How many of you will be tuning in to watch Eurovision this weekend? I have to admit that when I lived in the U.K. I was one of those fanatics that held parties especially for the occasion, all of us would dress up in red, white and blue, one year I even had red, white & blue rice! I used to put on ceefax (remember that?) so we could read what everyone was singing about, it was absolutely hilarious, and we all worshipped

Tenerife Weekly - 17th May - 23rd May 2013 Terry Wogan. Nowadays though, I tend not to bother watching. Back in the day, it used to be a fun event, but now, as with so many things, it has turned so political, that you can more or less work out who will vote for whom and it is all taken so seriously. I do wish Bonnie Tyler luck, hopefully she can at least beat the past few years’ disastrous scores, but I also wish the Spanish entry, ESDM - El Sueño De Morfeo (Morpheus’ Dream) luck too. With a name that long, they deserve to get somewhere!!!

I think that Angelina Jolie announcing that she has had a double mastectomy is to be applauded, see page 21. Her courage in carrying on her work in her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN, during her ordeal, and then going on to write about it can only help raise awareness of this hideous disease and help others who may be going through a similar situation. Angelina I salute you. See you all next week.

Continued from page 1 the car people competition Many congratulations to Betty Cooper & Steve White, the first winners of our motoring competition. They correctly said that the car was a Reliant Regal.

This will no doubt disappoint the loads of entries we had saying a Robin Reliant. The Reliant Regal was manufactured from 1953 until 1973. The Robin was first manufactured in October 1973, a direct replacement for the Reliant Regal. Del Boy’s three wheeled van is a 1967 Reliant Regal Supervan III, with the registration DHV 938D Betty & Steve from Los Menores have won a Sunday Carvery and mini golf for four at Vivo Treasure Island. This week’s competition question is on Motoring News page 39. Good Luck

Adeje Clean Up

englishtimeadeje.com

The streets and parks in the La Postura part of Adeje are undergoing a thorough cleaning particularly in the most populated parts of Adeje town.

Surgeons at a Barcelona research hospital have performed the world’s first successful operation to remove an obstruction of a larynx from a foetus.

They saved the life of the unborn baby after successfully performing life-saving surgery on the foetus as it was dying in its mother’s womb. Gonzalo Pardo Sanchez was suffering from congenital high airway obstruction syndrome (Chaos) – a rare condition which was preventing his lungs from expelling fluid through the trachea and causing his heart to fail. The outcome seemed inevitable, until his mother’s doctors stumbled across a potentially life-saving procedure that was yet to prove successful – until now. Gonzalo survived the procedure and medics confirmed that the baby, now a healthy 10 months old, sustained no

brain damage as a result of the operation. Gonzalo’s parents, Maria Jose Sanchez and Francisco Pardo, both 35, from Cartagena, told how doctors had initially advised them to have an abortion when they discovered their unborn baby was suffering from the rare condition. But then their doctor in Almeria heard about the team in Barcelona that had previously performed three previous operations in a bid to save unborn babies diagnosed with Chaos. All three procedures had proved unsuccessful, but it was a glimmer of light for Gonzalo’s devastated parents. ‘We came to Barcelona without any hope,’ said Mr Pardo. ‘They gave us an option and a chance.’ After finding out about the technique the couple endured a ‘difficult’ and ‘emotional’ seven day wait before Ms Sanchez went into surgery at the Fetal Medicine Centre Clinic Barcelona. The team

first manoeuvred the foetus into position inside the uterus, the most difficult part of the procedure, before three surgeons spent 22 minutes removing the membrane blocking Gonzalo’s larynx. Eduard Gratacos, head of the unit in Barcelona, explained surgeons were able to perforate the membrane ‘quite easily’, adding that getting access to the mother’s uterus and in turn the baby’s trachea was the part loaded with risk: ‘One move a millimetre to the wrong side of the larynx could have caused serious problems,’ he said. In total the operation has been performed on four other occasions around the world, but in each of those cases the babies either died or suffered brain damage or serious respiratory problems. After receiving Gonzalo’s clean bill of health, his emotional parents have said they are looking forward to enjoying life with their ‘fit and healthy’ son.

According to the councillor for town services, Gonzalo Delgado Díaz, this is part of an overall clean-up for the area, with La Postura the first to get the treatment. Workers have now spent over a week, carrying out operations at night when possible in order to reduced disturbances to residents going about their daily tasks. The councillor said that to help maintian zones looking their best it was also up to residents to stick to their side of the bargain in terms of continuing to use the recycling bins all over the borough, use rubbish bins on the streets and those in their complexes during the established hours, and of course

pick up their dog droppings. One of the sticky and somewhat tricky clean-up tasks that is being undertaken is the removed of dried in chewing-gum from the pavements. Each and every piece of this masticated mess has to be first burnt and then removed with a spatula – no

machine will do the job as well. So think about the next time your chewing gum loses its flavour and you just throw in on the pavement. Use a bin! Overall the council hope that most of the town’s streets and green zones will be cleaned up by the time summer arrives.

Dear Editor

I have had occasion to need to park in the centre of Los Cristianos recently on an almost daily basis.

The inconsiderate parking of cars for sale in prime spots has become totally unacceptable. Some of these vehicles are parked in the same spot for days on end. I seem to recall reading that the local council were to start a scheme for removing

offending cars to the pound and fining the owners accordingly. Hopefully something can be done to solve this indiscriminate abuse of public parking areas. On my visit today, in the area of the Bus Station and the Valdes Centre, there were 16 vehicles being offered for sale. Yours sincerely Clive Rollinson Concerned Ratepayer.

news On THe rOCK

fasnia Ayuntamiento has threatened to close the new refuge to which the Live Arico dogs were moved last year because it still lacks a licence. Mayor Damian Pérez said that if the Cabildo delays any longer in handing over reports to request the licence, the local authority will order the closure of the shelter which has now been open nine months. Mayor Pérez said that the municipality had asked the Cabildo twice for the documentation needed to obtain authorization. granadilla Ayuntamiento has said that it absolutely rejects the proposals introduced by the Asociación de Empresarios y Comerciantes de El Médano (ASEC) which would have allowed dogs to use one of the town’s beaches. Environment councillor Jacob Donate emphatically ruled out the suggestion, saying that if allowed, “Beaches would be destroyed and tourism ruined”. Councillor Donate said he was surprised that the suggestion had been made at all, particularly given the area’s blue flag awards, and said that, if anything, the council would be tightening up rules for beach use, rather than relaxing them. Panga is a popular fish in Tenerife, not least because it’s really quite inexpensive compared to, say, salmon or hake, but the OCU (Organización de consumidores y usuarios – consumers and users organization) recommends that it should not be eaten more than once a week because mercury and the pesticide trifluralin have been found in it. The OCU says that the quantities are not high enough to pose a health risk, and not uniformly in all specimens tested, but sufficient to warrant advice not to eat the fish more than once a week. Adeje Ayuntamiento is to hold a basic Russian for receptionist’s course to help the employment prospects of those in the municipality given the increasing number of Russian visitors to Tenerife. The course costs 75 Euros, a price which includes all teaching materials, and will be held in the Costa Adeje Tourism offices (CDTCA) in C. Las Jarcias, El Galeón; the exact dates are to be confirmed but will be in June-July. There is more information available by phone on 922 050 150 or by email to adejeimpulsa@adeje.es. Anyone wishing to organize one of the new Certificado Energéticos, or to confirm that someone else is legally able to issue them, now has an official regional contact point. Details for the Canaries specifically are: Consejería de Empleo, Industria y Comercio. Dirección General de Industria y Energía C/ León y Castillo, 200; Edificio Servicios Múltiples III, Planta 4ª; 35071 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Tel: 928-899-400. Full information is available at www.gobcan.es The Minister of economía, hacienda y Seguridad, Javier González Ortiz, has announced that Madrid has rejected the Canarian Government’s request for a seaplane to be permanently based here to fight summer blazes. Sr Ortiz said that the regional Parliament had not been asking for increased resources from the national government, but simply for resources to be fairly distributed throughout the Spanish regions. As such, the Canarian Government had asked for at least one of these aircraft to be based here in the summer months to fight the devastation such fires can cause rather than for the islands to have to wait at least 20 hours for one to arrive, a delay no other region needed to suffer. La Laguna university has now opened its registration for the Adeje Summer University ( Universidad de Verano de Adeje) 2013, which will take place on 15 – 19 July. Thirteen courses are on offer, ranging from the fields of social and health sciences, to those of humanities, architecture and engineering. Prices vary depending on course and borough residency, but generally are between 25 and 70 Euros. There are full details of the courses at www.adeje. es/esp/1106_cursos_.asp, and those interested can register at Adeje Cultural Centre between 9am and 1pm on weekdays.

Caring For The Sea

http://englishtimeadeje.com/

ThIS picture, released by the Tenerife Cabildo shows, yet again, the need for all of us to care for the sea as one of our most precious environmental assets as well as home to thousands of living species.

These turtles were rescued off the El Medano coast in April and are just two of the 1,200 rescued in the last 15 years by the insular rescue centre which is Cabildo funded. According to the experts fishing nets are one of the main culprits, along with plastic bags and plastic can rings which choke the turtles and other marine creatures.

Estrellas Omni Beach Charity Event

eSTreLLAS Theatre School rocked omni Beach venue last Sunday during a special event to help raise funds for Amate, an Association of women fighting the breast cancer cause, here in Tenerife.

Killer Seas of the Canaries

A

By Marc Craig fter last week’s article about the destruction the oceans around these beautiful islands could inflict on the rest of the planet, I thought it might be “fun” to look at a few of the marine nasty’s that can be just a few feet away from our sun loungers just waiting for you to dip your toes in!!

Sharks!!

You might be dismayed to learn that the waters around the Canaries are teeming with sharks! Here’s a few you really don’t wanna meet: 1 - Angel Shark Not a “man-eater” but this aggressive little chap buries itself in the sand and has been known to attack unwary divers- as instructor Pekko Vuorela found out the hard way, when his hand was “shredded” by the alienesque fish during a dive off the coast of Tenerife. 2 - Blue Shark A common shark in most waters, it is in fact the most widely distributed animal in the world. This was the attacker in a non-fatal encounter with a skin-diver back in 1980 off the coast of San Juan de la Rambla, Tenerife. The diver suffered severe injuries to his thigh. Blues can reach up to 4 metres in length. 3 - Cazones Meaning “big hunter” this is a bit misleading as it seems to refer to several different species of small shark from dogfish to larger species up to 1.8 metres.

Email Marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com 5 - Hammerhead Shark Another known man-eater, they can reach up to 5 metres in length and are one of the few shark species that “school” meaning they live in large groups, hunting and feeding together which makes “feeding frenzies” more likely. 6 - The Great White Shark Star of “Jaws” and undisputed Daddy of them all! Nomadic by nature, this fearsome shark often swims through these waters- in 2010 a local news story was written

a nasty sting including (although not a true jellyfish) my old friend the Portuguese Man o’ War. During spawning literally thousands of tiny specimens can be floating just off the beach, right where the banana boats throw you off-as I witnessed myself several years ago!

Puffer fish

Ok you’d have to be stupid enough to take this home and eat it for it to kill you, but the toxin in a puffer fish is stronger than cyanide and although Sushi chefs are specially

Moray Eel

hunters and top of the food chain.

Stingray

Widespread across most of the Earth’s seas, these are not normally aggressive, however it’s wise to be cautious, one of these guys took out the world famous Steve Irwin, “crocodile hunter” when it’s steak knife shaped sting punctured his chest, piercing his heart and killed him.

Moray Eel

Several types of Moray Eels are extremely common in Canarian waters, and are fished locally as they are considered a delicacy. The Fangtooth or Tiger Moray hides in cracks and crevices sometimes very close to the shore and can be observed whilst snorkelling- but beware, they bite, have extremely sharp teeth, and bacteria in their mouths can cause serious infection.

Giant Squid

In 2011 off the coast of Los Gigantes, the remains of a 26 foot long Giant Squid was recovered. A live specimen has never been seen by humans; they are deep sea dwellers and were the inspiration for the monster in the Jules Verne novel “20,000 leagues under the sea”.

So, fancy a swim?

Although there are some nasty’s out there, it should be pointed out, there has NEVER been a shark fatality in Canarian waters, or even a very serious attack. Most creatures out there that can do us harm can be easily avoided with a bit of common sense and most of the really nasty stuff (Box Jellyfish, Stonefish, Sea Snakes and the Blue Ringed Octopus) don’t inhabit our seas -just to put it into perspective, statistically you are far more likely to be killed by a cow than a Shark, so go on, go for a paddle!!!

Giant Squid

4 - Mako Shark A known man-eater, this shark has been known to leap higher than 9m into the air and there are documented cases of Mako’s jumping into fishing boats. Scientists believe that they can swim up to speeds of 100km/h. They are the fearsome sharks in the movie “Deep Blue Sea”.

about an incident at a fish farm just off the beach at Palm Mar, where a huge Great White got caught in the nets, however it’s seems now that this may have been misinformationregardless of this, they are out there!

Jellyfish.

Several species out there can give

trained to only prepare the safe parts, once in a while a diner dies!!

Lionfish

Once only found in the IndoPacific region, these “invasive” fish have now made their home in the Atlantic and have venomous spines that can cause headaches, vomiting and agonising pain. They are voracious

Nere Izerdie Celebrate Their 20 Year Journey

Celeste, Irina & Seva of Mare Nostrum

By Colin Kirby oLD mojitos, sparkling music and dance, with good friends and colleagues, it was the perfect way to celebrate 20 years of travel and excursions for nere Izerdie. The company is used to opening up all corners of Tenerife to entertain and wow visitors but this time it was a short trip from their Los Cristianos base at edificio Chayofe to Siam Park beach. On a scorching hot evening quite a few were tempted to dip their toes as water gently lapped in from the Wave Palace. The atmosphere was relaxed and informal as the Nere Izerdie staff took a bow and with a video show looked back over how the company has grown. Pink was a strong theme and made a nice mix with the white sand and the clear blue sky. The dancers of Enigma added spectacle and precision with their acrobatic show but for most of the gathering lifting a cold drink or tasting a few nibbles set just the right pace. It was a lovely setting, Nere Izerdie know all the best places to go, and as memories and stories of

the first 20 years were proudly swapped there was much talk of new challenges and more great attractions. Theme parks, boat trips, shows, and visiting some of our nearby islands, The Canaries have so much to offer, it’s good to have knowledgeable guides to make days and nights out a complete experience, the good folk at Nere Izerdie are looking forward to sharing new pleasures with new friends over the next 20 years. You can find out more about their range of excursions at www.nereizerdie.com

www.tenerife-weekly.com Each year the Tenerife Sur Lions sponsor “Dream” holidays in Tenerife and the UK for groups of special needs and disadvantaged kids.

With members of Tenerife Sur Lions at the airport to greet them, a party of thirty two special needs and under privileged youngsters along with their carers arrived in Tenerife for the start of a Dream Holiday organised by the Tenerife Sur Lions in conjunction with supporting Lion’s groups in England. Plus there was additionally for the first time in the history of Lions Dream Holidays a small group of six from a children’s foster home in Warsaw sponsored by several Lion’s Clubs in Poland. Staying at the Princesa Dacil Hotel in Los Cristianos, and with other club members on hand to help, they were quickly checked in by the friendly and efficient hotel reception staff for the start of their week long holiday. And what a week it was! First trip on their list was a visit to the Medieval Castle of San Miguel where they enjoyed a meal –medieval style! During the meal they were entertained by the knights of the castle demonstrating their riding and combat skills. There followed a fire-eater breathing billowing flames from his mouth, then a falconer who sent his falcon swooping over their heads. The evening continued with all them cheering on their champion knight. On Monday it was an early start for a day at the Loro Parque, where they were captivated by the exciting exhibits and thrilled by the shows that featured the antics of the sealions, and of the whales and dolphins

who added to the fun by deliberately splashed them with their tails. Many of the other animals there left them wide-eyed with excitement. With so many things to see the day came all too quickly to an end. The week continued with a day at Siam park and a boat trip to see whales and dolphins at sea. It really was a special experience for these young people to see these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. A farewell party was held at the Princesa Dacil hotel to bring the holiday to a close which was also joined

by many of the people who behind the scenes had worked throughout the week to make it all happen. There was entertainment with everyone soon enjoying the singing of Ian Anderson along with some great performances by the youngsters themselves. Following a fantastic clown show of juggling and illusions there was more sing and dancing to finish off both the party evening and to bring the holiday to an end. Undoubtedly it was a “Dream Holiday” come true for these special youngsters but the reality for this holiday lies with the “Dream

Makers” - all of you who made it possible. Those of you who generously donate to and buy from our charity shops; those volunteers and members who staff them; the staff and management of the Princesa Dacil Hotel; the Castillio San Miguel; the Loro Parque Fundacion; the Crew of the Monte Carlo; Cozy Cafe; Ian Anderson and Vanna Shows plus many, many, more - THANK YOU!

