and arm positions. Her father, Andy Copeland, said his daughter’s new hands would help her regain her confidence - and allow her to cook again, something she used to enjoy: “She has been

27

sending us videos of things she can do,” he said. “The second day she was moving water between cups. On the third day she was cutting a cucumber. On the fourth day she was doing more typical things, like applying makeup to her face and more personal things. I just really look forward to her regaining her confidence about certain things she’s been unable to do. Really I just want to see her enjoying life the way that she should.” He added she was likely to begin looking for a prosthetic leg with a computer-controlled knee joint to allow for more natural movement than a mechanical one.

Driver Survives 20m Fall From Truck

George Michael In Car Crash

A truck driver is thought to have swerved to avoid a Melbourne motorway collision before his lorry twisted and flipped, throwing him into a 20-metre fall onto another road below. The man is in a critical condition following the crash, which left his truck dangling precariously from the bridge on a busy stretch of the city’s road network.

George Michael has been injured in a rush-hour car crash on the M1 motorway in which he suffered cuts and bruises. Ambulance crews, as well as the air ambulance, were called to the incident near the junction for the M25.

Melbourne Fire Brigade Assistant Chief Officer Adam Dalrymple said it appeared the truck driver had swerved to avoid a car that had suddenly veered in front of him: “From all reports the car veered across and the truck took some evasive action and that’s how the incident began. It’s a pretty intense, horrific sort of incident.” The driver of the truck, believed to be in his 30s, was thrown from the cab, falling onto the street running below Bolte Bridge. He was found by a nearby factory worker, who comforted him until an ambulance arrived. “I just made sure he was conscious and kept him calm until paramedics were able to take over, he kept saying he was going to die.” The driver had suffered serious head

and pelvic injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said. He remains in a critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. A witness stated: “There were no signs of obvious trauma. No blood or anything like that. No bones protruding. I saw the truck as well, hanging upside down, and couldn’t believe he was still conscious.” The other driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, suffered minor injuries and is in a stable condition in hospital. Cranes were brought in to secure and move the dangling truck. The crash also cracked a brick wall on a building beneath the bridge. Fire crews are investigating the building to make sure the damage does not cause it to collapse.

A spokesman for the 49-year-old entertainer said: “George Michael was a passenger in a vehicle involved in a traffic accident, no third party was involved. He is being treated for superficial cuts and bruises but is fine. We have no further comment at this time.” Another man was flown by air ambulance to a specialist trauma centre in London. Ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “A man who we believe to be in his 40s sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to hospital for further care.”

In 2010 Michael - real name Georgios Panayiotou - was given an eight-week jail sentence for crashing his Range Rover while under the influence of cannabis. Following his release he told reporters that he wanted to “start again”. He was banned from driving for five years, and ordered to pay a £1,250 fine.

okLAHoMA deCIM very sad day for the state of Oklahoma - a very hard day and very tragic day. Our prayers and our thoughts are with all the Oklahoma families that have been hit hard by this terrible storm. We are doing every single thing that we can to assist those that are in need right now.” The governor said she had deployed 80 Oklahoma National Guard members to help with the recovery effort and assist search and rescue teams who she said were “looking under every single piece of debris” to find anyone that might be injured or lost. She had already declared a state of emergency for 16 Oklahoma counties due to the tornado threat on Sunday, and added five more on Monday after the storms hit the state capital. President Barack Obama pledged to provide federal help, saying the people of Moore “will need our continued love and attention”. Residents of Moore had been given just sixteen minutes to find shelter before the broad, dark funnel cloud moved through the area for around 35 minutes before dissipating. News helicopter showed footage of huge swathes of buildings and homes completely levelled, with nothing but wreckage left. Some homes were taken down to their concrete slabs, vehicles crumpled and overturned in piles of debris on the motorway, and buildings that

After nearly 24 hours of searching, Moore’s fire chief, Gary Bird, said he was confident there were no more bodies or survivors in the rubble, and rescue workers neared the end of their search. But remaining efforts were

The tornado hit Moore, on Monday, wreaking devastation upon the once thriving community of 56,000 people. The National Weather Service said the tornado, which was on the ground for 40 minutes, was a top-of-the-scale EF5 twister with winds of at least 200mph (320kph). In some points the tornado scoured the land down to the soil, leaving large patches of red earth. Some tree trunks were still standing, but the winds ripped away their leaves, limbs and bark.

hampered by heavy rain. So far, every damaged home in Moore has been searched at least once, Mr Bird said. His goal was to conduct three searches of each building just to be certain there were no more bodies or survivors. The tornado claimed the lives of seven children from Plaza Towers Elementary School, they drowned in a pool of water as they sheltered from the monster tornado, where the storm ripped off the roof, knocked down walls and destroyed the playground. Emergency crews had trouble navigating devastated neighbourhoods because there were no street signs left. Some rescuers used smartphones or GPS devices to guide them through areas with no recognisable landmarks. Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin lamented the loss of life but also she celebrated the town’s resilience: “We will rebuild, and we will regain our strength,” she said. Ms Fallin told a news conference “hearts are broken” for the parents looking for their children: “This is a

cimated By Twister had become unrecognisable jumbles of rubble. Footage of the storm showed the monster twister slowly moving through the area and the flashes of power lines blowing. Utility workers rushed to shut off electricity and gas to the area to prevent further danger from live power lines or natural gas leaks. In Tulsa - 100 miles away - residents reported the debris from the Moore tornado raining down on their neighbourhoods. The huge tornado was the most recent in a series of twisters that have ravaged towns in the midwest US in recent days, with a series of violent storms that stretched from the Canadian border down into Texas. The stretch of the country is known as “tornado alley” and residents are trained in how to take shelter. Most towns and cities are equipped with storm sirens that can warn of a coming tornado half an hour before it hits. The same suburb was hit hard by a tornado in 1999, when the storm produced the highest winds ever recorded near the Earth’s surface - of up to 302mph. The Queen said she was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and devastation caused by the tornado and sent her “deepest sympathies” to all those affected.

