Editorial

Well, here we are heading towards the 4th week in January already!! I really don’t know where the days are going but I guess it’s true what they say about the older you get, the faster the months fly by! It’s an animal packed issue this week, completely unintentionally I might add, it just seemed to work out that way, with wild stallions roaming mainland Spain to doggies dogpaddling to scary giant spiders to the

Tenerife Weekly - 17th January 2014 - 23rd January 2014 reasons why you can’t trust your cat, it’s all in here! There’s also our regular article from the good people at Live Arico and this week Accion del Sol join them in the never ending struggle to re-home the unfortunate lost and abandoned dogs they work so hard to help, I do hope some of you can help them make a dogs day. Last week we wished Steve Andrews well as he wrote his last feature, well this week, I’m pleased to welcome our new columnist Linda Barratt on board! You can find her on Steve’s old page (35) with her new section on Homes and Gardens!

THINGS ARE LOOKING UP! Continued from page 1 2013 SMASHES SPANISH TOURISM RECORD AND TENERIFE MAKES GLOBAL HOLIDAY TOP 10 FOR 2014!

T

he Costa del Sol, Tenerife, and Mallorca were all listed among the top holiday rental destinations for 2014 as Spain swept the board in a best holiday destination competition.

This news comes the same week as industry association Exceltur announced that a record 60.4 million tourists descended on Spain in 2013, as the crisis-hit country looked to the sector to lift it out of its economic doldrums. Britons, Germans and French made up the biggest groups of visitors in 2013. Jose Luis Zoreda, vice president of Exceltur said:

“In 2014, we believe that the tourism sector will be the engine of growth for the Spanish economy,” The 2014 projections are by one of the UK’s most popular holiday accommodation rental portals Alpha Holiday Lettings, are based upon client inquiries and web bookings throughout 2013, which were used to predict the destinations for holiday travel and activity in the coming year. There are seven European destinations in the top 10, the always popular Paris with its historic landmarks and fabulous cultural attractions, is a notable fourth place pick, the UK made top 10 with Cornwall, which made the list at seventh place, but Spain represented almost half of the European

picks, the Costa del Sol ranked highly with third place, behind Dubai and Cyprus. Tenerife came in sixth, while Mallorca rounded out the favourites with a spot in 10th place. Florida and Sydney were the other non-European picks. As well as it’s perfect holiday climate of yearround sunshine and it’s luxurious setting, Dubai’s first place ranking is largely owed to its apparent immunity to the global economic downturn, and also the growing network of Dubai’s Emirates airline is making travel to the city cheaper and more accessible all the time. Still, with 3 spots in the top 10 for Spain and our very own Tenerife ranking number 6 in the world, the future seems bright for the Spanish tourism industry.

T

ourist numbers are out for 2013 in the Canary Islands and according to data provided by Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA), the Archipelago was visited by nearly 10.6 million foreign passengers in 2013, 4.85

per cent more than the previous year.

The month of December helped to make 2013 a bumper year with 1,063,844 passengers visiting from abroad, 124,239 more people than in the same month of 2012, some 13.22 per cent more. When the figures are broken down by island, Tenerife was

host to 397 185 foreign passengers in December, 36,292 more than in December 2012, representing an increase of 10.06% . The annual figures show Tenerife received a visit from 3,984,294 foreign passengers in 2013, representing an increase of 5 %, with 189,869 passengers more than in 2012.

When asked about the statistics, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Canary Islands, Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, said ” the tourism sector performed very well in the fourth quarter, closing with record numbers and moreover sector forecasts point to this trend carrying on for the rest of the winter season.”

NEWS ON 30m to Be Spent on tenerife THE ROCK “renovations” in 2014-15 The woman who suffered serious burns in an explosion at the four-star Bahia Principe hotel in Costa Adeje, is making a gradual recovery after being moved out of intensive care on Tuesday. Holidaymaker Kirsteen Hughes, aged 37 and of Fernside, Radcliffe, was badly burned when a food heater exploded at a poolside bar. She sustained serious burns to her face and scalp in blast on December 27 and spent 11 days under intensive care at the burns unit of a hospital in Santa Cruz. The incident also left eight-year-old daughter Robyn Anne with moderate burns to her neck and ear, with Kirsteen’s husband Stephen and a Belgian holidaymaker treated for minor injuries a 38-year-old woman was killed overnight in Guaza in what is apparently a case of domestic violence. Her killer, who police say is her 31-year-old partner, fatally stabbed her and then attempted suicide by throwing himself off the roof terrace of their apartment block. He is now in Candelaria hospital in critical condition, under police guard. Police say that this is the first “violencia de genero” case in the Canaries in 2014. a 38-year-old cyclist is in hospital in critical condition with head injuries after colliding with a car in El Tanque, the municipality next to Santiago del Teide. He was treated by a doctor and nurse from the El Tanque medical centre immediately after the accident and then transferred by helicopter to Candelaria hospital where he is said to be fighting for his life. sadly, salvamento Marítimo found the body of the windsurfer some 2.5 miles off the Arona coast on Wednesday. The poor man has been taken to Los Cristianos where the Guardia Civil were waiting to take over. Search teams were in operation since Monday evening looking for a 34-year-old Ukranian windsurfer who disappeared while windsurfing in El Médano around 6pm. The alarm was raised by a lifeguard, and this coincided with the man’s family calling emergency services themselves to report his disappearance. Salvamento Marítimo mobilised a helicopter and lifeboat, with the search resuming Tuesday morning with land search and rescue teams, and a GES helicopter, joining the sea and air efforts. on Monday, the 13th, from 12:30 pm a press conference took place at the Palacio Insular Noble Hall to serve as a presentation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the new brand that will promote the capital as a destination for conferences. The philosophy of this project is to make Santa Cruz become a premier destination capable of hosting all types of events, with profitable infrastructure and facilities in the city. The event was attended by President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, Vice President of the hotel employer Ashotel, Gabriel Wolgeschaffen, the council responsible for Development Society, Florentino Guzman CEO Tenerife Tourism, Miguel Angel Santos and the director of this initiative, Inaki Dominguez. The adeje council has invited children from local schools to get to know their heritage a little bit better, and this is particularly interesting for families who have come from other countries as it is a chance for the children to learn something more about where they are growing up, information their parents may not have access to. This next generation of Adejeros and Adejeras have been visiting different historic sites and buildings in the town as part of the ‘This Heritage is Ours’ programme designed for students from primary and secondary schools in the borough. The visits have been to the Canarian library and other historical buildings to learn more about what they have to offer, services and organisation. In this way the young people learn what cultural heritage means, why it’s worth preserving and the technical and economic difficulties that often hamper that conservation. Certainly one group of eight year olds who visited the Canarian library and were treated to a talk about the Guanches came home full of enthusiasm and a desire to learn more and read more about the island that is their home. They also visited the Casa Fuerte, the town’s Church and the Convent. Particularly for parents who are not Canarian but who have chosen to live here this is a great aid in helping our children appreciate the multicultural backgrounds they have, and no doubt we will soon be learning from them

oME 30m euro will be invested in Tenerife throughout 2014-15 to continue the regeneration of the main tourist areas. The injection of funds will be possible thanks to an agreement between the Cabildo, the ayuntamientos of santiago del Teide, adeje, arona and Puerto de la Cruz, and the hoteliers’ association ashotel. President of Tenerife Carlos alonso said that Tenerife was a national “reference point” in this type of agreement, which would see streets, beaches and other tourist spaces regenerated. he stressed that between 2007 and 2013 some 63.8m euro had already been spent on improvements in the four municipalities which, between them, accounted for some 90% of tourist beds in the island.

In Arona, the planned renovations will amount to an expenditure of some 4m euro covering five projects: parking spaces in Avenida Rafael Puig and the City Center plaza, the football grounds, Boulevard Chayofa, and landscaping for the TF1 border and junction 28 (Las Américas). In Adeje, money will be allocated to Calle Unterhacing in El Duque (the road down to the beach), the access to La Caleta from Fañabé, and the second phase of Calle Londres, works also

amounting to 4m. In Puerto de la Cruz, where investment of 2.7m will be made, works will be carried out to extend Calle de La Hoya, renovate the San Telmo promenade, and Calle Quintana (where the Hotel Monopol is). In Santiago del Teide, improvements will be made to plaza Bouganvilla, the mirador de Los Gigantes, the second phase of playa de los Guíos and the first phase of playa de La Arena. The total for Santiago del Teide’s works will amount to just under 3m. Beaches, including Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz, will see a total investment of 5,1m, whereas the Los Tarajales beach in Los Cristianos will be allocated 11.7m, and will involve a complete change of image for Los Cristianos bay. This project, said Sr Alonso, depended on agreement from the department of Costas, but the money was there ready to start at the point Costas gave the go-ahead.

fairYtaLeS from Spain part ii

few weeks back i wrote an article about the Fairytales of spain, i enjoyed writing it so much and it was very well received so because of this, and because i barely scratched the surface of the subject, i decided to do a follow up.

