Arona is Las Vistas Fashion 2013 Paying Beach

“Arona is in fashion” has proved, year after year, an opportunity to show the variety and commercial quality available in the municipality of Arona, boosting to trade and bringing different trends to the public.

Once again, supported For this reason, once again, with the support of the Department of economic promotion and employment of the City Hall of Arona this project will be involving businesses in different parts of the municipality, not only in Los Cristianos as it has been in the past. The latest “Arona is in fashion” has an even greater significance, given the historical relationship between fashion and culture, the activities carried out within this project as well as having a commercial character will have a strong and distinctive cultural element. This year the two disciplines, culture and fashion are merged, making “Arona is fashionable 2013” a brand which will offer a great show incorporating cultural and commercial life. The main objective of “Arona is in fashion” is to foster and promote trade, business and the cultural activity of the municipality and so features various exhibitions covering specific principles: • Posibilitar the public exhibition of the collections of all shops in the municipality. • Dinamizar shopping areas of the municipality. • Increase sales in businesses in the municipality. • Potentiate cultural expression within the fashion world. • Consolidar “Arona is in fashion” as its own brand. “Arona is fashion 2013” will involve various businesses from the municipality who have expressed an interest in

being involved and meet the established criteria. Catwalks will take place on 19th and 20th of April at the La Esplanade de la Casa del Mar in Los Cristianos. On Friday 19th the start is scheduled for 9.00pm, on Saturday 20th there are two catwalks scheduled; from 6.00pm and from 9.00pm onwards In the break between the two catwalk sessions, on Saturday, there will be an exhibition featuring hairdressers and beauty clinics. In addition to the catwalks, “Arona is fashionable” there will be further activities promoting different the exhibition: • There will be simultaneous promotional videos which will feature images of the shopping areas of the town accompanied by musical performances, a parade of models, etc. The leading character of this

spot will be Eloisa González who is godmother of “Arona is fashion 2013”. • Antique cars and yet more models will cover key areas of the municipality promoting the shows on both days. • Mini parades are scheduled in popular areas to advertise “Arona is fashionable 2013”. • There will be an information stand to provide people with information about the areas covering both cultural and commercial information. The stand will be located on the promenade close to the old pier of los Cristianos on Friday and Saturday. • In the showroom shop owners show their products, catalogues and give information about their store during the catwalks. For more information call 922 761 600

The general public will no longer be able to use it without paying for a sunbed, and anyone who just wants to put down a towel will have to use the non-reserved part of the beach. These areas are expected to become rather packed in the height of summer, and criticism of the council’s move is widespread. Despite such criticism, however, signs in both Spanish and English will soon bear witness to the privileged section reserved for those who are prepared to pay for sunbeds, and expressly prohibit leaving a towel or other belongings on the beach. Arona says the service is profitable, raising 1.3 million Euros a year for the concession less just 110,000 paid to Costas. That’s good for the council, of course, but not so good for the many people who actually want to use the beaches without being charged for the privilege.

Missing

The family of José Manuel Rodríguez González, aged 49, are desperate for news of his whereabouts after he went missing last Saturday in the hills around El Tanque. Sr Rodríguez has a broken hip and is on medication. He was last seen wearing just his underwear.

The Guardia Civil have suspended active pursuit, but research is still on-going. So far the search has included fire support staff from Anaga (AEA), the Red Cross, a group of emergency and rescue (GES), in

addition to local police and agents of the Civil Guard, which took part with units from mountain, canines and helicopter rescue divisions, but have so far failed to reveal any trace of the missing man. Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the Guardia Civil.

Adeje Ayuntamiento says that it will continue to prioritize upmarket and niche tourism by developing standards for walkers in the municipality with the announcement, by environment councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, that the four routes of the Red de Senderos de Adeje (walking routes network) now have trilingual signage providing a range of information in Spanish, English and German. The routes are La Quinta-Aserradero-Ifonche; La QuintaBoca del Paso-Adeje; Adeje-Boca del Paso-Ifonche; and el Camino de la Virgen. Sra Rivero Vargas explained that more routes will follow, but that these have been chosen because of their incredible beauty and resulting immense popularity with both residents and tourists. A 66-year-old woman was seriously injured after being stabbed during a robbery last weekend. Emergency services received reports of two hooded men staging an assault on a jeweller in Avenida Santa Cruz de Tenerife in San Isidro. Police and ambulance attended the scene, and after paramedics had treated the woman at the scene, she was transferred to Hospitén Sur where she was said to be suffering from serious stab wounds in her thigh. The Guardia Civil is in charge of the investigation. The assailants of the Ceila jewellers are said to have had stockings over their faces, and the victim was actually the shop’s owner; she was threatened and, when resisted, was stabbed and the robbers then fled with two Mercadona carrier bags full of jewellery and watches. Two men in a nearby bar were witnesses and attempted to stop the attack by closing the shop door and trapping the men inside. This had the unfortunate result of making the thieves grab the woman and hold her as hostage and threaten to hurt her further if they weren’t allowed out. The threat, together with the sight of blood all over the floor from the wound already inflicted, persuaded the have-a-go heroes to back off. All that is currently known of the robbers is that one had long hair and the other was of medium height, and that they got away in a Opel Kadett or similar vehicle. A man has been seriously injured after being stabbed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. According to the Coordinating Centre for security and emergencies (Cecoes), the incident occurred shortly before six o’clock on Sunday morning, when they were alerted of a 50-year-old man said to have been stabbed in the Avenida Marítima, by the Cabildo de Tenerife. Activated emergency staff assessed and attended to the victim, who was moved by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria (HUNSC) with a serious stab wound to the chest. The municipality of Guía de Isora is to have a second golf course to complement the Abama course. Mayor Pedro Martín didn’t confirm which part of the area is to be developed, though he hinted that it would be land that is currently agricultural, but confirmed that investors are already interested in the project. Local water supplies would not be endangered, said the mayor, who noted that the drafts allowed for desalinated sea water to keep the course green. Sr Martìn said that Guía de Isora’s tourism development would not necessarily be in the form of further construction, but that a second golf course would be appropriate for the upmarket developments like the 5* Abama and Melía hotels. Quality, not quantity, is the key for Guía de Isora, said Mayor Martín.

ho says the Press is good for nothing? Last week during my week’s break from the Tw and singing down at Vivo I got a chance to be a genuine hero to a young boy in a lot of pain mainly thanks to my day job of being a reporter!

I’d better explain, a few weeks back following the storm that hit the archipelago I noticed, whilst walking my dog, hundreds of dead or dying jellyfish had been washed up on Palm Mar beach. Sensing a scoop I took

a dozen shots with my camera then headed home and with a bit of research, care of google, wrote an article for the paper. Fast Forward to last weekend and I was slowly strolling barefoot along the sand on Playa la Troya, Las Americas when suddenly a boy of 4-6 years of age came screaming past me from the shallows. His mum was running towards him laughing so I thought nothing more of it - until I noticed the purplish inflated bladder of a Portuguese Man ‘O’ War by his feet. It was considerably larger than the ones I’d seen after the storm and very much alive and I could see the welts beginning to

rise on his foot as he bellowed in pain. At this point I don’t think his mother had realised, so I pointed to the sting and told her in English and Spanish that he needed a doctor but soon realised she was Russian and understood neither!! I wondered if I should try to ease his suffering with urine (this doesn’t always work but the uric acid can sometimes neutralise some of the pain caused by the sting) but imagining explaining what you were doing with the language barrier and the fact she still wasn’t really aware of what was wrong! By this time she had realised that a doctor’s attention was needed so I ripped out a page of my book and scribbled down the name of the offending critter and wrote the word picadura - sting in Spanish, then indicated she should head toward the first aid huts at the opposite end of the beach. She wandered off and I realised immediately that she still had no idea

where she was going, at this moment I cursed the fact that the footwear I needed to put back on would take 15 minutes to lace-14 years on the island and my idea of beach footwear is hiking boots!! Braving the volcanic black sand’s searing heat I pranced painfully after her!! 10 minutes and 2 blistered soles later the poor little lad was in the capable hands of the Red Cross and lifeguards were scouring the tideline for any more of the nasty buggers. Although Man ‘o’ War stings can actually cause organ failure and even death, I’m sure he was just very frightened and sore but thanks to my new role as a reporter I recognised the cause of the problem and knew exactly what to do..... Of course I’d never compare myself to another famous mild mannered reporter who works for a newspaper but also save lives-I’m far too modest for that!

Giant Wasp Nest In La Gomera

5

A wasp nest measuring nearly 22 feet has been discovered in an abandoned house in La Gomera. Experts say the massive nest, which is home to millions of insects, was built by wasps from nearby Africa. The 21foot 9-inch wasp nest was found in the hallway of the house in San Sebastián.

Police were alerted to the giant wasp nest when neighbours living close to the house noticed something was wrong. When they investigated, they found the house was overrun with wasps, possibly numbering in the millions. On entering the empty home, the officials were shocked to find a seven meter tall wasp nest over run with wasps. The police are

trying to find the owner. The nest took up an entire floor, leaving officials wondering how to get rid of the millions of stinging insects. The nest is so large that officials think it will beat New Zealand as the holder of the largest recorded nest in history. The current Guinness World record holder was a giant wasp nest found on a

farm near Auckland in 1963, which measured more than 12 feet long, 5 feet in diameter, and about 18 feet in circumference. Although the New Zealand wasp nest was made of wood scrapings that the insects chewed up to create a paper mache material, it was so heavy that it fell out of a tree and broke in two on the

Debbie Strikes A Pose For Glory

By Colin Kirby

In 24 years Debbie Gilbey has always excelled in sport and fitness challenges, now she is facing her biggest test as the only Brit in the Bikini section of the Canarian Body Building Championships in Arafo on 4 May. Her strong will and dedication will be tested in this leap into the unknown and she’s hoping a few sponsors can give her that little extra push. Starting out in trampolining and gym competitions in her native London, Debbie moved onto hurdling at 300 and 800 metres, an unusual combination of distances that showed her versatility and took her onto the international scene. “I was in my mid teens and went to Maccabi, Israel for the JCCB games, they are second only to the Olympics. After getting injured I came home and qualified as a sports youth worker a year early at 15, I did some work as a lifeguard and then headed off to Cyprus for a three month intensive sports training course.” London offered a good career path and brought Debbie home: “I got a job at Slim Jims fitness studio in the city during the boom days when it was full of bankers and high flyers. I learned spinning and body pump and later when the re-

cession kicked in I went to India back packing and studied yoga in a temple that was tough with a strict diet and 5am starts.” Moving to Tenerife in 2010 Debbie has built a wide range of fitness courses including her new Beach Body hours from 10.30 am at Los Cristianos. From November last year Debbie started building up to the AEFF Championships in Arafo. “On top of teaching eight classes a week I have been doing weights and running. This is going to be very different for me, I’m used to events where there is a clear goal or finish line but this time I’m at the mercy of the judges.” There’s a lot to pull together for this challenge. “Everything from my muscle definition to my walk has to be just right, I have had to get new high heels and local designer, Indiana Mc-

Donough, is making me a new bikini. Then there is hair and eye make up, even the self tan has to be the correct colour and applied correctly so it would be great if anyone can help me in advance or on the day, I’m confident but a little nervous.” This could be the start of a bigger adventure, the winner of the Canarian event goes on to the Spanish Championships in Valencia and after that there is the World Championships in Turkey. Arafo is up the east coast just over half way to Santa Cruz and the competition starts with the weigh in and preliminaries in the Maximal Gym at 10.30am and the main event is in the Auditorio Juan Carlos from 5pm, tickets are 8 euros. If you want to help Debbie you can reach her on 664 576 779 or d.gilbeypt@gmail. com

ground. The one found in La Gomera is believed to be even bigger. Experts believe it was built by an African species of wasp that migrated close to 70 miles to the island. The types of wasp normally in the area usually live in gardens, and don’t built nests as

large as the one found in the home. Another gigantic wasp nest was found a few years ago in a pub in Southampton, England. Though it measured 6 feet 5 inches and was home to up to 500,000 wasps. A typical wasp nest will contain between 4,000 and 5,000

wasps, according to experts. Some of the larger colonies can number in the tens of thousands of wasps, though it is rare for the nests to grow much larger than that. Officials said they blocked off the house, but still haven’t worked out how to deal with the giant wasp nest.

New Kids Book From Tenerife Author

Author of Kindle bestseller More Ketchup than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman (currently number one in Travel Writing on Kindle UK) has stepped into the world of children’s writing with the publication of his new ebook, Scaredy Cats.

“I wanted to surprise my two children, Molly Blue (10) and Sam (8), with a book they could download on their tablets, so set to with a simple picture book featuring cute cats,” said Tenerife resident, Joe. “They both gave it 10 out of 10 so fortunately it passed the test... even though they might be a bit biased.” Published under the pseudonym of Jonty Cook, Scaredy Cats tells the story of 12 kittens playing in a gar-

The Plight Of Linda Sue, Nobody’s Dog As we at Live Arico PAWS are in close contact with other animal welfare associations, we were recently made aware of a very sad case. An 11-year-old dog called Linda Sue had lived almost all her life alone, in an empty property with a garden near Santa Cruz, her only human contact with a kind neighbour who fed her daily for 10 years. But poor Linda Sue had a mammary tumour, which had grown over the past year to enormous proportions, until it hung like a rugby ball from her lower abdomen.

The Association Sano y Asalvo were made aware but had two problems – how to finance her obviously urgent operation and where to put her afterwards. As we had money in the pot from the sponsored half marathon, 1,104 Euros to be exact, we agreed to help with the former, and Alice and Mark from Poochies Pet Hotel offered a place to recuperate.

With everything in place Sano y Asalvo rescued her from the empty property and she was taken to Hospivet Sur in Las Chafiras, where both they and we have open accounts. We all agreed she was the saddest looking dog we had ever seen, nobody’s dog for almost all her

solitary life. Her initial blood tests, paid for by Sano y Asalvo were actually not too bad, and heart worm negative, a huge bonus. However, subsequent X rays revealed a deeper problem – secondary tumours in the lungs, and a worry that she would not survive the operation to re-

Help for the Arona Life Guards And Sebastian

The plight of the Arona lifeguards has been in the public eye a lot recently, and it would appear there is much support within the ex-pat community. It was suggested to Steve Sands of Live Arico PAWS that maybe they could donate some dog food to the lifeguard’s dog Sebastian during this time of obvious hardship. The LAP committee

move the mammary tumour. What could we do? We arranged a second opinion, just to be 100% sure. All vets agreed, Linda Sue had only 3 – 6 months to live. Although the news was devastating, all of us felt that to improve the quality of her last months, the tumour should be re-

moved. Had she died on the operating table then, nothing ventured, nothing gained, and at least something had been done for her. So last week, with so many of our fingers crossed, the operation was done at Hospivet Sur, and the horrendous 850 gram cancerous tumour

was cut away. She came round, but a sudden drop in temperature meant she had to be wrapped in warm blankets. Since then, she continues to improve. Lylyam and Nazaret from Sano y Asalvo have fallen in love with her and in the few next days are going to take her back to Santa Cruz where they will care for her, so Poochies Pet Hotel wasn’t needed in the end, although we are extremely grateful for the offer. As you will see from the before and after photos, already she looks like a different dog and the 214 Euros we paid for her surgery is worth every cent, just to make her last few months as pleasant as can be. She deserves that after a lifetime of neglect. Some things are priceless, and we at Live Arico PAWS feel privileged to have been able to help. Sano y Asalvo are using a photo of the removed tumour as part of a campaign to highlight the importance of sterilization as a means of reducing the risk of mammary tumours in female dogs. Join us On Facebook – Live Arico Tenerife http://twitter.com/live_ arico http://www.livearico.org

Steve made contact with Verónica Rodríguez Rodríguez, spokesperson for the lifeguards and also owner of Sebastian the dog. It was discovered that due to the financial hardship being suffered, Sebastian had fallen behind with his yearly injections, so Live Arico PAWS immediately made plans to get Veronica and Sebastian to visit Dr Gilbert, Centro Veterinario Suarez Cuchi, Playa De Las Americas and

paid for the required injections to get Sebastian up to date. After 10 days of collecting on Saturday 13th April, Steve Sands, Siobhan Ferguson (Live Arico) and Marjan took the food to the Lifeguard Station on Las Vistas Beach, for the guys to distribute between themselves. All in all it was a great occasion, the lifeguards were extremely grateful for the donations, and to the team

who arranged it all. It was also fantastic to see the generosity of the public who quite clearly appreciate the plight of the lifeguards and their dedication to providing a service in the face of adversity. Special thanks also go to Andrea Silver of Studio Five for collecting food at her Hair Salon, Elaine Bishop Rose, Andrew Blake and Sharon Edens for their generous donations.

agreed wholeheartedly, but felt the best idea would be to collect food for the cash strapped life guards too, and from that a plan was formed.

