The festival is one of the main cultural events of the archipelago, with a loyal and growing audience, invited to participate in street art, concerts and performances of the highest quality. The celebration of the festival is one of the most attractive events of cultural tourism in the Canary Islands, as said by Mayte Mederos, Director of Tourism Revitalization of Tenerife, who underlined that Mueca is “one of the most established cultural offerings on the Island “, which is promoted within the new tourism brand Xperience Puerto de la Cruz as” the quintessential tourist festival city.” Puerto de la Cruz has a very good understanding of tourism, which, according to Enrique Talg, vice president of hotel group, Ashotel, “the celebration of festivals is of international interest as the Mueca Festival helps to stimulate tourism in Puerto de la

Muecas, meaning Grimace or Grin or simply, Funny Faces, is held in the resort town north of Tenerife from 8th to 11th this May. For months The Confederates platform, next to Area Municipal Culture, have been preparing this new edition, is headlined by a high international component and new content for the program. Good Move! Hi Marc, just a note about our move. As most will know especially after many years at the house, moving can be a stressful and daunting affair. We sold after 13 years our house and found rented accommodation for the near future. Weeks of box packing and filtering through accumulated items time arrived. After having spent time calling, what seems, to uninterested companies we were recommended a chap called Chris Johnson, we soon got in touch and date and time arranged. Chris and his young helper worked really hard and efficiently at both ends and took our worries and the trauma out of the whole affair. I was so pleased and his price too was excellent. Highly recomendable to anyone. Well done chris and thanks. Peter Wing

dear Marc,

I have been in Tenerife for three weeks and have finally come across a copy of your paper! We are staying in Alcala, but find it difficult to find the free English Tenerife papers! I thought that I would contact you with this information in case you are interested in using it. late afternoon Friday 7th February, 2014 Whilst we were walking along the harbour we noticed that there were a couple of guardia cars, a lifeboat was leaving the harbour and an ambulance was arriving down the street. The lifeboat came back without rescuing anyone; a few minutes later a rescue helicopter flew overhead towards the cliffs. We then spotted the stranded people

Cruz.” The best Street Performances This annual event is an optimistic explosion of life in the city, in which people take to the street and the city becomes a cultural mix of the best in theater, music, dance, film, circus, especially magic and clowns ... Mueca has become an international benchmark of culture of the highest quality. The circuit of this edition includes the usual Mueca locations, el Muelle, Plaza de Europa and in Calle San Felipe, opposite Plaza del Charco. Also this year, the 2013 expanded scope of the festival remain: Esquivel, San Juan, Agustín de Bethencourt, and La Hoya, in which activities are organized thematically to music which are scheduled around , dance, literature, visual arts and magic. The Mueca shows start at 12 pm and the nightlife, which, since joining the festival program in 2012, extends to hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes and nightclubs. Mueca 2013 scheduled 37 functions, with a total of approximately 4000 spectators.

The jet ski was later brought in and stored in a local garage. There were a few other witnesses to this event who were photographing and videoing it, so it may be that you have already heard about this. I couldn’t see any pictures of this on your Facebook page, (but have now messaged you with these to your Fb as well) so I thought that I would send these to you if you would like to use them for your paper? news On THe rOCK A woman was rescued after being swept into the sea from the steps leading to the old harbour at Garachico at 8.15 this morning. A Guardia Civil patrol, working out of the Buenavista del Norte station, heard the woman’s cry for help and one officer threw a wooden pallet into the sea to keep her afloat in the strong waves, until he could get to her. The woman was transferred to the Icod de los Vinos health centre with slight injuries, but the officer although soaking wet was unharmed.

equality launch the ‘Check Sexism’ campaign The campaign is designed to stop sexual discrimination against individuals and promote equal opportunities amongst men and women

A 43-year-old man is in Hospitén Sur with serious head injuries this morning after falling down some stairs on the Avenida Rafael Puig in Playa de las Américas last weekend. The accident happened shortly after 2am Sunday, and emergency services helped at the scene before transferring the man to hospital, where he remains in serious condition. National Police are processing the paperwork, which may suggest that the man was a foreigner in Spain. Adeje Ayuntamiento has held a press conference to announce that it will be host this Saturday to the Canaries’ first ever ‘mapping party’, which will see up to 45 people in groups of three virtually mapping Adeje town, creating an online data base of places in the municipality for residents and visitors to access online with ease and accuracy. Each group of three will comprise experts in geo-localisation (i.e pinpointing your location), social networks fans, and in fact anyone who would like to sign up to the project. There are still places available for anyone who would like to take part, working between 11am to 1pm to map the town, using a number of specialised online applications to provide new geo-references for Adeje’s businesses, small and large, building a much more complete virtual picture of the area. They will visit the businesses, confirm addresses, webpages, phone numbers, take photographs, etc, creating an invaluable data base. To add an extra incentive, the winning group will win a hotel stay for two donated by Iberostar. Event director, Francis Ortiz, a self-confessed geolocalisation and geomarketing fanatic, said that a staggering 98% of Canarian companies are not mapped in Google Places, and many that are, including hotels and tourist businesses, are incorrectly located, or show wrong or out of date contact details. If a visitor is looking for the nearest hairdresser to their hotel in Costa Adeje online, given the lack of information, they could well be sent to Puerto de la Cruz, he said! These days, he added, Google Maps is the most used application on mobile phones worldwide, underling the importance of the use of geolocalisation. An 81-year-old Belgian man was slightly injured after falling while walking in the Masca Barranco .Emergency teams came to the rescue after being called by a tour guide around 3pm, to say that one of the hikers, an elderly man, had fallen and suffered head injuries. Because of the terrain the Emergency and Rescue Group Helicopter was deployed, which winched the man to safety after fire fighters got him to a place where the helicopter could operate. The injured man was taken to the Hospital Universitario de Canarias suffering from slight head and hip trauma. Adeje has announced the opening of the Premio Abinque 2014 – an annual award given to its outstanding woman of the year. This year’s presentation will be held on 8 March in a gala dinner, and tickets are now on sale from Adeje’s Concejalía de Políticas de Igualdad. The prize was first awarded in 2004 to recognize women who stood out for their contribution to male-female equality, as well as for their positive role in the life of the municipality. The award itself is always made by the Asociación San Juan, and is a statue made from natural materials like wood, and coloured with natural pigments. The award, and the icon it bears is the same every year regardless of the overall design – the silhouette of a woman in the form of the natural course of the Barranco del Infierno to el Humilladero, in la Caleta.

t

hE ADEJE COunCIllOr for equality, Juan Desiderio Afonso ruiz, has launched a new campaign called “Jaque al Sexismo” or “Check Sexism”. the aim of this initiative is to increase awareness of sexism among the population and work to prevent sexual discrimination and promote equal opportunities.

Afonso Ruiz says, “we want to up the awareness levels to make people aware of how limiting sexism can be for those affected”. Those, he adds, who use sexual discrimination are attempting to halt the development of others and therefore their growth as individuals. The councillor feels that “a vital tool for the healthy growth of equality is the eradication of sexism in our society and the construction of the kind of world we want to live in, and of course stamp out domestic violence too. To achieve this it is important to include the fight against sexual discrimination”. Sexism refers to all those practises and attitudes that promote different forms of treatment of individuals depending on their sexual orientation and which assumes characteristics and traditional behaviour patterns from men and women. To eliminate them they must first be identified in different situations. For that reason the Adeje department of equality is organising a series of monthly activities including workshops, exhibitions and debates with will try to look at the nature of this phenomeon, the many and complex causes, and the contexts and levels at which it occurs. The sessions will be designed with the help of expert Patricia G. Ojeda, who, through Radio Sur Adeje, will frame a series of alternative proposals (non sexist, non violent), at all levels that discrimination appears today (within relationships, with other

people, language, media, etc)., The radio has been chosen as a tool for getting the message out there as it is a borough communications tool, and those who cannot listen directly will also be able to find the programmes online. There will also be actual workshops and talks, and social networks will also play an important part in the campaign says the councillor in charge. The Check Sexism campaign will have an active Facebook page, and while people are more than welcome to participate, those who comment will be asked to be aware of the language they use when doing so!

history

Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz reminds people that sexual discrimination affects men as well as women, although there are many more cases against women given old cultural beliefs and habits “when women were considered inferior to men”. Sexism is present in different creeds and attitudes, but must be stopped as soon as possible, he adds. “The belief that one sex is superior or inferior to another is sexist as is misogyny (hatred of women) or misandry (hatred of men)”. He concludes “we must get to the point where the traditional imposed notions of masculine macho men and feminine delicate women are eliminated”.

F YOu’rE rEADInG this as soon as it’s delivered, it’s Valentine’s Day. We all know it’s an occasion engineered by the likes of hallmark cards and Interflora, but try explaining that to your girlfriend, wife or “special friend,” and see what kind of reaction you get! Put it this way, I wouldn’t advise it, so, if you’ve not got anything sorted, don’t worry there’s still time to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!! here’s some ideas:

Tenerife Weekly - 14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014 9. his and hers anything You’re definitely not into sharing, it’s like you want to be single.

12. teddy bear Says you’ve not given it a lot of thought. If its huge, you’re overcompensating for the fact that you KNOW you’ve not- but at least you’re not cheap. 8. A DVD Love Actually or Dirty Dancing, and maybe you’ll get some points, but the Die Hard box set is really for you though isn’t it?

7. Vouchers Why don’t you just tuck some small bills into her bra or knickers?

11. Anything involving rose petals Not even a flower, just dead bits of flowers, like buying her a puppy then hacking off it’s limbs.

4. Flowers Nothing says “I love you “better than half dead dandelions from the petrol station on the way home from work... actually nothing says “I forgot” better than..... Astronomically priced red roses or professional floral arrangement or forget it.

5

3. Jewellery Include a gift receipt (just in case) and you’re onto a winner. To be super romantic and suave, just before you’re about to go out for a romantic dinner somewhere, stop, look at her and tell her there’s something wrong with her outfit...then QUICKLY, BEFORE SHE STORMS OFF TO CHANGE, pull the aforementioned item of jewellery out of your pocket, put it gently on her neck/ finger/navel/etc and say “there, now you’re perfect.” Back of the net! 2. Perfume OK not massively original but, if you know what she loves/has run out of, this is perfect...OK if I’m honest this has scored higher than it should because it’s what I’ve done this year!

6. underwear Only if you take her to an expensive lingerie boutique and let her choose something really expensive to wear on Valentine’s Day-in other words, don’t, it’s too late. If you buy underwear for a woman, she will assume you’re calling her either too fat, too thin, too sexy or not sexy at all. Very. Dangerous.

10. Edible underwear Unless she’s so hungry she has to eat them, they’re not really for her are they?

5. Chocolates Handmade luxury Belgian chocolates created by a master chocolatier that look like individual works of art, yes. Half-melted fun-size Milky Way that’s been shoved in your pocket..NO!

1. An experience Instead of spending cash on something you’re not even sure she will like...why don’t you (shameless plug time) book into Decades special Valentines dinner and show, for a romantic evening you will both enjoy!! Well, whatever it is you do today, Happy Valentines P.S. One thing not on the list of things to do for your loved one on Valentine’s Day, if you are the editor of a newspaper, is send a message to your wife in the paper, so...Happy Valentine’s Day baby!! LYMTSW&P!!

EOPlE OFtEn prefer to donate food rather than money, and there is an official foodbank organisation in tenerife, the Banco de Alimentos de tenerife, familiarly known as Bancoteide. this organisation is a non-profit association founded in 2006, with the specific aim of receiving food from the Fondo Español de Garantía Agraria (FEGA), from private businesses like supermarkets, and from the public. Public donations usually result from the association running

specific campaigns but can be made at any time. the food is stored and then distributed to the neediest residents of tenerife via charitable institutions and official social assistance outlets which have the closest contact with those in need.

Products are collected in the Mercatenerife warehouse in the Polígono El Mayorazgo near Santa Cruz where they are weighed and put through a quality control procedure. They can, however, be donated in local supermarkets which collaborate in “Operaciones Kilo”, or through one of the affiliated associations. So, we can donate food direct to the warehouse,

through participating supermarkets (just ask if they are part of “operaciones kilo”), or via any of the affiliated associations. When it comes to charitable giving other than food, the principal charity in Spain – indeed the world – is Caritas, a part of the Catholic Church. Here in the Canaries, the regional branch is Caritas Canarias, and it has as its stated aim to help those in need in these islands, and particularly those in social exclusion, whether through homelessness, poverty or illness. There are various levels, on which one can help, but perhaps the most common is a simple donation, which can be made through Caritas Canarias’ website – these donations are tax deductible. There are other charities,

enerife, this week, saw the world’s top motorcycle press arrive at the Vincci hotel in Buenavista for the launch of a new Ducati motorcycle, “the 2014 1200 cc Monster S.”