The Water of Life is a Catalan fairy tale. There were once 3 brothers and a sister who through hard work became rich enough to build a magnificent castle. But an old woman told them they should also build a church, so they built a church even more spectacular. Then an old man told then they needed a pitcher of the water of life. The oldest brother went on a quest for it and the old man gave his siblings a knife that would shine if their brother was safe or turn bloody if he was hurt. Meanwhile a giant told their brother to pass mocking stones without looking back and he would find his treasure. But the stones made him do angry he turned to shout at them and was turned to stone himself! Seeing the knife turn bloody both brothers tried and were also turned to stone. On the sisters turn she resisted

Tenerife Weekly - 17th January 2014 - 23rd January 2014 the urge to look and found the pool and filled her pitcher, walking past the stone, in tiredness she spilled some of the water which turned all the stones back into humans, the sister married a prince and they lived happily ever after! The wounded lion is the story of a peasant girl who, while herding cows discovers a wounded lion with a thorn in its paw. She helps it but loses her cows so her master beats her and sends her to herd donkeys. A year later the same happens and upon losing the donkeys she is beaten and left to look after pigs. The third time she waits to see if the pigs return, sat in a tree she watched a man come down the path and disappear behind a rock and a s she waited for him to reappear, the lion came out instead, she asks the lion who says he was a prince, enchanted by a giant who also stole her animals and the only way to save him and get the animals back is to present the giant with a cloak made from a lock of hair from the princess. After working for the princess she gets the hair in return for her finding a prince for the princess to marry. makes the cloak and when the giant asks what reward she wants she begs him to turn the lion back into a man. The giant says if she kills the lion, burns him and scatter the ashes into the water, the

prince would the arise. After the lion tells her to do it, it works and the prince asks the girl to marry him, devastated she weeps telling him she promised him to the princess, but on arriving at the palace the princess sees it’s her own brother! La hormiga y la cigarra (The ant and the grasshopper) is one of the most popular fairy tales in Spain. Both the young and the old know about this tale, it provides a moral lesson about the virtues of hard work and planning for the future and has been told for many years. “Once there lived an ant and a grasshopper in a grassy meadow. The ant would work hard, collecting grains of wheat from the farmer’s field far away. The grasshopper would sit around all day singing. He would look at her and laugh. ‘Why do you work so hard, ant?’ But the ant would ignore him. Summer turned into autumn, and autumn become winter. It became freezing cold outside. The grasshopper didn’t feel like singing any more. He was cold and hungry. He had nothing to eat. ‘Ah – I shall go to the ant and ask her for food’. So off he went to see the ant. ‘Hello ant! Here I am, to sing for you, while you get me some food’ The ant looked at the grasshopper and said, ‘All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me, and sang. You should have thought of winter then! It is wise to worry about tomorrow, today!” So, I hope you’ve enjoyed this 2nd installment of Spanish Fairy Tales as much as I’ve enjoyed finding them!

ErE’s a chance for anyone who wants to see a bit of Canarian tradition without having to leave the beach! The Fiesta of san sebastian in la Caleta is held on sunday 19 and Monday 20 January, and involves horsemen riding into the sea, and pastoral farmers dragging their goats and sheep into the water, for the animals to be blessed.

The event’s draw makes it almost more a spectacular tourist event than a religious one, but despite the tens of thousands of people who turn up to watch it, at its core is the celebration of a fiesta to San Sebastian, the saint who can ward off plagues, and so keep animals, and humans, healthy throughout the coming year. Details of the events are on Adeje’s web site adeje. es, but the main ones are a procession and fireworks followed by music on Sunday night from 7pm, and the blessing of the animals on Monday around midday after a mass in the church. Get there early … and just follow the crowds!

Search Called Off For Victor Teni u by janetanscombe.com

T

he financial vice-president, Efrain Medina, looks forward to the participation of outstanding athletes on the catwalk to support the textile sector.

More than forty models from Tenerife and the Canary islands will work in fashion shows to be held from 6 to 10 February at the Art Gallery Recova in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Young Designers Contest VI and professional Fashion conferences organized by the Cabildo of Tenerife. This week the first of the casting took place to choose the models participating in parades. The vice president and economic advisor insular Employment and Economic Development, Efraín Medina, said that, one of the novelties of this edition would be the Canarian outstanding athletes parade during the professional fashion shows, supporting the textile industry of the island.

Medina said that this is “an opportunity for the companies that belong to the program Tenerife Cabildo Fashion to give out their products, promote and market the internal market on the island and in the Canary Islands in general.” All efforts are made to publicize the collections and the most important trends in the textile industry which are exported all over the world. Medina also said over 30 parades are to take place where participants, designers and companies will have the opportunity to market and promote their collections. The financial vice-president said that it is a professional gateway whose main objective is “marketing and to create and maintain jobs.” Both the Young Designers Contest and professional fashion conferences will be held in la sala de arte la recova de Santa Cruz de Tenerife in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

NhaPPilY, the search for Victor Teni, the missing athlete was officially called off on Monday. The hard decision was taken after a meeting of all the forces involved in the rescue effort. Monday was the 12th day of searching, and Victor has been missing, for over a fortnight. From now, security forces will continue their investigation following the report of his disappearance, as is routine with any denuncia for a missing person, but the active search will end at dusk today. The Canarian government thanked all the teams and volunteers who have spent the last week and a half looking for Victor: Guardia Civil, Grupo de

Emergencias y Salvamento, Unidad Militar de Emergencias, Ejército de Tierra, Bomberos Tenerife, AEA, Cruz Roja, Protección Civil de Candelaria y La Laguna, Federación Tinerfeña de Montañismo, Parque Nacional del Teide, Teleférico, Parador Nacional del Teide, Guardas de Caza and the Cabildo’s environment department. Despite the search being officially called off, the Guardia Civil says the force itself will continue a constant and minute search for Victor in the Teide area. The investigation into his disappearance remains open, and despite some reports that the investigation

might be a “criminal” one, police say that this is not correct and that they are working on the assumption that his disappearance was accidental. Today, the Grupo Rural de Seguridad has been combing the area, and their efforts will be augmented by the arrival of two dogs trained specifically in searching for people missing in mountain areas.

Your voice in europe, your vote

paSta – taStiC! Slim Pasta® - Slim Rice® – Slim Noodles®

N

ow in Tenerife!!! The new “Eat Water” products include rice, noodles and pasta (spaghetti, penne and fettucine) which are made from a vegetable fiber called Moyu (Konjac).

Moyu has been consumed in Asia many centuries because of its healthy attributes. It contains, (and this is the incredible bit) only 12 calories per 100 grams of product, these being unabsorbable by the body, meaning that it is virtually zero calorie!! It is also free of carbohydrates, fat and gluten and was “Highly Commended” in the UK´s Free From Food Awards last year. The 200 gram (net weight) packs come sealed at ambient temperature, with the product stored in liquid. The instructions say to simply rinse it very well, then gently warm it through in a pan or microwave – better still just add it to your favourite meat, fish or sauce and heat the whole lot together - a healthy meal can be made in minutes. Slim Pasta® is paler in colour than normal wheat pasta, almost white and semi-trans-

parent. The texture is good, a little different to wheat pasta, but once added to other ingredients and their flavours, the dishes are delicious and good. And filling, another advantage, that as the product absorbs water it swells in the stomach, leaving you feeling full for up to four hours after eating. All in all, the range of products is amazing. Substitute wheat pasta penne with Slim Pasta® in your tuna pasta salad and the calorie content goes down by some 200 calories – fabulous! And Slim Rice® - delicious with a creamy prawn curry but with a fraction of the calories. Or add Slim Pasta® Noodles to your favourite soup or stir fry, the results will surprise you. All varieties are 2,95 euros per 200 gram pack, which serves 1 – 2 portions. For more information, visit www.slimpasta.es or our Facebook page www.facebook. com/slimpasta.es Purchase your Slim Pasta® online or ask your local supermarket to put it on their shelves. E

u CiTiZENs have the right to vote in their European country of residence If you are a European citizen you have the right (and many would say duty) to vote in the upcoming European elections, which are taking place on May 25th, 2014 in Spain. But if you’re not registered, your voice won’t be heard. You might think that what happens in Brussels or Strasbourg is too far away to affect us here in the Canary Islands, but nothing could be further from the truth. In-

Walker dies after fall in masca

creasingly, what happens at European level has a direct impact on our daily lives, particularly given the Canary Island’s status as an ‘ultraperipheral region’ and every vote counts. The closing date for inclusion on the electoral register is January 30th. Who can vote? Citizens from the following countries, resident here in Adeje, are eligible to vote: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia,

Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the UK, the Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden. However, to make sure you can exercise your vote you must be registered on the electoral census and the residents register – the ‘Padrón’– and have indicated your wish to vote in Spain in these European elections – this is to ensure that you don’t vote in more than one country. (Elections are taking place over a number of days, so theoretically it would be possible). The Electoral Census office has sent letters to many European citizens who have not already signed on the electoral census. If you have received such a letter all you have to do is sign it and return it to the indicated address. However, if you haven’t received any communication but would like to vote, call into the Adeje citizen’s bureau (OAC) in the Town Hall and say you wish to register on the electoral census for

the right to vote. You must be on the municipal residents register (Padrón) to do so. If you are not on the Padrón you can do this at the same time. You will need to bring your passport and your resident’s certificate ensuring that your address is up to date. There will also be a short period of time, still to be determined, after the closing date, when you can check that your details have been properly registered. As times are changing, so are we. Since the last European elections, the rules of the game have changed. The European Parliament now has more power, both to set the political direction of Europe and over the day-to-day decisions which affect us all. A more powerful European Parliament means more influence for everyone, more ability to deal with our problems, more ability to change what needs changing, more assertiveness to conserve what we want to keep. Your vote really counts, so make sure you have it, and use it.

He was rescued shortly after noon on Tuesday in an operation which involved a search and rescue helicopter, bomberos and paramedics, and he was flown to Hospiten Sur. He is said to have lost his balance in a part of the barranco that was particularly rocky and sustained injuries from which he could not be saved.

WHat’S SpaniSH for @?

i

T Was something i’d never really given any thought to before but since taking over as editor i find i’m increasingly having to deal with people on the phone who speak spanish or who can only speak a little English, i’m not going to lie, my spanish conversation skills aren’t brilliant, i’m far better at reading and writing but when i’m spoken to i often find i’m still translating their first sentence in my head when they are already on their 10th! One thing I’d never had to think about was email addresses in the native tongue, for me @ is simply @, but now, almost on a daily basis I’m finding myself having to take down or give out email addresses on the phone and it’s amazing how many grammatical symbols that you’ve never considered “words”

that have different names in Spanish, so I thought I’d list a few of the most used. @ The most common word in use is arroba. I n t e r e s t i n g l y, the word has been around a lot

longe r than email has. T h e word arroba is believed to have come from Arabic and has come to refer to a unit of weight equal to about 12.5 kilograms (about 27.5 pounds) or 11.502 kilograms, depending on the region. Arroba also came to refer

to various liquid measures varying from region to region. Although such measure-

ments a r e n ’ t standard or official, they still g e t some local usage. The arroba h a s long been sometimes written as @, which is a kind of stylized a. So when e-mail de-

Council Locks Lifeguards Out M

Live arico news

eet the lovely lucy, almost 1 year old. she had a bad start in life – do you remember the blind pups? Their eyes dried out and ulcerated when they were very young, but following our “never give up” ethos, we found an animal ophthalmologist and fund-raised enough money to cure them.