Steve got in touch with Marjan Howard (Balú Family Restaurant / Bar, San Telmo, Los Cristianos) and told her of the idea, and as a supporter of the lifeguards plight she agreed to help by being a collection point for dried and tinned foods. The LAP charity shops were also food collection points. With the plan in place,

Another good day was had at Los Palos Golf Club for the Charity Fun Golf.

Newcomer De Bel Karol won nearest the pin for the gents and then went on to win the day with partner Peter Cook In second place came John McCabe and Tony Capaldi and third were Sean Bible and Jim Wilson. Sadly, yet again, the ladies failed to find the 8th green. The booby prize was a shared item between, Frank Moss, Darren Kemp, John Bentley and Jenny Messham. The next competition is on May 12th and anyone wishing to play should contact Clive on 922 797 640.

Soul in the Sun 2013

It seems like only yesterday that they were here for their winter break, once again, Vivo were delighted to welcome back old friends Soul In The Sun to our venue, for the seventh time, although this was the 20th time that they have been to Tenerife, and they obviously feel that they have now found the perfect club. As organiser Eddy says: “It has two

large open air areas, plus lots of room inside to sit, and a nice size dance floor. The sound system is fantastic, and we have no problems with noise levels. We organise Soul music every night from 8pm till around 2 am and take over two rooms, the one inside has music on all day from 9 till 2am, and the outside terrace area from 8 till midnight”. “Our afternoon sessions are really popular: you can sit out in the sun, and enjoy a sangria (or two) with likeminded people, while listening to some great music. We always theme the af-

ternoon sessions, one day it might be 70’s & crossover, the next 60’s & R n B etc. And on the Monday we have our Fancy Dress All-Dayer, which is incredible. It is fantastic the effort that everyone puts into their costumes – even the bar staff get involved”. What is more all profits raised from sales of CD’s, car stickers, cloth badges, enamel badges and T shirts goes to Cancer Research. We at Vivo are looking forward to welcoming back our “Sunners” on November 1st 2013.

PoPE Francis has met with Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, the first official gathering between both these heads of state. They talked for about 30 minutes, and among the issues they discussed were Spain’s economic crisis and its high unemployment rate, which is especially affecting the youth.

Spain’s prime minister gave the Pope a duplicate book from Spain’s National Library as a gift He also gave the pontiff a jersey of Spain’s soccer team, as a joke, which was signed by all the players. The Pope happily received it, but defended his favourite team, from Argentina: “Thank you very much. If I would have known, I would have given you a ‘San Lorenzo’ jersey.” Rajoy thanked the Pope for everything the Church is doing, through institutions like Caritas, which help Spaniards get back on their

feet. They also talked about the collaboration of other European countries in managing the economic crisis. Rajoy’s wife told the Pope that she has family in Argentina: “They also have Italian roots. Oh, the mix of Argentinian blood.” The prime minister also invited the Pope to Spain, in 2014, the country will mark 500 years since the birth of St. Teresa of Jesus. After meeting with the Pope, Rajoy met with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Mainland News In Brief A sculpture at a Spanish art museum was damaged when an elderly woman tripped and fell onto the artwork. The sculpture, titled “Ghost Gu Coming Down the Mountain,” created by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei in collaboration with Romanian-American artist Serge Spitzer, consists of 96 aligned glass jars. The woman fell into the work at Andalusia’s Contemporary Arts Center in Seville, breaking one of the jars. Some of Ai Weiwei’s work is protected by security ropes and alarm systems, but the damaged sculpture was exhibited so that members of the public could walk around it and examine it more closely. The museum’s director had the room with the jars closed off after the accident and Ai Weiwei has yet to respond to the news about the damage to his work. Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Madrid last Sunday to demand the abdication of Spain’s scandal-hit monarchy. Waving thousands of red, gold and purple republican flags, the crowd chanted: “Tomorrow, Spain will be republican.” “Nobody elected the king,” said protester Veronica Ruiz. “We want a referendum. It would be the fair and democratic way to find out what the people want.” The protest was called to mark the anniversary of the country’s Second Republic, proclaimed on April 14, 1931, and which followed 40 years of dictatorship under General Francisco Franco. King Juan Carlos is credited with steering Spain to a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy following Franco’s death in 1975. But family scandals have undercut public confidence in the monarchy during a bruising recession. A fire in Bermeo, Spain, has destroyed nine homes and left 35 families homeless, officials said. There were no reports of injuries caused by the fire, which broke out in an abandoned house and spread to eight surrounding homes. Officials attributed the spread of the fire to strong winds in the area. Four streets were evacuated, displacing 35 families from their homes, they were given beds in a shelter for the night and have been moved to hotels and apartments offered by local residents who have second homes, council-owned property and the homes of friends, neighbours or other family members. Officials said the fire, the worst in the area in 30 years, is believed to have been started by an electrical defect. Spain’s crude steel output for 2012 was 13.6 million tonnes, down by 12% from the previous year. According to the country’s Steel Companies Union, this output number represents a consecutive year of poor performance, after a reported drop of 5.1% 2011. However, the crude steel production in the first two months this year has improved to -6% and -2% respectively. In terms of the product range, long products had a moderate drop of 8% that is much better than flat product’s drop of 21%, mainly contributed by exportation market. As for the apparent steel consumption in 2012 it was dropped 19% and the total sales revenue of UNESID’s members totalled 11.1 billion euros which represents decrease of 12.6%. A Spanish court has sentenced popular Spanish folk singer Isabel Pantoja to two years in jail after convicting her of money laundering. Pantoja is not likely to go to jail, as first sentences of two years or less are generally suspended in Spain. The Malaga city court also fined her 1.2 million euros. Pantoja was found guilty of laundering money for Julian Munoz, a former boyfriend and onetime mayor of the resort city of Marbella. Munoz, who was sentenced to seven years, ran a scheme of providing building permits in Marbella in return for bribes. Pantoja is a regular fixture in Spain’s gossip magazines and TV shows. She was married to the famous bullfighter Francisco “Paquirri” Rivera, who died in the bullring in 1984.

Orange To Offer New Fibre Service

France TelecomOrange España, the subsidiary in Spain of France Telecom, has introduced fibre to the home (FTTH) services near the La Vaguada shopping centre and a new set of fibre-based service tariffs. The new service, which costs 25.95 Euros per month, offers plenty of elements for eligible customers.

Customers will receive a service bundle that includes 100 Mbps speeds, unlimited national wireline voice calling, 1,000 minutes of wireless calls to national mobile numbers, and 300 minutes for calls to 60 international countries. A similar tariff is available with the same features at 25 Mbps for 15.95 Euros a month. After expanding its network to La Vaguada, Orange said that 40,000 homes in Madrid have access to its FTTH services, while passing

another 58,000 premises in Catalonia and Asturias. Orange España is an aggressive sales arm of FTTH. In March it announced a 1 billion Euros partnership with Vodafone Spain to build a joint FTTH network covering 50 of Spain’s major cities. By March 2014, the joint fibre network will be available to 800,000

premises, which will rise to 3 million by September 2015 and 6 million by 2017. Although Spain’s FTTH market is still brand new, the number of accounts is rising. Spain’s telecom regulator Comisión del Mercado de las Telecomunicaciones (CMT) reported 53.6% of the 42,380 new broadband subscriptions

added in December were FTTH. France Telecom-Orange and Vodafone will see plenty of competition from Spain’s Telefonica. According to reports, the company will shortly be offering consumers a 100 Mbps FTTH offer for 30 Euros a month for the first year.

Guess What Country Has The Most Pot-Smoking Kids?? If you were going to answer Mexico, Colombia or Bolivia where the majority of drugs are from you would be wrong, they didn’t even make it on the list. Surprisingly it is Canada.

UNICEF has released its “Report Card 11” which tracks the well-being of children in ‘rich nations’ or in the industrialized world. The report also looks at high risk behaviours amongst youngsters. Out of 29 industrialized countries studied the report found 28% of Canadian children between the ages of 11to-15 years old are smoking marijuana. Spain came in third place with 24.06% of children report having smoked the drug in the last year while the U.S. came in fifth place. In spite of its economic woes Spain

maintains high rates of preschool enrolment rates, participation in higher education and found to provide an overall safe environment for its children. The report found collaboration between drug policies and drug use, the more liberal the drug policies the less was used amongst children. Portugal is a perfect example with a low rate of pot use amongst youngsters at 10.5% helped with the fact that marijuana smoking is not illegal. In spite of all this the UNICEF report discovered that in general when looking at the ‘behaviours and risks’ of children, there is good news. Fewer children are smoking, drinking and getting pregnant. However, there is some bad news, most countries report low levels of exercise and an increase in child obesity.

Inflation Drops Spanish inflation in March fell to its lowest level since July, as price rises slowed on the back of a drop in consumer spending and lower fuel costs. Consumer prices rose 2.4% year-on-year in March, according to data from the National Statistics Institute, compared with 2.8% in February. “We expect the moderation in prices to continue over the coming months,” Economy Secretary Fernando Jimenez Latorre said at a conference on the data. The consumer price index rose to 3.4% in September after the government increased value-added taxes by three percentage points as part of austerity measures to decrease its public deficit, one of the highest in the euro zone. According to the final price data, Spanish European Unionharmonised prices rose 2.6% from a year earlier, down from 2.9% in February. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, was 2.3% year on year, unchanged from the previous year.

Wind Farms success

ACCoRDInG to the Spanish association of wind power sector entrepreneurs AEE, between 2008 and 2012, wind farms in Spain produced a total 203,375 Gwh of electricity - 46.5% of the electricity generated under the special regime concerning small or renewable energy facilities. however, wind farms collected only 21.4% of the incentives under the regime.

The calculations were made on the basis of data published by Spain’s energy regulator Comision Nacional de la Energia (CNE). The association reminded that in the debate about costs of the electricity system in the country, the incentives under the special regime are considered as one of the factors that contribute the most to the so-called tariff deficit, or the difference between the costs that the utilities make to supply electricity and the regulated tariffs end-consumers pay. According to AEE, the first mistake is the

identification of the incentives with the generation of the tariff deficit, which is a result of the political decisions not to raise the electricity prices. The second mistake is the consideration that the special regime is exclusively composed of renewable energies, whereas it includes also technologies that burn non-renewable resources, among them the co-generation. The association pointed out that the wind power sector is characterised by its maturity, low costs and contribution to the energy independence of Spain.

ThE Spanish government and the European Commission (EC) have reached an agreement over the increase of Spain’s deficit target according to local media.

According to the Catalonian News Agency, the EC accepted to increase the deficit target for 2013 between “one and one-and-ahalf points,” while assuring the government will “share” this margin with regional governments. The statements were made during the Eurogroup meeting in Dublin. If the agreement is confirmed, Spain will have more time to meet the deficit target of 3% by 2016, instead of the current 2014. Meanwhile, the 2013 deficit target would be

5.5 or 6%. On April 26, the Spanish government are due to announce a new program of fiscal consolidation. Most of the measures included have already been approved by the EC and the European Central Bank (ECB). The Bank of Spain has also published new data showing the debt owed by the Spanish banks to the ECB fell by 35% in March to 260 billion euros (340 billion U.S. dollars) from 271.8 billion euros in February.

new Tiles For Cruz Mentor Dies new Orleans

BIGAS Luna, the iconoclastic film director who discovered Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, died on Saturday at his home in Tarragona, Spain. he was 67. Spain’s Academy for Cinematography Arts and Sciences announced the death. According to reports he died of leukemia.

oVER 100 Spaniards from Talavera de la Reina gathered on the second floor of the Cabildo to present the city with four new street signs to replace old ceramic tiles that have decorated Jackson Square since Spanish rule. “It is with great appreciation that the City of new orleans accepts this generous gift,” said C. Scott hutcheson, Advisor to the Mayor for Cultural Development.

Sponsored by the Spanish firm Plus Ultra Insurance Company, the ceramic street signs aim to preserve the long, historical connection between Spain and its onetime territory, New Orleans. “That is our goal, unity. Always unity,” said Plus Ultra President Floret Hillarie. “Because that is what the world needs to today.” Spain ruled New Orleans between two periods of French rule from 1762-1803.

Much of the iconic French Quarter architecture that forms the City’s identity with L’Hexagone was actually built by the Spanish. “New Orleans has long benefitted from its long, cultural heritage,” said Hutcheson, reading from a statement prepared by Mayor Mitch. “This serves as a reminder of the important international ties that our city enjoys with Spain.” In keeping with the authenticity of the tiles, Plus Ultra made the new signs

in the same factory in Talavera as the original tiles from 1959. As a token of the city’s appreciation, Hutcheson presented Hillarie and the mayor of Talavera, Gonzalo J. Lago Viguera, with two keys to the city, as well as a couple of new books for their library. The new tiles will be installed in the coming weeks. The city is also working with French Quarter property owners who wish to acquire new tiles from the company, the City said.

Mr. Luna was in a crop of film makers whose work came to the fore after Francisco Franco’s death in 1975, reviv¬ing a long-dormant cinematic scene. His work was noted for its outlandishly inventive treatment of sexual relations in liberated Spain, but it also offered broad social commentary. He was influenced by surrealist artists, including close friend Salvador Dali. His most successful movie was “Jamon Jamon,” which translates as “Ham Ham.” Released in most European countries and the United States in 1992, it won a Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. It introduced Cruz to movie audiences, including director Pedro Almodovar, who subsequently used her in many films. The title comes from the hams that hang in Spanish restaurants, and stores, and the movie tells of a complicated intergenerational sexual tale set in a

small town. Roger Ebert, writing in the Chicago SunTimes, called it “a throwback to the days when directors took crazy chances, counting on their audience to keep up with them.” At the time Mr. Luna called the movie “a portrait of everything I like, love, and hate about Spain.” The newspaper Le Figaro praised it as “a truly Spanish film with sun, sex, provocation, and no small dose of the irrational.” Mr. Luna’s film, “The Ages of Lulu” (1990), about a woman’s sexual

awakening, featured Bardem as a corrupt gay man, in his first credited movie role. Two years later, in “Jamon Jamon,” he solidified his image as the embodiment of machismo. Speaking after the announcement of Luna’s death, Bardem thanked the director for casting choices that had the effect of introducing him to Cruz, whom he married in 2010. He also expressed gratitude “for a career I never dreamed I could have.”

Lock up Your sTATe LOTTerY in Leon! sPAnisH AiD FunD TALKs

SPAIn has been in talks with banks about reviving a proposal to raise a syndicated loan via its state lottery company, a plan that was originally earmarked to help to finance an 18bn Euros aid fund for the country’s cash-strapped regions.