The Monster range from The italian manufacturer has been around since 1993 and they have chosen Tenerife for this significant launch to the world of motorcyclists of their new product. The cream of the world’s motorcycle journalists were each given a pre production model of the “ 1200 Monster s “ to drive around the twisty el Teide roads from buenavista in the north, on up to the highest village in Spain, Villaflor, to the Villalba hotel where they were treated to lunch. after lunch they were given

technical talks, press videos and photographic sessions with the bikes for their individual articles in their own publications when they get back to their home country. They then jumped back on the bikes for another few hours trial ride through the forest and over the mountain back to buenavista. The journalists saw Tenerife at its best as the mountain was clear of cloud and each morning they woke to blue skies, what better place in the world to drive this fabulous new sports motorcycle? if you see articles and photographs of this great bike in motorcycle journals and in ducati showrooms throughout the world they will all come from the island of Tenerife - what super publicity, thank you ducati !

of course, the main one of which is perhaps the Cruz Roja (Red Cross). There is a section of the website for the Tenerife province, which also aims to help the dispossessed and socially excluded. There is a page with information about donating – if you click on the link on the right hand side which says Donativos afectados crisis en España you will get a pop-up box showing banks and the relevant account numbers for donations. Donations can also be made direct through the website, donations are tax deductible. Something frequently overlooked when we talk about charities in Spain is the actual word “charity”, in the sense of an organization. Despite constant use of the word in fund raising activities, there is actually no direct equivalent in Spain to that which we understand as a charity in

the UK. Rather, there are two types of charitable organizations: a fundación (foundation) and an asociación (association). There is a large difference between the two, since a fundación must have an asset base of 30,000 euros and a board of trustees as basic legal requirements, whereas an asociación is far simpler and virtually free to set up. Even though there is no central charity commission in Spain as there is in the UK, there are strict administrative, fiscal and legal controls over the fundraising activities and expenditure of fundaciones, in addition to the requirement for them to have significant assets and a board of trustees. It is, too, only fundaciónes whose names are legally required to be registered, and only they benefit from tax relief on donations. An asociación can

only gain such fiscal benefits if they have a declaration of “utilidad pública” (public usefulness) from the Ministerio del Interior, for which they must already have been in existence, and acting effectively, for at least two years. From the foregoing, it will be clear that only fundaciones really equate to what we recognize as charities. This is not to say that asociaciones don’t often do sterling work, but it is also fair to say that Spain has known scandal after scandal concerning bogus “charities”. At the very least, I hope the above has helped provide some information for readers to begin to check that they are donating to genuine causes, rather than putting them off donating at all, because there is increasing need for, and reliance on, charitable giving in Spain at present.

last Friday (February 7th) océano Sostenible and the adeje council released two chelonia mydas or green sea turtles back into the ocean following their recovery.

hE ADEJE councillor for Education, Andrés Pérez ramos, the representative from the Fundación Océano Sostenible, David novillo and students from sixth class in los Olivos primary school were on hand to assist in the release of the two turtles into the sea at El Puertito,

Adeje. Olivina and titris (which means star) were returned to the water having been cured and cared for at the Centro de recuperación de la Fauna Silvestre la tahonilla.

Pérez Ramos said, “since the inception of the Marine Classroom in El Puertito it has been actively contributing to the sustainable development of this

stretch of Adeje’s coast line, in preservation, conservation and protection, so that it can be enjoyed by present and future generations of residents and visitors. However it is important that everyone understands and respects the natural habitat of those species who live in the sea.” At the same time he welcomed the presence of the young students and said it was an opportunity for

They are looking for anyone who is of a reasonably fit and energetic disposition and who can integrate into the friendly atmosphere of an existing team. They will also need to be able to give between three and four hours a day for one or two days each week. You don’t necessar-

The work itself is varied and ranges from evaluating and preparing donations to serving on the shop floor with quite a lot in between! Do you think you fit the bill? Do you feel you are the right person for the job? Do you have the qualifications? Then why not take the opportunity to become a Lions Volunteer and enjoy the satisfaction of making the Lion’s “Dream Holidays” and other projects part of your experience. them to be aware of the repercussions of certain actions that damage and undermine the respect we must have for our natural surroundings, both on land and at sea. Olivina y Titrit were in care for 12 and 10 respectively. In fact, this was the second time in care for Titrit, who was injured in 2012 as well. The council and Océano Sostenible used the opportunity to remind people these are

delicate creatures and the majority of injuries that they see are caused by the same thing – hooks which have been left in the sea, so people need to fish responsibly and not leave anything in the water that can affect the quality of life of the living beings there, such as , in this case, turtles. The turtle release is included in the Programme to Release Sea Turtles as part of the Environmental

Education project, which has been run by public administrations and the Océano Sostenible association for a number of years. These turtles measured about 40 cm and were returned to the water under the watchful eyes of the students who had loads of questions about the creatures, what they eat, how do they breathe, why did they need to be cured, how to help them, etc.

f you are visiting la Gomera here are a few ideas to make your trip even more enjoyable. All the information is taken from Willies la Gomera Blogspot try some tapas You can go on a ‘tapas walk’ in Playa de Santiago from Feb. 8th to March 9th 2014, when several bars and restaurants will offer special tapas for the reasonable price of 2,50 euro which includes a glass of wine or beer or a soft drink. The following hostelries are participating: La Cuevita, Tasca Tomás, Bar Tarajal, Tasca Los Chicos, Taca Pastrana, Bodegón del Mar, Mesón de Clemente and Bar La Chalana. Visit the Visitors Centre in the na-

tional Park There is a large model of the island of La Gomera at the very informative visitor’s centre of the national park. This interpretative centre also has a smaller model on show, besides explaining flora, fauna, geology, history, culture, crafts, customs, etc.. There’s also a small museum cottage, craft shops, a garden with labelled plants and more. The centre is located at Juego de Bolasabove the village of Las Rosas and is called Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional del Garajony, but is just outside of the park itself. It’s a definite must-see for visitors and fortunately, still free of charge. Buy Organic Food There are several of organic growers and farmers on La Gomera and some of the smaller supermarkets sell their produce and other

About ten years ago it was started by local man Jose Manuel who is presently running an organic farm in Germany, but his brother Pedro keeps the farm going while his wife manages the shop. Best of all, after you’ve done your shopping in their idyllic farm shop, you can drop in to the bus station bar across the road and discuss the politics of food or the weather with Pedro, who frequently drops in for a short break from working his fields. You’ll enjoy the

spectacular view from there and later watch the sun set across the Atlantic while nursing a cold beer. Many visitors to la Gomera are asking if there are parts or traces left to be seen of the film set of In the Heart of the Sea, which was recently filming with director Ron Howard in Playa de Santiago. The short and simple answer is ‘No’ – everything has been restored to exactly the same condition as before the film scenes were shot. There is nothing in Santiago which might indicate the changes and all the activity during the last months of 2013. And for those who are superfit Registration is now open for the Third Edition of Gomera Paradise Trail which will be on June 28th. The race consists of three levels 12Km, 32Km and 58Km.

Live Aricco News

Fasnia Refuge Robbed We were sad to hear this week that approximately 3000 euros worth of dog food was taken from the Fasnia refuge where many of our dogs still reside. We immediately sent 1000 euros to their bank account and put a call out for help. In particular, Joe and Stuart from the Market Tavern and Surrey Arms in Los Cristianos were quick to raise 150 euros, which we also banked to their account, as well as blankets and towels. Anyone wanting to leave cash donations or indeed towels and blankets can do so at any of our shops for us to pass on. We hope the culprits are caught very soon, it is tragic the depths to which some will stoop.

Rip is 2 years old and has not had the best of luck so far. The Bijon cross was found in the road by one of our supporters, his coat badly matted. So badly in fact that he had to be more or less completely shaved to get rid of all the burrs, ticks and parasites. Now his fur has grown and he looks very handsome. He was on trial for permanent adoption but his potential owner

Katie and friends’ Birthday BBQ

the birthdays of Alfie, Olivia and Luke which all fall at the same time. From 2pm there will be food and drink a plenty. It will be our third bbq there and the first two were fantastic so come and enjoy yourselves.

Our opening hours are as follows:Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 14:00 – 17:00 Saturday 13.00 – 16.00 The Refuge will be closed Wednesday, Sunday and on Public Holidays.

Are you travelling to Germany? Accion del Sol is desperately looking for people who are travelling to Dùsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart or Munich who would be willing to accompany a dog on its way to a new family. It costs you nothing but a little bit of your time and it gives dogs a chance of a new life in Germany. Sometimes it’s easier to re home larger dogs or special needs dogs in Germany rather than Tenerife.

Accion del Sol is completely responsible for the dog and Aktion Tier staff will do all the necessary paperwork and meet you at both airports. In Germany, the dog will be collected upon your arrival at the chosen airport. Please email acciondelsol@gmail.com or call 922778630 for more information if you are travelling to any of these destinations and would like to help the dogs to a better life.

It’s becoming harder and harder to adopt the dogs with so many coming in to the refuge. Please, a message to you all, think very carefully before allowing your dog to get pregnant; refuges are full of unwanted dogs. Sterilisation and castration is the real way forward to help this crisis on the island. Every single dog at Accion del Sol is castrated or sterilised, ensuring no unwanted litters that will only add

to the existing problems. Puppies have been coming into the refuge in droves! Please do come and visit the refuge if you would like to adopt one of the many dogs looking for new loving homes. There is no fee for adopting a dog and every dog is micro chipped, inoculated, wormed and free of fleas but a donation towards the cost of all this is appreciated.

K9 Tenerife News Update February 2014

O

ur 20th anniversary year proved to be an eventful one for a number of reasons. One of the most pleasing was the turnover of dogs in and out of the kennels. At 362, this was the lowest figure for a number of years, 400+ being the norm. However, the number of missing pets brought into the kennels increased, 90% of whom were not micro-chipped, which meant that distressed dogs and distraught owners were not reunited for several weeks in some instances. Had the animal been chipped, they would have been back together, most probably the next day. For the sake of a few euros, HAVE YOUR DOG MICROCHIPPED! We had fewer “fundraising events” than previously, but those we did have were well received and enjoyed by those loyal supporters who attended. The Anniversary Dogs Dinner at Palm Mar in September, the Christmas

Dinners at Vivo and El Marquese in December, and the Sponsored Walk & “after party” also in December, (to name just four) raised much needed funds to care for the guys at the kennels. Our one disappointment was not being able to hold our Christmas Hamper event at Iceland in Las Chafiras, but so pleased that another charity did very well in our place. Our “team Alcala” volunteers have now become the backbone of K9. Our second hand shop in Alcala plaza has had a record year, despite all the expenses incurred in running a fully legal operation. The Monday market stall also had a good year as did our significantly improved Car Boot Sale on the last Sunday of each month in Tipsy Terrace car park at Los Gigantes bus station. The first function of 2014 is our annual “Get Together for K9 Volunteers & Supporters” which is being held on Saturday 22nd March at The Heritage Bar in Los Cristianos. Aidy Evans is once again compere and will be ably assisted by a number of entertainers between 3 and 6pm. The event is open to everyone who has supported K9 in whatever way in the past, or would like to do in the future. There will be a Tombola &

Raffle, Book Stall and a Quiz if time allows. Further details will be added regularly to the K9 page on Facebook and the local free papers during March. If any artist is able to give 30 minutes of their time, and/or anyone would like to donate something for the raffle or tombola, we would love to hear from you. Many thanks once again to all those who have supported K9 over the past 20 years. The whole purpose of our existence is to provide a safe refuge for those abandoned and abused animals that find themselves, through no fault of their own, in our kennels to await, hopefully for a forever home. Further information about K9 can be found at www. k9tenerife.com or the K9 page on Facebook. Other contact information is info@ k9tenerife.com or k9mikey@ gmail.com The kennels are open every morning from 9am to help exercise the dogs or from 11am if just looking The kennel phone numbers are 822 106195 and 667 638 468 Info regarding donations for the shop can be made to Muriel on 646561035 or Kenny on 686141003 or any of the above contacts.

