HELLO ALL! As I’m writing this on Thursday evening, I’m awaiting the arrival of Channel 5, who are booked into Decades tonight as part of their research/filming for a documentary all about retired ex-pats living the highlife out here in Tenerife! It’s got all the tell-tale signs of being a cracking night as they are here to observe and film a good friend of ours Jackie Clark and TW columnist and my Mum-inlaw Linda Barratt! Eddie and So-

I’ve never heard this one before but sounds like it’s worth knowing. Plain White Flour-who knew ? Hi Marc, Once I was cooking some corn and stuck my fork in the boiling water to see if the corn was ready. I missed and my hand went into the boiling water.... A friend of mine, who was a Vietnam vet, came into the house, just as I was screaming, and asked me if I had some plain old flour...I Pulled out a bag and he stuck my hand in it. He said to keep my hand in the flour for 10 minutes which I did. He said that in Vietnam, this guy was on fire and in their panic, they threw a bag of flour all over him to put the fire out...well, it not only put the flour out, but he never even had a blister!!!!

So, I put my hand in the bag of flour for 10 minutes, and then pulled it out and had not even a red mark or a blister and absolutely NO PAIN. Now, I keep a bag of flour in the fridge and every time I burn myself, I use the flour and never ONCE have I ever had a red spot, a burn or a blister! Cold flour feels even better than room temperature flour. A Great miracle, if you ask me. Keep a bag of white flour in your fridge and you will be happy you did. I even burnt my tongue and put the flour on it for about 10 minutes, and the pain was gone and no burn. Try it! Don’t run your burn area under Cold water first, just put it right into the flour for 10 minutes and experience a miracle! Kind Regards David Gilroy

ment in the Fifty Shades trilogy that traces the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. The novel has topped best-seller lists around the world, including the United Kingdom and the United States. The series has sold over 90 million copies worldwide and been translated into 52 languages, and set the record as the fastest-selling paperback of all time. The recent announcement of the Honeymoon scenes being filmed here, has led to speculation that the movie will condense all 3 books into one production-as the Wedding doesn’t take place until the last part of the trilogy. The movie is due for release Valentine’s Eve 2015.

And now Santa Cruz Ayuntamiento’s urbanism councillor will meet next week with architects to discuss how to utilise the site in the future. One of the plans is to turn it into a leisure mountain leading to a beach-marina, and including a dedicated home for the Santa Cruz carnaval events. This is just the first of presumably several projects which will aim to develop the site and which the council will be considering over the next few weeks. Workers had been saying for some time that the refinery was being allowed to die quietly, with no formal announcement being made. Perhaps it is time to say out loud that the refinery is going. There really seems no other conclusion to draw. One wonders of course, where the money will come from to develop a leisure mountain and beach-marina, but presum-

ably private finance will play a part, and no doubt there will be quite a windfall for some lucky land owners and developers. Others will be pleased too, though. Environmentalists have been saying for a long time that it is a disgrace to have such polluting and explosive substances so close to a built-up city, and that the dangers were multiple and manifest. Whether its departure would have any effect on fuel prices here in the Canaries is pure speculation, of course, but Cepsa were at pains to say that the temporary stoppages would not affect the market because of reserves at the refinery. If these ran out, the company insisted, extra could be brought in from Huelva and Cádiz. What happens, however, when reserves are used up and no more can be created because the refinery no longer exists?

NEWS ON murderer answer Crimes THE ROCK of Violence by Video

two 31-year-old British men have been injured, one seriously, after jumping into an empty pool in a holiday apartment complex in Calle Las Verónicas in Playa de Las Américas. After emergency services received a call out shortly after 1am last Friday night, paramedics attended to find one of the men with a fractured skull and the other with ankle injuries. Both were taken by ambulance to Hospitén Sur while the national police investigate the incident. What an awful start to the year it’s been with accidents and deaths, and now another, with the death of a 37-yearold man who drowned on the coast off the Buenavista del Norte golf course at around 2.30pm last Sunday afternoon. Emergency services were called out with reports that someone was in difficulties in the sea, and a GES helicopter managed to rescue him and get him to the golf course. There they tried to resuscitate him, and their efforts were taken up by paramedics, together with a doctor and nurse from the Los Silos health centre. Sadly, however, they were unable to save him, and were finally able only to confirm his death at the scene. the theft of copper cables from the desalination plant at Las Galletas on Wednesday night is affecting more than a hundred farmers in the area, some of whom depend exclusively on the installation to irrigate their crops. The stolen cabling equates to a loss of some 15,000 euros for the facility, which is now studying implementing security or surveillance measures so that the plant does not become a potential goldmine for this type of thief. guardia Civil officers based at TFS have arrested a 39-year-old resident of Los Cristianos for drug trafficking. The man was detained in the arrivals hall after his nervousness aroused police suspicion. His luggage was searched, but it was inside his body that he was carrying the drugs, the confession he made being subsequently proven by xray. He was found to be carrying 40 capsules containing, in total, 407 grams of cocaine. He is now being processed by police. a 32-year-old motorcyclist has suffered serious head injuries after coming off his motorbike around 12.30 this lunchtime in Vera de Erques, Guía de Isora. Emergency services were called out and paramedics stabilized and immobilized him at the scene before transferring him to Candelaria hospital, where he remains in a very serious condition. It was only last Monday that a German motorcyclist was seriously injured while riding through the Teide national park (link): he is said still to be critically ill in HUC. a woman was rescued after being swept into the sea from the steps leading to the old harbour at Garachico at 8.15 this morning. A Guardia Civil patrol, working out of the Buenavista del Norte station, heard the woman’s cry for help and one officer threw a wooden pallet into the sea to keep her afloat in the strong waves, until he could get to her.The woman was transferred to the Icod de los Vinos health centre with slight injuries, but the officer although soaking wet was unharmed. a german pensioner has been hospitalised after being attacked and robbed in her own home in El Porís de Abona. Guardia Civil officers investigating the robbery say the lady, who lives alone, was gagged, beaten and left tied hand and foot for over eight hours. Officers confirm that cash and valuables were taken. the Cabildo is considering whether to charge for using the trails and other basic services such as exhibitions and guided tours at Teide. It’s an idea that is being look at “to improve the quality of the activities that are provided.” said the Minister of Environment, on the 60th anniversary of the declaration of this area as a National Park. It is clear that this measure would “not only help generate revenue but also create green jobs on the island.” Durban explained that charging for entering the natural environment is not yet possible because the current law does not allow it, so it would have to modify the rules, but, it is permissible to pay for activities like hiking.

Year aFter a santa Cruz court found Deyan Valentinov Deyanov guilty of the horrific beheading of Jennifer Mills Westley the bulgarian killer is standing trial at the Palacio de Justicia in the capital for two offences committed in the months leading up to the murder in los Cristianos on 13 May 2011. Sentenced to 20 years in a psychiatric unit in Sevilla and ordered to pay 100,000 euros compensation to his victims family it seemed that Tenerife could finally put the events behind them. The Mills Westley family and those present in the discount store hoped they could try to find some closure and move on with their lives. The slow process of law has now dragged up one last chapter in this grisly story with Deyanov, a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic accused of attacking security guard Jose Fermin Suarez with a rock on Los Cristianos sea front and knocking out two of his teeth. There is also a further charge of throwing bottles at a local complex. Answering the first charge by video conference Deyanov pleaded innocent saying it was self defence after the

guard and a colleague attacked him. The incident took place on 3rd January 2011 at 1 am on Avenida Juan Alfonso Bautista. A member of the National Police who arrested Deyanov gave a very different report that echoed the murderers rantings at the time of the murder. The officer was 100 metres away and saw the accused acting aggressively to the guard and saying. “I am God’s prophet and I hit this man (Fermin) because he kept saying no to the word of God.” The defence lawyer wants Deyanov aquitted of the charge but the prosecution are asking for a further three years to be added to his current sentence and for compensation of 4,000 euros to be paid to Fermin.

CelebraTing sPanish sTyle!

elebratiOns are wonderful things. For us british, within the past 6 or so weeks, we’ve had Christmas, new Year and burns night for the scottish among us, and just around the Corner are Valentines and shrove tuesday. Of course, spain and the Canarias celebrate the big ones with us but they often do it slightly differently and they also, like us, have their own celebrations.

Here’s, a rundown of some shared celebrations and next week I’ll take a look at some of the traditionally Spanish celebrations that you may or may not have heard of. new Years eve is known as Año Nuevo or “Nochevieja” Like most festivals in Spain, New Year’s Eve, is usually a family affair which takes place at home. Until midnight people tend to stay at home and on the stroke of midnight it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one on each stroke of the clock to bring good luck for the New Year. This tradition began when, after a particularly big grape harvest the king of Spain decided to give everybody grapes to eat on New Year’s Eve. It is traditional to listen to the clock from Puerta del Sol in Madrid, usually via the television. Even young people won’t go out with their friends until they have seen the New Year in with their families. Throughout the country there are street parties and special nights in hotels and clubs everywhere. Valentine’s Day or Día de san Valentín is much like in many other parts of the world. Nice restaurants are booked up weeks in advance as amorous couples whisper sweet nothings to each other. Cards and flowers, like everywhere else, are also exchanged. But the Spanish actually have two days when lovers can exchange gifts, at least in Barcelona. la Dia de sant Jordi (st george’s Day) is Catalonia’s national day (you thought that was England’s saint’s day? The two regions share him!), celebrated on April 23 each year. Gallant gentlemen in Spain honor St George’s romantic gesture of saving a princess from the clutches of an evil dragon by, erm, buying his loved one a book. In reality, this tradition probably derives from the fact that

William Shakespeare died on this day in 1616 (and Spain’s greatest author, Cervantes, a day earlier). shrove tuesday. This one completely took me by surprise. In Portuguese, Spanish and Italian speaking countries, amongst others, it is known as Carnival (to use the English spelling). Yes, our humble pancake day is Carnaval here! This derives from the words carne levare (to take away meat) and thus to another aspect of the Lenten fast. It is often celebrated with street processions and/or fancy dress. The most famous of these events is the Brazilian Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, and of course the world’s 2nd biggest carnival, Tenerife! easter is a very big deal in Spanish countries. Holy Week in Spain is the annual commemoration of the Passion of Jesus Christ celebrated by Catholic religious brotherhoods and fraternities that perform penance processions on the streets of almost every Spanish city and town during the last week of Lent, the week immediately before Easter. On ash Wednesday, people have a cross made of ash put on their foreheads. This is a way of saying sorry to God. On Palm sunday, most people go to mass in the morning. Children bring palm leaves and branches to be blessed by the priest. Sometimes the branches decorated with sweets, tinsel or have other decorations hanging from them. On Maundy thursday, there is a special ‘Dance of Death’ celebration in Verges, Gerona. A scary dance is performed, at night, by men dressed as skeletons. Many towns and cities in Spain celebrate Easter with processions through the streets at night. Floats called ‘tronos’ are carried through the street. Each float has incredible decorated figures representing part of the Easter story on it. The floats and statues are often covered in gold, silver and fine cloths. They are also decorated with lots of fresh flowers. Forty or fifty people carry each trono on their shoulders on the procession, which can sometimes last between between four or five hours! In Spain, halloween is a three-day celebration, starting from 31st October every year. The first day is referred to as Halloween or Dia de las Brujas (Day of the Witches). This is also called Samhain or Noite dos Calacús (Night of the Pumpkins) in

easter Procession

the north-west region of Galicia. This is followed by the celebration of ‘all saints Day’ (Dia de todos los santos) on the 1st of November. Finally, on 2nd November, the natives observe the customs and rituals of all souls’ Day (Día de los Muertos). The three day celebration is together referred to as “El Dia de los Muertos” and is widely observed by the natives of Spain, Latin America and also by the Latinos residing in different zones of United States and Canada. For Spanish people, Halloween is not only about honoring the dead, but also a celebration of the continuity of life. There is a strong influence of Halloween in the northern part of the country, where the festival is celebrated with much pomp and glory. This impact is due to the migration of Celtic-speaking inhabitants, who arrived thousands of years ago and mixed with the indigenous Iberians residing in these parts. Initially, the festival was celebrated on the ninth month of the Aztec Solar Calendar (the first part of April month) and lasted for a whole month. This date was later shifted, in order to make the celebrations more Christian. The common activities that are seen during Halloween in Spain are lighting bonfires, carving pumpkins, visiting cemeteries, organizing parties and get-togethers and so on. Until very recently Father Christmas was just a big fat man in a red suit that children in other parts of the world fantasised about. Father Christmas (Santa Claus) has never been important in Spain although this is now changing with more and more Spanish families putting Santa decorations around their homes. Christmas eve is called Nochebuena (goodnight) and is the most important family gathering of the year. People will often meet in bars early in the evening for a few drinks with friends then return home to the family and have their main celebratory meal. Fish or seafood starters followed by a roast will be a typical meal. Lamb or pork is the usual fare, not turkey as is the normal custom. A Christmas sweet called turrón often follows. This is nougat made from sweetened toasted almonds. Next week I will take a look at celebrations, that are primarily Spanish!