Spanish and international banks were asked for proposals on a 1.5bn Euros, five-year loan, as part of a book building exercise to discover appetite and potential pricing for the unusual sovereign debt raising. The deal will establish a borrowing track record for the lottery, Sociedad Estatal Loterias y Apuestas del Estado. Loterias is Spain’s most profitable publicly-owned company, with a 250-year operating history, and boasts the world’s biggest annual jackpot, “El Gordo” (the Fat One). The Spanish government has previously considered several capital markets options for raising funds via Loterias. Attempts to raise a bigger 6bn Euros loan for the lottery operator were postponed in December 2012 and plans to raise up to 7bn Euros from an IPO were cancelled a year earlier due to adverse market conditions as Greece’s financial crisis spread. The 6bn Euros loan had been intended to part-finance an 18bn Euros regional liquidity fund (FLA), along with an 8bn

Euros private placement provided by Spanish banks in mid-October and a 4bn Euros pay-out from the Treasury. But the government said it did not need the loan after pay-outs under the FLA were less than the 18bn Euros originally intended. The fund was integrated into the state’s regular funding programme in early 2013. Sources said last December that the loan could still be revisited in the second quarter of 2013. Conditions for peripheral borrowers have improved in the loan market since the start of the year and many top Spanish companies, including telecoms operator Telefonica, have been able to cut their borrowing cost. Spanish banks and international lenders asked for changes to the structure of the original loan proposals in October to include a bridge loan, and were waiting for a new term sheet to be issued in-

corporating their suggestions when the loan was put on hold. Loterias makes 3bn Euros a year in profit and is seen as a strong credit, but some banks have had reservations about its exposure to a recession-hit economy, lack of international business and limited ancillary business opportunities. Spanish banks are expected to provide a large share of the new loan, as some foreign lenders are limited on how much they can invest in Spain. “Spanish lending capacity will drive this deal. The loan will be priced up for Spanish banks, which are unfettered as far as country limits are concerned,” one banker said. Loterias have not ruled out another shorter-term bridge loan to the bond market aimed at international banks that are active in Spain. A quick bond market refinancing would help lenders with any difficulties about foreign exposure.

Texas Inferno U p to 15 people have been killed and hundreds injured after a huge explosion at a fertiliser plant in Texas. More than half of the town was evacuated following the blast in West, near Waco. The explosion - which the US geological survey registered a 2.1 magnitude - was so powerful that a nearby block of flats was destroyed and 130 residents of a local nursing home were injured. As many as 75 homes were damaged, as well as a local school. Local television originally said that 70 people had died but police have not given a

specific figure, instead saying that there are “several confirmed fatalities”. A number of people are also suffering from “respiratory distress due to chemical inhalation”. The explosion happened shortly before 8pm local time on Wednesday and could be heard as far away as 45 miles. A man filmed the initial fire, and captured the moment of the explosion on camera. His child is heard shouting: “Dad, I can’t hear, let’s get out of here. I can’t hear anything.”

The dad says simply: “Oh my god.” West’s mayor Tommy Muska, who is a local firefighter, said a number of his colleagues are unaccounted for. He told CNN: “It’s like a nuclear bomb went off.” Sergeant William Swanton, from Waco Police Department, said there were scenes of “extreme devastation”. “We’re going house to house, business to business, and we’re seeing quite a bit of devastation in the area of

the plant. They’re still pulling victims out, still bringing victims to triage. There may be firefighters that are unaccounted for and potentially a law enforcement officer as well.” He also said that a helicopter which was helping with the rescue operation was damaged. Texas Governor Rick Perry said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of West, and the first responders on the scene.” Police officers reportedly transported some of the injured to local hospitals in their patrol cars. As many as a dozen helicopters were sent to the West High School stadium where ambulances are waiting to transport victims to hospitals. Glenn Robinson, chief executive of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Centre, in Waco, told CNN his hospital had received 66 injured people for treatment, including 38 who were seriously hurt. He said the injuries included blast injuries, orthopaedic injuries, large wounds and a lot of lacera-

A woman has told how she helped clean the blood from local residents after the fertiliser plant explosion that rocked West, and was so powerful that it was felt for miles around. Local woman Julie Zhhirnik said: “I just hurt so much, and just seeing everything that I saw … it’s unexplainable. It’s just horrifying for everyone. I cared for a lot, I do home help and I care and I helped and cleaned a lot of residents’ blood and gave them blankets. I just tried to be there.” Erick Perez, 21, was playing basketball at a nearby school when the fire started. He and his friends thought nothing of it at first, but about half an hour later, the smoke changed colour. The blast threw him, his nephew to the ground, and showered the area with hot embers, shrapnel and debris. “The explosion was like nothtions and cuts. American Red Cross crews from across Texas are being sent to the site. The number of people arriving in the

ing I’ve ever seen before,” he said. “This town is hurt really bad.” One firefighter said: “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s part of the job, sometimes it makes you nervous, but you just have to overcome it for those less fortunate.” Resident Cheryl Marich, whose home was destroyed, said: “It knocked me down, it knocked me back. It was like the whole road just picked up.” Jason Shelton told the Dallas Morning News: “It exploded just like the Oklahoma City bomb. “I live about a thousand feet from it and it blew my screen door off and my back windows. There’s houses levelled that were right next to it.” Another witness, Bill Bohannan, told the Waco Tribune-Herald: “It knocked us into the car... Every house within about four blocks was blown apart.”

town offering assistance has become a logistical problem in itself, emergency workers say. The explosion came on the

eve of the 20th anniversary of the Waco siege - a deadly confrontation between federal authorities and heavily armed locals.

Brit Coach Hero

The British coach driver who died in an accident in France gave his passengers time to escape, by warning them they were about to crash. Maurice Wrightson, 64, from County Durham was taking 52 Britons home from a ski trip when his bus careered off the road before smashing into rocks and bursting into flames near the resort of Alpe d’Huez.

Police suspect a problem with the vehicle’s brakes meant Mr Wrighton lost control of the vehicle. The French Minister of Transport, Frédéric Cuvillier, praised Mr Wrightson’s courage. “You can’t call it a miracle because there is one dead and many wounded,” he said. “But the human toll could have been much heavier. “The driver’s courage saved many lives. All the testimonies of the people we have met have confirmed this. His attitude and his actions prevented an even worse situation.” UK travel organisation Abta said the passengers, who were all staff at a Brighton-based ski company, are now on their way home. They confirmed that there were two drivers and 51

passengers on board the coach, with the passengers having finished the ski season after working for Skibound Holidays in various resorts across the French Alps. It has since been said that Mr Wrightson, who worked for Stanley-based firm Classic Coaches, alerted his passengers to the imminent crash which allowed them to prepare to escape. Several passengers leapt from the burning wreckage out of windows. At least four people were said to have been seriously injured, and being treated in local hospitals. A helicopter was sent to the scene where fire fighters battled to put out the fire. A local police spokesman said: “The driver seems to have lost control on a steep bend in the road and his vehicle crashed into rocks. It burst into flames but everyone got out. Some passengers escaped by jumping out the windows.” TGM group which owns Classic Coaches confirmed in a statement: “Classic is a North East based company and the coach was being driven by a North East based driver.” The route, which has formed part of the Tour de France cycle race, is infamous for its treacherous hairpin bends.

Man Wrestles Snake To Death

Tommy Owen, 26, a tour guide, wrestled a 10ft python to death after “ambushing” it in front of a boat-load of tourists and performing what he described as “snake jujitsu”. The astonishing battle was captured on video by holidaymakers who watched as Mr Owen tackled the Burmese python, one of Florida’s most dangerous species.

He fought with the snake for several minutes before holding it still long enough for his partner, Warren Wortman, to cut its head off. They were travelling with the tourists when the snake was spotted: “They don’t belong here and that was literally running through my head. I just launched on it essentially, ambushed it like any other predator out here and just got it - had the best grip on it and never let go the entire tussle.” He added: “I didn’t even realise it was 10ft (3m), definitely thought it was over 6ft, definitely bigger than me. I didn’t realise it was three times the size of my arm. With a snake especially that big, you get one chance to grab it by the neck where

it doesn’t bite you. I had him, eventually exposed the neck to Warren. I want the head away. That’s the most dangerous part of the snake

so I exposed the neck and he was able to eventually make that cut.” Jack Shealy, owner of Everglades Adventure Tours, said that in the

Animals Killed In Zoo Fire

At least two meerkats and an otter were amongst the animals killed when fire ripped through an enclosure at a private zoo in near Edinburgh. Nine meerkats are missing, feared dead, after the blaze spread through the reptile house of the Five Sisters Zoo in Polbeath, West Lothian.

A male otter was in a neighbouring enclosure and was overcome by the effects of the fire nearby. Fire fighters managed to save a female otter in the same enclosure. Two meerkats had to be put down because of their injuries. Fire crews managed to rescue two dwarf West African crocodiles. The owners, staff and volunteers at the zoo were said to be distraught. Lesley Coupar, of marketing

and visitor services at the zoo, said: “We are devastated. It’s the worst nightmare. We’re in the business of rescuing animals, giving a safe haven to animals. Although the animals are wild, we know them intimately and it’s just such a tragedy. The owners are distraught, as are the staff and volunteers.” Described as “fierce”, the blaze took 11 fire engines and around 50 fire fighters several hours to bring it un-

generations his family has run the business he had never seen a python caught on camera: “Even rarer than encountering a snake is some-

der control. The alarm was raised at just before 4am on Sunday, by which time the tropical house was described as “well alight”. On Saturday, Ms Coupar had posted a message on the zoo’s website saying: “Hey! If you are not busy today, why not come and ‘hang’ out at the zoo, suns out and so are the animals :)” The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said it had been able to rescue some animals during the blaze. “Firefighters were able to help them rescue two dwarf crocodiles and an otter but sadly some animals have perished in the fierce fire,” it said. “Full details of the animals affected will not be available for some time until it is safe for zoo staff to access affected areas.” Officers described it as a “fierce fire” and a large metal-clad building appeared to have been gutted by the intense heat. The privately-owned nonprofit zoo was established in 2005 and is some 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh. According to the zoo’s website, it is “probably one of the few places in the world where you can see at close hand a West African dwarf crocodile”. It is home to some 130 species of animals, including meerkats, monkeys and assorted reptiles. The fire service added: “An investigation into the cause of the blaze will now take place.”

one jumping on it. Tommy’s always been a wild man.” Pythons are native to South East Asia. The first one was found in the Everglades National Park in 1979 and since then the population has boomed. Experts say that originally the Burmese pythons were found in the area because they were unwanted pets that were abandoned and found their way into the national park. Researchers at Virginia Tech University, Davidson College and the US Geological Survey reported that foxes and rabbits had disappeared from the area and that the numbers of raccoons and bobcats had dropped by as much as 99%. The snakes are blamed. Mr Owen believes he was performing a vital service by killing one. He said: “Unfortunately, that’s the problem. I had to make sure that I got this one because it’s one less out there - one less eating native species.” The snakes have become such a problem that this year authorities started a python-hunting competition with a $1,500 (£974) prize for the person bagging the most snakes and a $1,000 (£650) prize for the person capturing the largest one. The biggest python found in the national park was 17ft 6ins.

Poisoned Gift

Twenty employees of a company in Germany have been hospitalised in case sandwiches they were given as a gift have been poisoned. The suspicious sandwiches were left on the doorstep of a company near Vechta on Tuesday with a note saying they were a present.

Police say 25 employees of the company ate the sandwiches before someone noticed a strange substance on them. Emergency services were called and ambulances took those who had eaten the sandwiches for urgent treatment. The company and the identity of those who ate them have not been revealed. Local reports in Germany say the substance is suspected to be rat poison. Police said those in hospital were taken in as a precaution. They are in intensive care, according to local media. Area force spokesman Klaus Koesterke said Wednesday that so far none of them has shown symptoms of poisoning but they are not excluding the possibility of a slow-acting poison. Uneaten samples of the sandwiches have been sent to a Berlin laboratory for tests.

Marathon Murders

T

hE FBI has released the first pictures of the devices used in the twin blasts which hit the Boston Marathon on Monday. The images show twisted pieces of a metal container, wires, a battery and a small circuit board which exploded close to the finish line of the race. Another image shows a piece of charred

wire attached to a small box and a twisted metal lid with bolts. The FBI said that a pressure cooker may have been used to build the bombs, which were loaded with a deadly combination of nails, ball bearings and other metal packed around the explosive. It is thought the device may also have been hidden inside rucksacks placed on the ground

near the finish line.

Pressure cooker bombs have been used in attacks in Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Pakistan, according to a July 2010 FBI report. But the technique of making them is understood to be known to be a speciality of domestic US extremists. Richard DesLauriers, FBI agent in charge said the investigation to find those responsible would be worldwide: “We will go to the ends of the Earth to identify the subject or subjects who are responsible for this despicable crime.”

More than 1,000 officers are working on the investigation which agents have said is the largest the Boston bureau has ever worked on. Officials said that there was no indication that al Qaeda or other foreign extremist organisations were behind the attack, but they added the investigation was still at an early stage. It is not yet known what was used to set off the devices. The FBI has appealed for anyone who was in the area of the marathon or Boston airport in the last few days to send in any pictures they may have taken. They are already understood to be examining 6,000 hours-worth of CCTV footage from cameras in the area. Websites and newspapers were already publishing images which they claimed showed people suspected of carrying out the attacks or the devices. The FBI said it was looking at one sent to a local TV sta-

tion which appeared to show a bag next to a mailbox in the area where one of the bombs went off. Jason Pack, FBI spokesman in Boston, said: “We’re taking a look at hundreds of photos and that’s one of them.” Three people were killed and more than 170 others injured after the two explosions around four hours into the famous marathon. Two of those killed were Krystle Campbell, 29, and eight-yearold Martin Richard. The third was named later as Chinese graduate student Lu Lingzi, who was studying at Boston University. Nine children were among the injured, which were aged between two and 71. Nine children were among the injured, which were aged between two and 71. tails of a nine-year-old girl who lost her leg and a 10-year-old boy who suffered deep shrapnel wounds. George Velmahos, of Massachusetts General Hospital, said: “These bombs contained small metallic fragments more consistent with pellets and other small pieces of metal, but also spiked points that resembled nails without heads.” A total of 13 people have had to have limbs amputated and others are at risk of losing legs following the blasts. Seventeen remain in a critical condition. Police are said to have questioned a 20-year-old Saudi Arabian man who is being treated for injuries at a hospital in Boston. According to his flatmate, officers have searched his apartment in Revere.

Tribute

The mother of Krystle Campbell, 29, one of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings paid an emotional tribute to her daughter. Krystal had gone with her best friend to take a picture of her friend’s boyfriend crossing the finish line on Monday afternoon when the bombs went off.

Mother Patty Campbell said: “She was a wonderful person and everyone who knew her loved her. She was always smiling and was such a hard-worker in everything she did. This just doesn’t make any sense.”

British Nationals Involved

Although NO British nationals were injured in the terror attacks, around 347 of the 25,000 runners taking part in the race were British and several have spoken of their shock.