T

hE CouNCil is trying to employ “emergency lifeguards” while the process to award the contract for the service is still undergoing. arona’s environment councillor, antonio sosa, has announced that the council is looking to contract two or three lifeguards for a few months. let’s just repeat that. The council

is looking to contract two or three lifeguards …

ViVo will be holding their next Tea dance of the season on saturday 25th January. This time, however, there is a twist! Professional dance teacher beverley is offering 30 minutes tuition from 1pm, the first half hour is for people who have not danced before,

or have two left feet, so you can brush up your dance steps before the start, at 1.30pm.

This is the council that said it had nothing to do with contracting lifeguards or beach services, that it was completely illegal to pay the existing lifeguards their back pay because the council never employed lifeguards, and that a new contractor had to be in place before the council could employ lifeguards … So there you have it. There’s a job going working for Arona Ayuntamiento as a lifeguard. Any takers? This is farce. Except no-one’s laughing.

Lucy was the worst of the three, with only 5% vision at her worst time. Unfortunately she walked through the embers of a fire, unable to see the danger, and has lost 2 toes on one foot. Her eyes are now good however, and despite everything she has been through she is an absolute sweetie. Her foster carers can’t keep her any longer so we really need to find a home where she will receive the love she deserves. Please can you consider Lucy? If so call Sue on 629 388102. Don´t forget the oldies. Sadly, over the past few days we have taken in several

dogs of 10 years old or more, which is a crying shame. One wonders whether a Christmas puppy has taken the place of a senior member of the family, simply cast aside with the wrapping paper. A 12 year old Yorkie came to us via the police of San Miguel who is now thankfully adopted; a 10 year old blind schitzu was abandoned in Granadilla to fend for himself and an 11 year old poodle cross found by one of our customers and her dogs in a deep ditch, infested with parasites, maggots and fur so matted she could barely walk. The latter two are being fostered but efforts to locate their ”owners” are proving

fruitless. Please consider taking care of an old dog. Imagine how the above three must have felt, in family homes their whole lives only to find themselves alone and unloved. Abandoning any dog is unforgivable, but at this age it is a heartbreaking crime. We normally charge an adoption fee of 110 - 140 euros for younger healthy dogs but can be far more flexible with the over 10´s and can even offer ongoing vet care. Please contact us if you can help and would like to explore the possibility further. Thank you.

The shipwrecked yacht was called ”Overlander”, and had been sailing under the Spanish flag, though the rescue was hampered both by the fact that it wasn’t equipped with regulation emergency equipment such as a radio beacon and flares, and because the sailor only had a mobile telephone with which to communicate. He used this phone to call friends and family in the Canaries, France and Russia, rather than contacting emergency services, and he was

He was denounced to the public prosecutor for “civil disobedience”, specifically setting sail from Tenerife despite a ports authority prohibition. He was also required to pay for the costs of his rescue, which involved emergency services in a 48-hour mission including seven search and rescue helicopter flights. This time however, Authorities picked up Andrei Novoselov who is in search of political asylum, in southwest France as he at-

tempted to navigate his unseaworthy vessel up the Tet river to the Mediterranean Sea. Novoselov’s plan was to head for the United States, via Spain, after his application for asylum in France had been refused. Before setting off, he had told reporters that he wanted political asylum in France or the United States as he feared his life would be in danger if he returned to Russia. This was Novoselov’s second effort at escaping on a makeshift contraption, his previous attempt, in August, also ended in an arrest, and he was ordered to leave France.

he financial vicepresident, Efraín Medina, emphasizes her role as a true ambassador of Tenerife in the world

On November 9th Patricia Rodríguez Yurena was chosen first runner-up Miss Universe, in a contest that was held in Moscow. Also present were

Jaime González Cejas, mayor of Granadilla, municipality where Patricia was born. Representing Tenerife, she won the title of Miss Spain six years ago but could not participate in that Miss Universe as she had not turned 18. In this sense, Efraín Medina said that “life always gives a second chance” and “Patricia got it”. Also, he thanked the affection with which she took the name of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, “She has been a true ambassador for the island in the world,” said Patricia Medina who spoke of the promotion of Tenerife she had brought to Russia. T

he adeje councillor for heritage, desiderio afonso ruiz has uncovered, through interviews with some of the borough’s older residents, a relatively unknown story from the 1950s regarding a flash flood during the Feast of san sebastián, celebrated on January 20th. as has always been the tradition, and continues today,

hundreds of pilgrims walk with the statue from adeje to la Caleta, through fields and barrancos. “At that time the day of San Sebastián dawned bright and sunny, with people, animals, and carts taking part in the pilgrimage, when suddenly, around about midday, the skies clouded over and it began to rain with a fierce intensity. The barranco became a river, and many of the pilgrims were caught unawares.

One family were trapped on what had become an island in the middle of the barranco, and the level of the water had risen so quickly there was no way to save them. The Guardia Civil tried to throw them a rope to help pull them out but were unable to reach the family. The water was also rushing down the barranco with such force that people were shouting out to the saint himself to intercede to save the family. …According to the story, when the

picture of the saint arrived at the edge of the river, the waters calmed, “miraculously” and with the aid of a human chain, formed by the men of the party, including Don Antonio the shepherd, the family were saved. Since that day they say that San Sebastián calms the waters”. Councillor Desiderio has investigated the story, and says that as there is no written account of the events that took place, we need to rely on

oral sources. This story has passed, he says, from generation to generation. He took time to speak to a number of the borough’s older residents who have told him that they saw the event first hand, and others who weren’t present but who heard about the event the day it happened. He says we cannot be sure of the exact year of the flood, and that almost everyone he spoke to had a different date in their memory, from 1950

to 1933…”so”, he says “we believe it happened during the first half of the 1950s”. Desiderio has thanked those who took the time to tell him the tale, and includes Ana María Afonso Quintero, Pilar Afonso Pláceres, Maria del Carmen Rodriguez Quintero, Maria Luisa Vargas, José Francisco García, Ofelia Díaz Rivero, Antonio Rodríguez Rodríguez, Manuel Jesús Ramos Hernández and Francisco Lima Trujillo.

enerife honeys have achieved recognition as a European Protected designation of origin (Pdo), the last of the paperwork that was needed to endorse the quality of the product that is produced on the island is complete and now the European Commission has approved.

The insular Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt, expressed his satisfaction with this final endorsement from Brussels to Tenerife Honeys, a quality mark promoted by the Beekeepers Association of Tenerife (APITEN) with support from the Cabildo through the Casa de la Miel. “This is already the final approval of the DOP, after overcoming all the paperwork, which means Honey Island reserves are protected throughout the territory of the European Union,” says the director insular. José Joaquín Bethencourt said this is a boost for beekeepers in Tenerife in defending the quality and personality of the honeys of Tenerife, plus an excellent

opportunity to enhance the promotion and marketing of this product, and thus the value of honey produced on the island. The island’s product is characterized by a great variety of colors, flavors and types, reflecting the diversity of ecosystems and wildlife of the island. Specifications contain a number of requirements in the various production phases and defines a control system that guarantees the quality and origin of the honey covered. The characteristics of the multiflower honeys and 13 flower honeys of Tenerife, their specificities, their physicochemical peculiarities and other

additional requirements necessary to qualify for the protected designation of origin are also regulated. José Joaquín Bethencourt remarked that the Cabildo de Tenerife “has been working in both the recovery and

the quality of the honeys of Tenerife since 1996, date of the creation of the Casa de la Miel, through the certification mark Miel de Tenerife, under which large quantities of the product have been released in each campaign.

GIANT SQUID OVER 600 KILOS IN TENERIFE MUSEUM

T

he Cabildo redisplayed this week in the digital section of the Museums of Tenerife, ‘behind the glass’ exhibition, the giant squid of more than 10 meters long and 600 kilos of weight, which was found floating in the waters south of the island in March 1994. The squid that is on display at the Mu-

seum of Nature and Man is a replica of the specimen which is preserved in the collection of Marine Biology, and was displayed to the public at the temporary exhibition ‘The fabled Museum’, between 18 March and 31 May 2011. The giant squid is a large cephalopod (up to 20 m in length and one-ton) that lives in the deep waters of all oceans and is the favorite food of the great whales. The section ‘Behind the glass’ comes with the idea of recovering from obscu-

rity those forgotten pieces that, at the time, were selected to form part of the book’ Behind the glass: A view of the Council of Tenerife museums’. It was a work which included a selection of 53 objects, specimens or concepts, by the then directors of the Cabildo museum. The selection criteria were many and varied, from simple aspects such as aesthetic appreciation to its symbolic meaning, its condition became part of the museum’s collection of oddities.

according to police estimates, between 100,000 and 110,000 people demonstrated in the streets of the Basque city of Bilbao last Saturday in the wake of arrests of ETA members. The demonstration was launched after a judge ruled a previous march illegal. All of this came in the context of a police operation during the week which saw eight arrested, including lawyers, with supposed links to ETA. Those arrested were said to be in contact with the around 600 ETA members in Spain’s jails. ETA announced a permanent ceasefire two years ago, putting an end to its 45 year violent campaign which cost over 800 lives and was criticized by many political parties.

The number of registered jobless in Spain fell by 2.24 percent in December, adding to evidence of a gradual economic recovery though seasonal factors played a role in what was the biggest drop ever for the month. The jobless total fell by 107,570 people, leaving 4.7 million people out of work, Labour Ministry figures showed. It was also the best December since 2001 for numbers of newly employed workers registering for social security contributions, Tomas Burgos, Social Security Secretary, told reporters. “(This) is not a coincidence, but rather reflects a series of circumstances which inspire confidence.” The French data protection authority has fined Google 150,000 euro (£125,000) -- the maximum penalty in its armoury -- over failings in the company’s privacy policy. The Commission Nationale de L’Information et des Libertés (CNIL) imposed the penalty because Google’s new privacy policy, implemented in March 2012, does not comply with the French Data Protection Act. The high penalty is justified “by the number and the seriousness of the breaches stated in the case.” Google updated its privacy policy in an attempt to simplify the process and make it easier to understand. Instead of having separate privacy policies for each of Google’s 60 products (Gmail, Google+, Google Docs, Picasa, YouTube etc) the search giant created one policy to rule all others. It hasn’t been a popular move in Europe, with the Dutch, Spanish and now French data protection authorities taking action through fines. Germany, the UK and Italy are all considering taking action as well. about 9,000 companies from 165 countries will participate in the International Tourism Fair of Spain, FITUR 2014, scheduled to start onJanuary 22, according to organizers. The meeting will also host the VII Forum Tourism Leadership of Exeltur, Alliance for Tourism Excellence and the IberoAmerican Conference of Ministers of Tourism and Entrepreneurs, CIMET. FITUR 2014 is the first event of the year for the tourism industry and comes at a time when Spain records a five percent growth in tourist arrivals from all over the world. Until September 2013, the Barometer of the World Tourism Organization reported 845 million more tourists than in the same period of 2012, while Spain received until last November 57.6 million visitors, according to the survey Frontur. Prostitutes in ibiza have formed a sex workers’ co-operative to pay taxes and gain social security benefits - the first such group legally registered in Spain. Eleven women have registered with local authorities as working members of the Sealeer Co-operative providing sexual services, said their spokesperson, Maria Jose Lopez. “We are pioneers. We are the first co-operative in Spain that can give legal cover to the girls.” The 11 active sex workers who registered in November are women in their 20s and 30s from Spain, Italy and “the East”, she said, declining to elaborate. Like any workers’ co-operative, Sealeer members declare their income and pay taxes, which entitles them to public healthcare, a pension and other benefits. The group is applying to register 40 more women as members. Prostitution is neither illegal nor regulated nationwide in Spain but the government in November unveiled a new civil security bill that would fine people for picking up prostitutes near schools.