More than 100.000 specimens have been counted on La Gomera and they are also a source of income for local farmers. Especially the sweet palm ‘honey’ (miel de palma) plays an important part in our economy. Palm honey is not really honey, but the syrup

obtained by first cutting the crown of the palm tree, then collecting the sweet and watery sap (called ‘guarapo’) that rises up the trunk and further boiling the sap down to a syrupy consistency to obtain the ‘honey’. This liquid is delicious, full of minerals etc., and highly valued. A Canarian palm tree may be exploited in this way only once every five years without doing damage. It is very hard work to first climb the trunk and the battle with the very tough and sharp fronds of the crown. Most of the sap rises during the night and thus involves nightshifts for collection. To obtain one litre of palm honey eight litres of the sap are needed. The ‘guarapo’ (sap) tends to ferment very rapidly and so needs to be boiled soon after collection. The island’s government wanted to get the name ‘miel de palma’ (palm

honey) officially recognised and protected, but now the regional government have stated that this can’t be done as the product is not ‘miel’, i.e. honey, as it isn’t produced by bees. The product is just the concentrated sap of the palm and ’honey’ is defined as having b e e n c o l l e c te d a n d stored b y bees. That i s

according to national and EU definitions for the sweet stuff. T h e

Canarian authorities now want to t r y to make ‘palm honey’ an exception to the official definition due to the product’s historic and cultural

background and importance. They also stress its uniqueness and the fact that ‘palm honey’ is already established as a name which most people will not confuse with ‘bee’s honey’. It has a much darker colour than ‘real’ honey and a different, less sweet taste. They remain hopeful that an exception will be made in view of many similar local products all over the EU that were allowed to retain their original names. After all ‘soya milk’ isn’t milk produced by cows which have chewed on soy beans, either. We’ll see, but maybe in the future ‘palm honey’ must be called ‘palm sap syrup’? Unpaid a workers get

publicity from the most

extraordinary football match

ll tOO OFten in tenerife we hear of people who are not paid for their work, but it’s a national phenomenon which has hit harder as the economic crisis has deepened. What was needed, people frequently said, was some sort of major publicity for these people who could not walk out of their jobs without losing their rights, but who were being treated outrageously by employers who could not, or would not, pay them. now, perhaps, there is a bit of publicity at just the level needed. a football match between real sociedad and racing santander has been abandoned, the santander team refusing to play because they haven’t been paid for around six months.

gathered around the centre circle. Sociedad, in solidarity, kept the ball in their own half. Surely there was never a match like this! Within a couple of minutes, the match was suspended, and was then formally abandonded. With heads still spinning pundits are now discussing where this leaves bets placed on the match, and

This wasn’t just any old match either, but a quarter final in the Copa del Rey, a major national football tournament in Spain. To be strictly accurate, the team said they weren’t refusing to play, something that would put them in breach of their contract, but they were not going to kick the ball. As can be seen from the video above which has already been uploaded to youtube, when the whistle blew to start the match, Sociedad kicked off but the Racing Santander players

11

whilst Real Sociedad, the favourites, will automatically go through to the semi final after winning 3-1 in the first leg, the Santander players are demanding the resignation of the club’s board of directors. Maybe this is where the publicity for unpaid workers really starts, when it hits football.

aturDaY night we went to see rock story at the auditorio infanta leonor in los Cristianos. We had seen the original rock story at the exit Palace back in 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed it, so had to give this latest version a shot! tickets went on sale thursday and we got ours while out walking the dogs that night. now come Friday i learnt that every seat in the auditorium had been sold, standing room only. We decided to arrive early as you aren’t allocated seats it is a first come first served

basis. As we drove by looking for a parking space I said it looked as if several coach parties had just been dropped off, however by the time we walked back to the theatre the front terrace was empty. On this occasion the doors had been opened early and when we walked in at just after 8.00pm it was three quarters full. We found good seats albeit at the side. After a short introduction by (and I am only assuming this) Eric Viana the creator, director/producer of the show, the lights went down and we were on a musical journey. Starting in the late 50s, early 60s we covered Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chubby Checker, a white Ray Charles and a couple of iconic

songs from Grease. We then moved on to the groups of the 60s and 70s with the Beatles (albeit one was a girl) the Stones, AC/DC, Status Quo and Pink Floyd building and demolishing ‘The Wall’. By now I am enjoying the show so much and like the rest of the audience singing, clapping, snapping our fingers and even waving our mobile phones (lighters not allowed) that the musical order that follows could be a bit mixed up, needless to say they were all in there somewhere. Bon Jovi, Tina, Elton, The Boss, Jacko and the late great Freddie Mercury. We saw Harley Davidsons drive across the stage; we had acrobats and fights, first class

musicians that must have been exhausted as there was no intermission. Just two and a half hours of non-stop high energy, full in your face entertainment.... and finally in recognition of all the greats who had passed away a tribute to the beautiful ‘Stairway to Heaven’ by Led Zepplin. It was an amazing show, thoroughly enjoyed by every single member of the audience who showed their appreciation by mobbing the front of the stage at the end of the evening. Oh didn´t I say, the audience were mainly of a certain age …..and kids think they know how to have all the fun.

The humble, hairy coconut is the latest edible item to be labelled a Superfood just as antioxidant-rich blueberries omega 3-packed seeds chia and kale, spinach’s denser and more nutritious cousin have been granted the title before it, The Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) grows well by the sea and in the warmer parts of the island but isn’t cultivated for its popular nuts here, they do however produce nuts so keep an eye open for coconut trees, especially near the coastline! Dieters, nutritionists and celebrities have begun to praise the nutritional goodness to be found in the sweet white flesh and juice. Once upon a time the only time we ate it was if we treated ourselves to a Bounty, coconut now we’re buying everything from coconut butter and milk to dried coconut chips and fresh coconut pieces. Waitrose recently reported a 183 per cent increase in combined sales of coconut oil and coconut water, while searches for coconut recipes on its website have

increased by 164 per cent. Nutritionist Zoë Harcombe says that if you were marooned on a desert island, a coconut would be all you need for survival: ‘Coconuts are a perfect example of a natural, real food. They contain all the macronutrients – carbohydrate, fat and protein. As well as being absolutely delicious and full of natural fat, coconuts are a rich source of minerals, including copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and selenium.’ ‘I will not go a day without coconut oil – I put it on my salads or in cups of green tea,’ Model Miranda Kerr Coconut oil which has a saturated-fat content of 87 per cent, is actually said to aid weight loss celebrity trainer James Duigan says: ‘Many models add it to their diet because it helps to metabolise fat, meaning that you burn more calories,’ They also increase the activity of the thyroid, leading to weight loss. A bonus is that while being naturally sweet, coconut oil contains no fructose – a simple sugar quickly absorbed by the body resulting in an instant sugar rush, currently demonised by health experts. Coconut oil is also rich in lauric acid, a saturated fat that enhances the immune system through its antiviral and antibacterial effects, so can be used to ease skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis when applied directly; those who suffer from yeast infections or thrush may benefit from a more coconutrich diet because of its antibacterial qualities. Coconut water is packed with potassium, electrolytes and vitamin C, it is said to be excellent at rehydrating your body after exercise. nutritionist Petronella Ravenshear says of the coconut flesh: ‘it has an excellent ratio of fats to protein, providing long-lasting,

slow-release energy that will get you through to dinner time. Like coconut oil, coconut milk and cream (always opt for unsweetened versions) are high in saturated fat at about 16 per cent but can prove a lifesaver for those who don’t eat dairy, and will make dishes deliciously creamy. ‘We’ve got used to the idea that for food to be good for us it’s got to taste horrible, but coconut does the double duty of tasting good and being nutritious.’ Wellbeing expert Calgary Avansino says: ‘I love coconut in any shape or size,’ says. Don’t be put off by its richness; it’s 100 per cent healthy.’ And why not try the Malibu and Coke diet? I lost 2 days last week!

Juanita Found In Aberdeen a Cat FOunD in a garage in aberdeenshire was found to have been microchipped on the spanish island of Fuerteventura Tina the cat The shorthaired tabby was named ‘Juanita’ after it was discovered that she was “Spanish”. The Shorthaired tabby, was found in Muchalls on Thursday, and was originally registered in Las Palmas in Fuerteventura. The phone number on record was disconnected and it was suspected the owner may have emigrated to the UK and not updated the address details. The tabby had been looked after at Kirkton Vets since being found in a family’s garage and was reunited with her owner by vet Fiona MacPherson on Saturday. Ms

MacPherson said: “We were delighted when Fiona came to collect her and we’re so pleased that we were able to help reunite them. Fiona even heard the story on the radio as she was driving to collect Tina. She told us how pleased she was that Tina was ok as she had feared the worst.” Tina went missing from her home last week and it is thought that she hopped a ride on a vehicle and travelled 30 miles to Muchalls. The owner, Fiona Prati, used to live in Fuerteventura and now stays in Bridge of Don. Zahir White, from Cats Protection, said: “It is great news that

Tina’s owner has been found and we’re happy we were able to play a part in reuniting them. Every week we help to reunite 50 lost cats with their owners across the UK and this is one of the most unusual cases we have come across. It is always heartbreaking when a much-loved cat goes missing and the owner never knows what became of them. Cases like this show how important it is to get cats microchipped and keep the microchip details up-to-date.”