The Foreign Office tweeted: “We’re in close contact with local authorities in Boston. Not aware of any British nationals injured but will continue to monitor the situation.” One marathon runner from Cardiff told how she heard explosions moments after crossing the finish-

ing line. Still wearing her running gear, Sarah Morris, 46, said: “People were running towards us. There was a lot of blood and screaming.” Mrs Morris had just met up with her husband, Brian, when the explosions happened. He said: “There was a lot of panic. A man said a little boy had his leg blown off.” Abi Griffiths, from London, crossed the finishing line around 10 minutes before the explosions. She said she heard the blasts as she was collecting her bag: “The ground shook and immediately people sort of looked around - it was just too

Her parents had originally been told their daughter had been badly injured but would survive. However, doctors had confused Krystle with her friend Karen Rand, who was by chance carrying Krystle’s ID. Karen Rand had surgery to a badly injured leg. Father William Campbell Jr, 56, said: “We had the doctors come out and tell us everything they did (on the survivor) — and it wasn’t our daughter.” Boston University said the third victim was a graduate student who had been watching the race with friends at the finish line, close to the university. The Chinese consulate said the victim was an ex-

loud to be something that wasn’t serious. People kind of didn’t know what to do. Then all of a sudden it went into a state of chaos. Police were everywhere, we were being evacuated out of the area and it was really eerie. It was very, very scary and what should be a major celebration of the achievement of running 26.2 miles suddenly became a frightening scene.” She said that emergency services were already on hand to help anyone needing treatment after the race so were able to move into action quickly: “This is just such an awful scene to have happened,” Ms Griffiths continued. “It felt like it may have come from the inside of a shop. Suddenly you looked around and there was this cloud of smoke and then people went into gear. There were police everywhere.” Jez Hughes, a firefighter from Morley, west Yorkshire, was walking to the subway with his wife when they heard two explosions. He had been standing only 100 yards from the finish line with other competitors after completing his 10th marathon but walked around the corner to meet his wife: “While we were going to the subway we heard two explosions. I said straight away that sounds like a bomb and then we heard a second one. My wife is very shook up but we are out here until Thursday evening and no terrorists

change student, but has not identified them. The first victim to be identified, eight-year-old Martin Richard, was waiting with his family to give his father a hug at the finish line when he was killed. His sister Jane lost a leg and his mother Denise, 43, is understood to have undergone surgery for a serious head injury after they were also caught in the blast. President Obama will visit Boston on Thursday and will attend an interfaith service in memory of those killed. On Tuesday, he branded the bombings an act of terrorism, but said investigators were unsure whether they were carried out by a solo bomber or a group.

are going to spoil our day. Don’t let them get the better of you.” Darren Foy, 40, from Southampton, his wife Sandra and their two children, missed the explosions by just half an hour after he finished the marathon in three and a half hours. The chartered surveyor, who is chairman of the Lordshill Road Runners in Southampton and was competing in his fourth marathon, said: “There are reports here that the explosions came from a hotel at the finish line and I walked past there a few days ago to pick up my race number. It’s such a soft target. There are hundreds of thou-

sands spectators on the streets and 27,000 runners, so we got off lightly.” Mark Jenkin, a 34-year-old sports writer from Barnstaple in Devon, said the explosion had put the race into perspective. After finishing 138th in a time of 2 hours 24 minutes, he told his paper, the North Devon Journal: “It’s a beautiful spring afternoon in Boston. The people of the city put on a great race and it’s such a tragedy this has happened. I was feeling tired and a bit disappointed with my time in the race but all that seems irrelevant now. I just feel grateful to be ok.”

irish nanny Charged With Murdering Her Charge

AISLInG McCarthy Brady, accused of killing a baby in her care, has been charged with murder in the united States. A grand jury in Massachusetts also accused the Irish nanny of assault and battery on a child causing bodily injury.

ThEy are brand new to Tenerife; in fact, they are brand new to anywhere! you may not have heard of Bamboo towels before, but they are here and they are fabulous. Take an opportunity to discover the benefits of having bamboo bath towels. Picture yourself getting out of the bath or shower and wrapping yourself in pure heaven, in possibly the softest bath towel ever. Bamboo towels allow you to dry yourself off quickly due to their premium absorbent properties while also giving you the luxurious feeling of the softest fabric you have ever felt against your body. Pure cotton can often feel a bit rough to the touch; not only will you find that the towels are exceptionally soft and absorbent, but you will also find that they are durable for everyday use. They are also perfect for people who want to maintain a hygienic environment, because they are naturally odour resistant due to the fibres fast-drying characteristics. So say goodbye to that disgust-

ing mildew smell you get from other towels from time to time, and bathe in serenity. Bamboo fabric is created from the bamboo pulp and is 100% biodegradable. It is also anti-bacterial and hypo-allergenic; bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hyper-sensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.

Brady was arrested in January after the death of Rehma Sabir, who was admitted to hospital with severe head injuries on her first birthday, she died two days later. Brady had previously pleaded not guilty to assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury. She was jailed on $500,000 bail (£325,000) while authorities, who said they expected to file a murder charge, awaited autopsy results. Defense lawyer Melinda Thompson had protested the high bail and said Brady was “an innocent person sitting in jail”. State police said in court documents that a pillow, a blanket and baby wipes stained with blood were found in the baby’s bedroom.

Authorities have accused Brady of “violently injuring” the baby, causing her death. According to authorities a neighbour reported hearing the baby crying for nearly an hour on her birthday, followed by more intense crying, but knocks on the family’s door went unanswered. In February, a judge ruled in Brady’s favour when her lawyer asked for the preservation of all records related to the baby’s travel from June 2012 until she died. That included who travelled with the baby, where the baby stayed and whether medical personnel examined her. The lawyer also asked

for a list of people who lived at or visited the baby’s home and for the family’s computer records. The defence claim the baby returned home malnourished after travelling overseas to Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and London. The baby’s parents, Nada Siddiqui and Sameer Sabir, told police Brady had been a nanny for their family for about six months. Immigration officials have said Brady had been living in the United States illegally since 2002, when she arrived from Ireland under a tourist program. She was only authorised to stay 90 days.

Measles Infections On The Rise

Decrease In MMR Jabs To Blame

Schools in South Wales are sending out letters of consent to parents so their children can be vaccinated against measles. So far there have been near 700 confirmed cases of the disease and that number is expected to rise - both in Wales and England. About 60 children have been admitted to hospital. According to experts, the peak of the epidemic will not be seen for nearly four weeks.

The rising number of infections has prompted fears that a youngster may die from the disease. Experts say that in the developed world around one in 1,000 cases of measles results in a fatality. About 2,000 pupils are expected to be given the MMR jab in schools in South Wales to try to slow down the spread of the epidemic, currently centred on Swansea. Experts believe there are around 40,000 children across Wales who have yet to be vaccinated. Dr Meirion Evans, of Public Health Wales, said that the number of cases could easily double and that low vaccination rates across the UK mean that no area in the

How To Avoid Spreading Measles

Public Health Wales has issued the following advice to avoid the spread of the disease:

• If your child is unwell and you suspect it is measles, contact your GP. Your child should not attend school or nursery for four days after the rash starts. • Telephone your GP surgery to inform them you or your child has a rash illness before attending, so that arrangements can be made in advance for minimising contact with other vulnerable patients. • Avoid going to A&E unless you are seriously ill, and if you do attend, telephone ahead to let them know you or your child may have measles. • Avoid contact with pregnant women, people with weak immune systems and babies who are too young to be vaccinated, as they are more vulnerable to infection and there are very few treatments available to help them if they do catch measles. • If any family members are pregnant, receiving chemotherapy, or aged under one, it is vital that all other family members are up to date with their MMR vaccinations. • Maternity wards, midwives and health visitors are being asked to share information with parents to encourage them to check the vaccination status of all children in the family to avoid further household spread among vulnerable groups. country was safe from an outbreak: “Across Wales as a whole there are many, many children who have not had their MMR – we estimate over 40,000 children across Wales. Nowhere in Wales is safe from measles and I think that is true of the UK as a whole.” Another immunisation expert, Dr David Elliman, warned that London and the north of England are most at risk. Experts believe the epidemic has arisen as a result of

an earlier low uptake of the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Many people are thought to have refused the vaccination for their children because of now disproven fears that the MMR vaccine could cause autism. Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the former doctor who caused the scare 15 years ago by linking the vaccine with autism, said ministers were putting the importance of their vaccination programme above the welfare of children.

Miss Russia Race Row

Newly-crowned Miss Russia has said she is still proud to represent her country, following racial slurs accusing her of not being Russian enough. Elmira Abdrazakova’s father is Tatar, one of Russia’s oldest ethnic minorities, and she was born in Kazakhstan, but she was brought up in Russia and considers herself thoroughly Russian, as do the authorities.

The 18-year-old has been criticised online and received so many vitriolic messages after winning the competition she was forced to temporarily close her social networking sites. One message, still posted on a Russian news site, describes her as an “ordinary Azeri parsley seller” and says the user would not even glance in her direction. Another says she is “an ordinary market stall worker” and

would be considered “a real beauty among sheep”. Elmira said she had been shocked to read the messages: “The nationality question - I don’t really understand it, I don’t understand why men would write to a young girl offensive things about her nationality. It humiliates first of all not me, but those people who write it. It was bizarre for me when men were writing things like that to me, I was surprised we have people of that sort here.” Ms Abdrazakova comes from a small coal-mining town in Siberia and she says she only entered the competition to get the chance to try new experiences and visit Moscow, and that she never dreamed she had a chance of winning. She now hopes to inspire other young girls and to prove that you can achieve success in Russia without a wealthy background. She explained: “For many teenage girls Miss Russia will become a

But a Department for Health spokesman denied his claims, insisting that “Dr Andrew Wakefield’s claims are completely incorrect”. Immunisation advice from the Department has always kept the interests of patients paramount. weekends and schools will continue being targeted this week as officials try to prevent the epidemic spreading further. Professor David Salisbury, director of immunisation at the Department of Health, said: “Our immunisation coverage rates, currently, are extremely high, 95% of children are being vaccinated in this country. About the situation in Wales, he said: “That is a historic problem, the legacy of bizarre suggestions about vaccines and autism from 15

years ago, that’s not the situation currently.” Typical symptoms of measles include fever, cough, conjunctivitis and a rash. Complications are common even in healthy people, and can include ear infections, vomiting and diarrhoea, pneumonia, meningitis and serious eye disorders. Before the introduction of the MMR jab in 1988, about half a million children caught measles each year in the UK. Approximately 100 of those died.

She will now go on to compete for Russia at the Miss World contest. Ms Abdrazakova said it was a great honour, and that she would try to represent her country as well as she could, even if not everyone in that country believes she truly represents them.

Flooding insurance Worries Continue

robbery evidence swallowed

PEoPLE whose homes were devastated by flooding fear they will be unable to get insurance in future as talks between the Government and insurers have so far failed to reach an agreement.

By law, insurers are required to provide cover at reasonable rates provided the Government continues to strengthen flood defences, but this agreement, known as the Statement of Principles, is due to expire in June this year. In St Asaph in North Wales more than 400 homes were flooded when the River Elwy burst its banks last November. The majority of people have still been unable to return to their houses. John Wynn Jones who is a local councillor and whose own home was flooded said: “What we are finding is that because people are so concerned about getting insurance, as well as clearing up after the floods themselves, people are actually considering not moving back into their homes. They don’t want to get back into their properties and then find out they can’t get insurance or the premiums are now so high they can’t afford it. There’s one lady who was insured and ... they’ve told her they won’t be able to renew her policy. When she’s questioned it, they’ve told her ‘you no longer fulfil our criteria’. It hasn’t been

explained to her why but she says the only thing that’s changed is she has now been flooded. “Another resident has had to shop around. Her existing premium had been £200 a year and the best deal she can get now is £1,200 a year. Someone else was told they’d only get a policy with a £10,000 excess. People are desperate to have the cover but a lot of people are saying they don’t have the money to pay so they’ll end up living in uninsured properties.” Head of property at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), Aidan Kerr, said: “We continue discussions with Government on the model we have developed

to safeguard the availability and affordability of flood insurance for those at high risk. With flooding the biggest natural risk the UK faces, it is important we have consensus on managing the risk going forward, which includes sustained and targeted flood defence investment and sensible planning decisions.” A spokesperson for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said: “We want to get an agreement on insurance that provides a lasting solution and secures affordability and availability of flood insurance for policy holders. Constructive negotiations are on-going and Government is meeting with the ABI regularly.”

PoLICE say a man accused of robbing a jewellers and making off with a $3,200 diamond ring swallowed the sparkler.

Authority’s claim X-rays show a 14-karat, whitegold ring with princess-cut diamonds in the stomach of 52-year-old Ronald Perley. According to police, Perley walked into Bellman’s Jewellers in Manchester, New Hampshire asking to see engagement rings, but when a salesperson brought out a ring, he is alleged to have popped it into his mouth and attempted to flee the store. When confronted he denied

swallowing the ring. Police obtained a search warrant and took Perley to Elliot Hospital, where X-rays told a different story. Perley is being held on charges of theft and falsifying physical evidence. His $50,000 bail includes recovery of the ring, which is still in his system.

Samsung Launches “Phablet”

Samsung has launched the largest smartphone so far a 6.3in device called the Galaxy Mega. The phone fits into the ‘phablet’ category - a cross between a phone and a tablet and is only slightly smaller than some dedicated tablets on the market such as Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Google’s Nexus 7.

The South Korean firm says the new product has “split screen capability”, suggesting two apps could be run side by side.

Samsung’s faith in even larger phones comes despite debate over the appeal and pocket-stretching practicality of such devices. Samsung claims the Galaxy Mega is “light and thin for incredible portability and easy, convenient mobile phone use”. Senior European editor at Engadget, Sharif Sakr, confirmed that the phone was likely to be a success, but that its large footprint could be difficult to handle in some situations: “The absolute, final, logical maximum for how big a smartphone can be has already been exceeded so many times in the past two years that it’s impossible to

dismiss. If the new phone is thin and lightweight ... then its overall size shouldn’t be too impractical - except perhaps for those who often use their phone one-handed while walking or standing in a train carriage. The fact is there’s a good-sized population of us-

Twitter Music App Launch

The buzz is building about social media giant Twitter’s expected launch of a new music app this weekend. The news comes as key “influencers” apparently received access ahead of a public roll-out next week.

Tech site AllThingsD said the music service, originally planned for a Friday launch, may now be launched this weekend at the Coachella music arts and festival at Indio, California. The festival includes performances by Britain’s Blur, Stone Roses, James McCartney and Alt-J. Early on Saturday Wiz Khalifa, with nearly 10 million follows, tweeted: “Man this new Twitter music app is insane!” On Thursday Ryan Seacrest had tweeted: Playing with twitter’s new music app (yes it’s real!)..” He added: “Lovin the app … shows what artists are trending, also has up and coming artists…” The speculation surrounding the launch

comes after Twitter confirmed it had acquired the emerging music software firm We Are Hunted. The San Francisco-based music firm was launched in 2007 in Australia, and allows its users to follow emerging music trends and artists. Its software continuously updates lists of top music around the world. Neither company confirmed their plans, but the We Are Hunted site strongly hinted the deal means Twitter will be launching a long awaited music application. “There’s no question that Twitter and music go well together,” a statement posted on the wearehunted.com site said. The new music app is believed to rank music based on personalised trends and trigger points, including what Twitter accounts are followed. The AllThingsD report said users will be able to listen to clips of music from inside the app, using third-party services and watch music videos from Vevo, which is operated by Universal Music and Sony.

ers who are happy to sacrifice portability in order to watch video or run games and apps on a huge screen.” Chinese company Huawei previously made the world’s biggest smartphone screen with its 6.1in Ascend Mate. The Galaxy Mega, which is

due to go on sale in May, will also be available with a slightly smaller 5.8in screen. Both phones feature an eight megapixel camera, although the larger size has a faster 1.7Ghz dual core processor instead of 1.4Ghz. Apple’s iPhone - the main

rival to Samsung - features a 4in screen but a larger version is rumoured for the US company’s next iteration, expected this summer. Between them, the two technology firms own 71.4% of the worldwide smartphone market, with LG coming third.

Budget Airline Plane Misses Runway

Indonesian air crash investigators are trying to determine what caused a new passenger jet to miss a runway while landing in Bali and crash into the sea. The Boeing 737-800 Lion Air plane overshot the runway on the resort island and plunged into shallow water near the airport boundary.