Live Arico Pets Animal Welfare Supporters (PAWS)

WHEN THE SYSTEM WORKS WELL.....

This week, a concerned member of the public saw three dogs struggling to stay afloat in a water tank near San Miguel. He called 112, who contacted the Local Police, and together with an animal loving member of the Ayuntamiento they worked really hard to get the dogs out. Sadly the elder one could not be saved, but two far younger dogs were brought out alive. Live Arico were called in to assist, and yes, the dogs were micro chipped. Not only that, but their owner had reported to the police that they had escaped his property, so all details were on file, and we were able to return the two dogs home safely. Please, take advantage of our micro-chipping offer for the next 4 weeks. Micro chipping and rabies vaccinations are legal requirements yet

far too many people ignore this. Let Live Arico P.A.W.S help you get things up to date. Once again, in collaboration with Hospivet Sur Las Chafiras we are offering micro chipping and rabies vaccinations for just 25 Euros!!! That is less than half the normal price of 54 Euros. As we are subsidising this campaign, it is for a limited period only, until the 12th June. For just 10 Euros more you can also have your dog vaccinated with the Vanguard 7 vaccine, covering everything. You will not find cheaper!! POOL AND DARTS KNOCKOUT COMPETITION Live Arico PAWS will be staging their first Pool and Darts knockout competition on Sunday the 26th May at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf. Registrations will take place from 12 noon or

alternatively you can pre register by calling Sharon Edens on 671 783 117. So polish off your cue, sharpen your darts and get down for a great afternoon of fun, just 5 Euros entry for each competition with the winners and runners up receiving cash prizes. Look forward to seeing you there. BARGAINS GALORE To be found in our charity shops this month. Come and browse in Los Cristianos, Calle Reveron, near the children’s play park, where Kel, Jackie and the lovely volunteers open between 10 and 4pm daily. Alternatively, have a look at Siobhan’s Aladdin’s Cave in San Eugenio, near Amanda’s Bar and opposite Hotel La Nina. Both shops are closed Sundays. Come and see, you will be surprised at the high quality goods at knock down prices. Happy shopping.

Agricultural Street Markets

Everyone is familiar with the agricultural markets, where small producers often sell fruit and veg – and much more – that is fresher and cheaper than that offered by the supermarkets.

Now, there will be street markets as well, organized by the agricultural market. They will be held in the church square in Los Abrigos on Tuesdays between 5 and

9pm, in Plaza de Galicia in El Médano on Wednesdays between 8am and 2pm, and in

Plaza de la Recova in Granadilla on Thursdays, again between 8am and 2pm.

New Road Signs – A Waste Of Money?

By Janet Anscombe

Many will by now have noticed that new road signs have been appearing, particularly around motorway junctions. The new signs are large squares of around three metres with large photos showing the attraction most associated with the place name – e.g. cliffs on the signs saying Los Gigantes. Others in different parts show the auditorium, pilot whales, the Drago tree, or Teide itself.

These new signs are part of the Tenerife Cabildo’s Plan E, a response, says the Cabildo, to demands from tourists and businesses for better information provision and directions for visitors, and transforming Tenerife into the first Spanish destination with such touristrelated road signs. Well, yes, that was indeed needed, but some will be appalled that the signs, some 650 or so for 300 tourist attractions, will cost around 1,000,000 Euros. The final cost for the project, indeed, will be nearer 1,500,000 Euros, to be funded equally by the Cabildo and the Canarian Government, and many will surely ask whether there wasn’t a better use for such a huge sum of money. Education, health, infrastructure are all being hit by cut after cut, public sector workers

many to mention. The organisers would like to thank Babs Broomhead for all her help in putting it together and allowing the use of her venue. Thanks to all of Babs staff and everyone who helped and came along.

are being laid off by the thousand, and yet we have gone from inadequate signage to huge pictorial imagery, from one extreme to the other. Do tourists really need to see the image of the place they are already heading for? Some will be equally appalled that this plan is also being devolved onto the municipalities, Ayuntamientos now in receipt of a manual containing instructions on how to match the official installation and design. The first local authorities to proceed with the project are Arona, Adeje, Puerto de la Cruz, Santiago del Teide and San Miguel de Abona. Where the money is to come from is anyone’s guess, and I would have thought Arona, at least, would be better employed spending that money in complying with the recent Court judgment to pay the lifeguards to make its beaches safe, rather than putting up signs to beaches where no lifeguards are in place.

Jennifer’s Daughters Still Fighting For Justice

The daughters of Jennifer Mills-Westley have said they were still fighting for justice for their mother, despite her killer being convicted following her murder.

The 60-year-old had recently retired to Tenerife and was beheaded by paranoid schizophrenic Deyan Deyanov two years ago. Her daughters Sam and Sarah Mills-Westley said they were seeking an independent review into why the 29-year-old Bulgarian was released from a psychiatric unit in Wales a year before the death of their mother. The trial of Mrs Mills-Westley’s killer was featured on Channel 4’s Dispatches this week. The documentary followed the daughters as they visited the aunt of Deyanov in Wales where the Bulgarian had been sectioned to a Denbighshire hospital psychiatric unit on two occasions in 2010 after suffering from schizophrenic episodes. They said mental health services had “failed” Deyanov and the Mills-Westley family after he was discharged from Glan Clwdy Hospital in north Wales with no apparent treatment plan. He had travelled to Tenerife shortly after his release in October. The daughters revealed in the programme that they have to write to their mother’s killer to ask his permission to view his health records to find out why he had been released by the Betsi Cadwaladr University

Health Board. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said its inquiries were continuing Deyanov was a drifter who believed he was Jesus Christ and heard voices commanding him to kill. He had been living rough and taking drugs in a derelict building on a nearby beach. After a series of violent attacks in January 2011, he was committed to a Tenerife psychiatric unit but released on bail the following month. Just days before Mrs Mills-Westley’s murder a warrant had been issued for his arrest. In a statement the sisters said: “We’re glad that we have been able to share the difficult journey that we have been on for the past two years; we have fought tirelessly and yet have so little information. It is evident that there have been failings in the care and treatment of Deyanov, therefore we hope the Welsh authorities will accept that it’s in the public interest to provide us with the information that we have repeatedly requested and to also instruct an independent enquiry.” Deyanov was sentenced to 20 years in a secure psychiatric unit following his conviction in February. Samantha Mills-Westley, 39, and her sister Sarah, 43, have criticised the authorities in north Wales for their handling of Deyanov: “We still haven’t got justice for our mum, and what’s really important for us now as a family is an independent review.”

The sisters said they know that the health board conducted an inquiry into Deyanov’s care but they have been refused access to it. They were told in a letter that “lessons have been learnt” but not what the lessons were because of patient confidentiality. Ms Sarah Mills-Westley said: “I now have to sit and write a letter to the man who beheaded my mother asking him for his permission to have access to his medical records. Bearing in mind I saw

him in court, he is clearly delusional, he’s still hearing voices, he’s a very sick man. After the brutality of that attack against my mother he still has more rights than I do as a victim, and the rest of our family. That cannot be right.” Betsi Cadwaldadr University Health Board told the programme it was “naturally deeply sympathetic to the predicament of the family... and fully understands their desire to seek answers”. The board said de-

tailed investigations into Deyanov’s treatment are continuing and it would be premature to offer comment. A spokesperson said: “Any response we are able to provide is, in any event, likely to be limited due to confidentiality restrictions imposed on us under the Data Protection Act. “However, we can state categorically that the decision to discharge Mr Deyanov was in no way influenced by issues of funding or shortages of beds.”

For Sale: Buenavista Golf Course

Janetanscombe.com The Cabildo has put shares in the publicly-owned Buenavista golf course up for sale for just over 18.3 million Euros. Minister of Presidency and Finance, Victor Perez, said that the decision was “the most appropriate and cost effective for the interests of the Cabildo”. Sr Perez explained that the decision formed part of the plan for the restructuring and rationalization of the public sector to make it smaller and more efficient in a climate of austerity and control of public spending.

best course in Europe in 2011. The golf course has struggled to make a profit with local sources suggesting that the course is too far north for tourists, and there is little interest in golf for people living in the area. It is thought that the poor state of the public roads close to the course has not helped the situation.

Can You Help?

My Mother, Patricia Mary Scott and my Father Roger Arthur Scott migrated to Tenerife quite a few years ago and like anyone who lives in Tenerife love it. Unfortunately 3 years ago this October coming, my Mother Patricia passed away very quickly, leaving my Dad alone. He lives in Abades and travels back to the UK to visit family, taking my Mothers ashes with him; he can’t bear to be away from her.

A few days ago he returned home to find that his house had been broken into, his belongings, furniture, drawers were all thrown around. He began to put it all back together as this is what my Mom would have wanted, back tidy, when he realised that my Moms ashes were missing. They appear to be the only thing that has been taken apart from a small amount of loose change. Dad is not

proficient in the language and has not reported it to police as far as I know. He believes it may have been children who have done this, as nothing else was taken and perhaps they could not read the plaque on the front of the urn and being so young, have not realised the fact they have taken someone’s ashes. This has emotionally devastated my Dad. He does not care who has broken in to his home, he would just like them returned. The urn is a light wooden box with 3 cream roses on the front with the plaque saying Patricia Mary Scott and birth and death dates in brass. I and my family especially my Dad would be so grateful if you could help.

Kind regards Debbie Byrne Eldest daughter living in Australia.

If anyone can help, please email editor@ tenerife-weekly.com and I will pass on the information.

N

orwegian Air Shuttle is continuing its European expansion. The company has announced that it will launch new routes from Hamburg, Cologne and Munich to several Spanish destinations this autumn.

“The expansion in the German market is part of our future strategy to expand our presence outside of the Nordic region in order to meet the strong competition in the airline industry. We see that Germans frequently choose Norwegian when flying to Scandinavia and we believe that there is a demand for a quality airline that offers inexpensive fares between Germany and Spain. We are looking forward to welcoming passengers on board our modern and more eco-friendly aircraft,” said CEO of Norwegian Bjorn Kjos. From the end of October, Norwegian launches brand new routes between Germany and Spain and will fly to Malaga, Alicante,

12 “Hurry Up” – Royal Artist Rapped New Hunting After 18 Years Portrait Delay Craze - Pigsticking Tenerife Weekly - 17th May - 23rd May 2013

hunTerS in Spain have re-adopted Pigsticking as part of their culture; they are taking up spears and chasing down wild boars on horseback. The country now has a Pigsticking International Club, and the activity has been officially included in Spanish hunting regulations since last summer. hunters stalk pigs all day before dispatching them from horseback with ninefoot spears.

n artist, who was commissioned to paint a family portrait of Spain’s royals eighteen years ago, has been told to “speed up” and finish the artwork.

One of Spain’s most renowned living painters, Antonio Lopez, was given the commission to paint King Juan, Carlos Queen Sofia and their three children in 1995 for which he was paid the equivalent of 300,000 euros. Now aged 77, the artist has been given a final deadline of the end of the year and told to move his studio into Madrid’s Royal Palace in a bid to “block out distractions”. The canvas measuring 11ft by 10ft has been repainted several times in the intervening years as the artist struggled to find a composition he was happy with. Last year he was told to finish it in time for King Juan Carlos 75th birthday, celebrated on January 5, 2013 but the deadline passed and no painting was produced. Spain’s Department of National Heritage, which commissioned the work, has now insisted it must be completed by year end. Jose Rodriguez Spiteri, President of Spain’s Patrimonio Nacional, the public body that oversees public art collections and royal sites, has said: “The painting has to be finished now, before the end of the year. This cannot be a story without an end; I don’t want the

day to come when I have to let visitors into the Royal Palace and say ‘here is the portrait of the Royal family, unfinished by the painter Antonio Lopez’. I trust that we are now in the final stages of the painting. It is a very good work and he needs to block out distractions to be able to finish it,” he added on the decision to set up the artist in a studio within the palace itself. The painting was supposed to show the immediate Royal family in a relaxed pose and without the formality of the traditional court portraiture style. However, in the years since the work was

commissioned the King and Queen have aged considerably, seen their three children marry, their eldest daughter Elena divorce, and now have eight grandchildren. Antonio Lopez, who had a retrospective of 130 of his works exhibited in Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in 2011 and is celebrated for his hyperrealism style, has admitted that he struggled with the work: “I didn’t know how to do it before. I don’t think I had the ability to solve it until now. I just hope it turns out well, that is what worries me the most,” he said.

The Interior Ministry said that the gang acquired hashish in Spain and transported it to the United Kingdom. Seven suspects were arrested in Elche and two alleged ringleaders were nabbed in Britain. Three houses in the Spanish cities of Orihuela and Elche were searched. A sawn-off shotgun with some ammunition cartridges were amongst items seized. The ministry says the investigation began in January when police were alerted to the existence of a criminal organization on Spain’s east coast. The Development Counselors International conducted a survey involving meeting planners to identify best locations and practices for meetings. The study focused on the places that were noted for being the top choice for meetings. While the study was in the main about the perception of meeting planners in North America regarding location, it also covered the best practices for those meetings. For this, DCI Vice President Karyl Leigh Barnes said that they went directly to the customers of the meeting industry. Spain and United Kingdom emerged as two of the top nations preferred for international meeting locations. Specifically, London (20.2%) was the top choice for international meeting followed by Barcelona and Paris each getting a 10.1% share in the survey. Singapore (7.3%) and Hong Kong (6.2%) were also at the top 5. THOUSANDS of teachers and pupils across Spain abandoned the classroom for the second general education strike in a year. According to Public Schooling, turnout for the strike was 72% among staff at public establishments and 25% in the private sector. However, the Ministry of Education said the figure was less than 20%. The strike followed two weeks of protests that involved a raft of lock-ins, vigils and other demonstrations at education institutions across Spain. Although the strike was in most part peaceful, some clashes with law enforcement were reported. In Valencia, two police offers were slightly injured in an altercation with several students. The demonstrations follow a series of government reforms including cuts of 6.7 billion Euros since 2010, the reinforcement of core subjects and establishing external examinations. Critics argue that the changes will serve to create an elitist system that segregates poorer students and dismantles the concept of public education. The Bank of Spain will demand banks, financial entities, fund managers and brokers disclose monthly every single operation in their stock and fixed-income portfolios. Spain’s central bank will then turn this information to the European Central Bank, which will become essential to set the bases for the creation of a European banking union, the paper adds. Up until now, the Bank of Spain would collect only operations carried out with non-residents in Spain. Under the new regulation, all transactions, included those between Spain residents will have to be reported to the central bank, according to the newspaper.

Most Downloads For 3D Pistol In Spain

Blueprints for a plastic gun that can be produced on a 3-D printer were downloaded 100,000 times in two days, with Spain leading the global rush to obtain the directions.