ADEJE’S SPORTING STARS

by cliodna o’Flynn

I

t WAS A VErY busy sporting weekend here in Adeje and as well as concentrated efforts on the pitches there was fun off the pitches too.

on Saturday the club ademi Tenerife were in action against a team from the Spanish peninsula. This wheelchair team showed their true form and were winning from the first basket against bSR cocemfe Puertallano and never let up the pressure. This was a first division game and the home side showed why they are one of the toughest side in the division. The

match was played at the costa adeje School, with cheerleading from the Tenerife Tigers. The Tigers were in action the next day too at Tijoco, where they train. They were invited to cheer for local baseball side Halcones de adeje – and this could be a ‘match’ made in heaven. The two teams sport the same colours and there was a real unity between the two groups, with some great performances by the Halcones and a sparkling after-match show by the Tigers. against teams from Granadilla and Gran canaria, the Halcones were triumphant too,

but there was much applause and medals for all the players. amanda lambert, the Tigers coach and owner, was also surprised and delighted to be presented with an award by the adeje councillor for sports adolfo afonso Ferrera for the troupe’s support of adeje teams, and local Tijoco councillor esther Rivero was also on hand to cheer on her local sides. Great to see such a multicultural sporting selection in our borough, and there will be more baseball and cheerleading action in two weeks in Tijoco.

O

VEr thE lASt few days there have been various news reports concerning a violent attack and robbery on a British “businessman “, or “estate agent”. Some have been vague, others have been wildly exaggerated, and yet others simply wrong. now, I can report, sadly, that los Cristianos estate agent Paul lennox was the victim of an aggravated burglary around 9.15pm last Saturday evening whilst at home.

At the time, he was alone in his house near the Otelo restaurant at the top of Adeje, since his wife was in the UK, something he says

is a blessing. He was surprised, in his own words, by “four heavy thugs who beat me unconscious, taped my mouth and hands and then robbed me”. He was on the terrace when he became aware of his four assailants, wearing tracksuit tops with hoods up and zipped up to cover their mouths. He ran into the kitchen and barred the door but almost immediately the living room’s patio window was shattered by a garden ornament, thrown at it with force. Paul was beaten and tied, as he has described, and the next thing he was aware of was his neighbour undoing his bindings, and calling the police on his behalf. The Guardia Civil is investigating this violent robbery with intimidation, which Paul is at a loss to explain, not least because the only item stolen was a Rolex watch he had been wearing, and

which is worth 4,000 euros (not the 50,000 euros reported). Despite the presence of other valuable items in the house, nothing was removed, though the men did rummage through wardrobes, apparently seeking a safe. Although Paul himself caught barely a fleeting glimpse of eyes and noses before losing consciousness, three of the four were seen by neighbours the previous day dawdling near the house; they were also heard speaking and it appears that they are Canarians. Paul is still recovering from the injuries they dealt his face, head and arms, which were initially treated at Adeje health centre, and then in Hospitén Sur. It must have been a terrifying ordeal, and I am sure that many in the British community here will wish him a full and speedy recovery – psychologically as well as physically.

Daytime Dining options consist of a wide variety of snacks and sushi

complemented by an innovative cocktail menu, specializing in Gin Tonic Experience and Vodka Bar Experience. 15 Arona’s beaches finally have lifeguards again

Tenerife Weekly - 14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

A

rOnA’S lIFEGuArDS are saying that the beaches are now manned. that is to say, Arona’s old lifeguards are saying that the beaches are now manned … and not by them. After the entire saga, resulting in a year’s worth of posts, of

18 months of being forced to provide minimum services without being paid, and of finally being locked out of their own work station, Arona’s beaches finally have lifeguards again. new ones.

as i posted on 14th January, arona’s environment councillor,

antonio Sosa, had announced that the council was looking to contract two or three lifeguards for a few months to provide temporary cover until the process to award the contract for the service is finished. and the council has now done so, it seems, six of them, and none from the old contingent. as diario de avisos is

reporting, Pro activa will now provide lifeguard cover to the beaches temporarily. The lifeguards say they will continue with their fight to have their own rights recognized, and compensated. From a purely cool-headed perspective, at least there are lifeguards, so Tenerife’s tourism reputation won’t continue to

be endangered by the chaos in arona. but who will forget the last year and a half? and who will forget the lifeguards themselves? and hopefully no-one will forget the solution at last provided by councillor Sosa, who says that things couldn’t continue like this, and an urgent response was needed …

IOS VS ANDROID

G

OOGlE AnDrOID was easily the top smartphone operating system in Spain according to Kantar Worldpanel Comtech, the and left competitors with single-digit market share figures.

Android dominated the Spanish smartphone operating system market share with an astounding 86.2 percent during the three months ending in December 2013. Android saw an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to the same three-month

period ending in December 2012 when the platform garnered 85.9 percent. The “nearest” competitor Apple was 79.5 percentage points behind with 6.7 percent of the market share in Spain. The iOS company finished the three months ending in December 2013 with 0.6 percent lower compared to the same period in 2012. When December 2012 concluded, Apple’s smartphone operating system previously accounted for 7.3 percent The highest market share percentage increase went to Microsoft’s Windows Phone compared to fellow rivals with 4.4 percentage points. Despite

the percentage increase, Windows Phone finished third with 5.6 percent, which is an increase from 1.2 percent in 2012. Finally, BlackBerry, which previously ranked third finished fourth due to a 2.2 percent drop from 2012. “Other” smartphone operating systems accounted for 1.3 percent of the market share, down 1.9 percent by December 2012. Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s Strategic Insight Director Dominic Sunnebo stated: “Android finished 2013 strongly, showing year-on-year share growth across 12 major global markets including Europe, U.S.A., Latin America, China and Japan. Apple has lost share in most countries compared with this time last year, but importantly it has held strong shares in key markets including 43.9 [percent] in U.S.A., 29.9 [percent] in Great Britain and 19.0 [percent] in China.” Windows Phone’s increase in Spain, apparently, was not echoed in other major markets including Latin America. “[Windows Phone’s] performance also deteriorated toward the end of 2013 in the important growth markets of China, U.S.A. and Latin America,” added Sunnebo, after noting the Microsoft mobile operating system saw a minor gain in Europe of 3 percentage points.

16 X factor’s ruth lorenzo for eurovision?

Tenerife Weekly - 14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

F

OrMEr X FACtOr star ruth lorenzo is hoping to represent her home nation Spain at this year’s final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark, on May 10th.

Ruth who came fifth in the 2008 run of the ITV talent show, is hot favourite and should she succeed will perform her self-penned Dancing in the Rain - sung in both Spanish and English - which is being touted for success at both the tournament and in the charts. Lorenzo, was mentored by

Dannii Minogue, and was beaten by Alexandra Burke to the X Factor title, but has since gone on to enjoy success in her native Spain with debut single Burn, which climbed to number 16 on the Spanish chart in 2011. The 31 year old has revealed she wrote the Eurovision entry in a London pizza restaurant, while going through a ‘tough time’ after being dropped by her record label. Her first UK single, The Night, was released in 2011 – but failed to chart. The release coincided with Lorenzo showing off a brand new look after shedding more than two-stone in weight, she

said at the time: ‘I lost two stone over the last year – through a combination of boxing, sky diving and dancing! I love my sexy new look. I love that now I can wear all these amazing dresses from designers like Vivienne Westwood and my girl Dannii Minogue’s Project D.’ But Lorenzo, who resides between London and her south eastern Spanish home town of Murcia, faces stiff competition from Brequette, Jorge Gonzalez, La Dama and Raul if she is to be voted the best song by the Spanish public in a live TV sing-off later this month.

Town With The Blues Gets A Smurfin’ Boost

t

he small Spanish village of Juzcar that agreed to be painted blue for a Smurfs movie in 2011, has opted to remain Smurfville to continue luring tourists.

The village which has a population of 400 people in the Andalusia region of southern Spain was featured in the Hollywood version of the Belgian comic after Mayor David Fernandez Tirado was able to convince his neighbours to paint all their houses Smurf blue: “A person came and asked me if we were willing to paint the village in blue to film the movie Smurfs II. Mainland News In Brief Spain’s leading telecoms operator Telefonica has been fined 500,000 euros. The communications company failed to make a timely notification to the competition authority, the CNMC, of the prices and conditions of new internet and television packages, as it is required to as a dominant market operator in what the regulator classed as two “very serious” breaches of competition rules in its home market. They also blocked access to 11 premium text message numbers being run by another company. CNMC said the rules were necessary to allow it to ensure a level playing field for other operators. Telefonica is facing growing competition in its home market as cash-strapped Spaniards shop around for cheaper internet and phone offers in a market that was, not all that long ago, a virtual monopoly for the Spanish business. Spanish police are on the hunt for five foreign fugitives who are thought to be hiding in Spain, including two British men and a Colombian woman wanted for murder. Police asked the public to be on the lookout for Kevin Thomas Parle, 33, who is wanted in Britain for the murder of a young mother who was shot dead when three men burst into her home in the northwestern city Liverpool in 2005. He may be living in the Mediterranean town of Alicante, police said in a statement. Police said they were also looking for Christopher Guest More, 36, who is wanted in connection for beating a man to death during an attempted robbery at a remote farmhouse in the northwestern county of Cheshire in 2003. Last year alone Spanish police detained 35 fugitives wanted by British authorities. U.S. retail giant Costco plans to open its first stores in Spain this year because of the Iberian nation’s “great potential” for growth, Costco, one of the world leaders in the warehouse club segment, plans to open a store in the southern Spanish city of Seville in the spring and another soon after in Madrid, where “we are working to identify various possible locations,” said the company’s senior vice president for international operations, Jim Murphy. Spanish media reports said the store in the capital would open in the summer. Costco’s international strategy has focused in the past on opening a couple of stores to test the market and make adjustments. Costco operates 33 warehouse stores in Mexico, 25 in Britain and 18 in Japan. Spanish police have raided gold dealers’ shops across the country and arrested 164 people in a crackdown on suspected money laundering. More than 600 police and tax officials searched 88 sites including gold dealers’ stores and homes. In a statement police said that “a large-scale operation across Spain against money laundering and tax fraud in gold dealers’ establishments. The conglomerate, which used fake companies and fronts, also served to bring stolen jewellery into circulation and dodge taxes.” Officers seized 6.5 tonnes of gold and silver from the stores, where dealers buy valuables from members of the public, as well as nearly 1.7 million euros in cash, 52 cars and motorbikes. Authorities also froze bank accounts and other assets worth 16 million euros in the raids.

The TW Political Showcase with Brian Harrison

n the 8th of April, 2003 (8/4), a young Telecinco cameraman awoke in Baghdad to hear distant tanks maneuvering and firing rounds. He was staying at the Palestine Hotel, a white flag refuge recognized by both sides of the second Gulf war as a no-fire zone. He looked out from his hotel balcony with binoculars, trying to locate the source of this activity. A few seconds later, a missile ploughed into the hotel, ending his life along with a Ukrainian reporter. This young man was José Couso, a dedicated cameraman and father of two. Investigators soon found that the missile which killed José Couso was fired from the3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, who seemed to be inforcing a total press blackout, whatever the cost to its allies or their news personnel. The Spanish government, both under PSOE and PP administrations, were exposed by Julian Assange & Co for secretly agreeing with the US to forget the matter, whilst at home they looked into TV cameras and told their Country that they would do all they can to bring those war criminals to justice. Since that fateful day in Baghdad, the Couso family has fought tirelessly to bring to justice the US soldiers or their commanders who ordered the firing of missiles into a white flag hotel. There were subsequently international arrest warrants issued against several of those accused US troops. This week, the family met with all of the major political parties in parliament, requesting political opposition to the end of the “universal justice” law. All of the parties, except the PP, vowed to oppose and end to this law, which contains safeguards against impunity for violators of human rights. Javier Couso has been active in bringing international attention against 8/4 and many other war crimes and human rights violations. He was recently invited by the Izquierda Unida (IU) political party to begin his political career with them. Here’s an exclusive TW interview with Javier Couso.