Teachers

Teachers have emerged as heroes as their stories were told by their pupils. One teacher shielded schoolchildren from falling debris by laying on top of the youngsters, while another took an eight-yearold under her arms and held him down until the tornado passed. Two schools were directly hit by the tornado, Plaza Towers Elementary School - where at least seven children were killed after reportedly drowning - and Briarwood Elementary, where all the children appear to have survived. After the tornado alarm went off, students at Plaza Towers scrambled into the halls. But the halls did not appear safe enough. A Plaza Tower teacher had tears in her eyes and could barely speak as she recounted

the scene from her hospital bed: “We told them to get down, there weren’t any lights on and already they were all scared. I had my arms over the ones next to me and I looked up at the door and I put my head down and it just hit. I was telling them to keep calm, and that they would come. (One student) just kept telling me that he couldn’t breathe and that he didn’t want to die.” Rhonda Crosswhite, a sixth-grade teacher, shielded three children with her own body, shouting over the roaring twister that everything would be OK as debris knocked her back: “It just started coming down so I just laid on top of some of them. One of my little boys kept saying ‘I love you! I love you! Please don’t die with me’,” the 44-year-old added.

Chopard Theft gun scare At Cannes

JeWeLLeRY worth more than £660,000 was stolen from a hotel before it could be given to stars to wear at the Cannes Film Festival. The jewels, which were intended for loan to actors while walking the red carpet, were all made by Swiss luxury jeweller Chopard. Thieves broke into the room of a Chopard employee at the Novotel hotel in the centre of Cannes before opening a safe and making off with the jewels. Police have confirmed the Palme D’Or trophy, which is presented to the director of the festival’s best film, is safe. Chopard has been an official sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival for 16 years. Last year the jeweller’s ambassadors at the festival included Eva Herzigova, Jessica Chastain, Reese Witherspoon and Marion Cotillard. The opening ceremony this year featured Julianne Moore, Cindy Crawford and Cara Delevingne all wearing Chopard jewellery.. After the Oscars, the Cannes Film Festival is the industry’s most prestigious event. It was opened this year with a red-carpet

screening of Baz Luhrman’s new film The Great Gatsby, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. Other films that will compete for the Palme D’Or trophy this year include Inside Llewyn Davis, directed by the Coen

brothers, and Venus in Fur, directed by Roman Polanski. Stars due to arrive in the French resort before the festival closes on May 26th, include Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, Ryan Gosling and Alain Delon.

A MAN was arrested after firing a starting pistol at the Cannes Film Festival, sending actors Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil running for cover. Police arrested a suspect at the scene and discovered he was also carrying a dummy grenade and a knife.

The alert occurred during a live TV broadcast on the resort’s waterfront. French station Canal+ was interviewing the two actors when a man fired twice into the air. “The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him to the ground,” said witness Arthur Laiguesse. “The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand.” Television footage showed Waltz, other guests and crew scrambling from the seaside stage as a voice said “there’s someone shooting”. After the man was taken away, the show’s producers told the crowd the programme would

continue. “It really appears to be a crazy guy,” said a police source. Austrian actor Waltz who won two Best Supporting Actor Oscars for Django

Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, is part of the Cannes prize jury, along with Auteuil, and Nicole Kidman. This year American Director Steven Spielberg is the festival’s President of the Jury.

However, there’s the small detail that Nolan has just started preproduction on his next movie, Sci-Fi epic Interstellar and may not be available for quite some time, I personally hope they manage to make it happen, imagine Daniel Craig’s secret agent facing a villain as menacing and memorable as Heath Ledger’s Joker? Police were called to break up the fans, mostly in full costume as their favourite characters, when an autograph signing at a scifi convention organised by The Norwich Starwars club, became violent. The trouble began when members of a rival group The Norwich Sci-Fi club, attempted to gain entry but were refused. One member ignored the rebuttal and pushed in, hoping to obtain an autograph from actor Graham Cole, who has appeared several times in Doctor Who in various small roles. It was at this point lightsabers and sonic screwdrivers were drawn -leading to “The Force”-as in police, arriving to break them up!! “It does sound comical, people that dress up in costume are labelled as geeks and some people laugh at us, and this just makes it even more so” said the secretary for the Galactic Empi-sorry , Starwars club.

A fossil has been named Kooteninchela deppi, by David Legg, the scientist who discovered it because it’s scissor-like claws reminded him of the character Edward Scissorhands-played by Depp in the 1990 movie; “When I first saw the pair of isolated claws in the fossil records of this species, I could not help but think of Edward Scissorhands,” “Even the genus name, Kootenichela, includes the reference to this film, as ‘chela’ is Latin for claws or scissors.” “In truth, I am also a bit of a Depp fan,” he admits, “and so what better way to honour the man than to immortalize him as an ancient creature that once roamed the sea?” It’s believed many of today’s invertebrates like spiders, scorpions, millipedes and crabs are

direct descendants of this strange sea monster; “Just imagine it,” Legg says. “The prawns covered in mayonnaise in your sandwich, the spider climbing up your wall, and even the fly that has been banging into your window and annoyingly flying into your face are all descendants of Kooteninchela deppi.”

AN iVF technique which claims to triple the chances of a successful birth is being described by the scientific community as the biggest breakthrough in fertility treatment for years. it uses time-lapse imaging to look at embryos and identify those which have chromosomal abnormalities. embryos affected with this condition, known as aneuploidy, will not implant in the womb and can lead to miscarriage, or birth defects such as Down’s syndrome.

Researchers at British IVF clinic operator CARE Fertility used the technique to select “low-risk” embryos unlikely to have chromosomal abnormalities. By doing so, they believe it can increase the chances of a successful birth from the average of 25% up to around 78%. In most IVF labs, a developing embryo waiting to be transferred to a womb will be checked up to six times over a five-day period. Timelapse imaging allows more than 5,000 snapshots to be taken over the same period. Professor Simon Fishel, managing director of CARE Fertility Group, who helped to create Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, said: “In the 35 years I have been in this field this is probably the most exciting and significant development that can be of value to all patients seeking IVF.” Stuart Lavery, consultant gynaecologist and director

of IVF at Hammersmith Hospital, London, said: “Timelapse imaging of the early development of human embryos offers the exciting potential of a novel and noninvasive way of selecting the embryo with the greatest chance of implantation outside the womb.” Each year licensed clinics in Britain carry out 60,000 IVF treatments, with couples paying between £5,000 and £10,000 for each cycle. Experts are agreed that a randomised trial is needed to compare time-lapse imaging with conventional techniques. Sue Avery, director of Birmingham Women’s Fertility Centre, said: “Until the new technique is compared to current practice we cannot know whether different embryos are being chosen. The IVF community needs a prospective randomised controlled trial to prove that the new approach delivers better results before it can be recommended to pa-

tients.” The school books make human fertilisation seem straightforward: sperm meets egg and a baby grows. In fact a significant proportion of embryos never make it because they have an abnormal number of chromosomes and are expelled from the womb. That’s true for both natural conception and IVF. Currently fertility scientists try to choose the healthiest looking embryo in the lab, in the belief that it is more likely to successfully implant in the mother. But often the attempt fails, leaving the couple heartbroken and, if they are treated at a private clinic, £3,000 poorer. If the technique really does improve success rates so dramatically then it needs to be swiftly rolled out to other clinics - including those in the NHS. Patients have to pay an extra £750 for the technique. They deserve good evidence that it works.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Whine And Moan

British people love to moan. The Australians call us whinging Poms. They are probably right. Not only do we like to complain about things, but once something hasn’t quite gone our way, we like to add a few other things to the list when we make a formal complaint.