The Treasure of Loch Arkaig, sometimes known as the Jacobite Gold, was provided by Spain to finance the Jacobite rising in Scotland in 1745, and is rumoured to be hidden at Loch Arkaig in Lochaber. In 1745, Bonnie Prince

Charlie arrived in Scotland from France and claimed the thrones of Scotland, England and Ireland, in the name of his father James Stuart. Charles venture was supported by Louis XV of France with financial support supplied by both Spain and the Pope. Spain pledged some 400,000 livres per month for the Jacobite cause. The first instalment was dispatched in 1745. The French sloop Hazard landed its monies on the west coast of Scotland - but the riches were captured by Clan Mackay, loyalists to King George II. In April 1746, the ships Mars and Bellona arrived in Scotland – with 1,200,000 livres from Spain. However the Jacobite defeat at the Battle of Culloden saw the ships leave - unloading only the Spanish money at

The piece of silver coin found on the beach at Blackpool said to be a Spanish Colonial Cob - depicting flares on the cross, was washed up on to the beach after storms and tidal surges. The Spanish Colonial Cob was a currency used in Spain between 1572 and 1773. The coin found in Blackpool and said to be from a Shipwreck - Spanish or European - dates from the 14th-15th Century. Could the Blackpool coin be part of the missing Jacobite gold, disturbed from its resting place by the huge storms, and if so, could we see the rest of the fortune be washed up soon?

about what they were buying. Under the new rules, labels must tell shoppers if the product came from a pig that was 100 percent iberico or of a lesser percentage, depending solely on verified breeding records. The number of categories of jamon iberico was reduced from four to three: “bellota (acorn)” for a pig fattened on acorns in open fields; “cebo de campo” (field feed) for a pig fattened in open fields on natural grazing and fodder; and “cebo (feed)” for a pig raised in a feeding pen. Cured ham made from Iberian black pigs can cost over 100 euros ($130) per kilo and as much as 4,000 euros for a whole leg of ham that has

been slowly cured for over seven years. The best pigs are fed exclusively on acorns over the winter, a diet that gives the fat a unique, sweet flavour. Due to Spain’s economic downturn farmers reduced their herds of iberico race pigs from four million three years ago to just two and a half million in 2013. The new reform introduces a colour-coded system for labels: black for 100-percent iberico pigs raised on acorns; red for mixed race iberico pigs fattened on acorns; green for those raised in the open on other feeds; and white for those fattened in a feeding pen.

422 arrested in

employment Scam

l

ast Tuesday, the government announced that spanish police have arrested 422 people as they shut down a vast fake employment scam that has cost the state at least 2.6 million euros. Police arrested suspects in some 30 towns and cities across spain, which has an unemployment rate of 26 percent. The gang boss, who was not named, but lived in the southern spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera, worked with accomplices within the social security services.

The nationwide criminal network sold fake work

contracts, which let people apply for unemployment benefits, foreign resident permits, and, for inmates, open prison status. The Interior Ministry said: “Up to now, 422 people have been detained including beneficiaries of the contracts, members of the criminal network and the leader,” The network created up to 10 fake companies run mostly by drug addicts with criminal records who were paid for their roles. People who bought the fake contracts were told to pay social security contributions to the gang leader, but that money never reached the government, the ministry said. The value of the unemployment benefits and other losses to the state amounted to well over 2.6 million euros, it said.

embroiled in among several other issues, has changed public opinion The monarch, widely respected for guiding Spain to democracy after General Francisco Franco’s death in 1975, has plunged in the polls as royal scandals accumulate and his own health comes increasingly under

question. “There is no shortage of problems for the Spanish monarchy, they have reason to be worried,” said Mr Antonio Torres del Moral, a law lecturer at Spain’s Uned university. “Surely the day that the King abdicates is close.”

Wild Horses Return To Spain

i

t’s been more than two thousand years since these majestic beasts roamed wild and grazed there but two-dozen endangered horses have been brought to an unfenced area of western spain that’s believed to have once been native territory for them. For the first time in two millennia, wild horses are once again galloping free in western Spain, countering what happened when the Romans moved there and domesticated the animals. The endangered Retuerta is one of the oldest horse breeds in Europe and most closely resembles the race of ancient Iberian horses that populated this region be-

fore being domesticated. Four-dozen of these beautiful animals have been released into the wild in western Spain over the past two years as part of a project by Rewilding Europe, a nonprofit group that seeks to turn the loss of rural farming life into an opportunity to boost biodiversity. Retuertas are nearly extinct, with only about 150 remaining in Doñana National Park in southern Spain. Living in a single cluster there, the entire species could be wiped out by any potential disease or calamity. So wildlife experts arranged to have two batches of two-dozen Retuertas each brought to the Campanarios de Azaba Biological Reserve, Diego Benito, a forestry en-

gineer who lives and works at the reserve said: “Our idea is to just let them manage the ecosystem themselves. It’s a wild horse. So it’s in its DNA to roam free in the wild, of course it is endangered — close to extinction — and we’re conservationists, so if one of them gets ill, we could call the veterinarian. That’s not the idea in the future — we’ll treat them like wild horses. But for now they could use a little care.” This is one of a half-dozen efforts sponsored by Rewilding Europe across the continent. Others include the rewilding of European bison, red deer, beavers, brown bears and white-tailed eagles in Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia and elsewhere.

Spain is particularly suited to rewilding. The last Ice Age drove many native European species southward, and Spain retains high biodiversity with low human population density. Benigno Varillas, president of Rewilding Spain says: “In the last 40 years, the bush has increased by more than 4 million hectares. That’s nearly 10 percent of the country converted to bushland, because we lost the human population — they went to the city, to control the bush, you need big animals — herbivores — to trample and graze. People have taken their horses and cows away. So this reintroduction [of wild horses] is very important.”

76-year-old man has died in northern spain, where an outbreak of the h1N1 virus, better known as swine flu has left over 40 people in hospital, officials said last Tuesday. Another 43 people who have tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus are receiving treatment in hospitals in Aragon, including 18 who are in intensive care The victim died at a hospital in Zaragoza in the region of Aragon where he was being treated for the H1N1 virus, , a regional government spokeswoman said the man had been suffering from other unspecified diseases. The World Health Organisation declared the swine flu pandemic over in August 2010, more than a year after the H1N1 virus that emerged from Mexico sparked panic and killed thousands of people around the world. All of those who are infected with the virus had not received flu shots and they all suffered from chronic disease that had already weakened, regional health minister Ricardo Olivan told reporters.

government official has resigned over a premature tweet and press release announcing a string of sensitive arrests linked to the basque separatist group ETa before the raids actually took place. alberto Gimeno has quit as the interior ministry’s head of communications, a government statement said: “The

error committed in his department when a press statement and a tweet announcing the detention of

various ETA members were released before the antiterrorist operation started. Interior Minister Jose Fernandez Diaz has accepted the resignation.” Minutes after the initial announcement

was made on the ministry’s Twitter message

feed and in a press statement emailed to journalists, the ministry sent out a hasty message cancelling the statement. Shortly afterwards the police did arrest eight members of a group supporting prisoners

from the armed Basque separatist group. The multiple raids in northern Spain were the latest in a series of blows against ETA, who are blamed for the deaths of 829 people in a four-decade campaign of shootings and bombings for an independent Basque homeland in northern Spain and southwestern France. In last Friday’s statement, the minister praised Gimeno’s “professionalism, loyalty and sense of duty”.

northern Lights visible in uk s

TarGaZErs across the uK were able to get a clear view of the Northern lights last weekend, as a solar storm blazed above the country. Saturdays predicted display was not as strong as expected, but scientists said there was an 85% chance of activity on Sunday night They can usually only be seen in the world’s northernmost countries but Scientists had said the Northern Lights, officially called Aurora Borealis, would be visible across much of Britain due to a mass ejection of particles from the sun which has seen the lights move a lot further south than usual. The Northern Lights occur when solar particles cross into the Earth’s atmosphere and let out burning gases that

produce different coloured lights. These are made up of chemicals including oxygen, which produces green and yellow and nitrogen, which produces blue. The display was not as strong as expected, although scientists say they did come as far south as the M4 corridor, and the wispy green lights were pictured in the skies above north Wales. They were even seen in some built-up areas, including London, although Scotland had the best chance of catching a glimpse. Experts say the best time to see them is between midnight and 3am, and you are more likely to see them away from urban areas and in a spot with good views of the horizon in the north.

SCienCe proveS CatS “are JerKS”

E

veryone knows man’s best friend is the dog, but there are plenty of cat lovers out there, including me, i’ve always had cats and only recently experienced the joy of having my very own faithful hound...well 3 actually, but a new scientific study has confirmed what all us owners of cute, soft, lovable bundles of feline fur, had feared all along, most cats are gits.

Its common knowledge that cats are selfishly indifferent to your wellbeing, and in their minds you are their pets, not the other way around and a recent study discovered that cats can recognize their owner’s voice, but that doesn’t mean they will respond to them. The researchers observed 20 domesticated cats in their homes for eight months, 50 to 70% of the cats acknowledged the sound of the owner’s voice by moving their head or perking up their ears. However, only 10 percent actually responded to the call, by meowing or moving their tails. Your cat definitely hears you calling her name, and can even recognize your voice against a stranger’s, but the truth of the matter is she doesn’t care what you want.