Brian Harrison: The Izquierda Unida (IU) have requested that you represent the party as their Mallorca candidate for the forthcoming European elections. Why Mallorca, and not your home city of Madrid? Javier Couso: As part of the nomination process, the Izquierda Unida party may present profiles of candidates which seem most suitable to any federation, political arena or location. In this case, after evaluating all options, the IU democratically elected me to represent Mallorca. BH: It has been said that you are more anti-political than political. Do you have faith in the IU as a political organization? JC: I wouldn’t call myself anti-political,

because since my teenage years I’ve always been involved in the political activity of social movements, but I have had some distrust of traditional politics. But over the years and partly as a result of my struggles against the perpetrators of 8/4, I met some wonderful policy makers within the IU, and I began to believe that the fight should not only be on the street, but also within public institutions, with the public voice in the front line. The isolation of politics from the public, their needs and wishes has created a severe distrust of mainstream political parties. This is something which must change. 5 BH: A Wikileaks cable exposed that the Spanish government, under both the PP and PSOE terms, were implicated in granting a secret immunity to the US soldiers who were involved in 8/4. Did you suspect that those political parties held agreements between themselves and with the US, some of which infringe upon human rights? JC: It is beyond all doubt that the two parties that have governed since 82 in Spain agree to the same policy regarding state affairs and foreign policy, particularly regarding matters to appease US administrations. Unfortunately, many countries often confuse being an ally of the US and being one of its puppets. We can consider the “Atlantic link” as a submission to U.S. strategic imperatives, something which is unacceptable to any sovereign nation which claims to respect International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. It has become increasingly apparent that if human rights happen to conflict with the wishes of the US, then those human rights are brushed under the carpet. BH: You have been at the forefront of your family’s ongoing battle to bring those responsible for your brother’s death to justice, even though that task has involved confrontations with several Spanish and US administrations. Are you concerned that those governments might use dirty tactics to impede your political career? JC: I have never allowed myself to be intimidated, and never will. One can’t live a life under threats or with fear. BH: As one of Spain’s leading human rights activists, what is your reaction when you see video footage, mostly recorded by the public, containing images of unidentified members of the police forces, who are violently assaulting pacific protestors, or even bystanders and reporters? JC: I feel cheated and angry. Cheated because the police are at the service of the

public, they have been given specific rights so that they are able to deal with criminals, as opposed to using unnecessary or unprovoked force against the public. I am angry because no law exists in Spain which allows ill-treatment or torture civilians. And no law allows public servants to hide their identities and violently attack the citizens who they should be protecting. This is an issue which deeply concerns me. I recently wrote about this subject within a study by Amnesty International and also a report by the United Nations about torture. Both of these studies left Spain in a very poor light. BH: If you were successful in the EU elections, is this an issue which you would tackle? JC: If I were to be elected in the European elections, it is an issue which I would eagerly address, without doubt. I want my country to have a police force which performs its function whilst respecting laws, and Spain must completely eradicate these barbaric practices. BH: How would you rate President Rajoy’s first two years as leader of Spain’s government with respect to domestic and international human rights? JC: An unprecedented disaster! Rajoy began his term by twice pardoning Catalan regional police officers who were previously convicted of torture, although the judges in the case were strongly opposed to such clemency. Then came the attacks on young students in Valencia, the excess force used in the eviction families from their homes, the indiscriminate use of rubber bullets against peaceful protestors, not forgetting recent events in Ceuta with the death of more than 14 immigrants. These acts have exposed a president who does not think twice before the use of violence as a response to social protests or immigration. BH: British residents in Spain have the right to vote in local and European elections. These residents form a large part of the electorate of many regions, including Mallorca. Do you believe that foreigners should participate in the political affairs of Spain? JC: If someone lives here, it seems perfectly logical that they should be able to vote. I’d like to extend this right to all immigrants who work with us.

rUDDy DUCKS!

E

VErY YEAr, horny British ducks are flying south to ravish Spanish females. the ruddy duck, yes, that’s its actual name, has an enormous sexual appetite and the promiscuous male of the British species is getting it on with Spanish ladies of the rare white-headed duck. But the Spanish Government fears the British-bred ruddy duck is putting their country’s species at risk and

Madrid has formally complained of the threat to its native bird’s survival. Unlike most ducks, the British birds take several mates and have fathered so many cross-breed ‘Euro ducklings’ that the precious line of white-heads was in danger of being bred out of existence. The British government have spent ten years and £4milllion of taxpayers’ money to fully exterminate the British species for its crimes of passion, even though it causes no harm in the UK. Now, only an estimated 100 or even as few as 20 remain,

in remote corners of England, Wales and Scotland. The massacre of the ruddy duck was ordered in 2003 by Defra (the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), following a series of government-level protests from Madrid Now there is a £2,500 bounty on each bird’s head and the cull has claimed approximately 5,500 ruddy ducks, causing anger among British conservationists, bird lovers and landowners. The North American ruddy duck is a cousin of the whiteheaded duck. They were first brought to Britain in the 1950s by naturalist Sir Peter Scott who kept them on his sanctuary in Gloucestershire. Several escaped and bred, and the population was around 6,000 in 2000. The bird is native to North and South America, where its population is around 700,000. The RSPB said: ‘Following the Government’s decision in 2003 that eradicating ruddy ducks is necessary as part of a package of measures to conserve the white-headed duck, we welcome Defra’s decision to proceed.’

Spain Denies Rubber Bullet Use

S

PAnISh authorities have denied its security forces had fired rubber bullets at migrants trying to swim to Spanish soil. the migrants were trying to reach the Spanish territory of Ceuta from a beach in neighbouring Morocco Nine, including one woman, drowned during the attempt last Thursday . Other migrants tried to storm through a land checkpoint. Spanish media and human rights groups claimed migrants were alleging that police fired into the sea where the Africans were swimming as Moroccan and Spanish security forces tried to repel them from Ceuta. However Spanish authorities said civil guards used the rubber bullets to ward off the migrants but that they fired them in the air and did not target anyone directly. The head of the Spanish government’s delegation in Ceuta, Francisco Antonio Gonzalez claimed: “We did not use anti-riot equipment when

the immigrants were in the water.” Gonzalez also said the migrants were “very violent” and threw rocks at the Moroccan and Spanish security forces. Mohamed Benaissa, the head of the Northern Human Rights Observatory in Morocco, claims that several migrants most of which were from Cameroon were hurt as Spanish police tried to repel them. A government delegation said : “rubber bullets were fired in the air, over a six-metre fence, never against people.” Morocco is under pressure from Spain, to prevent sub-Saharan African migrants from heading to its northern shores in a desperate quest to reach mainland Europe. Caminando Fronteras a Spanish refugees’ rights association clims “The civil guards fired plastic bullets to burst the floats being used by the migrants, many of whom don’t know how to swim” The United Left party is demanding that the Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz resign and that an international enquiry be carried out.

pArAMoUNT pArK iS CoMiNg!

hE PArAMOunt theme park proposed for Murcia, Spain has been given the green light by its financers and has begun construction immediately. Following the in the footsteps of movie studio based theme parks like Disneyland and universal City in Florida this is a huge piece of very good news for the region and Spain, as many believe it will be a credible competitor to the Disney- l a n d Paris resort.

The project was presented at Fitur, the big International Tourism Fair in Spain mentioned a few issues back. At the fair, new exciting 3D renderings were shown as well as stunning high definition artwork. The project, which is truly enormous, will include an area called Lifestyle Centre with condos and office buildings, leisure gardens, seven hotels from 3 to 5 star, a casino, mall, dining and night life areas, business and convention centre, an auditorium and an exhibition hall for cultural events. But it’s the theme park itself I’m more interested in! Like the Florida parks, Paramount will be divided into differently themed sections- in this case, five lands, at the entrance, “Paseo Paramount”, guests will enter the park by going through a recreation of the legendary gate of Paramount Studios in Hollywood. A large central square will connect the other lands, to the right is “Plaza Futura”, and on the left is “Adventure City”. There you will find one of the main attractions of the park, “Paramount

Live”, a large auditorium with shows and musicals inspired by famous Paramount movies, as well as the site of the “Festival of Paramount Walk”, a parade with the main characters from Paramount which at night becomes a spectacular light show. The large central square overlooks a lake with stunning views of the rest of the park. A small garden promenade serves as a shortcut to “The Enchanted Forest” and “Rango’s West” lands. “Adventure City” which has an enormous rollercoaster planned and draws some of its i n -

spiration from Paramount movies such as Grease, Mission Impossible and The Godfather. Mission Impossible 3D will be an immersive 3D experience comparable to the amazing Spiderman ride that I absolutely loved at the Universal Park in Florida, which of course uses cutting edge 3D technology. There was a Titanic walk in museum planned which will not now go ahead. In this area are the “Greased Lightnin’ Bumper Cars” set in a 50’s gas station, also a Grease themed restaurant with typical American style food, and a recreation of the famous restaurant from The Godfather trilogy, the Osteria Corleone. We are then on to Rang o ’s West land, based on t h e Wild W e s t with a twist; like the movie,

household items like barrels and bottles and been converted into a tiny village by the movies characters, giving visitors the illusion of being shrunk down to critter size! Rides such as “Spirit of the West”, a mine train roller-coaster “Rango’s Ragin’ Rapids”, a fast raft ride through the land and “Rango’s Rootin’ Tootin’ 4D Spectacular”, a 4-D theater movie experience. Shops, live performances and places to eat make up the lands content. “The Enchanted Forest” is the next land and is divided into three areas, Sleepy Hollow, a Tim Burton inspired land dominated by the unmistakeable dead tree from the movie. Here

you will find the 3D Sleepy Hollow show. The village of Stormhold is next, inspired by the movie Stardust and features wizards, witches and a theatre with interactive shows called “Wizard Workshop”. The third area is inspired by the S p i d e rw i c k Chronicles, a forest full of magical creatures from fairies to evil ogres and other characters, a magical world created for the movie. For the smaller children, it contains the “Griffin Flyer”, a children’s roller coaster, a large hedge maze, a small children’s theatre and a boat ride through a magical world filled with fairies. But best of all is “The Spiderwick Chronicles: Magical Mayhem”, an interactive dark

ride where visitors armed with magic wands will enter the enchanted forest and kill the ogre who wants to destroy the magical world “Plaza Futura” is much like Disney’s “Tomorrowland,” and “will be dedicated to science fiction and to that uncertain future that many movies have described, with thrilling outer space adventures”. Most of the franchises that have lands or attractions so far, haven’t exactly set the box-office alight, in fact some may not have even heard of them, but the ace card for Paramount is here and it’s just two words.. STAR TREK. The first Star Trek-based attraction, Starfleet Spain Recruiting Center, is a 3D simulator ride set in a recruitment centre in which guests will experience adventures in outer space. “Warp Speed Coaster” an adrenaline junkie ride aboard spectacular trains equipped for all kinds of motions that will go up to 100 feet high, with a top speed of more than 62 mph and will be a half mile long. Work on the park is already underway with a budget of 390 million euros. The park should be ready for an opening in late 2015 or early 2016. I. CAN’T. WAIT!!!

rInCE WIllIAM has flown off on a hunting trip days before taking part in a high-profile campaign to highlight poaching and the illegal wildlife trade. Prince William and brother Harry, are at a country estate in Cordoba, southern Spain, owned by one of the richest men in Britain, the Duke of Westminster, to shoot wild boar and stag. The 37,000-hectare property is teeming with wildlife. On a previous visit they were said to have bagged a staggering 740 partridge in a single day. The princes are frequent visitors to Finca La Garganta, which is one of

the largest and most exclusive hunting estates in Western Europe. Beaters and packs of dogs are brought in to ensure that the princes do not return home without several ‘kills’ to their name. Although none of the animals they shoot are protected species, William’s participation in next week’s high-profile Governmenthosted conference on the illegal wildlife trade, the timing makes the trip seem a little thoughtless. The future king is due to attend a symposium at London Zoo on Wednesday as well as a reception at the Natural History Museum, followed by the conference itself a day

hE EurOPEAn wildcat has 18 retractable claws, each complete with a razor sharp tip. Wrists that rotate for climbing trees and gripping prey. And when needed, she can sprint at 30mph to bring down her dinner...and she’s in Spain.

Navarra, one of the best place tp find the elusive feline, is east of the Basque Country and West of Aragon. Head south and the slopes turn to vineyardfilled plains, where Navarra’s famous wines are produced. The region’s capital, Pamplona, known mostly for its bull-run-

ning festival, is here too. But in the north of Navarra, up in the mountains where the forests and meadows are, the domestic tabby’s ruthless cousin stalks its prey. At first sight, with her stripy beige and brown markings, she resembles a domestic tabby, she is much larger and more muscular than a house cat. Her fur is far denser too. But what really gives her away as a wildcat a distinct, separate species from the domestic cat is her distinctive bushy tail, heavily banded, longer and much wider than a house cat’s, finishing with a proud black-tipped stubby flourish rather than a slinky tapering off. But the wildcat isn’t easy to find, it of-

ten requires the help of expert guides to catch a glimpse of this untameable cat species, as secretive and elusive as the leopard. If you do wish to try, early March is a good time for wildcat spotting, when the snow thaws, wildcats leave their forest dens to hunt out in the open. If you see a wildcat, don’t make sudden movements or call to it – you will scare it off, probably for good. Take binoculars – if you see wildcats, they are likely to be at a distance. There are wildcats in Scotland too. But estimates suggest there may be only around 100 left.

BrItISh surfer has managed to fight off a shark that seized hold of his leg. Darren Mills was surfing in Porpoise Bay off the coast of new Zealand’s South Island on Friday when he was attacked.