All 101 passengers and seven crew members escaped, although up to 45 people suffered injuries. Some were forced to swim to safety while others waited on the wings of the twin-engine jet to be rescued by boat. Transportation Ministry spokesman Bambang Ervan said the National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC) is examining the wreckage. He said aviation authorities have recovered the flight data recorder from the aircraft. Local fisherman Fendi Yono said: “I saw two planes approaching the runway. The first one landed smoothly while the second plane went very slowly (before it crashed into the sea), probably be-

cause the weather was foggy at the time.” The fuselage of the recently purchased plane broke up during the crash. Subsequent waves hitting the plane completely severed the rear of the aircraft from the main body, causing it to partially submerge. Survivor Santi Widiastuti said: “I don’t know how this accident happened. I just heard a notification that the aircraft would be landing soon. Not long after that notice, I heard a loud noise like a plane crashing into something. Suddenly, from under the deck, water began to enter the plane. All happened so fast.” Lion Air began operating in 2000 with just one aircraft in

its fleet. It quickly expanded operations to more than 36 locations in Indonesia. It also flies to foreign locations including Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam and used a fleet Boeing 737 aircraft. Last month Lion Air signed a £18bn deal with Airbus for 234 passenger jets and two years ago it signed a contract with Boeing for 230 planes. However, the rapidlyexpanding West Java-based budget air carrier is reportedly banned from US and European airspace due to safety concerns. Between 2004 and 2006, Lion Air suffered a series of six accidents, which all involved planes overshooting or missing the runway, although no one died in those incidents.

investigation into not-so-Free Apps For Kids

ThE office of Fair Trading (oFT) is investigating whether children were being unfairly pressured or encouraged to pay for content in free games, such as upgraded membership or virtual currency in forms including coins, gems or fruit, following concerns that users can run up huge costs.

The investigation will look into whether these games include “direct exhortations” to children to do something that will require making a purchase or to persuade their parents to do it for them. It will also consider whether the full cost of some of these games is made clear when they are downloaded or accessed. The OFT has written to companies who offer such games asking them for information on their marketing strategy for children. It is also asking parents and consumer groups for information about potentially misleading or commercially aggressive practices. OFT senior director for goods and consumer, Cavendish Elithorn, said: “We are concerned that children and their parents could be subject to unfair pressure to purchase when they are playing games they thought were free, but which can actually run up substantial costs. The OFT is not seeking to ban in-game purchases, but the games industry must ensure it is complying with the relevant regulations so that children

are protected. We are speaking to the industry and will take enforcement action if necessary.” The founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, Martin Lewis, said it was “disappointing” that apps aimed at children have been allowed to charge “ridiculous amounts” for extra features: “When games such as My Little Pony, which are obviously targeted at young children,

bait kids with £69 purchases of a ‘mountain of gems’, something is going wrong in the system. What’s really disappointing is it’s been allowed to get this far. Apple especially makes a play of only allowing approved apps in its store. So why does it allow games that can be targeted at young children to charge such ridiculous amounts for in-app purchases? As always, an OFT investigation, even if it does advise action, will take time. So the most important message meanwhile is to protect yourself.”

student Apps entrepreneurs

JoSh Gare, a university student has claimed he can make up to £2,000 per day developing apps in his spare time. he is just one of a growing number of young entrepreneurs cashing in on the popularity of apps for mobile devices.

The 20-year-old from Berkshire taught himself to write apps at the age of 16 after reading about the process. Some 2.5 million people around the world have now bought his creations from Apple’s App Store, including the emoticons app Emoji. He admits it is difficult to compete in the market, but says it is still a lot easier compared to some other business ventures: “I’m competing with Apple, Apple’s apps, EA, these huge companies. But if I was to say, start up a fizzy drink company, I wouldn’t be able to compete with Coca-Cola,” he said. Last month British 17-year-old Nick D’Aloisio made headlines after selling one of his apps to Yahoo! in a multimillion pound deal. The success stories come at a time when around one in five 16 to 25-year-olds in the UK are unemployed. In 2008, Apple’s App Store opened with around 500 apps. To-

day there are more than 800,000. Google, which sells android apps, Apple’s rival operating system, has over 700,000 in its Play Store. But just as hype around the internet led to the dot-com boom and subsequent bust, critics fear the new money in the ‘app economy’ could be a signal that we are in an ‘app bubble’. Eden Zello, consumer analyst at Ovum, suggests keen youngsters should not give up the day job or quit university just yet. “It’s every would-be developer’s dream to come up with the next Angry Birds or to have their application acquired by an internet giant like Yahoo but the reality is, for every Angry Birds, there are dozens and dozens of applications that disappear without trace,” he said.

MoneySavingExpert.com said case studies reported on its forum included a seven-year-old who received a £69.99 bill on the College Girl app, a parent who had no idea their five-year-old had spent £65 on in-app purchases and a child who spent £80 on the Tiny Pets app. Last month, Apple agreed pay out around £66m ($100m) to settle a lawsuit which claimed children were improperly charged while

playing iPad and iPhone games. It was alleged that poor safeguards meant kids were easily able to buy extra features for the free games without their parents’ knowledge or permission. The company agreed to give a £3.30 ($5) credit to an estimated 23 million people who were affected. However, if parents can show they were charged more than £20 ($30) then cash refunds will be offered.

Kingston stars With Branagh

ACTRESS Alex Kingston, best known for her role in ER, will play Lady Macbeth opposite Sir Kenneth Branagh in his new production.

Kingston, who also plays River Song in Doctor Who, will appear in the play, which marks Sir Kenneth’s return to Shakespeare after more than a decade, and is being staged in a deconsecrated church. Kingstons previous roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company include Hero in Much Ado About Nothing, Cordelia

in King Lear and Jaquenetta in Love’s Labour’s Lost. She also played Desdemona in Othello for Birmingham Rep and Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. Sir Kenneth last appeared in one of the Bard’s plays in Richard III at the Sheffield Crucible in 2002. He has brought a number of Shakespeare’s plays to the big screen, most memorably Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing, in which he played Benedict opposite Emma Thompson’s Beatrice.

The couple later married but divorced in 1995. His last adaptation was As You Like It in 2006. The sell-out production, which is part of this year’s Manchester International Festival, will also be shown on a big screen in the city centre. Other performers announced for the festival include Massive Attack, Maxine Peake and The xx. The festival, which runs from July 4 to 21, has previously attracted huge names including Bjork and Damon Albarn.

Mother Poisons Kardashan 4-Year-Old Daughter in Divorce Trial

A FouR-yEAR-oLD girl is in a serious condition in an Australian hospital after allegedly being given anticancer drugs bought on the internet by her mother. The child was said to be previously healthy before being allegedly poisoned by chemotherapy medicines over a 10-month period.

Her 22-year-old mother had apparently been posting messages on a Facebook page in an attempt to draw sympathy for her daughter’s plight. “I have come to realise that my life and my children’s life was never meant to be easy,” she posted earlier this month. “Someone somewhere is testing us so greatly. My faith is somewhat shaken but I know after shattering into a million pieces, we as a family will pick ourselves up and try to fit these broken pieces back together.” Among the numerous updates was one posting saying: “I feel like I can’t breathe my heart is shattered.”

KIM Kardashian and her ex-husband have been given a second chance to settle their divorce case. Superior Court Judge hank Goldberg has set a mandatory settlement conference for April 19 to try and resolve the longrunning dispute. The couple had been married for 72 days.

The Facebook page also showed where readers could donate cash or toys to the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons. It also featured dozens of photographs of the sick child, many taken on hospital wards. The page had more than 8,000 members of the public, many of whom have now turned against the mother online. The change in attitude has prompted the girl’s grandfather to urge for calm. “Can I ask you save the hate and turn all your focus to posi-

tive prayerful thoughts for our gorgeous baby, number one priority is to get her well,” he wrote. “She’s sick guys and regardless of how she got there we need to get her back so much more than you wonderful people can know. The hate isn’t going to make her better prayers and positive energy and thoughts will.” The mother, who has been charged with grievous bodily harm, has appeared in a Brisbane court. She is due back in court on May 20.

Basketball player Humphries failed to attend a court hearing last week about the case, but Kardashian was there surrounded by heavy security. The US reality star filed for divorce in October 2011 after Humphries, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, claimed the marriage should be annulled based on fraud but has not yet set out the specifics of his claim. His ex-wife, who is now pregnant with rapper Kanye West’s child, is asking the judge for a traditional divorce. A trial, due to start on May 6 if they cannot settle before then, would be a stage for ugly revelations. Both sides have to testify at the trial, which would focus on their relationship and whether anything was staged for the TV show “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”. The judge also set a hearing for whether Humphries should be fined about his nonappearance at the mandatory settlement talks. Had the NBA player been in court, it would have been the first time the pair had

seen each other since their split. The couple married in August 2011 after a whirlwind romance played out largely in front of the cameras. Their lavish wedding ceremony was filmed and aired as a twohour special programme and reportedly cost over 10 million Euros. Kardashian, along with her two sisters, star in a number of reality shows based on their lives as entrepreneurs. They are the daughters of the late attorney Robert Kardashian - who famously represented OJ Simpson in his 1995 murder trial - and business manager Kris Jenner. Jenner is now married to US Olympic gold medallist Bruce Jenner.

outh Korean rapper Psy has revealed his follow-up to the global smash Gangnam Style, and it has already has had over 18million YouTube views. The 35-yearold was performing his latest single “Gentleman” at a stadium concert in Seoul last Saturday, which was streamed live on YouTube. Fans were asked to wear white for the performance, which was a sell-out with 50,000 people in the audience. It was streamed live so that the dance video could be seen by fans across the globe in the hope it will spark a new viral hit. It was the YouTube video of Gangnam Style, and in particular Psy’s signature horseriding dance, that pushed him to global stardom last year. A satire of the luxury lifestyle of Seoul’s Gangnam district, it is now the mostwatched YouTube video of all time, registering more than 1.5billion views since it debuted in July. The song - a satire of a self-proclaimed “gentleman” trying to woo women at a party - contains more English lyrics than Gangnam Style in a nod to the singer’s newfound global audience. “Let me tell you about myself. I’m such a charmer with guts, vigour and humour,” Psy sings in Korean before launching into

eo. As well as the 18.9million people who have watched since Saturday, 170,000 had made comments and several people had posted reaction videos or alternative versions. Gangnam Style success has been boosted by the flash mob phenomenon which oc-

Brosnan Backs Black Bond Pierce Brosnan has signalled his support for Colin Salmon to play the first black James Bond, saying it is “absolutely essential” he takes on the role of 007. Brosnan, who played the secret agent in four films, said there was no rush to replace Daniel Craig, who he said was “doing superbly well”. But Brosnan said Salmon, who starred with him in three of the films, would be the ideal replacement when Craig leaves. He said: “I’ve always thrown Colin Salmon’s name in the mix. He’s somebody I have worked with closely over the years. He would be outstanding and I think it would be absolutely essential.” Salmon has starred as Charles Robinson in Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The

global dance craze upped the ante for Gentleman, and the 35-year-old Psy has made it clear he was aware of the high expectations. He expressed some concern about whether his follow up track will have any chance of repeating the success of his first. Ahead of the

unveiling, he told reporters: “Of course I feel more burden than before, because lots of people are watching. “(Today’s show) is a performance of thanks for the ‘Gangnam Style’ success.” The video for Gentleman, whose refrain is “I’m a motherfather gentleman”, features a fast, hip-swinging dance by Psy in his trademark sunglasses and a variety of jackets. The verses are accompanied by the rapper behaving rather rudely towards women which has led to fears it may spark copycat behaviour. Psy, graduated from Berklee College of Music in the United States but had a rocky decade in show business before Gangnam Style rocketed him to global fame. His debut 2001 album, Psy from the Psycho World, ran into trouble with the authorities for “inappropriate content” in the lead song, which was seen as sexually suggestive. He was also charged with possession of marijuana in 2002. Psy’s brash style - at Saturday’s concert, he danced to a Beyonce song in a skimpy bodysuit - contrasts sharply with the polished stars that dominate what is known as K-pop, pop music from South Korea. A music industry white paper published by the Korean Creative Content Agency said sales of K-pop outside Korea surged 135% in 2011 to $196 million. In 2006, overseas sales were worth $16.7 million.

Charlotte, who weighs just 5.7lb (2.6kg), is being cared for at Simpson’s Centre for Reproductive Health in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. Maria Wilson, chief midwife, said: “Baby Charlotte has had a good night and is doing well. Our staff are continuing to care for her and we hope the mum and baby can be reunited. I don’t want the mum to feel afraid of contacting us because we treat everything confidentially. I think

the things we would want to check are that she is not bleeding or she’s not got any infection or any problems post the birth of her baby that she needs assistance with.” Chief Inspector Richard Thomas said he is “greatly concerned” for the baby’s mother. “We would ask anyone who might know who the mother is to encourage her to see a doctor urgently,” he said.

Newborn Charlotte, a baby girl, believed to be only days old, has been found abandoned on a park bench.

World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002). The British actor is also known for his work in Resident Evil series and more recently the TV show Arrow. Speaking about his time as Bond, Brosnan said: “That was without a question one of the most rewarding roles. That character and the opportunities it gave one. That job is the gift that keeps giving because once you’re a Bond; you’re a Bond for life. It’s a small company of men now who have played the role and for me, it’s allowed me to create my own company to produce, and to step forth into the international market and have a profile. That’s a healthy thing for any actor - the more choices you have. Without a question, it was a significant part of my life and career, and is on-going in many respects.”

The tiny girl, named after the policewoman who took her to hospital, is said to be doing well after a passer-by spotted her in Hailesland Park in Edinburgh last week. Lawrence Liddell told Edinburgh Evening News: “We really couldn’t believe it when we found the baby. It was a really tiny newborn wrapped up in a blanket; she wasn’t wearing anything underneath. She wasn’t crying and she didn’t appear to be in any kind of distress. We think the mother must have wanted the child to be found judging by where she had left it.” Police are checking CCTV in a bid to trace the baby’s mother who medics suspect will require urgent medical attention.

FinAL gOODBYe T since that of the Queen Mother in 2002. Lady Thatcher had planned it to the last detail and at her express wish, her granddaughter Amanda read the first lesson. David Cameron read from the Gospel and the Bishop of London gave an address which deliberately steered clear of talking about her political legacy: “The storm of conflicting opinions centres on the Mrs Thatcher who became a symbolic figure - even an “ism”. Today the remains of the real Margaret Hilda Thatcher are here at her funeral service. Lying here, she is one of us, subject to the common destiny of all human beings. There is an important place for debating policies and legacy; for assessing the impact of political decisions on the everyday lives of individuals and communities. Parliament held a frank debate last week - but here and today is neither the time nor the place.” The ceremony followed a sombre procession through central London, which was on lockdown with 4,000 police officers on duty in case of any unrest. Many among those lining the streets appeared to be Thatcher supporters, although others booed and performed a silent protest as the coffin passed. Big Ben fell silent at 9.45am and will not chime again until 1pm, in a mark of respect from the institution that made Lady Thatcher’s name. Her coffin then left the Chapel of St Mary

ARonESS Thatcher was given a ceremonial funeral at St Paul’s Cathedral as Britain remembered a famous but divisive prime minister. And she had planned every last detail herself.

The Queen, which effectively made it a state event, joined dignitaries from around the world and all of Lady Thatcher’s successors as prime minister. It is the first time the monarch has attended the funeral service of a former prime minister since Sir Winston Churchill’s state ceremony in 1965. The Iron Lady was given full military honours, her coffin brought to St Paul’s on a gun carriage drawn by six black horses. Inside the famous church, over 2,300 guests paid tribute to the UK’s first female prime minister, led by the former politician’s children Mark and Carol and her two grandchildren. Sitting a few rows behind them among today’s parliamentarians was Chancellor George Osborne, who had tears running down his face during the ceremony. The service was conducted with more pomp and ceremony than any funeral seen in London

To The Iron Lady Anti Party Undercroft in Westminster, where it had rested overnight according to her wishes. People applauded as the hearse made its way past Parliament and Downing Street, which was the politician’s home for more than a decade. A hand-written card from her two children

placed in a single large white flower arrangement resting on the coffin read: “Beloved mother, always in our hearts”. Then transferred to a gun carriage outside St Clement Danes church, her coffin was escorted by hundreds of troops to St Paul’s for the

service. The 1.5ton carriage travelled at 70 steps per minute, the wheels had been changed from steel to rubber so that it ran more quietly along the road. More than 700 members of the armed forces took part in the event in recognition of Lady Thatcher’s achievements in the Falklands War. Security across the capital was tight but there appeared to be far smaller crowds than expected, with some areas where barriers were erected almost empty. Ahead of the service and amid anger at taxpayers picking up most of the funeral bill, David Cameron insisted it would be a “fitting tribute”. The Prime Minister said that by winning the big arguments, his predecessor had actually settled divisions and declared: “In a way, we are all Thatcherites now.” He added: “She was the first woman prime minister, she served for longer in the job that anyone for 150 years, she achieved some extraordinary things in her life.” Supporter John Loughrey, from Wandsworth, said: “She saved Britain. She gave my father the opportunity to buy his council house. We had all sorts of problems and Mrs Thatcher put it all back together again. We needed the Iron Lady.” Margaret Kittle, 79, had travelled all the way from Canada to pay her respects: “My family came to Churchill’s and I wanted to come to Maggie’s because they are the two greats of history. We will never see the likes of Mrs Thatcher again.” But student David Winslow, 22, was among the protesters who turned their backs as the coffin went past. “The message is that spending £10m on such a divisive figure in times of austerity, especially when austerity is being imposed on the poor, is wrong, especially when harm is being caused to the disabled and the NHS,” he said. There was also tension between supporters and protesters near the Royal Courts of Justice, where pensioner Phil Williams held a banner saying “Rest in Shame”.