This is because cats have not evolved to become domesticated enough to obey human’s orders. The study suggested that the reason for this is because cats were historically loners who essentially “domesticated themselves.” Also, some cats actually hate the only thing they’re good for: Cuddling. When researching whether cats live better in homes with other cats or in solitary living situations, scientists discovered that petting may stress out some felines, cats who live in a home with other cats are less stressed because it’s easier for them to avoid

being petted by owner. Just face it, if Fluffy avoids physical affection, it’s not her, it’s you. You won’t want to hear this either but just because a cat rubs against you doesn’t mean it likes you, all it’s really saying is that it now owns you. It isn’t making physical contact because it’s trying to say it loves you, but because it is trying to make you its property by putting its scent on you. Cats have an extraordinary sense of smell and they know that each cat has his or her own scent. When a cat rubs

o

n January 24th 1935, canned beer made its debut. in partnership with the american Can Company, the Gottfried Krueger brewing Company delivered 2,000 cans of Krueger’s Finest beer and Krueger’s Cream ale to faithful Krueger drinkers in richmond, Virginia. Ninety-one percent of the drinkers approved of the canned beer, driving Krueger to give the green light to further production. By the late 19th century, cans were instrumental in the mass distribution of foodstuffs, but it wasn’t until 1909 that the American Can Company made its first, unsuccessful attempt to can beer. the American Can Company would then have to wait for the end of Prohibition in the United States before it tried again. Finally in 1933, after two years of research, American Can developed a can that was pressurized and had a special coating to prevent the fizzy beer from chemically reacting with the tin.

The concept was a hard sell, but Krueger’s overcame its initial reservations and became the first brewer to sell canned beer in the United States. The response was overwhelming. Within three months, over 80 percent of distributors were handling Krueger’s canned beer. Competitors soon followed suit, and by the end of 1935, over 200 million cans had been produced and sold. The purchase of cans, unlike bottles, did not require the consumer to pay a deposit. Cans were also easier to stack, more durable and took less time to chill. As a result, their popularity continued to grow throughout the 1930s, and then exploded during World War II, when U.S. brewers shipped millions of cans of beer to soldiers overseas.. Today, canned beer accounts for approximately half of the $20 billion U.S. beer industry. Not all of this comes from the big national brewers: Recently, there has been renewed interest in canning from microbrewers and high-end beersellers, who are realizing that cans guarantee purity and taste by preventing light damage and oxidation.

against you, it’s informing other cats that you are its territory A cat’s favorite ways to “kiss” is through a distant gaze you probably don’t even know she’s giving. Your cat sends you a welcoming greeting by slowly staring and blinking at you. This slow cat blink, or “kitty kiss,” is used by cats to inform whomever it’s looking at that they actually like them I’m starting to tread dangerously now with cat lovers, but don’t blame me, blame science...If you die alone with your cat, it won’t hesitate to eat you. When people who live alone with their pets die unexpectedly, their bodies are sometimes left in the house for several days. In cases where these people owned dogs, their pets would usually go several days without resorting to eating the owner’s body. However, a cat would only wait a day or two. The phenomenon is called “postmortem predation.”

hunting yourself. As if that wasn’t enough, cats also use purring to control you. Your cat knows exactly what he’s doing when he makes that grating sound of a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry. He’s manipulating you. Research has shown that the particular cry a cat makes is very similar to human infant cries. The theory is that cats dramatize and exaggerate their cries in order to get something from their owner, usually, food. Your cat cleans herself all the time because she thinks you stink, licking themselves does provide a calming effect for the cat, but more importantly, after being handled, cats lick themselves to smooth their fur and get rid of the “human” smell. So there it is, of course cat owners who love their furry felines will still practise self-denial and say exactly what I’m about to say...my cat is different.

Cats are the only known mammals who do not have taste receptors to taste sweetness, which could be part of why it’s such a vicious killer. Domestic cats kill as many as 3.7 billion birds and 20.7 billion smaller animals, including mice, voles and chipmunks each year. Sometimes cats kill for fun, but other times, they kill to catch you presents, in the form of shredded little animals as a form of tribute to their dominant master, sometimes it’s also a cat trying to remind you just how bad you are at

The Best Insults In History

i

love a well-timed cutting remark, it’s far more satisfying and effective in silencing a critic than a profanity, be it aimed at a heckler during a performance or just someone proving to be an annoyance during a regular day. Here are some famous classic put-downs from some of the masters.

Muchl o v e d British Prime Minister Winston

Churchill was famous for his quick wit and sharp tongue and had an ongoing verbal duel with Lady Astor. The conservative dame was forever chastising Churchill for his cigars and alcohol habits and Churchill was not one to take the insults lying down. Of their famous squabbles, the most memorable is when Astor commented, “If you were my husband, I’d poison your tea.” Churchill’s riposte? “Madame, if you were my wife, I ’ d drink it.”

S e l f deprecating wit was a useful tool for

Abraham Lincoln, once, during a debate, the popular but not so attractive Abraham Lincoln was accused of being two-faced. His reply; “If I had two faces, do you think I’d be wearing this one?” Yankee batsman Babe Ruth was having such a great run In the 1920s, he was $80,000 salary. But in the early 1930s, when the financial crisis hit, Yankees officials asked Ruth to slash his pay by $5000—a request Ruth declined. At a later press conference an intrepid reporter commented that Ruth had a higher salary than current President Hoover and received a cutting remark: “Maybe so,” Ruth retaliated, “but I had a better year than he did.” Gandhi’s belief in non-violence didn’t stretch to his killer tongue, his witty remarks could be lethal. One such incident was when Gandhi travelled to London and a reporter asked him what he thought of Western civilization. Gandhi replied with this scathing remark: “I think it would be a good idea.” Politicians, when unconcerned with being diplomatically correct, fire offthe best insults of all. Such was the case between the 18th century political rivals, John Montagu and John Wilkes. During one of their verbal sparring matches, Montagu spat at Wilkes and said, “Upon my soul, Wilkes, I don’t know whether you’ll die upon the gallows, or of syphilis.” Wilkes retorted, “That will depend, my Lord, on whether I embrace your principles, or your mistress.”

extreme animals

himalayan Jumping spider

W

ith all the recent apocalyptic, end of world, day after tomorrow type weather we’ve been experiencing, i thought i’d look into what could survive should civilisation come to an end in some planet wide armageddon. We all have heard the stories of cockroaches and rats being able to survive just about anything, but no matter how tough those two might be, they are nothing compared to these rock hard critters!

The Devil Worm This species of nematode, only recently discovered in 2011

devil Worm

can survive crippling pressure, lack of oxygen and high temperature. It has been found living up to 2.2 miles below the surface of the Earth and blew away the previous record for multicellular organisms by a full mile. These worms spend their lives in total darkness, drinking 12,000 year old water and eating simple bacteria. The Himalayan Jumping Spider This amazing arachnid is the polar opposite of the devil worm, this spider holds the record for the animal that claims residency at a higher point than any other (4.1 miles above sea level). It’s able to survive long periods without food, freezing temperatures, and a distinct lack of atmospheric pressure. The only sources of nutrition available to the Himlayan jumping spider are the tiny insects that get blown up the

mountain by the high winds. The Immortal Jellyfish These jellyfish have the ability to revert back to their infant stages in adverse conditions, making them effectively immortal. There doesn’t seem to be any limit on the number of times that they are able to revert back to their infancy. Unfortunately, they’re highly vulnerable to predation and disease every time they live out their immature, smaller stages. The Red Flat Bark Beetle This insect, which is native to the northern areas of Alaska and Canada, is able to resist temperatures up to, wait for it, -150 degrees Celsius! It actually produces an antifreeze protein that prevents the crystallization of its blood. Its blood is also fortified with glycerol, which further halts freezing. The Pompeii Worm Aptly named, a s they could have probably survived it, these deep-sea worms live exclusively in thermal vents in the ocean floor. Their tails are in the vents, which achieve temperatures up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Their heads however, poke out of the vents in order for the Pompeii worms to capture prey. This results in half of their bodies experiencing temperatures over 100 degrees lower. It’s thought that their resistance to heat is

due to a coating of specialized bacteria on their bodies, which may provide a large degree of insulation for the worm. The Tardigrade But the winner has to be this thing, the Wolverine (X-Men not crazy badger type thing) of the natural world can survive basically anything, that and the fact that it’s clearly not from this planet! These millimeter long, segmented animals can survive temperatures between just above absolute zero and 300 degrees Fahrenheit are no problem. 1200 times atmospheric pressure? T h e tardigrade just shrugs it off. It doesn’t really care a b o u t dehydration e i t h e r, seeing as it can g o 1 0 y e a r s without wa te r. 1 , 0 0 0 times the lethal dose o f radiation f o r humans is another non- f a c t o r . When testing the true extent of the tardigrade’s resilience, scientists went so far as to send it to outer space in 2007. The result? Most of the tardigrades that went on the mission came back entirely unscathed. Plus they’re kind of weirdly adorable.

The immortal Jellyfish

iving in a country where their native tongue is not the same as yours can cause a few problems, sure many of us try our hardest to learn the local lingo, but you can still be caught out, i once thought a daycare centre was allowing kangaroos to look after the children and there’s a word similar to the word for chicken, that you really don’t want to mix up like i did in my early days over here!