The Liberator gun was designed by Defense Distributed, a non-profit organisation set-up to “defend access to arms as guaranteed by the United States Constitution”. The plans were made available for download on their website on May 6th but were taken down three days later after receiving a demand from the US State Department. Officials insisted they were removed immediately to give the Department time to ensure they were compliant with US arms export control laws. But copies of the document, which was downloaded from the site over 100,000 times, are now being exchanged through censorship-resistant file-sharing sites such as Mega and The Pirate Bay. The most downloads came from Spain, according to reports, the United States came in second followed by Brazil, Germany and the United Kingdom. The plastic pistol can be made for as little as $1,000. Most parts of the gun can be ‘printed’ using high-strength thermoplastic, making them resistant to metal detectors and easier to smuggle into places where guns are banned. But the firing pin and ammunition must still be constructed of metal and the gun can only fire one shot at a time, meaning questions remain whether it is as dan-

gerous as a real firearm. At least one U.S. lawmaker has already jumped to ban the devices. But Defense Distributed founder and law student Cody Wilson says the premise of open-source gun technology is more important than the limitations of the Liberator: “Now the gun is out there nothing can take it back,” he said. “I’ve talked to people who have walked into hacker spaces and seen a row of printers all printing Liberator parts. The next big thing is getting a picture of one of these things printed out in another country,” he adds, adding that Liberators are already being printed in China assisted by

a Chinese version of the instructions in the download package. Mr Wilson insists he has done nothing wrong by releasing the Liberator plans for download. He claims there is an exemption for non-profit organisations distributing technical files that are in the public interest. He also insists that the fact they can still be downloaded elsewhere means attempts by the US government to censor access to arms information have been defeated: “This is the conversation I want,” he says. “Is this a workable regulatory regime? Can there be defence trade control in the era of the Internet and 3D printing?”

Egg Donation Increase For Cash Strapped Women The economic crisis in Spain and due to permissive laws and cash-strapped young women, Spain has a booming industry of egg donation and in vitro fertilization.

Whilst other countries in Europe closely restrict the business of fertility, hopeful mothers turn to donors in Spain because of lower costs and quicker turnaround times. According to a 2010 report prospective parents can receive an egg two weeks after request in Spain compared to two years in the UK because of restrictions Other rules of economics are at play: There’s a high demand for eggs and they are in short supply. But it’s controversial for women to receive payment for their eggs. Therefore, women are paid compensation for their time and inconvenience, rather than receiving payment for the eggs they are giving up. There are many stories around that tell of Spanish women who, when faced with eviction from their homes, decided to become egg donors. In less than two years, one woman donated 14 times and earned around 10,000 Euros keeping her family from poverty. Spain is enduring a huge financial crisis, but medical tourism and egg donation in particular,

is thriving. Firms are using this to their advantage and advertising for donors. Private clinic Institut Marquès advertises in universities, targeting its message to young donors and appealing to their desire to help others with the slogan, “What you don’t give will be lost. Even your eggs.” The egg donation business preys upon financially desperate women who have little recourse for health risks linked with egg donation. And there are many of them: Ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome in an estimated 0.5 to 5% of women, which can lead to stroke or sometimes death. Other women experi-

ence enlarged ovaries and a heightened risk of cancer as well as premature menopause and infertility. Although there are regulations in place, there is no central policing body; women donate beyond legal limits in order to keep getting paid. In Spain, a maximum of six children can be born from one donor but because there’s no national registry, women are able to donate to various clinics. The profile of women who sell their eggs and wombs are largely the same. They put their own reproductive health at risk to allow fellow women, at least those who can afford it, to give life.

Protecting Coastal Pledge Walker Saved Slammed By Greenpeace By Pet Dog BernhArD Schulz, a german national, went out for a walk Saturday with his black Labrador, Bijou, but failed to return; causing his wife, Kirsten, to fear the 74-year-old man had died.

The lower house of parliament, controlled by the ruling conservative Popular Party (PP) have passed a building reform that pledges to protect the “sensitive and vulnerable” coastline, as well as the owners of properties already built close to the shore.

However, environmental groups have complained it would not save the miles of shoreline already blighted by concrete. They have warned it would merely entrench private building projects in coastal zones where many unsightly concrete blocks blossomed under previous legislation dating to the 1980s. As lawmakers debated the bill, Greenpeace activists climbed the lower house of parliament in Madrid and hung a banner reading “the PP is selling our coasts”, until police climbed up and chased them down. Greenpeace’s coastal affairs spokeswoman Pilar Marcos said the law “sets us back 25 years in environmental protection” and panders to the “private interests” of property developers. It is the culmination of the barbarities of the building boom,” she said in a statement. Greenpeace said police arrested eight people involved in the protest. Among the contested clauses in the law is one that extends leases of builtup coastal land to 75 years. Environ-

It also reduces to 20 metres in some cases the protection zone that must be kept between buildings and the sea. The environmental spokesman for the opposition Socialists in parliament, Jose Luis Abalos, said the reform “puts

an end to the most serious attempt ever made in Spain to protect our coasts”. He said that only 30% of Spain’s coasts were not occupied by human activity. The government insisted the reform would protect Spain from a repeat of infamous projects such as the Algarrobico, a 21-story concrete hotel built in a national park on the southern coast.

She had been worried because her husband suffers from Parkinson’s disease and had been unable to take his medication for the three days he was missing. Bernhard was transferred to a hospital in Denia where he is recovering.

Spains Wildest Festivals

Every year thousands of thrill-seekers descended on the small city of Pamplona in northern Spain to take part in the legendary Running of the Bulls. In recent years, other fiestas like Valencia’s tomato-throwing bash, La Tomatina, have also made it into the international media and now draw visitors from around the world. However, when it comes to the off-thewall celebrations found in Spain, these are just the tip of the iceberg. The following is a selection of Spain’s wildest festivals you can’t afford miss in 2013.

1.) El Cascamorras - According to legend, the Cascamorras festival originated from a feud between two Andalusian towns, Baza and Guadix, over a statue of the Virgin Mary. Baza, the statue’s home, said that if anyone from Guadix could make it to the church without being stained by the locals, they could have the statue. This challenge has since transformed into a yearly celebration with thousands of revellers covered in black grease-paint splatter fellow partygoers and the invading “cascamorras” (buffoon) who comes to take the statue. 2.) Bous a la Mar -- The Bous a la Mar, literally “Bulls to the Sea” festival is held in the second week of July in the small resort town of Denia. The festivities are part of the local patron saint celebrations and involve running bulls from the town square to an impromptu bullring on the coast, where groups of foolhardy locals encourage the charging beast into jumping into the sea. 3.) Nit de Foc -- Every June 24th, the quiet Mallorcan village of

Mancor de la Vall is the backdrop for one of Spain’s most ghoulishly celebrations. During the day, the festival is an affair featuring local costumes, handicrafts, and traditional food. But when the sun sets, fire-wielding folk demons take to the streets for the Nit de Foc -”Night of Fire”, crowds of revellers gather to watch the spectacle, sample local wine, and dance to traditional bagpipe and drum music. 4.) Toro de Fuego - Few traditions are as ingrained in Spanish

culture as bull running but the Toro de Fuego -”Fire Bull” is an unusual twist on a fiesta favourite. The Toro de Fuego is a small, cast-iron bull which is loaded down with industrial-strength sparklers and carried on the shoulders of a local volunteer who proceeds to chase participants through the streets in haze of smoke, fire, and shouts of the locals. 5.) Es Firó - One of Mallorca’s most famous festivals is Es Firó, a celebration of the region’s defence

against Moorish invaders in 1561. Held on the second Monday in May, Es Firó draws thousands of costumed revellers who re-enact the Moorish siege of the island, and top the event off with plenty of wine, songs, and fireworks. 6.) Fiesta de la Mercé - No festival is more popular to the locals of Barcelona than September’s Fiesta de la Mercè. This carnival boasts tons of concerts, children’s activities, exhibits, beach parties, and the famous Festa de Foc -”Fire

Tougher New AntiDoping Law Introduced

The Spanish parliament has passed new measures covering the anti-doping law that will toughen penalties in order to improve Spain’s image as it bids to host the 2020 Olympic Games. The new measure was brought in after a Spanish doctor was convicted in a major blood-doping scandal on public health charges.

Education and Sports minister Jose Ignacio Wert told parliament the law would bring Spain into line with World Anti-Doping Agency requirements. According to a draft of the law, it raises fines for doping to up to 400,000 Euros but stops short of making doping punishable by a prison sentence. It strengthens the role of Spain’s national anti-doping authority and gives inspectors the right to carry out doping tests on sportsmen overnight in certain cases. Wert said the tougher rules are “an indispensable condition” for Madrid’s candidacy for the 2020 summer Olym-

pics and Barcelona’s bid for the winter games in 2022. Passed on by a large majority in the lower house of parliament, the bill must now go to the Senate for approval. It is expected to be definitively adopted by the lower house before the host of the 2020 Olympics is named on September 7. A Madrid court on April 30 sentenced

doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, 57, to a year in prison for endangering public health by performing blood transfusions on top cyclists. The case, dubbed Operation Puerto, was judged on public health charges because doping was not a crime in Spain until 2006. Spain’s current doping law was introduced that year shortly after the Puerto affair erupted.

Party”, where huge dragons are paraded through the streets to the beat of drums, alongside 2 tons of fireworks. 7.) Mare de Deu Festival -From the 7-8th of September, the town of Algemesí, Valencia is host to the Mare de Deu Festival, dating back to 1247, it is one of the oldest and most renowned in the region. Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, the party involves processions, drinking, and dancing, but the most spectacular part is the Muxieranga, festively-dressed teams of daredevils who built multi-story human towers along the parade route. 8.) Festival of Moralzarzal -While Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls is a favourite among visitors, many locals now opt for a smaller, less-touristy festival in the town of Moralzalzar near Madrid. No grand histories or sacred traditions just an authentic, good time of music, food, wine, and, of course, bulls. 9.) A Rapa das Bestas -- One of Spain’s strangest festivals takes place in the small Galician village of Sabuceda in the first week of June. During A Rapa das Bestas, hundreds of wild mustangs are rounded up from the surrounding hills and driven into an arena in the town where their manes are trimmed and their health is checked. The thrill of this party comes from the daring wranglers who dive into the churning mass of wild mustangs to carry out their duties. 10.) Battle of Claret -- One of Spain’s most widely-practiced summer festivities: getting together with friends and family and covering each other with local wine, The Battle of Claret, held the last Sunday in July in the small village of San Asensio, La Rioja is one of the country’s most popular wine battles and draws visitors from all over the country.

Iberia Reports First Loss For 2013

International Airlines Group (IAG), the parent company of British Airways, has reported a net loss of £535m in the three months to March compared with a shortfall of £110m in the same part of last year. The loss for Europe’s third-biggest airline group by market value, was greater than forecast by analysts.

The company blamed restructuring at Iberia in the three months cost it £265m. Chief executive Willie Walsh said: “These results are encouraging with underlying revenue strength in strategic markets. However while the first step towards restructuring Iberia has been taken, there is more work to be done.” IAG has been hit with significant labour issues at

Iberia as it sought to impose a stringent new structure. Mr Walsh confirmed that IAG expects to take delivery of its first two 787 Dreamliners by the end of June. It previously increased its order size to 18, amid the earlier on going battery woes of the hitech Boeing jets. IAG shares in London opened nearly 3% down on news of the quarterly loss.

Brit Fugitive Arrested In Spain

E

xtradition proceeding are now underway after one of Britain’s most wanted fugitives was been arrested in Spain while he was relaxing by a swimming pool with his girlfriend. Armed police officers swooped on Andrew Moran at a luxury villa in the Calpe area of Alicante in a joint operation between UK and Spanish forces. Two handguns, 60 rounds of ammunition and a machete were also recovered during the raid on Friday afternoon.

Officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), NorthWest Regional Organised Crime Unit (also known as Titan) and Spanish National Police, were involved in the raid Moran, 31, had been on the run since 2009 after he assaulted four security guards, jumped over the dock and escaped during his trial at Burnley Crown Court for holding up a Royal Mail vehicle in a £25,000 raid in May 2005, in which a security guard was injured. He was subsequently convicted in his absence of conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Described by police as a “danger-

ous man”, Moran fled to Spain, frequently changing his appearance and used false identities. He was tracked down to the Murcia region in November 2012, but escaped from local officers by ramming two police vehicles with his 4x4 and driving off at speed the wrong way down a motorway. During a search of the house he was living in at the time a handgun, ammunition, 5kg of cannabis, and a vacuum packing machine were recovered. He was the last man outstanding on a law enforcement hit-list of armed robbers from Salford, Greater Manchester. Moran was one of seven men targeted in a crackdown on organised crime in the city. He was also on the most wanted list for Crimestoppers’ Operation Captura campaign, which identifies serious criminals believed to be on the run in Spain, and his arrest means 50 fugitives have now been caught since its launch in 2006. Stephen Devalda, 29, was also involved in the Royal Mail raid outside an Asda store in Colne, Lancashire. He was arrested at a hotel in Marbella, Spain, in March 2011, following an operation involving Soca, Greater Manchester Police and the Spanish authorities, and was jailed at Preston Crown Court for nine years and eight months for con-

spiracy to commit armed robbery and seven months for breaching bail. Detective Chief Inspector Janet Hudson from Titan, said: “My officers have worked tirelessly alongside Soca colleagues and the Spanish authorities to track down this dangerous man. It just goes to show that

we will stop at nothing to capture criminals wherever they are in the world. No matter how hard they try to evade justice they will not succeed.” Matt Burton, head of investigations at Soca, added: “Moran thought he could evade capture fleeing to Spain, frequently chang-

ing his appearance and using false identities. Like his partner in crime Devalda and the other armed robbers on the hit-list discovered though, there’s no hiding place. Soca and its partners have the capability to pursue criminals relentlessly, track them down, and put them behind bars.”

Queen’s Speech: Spain Economic Forum In New York “Surprise & Discomfort” During the State opening of Parliament, the Queen declared that the British Government would protect the Gibraltarians’ and Falkland islanders’ right to selfdetermination.

Representatives of the Spanish government and some of the Iberian nation’s corporate heavyweights visited New York for the Spain Economic Forum, held at the headquarters of Nasdaq.

“The principal challenge of the Spanish economy in this difficult situation is to recover confidence in the capacity to grow in the framework of (European) monetary union,” Jose Luis Malo de Malina, Managing Director for Economics, Statistics and Research at the Banco de España, told around 150 investors and analysts. Spain is emerging from the financing squeeze that pushed the country into a second recession in four years, a slump that is “less severe, but more prolonged,” the central bank economist said. “Fortunately, that dangerous episode has been surmounted (and) the worst has been left behind,” Malo de Molina said, forecasting that Spain’s economy will stabilize by the end

of this year, with a 0.1% drop in GDP for 2013 as a whole. The next speaker was New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who joked about his shaky command of Spanish before touting the Big Apple as the gateway to the United States for firms from Spain. Bloomberg noted that a subsidiary of Spanish construction giant ACS, Dragados USA, won the contract for a commuter rail line linking Queens with Grand Central Station. Executives from Dragados, Telefonica, Indra, Santander, Iberia and Repsol offered perspectives on their industries, while Carlos Espinosa de los Monteros, High Commissioner for Brand Spain, provided a broader view. “Many people don’t recognize the hightechnology possibilities our country offers. We have to change our image of a traditional country to that of a modern one,” said De los Monteros, who was recently in Miami for the 400th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon’s discovery of Florida.

Jose Ignacio Landaluce, the ruling Spanish Popular Party MP and Mayor of Algeciras, said that the Queen’s message of support for Gibraltar (and Falklands) was greeted with “surprise and considerable discomfort” in Spain. His was the only reaction from any Spanish official. The remarks were unprecedented and a clear indication of the British Government’s firm commitment to the people of Gibraltar. Landaluce said that Spain was respectful toward the Queen’s message, but he made no effort to hide the fact that her words had not gone down well in Madrid: “We don’t think it’s a very friendly gesture,” he said. “Gibraltar is a colony and must be returned to its legitimate owners”. He added that Spain remained committed to

dialogue and better understanding between neighbouring communities. “But always taking into account that matters of sovereignty are discussed between two countries,” he underlined and they are Spain and the UK. Earlier this week the Foreign & Commonwealth Office made clear yet again that bilateral talks about Gibraltar were out of the question: “The shared position of the UK Government and HM Government of Gibraltar is that the Trilateral Forum for Dialogue is the only acceptable

formal process for negotiations between UK, Spain and Gibraltar,” a spokesman said. “The UK remains strongly committed to the Trilateral Process”. Spain’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, was in Sevilla participating in a two-day conference on Gibraltar, where he was scheduled to speak. The event took place at the Colegio Mayor San Juan Bosco under the theme ‘Gibraltar, 300 Years After the Treaty of Utrecht’. CM Picardo addressed delegates on the Gibraltar view of the Treaty of Utrecht.