Hundreds of people attended a ‘party’ in central London celebrating Baroness Thatcher’s death; after football fans voiced their anger at the former prime minister. Protesters in Trafalgar Square brought sparklers and party-poppers to the rainsoaked event, while others drank champagne. Those present also chanted slogans about Lady Thatcher. Members of the National Union of Mineworkers travelled to the capital from North East England, with others joining them from Scotland and Wales. UK Uncut members, protesting about welfare cuts, also joined the demonstration. There was a large police-presence at the event, with reports of minor scuffles between a handful of protesters and officers, however The Met Police reported only nine arrest. Among the crowds in Trafalgar Square was four-year-old Jack, who was stomping around shouting “Thatcher’s dead, Thatcher’s dead.” His father Howard Garrick, from Islington, north London, said: “This is about his future as well, not just the past,” he said. “He needs a grounding in life and to understand how we are not going to be made into wage slaves.” The party came after Lady Thatcher’s death was celebrated by Liverpool football club supporters, with a number of large banners and chants during their side’s game at Reading. Reading chairman John Madejski had previously called for a minute’s silence at the Premier League match in memory of the former prime minister, but the planned tribute was turned down by officials. Instead, there was a silence to mark the 24th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster, which killed 96 fans in 1989. Before the match fans also joined in chants against the former leader, whose role in the official response to the tragedy is still a source of anger for many. The Hillsborough Independent Panel report, published last autumn, revealed Lady Thatcher’s reluctance to endorse criticism of the police despite the government being aware of “damning” evidence of their role. Monday marked the first anniversary since an independent inquiry revealed the extent of a cover-up by South Yorkshire police that sought to blame Liverpool fans for the deaths.

iT’s A Yes TO KiDs?

SIMon Cowell has revealed that he wants to become a father and has not ruled out adoption. The 53-year-old TV mogul said he would prefer to have a daughter if he did have children.

Paris Jackson First interview 15-yEAR-oLD Paris Jackson has spoken about her “incredible” father, her desire for a normal childhood and her plans to go to medical school, and her hopes that the family home, neverland, will be restored for deprived children to enjoy.

Cowell, who is currently single, spoke out about the prospect of a family before his ITV show Britain’s Got Talent: “Would I like kids? If I knew I could be, and how could I put this delicately, faithful, then yes. I do like kids. I’m not sure I would be a good dad for the first six months or so but once they know who I am, I would like it. I definitely haven’t ruled out having children.” He added: “I think I’d rather have my own but then again I wouldn’t completely rule out adopting either. If I did have a child, I have to say I’d prefer a girl.” Cowell, who has built up a multi-million pound fortune

through shows including Pop Idol and X Factor, broke off his engagement to makeup artist Mezhgan Hussainy last year. He has since been linked to model Carmen Electra, who filled in as a guest judge on Britain’s Got Talent but split up after a few months. The TV producer is already godfather to the adopted children of the singer Sinitta, his close friend who he dated for many years. She has previously expressed doubt about him having a family of his own, saying: “I don’t imagine mini-Cowells. Maybe I can’t allow myself to. It’s too scary a thought.”

Along with her brothers Prince Michael, 16, and Blanket, 11, she lives in Calabasas, California, with their grandmother, Katherine. In her first newspaper interview, Paris said her father had “good energy” adding: “He was an incredible father. We all loved him to death.” She added: “He wanted the best for us. He always made sure we were healthy. He made sure we stuck to school.” Up until his death in June 2009 Paris and her brothers were rarely seen in public and wore masks when they were. Paris said: “He didn’t want anyone to see what we looked like. That way we could have what he didn’t, which was a

normal childhood.” The teenager, who is shortly due to give evidence in the wrongful death lawsuit filed by her grandmother against the concert promoter AEG, says she likes being at school after years of home tutoring: “I’m on a tight leash and I feel that if that leash was loosened a little bit I would definitely have a chance of a normal childhood ... I have friends who are completely normal ... they don’t even think of me as MJ’s kid.” Paris recently rekindled her relationship with her mother, Debbie Rowe, and spent her last birthday shopping with her in Hollywood. “When I’m with her we don’t really have security with us which is really nice,” said Paris. She reveals her love for music and talks of how her father taught her to dance but she dreams of being a surgeon. “I want to be an actress, but just throughout high school. Then I want to go to medical school and be a doctor specialising in heart surgery. I want to help people, that’s it.” Paris also says she plans

to have a tattoo as a tribute to her father, but only when she is old enough to do it without her disapproving grandmother’s permission. She treasures a note from

her father which expresses his undying love and she plans to have the words tattooed on her left wrist, with her grandma’s name on the right.

BeiBer TWiTTer sPAM sHAM!

GoRMLESS gangster Gopher Justin Beiber was exposed as a Twitter fake this week when it was announced by “socialbaker”, a website dedicated to identifying “fake spam accounts” by checking for genuine tweets that the numbers were bogus, Beiber twitter followers or “Beliebers” now number over 37 million but less than half of them are real followers - 53% are Spam.

The term Spam is used for any UCE (unsolicited commercial email) and gets its name from the luncheon meat, not because it’s fake meat and they are fake messages, but via a Famous 1970’s Monty Python

pletely useless, much in the same way that junk mail ruins online messaging. The website checks tweets for giveaway posts such as “diet”, “make money” and “work from home” and using this method can come up with a “real” follower total and if they look fake they’re counted as fake. This news bumps Beiber back to 2nd place in the “most followed on twitter” charts with 17.8 million actual followers - over a million less than former, and now reinstated No.1, Lady Gaga. I personally see this in a positive light, with poor education, illiteracy and low IQs a global problem, doesn’t this mean the world is 53% less stupid? I dunno I was never any good at maths!!

Ozzy sizzled But not separated

RoCK legend, reality star and infamous party animal ozzy osbourne used his Facebook page this week to publicly deny that his 31 year marriage to Sharon was heading for divorce.

The 64 year old Black Sabbath frontman used his Facebook status to set the record straight about his rock steady marriage but shocked his 8 million followers by admitting he had fallen off the wagon and had been hitting the booze and drugs once more. This was the status: “For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs. I was in a very dark place and was an a**hole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy

to say that I am now 44 days sober. Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I’m just trying to be a better person. I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my

insane behavior (sic) during this period.........and my fans. God Bless, Ozzy” The singer, who is arguably more famous for his hell-raising than his music, is currently on tour with Sabbath to promote their latest album “13”.

ThIS summer “Iron Man” fans in nagoya, Japan will get the chance to take the experience of seeing the 3rd movie of the series to the 4th dimension!!

CJ Group, a South Korean company, has announced that Iron Man 3 will be shown in “4DX”, a system that can

transmit 1000 different scents, move seats and unleash wind, mist, strobing and bubbles amongst many other effects on its unwitting audience!!! The company has already used the system in South Korea, Mexico and Hungary on films such as Avatar and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and plan to have the system, which re-

quires an extra digital track to program the effects onto, installed in 200 cinemas across the US by the end of 2013. Sounds amazing, however the toilet scenes from Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire (both Danny Boyle movies, maybe he’s got a poo fixation), may clear the theatre quicker than a Rob Schneider comedy!

REDoInE Faid, one of France’s most dangerous gangsters has escaped from jail after blasting through five doors with explosives and taking several wardens hostage. Police and helicopters are hunting the fugitive who is known for robbing vehicles carrying cash in transit.

State prosecutor Frederic Fevre said Faid was a “particularly dangerous prisoner” who was armed and still in possession of explosives. He said Faid, 40, held four hostages during the jail break in the northern town of Sequedin. One was released just outside the prison and another a few hundred metres away, before the final two were left along a road. The wardens were said to be extremely shocked, but safe. Faid later set his getaway car on fire, after abandoning it south of the city of Lille, and then got into a second vehicle which police are attempting to track.

France’s justice minister Christiane Taubira said Interpol had been called in to help find Faid and a Europewide warrant had been issued: “The hunt will initially focus on Belgium of course because we share a border but also extend to the entire Schengen area and beyond,” she told reporters in Sequedin. Wardens’ unions described the prison break as “an act of war” and argued the jail was inadequate for such dangerous convicts. Union official Etiene Dobremetz said Faid had received a visit from his wife earlier in the day. But the wife’s lawyer vehemently denied any suspicion of her involvement in the escape. Rose Lafont was visiting her son in prison at the time and described the chaos caused by Faid’s escape: “I thought my last hour had come,” she said. “Suddenly, everything started blowing up. The walls started shaking, as did the windows and the doors. I was really scared.” Faid co-wrote a book in 2009 following his release on parole after a decade in pris-

on for robbery. The novel was about his delinquent youth and life as a criminal in Paris’s crime-ridden suburbs. He said his life of crime was inspired by American films such as Scarface and Heat. Despite vowing he had turned his back on crime, Faid was suspected in 2010 of being the mastermind behind an armed robbery during which a young policewoman was killed in a shoot-out. He was returned to prison in 2011 for failing to comply with his parole conditions and was due to serve the remaining eight years of his original sentence.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Having A Say!

Each evening, when I leave my home in La Orotava to travel south for my shows at Vivo in Las Americas, I pass an Icon of the Island. I am not talking about Mount Teide or the tree of Drago. I am not remarking on the lava tunnels in Icod or the beauty of the Orotava valley.

When I start my journey, I look forward to seeing what is written on a piece of long noticeboard once I get onto the motorway. Someone has been “posting” messages on their land for a number of years and the sign is big enough to read from a great distance. You can see it easily from the motorway. I think that the British tend to think that oddballs or quirky people are unique to the British way. I disagree. I believe that people who are slightly “off the wall” exist is all countries and in all walks of life. This is certainly true about Spain. The sign has been gaining popularity over the internet and regularly quoted on Spanish

television. It is rarely political, but regularly topical. When the quotes aren’t topical they make you think. Here are a few of the comments that have appeared over the last year or so. I have translated them into English. 1. The only thing that interests me is everything! 2. You can leave it if you want! 3. Self Discipline 4. Don’t forget to hug your father 5. Don’t lie to me 6. Are you a victim? Or do you fight? 7. Saida, we are with you. (Referring to the young lady who was so terribly burned when wearing her carnival dress during the competition in Santa Cruz earlier this year) 8. There is much left for you to try! 9. Just because it is law, it doesn’t mean it is right. 10. The Bank La La and the forty thieves. These signs can be found on facebook. They are, of course, written in Spanish, but translate them in google and you will be able to enjoy the weekly comments. Search in

Kate Bush

Why on earth has Kate Bush received a CBE? During her long career, she has made 10 albums of music. Just ten! Many more talented and prolific artistes deserve an award. I just can’t get to grips with the reason for recognising the woman who had a handful of easily forgotten hits. The next thing on the horizon will be Sir Nik Kershaw or Lady Siouxsie Banshee.

Fame is a cocktail of talent and ambition mixed with a great big dollop of luck. Do we really need to give the people who have lived charmed lives another piece of the special pie? Aren’t there enough special people in the real world? People who save lives or care for others. Kate Bush becoming a CBE has really spoiled my day. I loved her. I bought her first two LPs. Her music was wonderful but it wasn’t “WOW” enough to warrant a royal approval over 30 years later.

facebook for El cartel de la autopista del norte and you will be able to keep yourself up to date with the signs. I love the idea that someone pops out in secret to put up a poster on the motorway.

I celebrate originality. The land is private and the poster isn’t breaking any laws. It is always inspirational. Please take a look. He can be found on the net under the name anoniman.

GOING TO MADRID

Whilst we have been away, I took a break in Madrid. I will give you some of the sordid details next issue, but the two days up to leaving were an absolute nightmare that I never want to live again.

My lovely friend was going to look after my baby (Cat). I took her to his apartment the day before we came away. Within two hours, she decided to jump from a fourth story balcony and disappeared. I spent half of the night calling out her name and offering food to her, to no avail. At 7 o clock the next morning, I was there again, practically all day, calling her and she didn’t come. There was no sign that she was there. I can’t tell you how terrible I felt. She was still missing when we set off for Madrid. We put posters everywhere around the area and all my friends were searching for her. I just wanted the phone to ring. I really didn’t want to be in Madrid, but everyone assured me that cats can take ages to calm down and come out of hiding. I have some very loyal friends and I knew that they would be looking for her. The flight was a hellish time, but the next morn-

ing I found out that she just walked right up to my friends and that she is now happy as Larry in his apartment. She was a rescued kitten of only 5 weeks when I got her from K9 almost nine years ago. I am lucky to have such good friends. They were out in force and the good wishes will not be forgotten. As I write this, I am day

four of my holiday in Madrid. A man just jumped on the underground train with a speaker and a microphone and sang My Way! I just had to give him some money. He actually made people smile. I love a bit of originality. Well done to him. What a shame more people can’t come up with their own ideas! I love it! See you when I get back!

rainbow’s end

A STREET crossing painted as a colourful rainbow to celebrate Sydney’s 35th Mardi Gras has been dug up in what the city’s mayor called an “aggressive act”. The crossing was painted in the heart of the city’s gay district and campaigners had asked for the popular street art to remain as a tourist attraction.

But now its stripes have been stripped away and covered with asphalt, on the orders of New South Wales Roads Minister Duncan Gay. He insisted the painted rainbow had to go because there was a safety risk as pedestrians sat or lay down on the crossing to have their photos taken. Supporters had hoped the crossing might one day reach the status of the Abbey Road zebra crossing in London made famous by the Beatles. Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the NSW government’s removal of the rainbow pedestrian crossing was an “aggressive act” against the community. Ms Moore said she had wanted to hold

talks with Mr Gay about the issue, but a road gang moved in without the city being notified. “I thought it was an unwarranted aggressive act

against the Sydney community,” she told a local radio station. In response, Mr Gay said Ms Moore was engaged in a

He said he had no option but to order the work in the interests of road safety. “The behaviour we have seen recorded by CCTV cameras, including people sitting and laying on the crossing, has set off alarm bells at the high risk of injuries and fatalities,” the minister said. Angry fans of the crossing made their own versions in the area using chalk, while others joined a Facebook page “Save the rainbow crossing”. Eden Dietrich said: “The grey men do it again. They have no idea about anything much except how to stop fun and colour.” “So sad and unfair,” posted Susana Moris.

Man Killed By Beaver

A FIShERMAn has been bitten to death by a beaver after trying to take its photograph. The unnamed man was on a fishing trip at Lake Shestakov in Belarus with two friends when they spotted the animal on the side of the road. he stopped so that he could take a picture but as he approached the beaver it pounced on him, biting him in the thigh.