But they were nothing compared to some of these absolute clangers from across the globe, and you should of seen the ones I couldn’t print! When the ADA attempted to expand its successful “Got Milk?” campaign into Mexico, it instead accidentally asked “Are You Lactating?” Oddly enough, Spanish speakers did not feel compelled to buy more milk. For similar reasons, Ford’s Pinto failed to break into the Brazilian market. Brazilians just weren’t lining up at the local Ford dealership to buy a car with a name that translates to “male genitals” in Brazilian slang and the Nova, Chevy or Vauxhall didn’t do well in Spain, who wants that “no va” or “doesn’t go”? And the Mitsubishi Pajero? I’ll let you look that one up! The name of an extremely popular soda, which is bottled in Ghana, means “very good Cola,” however, would you fancy drinking a Pee Cola? In Japan, automakers have marketed the Nissan Moco and the Mazda Laputa. Unfor tunately, these product brand names would never export well to Spanish-speaking countries where “moco” means booger and “laputa” sounds like a slang word for

prostitute. Lumia. Nokia’s new smartphone also translates in Spanish slang to prostitute, which is unfortunate, but at least the cell phone giant is in good company. The name of international car manufacturer Peugeot translates in southern China to Biao zhi, which means the same thing. Barf. In Iran, where this detergent is manufactured, that word means “snow.” Fart Bar. In Polish, where this candy bar is made, the name translates to “lucky bar.” Aass Fatol. The Norwegians may think they’re just drinking “draught beer,” but the label will almost definitely make Englishspeaking visitors giggle. Irish Mist, a golden whiskey liqueur produced in Dublin, Ireland. While the beverage has a lovely sounding name in English, when the C & C Group tried to launch it in Germany, they were mystified as to why sales weren’t going too well. “Mist,” you see, is the German word for “manure.”

meant in German–a potentially lucrative market for the car–they wisely changed the name to the “Silver Shadow.” U.S. computer company Wang Laboratories tried to use its “Wang Cares” slogan in the U.K. in the 1980s. But the suggestion didn’t function well with the firm’s local British branches. It didn’t catch on. Proctor and Gamble understood the benefits of a single global brand nearly 70 years ago when it considered launching a new soap named “Dreck” in the United States. According to the book New Products Management by Charles Crawford, shortly before the company introduced the soap to U.S. consumers, it discovered “Dreck” sounded like German and Yiddish words for dirt, garbage, body waste and a four-letter expletive that cannot be published here. Fortunately, because Proctor and Gamble did its homework, it had time to change the detergent name to “Dreft” and has since sold it successfully in the U.S. and many other countries. In sharp contrast with the brands named above, Kodak exemplifies the benefits of linguistic research in brand name development. According to the book Blunders in International Business by David A. Ricks, a team chose the name Kodak after it determined that

the word had no negative meanings or connotations in the countries targeted. In fact, the name had no meaning at all, but it was easy to pronounce in every country tested. KFC’s signature phrase, “finger-lickin’ good,” doesn’t quite work in China. Apparently, some though the fast food

Ko-ka-ko-la was already taken by people who “bite the wax tadpole” or “Female Horse Stuffed with Wax”, depending on the dialect. Coke then researched 40,000 characters to find a phonetic equivalent “kokoukole”, translating into “Happiness in the Mouth.” The official translation of “fresca” in Spanish is fresh (makes sense), but in Mexico the term is also slang for lesbian. Luckily for Coca-Cola, sales weren’t greatly affected. Schweppes ran an ad campaign in Italy encouraging people to try their “toilet water.” At least they were being honest. When Parker Pen marketed a ball-point pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to have read, “It won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” The company thought that the word “embarazar” (to impregnate) meant to embarrass, so the ad read: “It won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.” Scandinavian vacuum

manufacturer Electrolux used the following in an American campaign: “Nothing Sucks like an Electrolux.” When Gerber started selling baby food in Africa, they used the same packaging as in the US, with the smiling baby on the label. Later they learned that in Africa, companies routinely put pictures on the labels of what’s inside, since many people can’t read. When American Airlines wanted to advertise its new leather first class seats in the Mexican market, it translated its “Fly In Leather” campaign literally, which meant “Fly Naked” (vuela en cuero.) in Spanish. An American T-shirt maker in Miami

iS tHe J’Ba fofi reaL?

a

rachnophobics should maybe consider putting this paper down and making a calming cup of tea before continuing to read this. Several Cryptozoologists are investigating the possibility that the existence of the humongous arachnid species nicknamed “J’ba Fofi” (literally “giant spider”) by natives of the Congo could actually be real!

Nothing has been officially verified but if someone out there proves this thing actually exists, arachnophobia may become even more prolific! Some cryptozoologists maintain that the J’ba Fofi is a species of tarantula native to equatorial Africa – one which may have been common to the area in the past but is nearing extinction due to deforestation. Their theories are supported by accounts by local tribes,

who describe the spider as brown and purple in color, with legs up to five feet long. They are said to be extremely aggressive, with venom powerful enough to bring down medium-sized mammals – so even though sightings are rare, natives avoid them at all costs. According to Cryptid Wiki, one of the first documented tales of the creature dates back to 1938, when a British couple were traveling through the Congo and saw

what they thought was a cat or a monkey... until they realized it had eight legs. Famous naturalist and cryptozoologist, William J. Gibbons said: “On this third expedition to Equatorial Africa, I took the opportunity to inquire if the pygmies knew of such a giant spider, and indeed they did! They speak of the Jba Fofi, which is a “giant” or “great spider.” They described a spider that is generally brown in color

with a purple abdomen. They grow to quite an enormous size with a leg span of at least five feet. The giant arachnids weave together a lair made of leaves similar in shape to a traditional pygmy hut, and spin a circular web (said to be very strong) between two trees with a strand stretched across a game trail.” “These giant grounddwelling spiders prey on the

diminutive forest antelope, birds, and other small game, and are said to be extremely dangerous, not to mention highly venomous,” Gibbons states. “The spiders are said to lay white, peanut-sized eggs in a cluster, and the pygmies give them a wide birth when encountered, but have killed them in the past. The giant spiders were once very common but are now a rare sight.” Had that tea yet?

new Shows to Be excited about this Year

a

couple of weeks ago i listed some of the big releases to look forward to this year, but TV has never been more exciting than it is right now. it has become the norm for a-list actors and directors to swap the big screen for a chance to really get their teeth into a character on the goggle box, spacey, bacon, Close, scorsese, spielberg, they all there and many more besides.

Of course many firm favourites are back to get us reaching for Sky+ but you know what you like and if you’re missing out, tough, you should have paid more attention on here! So, here’s a few of the brand new shows for 2014 that have all the ingredients to become your n e w f a v e show!

“Wayward Pines” The latest in a new trend of short run series that can run straight-through without having to go on hiatus, and have a brief enough production schedules so that they can capture big names who can then spend the rest of the year on movies, from director M Night Shyamalan and starring Matt Dillon this is the story of A Secret Service agent who heads to the mysterious Wayward Pines, Indiana to find t w o missing federa l

agents, only to find that something is very, very wrong with the picturesque town. “Believe” An ex-con is asked to protect a young girl with mysterious powers, who’s being sought by at least one sinister organization. Produced by hit machine and new Star Wars helmer JJ Abrams and co-created by the genius behind Gravity, this shows credentials speak for themselves. “Silicon Valley” This Black comedy from the people behind Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill mines the virtually untouched era of the beginning of the computer age. About a group of tech nerds who turn down offer from corporate businesses trying to buy their technology to go it alone. “The Strain” Monster Maestro Guillermo del Toro (“Pacific

Rim”, “Hellboy”, “Pans Labyrinth” ) reinvents vampire lore with this miniseries based on his best selling trilogy of novels. Walking Dead fans will love it. “Penny Dreadful” Thanks to low budget big scares movies like “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious”, horror is big business once more, this new series takes it back to the beginning- A number of horror’s most famous creations, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and Dracula, cross paths in Victorian London. With people like “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes and A-listers like Josh Hartnett, Eva Green and Billie Piper, It’ll be hard to get this wrong. “The Leftovers” A drama focusing on those in a suburban community left behind after The Rapture summons most of humanity up to heaven (or did it?...) From “Lost” mastermind Damon Lindelof to television, starring Liv Tyler and Christopher Eccleston, this adapts the 2011 novel by Tom Perotta, whose books previously made it to the big screen to great success as “Election” and “Little Children.” How can this be bad? “Tooken” A woman who escapes from a doomsday cult tries to start over in New York City. Sounds heavy but this is actually an NBC sitcom from 30 Rock’s Tina Fey. “Babylon” An American PR expert is hired to help improve the image of the London police force. Is there nothing this man can’t do?Having conquered the movies and the Olympics, “Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar-winner Danny Boyle is heading to the smallscreen. This is a U.K. comedy-drama for Channel 4. “The Knick” A drama all about the lives of the doctors and nurses at New York’s Knickerbocker Hospital in the early 20th century. Steven Soderbergh may have retired from the movies, but he’s still behind the camera, directing Clive Owen in all 10 episodes of this period medical drama. “True Detective” Two cops try to track down a serial killer in Louisiana, a case that spans decades and leads both of them to darker places than they ever could have imagined. Starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the lead roles, this is an Anthology series, like “American Horror Story”: any second season will have a different director and cast of characters, the trailers look great for this. So, better start making yourself comfortable, nights in front of the Telly have never seemed so appealing!

eing the son of a second-hand bookshop owner, this story brought a smile to my face!

A struggling bookshop owner in Saltaire, West Yorkshire who posted his poor profits on Facebook has encountered a dramatic increase in sales. David Ford’s usual daily takings at his second-hand store were usually in the range of £14 - one slow day saw him only sell two books: a French dictionary and a children’s book about ponies, earning him only £7.50 for a whole days work. David posted the terrible sales figures on the social-networking site Facebook, which, to his amazement increased his business 4000 per cent earning him £300 in sales in a single day.

Simon CoWeLL’S BrainWave

i

don’t begrudge anybody success and that includes simon Cowell. There is no doubt that he is a very clever man and his format of talent shows works well all over the world. i personally don’t enjoy them and think that the shows are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. a couple of years off the box might give some new talent a chance to nurture itself for a new series. Just recently, according to the British press, he has had a brainwave or as he called it “a light bulb moment”. What was this earth shattering idea. I will tell you.

He thinks that the voting should be free. Pardon me, but isn’t that how it used to be on Opportunity Knocks, New Faces and Search for a star. Didn’t New Faces also have a panel where one of them was a bit of a bad guy ….. Tony Hatch and later

Nina Mishkof. I wonder what great new old idea he will have next. Meanwhile I have to say that the glitz and glamour of his show’s finals is always superb and at least they give people a bit of much needed variety on television.

poSH piZZa d id you see the fuss this week in the news when the Mayor of New york used a knife and fork to eat a pizza? The New York press have had a field day with the poor man. They reckon that a proper New Yorker folds a piece of pizza with his hands and stuffs it in his face. Personally, i don’t like handling my food with my fingers unless i am at home but judging by the size of some of the american people i saw when i was on my last holiday there, they just shove anything edible into their faces at any given opportunity.