New Nokia Lumia – Just Repackaging?

noKIA has unveiled a lighter, metal model in its Lumia smartphone range, in an attempt to close the huge market lead of rival Samsung in the lucrative handset market. The Lumia 925, to be sold for nearly £400 before taxes and subsidies through carriers including vodafone and China Mobile, is the latest in nokia’s range using Windows Phone software.

It weighs just139g, compared with 185g for the earlier 920 model, and has an enhanced screen which can be read in bright sunlight. Among the 925’s central features are its “smart camera” which is designed to capture 10 images at once to create the “perfect” high quality image. Alongside its enhanced camera, the Lumia 925 features a navigational function and Nokia Music a service which allows unlimited streaming of music playlists. Executive vice president of Nokia’s smart devices, Jo Harlow, said: “The most innovative smartphone in the world did just get

better.” As the phone was being shown off to the world’s media, figures were released showing Nokia has lost almost 5% of global market share in the first quarter. Research company Gartner’s figures showed overall global sales figures for mobile phones rose 0.7% in the first three months of 2013. Samsung remained market leader with 23.6% of sales, ahead of Nokia on 14.8% and Apple on 9%. Nokia held a 19.7% share just a year ago. Industry commentators believe Chief Executive Stephen Elop has pinned the future of the loss-making company on the phone and hopes it will reverse a dramatic drop in revenue over the last two years. But Paul Thompson, managing director of mo-

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly bile advertising company BlisMedia, expressed scepticism that the device would return Nokia to dominance in the market: “If you set this against the design qualities of Apple’s iPhone and even the HTC One, it is slightly underwhelming and will not set it apart from its rivals, it doesn’t even raise the bar any higher,”

he said. “I would expect Nokia to continue to struggle to make an impact in the smartphone markets in the US and UK, especially as it has bet big on the Windows operating system which has failed to get much traction with consumers despite the millions spent on marketing it. The focus on engineering a great camera, sound and video experience in the latest Lumia plays to Nokia’s historical strengths but the eight megapixel camera is less than the 13 megapixels available on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Is this a radical experience or even a fresh experience, not really. More a repacking exercise.” Stuart Miles, founder of technology and gadget site Pocket-lint, said: “Nokia has created a really good-looking phone with some very clever camera features. It’s the phone they should have launched six months ago. The real question however is whether they can convince people to part with the love of their favourite apps to go with the windows phone OS. If they can’t, then Samsung and Apple will retain the upper hand.”

Rescued – 17 Days After Factory Collapse

Rescuers in Bangladesh have found a survivor in the rubble of a clothing factory that collapsed 17 days ago. Reshma was on the second floor of the eight-storey Rana Plaza building in the capital Dhaka, where crews had been focusing on recovering bodies, not rescuing survivors, for much of the past two weeks. Bangladeshi television channels broadcast live footage of

emergency service workers pulling the woman out from the debris, as onlookers burst into cheers.

She was discovered in the wreckage of a Muslim prayer room in the building and army officials immediately ordered the cranes and bulldozers to stop work. Once Reshma finally got their attention, the crews ordered the cranes and bulldozers to immediately stop work and used handsaws and welding and drilling equipment to cut through the iron rod and debris still trapping her.

They gave her water, oxygen and saline as they worked to free her, using handsaws to cut through the rubble, as hundreds of people who had been engaged in the grim job of removing decomposing bodies from the site, raised their hands together in prayer: “Allah, you are the greatest, you can do anything. Please allow us all to rescue the survivor just found,” said a man on a loudspeaker leading the prayers. “We seek apology for our sins. Please pardon us, pardon the person found alive.” “I heard voices of the rescue workers for the past sev-

eral days. I kept hitting the wreckage with sticks and rods just to attract their attention,” she told a TV company from her hospital bed. “No one heard me. It was so bad for me. I never dreamed I’d see the daylight again,” she said. “There was some dried food around me. I ate the dried food for 15 days. The last two days I had nothing but water. I used to drink only a limited quantity of water to save it. I had some bottles of water around me,” she said. Abdur Razzak, a warrant officer with the military’s engineering department who first spotted her in the

Evacuated – Homes Disappearing Into Hillside

Families have been forced out of their homes after they started disappearing into a hillside. Eight homes have been abandoned and 10 more are under notice of imminent evacuation in Lake County, about 100 miles (160km) north of San Francisco.

Owners first noticed cracks in the walls and had difficulty closing doors before the 30-year-old houses started collapsing in on themselves. The land in northern California is now so unstable that heavy machinery cannot move in to carry out demolition work; postal deliveries to remaining

houses have been stopped to protect postal workers. Scott Spivey first noticed damage to his home in March: “Doors started to not shut. Cracks in the wall started appearing. The garage door was coming off its hinges. And there were some huge cracks in the floor that we were noticing; we could feel them even underneath the carpet. It’s very painful to see your house like this, especially in this condition, especially after all the years of putting in hard work into trying to make this a really nice place. Doing remodelling and upgrades to appliances and to the rest of the stuff in the house. And it just seems like all the work that I put into it is just gone.”

Unlike sinkholes of Florida that can destroy homes in an instant, this collapse in hilly volcanic country can move by metres one day and a centimetre the next. Officials believe water that has bubbled to the surface is playing a role in the destruction. But nobody can explain how there is suddenly so much water on the hill in a county with groundwater shortages. Lake County spokesman Kevin Ingram said: “Because of development on steep slopes we do see slides from time to time, but they’re always associated with storm events or something like this. This is really unusual and we haven’t seen anything like it.”

Some of the world’s largest international clothes retailers have signed up to an accord intended to protect manufacturing workers in Bangladesh following riots over conditions in the industrial Ashulia district of Dhaka.

The agreement includes strengthening workers’ rights, training and brands making a financial commitment relative to the size of their business in Bangladesh Primark and H&M are the latest signatories to the Bangladesh Fire and Safety Act, a legally-binding agreement which it is hoped will improve safety conditions for workers in the country’s garment and textiles factories. Other signatories include the Inditex Group - which operates Zara, Massimo Dutti and Pull & Bear - Calvin Klein owner PVH, Tommy Hilfiger, C&A and Tesco. The programme will complement the work already being carried out by Primark’s Ethical Trade team in Bang-

ladesh for a number of years. A spokesman said: “Primark is very pleased to support this initiative. The company has consistently believed that the collaborative approach facilitated through this agreement was the most likely initiative to bring effective and sustainable change for the better to the Bangladeshi garment industry On Sunday, thousands of workers took to the streets of the city in a protest over conditions and vandalised shops and cars before being dispersed by police. As many as 300 factories in Ashulia were closed for the day and 80% of workers staged a walkout demanding a pay increase, local police chief Badrul Ala told reporters. “This agreement is exactly what is needed to finally bring an end to the epidemic of fire and building disasters that have taken so many lives in the garment industry in Bangladesh,’’ the executive director of the Worker Rights Consortium, Scott Nova, said.

wreckage, said she was in a remarkably good condition and could even walk: “She was fine, no injuries. She was just trapped. The space was wide.” Reshma told her rescuers there were no more survivors in her area. Workers began tearing through the nearby rubble anyway, hoping to find another person alive. More than 2,500 people have been rescued in the immediate aftermath of the

collapse. However, the death toll has now risen to more than 1,000. The collapse is already the world’s deadliest garment industry disaster and one of the worst industrial accidents. The disaster has raised alarm about the often deadly working conditions in Bangladesh’s £13bn garment industry, which provides clothing for major retailers around the globe.

The Lake County Board of Supervisors has asked Governor Jerry Brown to declare an emergency so funding might be available to stabilise utilities and determine the cause of the collapse. The California Emergency Management Agency has said Brown is still assessing the situation.

scar-winning actress Angelina Jolie was found to have a faulty gene which sharply increases the chance of her developing breast and ovarian cancer. The American actress has written an article in the New York Times about her decision to have a double mastectomy. Jolie, who lives with Hollywood star Brad Pitt, says that her mother fought cancer for 10 years before her death: “My doctors estimated that I had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman. Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65% risk of getting it, on average. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.” Jolie, 37, who has six children three by Pitt and three adopted -, continued: “On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work. But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.” Jolie reveals she had the first of three procedures on February 2. The major surgery “where the breast tissue is removed and temporary fillers are put in place” was carried out two weeks later. Nine weeks later she had breast implants. “There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be beautiful,” she writes. She adds: “I wanted to write this to tell other women that

the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made. My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87% to under 5%. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.” In the article, titled My Medical Choice, the star reveals that Pitt was by her side “for every minute” of all three procedures: I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive,” she writes. “So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition. Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center where I was treated, for every

minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.” Jolie, one of the world’s highest paid performers, says the cost of getting tested for BRCA1 and another faulty gene, called BRCA2, was nearly £2,000 and that this “remains an obstacle for many women”. NHS guidelines in the UK recommend that anyone who is at ‘high risk’ of developing breast cancer at some point in their life be gene tested. The risk level is dependent on close blood relatives - from one side of a family - having breast cancer. Factors that may increase risk, ac-

cording to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines, include a family member being diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age or having cancer in both breasts, having a male relative with breast cancer and if there is also ovarian cancer in the family. Jolie, daughter of Hollywood luminary Jon Voight, has appeared in dozens of films including 2010’s The Tourist and Salt, the Tomb Raider films, and 1999’s Girl, Interrupted, for which she won an Academy Award. But she has appeared more often in the news in recent years for her power coupling with Pitt and her charitable work with refugees as a United Nations ambassador.

• In the UK, women at risk of having a faulty gene linked to breast cancer are offered tests and screening on the NHS. • Everyone has the genes linked with breast cancer - called BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53 or PTEN - but if there is a fault or mutation in one of them, the risk of breast cancer is high. • These faulty genes also increase the risk of ovarian cancer. • Having a fault in one of the breast cancer genes raises the risk of developing breast cancer in a woman’s lifetime from 10% to between 50% and 85%. • A blood test can identify whether someone has a fault in one of these high-risk genes. • Women are offered testing if they are deemed at risk of having a faulty gene. This can include close blood relatives of women with a faulty gene, and women with a strong family history of breast cancer. • Young-onset of breast cancer in a family member, cancer in both breasts and breast cancer in a male relative are all factors that increase a woman’s risk. • If a woman who has not got cancer is found to have a faulty gene she has various options. • Depending on her age and estimated risk she will be offered mammograms and/ or MRI scans and a good diet and regular exercise will help reduce the risk. • But the risk is unlikely to go below 50% so another option is surgery - removal of the breasts (mastectomy) and sometimes removal of the ovaries (oophorectomy). • If a woman has a double mastectomy her risk of developing breast cancer is reduced by 90 - 95%. • The NHS advises women worried about their risk because two or three women in their family have had breast cancer to go to their GP, who, if necessary, will refer them to a relevant clinic.

Hadfield In Bowie Space Tribute

On the eve of his return to Earth after nearly five months on board the International Space Station, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield recorded his own version of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. Commander Hadfield, who has been described by Twitter followers as the “coolest guy in outer space”, posted a five-minute clip on YouTube in which he performed the 1969 classic. It shows the 53-year-old singing surprisingly well and strumming his guitar while floating in the cabin of the space station.

Produced with the help of staff at the Canadian Space Agency, the cover features a piano intro and modified lyrics that reference the Soyuz capsule that is due to return Hadfield to

Kazakhstan today. Cmdr Hadfield starts singing: “Ground control to Major Tom ... Ground control to Major Tom ... Lock your Soyuz hatch and put your helmet on.” When he gets to the words “and I’m floating in a most peculiar way” he can be seen floating in mid-air in zero gravity while breath taking views of Earth are visible from the space station’s windows. Cmdr Hadfield, who already has a dedicated Twitter following of more than 770,000, has attracted global adoration for his musical stint, as well as praise from Bowie himself, who tweeted “Hallo Spaceboy”. Cmdr Hadfield became the first Canadian to command the ISS in March. He is handing the reins of the expedition to fellow astronaut Pavel Vinogradov of Russia. During his time on the mission, Hadfield and his team had to make a rare, hastily planned spacewalk to fix a serious ammonia leak. At the time, Cmdr Hadfield tweeted from inside: “Gloved fingers crossed”.

Half an hour later he wrote: “No leaks!” After a six-month space mission that turned him into a global celebrity, Hadfield says he is “happily readapting to the heavy pull of gravity” The Canadian tweeted shortly after returning to Earth following his stay on board the International Space Station (ISS). He touched down alongside American Tom Marshburn and Russian Roman Romanenko on the steppes of Kazakhstan at 8:31am local

time on Tuesday as planned: “Safely home,” he wrote, adding it was “wonderful to smell and feel spring”. TV pictures showed the Soyuz TMA-07M capsule slowly descending by parachute before landing southeast of the town of Dzhezkazgan. A three-man US-Russian crew left behind on the space station will be joined in two weeks by the next trio of astronauts.

Lives of the First World THROWN OFF PLANE FOR War – Online Tribute SINGING T WHITNEY he Imperial War Museum is leading a massive project which will pay tribute to more than eight million men and women who served during the first World War, to those who served in uniform, as well as people who worked on the home front, their stories will be told online.

Lives of the First World War will collate records from museums, libraries, archives and family collections from across the globe. It is aiming to set up a digital legacy where people can connect, explore, and share information about British and Commonwealth citizens involved in the war. The public is being asked to help by submitting stories, photos and information about family members. The National Archives and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission are two

of the organisations supplying information to the project. The site will be available for submissions throughout the four-year centenary, which begins next year. Diane Lees, directorgeneral of The Imperial War Museum, said it was important that future generations “understand the causes and consequences

of the war and to remember the men and women who played their role. Now that the First World War is outside living memory, we are the voice of those veterans and the custodians of their stories - which we can now tell through Lives of the First World War. We will be encouraging people of all ages, in all communities, to

join us in this project to actively remember these men and women.” The First World War claimed the lives of more than 16 million people. Lives of the First World War, a joint project between the Imperial War Museum and online publisher Brightsolid, is scheduled to go live at the end of 2013.

The flight was meant to fly non-stop to JFK in New York, but the pilot made the unscheduled stop two and half hours into the journey at Kansas City International Airport. Airport spokesman Joe McBride said: “The woman was being disruptive and was removed from the plane for interfering with the flight crew. There was a federal air marshal on the aircraft, who subdued the woman and put her in cuffs and removed her from the plane.” The ejected woman won little praise for her singing from fellow passengers, who had endured a long delay in Kansas and arrived late in New York. The woman, who claimed she was a diabetic, was released without charge, but told she would have to sort out her own onward journey.

Izzard The Politician

Comedian Eddie Izzard has said he is prepared to put up with the backlash for wanting to pursue a career in politics. The 51-year-old is seeking the Labour nomination for mayor of London in 2019, and if he does not get the endorsement he hopes to stand as an MP.

Speaking about the launch of his political career, Izzard said: “People say ‘Well, you’re a bit woolly’ and ‘you’re really not informed’; ‘You’re not this’ and ‘you’re not that’. But I realise those attacks are going to happen and you have to push through to get to a better place.” Izzard, who previously campaigned for Ken Livingstone to be mayor, criticised current London Mayor Boris Johnson, saying: “Boris is really all about Boris.” The funny man added: “You know, the whole Boris bike thing is crazy. It was Ken’s idea, he saw cycles for hire in France and wanted to set it up, but no-one seems

to mention that. It’s ‘Ken cycles’ not “Boris bikes’.” Izzard, who completed 43 marathons in 51 days to raise money for Sport Relief in 2009, said in an interview: “I hated the 80s and I hated the politics and I really didn’t like Baroness Thatcher. I’m all for get-up-and-go and she did have energy, but throwing people on the scrapheap of life is what she did, and she seemed to revel in it as well. People have to have a heart. She was endlessly good friends with Pinochet, who we know was a murderer and a torturer. And she said Nelson Mandela was part of a terrorist organisation

and that if the ANC think they’re going to be running the country, they are in cloud cuckoo-land. That sums up Margaret Thatcher for me.” Next year, Izzard will return to South Africa to complete his latest running challenge, a tribute to Mandela, after the star had to pull out last year because of health complications. Izzard attempted 27 marathons in 27 days to mark the 27 years Mandela spent in prison, but retired after the fourth event: “I’m not stopping until at some point I do achieve 27 marathons in 27 days. I know I can do it,” he said.