The 28-year-old described how he felt “really lucky” to be alive after he punched the predator which had sunk its teeth into his leg and left three deep bite wounds from his thigh to his calf. Mills is originally from Crawley, West Sussex but now lives in Queenstown. Speaking from his

hospital bed, he recalled paddling across the back of the surf when he felt a “big thump” and saw the shark biting his leg. Mills said: “When it hit me and sort of like pushed me out and around a wee bit and yeah I just sort of realised what was going on and could see it and tried to punch it but it was more like a push. I was pretty scared it was going to come back but it didn’t and I managed to get into shore and … it was just really scary you know.” When he was washed to shore his friends rushed to his aid and put a tourniquet on his leg,

Although shaken up by the ordeal, Mr Mills is keen to get on his board again: “When it first happened I was like I’m not even getting in the bathtub again. I love it you know, I just want to get back and just surf again,” Last month a doctor was attacked while spear fishing. He fought off the shark with a knife, stitched up his wounds and headed to the nearest pub for a beer and last week in Australia a spear fisherman was killed by a shark.

People are being urged to “take action now” and avoid travelling due to possible widespread structural damage, fallen trees, power cuts and large waves. Forecasters are anticipating a month’s worth of rain for some areas by tonight – some 70mm of rain. The Met Office has issued a ‘danger to life’ red alert as 42,000 homes and businesses in South Wales have

lost power, while 12,400 in the West Midlands and 8,100 in the South West are also without electricity. Ireland is also severely affected by the storm and 260,000 homes have lost power in the worst outage for years, other areas have received “be prepared” and “be aware” warnings for snow, rain and wind. Six hundred troops have been deployed to help protect properties against the floods, filling sandbags and helping get medical assistance to the sick. Another 1,000 remain on stand-by. A new Cabinet committee is being set up to oversee the flooding recovery and a tax deferral scheme will help businesses hit by flooding.

Neknomination Death Toll Now 4

t

hE SOCIAl nEtWOrK drinking dare game neknomination, could now be responsible for four deaths in Britain alone. two men who died in the uK at the weekend were believed to be playing neknomination, which is thought to have originated in Australia but has spread quickly around the world through social media.

The first deaths in the UK linked to the craze came after two men in Ireland, Jonny Byrne who is thought to have died after jumping into a river and Ross Cummings, died earlier this month apparently taking part in the game. As reported in the Tenerife Weekly several weeks ago, Neknomination sees players film themselves downing various amounts and types of alcohol and daring each other to do stunts, then nominating someone to continue the game. They then post the video online. Participants are often dared to outdo the exploits of those who nominated them, with some players filmed consuming not only alcohol but dog food, engine oil and live goldfish. Isaac Richardson worked at Hostel Ordance

23

in Woolwich, south London, and was drinking in the pub downstairs when he died, an employee at the hostel said. Mr Richardson reportedly drank a cocktail of wine, whisky, vodka and lager before collapsing early last Sunday. South Wales Police say they are investigating whether Neknomination also played a part in the death of a 29-year-old in Cardiff named locally as Stephen Brooks, Officers and paramedics were called to the Rumney area early on Sunday after receiving reports of a man collapsing while taking part in Neknomination. A police spokesman said: “Officers investigating his death on behalf of HM Coroner have received information regarding the so-called neck and nominate game. Inquiries are continuing and a post-mortem is taking place.” .Alcohol Concern chief executive Eric Appleby said: “It is devastating for family and friends to lose someone in this way. “This lethal ‘game’ shows just how hard we have to work to de-normalise binge-drinking among young people. But it’s not just about young people. They take their cues from society’s attitude to drinking and it’s this we have to change for all our sakes.”

The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre

O

n FEBruArY 29th 1929, four men dressed as police officers entered the headquarters of George Clarence Moran, better known as gangster, Bugs Moran, on north Clark Street in Chicago, once inside they lined seven of Moran’s henchmen against a wall, and shot them to death. the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, as it is now called, was the culmination of a gang war between arch rivals Al Capone and Bugs Moran. “Bugs” Moran ran the North Side gang in Chi-

cago during the bootlegging era of the 1920s. He fought bitterly with “Scarface” Al Capone for control of smuggling and trafficking operations in the Windy City. Throughout the 1920s, both survived several attempted murders. On one notorious occasion, Moran and his associates drove six cars past a hotel in Cicero, Illionis, where Capone and his associates were having lunch and showered the building with more than 1,000 bullets, and is largely credited as being the first “drive -by shooting”. A $50,000 bounty on Capone’s head was the final straw. He ordered that Moran’s gang be destroyed. On February 14, a delivery of bootleg whiskey was expected at Moran’s headquarters. But Moran was late and happened to see police

officers entering his establishment. Moran waited outside, thinking that his gunmen inside were being arrested in a raid. However, the disguised assassins were actually killing the seven men inside. The murdered men included Moran’s best killers, Frank and Pete Gusenberg. Reportedly Frank was still alive when real officers appeared on the scene. When asked who had shot him, the mortally wounded Gusenberg kept his code of silence, responding, “No one, nobody shot me.” The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre actually proved to be the last confrontation for both Capone and Moran. Capone was jailed in 1931 and Moran lost so many important men that he could no longer control his territory. On the sev-

enth anniversary of the massacre, Jack McGurn, one of the Valentine’s Day hit men, was killed him in a crowded bowling alley with a burst of machine-gun fire. McGurn’s killer remains unidentified, but was likely Moran, though he was never charged with the murder. Moran was relegated to small-time robberies until he was sent to jail in 1946. He died in Leavenworth Federal Prison in 1957 of lung cancer. The Valentine’s Day Massacre has been immortalised in such films as “Some Like It Hot” and “The Untouchables” and the conflict between the warring gangsters has been the inspiration for film such as “The Godfather”, “Scarface” and The TV series “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire”.

Microbial art are images created using bacteria and these example use organisms swabbed from the armpits of celebrities then cultivated in petri dishes by scientists. Stephen Fry and Carol Vorderman are just two of the famous faces who were “petri”-fied! Microbiologist Zachary Copfer took pictures of stars then used the images as negatives on a petri dish and mixed in their swabs

to make the art. Using radiation, he burned away the bacteria to come up with these spore sketches for the Big Bang Fair, which will take place at the Birmingham NEC next month. Vorderman, 53, who is a patron of the fair, said: ‘The portrait looks brilliant – it’s one of a kind. I hope that by showing young people the unusual ways that science can be applied, they’re inspired to discover more for themselves.’ Other celebrities involved in the project are Richard McCourt, Kieron Richardson, Liz Bonnin, Dominic Wood, children’s TV hosts Dick and Dom, Hollyoaks’ Kieron Richardson and Bang Goes The Theory’s Liz Bonnin.

t WAS BAMBI’S lucky day when a young hero risked being swept away and drowned himself, when he didn’t hesitate in jumping in to rescue a terrified fawn from a deadly flash-flood. The young deer who would surely have drowned owes its life to Belal, a boy in his early teens who plunged into a river to save it from being washed away. The incident took place in Noakhali,

Bangladesh, when a young fawn became separated from its family during torrential rain and fast-rising floods. Wildlife photographer Hasibul Wahab said: ‘The river was so full of water and it was high tide so we thought he might drown. My friend was even ready to jump into the river to save the boy – but he made it. It is common for deer to be swept away in the rainy season and people often try to help, Mr Wahab was told. ‘It was a phenomenal sight,’ The brave boy believed to be in his

early teens fearlessly risked his own life to save the helpless baby deer. Disappearing beneath the fast moving murky waters, onlookers were unsure whether the boy was going to appear again, then he suddenly resurfaced, defiantly holding the young fawn aloft in one hand above his head as he plunged through the surging river. When he finally made it to the other side the locals cheered as the deer was reunited with its family. Bambi.

WHEN BORING STARS TRY TOO HARD TO BE INTERESTING

l

Et’S FACE it, the most intriguing thing about actor Shia laBoeuf is his name kind of means “beef”, I mean he’s most famous for transformers and everyone watching that are there for the giant space robots!

But the man who was the worst thing about Indiana Jones IV (and that’s saying something), lately seems desperate to be regarded as a strange, tormented artist...or something. LaBeouf stormed out of a press conference promoting his new film, Lars von Trier’s mainstream porn flick ‘Nymphomaniac’ at the Berlin Film festival last week when a reporter’s question as to whether the actors were worried about the film’s sex scenes elicited the response: “When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they

think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much.” He then walked out leaving LaBeouf’s co-stars, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Stellan Skarsgard, and Stacy Martin looking a little miffed. It wasn’t even original nonsense, LaBeouf’s line was borrowed from French football player Eric Cantona, who baffled reporters with it in the mid-1990s following his suspension for a flying kick on a heckler. He later appeared on the red carpet at the Berlin Film Festival wearing a paper bag emblazoned with the words “I’m not famous any more”. At least he bothered to wear a tuxedo, at the press meeting he looked like he’d slept in a skip.

The grisly reason we Celebrate valentines

n

ext time you buy your special loved one a Valentine card, bunch of flowers, posh meal or a box of heart-shaped chocolates; just remember... you’re celebrating a beheading!

On February 14 around the year 278 A.D., Valentine, a holy priest in Rome in the days of Emperor Claudius II, was executed. Under the rule of Claudius the Cruel – great name, Rome was involved in many unpopular and bloody campaigns. The emperor had to maintain a strong army, but was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. Claudius

believed that Roman men were unwilling to join the army because of their strong attachment to their wives and families. Claudius’ solution to this annoyance was to ban all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, and being a true romantic, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Valentine was arrested and dragged before the Prefect of Rome, who condemned him to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off, he really worked at earning his name then! The sentence was carried out on February 14, on or about the year 270. Legend also has it that while in jail, St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it “From Your Valentine.” For his great service, Valentine was named a saint after his death. In truth, the exact origins and identity of St. Valentine are unclear. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “At least three different Saint Valentines, all of them martyrs, are mentioned in the early martyrologies under the date of 14 February.” One was a priest in Rome, the second one was a bishop of Interamna (now Terni, Italy) and the third St. Valentine was a martyr in the Roman province of Africa.

Legends vary on how the martyr’s name became connected with romance. The date of his death may have become mingled with the Feast of Lupercalia, a pagan festival of love. On these occasions, the names of young women were placed in a box, from which they were drawn by the men as chance directed. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius decided to put an end to the Feast of Lupercalia, and he declared that February 14 be celebrated as St Valentine’s Day. However, when it became customary for forgetful men to rush into 24 hour service stations for some wilting daisies – remains unclear!

Spotlight on… The Olive Garden

T

his article is not a paid advertisement, nor a scathing review (if we don’t rate it, it won’t be in here), this is simply a helpful guide to hopefully make your time in Tenerife – be it long or short – a more enjoyable experience! When you go to the Olive Garden you end up going back. I know I did. You’ll also end up taking family, partners (if you didn’t go there initially with them), visiting friends and even employers. I know I did. It will often be a frustrating revisit because what you had the last time was so good, but everything else you’ve tried on multiple visits has also been great, and the new things they’re constantly putting on their mouthwateringly diverse menu also looks fantastic. I know it was for me. I first came across this little gem years ago on a stroll along Los Cristianos seafront when my parents were over. Somehow inheriting longer legs than both of them I was a little way ahead so I stopped outside this unassuming little place to read the specials on the various boards outside. The way everything looked and was described, sounded delicious, so the next day we

tried the breakfast. Not so long ago you couldn’t find a decent fry-up, but now many places are fairly good, but the OG breakfast is in a different league; English, Scottish, Irish or vegetarian, they come with thick doorstops of hot-buttered homemade white or granary bread (my wife often has the veggie although she’s a carnivore- the homemade veggie sausage is that good). I could go on about the food forever but I’ve only got one page! At least 80% of the meals served are homemade, their breakfasts, toasties and meal deals are incredible value for money and the portions have beaten some of my friends, renowned for their hearty appetites (yes Spud, I mean you) with ease - the burgers of all varieties have to be seen to be believed. I simply have to mention the Balti curry nights which

are very popular, the chefs make all the curries from scratch, with all the usual suspects on the menu plus some really different ones for the adventurous (I tried the “devil’s ashes” curry, made with ghost chillies -not for the faint hearted!) great service, friendly staff, an excellent choice of delicious food from a great menu that won’t break the budget. All those years ago when I first went, it was often quite empty, now it’s a buzzing little eatery... just shows what great food and word of mouth can do!

Ith ACtOrS like Bryan “Walter White” Cranston and perennial bald baddie Mark Strong rumored to be in the running for the Man of Steel’s arch enemy, Warner Bros have thrown an interesting curveball by casting the young star of “the Social network” Jesse Eisenburg as the the billionaire philanthropist/supervillain.