We pay no regard to the jobs that we might be putting in jeopardy because of a silly whim or a childish mood. With this in mind, here are just some of the most ridiculous complaints that holidaymakers have made over the last few years to tour operators. 1. The children’s entertainment at our resort was too good and our children didn’t want to spend any time with us. 2. Upon arrival at our hotel, I noticed that my shampoo had leaked over our clothing whilst in our suitcases. To my disgust, the hotel provided complimentary shampoo and so the whole incident was preventable. 3. I was extremely annoyed to find that so many other people also had plain black suitcases and I was unable to distinguish which case was mine at the airport. 4. We booked an excursion to a water park, but no one told us that we needed to bring swimming costumes

On my drive to work, I started noticing new road signs appearing on a regular basis. It became obvious that this was an Island wide campaign as I live in the north of Tenerife and there was uniformity about these new signs. Many of them have full sized photos of the places that they are directing us to.

and towels. 5. The beach was too sandy 6. “We found the sand was not like the sand in the brochure. Your brochure shows the sand as yellow but it was white.” 7. One guest at a hotel complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was actually eating the gravy at the time. 8. “Topless sunbathing on the beach should be banned. The holiday was ruined as my husband spent all day looking at other women.” 9. “We bought ‘Ray-Ban’ sunglasses for five Euros from a street trader, only to find out they were fake.” 10. “No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled.”

11. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the accommodation’. We’re trainee hairdressers - will we be OK staying there?” 12. “There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners now live abroad.” So, dear holidaymaker, let me just make a few points clear for you all. The beach has sand on it; the sky has clouds in it sometimes. Spanish people live here and in fact own the island. If you get gravy, put it on your meat and if you get wet, wherever it is, you will need a towel. Try to make your holiday moan free, you will certainly enjoy it more. Nothing is perfect, but Tenerife has an awful lot to offer!

Not On The Back Seat

I quite often put my shopping on the back seat of the car when I am in a rush. This is illegal in Spain and can get you a lovely fine. When I say lovely, it was 130 euros on my last count.

A friend of mine, who lives in the mainland, was telling me that a friend of his received a number of fines that totalled over 500 euros. They were all things that didn’t seem to be very important, however, the policeman must have decided to have a field day. Make sure you know your driving rules here in Spain. They aren’t drastically different that they are in the UK, but some of the fines are a lot heavier.

A Good Sign

They have cost well over 1,000,000 euros to produce and I am one of the few, it seems, that likes them. There are many who feel that the money could be put to better use, but 1 million is not very much in the great scheme of things. Some of them have been badly placed and direct people to the wrong areas, but once they are all sorted out I feel that they will make our roads look a little more upmarket, which is where Tenerife tourism seems to be going these days.

There is one sign in the north, however, that is a bit ridiculous to say the least. It is a motorway sign that says TEIDE on it and there is a fantastic photograph of Mount Teide on it. Behind this won-

derful photograph of Teide is the real thing, standing proud and tall behind it. It looks as if the photograph was actually taken in the spot that it has been placed. Was that really necessary?

Eurovision

What a load of old claptrap the Eurovision song contest was this year. It has got worse and worse over the last decade and it makes me wonder why we bother to cofinance it anymore.

I get the impression that we don’t take it seriously as a competition like we did back in the seventies and eighties. It seems that the powers that be keep digging up past pop masters in an attempt to bribe the audiences into thinking that dreary and banal dirges actually sound wonderful Last year, we were treated to a depressing effort by Englbert Humperdinck. This year’s three minutes of dross was delivered by Bonnie Tyler, who used to have hits when my godson was an egg. Next year’s singer has already been announced. Vera Lynn is going to take the contest to new depths. I despair!

E-Cigarettes – Quit Or Encourage A Habit?

The role of the electronic cigarette is a controversial one, is it a way to stop smoking, or an encouragement to start? Already some schools, social venues and public bodies have decided to treat them as they would normal cigarettes and ban them.

Those who support their use say they provide an alternative way to ingest nicotine without the harm caused by smoking, and say millions of lives could be saved if smokers chose that alternative. Surveys suggest the use of electronic cigarettes by young people is limited to those who already smoke them. But schools like Burton Borough School in Newport, Shropshire, are taking no chances: “Any product that could potentially glamorise smoking is not welcome here,” says Head Teacher David Hills. “As far as I’m aware, the BMA want to ban them like they have with cigarettes.” The industry says there are many misconceptions regarding the product. Katherine Devlin, President of the Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association (ECITA), said it was wrong to think that the products are not regulated. She said the industry would welcome more legislation in some areas, especially regarding age: “We do want to see a mandate to restrict the age for sales of these products to mirror those for tobacco products,” she said. “These products are for adult smoking consumers, they’re not for children.” ECITA members do not claim their products are an aid to quitting smoking. If they did then e-cigarettes would have to be classified as medicine, and so be subject to much stricter legislation and regulation.

But many companies, particularly those online, do break the rules, and claim that ecigarettes are a way to quit. Figures provided by the anti-smoking lobby ASH show that among current smokers, the use of e-cigarettes has risen from 3% in 2010 to 11% in 2013. Almost half the ex-smokers surveyed (48%) said they had used e-cigarettes to help give up smoking and almost a third (32%) used them to prevent reverting to tobacco use. But their use amongst children was said to be extremely rare, with only 1% of young people who do not smoke saying they had tried

e-cigarettes once or twice, with none saying they would continue to use them. Some public bodies have also banned their use, like NHS Fife. It initially introduced the ban because of the fire risk presented by the delivery systems, which heat up the liquid they contain to create the “smoke” which the user inhales. Director of public health, Dr Edward Coyle, said he would like to know more about the long-term health risks of the product itself: “We review policies here very regularly, and if it was shown that e-cigarettes could be effective as a smoking cessation device, we could consider overturning the ban,” he said.