Guilty – Justice For Tia Stuart Hazell has been jailed for a minimum of 38 years after receiving a life sentence for murdering schoolgirl Tia Sharp. The 37-year-old had originally denied killing the youngster and hiding her body in the loft of the home he shared with her grandmother.

As a result, he forced 12-year-old Tia’s family to sit through days of shocking and graphic evidence at the Old Bailey before eventually changing his plea to guilty in a dramatic turn of events. Passing sentence, judge Mr Justice Nicol told Hazell: “Tia was a sparky girl who was full of life but you took that life from her. All that lay ahead of her - a career, loves and family of her own - will now

never be. And the loss of her has been devastating for her mother, her father and all her relatives and friends. The tragedy of their loss and her death is because of your act in murdering Tia Sharp. You are responsible.” Cries of “yes” could be heard from Tia’s family as Hazell was taken down from the dock. Earlier, he sat forward in his seat and stared intently; as the judge told him there

was “no doubt” he had developed a sexual interest in Tia, referring to a picture of Tia, believed to have been taken after her death, which he said “further degraded that young girl”. The judge said there was “no pathological evidence” she had been sexually assaulted, although “it cannot be discounted”. He continued: “I cannot say for certain that there was a sexual motive for the killing, it is not a case

Fined – Skechers Fake Claims S

hoe manufacturer Skechers will have to shell out $40m (£26.13m) to people who bought its Shape-Up trainers after adverts made unfounded claims they would help weight loss and strengthen muscles. US district judge Thomas B Russell approved the class action settlement, meaning more than 520,000 customers will now be able to claim back the price of the toning shoes.

A pair of Shape-Ups, endorsed by reality star Kim Kardashian, or Resistance Runners, which were both covered by the settlement, are priced at around $80. Two other styles bought by claimants, Podded Sole Shoes and Tone-Ups, cost between $40 and $54. Skechers billed its Shape-Ups as a fitness tool, saying the shoe’s curved “rocker” or rolling bottom provided natural instability and causes the consumer to “use more energy with every step”. Resistance Runners were claimed to increase “muscle activation” by up to 85% for posture-related muscles and 71% for one of the muscles in the buttocks. “Skechers’ unfounded claims went beyond where a whole life tariff can be imposed.” Mr Justice Nicol said there were a number of other “notable and serious” aggravating factors in the case. They included Tia’s age, the “gross breach of trust” by Hazell and the concealment of her body, which was found wrapped in bin bags and a sheet in New Addington, south London, last August. The judge said Hazell would be given only “the most modest of credit” for changing his plea to guilty on the fifth day of his trial: “Your counsel says that you wished to avoid causing further distress to Tia’s family. That is very commendable, but they have had to endure four days of a very public trial. It was necessary for the prosecution to lay out for the jury your sexual interest in Tia and for the jury to see the photograph of Tia naked. Your plea of guilty has spared the family none of that. It may be the first act of remorse, as your counsel says, but because it comes so late I am afraid it will earn you only the most modest of

stronger and more toned muscles,” said David Vladeck, of the Federal Trade Commission, a body responsible for protecting consumers’ interests, “The Company even made claims about weight loss and cardiovascular health. The FTC’s message, for Skechers and other national advertisers, is to shape up your substantiation or tone down your claims.” California-based Skechers denied misleading customers but said it settled to avoid a long litigation process. As usual, lawyers stand to do rather better than consumers they represented after the judge awarded them $5m (£3m) in fees from the case.

credit.” Tia’s family left court without speaking to the crowd of reporters who had gathered outside, although some of her relatives could be heard shouting “Nowhere near long enough” and “RIP Tia”. Witness statements described the torment her parents endured after learning Hazell had killed their daughter. Her mother, Natalie Sharp, said she has “so many questions” for Hazell, adding: “Sometimes I feel pity. Sometimes I want to hurt him.”

Tia’s father, Steven Carter, said Hazell should be hanged. “In my opinion (a prison sentence) will not be enough,” he told reporters outside court. Detective Chief Inspector Nick Scola, of the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said he was “very pleased” with the sentence: “A minimum of 38 years is satisfying for both the investigating team and Tia’s friends and family,” he said. “Hazell will have a very long time in prison to think about what he has done.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com A new NHS guide is recommending that expectant mothers should take breath tests to prove if they are smoking or not during their pregnancy. An estimated 20% of women smoke while they are pregnant, which is believed to lead to a low birth weight for their babies and cause complications in pregnancy and labour.

In a bid to lower the numbers, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) has said women should be tested for carbon monoxide found in cigarettes during antenatal appointments, and given help to quit if levels are too high. The proposals have been backed by midwives. Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the Royal College of Midwives said the tests would be very helpful “in showing to women the potential damage that smoking can have on their baby”. But she also warned that “any test which becomes routine must be offered along with

Tenerife Weekly - 17th May - 23rd May 2013 comprehensive information and women must be able to opt out: ”We would like (Nice) to make clear in any advice to women that midwives should offer the test but that ultimately the final decision must lie with the woman.” But the new tests have also been met with opposition, with parenting groups saying future mothers should not be dictated to in such a way. There is also concern the tests could damage the relationship between expectant women and the professionals giving them antenatal support. Mrs Warwick added that the NHS has too few midwives: “The real solution here in cutting the prevalence of smoking in pregnancy is more midwives and more continuity of care from the same midwife. The shortage of midwives, particularly in England, means that often a midwife does not have as much time as she would want with each pregnant woman in her care and that women often see a different midwife at each visit,” she said. The new Nice guidelines, currently under consultation, are due to be published later this year.

Warrior Games New Recruit

After helping them to victory against the USA in a sitting volleyball match, Prince Harry found himself being jumped on by British competitors at the Warrior Games. The third in line to the throne came on as a replacement in the second set of the exhibition match to the cheers of 400 spectators. Harry, who earlier opened the fourth Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, lined up alongside injured service personnel including double amputees.

With sitting volleyball a great leveller, the Apache helicopter pilot struggled to compete alongside those who have spent month preparing for the games. But Captain Harry Wales wasn’t about to let his team mates down and smashed a few winners on behalf of Team GB. Prince Harry had earlier joined US Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin and Paralympic swimmer Brad Snyder to light the Warrior Games flame in front of more 300 competitors. It follows comments made by the 28-year-old Prince at a brunch for Warrior Games officials about his deployment in Afghanistan: “No matter

25

the detail, or the accent, I witnessed at first hand the bravery of our troops. Not only confronting dangers on the battlefield, but also its tragic consequences, life-changing wounds, and the death of friends. The courage is clear and obvious, from moment of injury, through the countless hours of intensive rehab.” The Warrior Games begin in earnest on Monday when Prince Harry started one of the cycle road races. Harry is also expected to get involved in an American football demonstration, before heading to New Jersey, New York and Connecticut for the final stages of his week-long US tour.

Insects are a virtually “untapped” source of food for people, livestock and pets, according to the United Nations. Two billion people already supplement their diets with creepycrawlies and insect farming could be one way to address food security. According to a 200-page report, Edible Insects, many of the creatures are high in protein, good fats and minerals, and suggests that largescale mechanisation of “insect farming” would also bring environmental benefits.

Insects are “extremely efficient”, needing only 2kg of feed to produce 1kg of tasty insect mass, according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). In comparison, cattle need 8kg of feed to produce 1kg of meat. Another advantage over their bovine friends is the amount of “emissions” produced: “Insects produce a fraction of emissions such as methane, ammonia, climate-warming greenhouse gases and manure, all of which contaminate the environment,” said the FAO. “We are not saying that people should be eating bugs,” said the organisation’s Eva Muller. We are saying

that insects are just one resource provided by forests, and insects are pretty much untapped for their potential for food, and especially for feed.” New laws and food safety standards would be needed to encourage increased insect snacking in developed countries, the FAO said. However, it added that attitudes appeared to be changing with more “novel food stores and restaurants cropping up in developed countries”. Celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal has been known to cook with insects

and in 2010 produced an “edible garden” for one of his television shows. More than 1,900 insect species are consumed by humans worldwide, mostly in parts of Asia and Africa. The most consumed insects are: beetles (31%); caterpillars (18%); bees, wasps and ants (14%); and grasshoppers, locusts and crickets (13%). The agency noted that its Edible Insect Programme is also examining the potential of arachnids, such as spiders and scorpions, even though they are not strictly speaking insects.

Ice Floe Destroys Homes In US & Canada

A nIne-MeTre high wall of creeping ice from a lake destroyed 12 homes and damaged another 15 in Canada - as footage emerged of a similar, but less severe, event at a uS home.

A state of emergency was declared in the community of Ochre Beach in Manitoba, Canada, after strong winds up to 55mph pushed massive ice floes from Dauphin Lake onto nearby properties. No one was injured but homes near the beach were evacuated. Doug David said he heard it coming and, within five minutes, a wall of ice rose from the lake so powerful that it ploughed through his two-storey home, pushing furniture from one bedroom into another, with the bath being moved into the hallway. One official, Clayton Watts, said: “The whole thing happened in about

10 minutes. We had people barbecuing on their decks. They turned around to go inside to get something, they came back out and their decks were ripping apart. It was like a freight train coming through, they say.” Residents and volunteers were allowed to return to the area and have been digging the ice from homes that were declared structurally stable. In the US, people living around Lake Mille Lacs in Minnesota watched in disbelief as ice crawled into doors and windows at Izatyz Resort. Winds of up to 40mph had pushed the wall of ice towards homes along the shore. Darla Johnson, who filmed the event, said: “You could hear it right through the doors, that’s what alerted us to all of it. And we turned around and you could just see it. It’s creepy because it starts coming towards you and you’re like ‘What is

that!’” Authorities have been using heavy equipment to move the ice. The phenomenon follows several weeks of unusual weather conditions in the US, which have seen late snowfall and cold winds during an unusually late spring.

A

merica’s Cup bosses have promised a full investigation into the accident which killed Olympic gold medallist Andrew Simpson, who died after his yacht capsized in San Francisco Bay during training for the America’s Cup.

Simpson had been sailing Sweden’s entry in the upcoming race, Artemis, the catamaran turned over near Treasure Island and he was trapped underneath for about 10 minutes. Attempts were made to revive the 36-year-old both in the water and on shore, but he was unable to be saved. The probe into the cause of the tragedy is in its early stages, however, there are suggestions that the catamaran had been in and out of a workshop with problems on its body work. According to reports one of the things that they might be looking at is whether the actual fabric of the catamaran played a part in this. There are also reports that after the crash the main beam of the catamaran had split, the beam that joins the front and the back. However, as yet, there’s no clear cause as to why this happened. Artemis Racing said: “It is with immense sadness that Artemis Racing confirms the tragic death of crew member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson in San Francisco.” The team’s chief executive Paul Cayard added: “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened. Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.” Simpson, who served as the Swedish team’s strategist, was one of 11 members of crew on board the 72ft catamaran. He was sailing alongside his childhood friend and Olympic partner Iain Percy, who is the sailing team’s director and tactician. Simpson had won two Olympic medals, including a gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and silver in last year’s Games in London, both in the Star class. He was awarded an MBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list. Tributes have poured in from the world of sailing and beyond. A statement from Sir Ben Ainslie’s Oracle Team read: “Today is a sad day for all of us in the sailing community. Andrew Simpson was a great person, a terrific sailor, and a good friend to all of our team. Our thoughts are with his family and the entire Artemis team. He will be dearly missed.” The British Olympic Association paid tribute today to a “treasured and accomplished member of Team GB”. Olympic silver medallist windsurfer Nick Dempsey tweeted: “Going to miss you Bart”, while Luke Patience, who took silver in the men’s 470 class at London 2012, wrote: “Devastated. Bart, you are a true inspiration.” Simon Shaw, sailing double world match racing champion, added: “Today we lost a courageous sailor. A true friend from school, till now, my heart is with his family.” Former British track cyclist Sir Chris Hoy tweeted: “Shocked to hear of the death of Andrew Simpson, Olympic Champ sailor. thoughts are with his family.” The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and British Sailing Team said they were “devastated” by the news. John Derbyshire, RYA’s performance director, said: “Andrew is someone I’ve worked closely with since the age of 16 - he was a great talent and a key figure in our World Class Programme over many years culminating in his well-deserved Olympic success. He was a huge inspiration to others; both within the British Sailing Team and across the nation and our deepest sympathies go out to his family at this terrible time.” In a statement the America’s Cup said: “Andrew was an immensely popular and respected member of the sailing community, and his two Olympic medals were testament to his talent. His easy-going personality made him loved by many; always friendly, always smiling and always supportive of others.” The US Sailing Team tweeted its shock and sadness at the news, saying: “A tremendously sad day for the sport of sailing. Our thoughts are with the family of Olympic Champion Andrew Simpson, and Artemis Racing.” The British Sonar Team tweeted: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bart’s family and team, a true sailing legend.” Double gold medal winning Olympic rower James Cracknell tweeted:

“Tragic, Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson’s death in San Fran. Reminder no situation totally safe/controlled. No words enough for Leah & Freddie.” Sports Minister Hugh Robertson said: “Andrew Simpson’s death is a huge loss to sailing, the Olympic movement and British sport. I got to know him a little as he prepared for London 2012 and as well as being a talented sailor, was one of the nicest and most genuine people you could wish to meet. My thoughts and sympathies are with his family and friends.” The Artemis is a specially built catamaran that can reach speeds of 45mph (72kph), but she is not the first America’s Cup boat to capsize on San Francisco Bay. In October last year, the Oracle Racing team’s catamaran capsized in 25 knot winds and strong tides swept it four miles past the Golden Gate Bridge. Sailing commentator Alec Wilkinson said: “The very first AC72 that went out on the water with the defenders of the America’s Cup, the Oracle team got a manoeuvre wrong, the bow pitched into the water and over they went in a cartwheel-type movement. The designers have been working on these boats for a couple of years but the actual training time has only been since about January so everybody is very inexperienced on these boats and no one really knows how far you can push them yet.”

Person To Person Virus Warning

Health officials have said a deadly virus which has so far killed 18 people worldwide appears to be able to spread from person-to-person. There have been 33 reported cases of the Sars-like novel coronavirus, known as hCoV-EMC, which causes severe pneumonia in victims and sometimes kidney failure. It is most closely related to a bat virus and scientists are investigating whether bats, camels or goats are a possible source of infection. The virus was first detected in mid-2012, with most of those infected identified as having travelled to Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan or Pakistan. The UK has had four cases, two of whom died. France has confirmed a second case of the virus, with a hospital roommate of a 65-year-old man who initially contracted the virus testing positive for the illness. The second patient’s condition has deteriorated and he is now in intensive care at a hospital near Lille, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said. The outbreak of Severe Acute

Respiratory Syndrome (Sars) killed 775 people after originating in Asia in 2003. Keiji Fukuda, Assistant Director-General at the World Heath Organisation (WHO), said it now appears likely the virus could be passed through close contact between people. But he said there was no evidence it was able to sustain “generalised transmission in communities” - a scenario that would raise the spectre of a pandemic. A statement from the WHO added: “Of most concern, however, is the fact that the different clusters seen in multiple countries increasingly support the hypothesis that when there is close contact this novel coronavirus can transmit from person-to-person.”

BAFTA’S 2013

The British Academy of film and Television Arts (BAfTA) supports promotes and develops the art forms of the moving image - film, television and video games - by identifying and rewarding excellence, inspiring practitioners and benefiting the public.