His friends attempted to stop the flow of blood, but the animal’s bite had severed a main artery and the man, who came from Brest, bled to death. Beavers are the second largest rodents in the world and attacks are rare and, according to experts, animals that do go for humans are usually rabid. However, attacks are not unheard of. A video has been posted on YouTube showing a man in the Tver region, northwest of

Moscow, running away from a beaver who charged at him as he was filming in the area, and last year in the US two girls were mauled by a beaver in a lake in Virginia as they swam. They suffered serious bite and scratch injuries. There have also been reported attacks on a man in New York and an elderly woman in Washington. In 2003 in Belarus a farm manager and farm worker were bitten by a rabid beaver as they tried to chase it from a barn. They survived the attack.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

Exotic Insects of the Tenerife Garden adults look a bit like small dragonflies. They have banded bodies that are long and thin and they mostly fly at night. The larvae live in burrows in dry sandy soil. They get the name Ant Lion because they pounce on unsuspecting ants and other small insects that come within their reach. Speaking of dragonflies, there are several species that live in Tenerife and the Canary Islands. If we have a pool in the garden it is even more likely that we will see these beautiful insects because the females lay their eggs in fresh water and they young insects are known as nymphs. The largest and most spectacular species is the Emperor Dragonfly (Anax imperator). It is very common and the males are a bright blue while the females are a greenish colour.

Praying Mantis nymph

With its subtropical climate there are many interesting insects that can be seen in our gardens. Some of them are very big, some of them very small, some of them are very beautiful and others simply look really weird.

Blepharopsis mendica

There are a number of species of Praying Mantis on the island and one of the most commonly seen types is Blepharopsis mendica. The adult insects have spotted wings, reach a length of 6.8cm and have feathery antennae. They are quite often found in the drier parts of the south of Tenerife and so is the very strange looking species that is known to science as Hypsicorypha gracilis. It has wings too and a very thin and fragile looking body with a point on its head. This mantis is coloured a pale brownish colour and is ideally camouflaged when it is hiding in dried up vegetation. The Praying Mantis (Mantis religiosa), which can either be a shade of green or brown, is also found in some parts of Europe and Africa. Like other species of mantis it feeds on other insects and the female of

Hoverflies mating flowering plants and vegetables. Hoverfly larvae look like little green or brown slugs with a pointed head. They do a fantastic job in clearing aphids fast and will crawl around all over your plants looking for any they have missed. Adult hoverflies feed on nectar from flowers. They are definitely an insect we should encourage.

The Death’s Head Hawk Moth has been prominently featured by artists, such as in work by German illustrator Sulamith Wülfing, and also in films including Un Chien Andalou (by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali) and The Silence of the Lambs starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster. A picture of the adult moth with its wings extended was featured on the cover of the latter movie, although the weird skull-like pattern is actually an image of seven naked women posing in the shape of a skull and taken from an original work by Dali. Death’s Head Hawk Moths are also mentioned in Chapter 21 of Bram Stoker’s horror story Dracula, where the evil vampire Count has been sending these moths for Renfield to eat. this species has a reputation as a real insect femme fatale because she will eat the male who mates with her. All Praying Mantis species develop from nymphs which are similar to the adults in general form but have no wings and are smaller. The mantises have weird eyes that make them look like aliens and they will look straight at you. They are all harmless creatures though and are really good examples of insects that are beneficial to the gardener because they eat other species that may well be pests that eat our plants. The Ant Lion (Myrmeleon alternans) is another strange insect we may encounter in Tenerife. The

Ant Lion

Common Scarlet Darter The Common Scarlet Darter (Crocothemis erythraea) is another dragonfly that is often seen in Tenerife. The males have bright red bodies and the females are yellowish. Dragonflies feed on other flying insects and the nymphs will eat small fish, tadpoles or other aquatic creatures. A garden pond is an ideal habitat for them but they also live in reservoirs and irrigation tanks. Hoverflies hover and look like small wasps with their banded bodies. They are another example of insects which are a gardener’s friends. This is because the larvae eat aphids, those horrible little pests that suck the sap out of our prized

The most beautiful insect we might see flying in our gardens is the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus). It is unmistakeable with its reddish-orange wings that are veined with black and with white spots on the wing tips. The caterpillars are very colourful too and candy-striped with yellow, black and white. The adults will be attracted to a garden with plenty of flowers

but the females will be looking to see if you are growing any Scarlet Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica) because this is what they lay their eggs on. The massive larva of the Death’s Head hawk Moth (Atropos acherontia) are the size of a man’s finger and have a little spike on their tail-ends. These caterpillars can be yellow, green or brown. The yellow and green forms have stripes on their sides and are very attractive creatures. The brown caterpillar is ideally camouflaged to look like the brown twigs of bushes it is feeding on. They eat a variety of plants but are most often found on the Lantana (Lantana camara) in gardens and on Thornapple (Datura stramonium) in the wild. The adult moths can squeak, raid beehives for honey and have a skull-like marking that gives them their name. They are without a doubt one of the strangest insects found on Tenerife.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Aquarius 20 January to 18 February

You manage to say the most difficult things with wit, charm, and cheerfulness. It might be a good time to convince someone that you’re the right candidate for whatever you want to achieve. There’s a chance that you could be too assertive on Wednesday. If you don’t want to fall out with someone, think before you speak. The focus gradually shifts to home and family matters. If you feel like slowing down, recuperating, and recharging your batteries, this might be the best time.

Money Hungry Dog

wAynE Klinkel left his dog, Sundance, in his car with five $100 notes and a $1 bill while he and his wife stopped for dinner in Denver at Christmas. But while the Klinkels were enjoying their meal, Sundance was feasting on the cash. The 12-year-old golden retriever ate all of the notes - except the $1 bill.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

Whether you’re earning, spending, or investing money, this isn’t the week to make an impulsive move. Fresh possibilities are worth exploring, but you could be tempted by those small personal extravagances that can eat away at your wages. Consider the possibility of a budget. It might help you keep things under control. You’ll be more interested in communication and connecting later in the week. Contacting old and new friends could encourage a reunion that becomes a catalyst for fresh ideas.

Aries 21 March to 19 April

You’re innovative in your pursuits and eager to get ahead. Stepping on others’ toes might seem like a necessary evil to get where you want to go. At the same time you have the vision to see what can be achieved. Try not to be too pushy on Wednesday or you could lose out. The focus shifts to Taurus, and money matters might encourage the need for a more secure financial base. You could be in the mood to splurge on a few luxuries, too.

Taurus 20 April to 20 May

The reflective phase continues. A powerful dream may catch your attention. It could encourage you to change a course of action. Focusing on your heart’s desire may help you visualize it and so make it seem more accessible. You’ll get your sense of control back as Venus, the Sun, and Mars moves into Taurus. It’s time to take back the reins and focus on any projects that have been on the back burner. You may be self-absorbed, but in a healthy way.

Gemini 21 May to 21 June

There’s a friendly buzz in the air that suggests that optimism reigns on the social scene. It’s great to be with people and cooperate on projects or simply hang out together. But after so much activity, the pace begins to slow as planets move into Taurus and your spiritual zone. You’re entering the cycle of the year in which it’s time to relax, review your priorities, give yourself a chance to recharge your batteries, and get reacquainted with your body’s natural rhythms.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

It’s a good time to think about your career and advancing your goals. Concentrate on work and ambition and the obstacles barring achievement may fall away. On Wednesday you might have a strong desire to make headway on a goal you’re passionate about. Give it your all and you can make progress. Gradually, career issues give way to a desire for more social activity. The energy changes and you’ll want to connect. Think about moving in new circles and networking for greater success.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

Travel or study may be on your agenda, whether out of interest or because you want to increase your skill set. You seem to be searching for something and may feel restless as a result. One thing is for sure - moving outside your comfort zone could lead you on an adventure that opens new doors. Career matters become more important later in the week with a focus on securing your future and getting ahead in a job that provides a good living.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

Take it easy because emotions may dominate. You may fare better behind the scenes where you’re less likely to be involved in the cut and thrust of daily life. Although your career situation looks positive, tension could cause an outburst when you least expect or want it. Talk problems over with a friend at lunch and it might help you feel better. A desire to get away for a relaxing break should be acted upon during the second half of the week.

Libra 23 September to 23 October

If you need the agreement of your partner to proceed with anything that requires cooperation, you might have to tread with care. Asking later in the week rather than earlier may mean you have a better chance. Your sweetheart might need a lot of leeway and anything that threatens this could be rejected. You may find it easier to twist him or her around your finger when the focus shifts to soothing Taurus, especially if you offer to do a favor in return.

Scorpio 24 October to 21 November

You’ll be in a very feisty mood, especially when it comes to work or even working out. You might have a desire to stand out and perhaps prove something to yourself or others. You may be prepared to go to any lengths to be number one. Try not to tread on too many toes in the process, however. Partnerships gradually become more important as your social life seems to improve and you become more interested in cooperation rather than competition.

Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

Cultivating a taste for the novel or exotic in people and ideas may open you up to wonderful new experiences. The social side of your life is a mixed blessing. Prospects of fun could put you at odds with other interests that require your attention. This may be true later in the week when you’ll need to get back into your routines. Strangely enough, you might find those routines calming and pleasantly relaxing after all the coming and going and recent activity.

A determined Mr Klinkel said he wore rubber gloves and followed Sundance around the backyard as he went about his “business”. He said he collected fragments from the droppings, and his daughter, who he was visiting in Denver, later found more when the snow melted. Mr Klinkel, from the town of Helena, Colorado, washed and bleached the remnants of the bills and sent them taped together to the Treasury Department hoping to have them

replaced. That process can take up to two years, Mr Klinkel told local press: “Sundance may have eaten my money, but what he took he gives back in unconditional love,” he said, adding he was embarrassed by all the attention he had received. “I got a call today from a guy I knew 20 years ago and he said he hasn’t stopped laughing about it,” he said. Mr Klinkel said he does not carry a wallet on his chiropractor’s advice.

A PICTuRE has been released of a two-headed pig born in a village in China. The animal was photographed following its birth in Jiujiang, in east China’s Jiangxi province.

A local vet said the creature was suffering from a rare deformity known as polycephaly, and would find it difficult to survive, but the pigs owners have agreed not to slaughter it. Many different animals can be affected by the condition, in 2009, a snake with two heads was found in a drawer full of rubbish in the US, while a cat suffering the same deformity was born in Australia a year earlier.

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January

Due to a combination of drive and ambition, you may want to shore up your financial and career positions. However, the focus on home and family matters could make this difficult. Changes in the family dynamic or disruptions to family routines may set you back early in the week. The focus shifts to Taurus later, and then you’ll be more in line with your purpose. Creative thinking may help you come up with new, fresh ideas that could have a lucrative outcome.

Baileys and Chocolate Cheesecake Who can resist a slice of Bailey’s cheesecake? This is a great simple recipe with added chocolate for little extra texture. I like to use crushed Cadbury’s flakes instead of grated chocolate but that’s only a preference. Also I add 10ml of brandy or whiskey to the cheesecake mixture just to give it that extra little bite! – Delicious…….. Ingredients: 100g butter 250g digestive biscuits, crushed 600g Philadelphia cream cheese 25ml Baileys 100g icing sugar 300ml double cream, whipped 100g grated chocolate To Garnish: 200ml double cream, whipped Cocoa powder, to dust. Method: Melt the butter in a pan and add the crushed digestive biscuits. Mix well until the biscuits have absorbed all the butter. Remove from the heat and press into the bottom of a lined 18cm tin. Place in the refrigerator and allow to set for one hour. Lightly whip the cream cheese then beat in the Bailey’s and icing sugar. Fold in the whipped cream and grated chocolate. When smooth, spoon evenly onto the biscuits. Refrigerate and allow to set for a further two hours. Once set, remove and decorate with whipped cream and cocoa powder dusted over the top.

By T.J Smith

New Ford Fiesta ST The All new Range Rover Sport Ford has spent the past 30 years building fast Fiestas and based on that experience they have delivered a car that exceeds all expectations.

The all new Range Rover Sport was driven through New York City by the James Bond actor Daniel Craig. The British actor unveiled the new ultimate SUV to the world skilfully driving through the streets of the Big Apple before arriving to a packed crowd of celebrity guests on 8th Avenue where the vehicle was revealed for the first time.

Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern, said “the new Range Rover Sport is the ultimate luxury SUV. A new Range Rover Sport for a new era. Relevant, sustainable and utterly desirable. Alongside the all-new Range Rover, and the Range Rover Evoque, the new Range Rover Sport represents the third distinct product in Land Rover’s product revolution.” This fantastic new model will go on sale later this year there will be a choice of three equipment levels HSE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography Dynamic and an SE derivative available on TDV6 models from early 2014. An extensive choice of colours finishes and details will enable customers to create the ultimate bespoke SUV. The exterior of the new Range Rover Sport is fresher than the previous model with a sleek and contemporary appearance but still looking powerful and muscular. It is slightly longer than its predecessor and with a slightly longer wheelbase which improves the room inside for rear passengers. All-new Range Rover Sport customers will have a choice of two engines: a supercharged 5.0-litre 510PS V8 petrol engine and a 3.0-litre 292PS SDV6 diesel engine.

The line-up will be expanded in early 2014 by the addition of a 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 and high performance 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel engine. In addition, an innovative, high-efficiency diesel Hybrid model will be available to order in 2014. Every engine option is offered so there is something to suit everyone. All petrol and diesel engines in the new Range Rover Sport are paired with the advanced electronically controlled ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox and across the range acceleration times from 0-60mph start from just five seconds. The sporty and luxurious look continues inside the new Range Rover Sport, there are more luxurious soft touch surfaces around the cabin and occupants benefit from a wider cabin. There is also a new integrated third row of seating and occasional 5+2 seating can be specified. These powered seats leave a flat floor with no loss of boot space and are split 50/50. The sporting ambience of the interior continues with a smaller diameter, thicker steering wheel, vertical gear shifter, higher centre console, configurable mood lighting and more generous seat bolsters. New Enhanced Technologies This new model introduces a digital camera system which supports three driver assistance features that help deliver improved driver awareness: Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition and Automatic High Beam Assist. Another unique innovation on the Sport is the new Wade Sensing™ feature that provides ‘depth’ information when driving through water, made even more beneficial to the driver now that the Sport’s maximum wading depth has increased by 150mm over the previous model to 850mm.

There is also the option of a comprehensive connectivity package that enables customers to stay connected to their vehicle, business and family lives. ‘Connected car’ technology allows the driver to check the status of the vehicle via an App installed on their smartphone and also provides support features such as Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Emergency Call and Land Rover Assist Call.

Some have said that they think the front looks like an Aston Martin with it’s huge, black honeycomb front grille, but that’s where the similarities end. This three-door hot hatch looks mean, but understated with its twin exhaust and large rear spoiler. The colours unique to the ST are Spirit Blue, Molten Orange and Race Red and they all had many onlookers stopping and starring as we drove around the picturesque routes of the Gorges du Verdon. Even the convoy of Army trucks we were following at one point, had the soldiers nearly falling out the back to get a closer look. Camouflage this isn’t, as the Fiesta ST is one hell of a showstopper. The interior is kept simple, centre console is easy

Cars could be powered by coal in the future thanks to a revolutionary new process of extracting energy, Fox News has reported. But how? Energy has traditionally been farmed from coal by burning. Its power can then be used (say) as heat to warm buildings or steam to power pistons. But burning coal releases chemicals such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and most experts believe this is bad for the environment.

Such chemicals can be seen emerging from coal power stations. In contrast, scientists from Ohio State University in the United States have spent fifteen years (and several million dollars of government money) developing the “clean coal” technique. This - courtesy of iron-oxide pellets - releases energy from coal by heating it rather than burning. The reaction is then contained in a chamber from which pollutants cannot escape. The only waste products are water/ash and metal from the iron-oxide can be recycled. The process has worked in a small laboratory so there will now be more experiments at a far larger facility in Alabama.

to use and the partial leather Recaro seats are comfortable and as standard for the first time. A nice touch is the additional illuminated scuff plates. There are two trim levels, ST and ST2. The ST gets you a DAB Radio CD with SYNC, 17” alloy wheels, MyKey technology, Quickclear windscreen, Thatcham Cat 1 alarm, unique ST body styling kit and Recaro sports front seats with cloth trim. Thanks to its dynamic chassis and Ford’s Torque

Vectoring Control (eTVC), you can throw the ST into a corner and come out the other side without so much as a ‘where did my backend go’. This system provides slight braking force to the wheel when accelerating through a tight corner, so that more engine torque goes to the outside wheel providing additional traction, better grip and improved vehicle handling. Combine this with a three-mode Electronic Stability Control and it makes any drive fun and rewarding.