ASH believes that e-cigarettes can provide a less harmful alternative for smokers who want to cut down or quit smoking but that the products need to be regulated and their marketing controlled. ASH chief executive Deborah Arnott said: “E-cigarettes offer a potentially safer option for smokers wishing to reduce their risk of ill-health from tobacco use. However, these products need to be regulated to ensure that they are reliable, effective and not targeted at children. E-cigarettes should be brought under the control of medicines regulation to ensure that they are safe to use and marketed appropriately.”

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

Blooming Vines And Exotic Creepers

O

n Tenerife you can’t help but notice the clouds of floral colour that cover walls and fences. Climbing plants and tropical vines that bloom add their exotic charm to the gardens and parks of the island and many are very easy to grow.

Passion Fruit Uses Around The World • Passion Fruit is a very healthy fruit to eat and contains Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron and Potassium, as well as dietary fibre. • In Australia and New Zealand it is sold fresh and canned. Passion Fruit sauce and fresh pulp is added to desserts and fruit salads. • Brazilians use the seeds to decorate cakes and Passion Fruit mousse is a popular dessert. • In Indonesia Passion Fruit syrup is sold in many supermarkets. Water is added to dilute the syrup. • A wine is made from Passion Fruit in Israel. • In Mexico people eat Passion Fruit raw with chilli powder and lime. • In Peru they make cheesecakes with the juice of the fruit as an ingredient. • In Portugal, Madeira and the Azores, Passion Fruit forms the base for various liqueurs and mousses. • In South Africa yogurts are flavoured with Passion Fruit and so are soft drinks. • The Vietnamese blend Passion Fruit with honey and ice to make smoothies.

Passion-flower enjoys a sunny location and is often used to cover walls, form hedges or just to ramble its way over patches of ground. Leadwort comes from South Africa where in traditional folklore it is believed to have magical properties. Another beautiful blue-flowered vine you will see on the island is the Blue Skyflower (Thunbergia grandiflora). Its name tells you the shade its bell-shaped blooms are and they are carried in clusters among its evergreen foliage. There is a magnificent one in the Plaza del Charco square in Puerto de la Cruz.

Bougainvillea flowers First and foremost is the Bougainvillea (Bougainvillea spectabilis) which comes in a range of vivid colours and flowers all year round. There are many varieties of this drought resistant climbing plant. There are purple Bougainvilleas and others that are salmon pink and an almost glowing shade of orange. The flowers are actually pretty insignificant and what look like the petals are technically known as bracts but I am sure you won’t worry about that when dazzled in awe by the displays

Flame Vine

Leadwort (Plumbago) these plants create! The Flame Vine (Pyrostegia venusta) is another fast-growing climber that likes a sunny location and flowers all year. It has clusters of bright red-orange tubular flowers which give the plant its fiery name. The Gold Cup (Solandra maxima) is aptly named and has huge yellow funnel-shaped flowers and large evergreen leaves. It rapidly covers walls and pergolas and can be rooted from cuttings. Leadwort (Plumbago auriculata) is not as colourful as the climbing plants already covered but nevertheless makes an eye-catching display with its numerous pale blue flowers that are carried in short spikes. It is drought resistant and

Blue Skyflower Podreana brycei

Golden Cup

Similar in form when it comes to flowers and habits but unrelated botanically is the climbing evergreen shrub known as Port John’s Creeper (Podranea brycei). It has bunches of trumpet-shaped purplish-pink flowers and will grow rapidly to cover walls or fences. It comes originally from Zimbabwe but does really well here on Tenerife. It is closely related to the Pink Trumpet Vine (P. ricasoliana) and this colourful climber is often grown on the island too. There are several types of Passion Flower that can be seen climbing their way over whatever they encounter. The Passion Fruit (Passi-

flora edulis) is the most commonly seen, and like the “edulis” part of its Latin name suggests, it has edible berries, which are large, oval in shape and .a dark-purple colour when ripe. They have a wonderful tasting juice but far too many seeds for my liking. It gets its name from the idea that the plant represents the Passion of Christ, and that its 10 white petals symbolise his loyal disciples but exclude Peter who denied him and Judas Iscariot his betrayer. The Banana Passion Flower (P. mollissima) is less often seen and has pinkish petals and long fruit that are yellow and look like the one it is named after. They are edible too and are full of a delicious juice. The Brazilian Dutchman’s Pipe (Aristolochia gigantea) has huge but foul-smelling flowers that are really spectacular and unlike anything else you will come across. They are yellowish blotched with purple and part of them is a long tube, hence the pipe similarity. Like all the other vines and climbers it is used for covering garden walls and fences. The Messina Creeper (Ipomoea cairica) or Mile-a-minute Vine is known for its very fast growth, though its alternative name is a bit of an exaggeration. It is in the Morning Glory genus and is also known as the Cairo Morning Glory. The flower is an attractive pale lilac-purple funnel, in a shape so typical of the Convolvulus family and the leaves are palmate and are very ornamental when the plant is not in bloom. Another very commonly seen creeping plant in this genus is the Blue Dawn Flower (I. acuminata). It is often seen growing wild in many places around Tenerife, especially in the north. It has actually has purplish-pink flowers not blue. The Blue Dawn Flower is a perennial plant and quickly covers whatever it is growing over and will make a carpet of vegetation over the ground too. Some gardeners and farmers don’t like it because it can be invasive and difficult to get rid of. This is just a brief introduction to the vines and creepers grown on Tenerife but if you have something you want to hide in your garden or terrace what better way to do so is there than to cover it with a climbing plant?

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

SCoTLAND Yard has announced that they identified a number of suspects in the case of missing Madeleine McCann. officers investigating the case as part of a review, launched in 2011 in an attempt to find out what happened to the toddler who vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve, have drawn up a list of “people of interest” they wish to speak to in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine in May 2007.

The Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell said: “The purpose of the review was to look at the case with fresh eyes and there is

always real benefit in doing so. The review has further identified both investigative and forensic opportunities to support the Portuguese. There are more than a handful of people of interest which could be explored further if only to be eliminated. The key things are to investigate the case and our work is happening to support the Portuguese.” A spokesman for the McCann family, Clarence Mitchell, said: “Kate and Gerry continue to be encouraged by Operation Grange and are very pleased by the work the police are doing. Beyond that they won’t be commenting on any operational matters.” The Portuguese authorities’ handling of the original investigation was widely criticised. The police named Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry, as suspects but they were cleared in July 2008 when the attorney general ruled there was nothing to

link them to their daughter’s disappearance. Madeleine disappeared from the bedroom of the ground floor apartment that she was sharing with her brother and sister, twins Sean and Amelie, on the evening of May 3, 2007, just days before her fourth birthday. Her parents had been enjoying a holiday meal with friends at a tapas restaurant just 130 yards away. Mr and Mrs McCann, who have campaigned endlessly to find out what happened to their daughter, recently quietly celebrated her 10th birthday. Mrs McCann, a GP, said: “We still celebrate her and her being part of our lives. I go into Madeleine’s room and I don’t even have to talk - I can just think. It’s as it was really and I’m not ready to change it. We always include Madeleine in everything. She is in my head and my heart every minute of every day.”

Lemon Curd Fun! Anyone that came along to VIVO last Saturday would have helped us celebrate Bitter and Twisted’s 10th anniversary. I had the pleasure of making the birthday cake for the special evening and I decided to make a lemon drizzle cake - with a twist of course! A few people asked for the recipe so here it is. I recommend you try this wonderful easy lemon curd recipe first so you have it for the cake.

Lemon Curd Drizzle Cake

Ingredients: 175g plain flour 175g margarine 175g sugar 1 heaped teaspoon baking powder 3 large eggs 1 tsp lemon juice and zest of a lemon 1 tbsp homemade lemon curd Method: Preheat the oven to 160°C Mix everything all in one go in a large mixing bowl until light and creamy. Next split the mixture between two square baking tins lined with great proof paper.

Bake in the oven on a middle shelf for about 25 minutes, or until the cake is firm. I always tend to turn the oven down and be really patient baking it so that the sponge cooks slowly and evenly throughout. Next, when cooled, spread lemon curd between the two layers and then sandwich them together. Take a good couple of dessert spoons of icing sugar and mix it into a thick paste with some lemon juice. Spread evenly on top and sprinkle some extra grated lemon zest on top for that extra tangy taste.

Bacon Salad Bowls

Here’s something different for you to impress your friends and family with. Take a large round cake tin or a muffin tray. Line the outside of it with foil and then layer and overlap some streaky bacon over the moulds. Bake in a hot oven upside down until the bacon is crispy and lightly smoking. Allow to cool and then remove the bacon cases from their moulds. Fill it with your favourite salad or why not lettuce and tomato for that different B.L.T.

Ingredients: 180ml fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest 175g sugar 3 eggs 125g unsalted butter, cubed Method: In a 2 litre saucepan, combine lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, eggs and butter. Cook over medium-low heat until thick enough to hold marks from whisk and first bubble appears on surface, about 6 minutes. Pour into sterilised glass jars, seal and leave to cool completely. Store in the fridge. It should keep for up to 4 weeks.

50 Years of James Bond

B

RiTAiN’S most famous secret agent has rescued the world on several occasions, but the Aston Martin owners club reckons Bond also rescued the fortunes of the iconic manufacturer.

James Bond has smashed up a few Aston Martins in his time, but vintage car owners gathered last Sunday to celebrate how the spy came to the legendary British brand’s rescue. Meeting against the stunning backdrop of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, south east London, the Aston Martin Owners Club marked the 50th anniversary of the DB5. The model was famously driven by Sir Sean Connery in Goldfinger, the third Bond movie released in 1964, forever linking Aston Martin to the world’s most famous secret agent. Around 20 versions of the DB5 were on display at the meet, including the classic silver model used in blockbuster Skyfall, the latest Bond instalment. Mark Donoghue, chairman of the club, explained how the DB5’s appearance in Goldfinger changed Aston Martin’s fortunes. The 50-year-old said: “Aston Martin has had a terribly turbulent financial history

over the years and because of the introduction of product placement of an Aston Martin in the film everyone in the world automatically recognised it as an iconic mark and something recognisible with style, charisma and James Bond. “Aston Martin’s have style, they’re not flash like a Ferrari, they are beautiful to look at, they sound fantastic and it’s the epitome of a British sports car.” Judges kitted out in white overalls inspected around 50 Aston Martins on display today, including a pristine model of the DB2, made in 1953 and considered one of the world’s first hatchbacks. Paul Spires, general sales manager for Aston Martin, explained how the company got the DB5 seen in Skyfall ready for filming in just six weeks. “The film company needed a car in a very short space of time and we were fortunate to find an owner

that loaned us the car for them to use in the film,” he said. “It is a terrific thing for Aston Martin to have the DB5 in the film again. “The chassis number of this car is actually 007 and without Bond who knows where Aston Martin would be? “The DB5 is a terrifically significant car and they are coveted by their owners - we built only just over a thousand cars between 1963 and 1965 and every customer that owns one is passionate about their car, they love them to bits. “You can’t help but want to drive the DB5 with the black tie on - everybody that has got one of these cars wants to be a little bit of a James Bond inside.” This year also marks the centenary of Aston Martin and to celebrate it, all the Bond cars will be put on display in Kensington Palace on July 21.

Land rover Collects More ‘Awards’

The Range Rover evoque and the Land Rover Discovery have continued with their winning ways in the annual ‘Diesel Car’ Car of the Year Awards.

Diesel Car Magazine’s award winning writers put every single new car through its paces, in a stringent test programme, to decide upon the very best cars in ten different segments. Land Rover continues to provide some of the best diesel options available. The popular and successful Range Rover Evoque is voted best crossover for the second year in a row and the Land Rover Discovery 4 wins best 4x4 title for the fourth year in succession. The all-

new Range Rover was voted luxury finalist in the 4x4 category. Land Rover’s UK Marketing Director, Laura Schwab said “we are delighted to receive these awards which are a testament to the unique combination of go anywhere ability, practicality and clever design that are intrinsic to Land Rover products. The Range Rover Evoque has proved to be an instant hit attracting many new customers to the brand, while the Discovery 4 has long been the choice for customers who want a vehicle for all purposes.”