As the leading charity in the UK supporting the art forms of the moving image, BAFTA ensures that the very best creative work can be accessed and appreciated by the public. As usual, this year’s event included some sensational red carpet fashion moments, some tears and a few surprises. Graham Norton hosted the event, which is formally known as the Arqiva British Academy Television Awards, at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Olivia Colman won two Bafta awards for two different roles, while Ben Whishaw was named

best leading actor for Richard II. Sheridan Smith who was nominated for the first time this year, won in the leading actress category for her role as Charmian Biggs, the wife of Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs in Mrs Biggs. As she tearfully collected her award she said: “Is this a wind-up? Is this for real?” The sitcom award went to Olympic satire Twenty Twelve, while Steve Coogan received the award for best male performance in a comedy. The Radio Times Audience Award, which was voted for by viewers, went to Sky Atlantic HD’s fantasy series Game Of Thrones, and the award for sport and live event was won by Channel 4’s coverage of the 2012 Paralympics. Colman won the supporting actress award for her role as the mother of a murdered son in Accused and picked up her second Bafta for female in a comedy for her role in Twenty Twelve. She beat three other actresses including

her Twenty Twelve co-star Jessica Hynes to the award, saying: “I’m not even the funniest one in our own programme.” Speaking backstage, Colman said she was “thinking there has been a mistake” after winning her second award. But she added that Hollywood had not come calling, but said she would be happy to go if it did, adding: “Of course, it’s warm and I think they pay better.” Monty Python star Terry Jones presented co-star Michael Palin with a Bafta Fellowship. Accepting his award to a standing ovation, Palin said his first celebrity invite had been to open some public toilets in Lambeth - and it had been “quite a journey” from there to the Royal Festival Hall. He said his award was for “thoroughly enjoying myself for the last 48 years and I feel slightly guilty about that”. Clare Balding was presented with a special award in recognition of her presenting roles at the London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012.

Tyson Turn Detective

A DeMoLITIon team have been left embarrassed after a 4,000-ton building was left leaning to one side instead of toppling down as planned. The experts had set off 100kg of explosives in a controlled explosion but they were not enough to destroy the silo in redbank, southwest of Brisbane.

For around 40 minutes, the structure resembled the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy as it stood at an angle. In the end, an excavator had to be brought in to push the building the rest of the way over. The half-century-old silo - once a barley storage facility for a beer brewer - was soon reduced to rubble.

T

he former undisputed boxing champion, Mike Tyson, is being turned into a cartoon detective with a foul-mouthed pigeon as his sidekick. The 46-year-old will voice the animated character, who is armed with a magical facial tattoo, and will also make live action appearances. Mike Tyson Mysteries is scheduled to go out on the Adult Swim network next season.

“With a magical tattoo on his face and a trusty associate by his side - a talking pigeon - if you have a problem that needs solving, Iron Mike is in your corner,” the network said in a statement. Tyson is known for being a pigeonfancier in real life and has called them his “escape”. The weekly 15-minute show will be made by Warner Brothers Animation. But it is not the first time Tyson’s character has been used in an animated series. He is also said to be the inspiration for The Simpsons character Drederick Tatum - a high-pitched, lisping ex-boxer who has

appeared in several episodes. Since his exit from the ring, Tyson, 46, has had bit parts in several films and TV shows during his retirement. He appeared in hit comedy The Hangover, boxing movie Rocky Balboa, as well as television series How I Met Your Mother. Tyson was the youngest person ever to be heavyweight champion when he won the title at age 20. He went on to hold all versions of the title but his career was plagued by controversy. He was jailed for rape in 1992 and infamously bit off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a 1997 championship fight.

Justin gets a dustin’!!!

SeeMS like musical marmite (you love him or reALLy hate him) Justin Beiber is in the news for all the wrong reasons again!!

Beiber was attacked during a concert in Dubai and was forced to flee the stage as security guards tackled the assailant. The assault occurred towards the end of the show whilst Justin was playing the piano, which he managed to overturn. So, what was the man’s beef with Lil Justy? I of course have some theories! Maybe he was jealous of JB’s piano skills and it was a simple case of “pianist envy”(sorry),or more likely

he’d heard that the encore was going to be “Baby” -a song that the chorus sounds like a special needs class visit to a maternity ward “babybaby-baby ooooh”! Or -and this is a long shot, SkyNet has done us all a favour and sent a Terminator from the future to prevent any more crimes against music!! Beiber also courted controversy this week by showing up 2 hours late for a concert again (has anyone checked its batteries lately?) and for saying Anne Frank would have been a fan?!?! Seriously Justin, if she’d known you were out there she would have probably boarded that attic up from the inside and never come out!!!

In related news, Beiber’s alleged assault on a neighbour or “spitgate”, has been presented as a case for the district attorney which, if found guilty of battery, he could face a fine of 1,000 Euros and up to 6 months in jail. However a criminal defence expert stated “nobody gets that much time” and that it would be more likely that he’d face community service and anger management classes.

Mcelderry vs Beyonce!

IT’S seems like an awfully long time since toothsome geordie chappy Joe Mcelderry belted out “Don’t Let the Sun go Down on Me” with musical legend george Michael during the final of The xfactor 2009 and let’s face it, he’s hardly set the charts on fire since he won the competition, but last week “The Climb” singer got the opportunity to duet with another musical megastar!!

Joe was at the MEN arena at Manchester to see the incredible Beyonce in concert when the soul diva flew off the main stage

and landed on a smaller stage, right in front of Joe. As the intro to her hit “Love on Top” began she gave the front row a chance to sing along and on hearing Joe’s impressive vocals was stunned, mouth agape at his talent; “you can really sing!” she shouted, crouching down and giving the mic to Mcelderry so he could really show what he could do! “You sound beautiful” she continued, completely oblivious as to whom the mystery singer was!! Joe looked fit to burst with joy and later tweeted; “So I HAVE ACTUALLY JUST SANG WITH BEYONCE! I can die a happy man now!” Aww Bless!

Everybody loves Catharine Tate!

IT’S been 8 years since the original series finished and it was never massive this side of the Atlantic, but never the less, the BBC have announced that they are filming a pilot for “The Smiths”- a uK set remake of the long running uS sitcom “everybody Loves raymond”.

For anyone that doesn’t know or remember the series, it’s the story of Raymond, a successful sports writer, who lives with his stressed out wife and children-opposite his domineering and interfering mother, grumpy father and still lives with his parents, jealous

brother. The remake, starring stand-up comedian Lee Mack as the main lead (now named Lee) and comedy actress and ex Doctor Who companion Catharine Tate as his wife, will swap the original New Jersey, New York State location for the town of Cheshire, North West England. The original was hugely successful in the states during its 9 year run (1996-2005), making it’s titular star, producer and co-creator, Ray Romano the highest ever paid TV star at the time, commanding 1.5 million dollars per episode!! The original series seems quite dated these days - hope Mack and Tate aren’t expecting pay-packets that thick cos I’ve a feeling that they may be disappointed! The BBC will shoot the pilot this month and plan to have a full series ready by next year.

Just For Fun!!!

“We’re putting the band back together”.

At the bar the other night I walked in on my good friends Bezzi and Mackie discussing a quiz question “who’s backing band was called The Wailers?” I pride myself on having quite an extensive musical knowledge but although I knew the answer, the name escaped me for about thirty seconds! In one of the two attacks, £26m was raided from cashpoints across 24 countries in just over 10 hours, through a total of 36,000 transactions. US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York Loretta Lynch described the theft as “a massive 21stcentury bank heist”. She told a news conference: “In the place of guns and masks, this cybercrime organisation used laptops and the internet. Moving as swiftly as data over the internet, the organisation worked its way from the computer systems of international corporations to the streets of New York City.” According to the US Justice Department, the gang broke into the computers of two credit card processors, one in India in December 2012 and the other in the United States in February of this year. The companies have not been identified.

The hackers increased the available balance and withdrawal limits on prepaid MasterCard debit cards issued by Bank of Muscat of Oman, and National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah PSC (RAKBANK) of the United Arab Emirates. They then distributed counterfeit debit cards to “cashers” around the world, enabling them to siphon millions of dollars from ATMs in a matter of hours. In New York, for example, members of the cell spread out into the city on February 19, armed with cards bearing a single Bank of Muscat account number. Just ten hours later, they had completed 2,904 withdrawals for £1.5m in total, the final transaction coming at around 1.26am. Casher crews were doing the same in other countries, extracting some £26m from Bank of Muscat to add to the £3m they stole from RAKBANK in December.

Prosecutors highlighted the sophistication and “surgical precision” of the hackers, accusing eight men of allegedly forming the New Yorkbased cell of the organisation and said seven of them had been arrested. They included Elvis Rafael Rodriguez, 24, who was pictured in photographic evidence seized on his iPhone, along with Emir Yasser Yeje, 24. The pair are pictured posing with a large pile of money, allegedly just after withdrawing it. Other images show more wads of cash and luxury goods. An eighth man, allegedly a leader of the cell, was reported to have been murdered in the Dominican Republic on April 27. Officials in Washington say the ringleaders are believed to be outside the US, but refused to give more details due to the on-going investigation.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Hurry Up Harry The Cost Of A Shirt

I see that Prince Harry is being hailed as a good boy again. That must surely mean that he will be slated by the press in a couple of weeks for having his nipple sucked by a lady of the night in an abattoir in harrow. He seems to get it so right most of the time and then he just seems to make a stupid blunder.

I have said before, I like the guy. He is real. He isn’t a plastic cardboard royal cut-out. He has fun and he sounds sincere. I wish that more members of the royal family would speak from the heart instead of reading or sounding like they are reading something

The disaster in Bangladesh at the clothes factory that collapsed is an absolute disgrace. It is a disgrace to the owners and management for not heeding the warnings. It is a disgrace to the authorities that monitor health and safety in the area. It is a disgrace to the British companies that use the place without making sure that people are working in a safe environment.

But it is also a disgrace to those of us who crave cheaper throwaway clothes without ever looking into where these items come

that was written for them. I don’t want royalty to sit on the fence. I want them to leave the gate open once in a while and say something that matters. I don’t suppose that they have to please us too much, as they don’t get elected, so they will still be

in power, or at least in the money for a very long time to come. Anyway, I await Prince Harry’s next fall from grace with cheeky eagerness. He is fun and his blunders are nowhere near as offensive nor as frequent as his grandfather’s.

from. We are all responsible and we should all take the blame. Our hunger for “more for less” is a sad and sickening sign of the times. We don’t need 30 pairs of shoes or 50 blouses or shirts. We just WANT, WANT, WANT and now look at the price that has been paid ... over 1,000 people dead, mostly women. Mothers, daughters, grandmothers and I suspect a fair number of children who would be better served in school have died. I intend to do my bit. I am going to take the initiative to be more responsible. This dreadful state of affairs is a wake-up call to us all.

Back In Time

ALPHA 1472

Singer and comedian Eddie Hastings has been performing in Tenerife for a number of years. He has worked as resident compere in a few major venues and was also one of the original members of vocal groups “Tuxedo Nights” and “Glam Slam”. These days, however, it isn’t his career as an entertainer that is making people sit up and look. Eddie has had a vision for some time for a series of books. His dream has finally taken shape in the form of his first novel “Alpha 1472” His first book is now available on amazon.com. The plot takes place on a planet with its own biosphere which travels on a huge elliptical orbit. Once every two thousand five hundred years it comes into range of another planet that is home to a species similar to them. The space ship Alpha 1472 is sent to recover information left for them with disastrous consequences. Mary Emmanuel is the navigator on her final mission for the company. And although the company was aware that she was in the first three months of her pregnancy, it had been decided that she

and her unborn baby would be fine to accompany the crew on their mission. Neither she nor her husband, David, could have imagined the outcome of the space shuttle

Alpha 1472. I am waiting until I have some quality free time before I sink my teeth into the book. Check it out at amazon. com.

Where did I leave the Tardis? I feel as though I have taken a trip back in time. Over the last few years it has become evident to me that television and film companies have finally run out of new ideas. Doctor Who and Star Trek are back! They are bigger than ever before. Dallas is about to enter its third great new series and now ..... the sci-fi epic “Space 1999” is to be re-imagined. The new show will be called Space 2099 (WOW! What a great title! That must have

taken some brainpower to devise) and is currently in planning and pre-production.

Batman movies are big bucks and Superman and Spiderman are also flying around the cinemas at great speed and great cost. Pop music seems to have returned to the eighties with synth sounds playing the lead role in Lady Gagadonna’s musical treats. Theatres around the UK have presented stage versions of “Hi de Hi” and “Dad’s Army” to admiring retro fans and to people who haven’t seen the originals. With this in mind, I would like to see the return of a few more old favourites. Spangles, Aztec Bars and “Cider Iced Lollies” please. I want to see “Tomor-

row’s World” and “Top of the Pops”. I would love to be able to watch a TV programme from beginning to end without a widget in the corner of the screen telling me what is on next or what channel it is and I would like to have a chance to read the closing titles of TV shows instead of seeing them whizz off the screen in miniature. I want telephone boxes to reappear on the streets, but they must be red and make me feel comfortable about British life. I want the boy who cycles up the hill for an unsliced Hovis loaf to keep on cycling and wouldn’t it be nice if the old corner shop opened up that used to be near to your house. Eeeh lad, they don’t know they’re born these days!

Lining Man Bulldozes Through ToSilver Horsemeat Neighbours Homes Scandal BArry Alan Swegle badly damaged the homes of four neighbours by driving a bulldozer-like vehicle through their houses and cut the power to thousands after a longrunning dispute with neighbours.

The 51-year-old knocked one of the homes in Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, in Port Angeles off its foundations. An electricity pole was also torn down and a pickup truck destroyed. Barbara Porter was inside her house when she saw the machine come barrelling through a wall: “You could just hear noise, things getting broke up and tore up and pushed into my place,” she said. She managed to escape from the house before she was crushed. “I knew I had to get out of the house because I was afraid he was going to tear it down, and I don’t think I would have lived if I had been in it and he had tore it down,” she said. Keith Haynes, who lives near one of the damaged homes, said that the man “Just went nuts. He took a skidder and took out two houses. I mean demolished. It was like a war zone,” he said. Another witness Bobee Ward screamed at Swegle to stop: “When I’m yelling, ‘What are you doing?’ He looked right at me. He was just - he

Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Borte said the machine was an International Harvester TD-25, similar to a Caterpillar D-9. The vehicle is believed to have been used for logging. Swegle is being held over malicious mischief. His mother said she was just grateful that no one was hurt or killed.

The firm says it believes this shows that the recent scandals have had a positive effect on the nation’s eating habits, with Britons becoming more aware of the health risks of eating too many processed ready meals. Almost a quarter (24%) of the 2007 UK adults questioned by ICM said they had cut down on the amount of processed food they eat. Nearly 30% said they had been put off processed meals as a result of the

horsemeat scandal. And just under 2.8 million said they had thrown out processed ready meals like lasagnes and curries. The survey also found that people are eating around 20% more British apples, garden peas, cauliflower and cabbage. The research was to start Tefal’s Fresh Week, an initiative to encourage the UK to exchange convenience and ready-made meals for fresh unprocessed food.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

Tropical Trees Add Exotic Appeal

Jacarandas around the world

The beautiful Jacaranda tree has even inspired festivals in some parts of the world. The city of Grafton in New South Wales, Australia, is well-known for having a lot of these trees there and in late October and early November the city stages a festival while the Jacarandas are in full bloom. A street parade, local public holiday and many other events are all part of the Grafton Jacaranda Festival. A Jacaranda Queen and Jacaranda Princess are chosen and announced at a formal ball. Pretoria in South Africa is known as the “Jacaranda City” because it has so many of the trees growing in its streets, parks and gardens. It is believed by some local people there that students at the University of Pretoria will pass their exams if they are lucky enough to have a Jacaranda flower fall on their heads. In Mexico, Los Angeles, Lisbon and Zimbabwe the flowering of the Jacaranda is seen as a sign that spring has arrived.

Tulip Tree

One of the real delights of Tenerife is the amazing display of colour and beauty created by the blossoming of the many ornamental trees that are grown on the island. In spring and summer the streets, parks and gardens are ablaze with vivid reds, brilliant yellows and purplish-blue. I often get asked what the various trees are so thought I would use my column to talk about some of the main ones we see. First on my list is the Tulip Tree (Spathodea campanulata) with its large scarlet flowers that do bear a resemblance to the popular garden plant the tree is named after. The Tulip Tree comes from Tropical Africa and does well in the resort towns of Tenerife where it is often planted. The flowers contain water before they open up and wild canaries are said to pierce the buds to take a drink. It is also known as the Fountain Tree.