Push Spain to top of list for ‘Abroad fraud’

Pain has topped the list of countries for benefit fraud abroad committed against uK taxpayers, new figures reveal. More than 750 cases were investigated in spain last year by the Department for Work and Pensions. Abroad fraud cost taxpayers an estimated £84m in 2012/13 - up 90% in the last two years. It is now the third largest type of benefit cheating and includes fraudulent claims for Pension Credit (£52m), Housing Benefit (£19m) and Income Support (£12m). Minister for Welfare Reform, Lord Freud, said: “Benefits are there to help those who need it and the vast majority play by the rules and would not once dream of cheating. But there is a minority who really try to take the biscuit. “We have safeguards in place to bring these types of cases to our attention and we will make sure benefits are stopped when there

is evidence of a fraud being committed.” If you suspect a benefit cheat in Spain, then you can call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) hotline on 900 554 440. It’s free and confidential, and you could help to put a stop to taxpayers’ money going to the wrong people. New data shows where DWP investigators looked into 7,296 cases of suspected abroad fraud during 2013. The top 5 nations involved were: . Spain - 769 cases . Pakistan - 628 cases . Turkey - 298 cases . India - 282 cases

. USA - 246 cases Figures also reveal that DWP has

in-

vestigated benefit entitlement for claimants living in countries as far apart as the Holy See, Somalia, China, and Iraq. Abroad fraud includes claims by people leaving Great Britain after their claim starts, those failing to notify DWP before leaving the country or staying abroad for too long, and families who fail to report the death of someone living abroad permanently and receiving benefits. The Government is increasing the use of data sharing with foreign countries including Spain in order to combat fraud. Details of claimants who have died whilst in Spain and elsewhere abroad are

sent to the UK, helping the DWP to stop families or friends who are fraudulently continuing to claim pensions or benefits. Richard West, Head of DWP’s counter-fraud teams said: “Cases range from people hiding foreign assets and homes to those moving abroad, either temporarily or permanently, at the taxpayers’ expense. “Benefit cheats need to know that even if they are out of the country, our teams will still investigate and where necessary bring them back to the UK to face justice.” Cases referred to DWP are investigated and where an administrative penalty or criminal prosecution is appropriate, action is taken. In all cases DWP will seek to recover all the money overpaid. Abroad Fraud has risen to £84m in 2012/13 from £55m in 2011/12 and £44m in 2010/11.

almond blossom, see it, Walk it, Taste it

by Colin Kirby

t

here’s neVer a bad time to enjoy santiago del teide but in February the west coast municipality explodes into a pink and white cascade as the almond trees show off their blossom. it was a crisp early saturday as i set off from the church plaza in one of the large guided groups organized by santiago del teide ayuntamiento.

I choose the long 9 km walk but you don’t need to go far to reap the rewards, just behind the town hall the fields spread out in a blaze of colour. There are several routes to follow, the large boards in the plaza give details of the choices and the Tourist Information office can offer plenty of advice. A cold start soon mellowed as the sun burst through, the fallen petals on the path made a welcoming carpet and the trees had a nice mix of full blooms and buds promising further displays throughout February. Rising above the reservoir the pink and white blossom spread ahead of us, just after an hour we came to the clearing where the Chinyero eruption of 1909 came to an abrupt end. The statue of the Virgin was placed in the path of the hot lava and it halted, a cross now marks the cut off point and each year the miracle is commemorated. From this point onwards the almond trees were part of a larger canvas, the pine trees rising in the distance and the partly snowy peak of Mount Teide were beautiful companions as we worked our way along the lava path. Our destination was the village of Arguayo, the route passed through the shade of the pines with our start point visible away

to one side in the distance. The tight path down into Arguayo took us through terraced hills brimming with their own blossom, Tenerife produces the second biggest haul of commercial almonds in the world. During the five hour walk, with lots of stops, the temperature varied dramatically with passing clouds producing a plunge in degrees, that’s why it is important to take extra layers as well as sturdy footwear, food, and a mobile. The routes will be popular for the rest of the month but without guides so be prepared. For a fuller appreciation Santiago del Teide council have arranged for local bars and restaurants to offer special menus featuring the versatile almond until the 28 February. Try a breakfast snack of a coffee, hot chocolate or barraquito (coffee and liquer) with an almond cake or pasty for just 2 euros. How about dinner, Canarian style codfish with almonds and Canarian potatoes, an almond flan with pumpkin cream, cheese, and goats meat, or maybe steak with almond sauce. Full details are posted outside the Tourist Office or you can pick up a leaflet inside. It’s just a humble almond but you will be surprised how much beauty, history, and taste it can produce.

ast saturday tens of thousands of people marched to spain’s parliament to protest the conservative government’s new law to restrict abortion, allowing the practice only in cases of rape or serious risk to health.

Protesters carried banners saying, “Because I decide,” ‘’Allow mothers to decide,” and “Mothers and fathers in freedom.” The previous Socialist government made abortion before the 14th week widely legal. But the ruling Popular Party has long sided with the Roman Catholic Church on moral and social issues and made changing the law

one of its main promises in the 2011 vote that brought it to power. The law needs parliamentary approval where the Popular Party has a large majority The rally was organized by dozens of women’s groups and entities that fight for reproductive rights. Protester Pilar Rubio said:

“I am fighting for the rights of our children because I am 60 years old already and this no longer affects me directly,” Cristina Bermejo, 31, said :- “In the rest of Europe, where previously many viewed us as an example of freedom and civil rights, now, they are questioning us, asking what on earth we are doing,”

They were lifted from an Emirates-flagged supply ship, the Esnaad 715 which was “in danger of sinking” 50 nautical miles from the Spanish port of La Coruna. They then sent a tugboat to assess the situation of the Esnaad, which had been on the way from the Netherlands to Abu Dhabi. The national coastguard said in a statement: “The rescue operation was complicated by the adverse weather conditions in the area, with southeasterly winds of 45 knots,” equivalent to more than 80 kilometres an hour, it added. Fierce waves were pounding seafronts and fishing boats off northern Spain, where authorities issued alerts for storm tides and strong winds for Wednesday, with snow forecast in some places. On Sunday, a boy was swept out to sea as storm surges hit Galicia and other northwestern regions with waves reaching higher than 10 metres high. He has not yet been found.

MAINLAND NEWS IN BRIEF spain’s scandal-hit royal family are squeezing their budgets and providing greater transparency about their spending. Theking has had his salary frozen for a third year and the royal palace’s budget was cut by two per cent to 7.78 million euros ($A12.09 million) under the state spending plan approved in 2013.The palace has also published online a breakdown of how that money is spent, part of its efforts to appear more transparent as it suffers from a fraud scandal embroiling the king’s youngest daughter. Under the 2014 budget the king gets 292,752 euros, covering a fixed salary plus expenses for official functions. Juan Carlos’s son and heir Felipe, 46, gets a salary worth half that of his father’s - 146,376 euros. The budget for the first time fixes the income for Juan Carlos’s wife Queen Sofia and Felipe’s wife, Princess Letizia, at 45 per cent and 35 per cent of the king’s revenue respectively. spain looks set to rise to number one on the list of top destinations to invest in for British people looking to purchase property, a new report has stated. While Spain has consistently sat in the top three along with France and Italy in recent years, it has most commonly sat in second place behind Britons’ neighbour across the Channel. However, this is all set to change in the year ahead, with the number of searches for properties in Spain far exceeding the other two, and demand for second homes looking like it is about to see a surge therein. Of those looking to put their money into this market, just over half said they were doing so to get themselves a holiday home. This demographic will need to look out for new rules set to come in across the next year in Spain though, which could see them unable to let out their homes unless they are licensed. On top of this sort of investment, another third said they were looking to emigrate to the sunnier climes of Spain, while 13 per cent are looking specifically for an investment and the potential capital gains associated with this. spain cannot block a non-binding vote on Catalan independence that could become the basis for negotiations on Catalonia’s future, the president of the north-eastern region said in an interview. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged to go to the Constitutional Tribunal to block any Catalan attempts to hold a referendum, arguing sovereignty is a matter for all of Spain to decide.Over the past three years the independence movement in Catalonia has gained force, with roughly half of Catalans saying they want independence from Spain and a much bigger majority saying they should have the right to decide. The independence movement has become a major headache for Rajoy, who is struggling to pull Spain out of six years of economic stagnation and unemployment of 26 percent. French state-controlled nuclear group Areva and Spanish wind turbine maker Gamesa are in advanced talks over a joint venture in offshore wind turbines, sources said. Both firms would hold a 50% stake in the new entity, which would focus on expanding the promising but capital-intensive offshore windfarms business.Nuclear energy group Areva, which builds nuclear reactors and mines uranium, is struggling to diversify into offshore wind energy. It does not make onshore turbines. The world’s No. 4 wind turbine maker, Gamesa has already installed almost 27,000 MW of onshore turbine capacity worldwide and is now developing an offshore turbine with a capacity of 5 MW. The firm is also considering a more powerful 7-8 MW model. Most onshore turbines – whose size is limited by the difficulty of road transport for the 50 meter long blades – have capacities around 2.5-3 MW, enough to power more than 1,500 average EU households. spanish prosecutors have opened an investigation into newly chosen Spanish Cardinal Fernando Sebastian Aguilar after a gay-rights group accused him of hate speech for calling homosexuality a “defect”. He compared homosexuality to his own high blood pressure -- “a defect I have that I have to correct as far as I can” -- and said “Pointing out a defect to a homosexual is not an offence, it is a help because many cases of homosexuality can be recovered and normalised with adequate treatment.” The public prosecutor for the southern province of Malaga, Juan Carlos Lopez, said he had opened a preliminary inquiry “to clarify whether the allegations constitute a criminal offence.”

Hooligans and hell-raisers, protesting against the PP in Valladolid last Sunday. The anti-riot police must have “Gotcha, Madam! Hope you have private health care!” had a terrifying experience.

V

allaDOliD; Whilst over 2,000 members of the Partido Popular were celebrating their annual conference in Valladolid on sunday, over 5,000 members of the public took to the city’s

streets to protest against government corruption.

During the PP conference, Secretary general María Dolores de Cospedal claimed that “Everyone was PP”, and that “without the PP, Spain would be nothing”, President Rajoy focused upon insulting the PSOE, in retaliation for Rubalcaba’s continued insist-

ence that Rajoy answer sensitive questions regarding his alleged role in the Bárcenas case. Meanwhile, a 60 year old mother who was taking part in the non-violent protests was hospitalized and in a serious condition after being struck to her head by police with a baton. Five more protestors were injured, and three were detained.

MallOrCa: Human rights activist Javier Couso has suggested that he will probably present himself as a candidate for this year’s European elections. Javier is the brother of the late José Couso, a Telecinco cameraman who was assassinated in a white flag hotel by US troops in Bagdad in 2003. The Spanish public was later shocked when a cable from wiki-leaks revealed that both the PP and PSOE administrations had agreed to not pursue the issue. In next week’s issue, we’ll publish an “Javier-Couso”; Human Rights activist Javier Couso, exclusive TW interview with soon to present himself in the European Elections. Javier.

Canary Islands: many town halls are experiencing internal turmoil as they are preparing to conform to new transparency laws. Town halls will soon be obliged by national law to publish all of their annual costs, payments, salaries, expenses and balances. I’ve been tipped off that several mayors and councilors are already transferring financial shares and property to family members. This year should be interesting!

Suicide Rate At Record High

F

igures from spain’s national institute of statistics showed the number of suicides in spain increased by 11.3 percent in 2012 from the previous year, reaching its highest level in the past years.

Official figures show 3,539 suicide (2,724 men and 815 women) cases in

Spain during 2012, a rate of 7.6 per 100,000 inhabitants. The figures were the highest since 2005. Studies suggest that economic reasons are a major influence. Among men and women between the ages of 25 to 34, suicide was the second cause of death after cancer and the leading cause of death of men in the same age group.