New Land Rover Discovery 4

Diesel Car Magazine’s Editor, Ian Robertson said “we’re huge fans of the Evoque, a car that is equally at home

up a rugged mountain track or outside the Ritz and if the Discovery 4 is not the most all-round capable car in the world, we honestly don’t know what is.” Mr Robertston is not wrong as the Discovery 4 is most definitely an all-rounder and if you are a caravan enthusiast then the Land Rover Discovery 4 is top for towing. It was recently voted the first choice by caravan enthusiasts. The Discovery features so much intelligent technology that creates a safe and comfortable towing experience Trailer Stability Assist (Standard) automatically detects the presence of a trailer and once 37 mph is reached, the sensors monitor the behaviour of the trailer.

The Queen: A Passion For Horses Editor Recommends BBC 1 - 21:00 - 22:00

her Majesty The queen has a public face that’s instantly recognizable to billions, but away from the demands of royal duty, her private passion is for the world of horses.

This one-off special documentary charts The Queen’s enduring relationship with horses and an astonishing 65-year career as one of Britain’s leading breeders. Presented by Clare Balding - whose grandfather, father, and brother have all trained the Queen’s horses – the film gains privileged behindthe-scenes access to The Queen as she pursues her dream: to breed the ultimate racehorse.

There is an ancient connection between Royalty and horses, and monarchs have bred horses for hundreds of years, but none with the dedication of the current Queen. She is one of the most respected breeders in Britain, with an especially successful track-record of producing world-class race horses: she’s bred the winners of over 1,600 races. Over the course of one spring season – from the births of foals at Sandringham, where every royal thoroughbred is born, to the thrill of race day at Newbury – the film reveals The Queen’s expertise and close personal involvement in producing topclass racehorses, as well as her work to preserve the native pony breeds of Britain.

grand prix glamour T

he jewel in the crown of the F1 series has to be the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. A race which provides one of the greatest sporting spectacles, 22 cars scream around the tight streets of Monte Carlo. The drivers have to use all of their skill, talent and concentration in an attempt to win the race that means just that little bit more. Although he hasn’t won a race since the opening round in Australia, Kimi Raikkonen’s last three consecutive second places have marked him out as a serious championship challenger. The Lotus is still not fast enough over one lap but in past races Raikkonen has managed his tyres to perfection, taking advantage of the E21’s inherent strengths. He has scored points at the last 22 races and the only blot on his landscape as a Lotus driver is the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix where he looked like a podium contender until he had tyre problems. Monaco may prove harder racing than Bahrain and Spain, even if he can’t qualify near the front of the grid, we could still see him in the running at the top of the championship. McLaren’s lack of progress will be frustrating and Jenson Button has said he is not expecting much more in Monaco. The one upside from Spain was that the correlation concerns seem to have been addressed, which is vital for 2014 as well as 2013, but the lack of outright performance is still disappointing. News that Honda will arrive in 2015 is a major boost but will also bring its own challenges, and means McLaren is working on three very different cars for 2013, 2014 and 2015. Adrian Sutil has been unlucky at the last four races with various problems, however, in all of those races he showed impressive pace over the weekend and it’s just a matter of time before it all comes good for him. On his last two visits to Monaco he has scored points and in 2008 he made his name when his Force India was running fourth before being taken out by Kimi Raikkonen. This year’s VJM06 has been quick in qualifying so he stands a good chance of getting a decent grid position and then challenge for points in the race. News this week that Paddy Lowe is set to join Mercedes was no surprise,

but that it will happen as early as June 3 was not expected. Lowe had a McLaren contract until the end of the year and was expected to see out a full season of gardening leave before joining rivals Mercedes, but a deal has been struck to let him start work next month. It may not impact this season, but it is significant news for 2014 and beyond as Lowe can get his feet under the desk in his newly-created role as executive director (technical). Ross Brawn is still in charge as team principal, but it will be interesting to see how the relationship between the two technical heavyweights develops. News that the tyre construction and compounds will be tweaked from Canada onwards has not gone down well with Ferrari and Lotus. As two of the teams that made the tyres work to their advantage in the opening rounds it is understandable for them to be upset, but Pirelli are now saying the changes will not be as dramatic as the teams are making out. Nevertheless, with F1 so tight at the moment, any change will have an effect and it will only be after a few races that we really see how it alters the title race. Monaco sees the most important qualifying session of the year and in order to set a competitive time you need a clear lap. As ESPN’s Sam Bird points out: “Traffic doesn’t cost you tenths around Monaco, it costs you seconds.” Finding a clear part of track can be difficult, but it’s also not that easy to allow another car past on the narrow streets - especially in the tight final sector - and one radio message you’re bound to hear will be a driver complaining about being held up. If the grid penalties that were handed out in Barcelona are anything to go by, it might not be until late on Saturday that

a provisional starting grid is announced Fresh from his victory on home soil, Fernando Alonso is the bookies’ favourite at 5/2 to repeat his success in Monaco. Sebastian Vettel has odds at 11/4, while Lewis Hamilton is 11/2 to take his first Mercedes victory. Kimi Raikkonen might look tempting at 6/1 but his occasional qualifying issues could hurt him this weekend, so Nico Rosberg is a good bet at 13/2. nadal smashes Federer RoGeR Federer admitted he had no answer to Rafael Nadal after the Spaniard destroyed him at the internazionali d’italia in Rome.

Nadal, competing in his eighth final in a row since returning from a seven-month injury lay-off in February, raced to a crushing 6-1 6-3 win in one hour and nine minutes to claim his third straight title and sixth of 2013. It was the first time the pair, who have won 28 grand slam titles between them, have met in a final since the 2011 French Open, an encounter Nadal won, and the fifth seed showed his great rival no mercy again. The clay court master was at his clinical best, converting five out of six break-point opportunities, while the Swiss had to settle for one out of two.

Federer accepted he could not live with his dominant opponent: “It didn’t go how I hoped and I was missing too many easy forehands and crucial points. He does an incredible job returning from the back of the court and it is hard because he covers the court so well. You need to serve accurately. When Rafa is at his best he creates opportunities in rallies and dictates. It was difficult to change.” Nadal’s win took their headto-head record to 20-10 in his favour.

Mancini’s Parting Message Sacked Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini had a dramatic way of saying goodbye to the club’s fans. The Italian was dropped a day after City lost to Wigan in a dramatic FA Cup final. The club also missed out on the Premier League and Champions League trophies under his leadership.

Stoke Player In Pigs Head Row

Stoke City FC have launched an investigation into a bizarre incident in which a pig’s head was placed in a player’s locker. Sources state that a row broke out among some of the squad when striker Kenwyne Jones apparently found the severed head among his clothes. Another first team player then reportedly had the windscreen of his car smashed.