Royal Poinciana

The Royal Poinciana, Flamboyant or Flame of the Forest (Delonix regia) also has bright red flowers and produces blazes of brilliant colour, so is very aptly named. It comes from Madagascar originally and likes a hot, dry climate. It has pretty fern-like bipinnate leaves and after flowering strange dark brownish-black seedpods are produced. These pods can reach nearly 2ft in length but are usually shorter. The bean-like seeds inside the pods rattle if you shake them and make a great sound. They can be used as a natural percussion instrument. The trees are deciduous and after the leaves have dropped the dark pods can easily be seen hanging down from the bare branches. The seeds are very easy to germinate and the saplings will grow rapidly but don’t plant them near buildings because this tree has a very aggressive root system when it has grown larger. In contrast to the red flowers of the last two trees, the Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) has a delicate lilac-blue flower that it produces in bunches. After flowering the seeds develop in hard woody pods with a curious shape. Once again these seeds are very easy to sprout and the Jacaranda grows at a very fast rate. I had one growing in

my living room back in Wales and it reached over 6ft in a year. The Jacaranda comes from South America but is planted in many subtropical and tropical regions of the world. When the flowers are finished they fall off the tree and leave a carpet of colour on the ground below. The Jerusalem Thorn (Parkinsonia aculeata) is by no means such a colourful tree when in bloom but it nevertheless has its own ornamen-

Gorgeous Senna

Jerusalem Thorn tree

tal beauty with green trunks and branches, delicate looking bipinnate leaves and small yellow flowers.. It actually originates in Tropical America not Jerusalem and does well in the south of Tenerife especially. It is very drought resistant and doesn’t mind the hot and dry conditions. The Dombeya (Dombeya wallichii) is also known as Pink Ball and Tropical Hydrangea, and indeed its flowers are pink and carried in balls and

Dombeya

they do look like hydrangea flowers but hanging down. It comes from Madagascar but does well in Tenerife though is seen mostly in the north of the island. The Gorgeous Senna (Cassia spectabilis) is aptly named too and is one of the most magnificent of the flowering trees grown in Tenerife, It has bright yellow flowering spikes that it lifts up into the heavens above and against a blue sky they are visually stunning. It is one of the food-plants for the caterpillars of the African Migrant Butterfly (Catopsilia florella) which is increasingly seen flying in the resort areas of the island. It flies fast and has yellowish wings. It was able to colonise Tenerife because its food-plants are being grown here. Its larva also eats the leaves of the other Senna species (C. didymobotrya) which is often seen in gardens and shrub borders. The Yellow Trumpetbush or Yellow Bells (Tecoma stans) is a large shrub that can easily grow into a small tree. It is cultivated in many parts of Tenerife and when in flower is a very beautiful plant with its bell-like blooms.

The Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) forms a tall evergreen tree up to 30m in height, though often shorter than this. It has attractive fernlike foliage and clusters of goldenyellow flowers that bring this tree into being really ablaze with colour when it is in bloom. It is often used to line streets but can also be grown as a houseplant when it is young. The Australian Umbrella Tree (Brassaia actinophylla) gets its name not only from its country of origin but because it’s evergreen glossy leaves form in groups that are held out like small umbrellas. Its red flowers, though very small, form in curious spiky umbels that point skywards.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

This is a perfect time to promote yourself and your ideas. Think about upgrading your website - or starting one - especially if you have products or services to sell. You may be doing more writing, phoning, or getting in touch in general. It’s also a good time to make a plan regarding any recent business ideas. Getting them down on paper might be the first step to success. Influences around you make this a perfect week for entertaining at home. You’ll really enjoy it!

Aries 21 March to 19 April

This week, or perhaps in coming weeks, you might be tempted to sign up for a course of study. An unexpected travel invitation could also come your way. Go with it because it could open some exciting new doors. There seems to be plenty of news on the horizon, much of it positive, but you also need to watch out for a misunderstanding, especially over the weekend. Matters of the heart look promising. Your unique charm opens doors for you.

Taurus 20 April to 20 May

It’s a good week to keep your feet on the ground where business interests are concerned. You’ll be eager to improve your prospects for long-range financial security and this, as well as any positive business move, is favored. A sudden flash of inspiration may help you solve a problem that has concerned you for a while, especially one linked to money. A business associate might need to be handled with tact, but his or her heart is likely in the right place.

gemini 21 May to 21 June

You may be feeling vulnerable, but don’t worry. You’re still in a cosmic cycle in which it helps to relax, recharge your batteries, and reflect on the best way forward. You’ll really be in your element from midweek forward. You might need to watch the tendency to put things off or dissipate your energies. For best results this week, pick a goal and focus on it until you’ve successfully reached it. There could be a new admirer out there for you if you play your cards right.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

It’s good to spread charm and goodwill. Everything should go as planned, although you might have to contend with unexpected events that could prove crucial to reaching a goal. Fate could lend you a helping hand at key moments. Networking and socializing look very promising. They bring many opportunities for business and romantic connections. Pay attention if you get an intuitive feeling to talk to someone or call someone. It could positively affect your plans.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

Work and career matters may become engrossing, so much so that you manage to make quite a bit of headway. You might be tempted to overspend on leisure interests, but it’s a great time to reach understandings, make new associations, and generally hang out with friends. Plans that include travel for pleasure could be on your mind, but you’re also eager to step up your professional status and create security with a financial buffer that keeps you safe from unexpected eventualities.

virgo 23 August to 22 September

You seem to be making important headway with work or business-related concerns. The major focus on your career zone brings opportunities to flourish as long as you’re willing to track them down and take the first step. Communication with fellow professionals or those in your line of work may help you bring plans to fruition. Research your options and create a plan that will see you through to the success you deserve. You might be in the mood to improve your skills or travel.

Libra 23 September to 23 October

You could be in a fun-loving mood and enjoy doing something different for entertainment. You could reach a new level of understanding with a loving tie. However, it helps to be sensible in the use of your credit. You might be tempted to go over your limit if you’re really enjoying yourself. Pleasure plans might be made on the spur of the moment. They could involve travel or a desire to expand your horizons by moving outside your comfort zone. It’s time to be courageous!

Scorpio 24 October to 21 November

Being friendly and personable should open doors for you in business and romance. You might get the green light to proceed with a matter that’s been on hold, especially one linked to joint financial affairs. Be sure to read the fine print before you sign anything. The unexpected is likely to cause a change in your routine. Be tactful and diplomatic with both business and personal ties. You can be very persuasive, especially this week, but don’t go over the top.

Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

Others may be captivated by your charm, so expect a few compliments on how well you look. You’re a team player this week and for some while yet. You succeed when you work alongside others and share your unique talents. Proper timing is the key to getting ahead. Know when to push your interests and when to bide your time. There’s every chance that opportunity may knock on your door, but it helps to weed out the great invitations from the potentially shady ones.

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January

Romance and creative activities bring pleasure this week. It’s a good time to consider taking your sweetheart away from it all for a short break. The chance to relax might do you good. Regarding your health, you might need to work harder to keep up with those regular workouts. Reading some motivational literature might get you in the mood to keep going. Take advantage of any lucky breaks at work, but watch out for a situation that might confuse everyone for a while.

Lose Weight With A Smartphone App

A SIMPLe smartphone app could help overweight and obese people to lose weight, researchers say. Designed by British doctors its aim is to promote “food memory” so that people recall what they have eaten and are encouraged not to snack on high-calorie treats. Before eating food or drinking a beverage, the user takes a picture of what they are about to eat. After finishing the meal or drink, the user then looks at the picture that was taken, and answers questions about the consumption experience: “Did you finish it all?” and “How full are you now?” Then, before further meals, users also look back at the file of pictures that have been taken in the course of the day, and receive a text message urging them to remind them of what they have already eaten. The researchers recruited 12 overweight or obese men and women and monitored them over four weeks in a small-scale pilot study. The volunteers accessed the app more than five times a day on average, and recorded 2.7 daily “episodes” of eating and drinking. Over the study period, the participants lost 1.5kg (3.3 pounds) on average. Six lost a kilogram (2.2 pounds) or more, and four lost between zero and one kilogram (2.2 pounds). Two gained weight, by 100 and 400 grams (3.5 ounces and 14 ounces) respectively. “Raising awareness of eating and weight loss achieved suggests this approach could be fruitful,” said University of Liverpool investigator Eric Robinson. “Given

that our trial was a very brief intervention with little contact time and no nutritional advice or support, this is a promising finding.” The work was unveiled at the European Congress on Obesity in Liverpool.

A previous review of the evidence by the team also concluded that distractions while eating, listening to the radio, watching television or using a computers, increased food intake by up to 50%.

Healthy Chinese Food Made Easy

People always associate Chinese food as being unhealthy and complicated to make at home. Normally, a lot of Chinese food uses high concentrates of ‘MSG’ - Monsodium Glutamate, which is generally added as a flavour enhancer, but you really don’t need this in Chinese food, you can make the perfect Chinese dish without it! Statistics have been showing recently the average takeaway meal for one person from your local Chinese can contain as much as 60.4g of fat and up to 62.3g of sugar – not really good for the health conscious amongst us! Here’s a lovely easy sweet and Sour Pork recipe, instead of using balls of battered meat, it is coated in soya beans or even dry roasted peanuts if you prefer, and lightly fried in groundnut oil. The sauce is totally natural; you will be amazed at the flavours of this wonderful sweet and sour variant.

Sweet and Sour Pork Ingredients

For the pork 4 pieces of pork loin 3 tbsp. roasted whole soya beans or dry roasted peanuts Few pinches ground white pepper 1 tsp. crushed dried chillies 2 tbsp. groundnut oil For the sweet and sour sauce 125g/4oz canned pineapple, in natural juice 125ml/4fl oz. pineapple juice 3 tbsp. freshly squeezed lime juice Light soy sauce Splash of dry sherry Ground white pepper

Method

For the pork, place the roasted soya beans, a few pinches of ground white pepper and the dried chillies into a food processor and pulse until coarsely ground. If you don’t have a food processor a good old rolling pin with the nuts packed inside a clean tea towel with a dash of bashing will

Healthy Egg Fried Rice Ingredients:

2 tbsp. of groundnut oil 2 pinches of ground white pepper Pinch of salt 2 tbsp. of toasted sesame oil 2 tbsp. of light soy sauce 400g cold leftover cooked jasmine rice 50g mixed vegetables (peas, mini broccoli florets, sweet corn kernels and grated carrot) 3 eggs, beaten Sprigs of coriander, to garnish (optional)

Method:

Heat a wok over a high heat until it starts to smoke and then add half the groundnut oil. Pour

in the beaten eggs and leave to settle for 1-2 minutes, then swirl around the wok and, using a wooden spoon, stir the eggs to lightly scramble them. Transfer to a plate and set aside. Reheat the wok and add the remaining groundnut oil. Tip in mixed vegetables and stir-fry for less than 1 minute. Add the cooked rice and mix well to break it down in the wok. Return the scrambled eggs to the wok and season with the soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, salt and pepper, then remove from the heat and serve immediately, garnished with coriander sprigs, if you like.

do the trick! Transfer to a shallow bowl and set aside. Roll the steaks in the soya bean mixture until well-coated, and then pat lightly to secure the mixture to the meat, shaking off any excess. Heat a wok until smoking and add the groundnut oil, then add the pork steaks and cook for 2-3 minutes on both sides, or until golden-brown and cooked through. Remove the steaks from the wok transfer to a warm plate to rest. For the sweet and sour sauce, place all of the sauce ingredients into a food processor and blend to a smooth paste. Pour the sweet and sour sauce into the wok used to cook the pork and leave to simmer for 1-2 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced to a thick consistency. Season to taste, with light soy sauce, dry sherry and ground white pepper. To serve, pour the sauce over the pork and serve with fried rice or steamed white rice, and a shredded pepper salad.

New Peugeot Audi A5 Coupe 308 Revealed And Cabriolet

A LITTLe while ago Peugeot started struggling to make e n d s meet, so it came up with a plan so cunning y o u could stick a tail on it and call it a weasel. ‘Let’s tell everyone we’re a posh company and charge more money,’ they said.

The first cars Peugeot decided were posh were the not bad 208 hatch and 2008 crossover, and now there’s this - the Focus and Golfsized 308. It’s slightly shorter and lower than the outgoing car, because underneath that bourgeoisie sheet metal it’s based on the new EMP2 platform, developed by parent company, PSA. Normally we don’t prattle

as low as 85g/km for the cleanest models. Inside, there’s barely a button in sight.

on about stuff like platform codes, but this is actually quite an important step forward for Lord Peugeotington-Symthe. It set PSA back £532m to develop, and as well as all the normal claimed improvements in ride and handling, the engine mounts are really low so the bonnet can look sharper and more sleek. And that dials out the chubby bonnet of Peugeot’s yore. The company claims it’s also as much as 140kg lighter than its predecessor (depending on engine and trim levels), and that’s seen an improvement in emissions -

The cabin borrows from the manufacturer’s ‘i-cockpit’ design philosophy, which we first saw in the 208. That means there’ll be a miniscule, Hob Nob-sized steering wheel, heads-up instrument binnacle, tall centre console and glaringly stark everything else - no need for buttons here, because most of the major controls are taken car of via the 9-inch touchscreen. We’ll get more info when it arrives officially at the Frankfurt motor show in September. Reckon its posh enough for the brand’s upmarket aspirations?

Beatle Drive At Speed Festival noT many people can say their first car was a ferrari, but John Lennon could and now music and motoring fans alike will be keen to get their hands on his Azzuro blue 330gT 2+2 Coupé when it goes under the hammer in July.

The sports car personally chosen by the Beatle has been added to the Bonhams auction at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Chichester on Friday, July 12. Lennon had a ticket to drive as the band’s hit Ticket to Ride topped the charts in February 1965. He had just passed his driving test and reports in the press inspired luxury car dealers to bring their best cars to his Kenwood home in Weybridge, Surrey, hop-

ing to win a famous client. After inspecting the array of Aston Martins, Jaguars and Maseratis, the star picked the right-hand drive Ferrari, paying £6,500. That translates to more than £110,000 in modern money, but such was the success of the band that he would easily have been able to afford the price and the cost of car insurance to drive it. Lennon, who loved fast cars, used the Ferrari for three years, driving more than 20,000 miles. One of only 500 built by the Italian car-maker, the 330GT

2+2 Coupé has had its original DUL 4C plate restored by the DVLA and it is thought the bidding for the car could reach as high as £220,000 at the auction. The lot includes a file on the car’s history and correspondence with the Beatles singer/songwriter. Senior specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, Sholto Gilbertson, said it was amazing to think that Beatlemania was so big that Lennon didn’t even have to leave his home to buy his first car and it was a Ferrari.

AuDI successfully face lifts its handsome coupe and convertible.

The Audi A5 coupe and cabriolet, as well as their powerful S5 derivatives, are among the most beautiful cars on the road today, and they still look fresh more than four years after their debut. Yet it’s time for a midcycle face lift that freshens not only the cars’ styling, but also their technology. Unfortunately, in this renewal, the S5 coupe gets a new engine. The previous 354-hp, naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8 goes away, making room for the 333-hp, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 already found in the S5 cabrio. Torque stands pat at 325 lb-ft. This swap comes as no surprise, and will improve fuel economy significantly. While the supercharged six is a great engine, we will miss the marvelous sound of the V-8. A splendid 211-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder remains the base engine in the A5, which is fine with us. For those who lament the passing of the V-8–powered S5, Audi offers special consolation with the upcoming RS5. This model— on sale in Europe already—is powered by a thoroughly reworked version of the 4.2-liter V-8 producing an awesome 450 hp. We hear that the RS5 will arrive in the U.S. in early 2012. Meanwhile, the S5 re-

ceives an upgraded Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a crown-gear center differential that allows for variable torque splits. Other markets, of course, get a wider range of choices. Gas options for overseas A5s include a detuned version of the supercharged V-6 rated at 272 hp and an entry-level 1.8-liter turbo four with 170 horses. There are no less than four turbo-diesels: a 177hp, 2.0-liter four and three 3.0-liter V-6s. One six makes 204 hp, another 245, and the third is said to be a “clean diesel” version—and here we thought these were all clean diesels—although its power output remains undisclosed. We also miss out on the A5 and S5 Sportbacks, the beautiful hatchback derivatives,

although their big brother, the A7, is sold here. Which brings us to styling: The most obvious changes include a reshaped grille and new headlights with updated internals. Also new: the fog lights, the lower air intakes, and the taillights. The infotainment system is upgraded and now features fewer keys but more functions, and the steering wheel, column stalks, wood or aluminum trim, and obligatory chrome décor are all new to the A5/S5 line. Is it enough to bring the pair into the present? Stylistically, we’re not sure the competition from BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, and Mercedes-Benz had caught up to begin with. We’d call that a nice head start to a pretty successful update.