Spain’s unemployment rate has remained beyond 25 percent for the sixth quarter in a row, making the country home to a third of the unemployed population in the eurozone. The younger generation of the country has been hit hardest with youth unemployment stand-

ing at nearly 58 percent. The figure is the second highest in the eurozone after Greece. A fifth of Spain’s population lives under the threshold for poverty as defined by the European Union’s statistics agency, Eurostat.

he First of four european based u.s. warships to protect against a ballistic missile attack left Virginia last Friday for its new home port in spain, which hasn’t permanently hosted a u.s. ship since 1979. USS Donald Cook, a guidedmissile destroyer will be home ported in Rota, Spain, about 60 miles northwest of Gibraltar. Rota, Spain, has served as

a principal overseas base for the U.S. Navy since the early 1950s. It is already home to a U.S. Navy hospital and U.S. ships regularly stop there while overseas. The Cook, and the three other destroyers that will join it by the end of next year, are each equipped with the sophisticated Aegis radar system, which enables it to track and shoot down ballistic missiles. Keeping four of the ships overseas will allow the Navy to keep a continuous presence in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic

Ocean. It typically takes 10 to 14 days for a ship leaving the East Coast to travel to Europe. Cmdr. Scott Jones, the Cook’s commanding officer said: “We will be bringing forward a protective umbrella to our forward deployed forces as well as to our allies and friends in Europe. The ship certainly does bring an awesome capability.” The relocation is part of the Obama administration’s four-phase plan developed in 2009 to put land- and

sea-based radars and interceptors in several European locations over the next decade. The plan was to protect against a potential Iranian nuclear threat and approved by NATO the following year. Since 2011, the U.S. has been rotating ships equipped with the radar system in and out of Europe from bases in Virginia and Florida. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said in a written statement: “Permanently forward deploying four ships in Rota will enable us to be in the right place, not just at the right

time, but all the time.” Several sailors aboard the Cook specifically chose to stay assigned to the Cook longer than they originally planned to so that they could live overseas. About a dozen families of crew members have already moved to Spain, but that most of them are waiting until the school year is over to relocate. Petty Officer 1st Class Aaron Tadlock, a fire control man said: “It’s always the worst part when you know you’re coming home and then you’re

like, ‘Alright, we’re on our way home, but now we have our two week trip across the Atlantic. So this is going to be really exciting to know that we’ve finished, but it’s going to take us a day to get home now. So that’s one really huge benefit about cutting out the trip over the Atlantic.” The next destroyer to move to Spain will be the USS Ross, which will leave Norfolk this summer. The Norfolk-based USS Porter and the Mayport, Fla.-based USS Carney will move to Spain in 2015.

storms batter north Coast t

he nOrth coast of spain was battered by storms which left a trail of damage last weekend. Strong wind and high waves of over 10 metres in height, caused wide-scale damage from Galicia across to the Basque region, but fortunately no fatalities were reported. Seven meter waves caused damage along the La Concha beach and residents in neighbourhoods close to the seafront were advised to move their cars out of low level garages because of the risk of flooding. The city of San Sebastian In the Basque region was badly affected as the city’s famous old town suffered flooding with water over a metre and a half in depth and bridges over the Urumea River, which passes through

the city, have been closed as a result of the high water. Waves caused flooding in other towns such as Deba, Pasaia, Zarautz and Irun and families needed to be moved in Erandio and the coastal towns of Bermeo, Bakio and Muskiz because of the risk of the rising waters. The area around the Sardinero beach was hit by waves which flooded garages, shops and the bars in the region. Firemen have been working since early Sunday morning to pump out flooded basements and businesses, while they were employed in clearing the streets in nearby San Vicente de la Barquera. The weather came in from the Atlantic, many local governments decided to limit access to many beaches as the region was placed under red alert for the weather.

Police seize Cocaine in Floating rucksacks

s

Panish police last Monday seized 900 kilograms of cocaine in rucksacks found floating in the sea and fitted with tracking devices and officers arrested five spaniards in raids on a gang suspected of trafficking the drugs and money-laundering in the cities of Valencia and Malaga. they also seized 72,000 euros ($97,000) in cash as well as jewellery, luxury watches, vehi-

cles and a boat. Police did not say how much the drugs were worth.

A police statement said: “The cocaine was hidden inside 37 rucksacks that had been anchored with a sophisticated flotation and tracking system so that they could later be picked up from the sea,” Authorities believe the drugs were destined for the Costa del Sol, a southern region of beaches around Malaga that is popular with foreign tourists. Spain is one of the main points of entry for cocaine

into Europe from its former colonies in Latin America. The hiding of the drugs in waters off a beach in the eastern city of Valencia was the latest in a series of increasingly creative ruses by traffickers, drugs have been hidden under smugglers’ wigs and inside their bodies in breast implants, as well as in cargos such as bananas, roses and cakes. In 2012 overall, Spanish authorities said they seized 20 tonnes of cocaine, which equaled more than 40 percent of the total seized in Europe that year.

International Flamenco Fashion Show

M

ODels in ruffled dresses and floral hairdos hit the ramp at the international Flamenco Fashion show in seville last week. the typically body hugging outfits with flared and layered skirts are an inspiration to designers around the world

The show took place in the Andalusian capital of Seville last Friday, as models stepped on the catwalks wearing the bright colours and ruffles at the hem and sleeves that are the signature of flamenco fashion. Flamenco designers like Mari Carmen Cruz and Sara de Benitez were there to show off their stunning creations. Flamenco fashion is of course inspired

by Flamenco, a form of Spanish folk music and dance from the region of Andalusia in southern Spain. It includes cante (singing), toque (guitar playing), baile (dance) and palmas (handclaps). First mentioned in literature in 1774, the genre grew out of Andalusian and Romani music and dance styles. Flamenco is often associated with the Romani people of Spain (Gitanos) and a

number of famous flamenco artists are of this ethnicity. In recent years Flamenco has become popular all over the world and is taught in many countries: in Japan there are more academies than there are in Spain. On November 16, 2010 UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

More than 500million people have installed the game, in which players must arrange sweets into matching sets, since it launched two years ago. Marcos Sanchez from App Annie, which carried out the research said: ‘The thing with Candy Crush is that it’s difficult enough to be a challenge but not so tricky that you’re going to stop playing in frustration. There’s also the social aspect where you can help your friends get extra lives and show off what level you’re on. It’s a great combination.’ App developer King earns an estimated £400,000 a day in revenue from in-game purchases. More than £6billion was spent just in Apple’s App Store in 2013, according to the company. Facebook had another year of dominance, topping the

most downloaded list of 2013. It was followed by instant messaging service WhatsApp and video call software Skype. For the first time ever, money made from app purchases surpassed the amount spent on handheld games consoles, such as the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Analysts said the rise of smartphone gaming was part of the reason for the drop in console profits. Mr Sanchez added: ‘Smartphones have become so ubiquitous because they provide so many functions. The computer power behind them is getting better and better, we’re seeing some incredibly sophisticated apps. People are using them instead of other devices like laptops.’ But as popular as it is, it has a way to go to beat the biggest earner worldwide Puzzle & Dragons, which is hugely popular in Asia, still with the amount of people playing the technicoloured game, it’s not hard to imagine that when the zombie apocalypse finally dawns on mankind, it won’t be brain munching undead, it will be mindless morons so addicted to their App game they shuffle through life eternally staring at their touch screens, you’ve been warned, now, time to get past level 490.

sCar Winning actor Philip seymour hoffman was found dead last sunday. he died of an apparent drug overdose and was discovered after a friend called emergency services, on the bathroom floor of his Manhattan apartment with a syringe in his left arm. Two law enforcement sources say Police investigating the death of the actor found close to 50

envelopes of what they believe is heroin, a number of used syringes and prescription drugs. Police also found several empty bags branded “Ace of Hearts” -- a street name for heroin. He was last seen alive at 8 p.m. Saturday, he was expected to get his children Sunday but didn’t show up. Playwright David Katz and another person went to the apartment and found him dead. Hoffman made his name in the 1990s in films including Boogie Nights and the Big Lebowski,

before winning the best actor Oscar for his 2005 portrayal of writer Truman Capote. The actor suffered a long battle with drug addiction, which was known to the public, and even checked himself into rehab in May last year. Hoffman’s family called his death: “Tragic and sudden. We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone.” Tom Hanks said: “This is a horrible day for those who worked with Philip. He was a giant talent. Our hearts are open for his family.” Actor Jim Carrey tweeted: “Dear Philip, a beautiful beautiful soul. For the most sensitive among us the noise can be too much. Bless your heart.” But actor Jared Padalecki was criticised after he told his 1.2 million Twitter followers that he thought Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death was ‘Stupid’. In the initial tweet, which the 31-year-old American actor has since deleted, Jared wrote: ‘”Sad” isn’t the word I’d use to describe a 46 year old man throwing his life away to drugs. “Senseless” is move like it. “Stupid.”

But the sensation was sadly short-lived, the 36-year-old has had to give his new hand back as he took part in trials that cannot be extended because of safety regulations and it could be years before the technology is used in mainstream care. Mr Sorensen spent a month using the hand, which was hooked up with electrodes and held in place by a false forearm, now he is back using his old prosthetic, which detects muscle movement in his stump. Ghost Town

n

earlY three years after the tsunami which caused a nuclear meltdown at Fukushima the fallout continues, 22,000 former residents of namie, from the 12-mile exclusion zone are allowed home only once a month... and cannot stay overnight The cleanup began after the power plant was said to be in a state of ‘cold shutdown’, in December last year. The damaged reactor four which contains 400 tonnes of uranium rods that need to be removed, only then will the evacuees be allowed to return home for good. In total 80,000 people were evacuated. In March 2011 a powerful earthquake rocked Japan, causing a devastating tsunami. As well as taking the lives of more than 19,000, the Fukushima nuclear power plant was overcome by

floodwater before going into meltdown. Now, nearly three years on from the natural disaster, there is still a 12-mile exclusion zone in place around Fukushima which contains hundreds of bags of radioactive soil which cannot be removed due to opposition from those outside. The clean-up involves moving 400-tonnes of uranium and is expected to take a year. Only after this is completed can areas be repopulated and some may need to wait five years to find out if they can go back, others may have to wait a decade, and a few may never be allowed to return. Across the other side of the Pacific Ocean, the US state of California is also concerned about the effect of the disaster as water contaminated with radiation is expected to start washing up soon. The exact amount is unknown, and there is no way to accurately measure how much has leaked away.

i

n the shaanXi province, China, reports of giant hornets attacks have surged recently Currently, there have been 41 confirmed deaths and over 1,600 more people injured as a result of these insects stinging their victims.

The Asian Giant Hornet is the largest species of Hornet in the world and known for their aggression. Not only is the Asian Giant Hornet equipped with a stinger that is about 1/4 of an inch long, but it their sting is venomous. Their venom is composed of eight different chemicals which cause complications with breathing, skin degeneration, anaphylactic shock, and even renal failure, and pheromones injected by their stinger informs the rest of the hornets to sting you until you are able to get away. Estimations put their top speed at 25 mph and they have been known to travel 60 miles when chasing their dinner. Victims can be stung multiple times due to the fact that their stingers do not have a barb, they remain attached. The buzzing sound of the Asian Giant Hornet is said to be “earth-shatteringly” louder than your average honeybee. With recent climate change, the warmer winter months have allowed these insects to

dramatically increase their number. It is believed that these giants are invading areas populated with humans because of rising temperatures as well as deforestation. They are migrating from their native habitat into cities which means that the chances are greater that the numbers of attacks will increase. Humans are the only predator for the Asian Giant Hornet, which are the apex predator in their native habitat. In Asia, people who share the same habitat as the hornets will actually catch and deep fry them. The months of September and October are their mating season which means they are more likely to show aggression during this time.