There are some that feel he should follow the local tradition and eat it with his hands. I think a New Yorker who displays a little etiquette might just be a good thing, however rare!

Here in Tenerife, I always try to stick my finger through the cup handle when I am drinking coffee and I even hold the saucer in my other hand. Some of my Spanish friends laugh at my English table manners but I will drink my coffee and eat my pizza how I see fit and they can all do the same. I suggest that those people who are criticizing the Mayor take a lesson from him and eat like human beings and not animals.

WHAT A LOT OF YACHT YOU’VE GOT

a

new yacht in its design stages is going to cost around 700 million pounds to build. it is to be called “The streets of Monaco” and will be based on just that with roads and go-carts, a helipad, accommodation for 15 guests and a crew of approximately 70 people. It also includes a scaled down replica of the Monaco

royal palace. If it ever sees the light of day, the buyer will be the proud owner of the world’s most expensive yacht, dwarfing the price of the current record holder owned by Roman Abramovich, whose super-yacht, Eclipse, is said to have cost

about 485 million pounds. I think it is a case of more money than sense but it is their money and their sense so let them get on with it! The owner is unlikely to get much peace wherever he docks as sightseers will be flocking to take a look at it.

T

he iconic Volkwagen Camper Van was taken out of production at the end of last year. The ridiculous thing is that it was still selling really well. The reason for the closing of production was because it didn’t comply with

a modern safety standards.

Is this another sign of idiotic rules and regulations? I suspect so. The Camper Van has been made in Brazil for over 34 years and the closure of production will have cost a lot of skilled people their jobs. Modern vehicle have very

little character and I think it is such a shame that this old un-fashion conscious motor has lost that battle of survival. I hope that, when they produce a new vehicle, they don’t do the same to it as they have done to the Mini and the Beetle. Why on earth does everything on the road have to look the same?

friend of mine has labelled himself Mr Grumpy. his facebook page is full of sensible yet funny comments. here are a few from the last week or so!! “Watched an interesting program yesterday evening called Benefits Street and found it most comforting that my taxes are going to those who deserve them and not being squandered”

He is of course being sarcastic! On recent news from the BBC ..... “Proof that the BBC has really lost the plot, and maybe the powers that be will make them pay their way,.. or even shut them down Why ?You may ask. Well they are now going to give weather updates ....for Saturn?

Do you know of anyone in your town, city, village, hamlet who might be even remotely interested in this as far as I can see the only ones who might be are those on another planet .... the BBC” He is priceless ..... more from him next week!

Scale of universe is Calculated

r

emember when we believed that the universe was infinite? an endless sprawling mass of space and star and planets? Well that could soon be proved wrong as an ultraprecise new galaxy map is shedding light on the properties of dark energy, the mysterious force thought to be responsible for the universe’s accelerating expansion. A team of researchers working with the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) has determined the distances to galaxies more than 6 billion light-years away to within 1 percent accuracy — an unprecedented measurement. Scientists working with BOSS mapped the locations of 1.2 million galaxies and found that their new measurements support the idea of the

“cosmological constant” — an idea first proposed by Albert Einstein. This idea suggests that dark energy has remained constant throughout the history of the universe. David Schlegel, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the principal investigator of BOSS, said in a statement: “There are not many things in our daily lives that we know to 1-percent accuracy, I now know the size of the universe better than I know the size of my house. We don’t yet understand what dark energy is, but we can measure its properties.” Harvard University astronomer Daniel Eisenstein said: “Then, we compare those values to what we expect them to be, given our current understanding of the universe. The better our measurements, the more we can learn.” The new results, presented by Schlegel and his colleagues at the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society,

Question 1: On a British Monopoly board, what is the first property you reach after passing “Go”?

Question 2: What hedgerow fruit is traditionally used to produce a red fortified gin?

Question 3: What does the acronym CAMRA stand for? Question 4: What lies between infra-red waves and radio waves in the electro-magnetic spectrum?

Question 5: Which Three West Ham United players were in England’s 1966 World Cup winning team?

Question 6: What two animals led Pinnochio astray as the wooden puppet made his way to school?

Question 7: What was Walt Disney’s first full-length animated movie? Question 8: What plant was originally known as the Love Apple? Question 9: What does “karate” mean in English? Question 10: In 1875, what food did Seventh Day Adventist John Kellogg invent, claiming it would help kurb sex drive?

Question 11: From which region of France does the wine accurately called claret originate?

also provide one of the best-ever determinations of the curvature of space, which appears to be quite “flat,” meaning that its shape can be described well by Euclidean geometry, in which straight lines are parallel and the angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees. Schlegel continued: “One of the reasons we care is that a flat universe has implications for whether the universe is infinite. That means — while we can’t say with certainty that it will never come to an end — it’s likely the universe extends forever in space and will go on forever in time. Our results are consistent with an infinite universe.” So...... it probably is infinite after all then? “Future surveys will be doing more of this, both filling in this map of the universe, [and] the enormous volume of the universe we have yet to map out and doing this with even higher precision,” Schlegel said here today at the AAS meeting.

HoMe AnD gArDening By Linda Barratt

h

uMblE in design and crude in construction the PallET is more vital than ever to local and global commerce. Nearly everything rides into the economy on one be it mail beer paint rice flour etc etc etc. PallETs travel around the world from factory to port to the loading docks of the local shopping centers. Many ending up in a local bone yard to be broken up, rebuilt and used again.

So is it the state of the economy or just a fad of fashion that has led the humble pallet into our homes? Sanded down, repainted, reconfigured, stacked, staggered or chopped down, its uses are limitless. Reused. Recycled. Upcycled or Repurposed pallets... Got the idea yet? With an estimated 2 billion pallets being used every day, and many many more just sitting around, there is no wonder so many are being revealed into projects all around our homes. Folks have come up with some awesome ways to recycle and reuse wooden shipping pallets, and let me tell you it’s pretty well inspiring. But before you all go out in search of your wooden troves let me give you a few tips here:1. As a general rule, ask before you

take pallets that aren’t leaning up against a rubbish bin. If they are piled by the side of a building and you are pawing through them-then you are probably stealing. ASK BEFORE YOU TAKE 2. pallets are typically marked with either MB which means they have been chemically treated or HT which means they have been heat treated. Some pallets are also pressure treated with preservatives. You should where possible try to avoid using MB marked and pressure treated pallets for interior and gardening projects to avoid those nasty chemicals if you can. 3. When breaking down pallets for wood be aware of any dangers to your precious tools. There may be hidden nails within the wood, pebbles or stones that have embedded themselves into the pallet through heavy use. Always cut or smooth with care. 4. Those pesky nails...Understand that they are pallet nails and that they are typically ridged and unthreaded. Engineers designed these nails to STAY PUT....the best way to deal with these nails is to drill through the head of the nail with a sheet metal drill bit. 5. Before you do start any project the pallets or part pieces of, will need to be stored or stacked to restore them to a dry state after giving them a thorough wash down. Those who have access to a high pressure cleaner are well served.

pallets, much more than a very Big tray!

Otherwise just use a garden hose or watering can and scrubbing brush. 6. At least every visible/touchable

surface should be sanded and smoothed down before painting. A simple interior wall paint in any choice of colour works well as this allows the wood to breathe. The opacity is usually just fine after 2 coats provided the pallets were cleaned and prepared well. Why not even try a transparent colour glaze. I couldn’t really recommend waxing as the wood in pallets is very absorbent of the oil in wax and would take quite a costly amount for the right effect. NOT PHASED ....then let your imagination run riot. PALLETS are essentially LEGO for adults. They can be turned into just about anything with minimal effort or skill. At a glance wood pallets are ugly, cheap wood that most people wouldn’t bother using for kindling, let alone make a table out

of one. Oddly, thats really the appeal of them. A stacked collection of pallets with cushions or mattress make a ideal modern lounging area for both indoors and garden. Coffee tables/bedside tables/dining tables.Staircases to bookcases.Flower beds to sofa beds.Wine racks to beer mats.Sandpits/garden swings. Headboards to floorboards Go on have a play...lets face it...spoil it and you’ve still got a bit of kindling.

Growing Potatoes growing food In Tight Spaces in tight Spaces E VEr YEarNEd for or even had a very freshly dug potato?...No?.... Then you are in for a total treat as like tomatoes, the taste and texture of fresh is so very different from those you buy in store. Plus, there are actually several advantages to growing potatoes in containers. it is easier to protect them from the critters that love them ...and you don’t have to worry about weeds. You do however have to be more vigilant about watering-keeping the soil moist, not wet but damp. Just water until the wa-

ter actually starts to flow from the bottom of the container is a very good guide. You don’t even need to go out and buy seed potatoes, you can instead just lay by a couple of store bought potatoes that you can let sprout in a cool dark place. Potatoes can be grown on your balcony providing the pot is large and has good drainage (vital). A no longer needed tall kitchen waste bin makes an ideal planter...just remember to drill drainage holes in the bottom first. High quality potting soil that is fast draining mixed with a slow release fertilizer is best, followed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks as

they grow. Both these projects are a fun introduction if you have kiddies in the home as they are both easy to do and easy for them to appreciate the art of growing. Both herbs and potatoes are fast growers with some of them also producing flowers for them to look out for....But I believe one of the easiest and most fun veggies to grow on the planet for children are radishes. Bright colourful, fast growers that can be grown in small containers...Oh the joy of making radish faces for their very own salad could not be a simpler way to encourage healthy eating.

F

EW ThiNGs are more satisfying than growing your own food. The frustration of being a garden lover living in a teeny-weeny apartment with the smallest of patio or balcony can easily be overcome with a little forethought and imagination.

One of the easiest gardening ideas I have ever come across, is the re-purpose of an old shoe organizer. These are superb for planting a collection of mixed leaf salad and herbs, or an assortment of small flowers and green plants. It takes up very

little space and the canvas ones are ideal for needed water drainage, but the plastic variety can easily be pierced a couple of times at the bottom of each pocket; but do remember to add a few pebbles or preferably a little garden membrane before a mixture of potting compost and sand. This will prevent soil from seeping onto the plant below. Simply hang in a space of your choice, be it off the wall or over your balcony and plant your favorite herbs or small plants into the pouches. With the strong sun and adequate water you’ll have a thriving spread of herbs to flavour your favorite dishes and their heady aroma’s filling your space.