It’s shaping up to be a cracking cast and an interesting angle on the characters we know so well, with a world weary aging Batman, a young

cocky super intelligent Lex, this could be really good-although I would have loved to see Heisenberg go all Breaking Bad on Kal-El’s ass! Jeremy Irons don the butler suit to become the latest Alfred and if his Twitter feed is anything to go by, The Rockwho was also mentioned as a

potential Lex, could be the new Green Lantern. The Rock uploaded a picture with the hashtag “#JohnStewartCanStillWhupSupermansAss” in reference to the 2nd Green Lantern after Hal Jordan, who was played by Ryan Reynolds (in the much maligned GL movie) retired.

t SEEMS nOt a day goes by without a well known actor being linked to next year’s highly anticipated new Star Wars movie known only as Episode 7, the latest is no stranger to movie mega franchises, having already starred in harry Potter, Batman and soon the new Planet of the Apes saga. Gary Oldman has become the latest actor to reveal talks with the makers of Star Wars: Episode VII. ‘They’ve called,’ says Oldman, with Jj Abrams’s debut Star Wars feature due to shoot this year Oldman admitted he had been in discussions but gave no indication as to which role he might be playing in JJ Abrams’s revival of the long-running saga, and made it clear the matter was far from sealed. Speaking to Sky Movies while promoting José Padilha’s RoboCop remake, the acclaimed British actor said: “They’ve called, I don’t know if it’s, er … You know, I’m more cynical about it now. I’ll believe it when I’m on the plane home. The deal isn’t done, but yeah, they’ve inquired. I mean Planet of the Apes, Harry Potter, Batman and Star Wars ... bloody hell!” Oldman was referring to his roles in many of the best-known fantasy film sagas of all time. Other actors rumoured to have been approached include Alex Pettyfer, Saoirse Ronan, Michael Fassbender, Girls star Adam Driver, Hugo

Weaving (a rumoured Grand Admiral Thrawn), Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Pegg. Zac Efron is the latest name tipped for a leading role: “I just went and met with [the producers]. So I don’t know. It would be cool. I love [the Star Wars movies], I love them, but…who knows?” Fans of the long-running franchise have voiced their concerns about the potential casting decision on Twitter, with one writing: “please don’t do this Disney!” Another recurring rumour involves a young female protagonist with American Horror Story’s Taissa Farmiga tipped to be the hot favourite. Back when Matthew Vaughn was tipped to direct Star Wars: Episode VII (before J.J. Abrams took the job), there was a rumor going around that he had pitched a version where Chloë Moretz – star of Vaughn’s Kick-Ass comic book movie – would portray the protagonist; most likely, a young Jedi and daughter to Han Solo and Leia Skywalker (i.e. some variation of the character named Jaina in the Star Wars “Expanded Universe” books that take place post-Return of the Jedi). Breaking Bad’s Jesse Plemons (the psychotic Todd) is also being considered for a role. The stars of the original trilogy, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford, finally confirmed last week they will return for the next instalment.

EnEDICt GArrEtt, a stripper in the production Dreamboys has got his confidence back after receiving a revolutionary new technique which tattoos follicles onto balding spots: the actor/ stripper 33, said:

‘My father was always very thin up top and we always made fun of him. I never thought it would turn on me, ‘I started thinning about seven or eight years ago. Other people started pointing it out to me first because, of course, I can’t see the back of my head. ‘I became more aware of it when I was in the production Dreamboys and I was surrounded by all these spritely young things up on stage. I focused on it more because I was in such an aesthetically centred industry.’ Benedict tried a hair thickening spray to cover up the bald spot: ‘It does look like hair but you have to watch out for the rain as you can end up with black running down your face in public, and if you forget to wash it out before bed you wake up with a black stain all over your pillow. I was fed up with my spray-on hair leaving black stains everywhere! Sometimes I would go to friends’ houses and lean against a white wall, then when

I walked away it would be black, which was a bit awkward. Apart from anything else it’s really expensive at £16 a can.’ The treatment is called Scalp Micro Pigmentation and was developed by HHC (His Hair Clinic). It works by depositing small tattoos onto the scalp in order to replicate hair growth. Men are left with a freshly shaved look for a fraction of the price and pain of any hair transplant. The technique, was developed by Ian Watson, who founded HHC after he developed alopecia following the death of his 32 year-old brother Paul, from cancer. He asked Paul’s widow, Ranbir Rai-Watson, to find the finest pen she could get to draw dots onto his scalp, hoping to emulate the look of a shaved head, and the seed of the idea was formed. The treatment ranges in price depending on what area you wish to be treated with costs ranging between £500 - £3,000: ‘I think in the long run it’s pretty cost effective. I’ve not actually sat down and done the maths but if you think that I was spending £16 a week on a spray that stains my sheets, it seems to work out.’

I l l I A M rOAChE’S walk of freedom from court was no surprise to me. how can anyone prove, 40 years after the fact, that they were assaulted in any way by a particular person? the facts in this case changed from day to day. the police should have looked at the details of the case with a sharper eye. The case must have cost thousands of pounds and an innocent and kind man’s name has been muddied. He was a good friend of my grandfathers. They would play golf together on occasion and I remember sitting next to him at a concert that my grandfather was conducting.

Thankfully, his fate wasn’t as bad as another man who was found innocent of molesting a child. Peter Adamson who played Len Fairclough

was sacked by Granada despite being found not guilty. I hope that the mud doesn’t stick to Bill.

How could anyone smoke in the same space as their beloved children? It is beyond any comprehension. Apart from children in cars, smoking is as dangerous as using a mobile phone. The usual brigade of nutters is blaming the government for the situation. They don’t have a clue what they are talking about. This year is a particularly strange year for

weather so far. Night times in Tenerife are particularly cold. I hardly ever need my radiator, but this year it has been switched on every night. Other countries have suffered flooding too with parts of mainland Spain in a similar situation and the Spanish people aren’t rushing to blame the government. How can the weather be the government’s fault. What on earth do they expect them to do? It has taken everyone by surprise. What a shame we can’t blame Michael Fish anymore.

as he says . How on earth did we arrive at a situation where there is no credible, powerful figure from international football, who is prepared to challenge Blatter? hill who runs the annual nessie spotting contest, the three only entries were obviously other things

William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams said: .”Although we had three entries, one was a wave, one a duck and the other wasn’t from Loch Ness - even the one other sighting for the year that wasn’t entered was a video of a wave.” In 2001Italian geologist Luigi Piccardi put forward a theory that seismic activity may underlie the majority of supposed monster sightings around the Scottish lake. Piccardi said “Loch Ness is exactly on the fault zone. When there are small shocks, it can create a commotion on the water surface. Along the fault there can be gas emissions, which can create large bubbles on the surface. There are many surface effects which can be linked to the activity of the fault.” What was once arguably the most iconic photo of Nessie , published in Daily Mail in 1934, was later revealed to have been staged. The “Surgeon’s P h o t o g r a p h ” purported to be the first photo of a “head and neck”. Dr. Wilson claimed he was looking a t t h e loch when h e saw the monster,

grabbed his camera and snapped five photos. After the film was developed, only two exposures were clear. The first photo (the more publicised one) shows what was claimed to be a small head and back. The second one, a blurry image, attracted little publicity because it was difficult to interpret what was depicted. The image was revealed as a fake in The Sunday Telegraph dated 7 December 1975. Essentially, it was a toy submarine bought from F.W. Woolworths with a head and neck made of plastic wood, built by Christian Spurling, the son-in-law of Marmaduke Wetherell, a big game hunter who had been publicly ridiculed in the Daily Mail, the newspaper that employed him. Spurling claimed that to get revenge, Marmaduke Wetherell committed the hoax, with the help of Chris Spurling (a sculpture specialist), his son Ian Marmaduke, who bought the material for the fake, and Maurice Chambers (an insurance agent), who asked surgeon Robert Kenneth Wilson to offer the pictures to the Daily Mail.

HoMe AnD gArDening By Linda Barratt

W

Mirror Mirror on The wall.......

Ell, I FOr one am convinced it’s not me in there, and I swear hand on heart a certain editor here only ever sees Darth Vader...so yea we all have a good idea as to how versatile the reflection from a mirror can be; but what about the versatility of mirrors in your home or garden? From boudoir decadence to formal living, mirrors can form a tremendous impact to any space around us creating warmth and depth. they can in fact be one of the best tools in the small space owners back pocket, and my own personal opinion is that you can never have too many no matter the size of them or your space. What I want you to do is look beyond grooming, to expansion, space and light by using glass mirror. From standard rectangles to unique shapes and designs and to creating your very own art using broken pieces of mirror. Make a mirror become more than something you merely look into.....but into something that you actually want to look at. In living rooms i suggest that you go super large creating even more light with its big reflection. Place your mirrors to reflect and draw all eyes to items such as a magnificent chandelier, treasured ornaments or flower displays. While larger mirrors can be quite pricey, and many of us don’t have the budget for such things, consider gathering yourself together a collection of differing shape and framed smaller mirrors and paint all the frames the same colour. Group them all together on a wall in the same area. It will immediately open

up the space, plus it’s a good functional place to stop and check yourself over before leaving the home. The bathroom is of course one of the more obvious places to hang a mirror, but you don’t have to go with the obvious. Choose a bold ornate design. In fact if you have a separate cloakroom for your guest’s use- go lavish in there too. Try placing one next to your dining table, like you see in many restaurants around the world, this allows for the use of softer lighting. Think of it as mood lighting where you can relax whilst enjoying your meal. Into the kitchen...and why not...think backsplashes...what a perfect place for reflection and light. Why not even behind your stove top. That’s a traditionally dark area. Ok they are bound to get a little greasy or dirty eventually, it’s not like mirrors don’t clean up easily. A mirror will bounce any available light around, not only making it easier to see the meal you’re preparing, but also a more enjoyable place to stand. The bedroom...Well i ‘m all ears for

the interest of feng shui here. Did you know that a mirror directly facing your bed is said to bring the energy of the third party - your reflection into a relationship thus causing harm and that it also depletes your personal energy when you need it the most, at sleep; a time that your body is doing the most of its repair work....bet this little gem of information has you rushing to your boudoir looking where you have placed yours, fear not ,apparently your days of waking up tired are easily solved by angling your mirrors and placing them even a little offset from the actual bed. Of course you could bring luxurious decadence into your home with mirrored furniture. It really can fit into any type of design and style you have in your home.It truely perks up any space or room with its sparkly exterior. As for the old superstition of it being unlucky to break a mirror turn it around to your advantage by creating something beautiful for your home or garden. It is surprisingly simple...let me take you through

the method used to design a broken mirror top for any table, indoor or outdoor used, and from this method you can yourself adapt for broken glass coverage of any of your own preferred item, or create your own personal piece of wall art. Firstly of course you will need your chosen table for coverage plus the follwing items:- A broken mirror ( or purchased mirror tiles ) Hammer, Tile nipper, Mirror mastic (glue) Grout (if for outside use make sure you purchase waterproof) Safety glasses and gloves.

here’s how its Done :1. Using a grocery bag or layers of

newspaper place your glass in the bag or in between thick layers of newspaper then (wearing your safety glasses and gloves throughout), use the hammer to create smaller pieces. Tile nippers can be used if you want to control the size of your pieces if you have a particular pattern in mind and need more random and angular pieces. If you do have a design in mind, then sketch it onto your table top ready to fill in with mirror pieces but do keep your shapes and designs simple when working with mirror glass as you don’t have a palate of colours to work with as you would with typical tile mosaic work. 2. Squirt a small amount of mirror glue onto the back of each piece of mirror and glue into place either randomly or according to your design. When you place each piece, wiggle it around a little to spread out the glue on the back. Remember you can still use your tile nippers

to cut pieces to fit your design better if you wish. Cover the table with mirror pieces leaving approximately one eighth inch spaces between for grouting. Leave the glue to set overnight. 3. Mix your grout and wearing rubber gloves scoop a handful into the center of the mosaic. Smooth the grout into the spaces between the mirror pieces with your gloved hand until completely filled. Now, slide the side of your gloved hand around the surface of the mosaic to remove excess grout. Allow the grout to dry for an hour before cleaning off the surface with a damp sponge. Let the grout dry completely, overnight, and then clean the surface thoroughly with the sponge and dry cloth. When using mirror i would recommend that you add moulding to the edges now that your mosaic is completed as a safety precaution. Speaking of safety precaution...a little advice...whenever you’re out and about walking, hiking or backpacking here in Tenerife ...carry a small compact mirror in your pocket....Its reflective quality can and does locate and save lives.

you could be a purveyor of inspired ideas that benefit you and others. a lively energy might encourage your curiosity to delve into all kinds of subjects in order to find answers, meaningful connections, and creative opportunities. if an aspect of your life seems to need some extra stimulus, you might locate it when you mingle with folks who are on your same cutting-edge wavelength. Take care with finances, however, as Mercury turns retrograde this week.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

This might be a good week to get involved in artistic or cultural programs, take in a movie, or dive headlong into a good book. current influences might also encourage a shopping spree in which you’re attracted to items that spontaneously catch your attention. in this instance, a little budgeting could keep you from overspending. Give yourself a limit and you might find that you have a more enjoyable time seeking those smart bargains.