Beyonce recently wrote an essay on gender equality and Kevin Allred, a doctoral student who is teaching the class, told the university’s online news site that he is using the star’s career as a way to explore American race, gender and sexual politics. Earlier this month Beyonce, who is married to rapper Jay-Z, wrote an open essay for the Shriver Report website on the issue of gender equality, in it she said:

“We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. We have a lot of work to do, but we can get there if we work together.” Beyonce, 32, and Jay-Z were named the most powerful people in the music industry by Billboard earlier this week. Mr Allred said he hopes to help students think more critically about media consumption.

aFFaele sollecito, the italian found guilty alongside amanda Knox of the murder of british student Meredith Kercher, has been stopped by police on the slovenian border with italy. he was found by officers with his current girlfriend at a hotel in the village of Venzone, about 24 miles from the slovenian and austrian borders, after being banned from leaving the country.

Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito had their guilty verdicts for the murder of

British student Meredith Kercher reinstated by judges in Florence in last week. Neither American Knox, 26, nor Sollecito, 29, an Italian national, were in the courtroom to hear the verdict, though members of Miss Kercher’s family were at the hearing. This is the third time the pair have been tried for the killing of Miss Kercher, who died in Perugia in 2007. Miss Kercher, a 21-year-old Leeds University student from Coulsdon, Surrey, was found with her throat slashed in the bedroom of the house she shared with Knox in Perugia, central Italy, in November 2007. Prosecutors claimed that Miss Kercher was the victim of a drug-fuelled sex game gone awry. Knox and her former boyfriend Sollecito

have consistently protested their innocence and claim they were not even in the apartment on the night Miss Kercher died Originally convicted in 2009 and sentenced to more than 25 years in jail, a retrial cleared Knox and Sollecito in 2011, however an appeal for a retrial was granted early last year, leading to the reinstatement of the guilty verdicts. Drug dealer Rudy Guede is already serving a 16-year sentence over Miss Kercher’s death, though it has not been decided whether Knox will be extradited from the US to Italy to serve her sentence. Knox told BBC’s Newsnight: “I’m not willingly going back, no. It would feel like a train wreck. There’s not

BIKER GRAVE

b

ill stanDleY, a harley-Davidson bike fanatic is off to ‘ride through the pearly gates’ after being buried atop his favourite hog.

The motorbike-mad 82-year-old has been buried at the cemetery in Mutual, Ohio, in a customised see-through coffin astride his prized 1967 Harley-Davidson at his funeral service. Bill, “a colourful personality”, he left his US home at 13 to work as a cattle ranch hand and rodeo rider in the west of the country. He led a nomadic existence, travelling across America for many years atop his beloved 1967 Electra Glide until eventually

settling down in aptly named Mechanicsburg, Ohio. Determined to take the bike with him when he finally went to that biker bar in the sky, began his mission six years ago by buying three burial plots next to his wife Lorna. With the help of sons Pete and Roy he created the 9ftby-11ft pexiglass box. His daughter, Dorothy Brown, said the idea for the unique funeral came about 18 years ago when they were discussing what he would do with this bike when he died: ‘He said “what am I supposed to do? I’ve got two sons, but only one bike”. My sister just offhandedly said “oh dad, just be buried with it”. I think it was about two weeks after that it really

hit him – what a great idea. We all still thought he was kidding. Eighteen years later, guess what?’ Standley’s family said he’d been talking about it for years and liked to take people to the garage to show off the unusual casket his two sons had built for him. He told people he didn’t just want to ride off to heaven, he wanted the world to see him do it in the big see-through box. His daughter lovingly called him a ‘twist of colour on the tweed surface of life’ and a ‘wanderlust’. Mr Standley was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year and succumbed to lung cancer. You were Born to be Wild Bill. Ride in peace.

a lot I can do after this appeal. They would order my arrest and the Italian government would approach the American government and say, ‘Extradite her’. And I don’t know what would happen. I’m still counting on an acquittal. I’ll technically be considered a fugitive. I don’t know what I will do though. I’m definitely not going back willingfully. They’ll have to catch me and pull me back, kicking and screaming into a prison I don’t deserve to be in.” Knox, who now lives in Seattle, said she could not attend the retrial due to being unable to afford to travel to Italy and remained in the US for the duration of the retrial. Knox was given a sentence of 28 years and six months, and Sollecito - who has had his

passport withheld - received a 25-year term. Knox’s lawyer, Luciano Ghirga, said the telephone line “went dead” as he told his client of the verdict: “For those that, like me, are convinced that Amanda is innocent, it is a very difficult time. We have to respect the verdict but we will challenge them. We’re very sad at the moment. We will definitely try everything. This is not the final word. I am very upset by this decision. We continue to be brave, we have plenty of courage. The road to the next appeal is quite difficult but we are ready for a new battle.” Knox has issued a statement saying: “I am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict, having been found innocent before. I expected

better from the Italian justice system. The evidence and accusatory theory do not justify a verdict of guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Rather nothing has changed. There has always been a marked lack of evidence. My family and I have suffered greatly from the wrongful persecution, this has gotten out of hand. Most troubling is that it was entirely preventable, the investigation is prejudiced and narrow-minded, there is an unwillingness to admit mistakes and there was a reliance on unreliable testimony and evidence”. She added: “Clearly a wrongful conviction is horrific for the wrongfully accused, and it is also terribly bad for the victim, their surviving family and society.”

beatlemania hits us!

O

n FebruarY 7, 1964, 50 years ago today, the Pan am Yankee Clipper flight 101 from london heathrow landed at new York’s Kennedy airport--and “beatlemania” took hold of a america! It was the first visit to the United States by the Beatles, Paul McCartney, age 21, Ringo Starr, 23, John Lennon, 23, and George Harrison, 20,a British rock-and-roll quartet from Liverpool, that had just scored its first No. 1 U.S. hit six days before with “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” At Kennedy, the “Fab Four”-dressed in mod suits and sporting their trademark pudding bowl haircuts--were greeted by 3,000 screaming fans who caused a near riot when the boys stepped off their plane and onto American soil. Two days later, they made their first ap-

pearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, a popular television variety show. Although it was difficult to hear the performance over the screams of teenage girls in the studio audience, an estimated 73 million U.S. television viewers, or about 40 percent of the U.S. population, tuned in to watch. Sullivan immediately booked the Beatles for two more appearances that month. The group made their first public concert appearance in the United States on February 11 at the Coliseum in Washington, D.C., and 20,000 fans attended. The next day, they gave two backto-back performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall, and police were forced to close off the streets around the music hall because of fan hysteria. On February 22, the Beatles returned to England, and American music would never be the same again.

Their singles and albums sold millions of records, and at one point in April 1964 all five best-selling U.S. singles were Beatles songs. By the time the worlds first real boyband’s first feature-film, A Hard Day’s Night, was released in August, Beatlemania was an epidemic the world over. Not only was their music the ultimate in catchy pop, The Beatles, with their exuberant style and good-natured rebellion, were the perfect catalyst for the youth of the time to break away from the culturally rigid landscape of the 1950s Later, the Beatles gave up touring to concentrate on their innovative studio recordings, such as 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band, a psychedelic concept album that is regarded as a masterpiece of popular music. . In 1970, the Beatles disband-

ed, leaving a legacy of 18 albums and 30 Top 10 U.S. singles. Critics of all ages acknowledge the songwriting genius of the Lennon-McCartney team and their music continues to be relevant and to inspire singer songwriters to this very day During the next decade, all four Beatles pursued solo careers, with varying success. Lennon, the most outspoken and controversial Beatle, was shot to death by a deranged fan outside his New York apartment building in 1980. McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 for his contribution to British culture. In November 2001, George Harrison succumbed to cancer. Only last week the 2 surviving Beatles, Paul and Ringo reunited to play together at the 2014 Grammy awards, and still the crowd screamed for more.

Spotlight on…..Loro Parque

W

elcome to the first of Tenerife Weekly’s features on some of the biggest and best things to do, see, eat, drink, and anything else we can think of including on this beautiful island!

We must stress that these will not be paid advertisements or scathing reviews (It’s only our opinion, if we don’t rate it, it won’t be in here), this is simply a helpful guide, to hopefully make your time on Tenerife-be it long or short-a more enjoyable experience. Many people I’ve spoken to, say a trip to Tenerife isn’t complete without a visit to Loro Parque, and I’d have to agree with them! Loro Parque of course is Spanish for Parrot Park, but trust me, its sooo much more than a few brightly coloured birds riding miniature bicycles although the actual parrot show is fantastic With 33 acres of landscaped tropical gardens enveloping a spectacular zoo, Loro Parque is an impressive sight to behold and easily one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island, having opened its doors to well over 40 million visitors, since it opened it’s doors for the first time in 1972, when it was a modest little parrot sanctuary. Today the parrot collection is the

largest in the world and makes the park one of the main references in the study and conservation of these birds worldwide. Other records the park has set include Europe’s largest dolphin show pool, the world’s largest indoor penguin exhibition, the longest shark tunnel in Europe, and the park is only the second place in Europe to house orcas. In February 2006, Loro Parque received four young orcas, on loan from SeaWorld, which still maintains ownership of these animals, and has sent its own professionals, including trainers, curators & veterinarians, to supplement the staff at Loro Parque. On October 13, 2010, Kohana, an eight year old female orca, gave birth to a male calf in the park’s “Orca Ocean.” When Kohana rejected her calf, trainers stepped in to hand rear him. Kohana’s calf was named Adan, meaning first man in Spanish. To list every species in the park would take more space than I have here but chimpanzees, gorillas, marmosets, sea lions, otters, jaguars, tigers, iguanas, alligators, giant tortoises, flamingos, pelicans, exotic fish, piranhas, sea horses, and various sharks all call the park home, and for visitors interested in plants, there is a large orchid garden with very rare plants.

Loro Parque also has 4 shows, parrots, sea-lions, dolphins and orcas, which perform several times a day and once you’ve looked at all the animals and seen all the shows, there’s still the children’s playground “Kinderlandia,” a Gambian Market, a parrot baby station, a huge parrot museum and many, many restaurants. Loro Parque is in Puerto de la Cruz, there are buses available from most parts of the south. For more information go to www.loroparque.com

Her case was reassessed recently when, due to the severe winter weather forced a Michigan corrections officer to stay indoors, leading him to look at a pile of “cold cases”. Lieutenant Charles Levens sent fingerprint requests to the FBI on all of the old file and Hayman’s matched those of a woman arrested in San Diego. San Diego police went to an apartment, where a woman matching Hayman’s description answered the door. She identified herself as Jamie Lewis and produced government documents, Officers, however, remained suspicious. Lt Mayer said: “Her eyes gave her away, the eyes in the picture matched the eyes of this woman.”

A spokesman for the Michigan Corrections Department, said: “We can’t just write it off. We don’t have the ability to say, ‘It’s been a long time. You’re free to go.’” The Michigan fugitive’s 32-year-old son was stunned when officers arrived at her San Diego apartment, Lt Mayer said: “This seemed very much a surprise to him,” The officers took Hayman to a police station, where she eventually acknowledged her identity. She will be returned to Michigan to complete her sentence, and could face additional time for escaping.

iPhone owners are Clueless!

r

ecently a study showed most iPhone owners don’t really know how to use their device. Within its four and a half year existence, almost 150 million iPhones have been purchased; the iPhone is one of the most popular and best-known gadgets in the world. It’s pretty odd then that no one seems to know how to use it. The survey revealed that 68% of people had no idea you can use the volume up button as a camera shutter, for instance. Here are just some of the ‘hidden’ features in iOS 7. If you want to delete text you’ve already written, shake your phone. It will delete the text.