Implications Of Coal Powered Cars

Motorists would also need to accept the new fuel which is a big ask. Consider, after all, how negatively some motorists react to hybrid and electric vehicles such as the Toyota Prius and Nissan LEAF. Even if the fuel was fantastic in every way there would still be prejudice to overcome. To be popular, there would also have to be a national network of refuelling stations similar to today’s liquid based outlets. Without this the cars could be limited to very short journeys. Developing the fuel, the vehicles, the infrastructure and the marketing strategy would clearly cost billions so the challenge is immense. That said, ‘where there is a will there is a way’ – so watch this space.

So, let us assume these forthcoming tests will be successful. What would then need to happen before coal powered cars became common? First and foremost, the motor industry would need to be convinced there is enough black stuff in mines to make the fuel viable for the foreseeable future. There is, however, only a finite supply so this could be problematic. The technology would also have to be fitted to cars which would need to have reasonable performance, long term reliability, and sensible price tags. Repairs would have to be affordable too.

Saturday Farm ITV 1 - 08:30 - 09:25 Presented by father and son chefs Dick and James Strawbridge, and from Daylesford, an organic farm in the Cotswolds, the series will document events from the two thousand acres of countryside; home to cattle, turkeys, hens, five breeds of sheep, a market garden and a bakery, butchery and creamery. Giving viewers a taste of life on the farm, each episode will capture the bounty of the changing seasons with inspirational recipes and give a glimpse of rural life in all of its rich variety.

41

In programme one Dick gets to grips with day to day life at the farm, before heading off to feed the Gloucester Old Spot pigs, one breed of livestock that populates the farm. With spring in the air James gets stuck into lambing and cameras are on hand as he delivers his first lamb. Saturday Farm is as much about celebrating and cooking with seasonal ingredients as it is about life on the farm so back in the market garden, Dick finds out all about purple sprouting broccoli before cooking a classic beef olive followed by delicious apple cobbler, whilst James heads outdoors and gets cooking, producing potted leeks with tarragon flatbread.

Broadchurch ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Bloodied and dirty, Danny Latimer (oskar Mcnamara) has been found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff-face from where he may have fallen. whilst his death remains unresolved, the picturesque seaside town of Broadchurch is at the heart of a major police investigation and a national media frenzy. The sadness of losing a child consumes the family, Beth and Mark Latimer (Andrew Buchan and Jodie Whittaker), their daughter 15-year-old Chloe (Charlotte Beaumont) and Beth’s mum Liz (Susan Brown) as they attempt to cope with their grief, everyday normal life and the abruptness

of the unwarranted attention heaped upon them. Devastated by their loss, it’s the most stressful and emotional time in their lives as they struggle to relate to their friends, neighbours, the church, the press, and the police. David Tennant takes the role of DI Alec Hardy; an out-of-town, newly promoted police detective who takes the job local girl DS Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman) believes should have been hers. Ellie has to find reserves of patience and toughness to negotiate a professional relationship with the difficult and unyielding Hardy. Yet as the drama progresses, Hardy’s own secrets are laid bare.

BBC 3 - 21:00 - 22:00 Almost 10 years after the crash that left her paralysed, Sophie Morgan explores why road traffic collisions are the single biggest killer of young people in the uK, and meets people who, like her, have seen their lives transformed forever in just an instant.

As she talks to drivers whose actions have resulted in tragic accidents, and to victims and their families, she tries to understand why a fifth of new drivers will crash within a year of passing their test – and what can be done to

45

stop that. Does it mean driving qualifications are obtained too early, or too easily? With exclusive access to emergency services and high-profile stories, she follows a number of cases from the scene of the accident through to eventual recovery, or resolution in the courts, and spends an evening with new drivers whose love of speed has led them to risk their lives in illegal racing events. As this powerful film unfolds, Sophie also comes to terms with what happened in her own accident – for the first time discussing the events of that night with the people her own bad driving could have killed.

14-Year-Old WOWs PgA

FouRTEEn-yEAR-oLD Tianlang Guan survived an anxious second round wait at Augusta to become the youngest player ever to make the cut at a PGA Tour event.

On day two of The Masters, the Chinese player was punished with a one stroke penalty at the 17th hole after previously being warned about slow play on the 12th. He finished at three-over-par after a round of 75, but with an overall score of four-overpar once the penalty had been added, leaving him in danger of being more than ten shots off the lead and not making it into the weekend. It was only after the final group finished, which contained the eventual overnight leader Jason Day, that Guan was confirmed as being

among those making the cut. He said: “I played pretty good today. I know the rules pretty good. This is what they can do. This still is a wonderful experience for me.” Day carded a round of 68 to finish on sixunder-par, one shot clear of fellow Australian Mark Leishman and American veteran Fred Couples. Tiger Woods, who held a share of the lead for much of his second round, ended with two bogeys in his last four holes to finish on fourunder-par. The English challenge is being led by Lee Westwood who is also on four-under par, one shot better off than Justin Rose and David Lynn. Rory McIlroy goes into the weekend four shots off the pace on two-under-par.

Maradona Hoy is to retire Visits Castro SIX-TIME olympic gold medallist Sir Chris hoy has announced that he is retiring from competitive cycling with immediate effect.

Hoy told a press conference at Murrayfield that he had decided to end his magnificent career at the age of 37 rather than continue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The Scot retires as Britain’s greatest ever Olympian, two gold medals at London 2012 having taken him past Sir Steve Redgrave’s total of five. “I am officially announcing my retirement from international cycling,” said Hoy. “It’s a decision that I didn’t take lightly and something that I thought about very hard. “With the help of my wife, my family and my coaches, I’ve come to this decision,

ThE former President of Cuba Fidel Castro received a visit from Diego Armando Maradona, in havana, and reportedly the pair had a “lively and fruitful” meeting.

Castro and Maradona met last Saturday and the conversation between the two was a “fruitful exchange between two old friends”. Maradona arrived in Havana from Caracas, where he paid tribute to the deceased President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, and met with then-President in charge of the Government Nicolas Maduro, who won victory in the

presidential elections last Sunday. Since his first visit to Cuba in 1987 the soccer star has established a relationship with the Cuban leader, and in recent times had expressed his desire to visit it. Maradona has travelled several times to the island, where he was treated since January 2000 for his drug addiction at the international clinic “La Pedrera”. In other visits when he has previously met with the Cuban leader, he has given t-shirts like that used in his debut with Newell’s Old Boys Rosario with the number ten imprinted.. In addition to being a per-

sonal friend of Castro, Maradona is a great admirer of the Cuban revolution and has tattooed the faces of the Cuban leader, on a leg, and Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, on one of his arms. In recent weeks, 86-yearold Fidel Castro, removed from power since 2006, has been seen at some public events and, in addition to this meeting with Maradona, he recently visited a school in where he spent two hours talking to students and teachers. In February, the elder Cuban leader went in person to vote in the general election and also attended a session of the National Assembly.

and the reason for it is that I feel I’ve got every last ounce of effort and energy out of myself. “I made it to London and I was successful in London, but I don’t think people realise just how much that took out of me. To try and go on for another year, I think it would have been too much.

“I think it would have been one year too far and I didn’t want to just turn up, wave to the crowd and get the tracksuit. I wanted to be there to try and win a medal for Scotland. “Because I don’t feel like I can do that, I’d rather step aside and let someone else take my place.”

Ferrari Boss Seeks Qualifying Improvement For Bahrain Gp No stopping Vettel and Hamilton for the last seven races

Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali has called upon Ferrari to hit back in qualifying this weekend at Bahrain after seven consecutive pole positions for either Sebastian Vettel or Lewis Hamilton.

Although Fernando Alonso propelled himself to within a mere nine points of Vettel at the summit of the Drivers’ World Championship with a dominant victory in Shanghai on Sunday, qualifying remains a relative weakness in Ferrari’s otherwise formidable armoury. Alonso is yet to line up on the front row this season and last claimed pole position almost a year ago at the 2012 German GP. “It is clear that we are not at the level we should be in qualifying,” the Ferrari Team Principal ac-

knowledged. “We understand that some of our rivals are very, very strong and this is a target we need to achieve very soon in order to make sure that our potential during the race could be used in a much stronger way.” Last season, when Alonso’s qualifying struggles were even more pronounced, he was twice forced into first-lap retirement after lining up in the pack. However, it’s the clean-air advantage accrued from starting at the front of the grid that Domenicali is most concerned with. “If you start in the leading then for sure you can handle the tyres in a better way,” the Italian observed. According to Sky Bet, Alonso is only a 6/1 contender to claim pole position on Saturday, while teammate Felipe Massa is a 16/1 long shot to repeat his 2007 feat of starting from first place.

Salman Butt Says He Will Return To Cricket

Disgraced former Pakistan captain Salman Butt says he is planning to resume his cricket career when he has completed his ban from the sport.

However, Butt will have to wait for over two years at least after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected his appeal to have his suspension for spot-fixing reduced. The 28-year-old was given a ten-year ban, with five years suspended, by the ICC in 2011 for orchestrating a plot to deliberately bowl no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England. The bowlers involved, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, were also handed lengthy bans, and the CAS turned down Asif’s appeal against the verdict. Reacting to the decision to uphold his ban, Butt told reporters in Lahore: “I wasn’t more than 50 per cent sure that the decision would come in my favour, but still there was a hope that I would be able to reduce my ban. “But now there is no way, other than completing the rest of my ban. “I have already served two years and eight months and, after another two years and

I will be 30 when I serve the ban in two years’ time, so I don’t find any reason not to play cricket. “Obviously, it’s a struggling time, but it’s always great to rise after fighting with tough times.” Butt refused to speak about the spot-fixing alle-

gations themselves and dismissed the idea that the five years of his ban which were suspended might come into effect if he does not take part in an anti-corruption programme. “I am here to talk about the rejected appeal and not the case,” he said. “What I know from my lawyer is that only five years out the ten are effective and I have already spent half of it. “In the remaining time, I want to work hard.”

stuttering steps On The CD Tenerife Promotion Path

M

AyBE there is a guardian angel looking down on CD Tenerife this season, every time they falter their rivals suffer similar set backs. A 1-1 home draw with Sporting Gijon B wasn’t on the master plan but the generosity of others guaranteed at least a play off scrum down in the big group and kept a clear road ahead for a fast track home and away promotion decider.

Every winning team needs an Inigo Ros, reliable, steady, and dependable, the midfielder was out suspended this week and it really showed. Sporting are a good side, they proved that with a 3-2 win at their place earlier in the season and carried on with early raids that had the home defence on the back foot. Aridane settled the nerves with an 18th minute goal for Tenerife, Cristo and Llorente did the hard work but the big striker was at his unforgiving best to force the ball into the net after a half clearance. Sporting didn’t take the hint, they came back snapping at Tenerife with Jairo worrying the defence with a mazy run and then bearing down on Sergio Aragoneses who used his full power to

block him. A finger-tip-save from the home goalie pushed the ball away via the bar and Guerrero would have scored if he put more weight behind his shot. There was a sense of the inevitable when a Jairo corner found Guerrero and he nodded an equalizer. Maybe young striker Ayoze is saving his first senior goal for a rainy day, the Tenerife starlet put a good chance wide just before the break – well there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Fran Ochoa had won the three way race for the Inigo Ros role but didn’t measure up and was replaced by Suso for the second half, it could easily have been Chechu going off as he was having another poor game. Aridane tried to prise Sporting open, Julio kept him at bay and another woeful Chechu pass earned him an early finish with Yeray arriving to try to inject some new ideas. Tenerife had a better spell and

really should have punished their opponent’s bad luck. Ayoze could only find the side netting after keeper Davo had slipped leaving him a gift wrapped chance. Guillem came on as an extra forward for Cristo in a bold gamble to grab all three points but even the goalie accidentally body charging his goal post at a free kick couldn’t invite that killer blow. Sporting deserved their share of the spoils; they carved out several strong chances in the final minutes bringing the best out of Sergio Aragoneses in goal. Pushing the ball to safety off the post he followed up with a high catch from a corner. The 9,412 crowd were a little disappointed but know that there are more important challenges to come in the final five regular league games starting with a vital away game at third placed Real Oviedo this Sunday at 11am.

garachico gears up For Demolition Bike 50k

There will be no sedate Sunday cycling in Garachico this Sunday as the second annual Demolition Bike 50k race hurtles through the most testing of nature’s settings. Some 300 riders will barely have time to appreciate the most rugged charms of the north west of Tenerife.

The dedicated thrill seekers will set out at 9 am from San Jose de Los Llanos on a route made up of 95% forest regions but also taking in the new marina and historic town center of Tenerife’s original capital city. Five hours have been allotted for the race, last year the ladies winner Monica Reyes finished in 3 hours and 29 minutes but was well beaten by men’s champion Jacob Reyes in 2.15 hours.

Noah Keeps CD Marino Revival Afloat

A 1-1 away draw at fourth placed Caudal was another notable achievement for CD Marino and kept their recent streak of good form going. Relegation is all but guaranteed and even avoiding last place will be tough as they try to make up a seven point gap in the last five games but their pride is burning brightly.

There’s always at least one key player missing, this week it was suspended right back Aaron Darias, the German is normally one of the first names on the team sheet. Caudal have a promotion scrap on their hands and dominated the first half, Toyos hit the post during their early onslaught and Nacho stung the hands of Marino goalie Alberto. The home break through came after 20 minutes, a cross from the left by Sanchez found Rojas who gave Alberto no chance with his header. The second half brought a more enterprising spirit from Marino; Balduino had a strong shout for a penalty when he was brought down five minutes into the restart. Sandro gave the home de-

fence plenty of problems and forced a save from Diaz between the sticks. Experienced striker Noah made a welcome return from injury from the subs bench after 58 minutes and his goal threat brought its reward as the final 10 minutes approached. Sandro probed with another corner, the keeper only parried the ball and Noah used his head to

make it 1-1. Marino came close to snatching a late winner when Raul Barcos set up Noah but this time his header went wide of the post just before the final whistle blew. This Sunday second placed Leganes come to Las Americas for a 11am kick off, another attractive fixture and a chance to take another big scalp.

Vitolo Wears His Heart On His Sleeve

Always a legend in his home town of Santa Cruz, former CD Tenerife midfield star Vitolo has never forgotten his roots even when his professional skills have taken him abroad. Now playing for Panathinaikos in the Greek league he has just had a few reminders of home tattooed on his arms.

After rising through the ranks, Vitolo had four great seasons from 2001 to 2005 in the center of the park for Tenerife before heading to the mainland to play for Racing Santander and Celta Vigo. Spreading his net further he played for both senior teams in Salonica before sampling UEFA Cup football with Panathinaikos during the last two seasons. A popular visitor when he calls home, Vitolo invites many of his international football friends to Tenerife each Christmas for his Amigos de Vitolo charity game and also has his own fashion and leisure wear company. Hitting the milestone age of 30 later in the year he seems certain to eventually return home to pass on his experience either on or off the pitch.

Winning the loose balls and showing deadly accuracy for the hoop, Canarias can point to their dominance of the second and third quarters as they out gunned their hosts by 13-25 and 16-25. Blagota Sekulic inflicted the most damage with 18 points and was well supported by Ricardo Uriz with 16 and Saul Blanco with 15. This Sunday Uxue Bilbao are the visitors to the Pabellon Santiago in La Laguna for a noon tip off.