Skint

Channel 4 - 21:00 - 22:00 Brand new three-part observational documentary series Skint tells provocative and revealing stories from the inside out about how people survive without work. The series focuses on the lives of a group of people who are either in long-term unemployment, have never worked, or are growing up without any expectation of working. With access over nine months in Scunthorpe, Skint follows a father and stepfather of nine, who used to work at the steelworks, and his friends and neighbours, many of whom live on an estate in one of the most deprived areas of the town. At its height the steelworks employed 27,000

43

people. It now employs a sixth of that number. With work continuing to be hard to find, the people featured in this series are thrown back on their own resources. Told with energy, humour and boldness, the series offers an insight into their lives, highlighting social issues such as youth unemployment, crime, welfare dependency, truancy and addiction; but with the characters also revealing their ingenuity, resilience, community support and love and pride of family. Skint gets behind the headlines as people, who are often maligned for their lifestyle, offer their own story and show the real impact of worklessness, both today and over generations.

Bankers: Payback Time BBC 2 - 21:00 - 22:00 In this final episode, Bankers: Payback Time, tells the eye-opening story of how Britain’s multi-billion pound financial misselling scandal came about. With first-hand accounts from bank bosses, sales staff, politicians and customers, the film charts three decades of extraordinary changes inside our high street banks. They brought us convenient, free banking services, easy credit and paid their way at the centre of the nation’s economy. But as some bankers now candidly admit, they abused the trust of their customers in the search for quick profits. Sir Philip Hampton, RBS Chairman; Antonio Horta Osorio, Lloyds Group CEO; and the

Archbishop of Canterbury dissect this banking crisis and discuss how this dysfunctional system can be rebuilt. Latest estimates suggest the compensation bill for payment protection insurance (PPI) could be £25 billion. At one point, PPI was delivering up to a third of retail banks’ profits. Payback Time unravels the astonishing story of how one of the biggest consumer rip-offs in British history came about. The public have a paradoxical relationship with banks, wanting the revenue they contribute to the nation’s coffers and technological advances like online banking and ATMs, while simultaneously despairing at their behaviour.

Tiger Woods Lampard Row New Twist Signs For One More Year

f

rAnK Lampard has signed a one-year contract extension at Chelsea. The 34-year-old midfielder, who recently became the club’s record goalscorer, would have been out of contract this summer. But the England international maintained that he always wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge. “I’m absolutely delighted,” Lampard said in a statement on the official Chelsea website. “Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. “We’ve been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period it was always amicable. “I want to thank Mr Abramovich for everything he’s done in making the dream a reality. I love this club, the staff, the players and especially the supporters, who have treated me fantastically since the day I arrived. “The thought of helping the club to more success in the forthcoming years is all I ever wanted. I couldn’t be happier.”

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “Frank has been an important player for Chelsea Football Club for a long time and has played a significant part in the club’s success. “We have been talking to him since the end of last year and our discussions have been entirely positive throughout. “We are delighted we are now announcing an extension to his contract which will keep him at the club until 2014.” Lampard is the thirdhighest appearance-maker in Chelsea’s history with 607

outings and next season will be his 13th at Stamford Bridge after joining from West Ham in 2001. He recently surpassed Bobby Tambling’s 202 goals for the club by scoring both goals in the 2-1 win at Aston Villa. During his time at Chelsea, Lampard has won the UEFA Champions League, the Premier League title on three occasions, the FA Cup four times and the League Cup twice. On Wednesday, he was part of the side that beat Benfica 2-1 in Amsterdam to win the Europa League.

SuggeSTIonS that Tiger Woods lied about his actions that led to a row with Sergio garcia at Sawgrass have been refuted by an on-course marshal.

The Spaniard claimed his was distracted by the crowd’s reaction to Woods pulling a club from his bag just as Garcia was about to hit his approach to the second hole in the third round. Woods denied the accusation and insisted he had been told by a marshal that Garcia

had already hit his second shot - claims that were then dismissed by marshal Gary Anderson. Sports Illustrated quoted Anderson as saying: “Tiger didn’t ask us nothing and we didn’t say nothing. We are told not to talk to the players.” But another marshal on the second hole, Brian Nedrich, backed up Woods’ version of events in an interview with the Florida Times-Union. “It is not true and definitely unfair to Tiger,” said Nedrich, who insisted he told Woods

that Garcia had already played his shot. Another marshal, Lance Paczkowski, apparently appealed for silence in the gallery behind Woods thinking that Garcia was yet to play. “That’s when I yelled back at Lance, ‘No, he’s already hit,’” Nedrich said. “Tiger had already taken his club, but we did tell him that Sergio had hit.” “It’s disingenuous to suggest that Tiger is a liar because he got a minor detail wrong. Basically, he told the truth.”

Praise For Rafa After Europa Win C helsea defenders David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta praised interim boss Rafa Benitez after their Europa League glory.

Benitez’s term at Stamford Bridge is expected to an end after Sunday’s clash with Everton. He will sign off with silverware added to the trophy cabinet after Branislav Ivanovic’s last-gasp header secured a 2-1 victory over Benfica in Amsterdam. Luiz said: “Many people said bad things about him this year, but he is a professional guy with a lot of character and he deserves a title this season. He is a fantastic coach, I am so happy with this because he helped me a lot, he taught me many things this year.”

Azpilicueta added: “Football is like this. Sometimes you change the players, you change the manager. I am very happy with him, I have played a lot of games, and he gave me a lot of confidence. Life is meant to carry on, his career will carry on. He tried the best for Chelsea, I am a Chelsea player and I am very happy.” Jose Mourinho is expected to leave Real Madrid and return to Chelsea this summer. Fullback Paulo Ferreira, who followed Mourinho to West London in 2004, would welcome the chance to work with his old boss again: “He is someone who came into Chelsea and this means titles; that is what the club wants. The last 10 years that he has been a coach you can see he succeeds in every league. That is why everyone wants to see him here.”

Honda Returns To F1

Honda will return to Formula 1 as an engine supplier and reunite with McLaren from 2015, the Japanese manufacturer giant has officially confirmed.

Following months of growing speculation that McLaren were poised to end their near two-decade relationship with Mercedes and revive their previously all-conquering Honda partnership from the end of next season, Honda’s CEO Takanobu Ito and McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh confirmed the deal in a press conference in Japan on Thursday. The mouthwatering tie-up is being described as a “multiyear Formula 1 technology partnership” which will see McLaren run both Honda’s allnew V6 turbocharged engine and energy recovery system, the power plant already under development at the Japanese firm’s R&D facility in Tochigi. Reacting to the breaking news in the UK on Thursday morning, Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft tweeted: “Personally I think

53

it’s great for the sport that Honda are returning. With V6 units it makes sense to them now but pressure is on to deliver.” However, Whitmarsh expressed his confidence that the second incarnation of the partnership could live up to the glorious success of the first, when the two companies won four Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship doubles on the spin between 1988 and 1992. “It’s fantastic news for everyone who loves Formula 1 to be able to welcome Honda back to Formula 1,” said the McLaren Team Principal. “Together, we’re about to embark on a new and extremely exciting chapter in McLaren’s history. Like McLaren, Honda is a company with motor racing woven into the fabric of its heritage. We’re proud and thrilled to be joining forces once more to take on the world in Formula 1. “Whilst both companies are fully aware that we’re embarking on a very demanding journey together, we’re hugely committed to the success of the partnership, and we’ll spend the next 18

months working together to ensure that we’re fully established and competitive ahead of our first grand prix together in 2015.” The announcement marks a glorious, and high-profile, return to the top level of motorsport for Honda, whose last F1 venture, then as a team owner, ended abruptly at the end of 2008 when they sold their Brackleybased outfit - which is ironically now Mercedes - to Ross Brawn in wake of plunging sales of their road cars amid the worldwide financial crisis and two years of dismal ontrack underperformance. The Japanese car maker’s greatest successes in F1 have come in the guise of an engine supplier with first Williams and then McLaren and their CEO and President said they were attracted to a return by the sport’s impending new greener engine rules. “Ever since its establishment, Honda has been a company which grows by taking on challenges in racing,” Takanobu Ito said. “Honda has a long history of advancing our technologies and nurturing our people by participating in the world’s

most prestigious automobile racing series. The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies and this is central to our participation in F1. “We have the greatest respect for the FIA’s decision to introduce these new regulations that are both highly challenging but also attractive to manufacturers that pursue environmental technologies and to Formula One Group, which has developed F1 into a high value, top car racing category supported by enthusiastic fans. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Mr Jean Todt, the President of FIA and to Mr Bernie Ecclestone, the CEO of Formula One Group who showed great understanding and cooperation to help realize our participation in F1 racing.”

Indeed, McLaren’s press release contained words of congratulations from both Ecclestone and Todt, with the latter saying: “I am very happy to hear about Honda’s important decision to return to Formula 1 with McLaren from 2015. “The introduction of the new powertrain next year, in the form of a 1.6-litre V6 engine with direct injection and energy recovery, is a very exciting challenge and demonstrates a vision for the future of the sport. I am sure that Honda will become a strong contender in years to come.” The flip side of the deal means that McLaren will only run current partner, and former shareholder, Mercedes’ new engines for one solitary year of F1’s new V6 turbo engine regulation era, the two parties having been together since 1995. The partnership has won

three drivers’ world titles, the 1998 constructors’ crown and 78 races in its 19 seasons to date and Whitmarsh made clear that McLaren were focused on continuing that winning tradition during the relationship’s final 18 months. “It’s appropriate to recognise that until the end of 2014 we’ll maintain a full commitment to our existing and long-standing partner, Mercedes-Benz, for which we retain the utmost respect and with whom we intend to continue to work diligently and professionally,” the McLaren chief added. “McLaren-Mercedes has so far won an incredible 78 grands prix and four world championships. We aim to cap our long-standing partnership with the same ambition and resolve with which we began it: namely, to keep winning.”

if I was playing in Paris. I need to make a plan as to what I do. I’ll chat with the guys and make a plan for the next few days then make a decision on Paris after the next five days. “I want to make sure it goes away. It’s been a problem since the end of 2011 but it got bad during last

year’s clay season.” Murray’s match with Granollers was tied at 1-1 in sets when he quit, and his opponent was sympathetic. Granollers said: “He is a good player and he can do well in Roland Garros, and if he has a problem then I can understand he is thinking of Paris.”

Murray Unlikely At French Open

Andy Murray says he “would be very surprised” if he can play at the French Open.

The world No 2 was forced to retire hurt during his ATP Rome Masters match with Marcel Granollers on Wednesday after suffering a recurrence of a lower back problem. And a despondent Murray, who was supposed to be celebrating his 26th birthday in Rome, delivered a grim verdict on his chances of competing at Roland Garros later this month. “I have an issue with my lower back,” he said. “It’s been an issue for a while. “I would be very surprised

SPIrogrAPh, KerPlunk, and Mouse Trap, as a spotty youth I remember taking these and other games into school for the last day of term, it was a time to doss around and forget the usual routine. That mood was back at the heliodoro as CD Tenerife surrendered 0-1 to relegation scrappers Alcala.

With the group title secure and these last two games having no real meaning for Tenerife, the coach rested several players and gave the young fringe hopefuls a run out including a debut for Icod born goalie Roberto. As well as an unfamiliar look to the

team sheet there was an unfamiliar silence from the terraces for the first 15 minutes as a protest against the President for charging season ticket holders for the play off game. It was a strange day when the spirit of celebration drained away as a dire game unfolded. Nico and Fran Ochoa were surprise midfield choices and neither contributed anything to spur the home champions forward. Ayoze used his speed as well as he could up front but the service was weak, only Cristo Martin showed any urgency. Alcala had to win to stand any chance of safety and they found encouragement from the Tenerife defence, especially with Tarantino looking very uncomfortable in the

left back slot. Ayoze had the best chance of the first half firing wide on the half hour but Alcala sensed they might have caught Tenerife on an off day and after going close with a high shot they grabbed the lead on the stroke of half time. A corner caught out the hesitant Roberto and Ivan Garcia was able to steal in with a headed goal. A collective groan echoed around the ground as we adjourned for the half time break. Coach Alvaro Cervera tried to stabilize the ship and brought on Bruno to bolster the defence and Loro to add some class and ideas to the attack. It worked to an extent; well the second half could hardly be as bad as the

uplifting moment of the game – marginally ahead of the arrival of the ice cream seller. Aridane came off the bench and although he headed one chance wide, he also struggled to lift the mood. Ayoze did well to break into the Alcala box but he needed support and most of his team mates were grazing by the centre circle. It was a tough one for the 10,621 crowd to endure, the champagne was flat and although the players did get some stick their credit is high after a brilliant season. Hopefully lessons will be learned, particularly about some of the positional experiments, and our young back up goalie will have gained a lot just from playing at this level. Salamanca away on Sunday will close the league season, then the play off draw will decide who Tenerife play in the home and away promotion scramble. Win the big prize and this shocker will soon be forgotten as one of those days.

Island Hopping A Fond Away For Champions Day Farewell For League Hopefuls CD Marino

It’s been a good season for Tenerife footballers, and not just here on our island. The newly crowned champions of the Malta Premier League, Birkirkara, have two former residents of our rock in their side. Yosimar started the season at Granadilla before making his move in January and former CD Tenerife B captain, Moreno, has been one of their key players all season. They clinched the title beating Hibernian 3-1 in front of a 9,252 crowd in thee national stadium.

As champions, Birkirkara, go into the early qualifying round of the European Champions League and will be hoping to squeeze through into the group stages. The two players are waiting to see if their contracts are renewed so they can join the glory chase. Lower down the table Jose Luis Armario Negrin, playing as Pacha, has

finished top scorer for the Malta Premier League and is hoping to get a move to one of the bigger clubs on the island. The striker lined up for several Tenerife lower league teams such as Granadilla and San Isidro before moving to Malta to play for amateurs Melita. After looking sharp with the struggling side he

was offered a professional contract with Rabat Ajax. It’s not been the best of seasons for The Magpies, one of several clubs calling the national stadium home but Pacha has just finished the campaign as top scorer with 22 goals. Rabat ended up 10th out of 12 in the Premier League but ended with a flourish winning 0-5 at Balzan.

Ayoze has added an attacking edge to his defensive role during his loan with Marino and he forced a sharp save from Bono with a first half header. At the other end Matias was defiant in goal denying Cidoncha and Borja in a short burst of home pressure. Jaime kept goalie Bono on his guard and Balduino was on alert for a half chance although he missed the target on the half hour. Balduino was denied again by Bono early in the second

Play Off Hopes End In Thriller

For CB Canarias basketball team the championship play off dream is over but they fought all the way before losing their ACB league game at Murcia 111-108 in extra time.

Missing Saul Blanco and Jaime Heras the rest of the squad dug deep with Blagota Sekulic outstanding for his 25 point haul and Nico Richotti not far behind on 22 points. It was close all the way, the La Laguna side built a three point lead at the half way stage but Murcia clawed their way back to end the fourth quarter all square at 96 each. The five minutes of overtime was just too much for the visitors as they were shaded out.

Even without the extra end of season games it has been an incredible season for CB Canarias and this Sunday they want to put on a winning show at home to second placed Laboral Kutxa (12.15 start) to thank the fans for regular 4,000

crowds. That home backing has seen CB Canarias record 13 wins in 16 home games, With supporters able to buy shares in the club over the summer it all adds up to a stable foundation to push on for even greater glory next season.

half before giving way to Ramses who has had to settle for short sub appearances since arriving in January. This was a day for the Gran Canaria striker to show his worth, after 70

minutes his cross was too much for Bono to hold and Rafa Hernandez pounced to get the decisive goal. Dorta and Ramses had clear chances to add late goals and there was still time for

Dorta to get sent off for two bookings. Another spirited showing by Marino, this Sunday they close the season with a home game against Guijuelo at 11am.