You can use the volume up button as a camera shutter. Your iPhone has a spirit level hidden in the Compass app. If Siri doesn’t pronounce your name or other words properly, you can teach her to do better. You can ask Siri to search

for different topics on Twitter. You can block calls from certain, or all unknown numbers. Your iPhone will send you a ‘happy birthday’ message if you tell Siri your birthday. Right I’m off to play with my phone!

anger

P

OP star and noted strange person Prince has dropped a copyright charge against 20 fans. The 20 people in question had filmed his concert and put the videos on the internet. The films enraged the star and I have to say that I would feel the same way. Why do people feel that they have the right to film somebody’s show without their

D

permission and then flash it all over the internet? There was an outcry by some of his fans and he has backed down as long as the videos are removed from the net. This has now been done. Copyright is a difficult thing to police these days. Everyone with a phone has a camera and a video facility. It takes little effort to film people and put those videos in the public domain. It does, however, take a lot of effort to put a show together.

These ideas, once put on YouTube can be easily copied by others who haven’t even paid to see the show in the first place. Theatres and cinemas have never allowed filming and people have been known to be ejected from theatres if they have been caught filming. I would say, at least ask the act’s permission before you stick your phone in the air like a meerkat.

boring

On’t YOu think that cars all look the same as each other? in the beginning, when the Ford Model t came out, future cars all had the same look. Possibly the best time for cars was the sixties to the early eighties.

Cars looked different. The companies went for design rather than economy and you could look at almost any motor and recognize the car immediately. Nowadays, I find that a van is basically a van. You might find that one van has a bigger bumper, but if you park them next to each other they are similar. I wish that the car companies would do something a

little different. The mini is a really stylish looking vehicle that stands out from an otherwise boring crowd. Other cars like the beetle have been toned down in recent years and the new Rolls Royce simply looks like another big car.

Wouldn’t it be nice to see cars like the Citroen 2CV back on the road along with the Ford Anglia and the Morris Minor? The Mini Clubman was a treat. Its part wooden body gave it a class and style above the rest.

comedy, action and voiceovers for cartoons. he made over 90 movies.

Many of his movie peers have said that his death was sad. They have said that he is an immense loss to the industry. They have hailed him as probably the best movie actor of his day and said that he had so much more to give. I loved his movies. He managed to add a quality to the parts that he played that only actors like Jack Nicholson or Robert De Niro are able to do. The one thing that I don’t seem to have read anywhere is what a total fool and how utterly selfish this man was. He apparently had over 70 bags of heroin in his apartment. He took drugs and he overdosed on them. He killed himself and he has destroyed his family and friends into the process. He will always be a great actor to me but he is also one of the world’s most foolish and idiotic men.

KINDNESS P r i n C e Charles has been visiting the flood damaged areas of somerset. it is easy for people to be cynical about Charles. some would say that seeing the Prince trudging through their sodden land a

Charles has made a donation to the cleanup campaign and I think he should be applauded for that. He has done so much over the years to help communities and create work for places in Scotland. I think it is high time for the press to give this man a bit of credit where credit is due.

Chinese new year

t

he 15-DaY celebration of Chinese new Year started last Friday, with the first new moon of the calendar year. the day marks the end of the year of the water snake and welcomes the start of the year of the wooden horse. the Chinese zodiac – or Shēngxiào – is a calendar system originating in the han dynasty (206-220bC), which names each of the years in its 12-year cycle after

an animal: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig, in that order. according to the system, the universe is made up of five elements – earth, water, fire, wood and metal – which interact with the 12 animals, resulting in the specific character of the year ahead. Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese

New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal’s year would have some of that animal’s personality. People born in the year of the horse, often display horse-like characteristics. They are animated, active and energetic, and they have a straightforward and positive attitude towards life, they love being in a crowd. They are quick to learn independence, just like foals can walk minutes after birth. They are known for their communication skills and wit. Rembrandt, Harrison Ford, Aretha Franklin, Chopin, Sandra Day

O’Connor, and President Theodore Roosevelt were born in the year of the horse. At Chinese New Year celebrations people wear red clothes, decorate with poems on red paper, and give children “lucky money” in red envelopes. Red symbolizes fire, which according to legend can drive away bad luck. The fireworks that shower the festivities are rooted in a similar ancient custom. Long ago, people in China lit bamboo stalks, believing that the crackling flames would frighten evil spirits. Kung hei fat choy! Happy Chinese new year!

HoMe AnD gArDening By Linda Barratt

t

eXPeCTing a ValenTine rose ?

he rOse is a elegant, sumptuous and fragrant flower suitable for many types of arrangements in every room around your home; so i thought i would try and give you a few ideas and tips for the care of this beautiful flower.

For instance...try tucking three short roses into a seashell to display in your bathroom or upon a nightstand. A single rose is a surprisingly sweet welcome to your friends when “served” in a champagne flute as a place setting for your dinner guests. Or why not turn a traditional bouquet arrangement within a vase into a sassy centerpiece by inserting a few black feathers (available at craft and hobby stores) amid the flowers. Consider clustering your roses to one side of your vase/container and then prop upwards

into the remaining space with various greenery of your choice. In fact have you ever even thought of using parsley in your display?...and why not! The dense ruffled leaves and vivid green colour pair delightfully with any delicate shade of rose.... What a energizing fragrance combo for any kitchen/living space. Have a shot at arranging a few short stems of roses of various lengths into a shallow glass bowl filled with pebbles and surround the edge with greenery (or even use the discarded rose leaves) for a bountiful look...Or even look for a container of contrasting colour to your chosen rose. This is in fact one of my all time favourites. The simplest of arrangements, with virtually no arranging to do. All that you need are single stems of chosen roses (you could even mix the colours) and greenery per container. Just find yourself a collection of narrow bottles or glassware in various heights and shapes and simply group together. The smallest container (say a shot

glass) placed to the fore, could even only contain a single leaf. The other glasses or containers would then hold a single rose stem, or greenery in various shades, cut to differing lengths, varying heights. Spread your containers out or cluster them together, the choice is yours. It is a very beautiful and simple idea that always draws me upon passing to move around like chess pieces on a board. Before you even begin to be creative with your arrangement it is extremly vital to prep your roses. Firstly wrap your roses in newspaper to protect them, then snip a quarter inch off the stems and place in one inch of boiling water. The shock forces the air out and allows the stems to fill with water. Leave until the water turns tepid, give a fresh small cut and transfer to cool water. Always use sharp clean scissors and cut at a 45 degree angle. Roses never re-cut after picking can loose up to 60 % of their vase/ arrangement life. Any foliage or thorns that will be below water in your vase/container should be re-

moved to ensure the water stays as fresh as possible. Next we need to prepare the solution your roses will be displayed in and drinking from. There are many secrets to keeping cut roses fresher longer other than shop bought additives...secrets that are in everyday use about our homes. Here are just a few of them:Sprite..crushed aspirin and 1 teaspoon sugar...quarter teaspoon of bleach plus 1 teaspoon sugar... vodka(or any clear spirit) few drops plus 1 teaspoon sugar...copper coin(acts as a acidifier plus 1 teaspoon

sugar..3teaspoons white vinegar to 1 teaspoon sugar...its endless.. but all the above can be mixed with one litre of warm water to use in your arrangements, they really do work surprisingly well. It’s the sugar that nourishes the flowers and any other chosen ingredient that inhibits bacterial growth, which is the cause of all flowers fading fast. But as always with flowers it is the temperature of display location that has a tremendous effect on their life, so where possible, display in a cool area, out of direct sunlight; and enjoy.

a Cool green Corner

a

PatCh of green in the corner of your garden or home is an ideal space to retreat, relax and take advantage of summers fresh air and sunshine. incorporate comfortable seating, accented with colourful cushions and tranform a simple space into a inviting retreat for yourself and friends.

Apart from placing pots, plants and hanging baskets, look into the entire feel of the space, as this could make an ideal well lit retreat for reading and enjoying a cuppa once the daily grind of jobs and chores are through. You could have potted plants on the floor along with lush greenery such as ferns, palms

and aloe vera. Hang in baskets on walls or over railings, plants and flowers with heady fragrances and colours such as geraniums. In a garden make use of a trellis to plant ivies, climbers and vines; or just use to hang containers upon to give a more secluded corner. An interesting option would be to build your own seat with a ledge of stones, or just go for the more traditional of instant outdoor furniture in wicker, wrought iron or plastic. There is such a large variety out there to choose from....so make it your own. Use colourful flowerpots and multi-coloured flowers amid your green oasis. Kerosene lamps and lanterns give pleasant soothing light sources in your garden as do candles, specifically anti-insect candles with citronella aroma.

Adding a little water to your set area, large or small, can magically enliven the space whilst recreating all the elements of nature within it. Surround your water feature with green plants-incorporate it into your oasis and see the difference it makes. Now why not bring that patch of green oasis into your home. Make use of that nook, cranny, corner or under the stairs space and bring a spot of tranquility into your life...no matter how small the space be. Throw down a rug or make use of a little artificial grass and enjoy outdoors in. You can still use indoor lamps for lighting and have a small water feature, even your own comfortable seat. It’s now so easy to source a small tabletop water feature... and they don’t have to go onto a table you

know...again surround with plants and incorporate. Burn indoor fragrant candles, have bright flowers and greenery in pots on the floor and walls-blissful serenity....You’d be doing your lungs a favour too as plants keep the air clean and balance indoor humidity.(not only do plants inhale pollutants, but they also remove harmful gasses in the air and help fight pollution).Try spider plants and differing ferns. Make use of corner walls by planting vertically into colourful pots upon them; including your favourite flowers and even herbs. Illuminate that corner....it will illuminate your life too. Go on give it a try....you never know you might even find yourself wanting to add a little chandelier in there too.

Scorching Ash Clouds Kill 16

aquarius 20 January to 18 February

A sparkly transit midweek could coincide with an invitation or outing that you’ll really enjoy. Connecting with folks on your wavelength could give you a muchneeded boost. Later, if you need to take things easy, opt for a lighter schedule - it could help ease any tension. You’ll also get a chance to reflect on any unresolved issues. Mercury moves into Pisces and your personal financial zone, so an intuitive hunch could reveal a way to earn some extra cash.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

An issue with a friend or group could cause some angst, so try to resolve this before it comes to a head. If you feel coerced into following others’ plans, it might be time to stand up for what you want. Venus forges ahead in Capricorn, which could make a positive difference to a friendship, especially if there have been recent issues with this person. You may find your voice and feel like sharing thoughts, plans, and ideas as Mercury moves into your sign.

aries 21 March to 19 April

Your social life continues to be a source of fun, as a meeting may have special sparkle. However, you might be noticing tensions in the balance between home and career that could set you thinking. If you’re considering setting up a home business or making the next career move, proceed carefully and do your homework first. The more prepared you are, the easier it may be to get ahead. Venus turns direct, easing relationship issues. Mercury in Pisces may attune you to your deeper thoughts and feelings.

taurus 20 April to 20 May

Venus forges ahead this week after its retrograde phase. You may find that areas of your life that have been prone to delays or backtracking, such as finances or relationships, slowly begin to sort themselves out. Someone could oppose a plan or idea of yours this week, which could be a bit of a blow. However, it’s worth trying to compromise if possible. Mercury enters your social zone on Friday, bringing a chance for more fun, invitations, and good times ahead.