In a statement, Stoke City said: “The club takes seriously reports of an incident at our training ground this afternoon. A full internal investigation will be carried out and those responsible for any unacceptable behaviour will be dealt with in accordance with the club’s disciplinary procedures.” The picture of the animal was posted by American winger Brek Shea on his Instagram account. Describing

the photograph, Shea wrote: “Locker room banter gone wild!!! #SAW” Commenting on the photosharing website, the girlfriend of another Stoke player, Heather Weir, wrote: “Totally love my boyfriend coming home to tell me a pigs head was getting passed round the changing rooms lol!” Kenwyne Jones is reportedly a Rastafarian, a religion which does not allow the eating of pork. In a string of posts on Twitter, the striker’s girlfriend Kissa Abdullah criticised the alleged prank: “Where I come from that’s not anywhere close 2 funny!

He kept quiet about his sacking but bought a full-page advert in the Manchester Evening News to deliver a farewell message to supporters. “Three unforgettable years,” the headline reads. Underneath a picture of Mancini waving and the three major trophies he won during his time at the club, the 48-year-old adds: “You will always be in my heart. Ciao.” Mancini joined Manchester City in December 2009 and guided the club to the FA Cup in 2010/11, the Premier League title in 2011/12 and the FA Community Shield last summer. The club’s chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak said in a statement announcing Mancini’s departure: “Roberto’s record speaks for itself and he has the respect and gratitude ... for all of his hard work and commitment over the last three and a half years.” Assistant manager Brian Kidd has been placed in temporary charge of the team, as Malaga Coach Manuel Pellegrini has been tipped as a possible replacement for Mancini, although the Chilean insists no agreement has been reached.

eifert paid his respects to the Premier League as “very exciting and interesting”, although it was noticeable that the strengths he values were financial: the English clubs’ huge earnings, particularly from overseas TV rights. “It is a perfectly marketed product all over the world,” he said, of the Premier League, whose 20 clubs will make around 1bn Euros more combined next season than the Bundesliga’s 18. It is the league with the most financial opportunities in Europe and we will never overtake them financially.” Yet that financial disparity has not led the Bundesliga clubs to follow English football into selling up to single mega-rich owner, or over pricing ground tickets. German clubs have reaffirmed their commitment to the now familiar rule which maintains democratic ownership by fans: that a majority control (“50% plus one”), must be held by members. “It is a question of philosophy and by far the majority want to stay with it,” he said. There are exceptions, with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg historically owned by the Bayer and Volkswagen corporations. “Nobody loves a club more than the members, and this keeps supporters with that emotion close to the club. We think it gives clubs and the league stability too, because nobody can

come overnight and buy a club.” The control by supporters of even these two European giants — Bayern 82% owned by their 187,865 members; 30,000 Dortmund fans control the voting rights – links directly to the maintenance of ticket prices as low as 13 Euros at Bayern and 11 Euros at Dortmund in standing areas, and cheaply priced seating too. “This is about giving people who cannot afford the business seats the opportunity to come,” says Seifert. “There is no rule requiring this; it is a feeling of the clubs, to have a mixture of society, the whole society, in our stadiums. The democratic control by members also means that if management want to raise ticket prices, the members may say: we want different management.” Christian Müller, the Bundesliga’s former chief financial officer, now chief executive of Bundesliga 2 club Dynamo Dresden, recalls the commitment to memberownership weakening 10 years ago when the league felt itself to be struggling in the Premier League’s slipstream. The Bundesliga began then to increase the value of its TV deals, and from 2000 the clubs began to invest in youth academies after the German national team failed in the European Championship: “The clubs realised to be successful is not only a question of money,” Müller said. “The vast majority of people support the 50%+1 rule. Football is considered to be a public good, and people can be truly a part of it, by being members of a club.” Bayern, without doubt one

of the greats of Europe’s with 202m Euros commercial income, which includes a growing number of corporate sponsorships, stormed their way to Wembley with a wage bill, a reported £140m in 2011-12, well below Manchester City, United, Chelsea and Arsenal. Dortmund’s wage bill was £68m for Jürgen Klopp’s young squad, £134m less than City spent in 2011-12 and lower than seven Premier League clubs including Aston Villa. While Premier League clubs spent 67% of their huge income on wages, Seifert said the Bundesliga clubs spent only 38% of theirs on players’ wages, despite their lower income. Seifert recognises the fear that Bayern’s financial muscle, their 368m Euros turnover almost double that of Dortmund’s 189m Euros, will dominate the Bundesliga, a concern deeper now Bayern have snapped up for next season Klopp’s key midfielder Mario Götze, who, incidentally, will miss Saturday’s final through injury. Uefa might consider how it manages the Champions League income, Seifert argues, so as not to increase the gap, but he is cautious about putting the Bundesliga’s own financial balance into question. For now, he prefers to argue that Bayern have had a spectacularly great season but that continued superiority is not yet established. “If Bayern win the league the next two seasons 20 points ahead, I would say yes, something should change.” German football has conquered self-doubt to a strength, including the national team, now illuminated for all of Europe. They realised the growth in TV and commercial income while maintaining genuine clubs, owned by their supportermembers, not selling them to speculators, which is anathema to them. When Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund play their European final under the floodlights of Wembley, the English game, in its 150th year, might consider who is right.

S e A S o N S hopes and dreams all boil down to two huge games for CD Tenerife as they begin their two legged promotion play off challenge at home to hospitalet this Sunday with the away leg a week later, 11am at the Feixa Larga ground on the outskirts of Barcelona and televised live on TV Canarias.