Aries 21 March to 19 april

acting on impulse could be stressful as far as relationships go. Try to avoid purely selfish interests if you can, as they may not win you any fans. However, sharing honest thoughts with a spouse or close friend would be a good use of your energy. as Mercury rewinds as of February 6, it might not be the best time to promote work or business projects or buy big-ticket items. However, if you have no option, try to keep receipts, paperwork, and files, as you may need them.

taurus 20 april to 20 May

an ease in expressing your thoughts and emotions could make this a good time to organize a get-together or fun celebration. This can also be a positive work week so long as you don’t try to run the show yourself. being part of a team can make a difference to your overall progress. even though someone in authority may be hard to deal with, your patient determination could win them over. later, take care of a domestic or business matter responsibly, as cutting corners could cause problems.

Gemini 21 May to 21 June

Mercury rewinds from February 6 until February 28 in your career sector, so this might not be the best time to organize job interviews or crucial meetings with your boss because things might not go as planned. if you need to commit to a plan or project, try to keep track of important documents and paperwork, as you may need them further down the line. changes at this time could be inevitable. later, there will be fun, too!

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

The potential for surprising news on the job or career front could trigger thoughts about what the future holds. This week’s blend of energies could have you on the edge of your seat, yet there is also a possibility of making a few changes of your own that could surprise your boss or employer. However, as Mercury enters its retrograde phase, as of February 6, think carefully before you make any moves. your time may be better spent researching your options for now.

leo 23 July to 22 august

The answer to all your problems might appear to be a quick getaway. Tempting as that may be, it probably won’t resolve your issues in the way that you hope. as Mercury rewinds as of this week, you might find that you’re more in touch with feelings that might have been pushed to the back of your awareness. as you let them surface, you could discover that what you really want isn’t an instant fix but something more intangible and deeply satisfying on a soul level.

Virgo 23 august to 22 September

This week could get off to a positive start, especially if your social antenna is tuned to suggestions. and you never know - an invitation could lift your spirits. Mercury, your personal planet, marches backward starting this week, so beware of misunderstandings with your partner, love interest, or your latest squeeze. an edgy influence might encourage you to push ahead with a budding romance sooner than is wise. in this instance, it might help to be sensitive to someone’s needs and feelings.

libra 23 September to 23 october

could a relationship reach a critical peak this week? The Moon in aries early on highlights an edgy connection that might push you to do or say something on the spur of the moment. Perhaps you’ve desired change for some time and dream of more stability and greater harmony. in this instance, you might have to take a step in the opposite direction and push for what you want. you may soon get to like your assertive side.

Scorpio 24 october to 21 november

The opposites seem to be at play, bringing pleasure and opportunities for spontaneous fun, as well as a chance to make like a hermit and hide when things get to be too much. if you feel stretched in romance, you might need to retreat to work out your next move. once you’ve had a chance to recharge, you will be back out there and ready for some more love adventures. Guard against sent or received mixed signals to save embarrassment.

Sagittarius 22 november to 21 december

Midweek you may feel alert, lively, and eager to connect with new people, move ahead with a creative project, or even take the first step with a new romance. you might need to tread with care with your finances, as a powerful transit could cause you to rethink your strategy. This isn’t a good time to make a major purchase - reorganize your budget instead. Venus turns direct in your personal financial zone, which could help ease any delays you’ve been experiencing.

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January

electronic equipment failures could have you scrambling, especially as Mercury will rewind from this week until February 28. it might help to back up those important files and documents, as this is one of those times when a crucial piece of information could disappear. aside from this, your love life continues to be lively and positive, although an edgy influence in your home and family sector could highlight a disagreement. Getting this sorted out sooner rather than later will help keep the peace.

‘Snot’ Jellyfish Washes Ashore

hE COnSIStEnCY of a jellyfish which washed ashore in tasmania has led to scientists describing it as ‘snotty’. Scientists are baffled by what could be a new species.

lyfish do bloom as a normal part of their life cycle, but not usually this many. There’s something going on and we don’t know what it is.’

The 1.5-metre creature (4ft 11in) was discovered by a family last month as they collected shells on a beach near Hobart, Tasmania. They took a photograph and sent it to the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO).Scientists say the sticky blob could be a type of lion’s mane – or ‘snot’ – jellyfish, but they have never seen one so big before. Researchers believe this previously unidentified giant jellyfish could be a new type. Lisa-Ann Gershwin who has been studying jellyfish for 20 years said she had heard stories of a big white-ish creature with a distinctive pink tinge in the middle, rumours of its existence in Tasmanian waters had been circulating for more than a decade: ’I’m just rapt by it, honestly. It’s such an amazing find. It boggles the mind. I mean, it’s so big. I knew that the species gets fairly large, but I didn’t know that it gets that large. We don’t actually know what’s going on that’s led, not only to this species, but many, many types of jellyfish blooming in massive numbers. Jel-

ECEntlY we started our lunch time Carvery at Vivo, and with it came some wonderful new

homemade desserts. One of those desserts is our carrot cake, which is quickly

becoming one of our best selling pud’s. One lady said to me last Wednesday “I have travelled the world and eaten some carrot cake, but this has to be one of the nicest”. Once I gave Jake, this recipe

- (who works alongside us in the kitchen) he is in charge of this beauty, and has quite simply made this recipe - with a few tweeks - his own! It’s very easy, tasty, and wonderfully moist and can be frozen down to use at a later date.

Ingredients: For the Carrot Cake 500g plain flour 4 teaspoons ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons nutmeg

Tenerife Weekly - 14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

400g caster sugar 600ml vegetable oil 4 eggs

350g grated carrots 2 table spoons baking powder 100ml milk

Ingredients: For the Cream Cheese Frosting

250g soft cream cheese

400g icing sugar

MEthOD:

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees C. Grease and line with baking powder either 2 round baking tins if you want to make it sandwich style or use a very large oblong cake tin to make flapjack style Individual pieces. Grate the carrots and set them aside in a very large bowl. Now in a food mixer, add all the other ingredients and mix well. It will become very thick and paste like. Once it is all combined, pour it into the grated carrots and work the mixture thoroughly so everything is evenly distributed throughout the mixture. Transfer it to your baking tin(s). Bake it very slowly at 160 degrees for approximately 1 1/4 hours or until the cake is firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow it

to slowly cool. When its rested and down to room temperature make the cheese frosting. Sift the icing sugar into a bowl and whisk in the cream cheese until smooth. Spread evenly in between the cake (if you are going to sandwich it together, then pour the remaining on top and spread it until it is evenly coated. Place it in the fridge until you are ready to serve! If you wish you can add a good handful of chopped walnuts to the mixture, but this is purely optional and gives it that extra crunch. Just a note..... if you can’t be bothered to make it yourself, or want to try it first,, get down to Vivo for our lunch menu served 124pm Monday to Friday or Sunday 126pm its ready and waiting for you!

limey, where has this week gone ???

It’s been an eventful week down here at Vivo, we’ve had Channel 5 in and out all week filming their documentary all about retired ex-pats enjoying life out here on the rock, Eddie and Sophie from the film crew loved it at Decades, we all got in front of the cameras, we’re all now “V” list celebrities… so look out for yours truly in May when it airs !!! As well as the film crew, this week we launched the Vivo Mid-week Carvery… which I’ve been tucking into

everyday, I’m stuffed !!! ...I do love a bit of stuffing !!! Speaking of stuffing, I told you about Boyzone’s Keith Duffy’s stuffing almost escaping from his banana hammock last week, well, it’s the Final tomorrow and sideshow Perry is the favourite to win - possibly the last ever Splash final, as ratings have been a bit on the soggy side… good luck everyone !!! So, from water to ice… last week’s Dancing on Ice 80’s Special saw Guh Guh Guh Gareth Gates voted off despite an impressive Wham Tribute complete with the vilest wig I’ve ever seen !!! ...

He looked more like Mo from Eastenders than George Michael !!! Last time I saw Guh Guh Gareth he was in O’ Neills…and he hadn’t been seen since… I was beginning to think Geordie John had him as his new shuh shuh shot boy !!! Oooh just to let you know… I’ve been rehearsing all week for the upcoming Barry Grey film…in an attempt to get rid of my white lines, I’ve turned 50 shades of red and I’ve burnt my lips, so now my lips are sealed… literally !!! ‘Til next week…Eat Carvery…and Keeep Sparkling !!!

MAKE TRAFFIC JAMS HISTORY H ave you noticed how much traffic there is on Tenerife’s roads lately? It doesn’t seem to matter what time of the day i join the TF1 at Estasur theres almost always a tailback from Guaza, and Las Americas seems to get more congested everyday. But our traffic jam grievances are minute compared to the 10 cities listed on this page. Regardless of how big or small tat traffic jam is, buying one of these could make queuing a thing of the past... for you anyway. The Renault Kwid concept has a small quadcopter that can be released from its roof, making it the world’s first car with its own traffic spotting drone. At just 3.6m long, the Kwid looks uncannily like a Tonkatoy, and boasts two wheel drive and room for two in the cockpit. It is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated

to a dual-clutch transmission, and according to the company it’s been designed to take an electric engine as well. The concept also has upward opening doors, and is designed to be driven off road. Renault hope the craft will be able to go ahead to spot what is causing jams, or look for potential problems. The quadcopter is stored on the roof, and a small panel opens to allow it to fly, when the drive presses a button, a flap opens and the drone is free the fly. It can automatically follow the car, or be sent ahead along a preprogrammed route. Live video and other information is displayed on a dashboard mounted tablet as it flies, , allowing the driver to see exactly what is happening. and it can automatically return to the car at the press of a button. The drone is controlled from a tablet computer mounted on the dashboard and Re-

nault claim the Kwid could be on sale in two years. The concept The Kwid was revealed at the Delhi motor show in India, the first time Renault has unveiled a concept car outside of Europe. Renault said: ‘The vehicle’s robust, yet fun design, along with its technology-driven features, is targeted at meeting the needs of young customers in these markets. This concept car offers a fun, yet robust design combined with hyper connectivity.’

Worst Traffic Cities On Earth

Y

ou probably think your daily commute is bad, you probably sound the horn and yell obscenities at fellow commuters during your daily morning road rage.

Increased traffic volume or not, Tenerife’s congestion problems would make the residents of these cities laugh, however, consider yourself lucky that you don’t have to battle traffic in the world’s worst traffic-congested cities. Here are the top 10 worst traffic cities in the world 1. Milan, Italy Consider yourself lucky that in Tenerife you don’t have to contend with more than just cars, trucks, taxis who think they own the

roads and the BLOODY TRAIN. Commuters in Milan have to watch out for cars, trucks, motorcycles, mopeds, a multitude of cyclists… and sheep, which and prone to blocking roads in stubborn herds. 2. Detroit, Michigan, USA It’s not called the “Motor City” for nothing— Detroit is the heart and soul of America’s auto industry, and commuters feel the result of this, spending a good majority of time stuck in traffic jams and inhaling exhaust fumes. 3. London, England England’s capital makes the top ten. Known worldwide for our politeness and good manners, most visitors change their mind about that rumour when stuck in traffic. The city is ranked fifth for the nastiest traffic jams in the entire world!

4. Brussels, Belgium Their namesake vegetable has been known to create “exhaust fumes”, something city itself experiences has plenty of in some of the most evil traffic jams around the globe. 5. San Francisco, California, USA “If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to”... take a book, San Franciscans suffer an annual average of approximately 50 extra hours wasted in traffic congestion. 6. Paris, France Oo la la…Paris might be the city of lights and sites, but it’s also the city renowned for traffic – you’ll certainly get an eyeful (sorry) of brake lights “c’est pas terrible!” 7. Dallas, Texas, USA The southern USA is known for its gracious hospitality - except when merging onto the

I-20, I-30, or the I-45—the majorly packed metropolitan freeways in the state. 8. Antwerp, Netherlands The average commute in Antwerp is known to take 40-percent longer than it should. Traffic jams here are considered the most frustrating in the world. 9. Los Angeles, California, USA The city of angels is known for its beautiful weather, but one look at the cloud of smog over the city gives a good indication of how bad the traffic can get here. 10. Rotterdam, Netherlands This huge shopping and tourist metropolis in the Netherlands is known for traffic jams all day, at all times of the day, every day, all the time, constantly.