gemini 21 May to 21 June

Finances could be an issue, especially if you’re geared up to make a major purchase. Don’t rush into anything, especially if it’s a big commitment. It might help to do a little more research. Mercury moves into Gemini and your career zone later. This might enhance any intuitive insights, saving you time and resources if you’re prepared to listen. Venus turns direct, too, which might help joint financial affairs flow more smoothly and gradually bring an end to any delays.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

A relationship issue could come to a head this week. However, there’s a chance you may be able to come to a compromise that works for both of you. Whether this is a business or romantic issue, a careful approach could be helpful for both parties. Venus turns direct in your relationship zone, which may help ease any tension you’ve felt recently. Hopefully, things can get back on track. Meanwhile, subjects linked to mysticism and mystery may appeal and encourage you to explore further.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

A fun link may inspire you to explore a new place or perhaps expand your horizons. If a friend wants to join you, you might enjoy going on an adventure together. Later, you may need to retreat for a while, especially if you’ve been hard at work. Don’t feel guilty about taking some time out, as it will give you a chance to relax and recharge. Venus turns retrograde in your lifestyle zone, which may help ease any wellness issues along with matters at work.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

n inDOnesian volcano named Mount sinabung has erupted killing 16 people, including 4 high school students on a sightseeing trip to the volcano on indonesia’s sumatra island. Villagers ran for their lives as Sinabung, which had been quiet for around 400 years until it rumbled back to life in 2010, and again in September last year, erupted at SigarangGarang village in Karo district, Indonesia, spewing molten lava and hot ash clouds after a series of huge eruptions thundered from the volcano, officials have said. Mount Sinabung, which has been rumbling for months, sent hot rocks and scorching ash

up to 2,000m (16,000ft) into the air. The four high-school students and their teacher were killed on the excursion to see the volcano up close, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency. A local television journalist was also among the dead. Officials fear there could be more fatalities. Mr Nugroho said: “We suspect there are more victims but we cannot recover them because the victims are in the path of the hot (ash) clouds,” More than 30,000 people have taken refuge since Sinabung, on the island of Sumatra, started erupting in September.

Wave At The Bus!

You might experience some conflict as a powerful link comes to a head this week. If you spot this coming, try to deal with it sooner rather than later to avoid unnecessary problems. However, someone may need to back down, and it could be you! As Mercury moves into Pisces, you may find it easier to tune into others and their needs, which could give you an advantage in business or romance. Creative and romantic issues may begin to resolve as Venus turns direct.

libra 23 September to 23 October

A fun transit could bring someone new and interesting into your life midweek. Whether this turns into a friendship or something a little more, you’ll enjoy this chance to have a delightful experience. Venus turns direct in your home zone, which might help matters with family members to work out harmoniously, especially if you’ve experienced problems lately. Finally, Mercury moves into your wellness zone, which might make you curious to research avenues to better health. A book could be especially inspiring!

scorpio 24 October to 21 November

You might feel like kicking back and enjoying a break, but it seems you’ll be kept busy. If you’re hoping to push ahead with a plan or idea, you could face red tape or objections from other people that might cause delays. There may be no way round this aside from doing your homework and taking things step by step. You could get some intuitive help with a budding romance as Mercury moves into Pisces. Venus moves ahead from this week, which may help ease a communication difficulty.

sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

Midweek you may feel alert, lively, and eager to connect with new people, move ahead with a creative project, or even take the first step with a new romance. You might need to tread with care with your finances, as a powerful transit could cause you to rethink your strategy. This isn’t a good time to make a major purchase - reorganize your budget instead. Venus turns direct in your personal financial zone, which could help ease any delays you’ve been experiencing.

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January

Try not to make a conflict worse than it already is by insisting on having your way. If you can be willing to compromise and consider a different approach, things could turn out well for everyone involved. Venus turns direct this week, which might help improve a relationship situation. Perhaps it will inspire a fresh perspective that has a harmonious impact. Mercury moves into Pisces, which might enhance your intuition and imagination in a positive way.

resCue operation was carried out after a bus carrying 14 passengers was swept onto seafront and left stranded by massive waves last saturday night. the bus was hit by a massive wall of water as it travelled along the coast near newgale in West Wales at roughly 7pm last saturday night. Emergency teams including fire, police and ambulance crews also attended the scene and there have been no reported injuries. Milford Haven Coastguard received a call advising them the vehicle was stuck and surrounded by water, following high tides and

wind speeds of up to 50mph. Steve Matthews from Swansea Coastguard said: ‘There are tricky conditions on the sea and along the coast, with gale force winds, high tides and heavy rain. Our advice is simple, please don’t take risks. But if you do get into difficulty, or spot someone who might be in trouble, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’ The incident occurred as heavy rain and high spring tides were expected to lash weatherbeaten parts of the UK with even more misery this week. The Met Office issued severe weather warnings of strong winds and torrential rain for parts of the south-west, south Wales and Northern Ireland.

F i Was to go to an indian restaurant i will usually always have butter Chicken, and the one they serve in Krishna’s tandoori in the Patch is superb! but is it a butter sauce? not really… but butter is a very small ingredient

in the recipe. this recipe is fantastic, really easy; it’s as spicy as you want tangy and super aromatic. even the left overs are every bit as delicious as day one.

750g chicken breasts 3 Tbsp. butter 3 cloves garlic 1 med onion

1 inch fresh ginger 1 Tbsp. garam masala ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper 350g tomato Frito

Garam masala is a major flavour component for this dish and can’t be skipped. In regu-

lar supermarkets it can be pricy, so search a good Indian food shop (there’s one just behind the Hiperdino Supermarket in Fanabe village, just underneath an apartment block that sells everything!), you’ll pay a fraction of the price. You can use Chicken thighs or legs if you prefer but I normally make this with breast meat.

ingredients:

MethOD:

triM the Fat from the chicken breasts and cut them into small chunks. Set chicken aside. Dice the onion and mince the garlic and ginger. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium/high heat. When the butter is nice and hot (careful not to burn it) add the chicken chunks and brown them on all sides. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside. It’s okay if it isn’t cooked through because it will simmer in the sauce later. Reduce the heat to medium and add the onions, garlic and ginger. Sauté the mix for 2-3 minutes or until they begin to soften. Add the garam masala and cayenne pepper. Continue to cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Add the tomato frito and diced tomatoes. Stir until everything is evenly combined. Add the chicken back in, place a lid

350g can diced tomatoes 60g plain yogurt 300g jasmine or basmati rice 700ml water

on top and reduce the heat to medium-low. Allow the mixture to simmer for one hour or until the chicken is tender and cooked through. While the pan is simmering, begin to cook the rice. Combine the rice and water in a medium pan. Place a lid on top and heat over a high heat until boiling. Once it comes to a full boil, immediately reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, turn the heat off and keep the lid in place until ready to serve. After the chicken and tomato mixture has simmered, break the chicken into smaller pieces if desired (the chicken should be soft and easily broken apart). Stir in the plain yogurt. Serve the chicken mixture over a bed of rice. Garnish with cilantro.

Smoking Ban For Cars Carrying Kids

P

lanned amendment to the Children and Families Bill by Labour would make it illegal to smoke in a car carrying children. In some states in America, Australia, Canada and a few countries in Europe the law is already in place and Shadow health secretary Andy Burnham says Britain should follow suit: “When it comes to improving the health of children, we are duty bound to consider any measure that might make a difference. Adults are free to make their own choices but that often does not apply to children and that’s why society has an obligation to protect them from preventable harm.” Luciana Berger, the shadow public health minister, accused the government of ignoring evidence supporting the ban and trying to “kick this issue into the long grass”. She said: “A single cigarette can create concentrations of tobacco smoke in a car that is 23

times more toxic than in a typical house. Ministers have scrapped research that the last Labour government commissioned on smoking in cars with children. They have tried to kick this issue into the long grass and that’s why labour has brought forward these proposals today and why we are going to force the vote in parliament. Nearly half a million children in England are exposed to potential toxic levels of second hand smoke in family cars every single week and that’s why we are calling for action.” Pro-smoking groups think a legal ban is unnecessary and insist most adult smokers choose not to light up when they are in a car with children. Simon Clark, director of Forest, said: “I think this legislation is very heavyhanded, totally unnecessary and according to surveys 84 per cent of adults wouldn’t dream of lighting a cigarette in a car, in a small enclosed space with a child present. So adults already know how to behave, they don’t need the state interfering in their lives

like this. If there are still some people who smoke in a car with children, then lets educate them, but let’s not legislate. It’s almost going to be impossible to enforce anyway and the danger is that the police will have to ban smoking in all cars. We could have a situation were a lone driver, in his own car will be committing an offence by lighting a cigarette and what’s the next logical step after that? Are we going to ban smoking in the home as well if children are present.” But Ms Berger said Labour had no plans to widen the ban: “That’s not what we are saying, we are talking about the very specific issue of children in a car that don’t have a choice which vehicle they are in that are subjected to levels of toxic smoke which are 23 times more toxic than in the home.” Chief executive of the British Lung Foundation Dr Penny Woods said: “Research has shown that smoking in a car, even with the windows open or air conditioning on, can create levels of pollution that ex-

Vegway? Segspa?

A

Catalonian design house has clad a Segway in vintage Vespa parts to create a new scooter that is self-balancing, silent and can scale hills, and it can be yours for £2,400

Modified using real panels from iconic Piaggio scooters, Bel & Bel claims the ‘Zero Scooter’ is easier to use than an ordinary Segway as it does not move under foot or lean when a person gets on. The company also claims it is the only scooter able to climb slopes up

to 30° and can turn 360° on the spot like a normal Segway, thanks to its two independent motors. The vehicle has a top speed 12.4mph (20kmp) and can carry 180kg. It has a range of 19 to 22 miles (30 to 35km). The Spanish scooter is electric, built by hand and can be customised by colour and finish, as well as by adding logos, finishes and a basic version costs 2,899 euros. Because the scooter is electric it is environmentally friendly and virtually silent, despite resembling a classic petrol scooter designed in 1946.

Cold ambition J

aVier FernanDeZ the first spaniard to win a major figure skating title by striking gold at the 2013 european championships arrived in sochi for the Winter Olympics this week.

Days before the 22-year-old got the gold in Zagreb, his skates got lost in transit. Turning up in Zagreb without the blades could have proved to be a major catastrophe for Fernandez as it takes days, if not weeks, for skaters to break into new boots, but Fernandez kept his cool and grabbed the gold for Spain: “I have to make sure I lose my skates again! I should tell the (person) at the check-out counter to make sure the skates are not put on the same flight. When bad things happen and when everything goes wrong, I get stronger and am more determined to do my best.” Almost 50 million Spaniards are pinning their hopes on Javier ending

Spain’s 22-year medal drought at the Winter Games:”My medals last year showed everybody that a Spanish skater can be out there fighting for the top prize at the Olympics,” said Fernandez, who also scooped a bronze at the 2013 world championships. “It’s surprising for the Spanish people that a good skater has actually come out from the country. That’s something we never had before. So Spanish people are really getting into the sport and they are starting to care about what I do.” Spain is a sport obsessed country who boast world champions from soccer to Formula One and cycling to tennis, but their record at the Winter Olympics is a little embarrassing for Sporting Superpower; Two medals, one gold for Francisco Fernandez Ochoa in 1972 and a bronze for his sister and fellow Alpine skier Blanca Fernandez Ochoa in 1992, is the sum total of their success from 18 Games dating back to 1936. Fernandez is determined to impove on that: “It’s a big honour to be at the Olympics and carry your country’s flag at the Olympics and

it’s a good thing for me to do that,” Fernandez said before reminiscing about the years when he was mercilessly teased by schoolboy bullies for pursuing a ‘girl’s sport’ In a soccer-mad country like Spain, many people still think that figure skating is for girls and that will continue until the sport doesn’t get bigger. But now a lot of guys who usually follow soccer are commentating on the Internet that they think it’s amazing that we have Spanish figure skater competing well and getting medals. So that’s a good step. If my success helps to get other people into the sport and they become successful, it could become very successful in Spain.” To become the first Spaniard to win an Olympic medal on blades, he plans to perform three soaring quadruple jumps in his free programme as “it’s worth a lot of points” and once that is out of the way on February 14, there will be only one thing he will be looking forward to. “When season is done then I’ll find a warm place and go to the beach and relax and just get out of the cold,” he laughed.

barca Fan designs a Professional rival stadium With a difference F

OllOWing uP on last week´s story about golf professional Chris Davies from england, another of our sports reporters met another very interesting golf pro out at adeje on Monday. laurent Petit from belgium is a golf pro with a difference – a fully qualified lawyer, he abandoned the courthouse for the golf course and he has never regretted it.

h

e’D better do a good job! real Madrid’s new stadium will be designed in part by a season ticket holder at arch-rival FC barcelona. Josep ribas, an architect at the Catalan firm, is a season ticket holder at FC barcelona - a fact which proved a stumbling block for some of real Madrid’s direc-

tors.