The draw has paired runaway Segunda B group one winners Tenerife with a team that edged their group title

Loro on goal difference. The away leg could be tricky on the artificial pitch at Hospitalet so Tenerife will be looking to carry a good lead from this weeks noon kick off in Santa Cruz. The danger man for Hospitalet is Cirio who hit the target 21 times this season but Tenerife have the divisions top scorer Aridane after he stretched his seasons tally to 25 in the 2-2 final league game at Salamanca. Defensive selections will be key for coach Alvaro Cervera after errors proved costly, first Bruno failed to cut out a Moreira cross after four minutes and Borja had an easy task to slip the ball past back up goalie Roberto. His centre back partner Rigo

All hail Goal King Aridane

followed up with his own slip up, luckily Piojo didn’t punish him. Then on the half hour reckless Rigo got booked and was soon withdrawn to avoid further damage. The last big promotion, to the Primera, was built on a dynamic front pair of Alfaro and Nino, this time it’s Loro and Aridane stacking up the goals. Loro started the second half by slicing the home defence open only to see Chechu shoot wide. Aridane was waiting for his moment and smooth pull back from Cristo Martin set him up to fire Tenerife level after 67 minutes. It only took a couple of minutes for Aridane to strike again, this time Moyano gift wrapped it for him with a superb defence splitting long pass. Salamanca should never have got back but out of position Bruno flopped down to block an attack and when the ball was kicked at him it hit his hand and the ref harshly pointed to the spot. Lazaro sent Roberto the wrong way and it was all square again. Any home revival was cut short by the stupidity of De Lucas; Yeray did a hard tackle on his team mate so De Lucas steamed over to Yeray and shoved him in the chest in full view of the ref – bye bye Mr De Lucas. But enough of the meaningless dregs of the regular season, an island awaits. This season CD Tenerife are stronger in depth, more united in intent, and hungry for promotion – roll on Sunday.

JuMPiNG, throwing, running, leaping, and hurdling, the estadio Antonio Dominguez in Las Americas will be testing international athletes in all these areas when the Arona Combined events athletics meeting takes place on 1st and 2nd June.

Heading the British challenge are four top competitors Roger Skedd, Jo Rowland, Peter Glass, and Martin Brockman and there’s a local star to cheer, Jonay Jordan Schafer. Roger Skedd was born in Crewe but competes for the Sheffield Athletics Club. This dedicated decathlete has funded much of his training by working for a stripagram agency as a waiter and butler but this time he will be just looking to show his rivals a clean pair of heels. Pentathlete Jo Rowland was born in Horley and calls Crawley her home track when she is not studying at Brunel University. Decathlete Peter Glass from North Down, Northern Ireland is based with Liverpool Harriers and Martin Brockman from Maidstone will also be competing in the decathlon. n the end safety wasn’t that far away thanks to a storming second half of the season but bowing out with a 2-0 home win over Salamanca was one last reminder of what could have been for CD Marino.

Burning Brightly, CD Marino Go Out In Style

Spot the Ball at CD Marino Plenty of players have enhanced their reputations, Sandro was again on top form firing in a crisp fourth minute opener after Balduino pressured goalie Carmona into a half hearted headed clearance. Defender Gotor was as bad; his risky back header just evaded the close attention of Chema. Balduino is another player who has shone in the blue shirt, he showed some lovely close

control again and his powerful drive across the goal needed a strong block by a visiting defender to prevent a second goal. Raul Barcos overlapped on the right and put in a stinging shot that nearly evaded Carmona low in the corner. Another goal? It would have been rude not to, Barcos unlocked Salamanca again with a cross and Balduino juggled the ball under con-

trol before making a lethal finish. It was going so well, Chema was skinning Valverde on the right flank and Balduino was on the prowl for any half chances and tested Carmona again. Abel up against three fellow CD Tenerife loanees at Marino wasn’t making much of an impression and had to recover quickly with a back pass after losing the ball in a dan-

gerous position. Manu was the pick of the Salamanca forwards, Barcos kept him shackled most of the time but when he had a clear chance near the end of the half his header was woefully wide. Salamanca resumed the second half with a bit more spirit but found Matias alert between the sticks to save and Rayco made a couple of strong interventions as the home defence closed ranks. Inevitably the game dropped in tempo, neither side had anything to play for and Salamanca had a patched up line up with seven regulars missing. Balduino drew warm applause as he made way for Ramses and the visitors were so relaxed they subbed their keeper to give a young back up the

last 15 minutes. There will be a lot of changes in the summer at Marino, as the players swapped applause with the small crowd coach Almeida was already heading from the dug out, maybe an indication of his horizons for next campaign.

A Basket Full Of Play Off Patter Satisfaction

CB Canarias wrapped up their first season back in basketballs elite ACB League with their seventh home win to finish in an impressive 10th spot. Laboral Kutxa were flying high in second place but reputations mean little in the La Laguna fortress and they were dispatched 99 points to 94.

Levi Rost shone in all aspects of his game to top the scoring on 19 points closely followed by Fotio Lampropoulos with 17. The big blows were struck in the second quarter as the home side eclipsed their rivals 32-20 but it was another class performance from start to finish. There’s a lot of hard work

to be done before the new season in October, the club is fulfilling its obligation under the league rules to turn supporters into share holders of the club, a good move for future stability. After such a magnificent season it was hard to single out players but the club

chose Ricardo Uriz to lift the Santiago Martin trophy as Player of the Season with Blagota Sekulic and Levi Rost as runners up. On Tuesday night CB Canarias picked up the team award for 2012 at the APDT Tenerife sports press awards at the Teatro Guimera in Santa Cruz.

Promotion fever is not confined to Santa Cruz; football fans all around the island have big ambitions. Atletico Granadilla have made the Tercera Division play offs after finishing second and hope to jump up into CD Marino’s recently vacated Segunda B spot.

This Sunday Granadilla start their long campaign away to Gimnastica Segoviana with the home leg the weekend after. The Tercera has 18 regional groups so there is quite some way to go but Granadilla have added former CD Marino player Alberto Noah for the play offs. The 34 year old has plundered goals all over Tenerife with Ibarra, La Laguna, Las Zocas, and San Isidro and his past promotion experi-

ence could be vital. Hey don’t forget the ladies, CD Charco del Pino are looking to crash into the Primera Division Liga Femenina. Last Sunday they won their first round first leg play off game 2-1 at home to Granada in front of a 600 crowd with goals from Ana and Davinia. The away match is on Sunday then two more games could see them in the top womens league in Spain.

T

hiS Saturday’s Champions League final at Wembley is arguably the biggest game in world football, and will see the first ever all-German encounter between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

This final marks a strange kind of celebration for the Football Association’s 150th anniversary, with the triumphant arrival of two German clubs to compete for this highest prize. Both teams accession to the final has dispelled the comforting English line of recent years, that Germany’s insistently traditional football ways, their supporter-owned clubs, thousands of cheap tickets and homedeveloped young players, brought them little success in Europe. Christian Seifert, chief executive of the German Bundesliga, acknowledging his league’s imperfections, particularly the concern over Bayern’s dominance, but adds: “Yes, we are proud that we have two teams in the final. We have the feeling that we did more things right than wrong in the last 10 years.”