Sam Smith was this year’s winner of the coveted Critics’ Choice, following in the successful footsteps of those who have gone before him, who include Adele, Florence & The Machine, Ellie Goulding, Jessie J, Emeli Sande and Tom Odell. bobsledder

bathroom breakout

A

MErICAn Bobsledder Johnny Quinn put his strength training to good use after he got stuck in a bathroom at the Winter Olympics. Quinn, a former NFL player and now a push athlete on Team USA’s two four-man sled, had no

alternative but to smash his way out after the lock in his bathroom got stuck after he had taken a shower. The athlete posted a photo on Twitter of his feat of strength after he had smashed the door down, with the hashtag #SochiJailBreak. “I was taking a shower and the door got locked/

jammed...,” Quinn wrote on his Twitter page @ JohnnyQuinnUSA. “With no phone to call for help, I used my bobsled push training to break out.” It was unclear whether Quinn would face disciplinary action or how much a replacement door might cost.

I

tAlIAn FOOtBAll club have released official proving that their player Joseph Minala is in fact 17, not 41 as quotes in the Senegal press suggesting that the player has admitted that he is 41 – and will turn 42 in August.

Minala is one of the youngest players in recent years to be promoted to the Lazio first-team. However on social media

OOGlE has taken a swipe at russia over its stance on gay rights with a rainbow coloured doodle as the Winter Olympics get underway in Sochi.

t

hrEE tIMES X-GAMES gold medalist Snowboarder Jenny Jones, has won Great Britain’s first medal at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. the 33-year-old claimed a bronze medal in the women’s slopestyle – the first medal the country has ever won on snow at the winter Games.

Jones wowed the judges with a clean run for the bronze medal, with Jamie Anderson (USA) winning gold while Finland’s Enni Rukajärvi won silver. Delighted Jenny said: ‘I am so happy right now, I knew I’d had a good run but there were plenty of people to come after me. I just told myself that I’d done my best and that was all that mattered.’

Last Friday internet search engine Google, posted a rainbow doodle featuring winter sports on its website with a quote from the Olympic charter written below the rainbow-colored image. The quote reads: “The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.” The doodle was directed towards Russia whose antigay policies have been a problem ahead of the Olympics since a gay propaganda law was instituted. The law prohibits statements and actions that condone non-traditional lifestyles to minors. Russian President Vladimir Putin supports the law, and has said that gay people are welcome as long as they leave children alone. Some companies, such as

sites he has been accused of being an age cheat, who is in fact much older than 17, claims which Minala’s agent has rubbished. Minala’s age was questioned after he posted a photo on Instagram, leading to claims that the player confessed to a reporter that he has been lying in order to earn money to send back to his family in Cameroon. However, Lazio said in a statement:

‘Lazio, referring to press reports relating to the age of player Joseph Minala, confirms the absolute legitimacy of the documentation filed with the federal authorities.’ The club hope that this will end the age speculation by publishing his official documents on their website, with the club insisting that his registration proves that he is 17.

google’s

rainbow Message

Chobani Yogurt and AT&T, have issued statements condemning the law, but sponsors of the Olympic Committee have not and now the International Olympic Committee has requested that athletes not inject political stances into the games, which has angered gay rights advocates. Google is not an Olympics sponsor and didn’t issue a statement concerning the doodle, Svetlana Anurova, a spokeswoman for Google in Russia, said:

“It speaks for itself.” Human Rights Campaign president Chad Griffin called for sponsors to condemn the anti-gay laws signed by Russian president Vladimir Putin in July. He said: ‘Google has made a clear and unequivocal statement that Russia’s anti-LGBT discrimination is indefensible, now it’s time for each and every remaining Olympic sponsor to follow their lead. The clock is ticking, and the world is watching.’

A

CElEBrItY BOXInG match between rapper DMX and George Zimmerman, the man cleared of shooting dead an unarmed teenager, has been cancelled. The controversial fight’s promoter Damon Feldman, who has organised a number of fights between stars, said the bout was called off after it provoked a wave of criticism and led to threats being made against him. The bout between the veteran rapper and Zimmerman had generated strong negative response. Many said that added attention for a controversial figure like Zimmerman was a bad idea all around. A “Cancel George Zimmerman’s ‘Celebrity’ Boxing match” Facebook page received 317,000 likes and civil rights leader Reverend Al Sharpton warned against glo-

rifying Zimmerman. Damon Feldman said last Saturday on Twitter: “This was the wrong person to put in the ring and define celebrity boxing,” referring to Zimmerman. He said he was scrapping plans because “I’d rather be happy and make people happy.” Zimmerman was cleared in 2013 of the second-degree degree murder and manslaughter of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida. The neighbourhood watch volunteer said he opened fire on Martin in self-defence, citing the state’s ‘stand your ground’ law. This allows someone in fear of their life to use lethal force. The case sparked a debate about race and self-defence laws and led to protest rallies in cities nationwide. He had said the contest, which was due to last three rounds, would motivate him to get back into shape and raise money for charity. The announcement of

the fight was made on what would have been victim Trayvon Martin’s 19th birthday. DMX spokesman Domenick Nati said in a statement: . “The George Zimmerman fight is cancelled. DMX never agreed to the fight and we thank you for all of the support from DMX’s fans.” .DMX, real name Earl Simmons, was reportedly selected out of 15,000 applicants after Zimmerman issued a challenge for anyone to step into the ring with him. DMX apparently earlier told TMZ when asked about the chance to fight Zimmerman: “I am going to beat the living **** out him … I am breaking every rule in boxing to make sure I **** him right up.” The father-of-twelve, who has been arrested in the past for drug and driving offences, reportedly added that he would urinate on Zimmerman’s face once the fight was over.

Club Ademi- one Tough Team

russian team O train for brazil photo courtesy of the Tenerife cabildo

n Saturday, Club Ademi tenerife played at the Sports Centre Costa Adeje College on the thirteenth day of the XXV Challenge Foundation Eleven league 1st national Division Group Wheelchair Basketball Center,

against BSr Cocemfe Puertallano.

The BSR returned to play a league game, and has very fond memories of last time (21/04/2012), because at that time at the CD Hercesa Alcalá (Complex Deportivo Towers in Los Olivos, Adeje) they achieved the long awaited ascent they had been looking for more than ten years and got it, winning by a 58-51 match. Since then, this day was “written in letters of gold” in the long history of Wheelchair Basketball Club Ademi Tenerife and of course the town of Villa de Adeje has become a “talisman” for BSR Ademi Tenerife. Before the start of the

game there was a minute of silence for the recently and sad death of a young student of the College Luther King South. The Game was played on this occasion in the College Hall Costa Adeje before more than 200 spectators who certainly enjoyed a totally different kind of basketball game and the ademista fans who regularly attend house matches, were very well prepared to support their team. Javier Martínez’s pupils began very strong match with a classic defense in any court with many changes and defensive help, which saw that reflected at the end of the first quarter with a clear advantage 20-4.

They began the second quarter with more of the same but with adjustments to the other side and with many rotations in the Ademi throughout the game. At the end of the second quarter it was a partial 13-14, and a final score of 33-18 at the break. The third quarter Began with yet more changes in the local side and all players contributed in the game, leaving a partial 14-7. In the fourth quarter, thanks to good play and the results displayed on the scoreboard with 5-10 and a final score of 52 -35, they finished the day in the league table in 3rd place and with a record of 5 wins out of 9 played.

Missed Chances Sink CD Tenerife

C

OnSIStEnCY is the elusive quality that Ayoze Perez needs to add to his sparkling skill set. With liverpool, Arsenal, and Everton talking of firm bids for the 10 goal striker he had a poor day highlighted by two missed chances at the start of the second half in the 2-0 defeat to Barcelona B. The usual more defensive

away formation saw Ayoze isolated up front, born again Borja and Aridane were both injured. January signing Edgar started wide on the left and impressed but chances were rare for Tenerife. Aitor Sanz gave a way a free kick after 25 minutes and a delightfully struck free kick from Denis eluded the defensive wall and Roberto to make it 1-0. The second half saw another new boy, Juanjo replace the ineffective Rivero to give Ayoze more backing but it was the wonder kid who was found

wanting with his two poor efforts, particularly a soft miss hit at the keeper. There was still hope, Suso took over from the injured Chechu but he had a very quiet half afternoon. Edgar couldn’t reach the ball in time for a shot when his chance came and Suso only got a bit of his head to a ball when the goalie got a firmer grip. Denis was involved again for the second goal, his pass unleashed Nieto, the Tenerife defence gave him too much room and he planted the ball in the net. The midfield struggled all

game to win and keep the ball, Cristo made things a little better when he replaced Ros but Barcelona always had plenty of

time and options. There was a late flurry, Sanz rising shot was no threat, Ayoze couldn’t get Cristo’s

cross under control, and Bruno headed wide. This week it’s a Saturday home game at 5pm against Zaragoza.

los Cristianos is beach volleyball heaven

B

Y thE tIME the Brazil Olympics of 2014 open most of Europe’s top beach volleyball players will have enjoyed the sun and sand of las Vistas beach in los Cristianos.

As ice creams are devoured and beers drained you can usually find intense training near the back of the beach. This week was a bumper crop with the ladies of Spain, Holland, Brazil, Austria, and Switzerland whacking the ball over the net and saving it from touching the ground. It’s a busy schedule for the professional players, Holland’s Madelein Meppelink is still getting to know her new playing partner Marleen Van Lersel

but they have to learn fast as she explained. “ With my previous team mate we got up to 11th in the World rankings but now we are 15th, we only became a team in November. The professional tour starts in April then the European Championships take place in Rome in June.” The ladies have an experienced coach leading Holland, Morph Bowes is the former GB boss. The Olympics will be a tough challenge for everyone. “Brazil have dominated the last three Olympics and on home sand will be favourites and the USA won’t be far behind.” London 2012 was full of beach athletes with Tenerife sand between their toes, look out for even more when the spotlight turns to the Copacabana.

lazaros To Steady iberostar Tenerife After Cup blitz

I

t WAS always a tall order but losing 102 - 60 to Barcelona in the Copa del rey quarter final left Iberostar tenerife shell shocked.

It was the showpiece weekend in Malaga for Spain’s ACB League and 300 fans made their way from La Laguna to support their team but losing Blago-

ta Sekulic with his midweek move to Turkey was a blow they never recovered from. The first quarter deficit of 22-16 gave them a chance but then the pounding started with scores of 3218, 21-14, and 27-12. Ricardo Uriz with 12 points and Nico Richotti with 11 showed some resistance but Barcelona had six players in double figures. There was also a finger injury for

Uriz to complete a bad day at the office. This Sunday Zaragoza are the visitors to La Laguna at 11.15 am and new Greek pivot Lazaros Papadopoulos will make his debut. The 2.10 metre tall 33 year old has plenty of experience with Real Madrid, Olimpiakos, and his last team PAOK Salonica and is a Greek international.

Q

uality and depth of squad can push CD Marino all the way into the Tercera Division promotion play offs. Mensajero arrived from La Palma in third place and looked a strong side but even when they took the lead after 75 minutes Marino stepped up a gear and were good value for a 2-1 win.

Both sides were a bit wary of each other early on, Airam had a good run at the visiting defence before they closed in on him, and Yeray probed at the other end with a shot that

whistled by the post. Lamine is always up for a pop at goal, his strike was a bit high and wide but served notice of things to come. Mensajero worked well as a team, won the ball often, and were quick to notice the weak spots. Pulido was caught a couple of times drifting into the centre of defence leaving Yeray scope to get behind the Marino defence. Juanda needed a longer leg to reach a loose ball in front of the home goal, he only managed a touch and Alberto had time to gather the ball as it trickled towards him. At the other end Murci gave the visiting defence plenty of problems, he has legs like a giraffe, so many times he stretches out and hooks back a lost ball.

Tenerife Weekly - 14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

CD Marino Leapfrog Mensajero To Third

The striker showed a great turn in the box to put the ball in the Mensajero net but the ref had already blown for a foul. Muda tried a cheeky climb over Eslava but the ref spotted his foul, and a few minutes later Alberto was decisive and raced to claim the ball at the edge of his area as Mensajero pressed. It was finely balanced at half time but Marino came

back with a new determination, Hernandez just about managed to hold off Murci and their keeper Luis made do with scrambling away a free kick. The visitors were down to 10 men after Alfredo picked up a second booking with the second half barely 10 minutes old but Marino couldn’t punish them. Facundo Valiente replaced Josimar and added punch to the attack but it was

the La Palma side that made the breakthrough as Muda netted from a corner. A well flighted cross from the right fell perfectly for Pablo and he tied the scores with his head to set up a thrilling finale. Fran Alonso, another of the rising young Marino brigade arrived from the bench and caused mayhem in the visitors defence, he was unlucky with a Murci pass that

he couldn’t quite control, and then a header that flashed wide. A point would probably been ok for Marino but they want more these days and got their reward when Lamine put in a deep cross that Balduino controlled well before flicking it into the top corner of the net for the win. It’s off to Puerto de la Cruz this Sunday to hopefully extend the good run against Union Vera.