The Spanish football club’s new Santiago Bernabeu stadium will be designed by a group led by a German firm, GMP Architekten, and includes Spanish architects Ribas & Ribas. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is determined to make the club’s new 80,000 seat stadium the best in the world. It is due to be built by 2017 at a cost of £330m.

Renowned for his expertise in the technical aspects of golf, I saw him win the admiration of a former Irish amateur International who is in Tenerife for a few week´s winter practice. Two tips, one on chipping and one on putting, saw the Irish man leave Adeje with rejuvenated vigour. Laurent has been at Adeje since it opened sixteen years ago and has earned

the respect of golfers of every handicap range. I would recommend a visit – it will be well worth the money. I got a contact number – in case you are interested – 687 019 455. interesting People You will always meet interesting people when you visit golf clubs. Calling into the superb golf complex at Las Americas for a bite of lunch, I came across Michael Kelly from Glasgow. One word borrowed another

and the subject of football came up – if you come from Glasgow you are one of two things – a Rangers fan or a Celtic fan. In Michael´s case he is a Celtic supporter and for good reason - his grandfather, James Kelly, was centre-half and captain of the team which took the field in 1888 – Celtic´s inaugural year. Incidentally his grandfather also played for Scotland.

L

uis Aragonés, who coached Spain to glory at UEFA EURO 2008 after a successful playing career with Club Atlético de Madrid, has passed away at the age of 75 last Saturday. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced:

“The RFEF is sorry to announce the death of Luis Aragones,” read a statement on their website. “The RFEF wants to express its pain and consternation at the death of a man who was a player and coach at a number of Spanish clubs and around the world, and the Spanish national team coach at the beginning of its most glorious era of success at international level. Luis Aragonés – from Madrid – took Spain to victory at the 2008 European Championship. He passed today at the Clínica Centro de Madrid.”

Tenerife Weekly - 7th February 2014 - 13th February 2014

Former Spain coach dies As well as the Spanish national side, Aragones managed 10 different clubs during a 35-year coaching career. He is most fondly remembered at Atletico Madrid, with whom he won La Liga in 1976/77 and three Copa del Rey titles across three spells in charge. ‘The Wise Man of Hortaleza’, as Aragonés was widely known, is above all remembered for leading Spain to glory at UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, the nation’s first major tournament win since 1964. That landmark triumph proved a springboard for further success, with the Roja going on to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2012 under Vicente del Bosque. Aragonés’s playing career began in 1957 with Club Getafe Deportivo and during the subsequent 17 years took in spells at teams such as Real Oviedo, Real Betis Balompié. It was at Atlético where he won three Liga titles and lifted the Copa del Rey twice, and where he also contested the 1974 European Champion Clubs’ Cup final against FC Bayern München. Los Colchoneros lost in a replay two days after Aragónes had netted in an initial 1-1 draw between the teams. As a coach, Aragonés’s

vast career was marked early on by success at the Atlético helm, where he clinched the Liga in 1977 and also added Intercontinental Cup and Copa del Rey trophies. He coached a number of other Spanish clubs as well, including FC Barcelona from 1987

to 1988, but it was with Spain that he experienced his greatest victory, taking over in 2004 and leading the Roja to UEFA EURO 2008. His crowning glory came on the international stagein Austria and Switzerland in 2008 when he guided the until-

then perennially underachieving Spanish national side to their first major tournament victory since 1964. Despite emerging victorious over Germany in the final in Vienna, Aragones stood by his pre-tournament decision to step down as Vicente del Bosque took over to guide Spain to their first World Cup in 2010 before retaining their European title two years later. Aragones returned to management just once after leaving La Seleccion, at Turkish side Fenerbahce, but his reign was short lived as he was sacked after a disappointing first season in charge. Many sports figures have made tributes to the great man: Vicente del Bosque, Spain coach Without a doubt, he laid the foundations for this highly successful era. He had vast experience as a coach and, personally, I thought very highly of him. Enrique Cerezo, Club Atlético de Madrid president Above all, he was an Atlético man. On behalf of the club, I would like to offer our condolences to his

53

family. Luis Aragonés was a great player and coach, but more importantly he was a great person and a friend. David Villa, Club Atlético de Madrid and Spain forward It is a very sad day. We have lost one of the greats. Thank you for making me who I am. Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid CF and Spain midfielder We have lost one of the greats, it is a very sad day. His personality affected so many people’s lives. Fernando Torres, Chelsea FC and Spain forward Thank you, boss. I will never be able to thank you enough for everything you did for me. Cesc Fàbregas, FC Barcelona and Spain player We have lost a person who greatly affected both my professional career and me as a person. Thank you for everything.

Jamaican Bobsleigh Want Bolt!

J

amaican bobsleigh star Winston Watts wants the fastest man alive to give them some “Cool Runnings! He reckons sprint icon Usain Bolt would be a great addition to their squad once he quits the world of athletics – even though the Olympic track legend hate the cold and would rather wear cricket whites.

The world’s fastest man has expressed a desire to play cricket and football after retiring from top class athletics, but Watts wants him to try out for his country’s team if he ever tired of dominating the running track. Watts said after his team’s first Winter Olympics practice in Sochi: ‘Usain is a busy guy

– he doesn’t have my number and if a text comes in it will be a surprise,‘I’d love to know that he is behind us. He would be a very good pusher but he is not the kind of person who likes cold. He has definitely said that. But it would be awesome to have him on my team because, you know, a strong guy like me, and Bolt who is very fast … can you imagine … A good combination.’ Meanwhile, Watts confirmed the team’s missing luggage and equipment, lost en route to Sochi, had arrived late on Wednesday. But the 46-year-old added: ‘It was full of protein powder (that had spilled in the container). ‘My helmet that I was wearing today, I had protein in my eyes.’

i

F anYOne doubted that CD Marino are genuine promotion contenders this 0-1 win at leaders granadilla will have underlined their credentials. earlier in the season Marino won 4-2 at home, not many teams will record the double over the clear leaders. It was a tight game with several players lining up against their former team mates but both sides made clear chances.

Pulido lost the ball early in the game but Nabil put his shot across the visitors goal and missed the target. Murci went close on the half hour, it needed a good save from Saul in the home net to stop him from grabbing the lead. Marino showed plenty of character in the second half to frustrate their hosts and score the vital goal with a cross from the right finding Lamine who finished perfectly. Both sides finished a player short as the ref gave second yellow cards to Marchena of Granadilla and Pablo

of Marino. This Sunday CD Mensajero are the visitors to Las Americas for a noon kick off, entry is just 8 euros with kids getting in free.

Turkey Trot

h

e’s big in Montenegro and became even bigger in la laguna but has now blagota sekulic has left iberostar tenerife to play for Fenerbahce in turkey.

The 32year old 6 foot 10 pivot has been in scorching form in Spain’s elite ACB League this season and it was known that several other clubs were keen on signing him but the move

just a few days short of the Copa del Rey weekend in Malaga is a massive blow. Tenerife lost 84-76 away to Obradoire in Compostela last weekend but Blagota blasted another 22 points. Nico Richotti weighed in with 14, and Saul Blanco made 13. It was only in the final quarter that Tenerife showed their teeth taking that 17-22 but the damage was done by then. That drops Tenerife to 10 th spot, maybe they had one eye on this weekend

when they start the knock out competition against Barcelona. Even against such formidable opponents Tenerife had high hopes but the move happened quickly on Monday once Tenerife agreed to cancel his contract. In a season and a half in Tenerife Blagota had become a big favourite but Turkey wont phase him as he previously performed in Greece, Italy, and Germany. The search is on for a replacement but they are big shoes to fill.

hat a great way to end a home goal drought, three corkers for a 3-0 win over Mirandes, and it could have been double that for CD Tenerife. The four January signings didn’t get a look in and will wonder how they can push their way into the team, the urgency and confidence was back in the play and every attack carried a threat. Borja Perez has had plenty of well deserved stick from the fans for failing to make an impact but filling in for the suspended Aridane he had his best game

in the white shirt and within 10 minutes treated us to a neat back heel and a lovely set up for Ayoze that was blocked. Suso was stoked up blowing smoke out of his nostrils, he blasted down the right wing all game and unpacked his entire bag of tricks. On the other flank full back Camara was pushing forward more than ever and lowly Mirandes just couldn’t cope. Prieto had to make strong saves from Suso and then an Ayoze header but the breakthrough came after 35 minutes. Ayoze teased the defence as he held up the ball before releasing it for Carlos Ruiz to run in and score. Mirandes looked a poor side,

even former Tenerife starlet Iriome couldn’t breath life into them. Home keeper Roberto could have done with a stool in his goalmouth but at least one attempt from a corner warmed his hands a little. More goals were a certainty in the second half, Ayoze mesmerized the defence and they

nearly tucked it into their own net, a few minutes later he scooped a shot just over the bar from an acute angle. Borja went off for Rivero after 62 minutes and the unthinkable happened, he got a warm round of applause from the 9,633 crowd for a job well done.

Sunday Is Run Day In Santa Cruz And La Laguna

T

here will be a lot of energetic people putting the rest of us to shame on Sunday with two big running events taking place up north.

The earliest start is at Las Teresitas beach just beyond

Santa Cruz for the Tri Santa Cruz triathlon, they will be down on the sand for 8.30am. The route goes along the main coast road ending up at Plaza de Espana so expect some road detours from the bus station onwards. The main swim, cycle, and

run event has attracted 400 entrants with nearly a third coming from beyond Spain. There is also a Half Endurance race for those not quite ready for the big challenge. Further north in La Laguna the ladies take centre stage in the 6th annual Carrera de

la Mujer for the fight against cancer. This starts at 11am with a circular route around the historic city centre starting and finishing at Plaza del Cristo. It’s roughly 3 kms and with collections and the 6 euros entry fee it should raise a good sum for this important cause.

Suso was still a menace down the right and a deep ball from Ricardo set him off on another run, he toyed with two defenders before placing his shot perfectly to make it 2-0. How about a third? This time the two stars linked up brilliantly, Suso raced through, Ayoze was on his wavelength and

when the dipping cross came in he ran onto it and headed his 10th goal of the season – what class. No wonder Liverpool are the latest team to show an interest in him. That puts Tenerife up to 11th with a tough away game at Barcelona B on Sunday at 4pm.