As Mars continues to move through your wellness sector, you may be more productive if you can walk in nature or exercise regularly. Maintaining a balanced diet and routine may work wonders for your energy level and well-being. Relationships get off to a good start with opportunities for collaboration, closing deals, romance, plus a chance to make some new acquaintances. Good connections with others may be important in helping you succeed in business or romance.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

To avoid any uncomfortable misunderstandings, keep the lines of communication open with those you work or spend time with. This week’s lineup encourages harmonious interaction through discussion at all levels, which may then pave the way for progress. You may feel you have the energy to move mountains midweek, but it might be better to pace yourself for the best outcome. Once Mercury moves into Aquarius, you may be drawn to folks who have an alternative bias, and your social life could be perkier, too.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

You may feel like taking a relationship to a new level of commitment, especially if it shows signs of having some staying power. However, as Venus continues to rewind, this isn’t the best time to make a major decision concerning the future of a romance or even a business partnership. Things could still change over the coming weeks, so keep your options open for now. Dating and lighthearted evenings out seem to be your best choices. Give yourself plenty of wiggle room!

t about 7:30 a.m last Thursday, fisherman were surprised to see a small brown dog paddling 2 miles offshore in Tampa bay, her nose rising just above the water. The dog was wearing a collar with the name baby on it and a microchip led vets to a report showing the dog had first been reported missing two years ago and that her owner had died a couple of months ago.

We may never know how long the poor pup, named

Baby was treading water when fishermen rescued her off the St. Petersburg shoreline, Suzy Johnson, one of Baby’s new caretakers, told the Tampa Bay Times: “We’re assuming she fell overboard at night and nobody even knew it,” That morning, Johnson brought Baby back to Demens Landing, where she lives on a boat. Tony Basile, another resident of the area, coaxed Baby out of the boat’s crawlspace and took her in. Baby now whines every time Basile leaves her sight. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to offer Baby a home permanently, but a Florida

couple who heard about her story and had offered to help have now adopted her. ‘Initially, I wanted to just go meet the people that were so kind to rescue her,’ Kathy Klein said. ‘I went and got a dog bed and a blanket and a dog coat because I knew it was going to get cold.’ But as she helped nurse Baby back to health, and trimmed the knots out of her bedraggled fur, Mrs Klein fell in love with the dog. As well as offering Baby a new home, Mrs Klein has also given her a new name - Gracie - because ‘purely by the grace of God did she survive all of this’.

libra 23 September to 23 October

Matters on the home front may demand a lot of attention. However, you could be in creative mode, too, and thinking about projects that can beautify your place and give it a fresh look for the new year. At the same time you may feel very enthusiastic about making a career move that could expand your horizons or bring you a challenge that you’d really relish. When Mercury moves into Aquarius it’s time to get out and about with fun in mind. Give yourself a break!

scorpio 24 October to 21 November

You may be busy planning ahead or mulling over a complex problem, yet the help and advice of a friend or partner could be the best kind of feedback. Whatever you’re considering, don’t rush into anything just yet, especially if it involves money or relationships. Things may change, and you’ll need to make a new set of decisions. Even though you might feel pressured to resolve an issue or make a move, go with the flow and take things as they come. You can do very well with a bit of creative thinking.

sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

If finances are giving you the runaround early on, it might help to stop and find some breathing space. This is one week when a bit of planning or an opportunity to budget for the coming weeks or months might ease anxiety and help you feel in control. However, a racy aspect midweek could encourage you to splurge regardless of the consequences, especially if you’re spending money on having a good time. A little forethought now could save you some angst later.

Capricorn 22 december to 19 January

You might have a lot to think about, discuss, and plan for, but you’ll be in your element nevertheless. With Venus still in its retrograde phase, you may not be able to count on other people as much as you’d hoped. It helps to give others as much leeway as possible and not rely on their input too much. The more you can do for yourself, the less hassle you will experience over the days ahead. You’ll need to be patient in romance, too.

Comfort food pudding SCHooL eXtended!

friend of mine in England shared this recipe with me a couple of weeks ago and said that i just had to try it.

Firstly, just looking at the picture of this recipe made me want to jump into the warm comfort oozing from this moist and citrusy yellow cake. It will take about 35 minutes to cook and 15 minutes to

prep, but your first taste will make it worth the wait. This gets five stars from me with this scrumptious warm dessert that is perfect for the cold winter nights that we are having.

The name really says it all. This comes out

of the oven so warm and oozing with pud-

ding. sort of like a molten lava cake.

Hot Lemon pudding CaKe

ingredients: For The Cake

175g plain flour 175g Margarine 175g sugar 3 eggs

Tenerife Weekly - 17th January 2014 - 23rd January 2014

1 flat teaspoon baking 180ml fresh lemon juice powder 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest

Method:

Grease a medium sized cake tin (round or small) and set the oven to 170°C. Make the lemon curd filling. In a 2 litre saucepan, combine lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, eggs and butter. Cook over a medium-low heat until thick enough to hold marks from whisk, and the first few bubbles appear on surface, about 6 minutes. When it is ready pour it into the greased tin and evenly spread across the bottom of it. Next place all the cake ingredients into a mixing bowl, and beat them together with an electric mixer for about 3 min-

175g sugar 3 eggs 125g unsalted butter, cubed

utes until light and fluffy. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little bit of milk to thin it out. If you wish for a little more lemon flavour add some grated zest into the cake mix just before you finish beating. Pour the cake mix over the lemon mixture and then place it in the oven, reducing the temperature to 160°C straight away. Allow about 30 to 35 minutes for it to bake through. However keep checking that the top doesn’t become too brown. Once it’s cooked through serve with lashings of rich custard. Simply luscious.

CES 2014 T

oyota’s three new advanced concept cars made their North American debut at the “2014 International CES” (Consumer Electronics Show) held in Las Vegas, USA. The next generation of fuel cell powered cars “TOYOTA FCV CONCEPT”, the “TOYOTA FV2”, which has created a new relationship between people and cars and the ultra compact EV “TOYOTA i-ROAD” wow the crowds. Hydrogen is no longer an impossible

dream. Toyota has announced the introduction of FCVs (Fuel Cell Vehicles) on the North American market in 2015. FCVs are powered by fuel cells, which generate electricity from hydrogen, which is not only environmentally friendly and highly energy-efficient, but can also be produced using a variety of readily available raw materials. Toyota has always been quick to take up the challenge of new technology, and seek to make this available to as many people as possible. This is what motivates their technological development work. A cumulative total of over 5 million hybrid cars have been sold worldwide, a result of their dedication

Skycycle plans unveiled

to new technology. People thought these cars were still somewhere in the distant future, but they are here right now! The Toyota booth displayed these 3 unique concept cars, and attained a totally new presence at CES, a venue where the latest advanced technologies compete The i-ROAD is An ultra-compact electric vehicle with only three wheels. A new breed of vehicle from Toyota built using the latest technologies, offering exhilarating, compact mobility for short-distance city driving. Its small footprint results in impressive manoeuvrability, navigating narrow streets quickly and smoothly. These features mean

the i-ROAD will contribute to decreased congestion and need for parking, helping maintain clean communities that produce fewer greenhouse gases. The i-ROAD will participate in urban transport trials from 2014 in Toyota City, Japan and in Grenoble, France. The car of the future will be far more than a simple machine. Equipping vehicles with the latest in IT technology will allow for a more natural relationship between people and their cars. The FV2 concept car is one step toward giving shape to this idea. Designed around “Intuitive Connections,” you control the FV2 with your body’s motions, and the vehicle reacts to your emotions as well.

eeing cyclists in London weaving in and out of rush hour traffic inhaling exhaust fumes may soon be a thing of the past. Cycling enthusiast and one of the world’s most prominent architects Sir Norman Foster, who designed St Mary Axe, known as ‘The Gherkin’, and the new Wembley Stadium, has unveiled plans for a network of cycle pathways high above the streets of London.

The SkyCycle is a 135-mile network of roads that would be constructed above existing suburban rail lines to create new cycle routes throughout the capital, the three-storey high routes would be accessed via ramps at more than 200 points. Each of the 10 proposed routes can accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour and will improve journey times by up to 29 minutes, the developers added. They also claim the scheme, which would be built over 20 years, providing capacity at a much lower cost than building new roads and tunnels. The first phase is a four mile stretch from east London to Liverpool Street Station would cost an estimated £220m. Road safety in London recently came to the fore after six cyclists were killed on the capital’s roads in the space of under two weeks in November.

a

powerful and moving featurelength drama-documentary telling the story of five major storms that battered the uK in 2012. Told by the people who survived them, it combines archive footage with dramatic reconstruction and satellite images, to piece together the life of the storms, how they were formed, what made them unique and the impact they had on our islands. Each of the storms in the programme carries a deadly threat, from hurricane force winds to ferocious

seas, intense rainfall, Arctic temperatures and flash flooding. Intimate interviews with those who lived through the storms and those who lost loved ones reveal how the weather took on a volatile ‘personality’ in 2012, which made it such an erratic and deadly year. The UK’s position on our planet forms the battleground for cold and warm weather fronts to collide producing storms. No wonder the weather is a very British obsession. And it is a force that shouldn’t be underestimated.

very different cars - Justin and Anita find out. Anita and Justin begin their journeys in Sochi, the Black Sea resort home to the 2014 Winter Olympics – the most expensive games ever. Full of futuristic architecture, this is new Russia’s glittering showcase to the world, but just round the corner from the glitzy stadiums is Joseph Stalin’s old dacha, a reminder that in Russia the old and the new are often very close. Anita is out to discover ‘new’ Russia. She travels north and west from Sochi in a Kombat, a Russian-built luxury armoured plated bling machine – her oligarch tank. She enters a thriving world of westernised entrepreneurs, the mega-rich and rebellious youth, people who are at the forefront of shaping a new and vibrant Russia.

Schumacher’s ennis-Hill team to show is pregnant J their support EssiCa Ennis-hill says her year has been “turned upside down” as she confirms she will not make it to the Commonwealth Games. The olympian has revealed she is expecting her first child and will miss the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 27-year-old heptathlete said the news was “very unexpected” but exciting for her and her husband, Andy Hill, who she married in May. The gold medal-winner intends to defend her title at the Rio Olympics, she said: “My plans for 2014 have been completely turned upside down,

W

hilE the F1 legend still lied in an induced coma in switzerland, tomorrow his favourite football club intends to show the racing driver’s family that the club are behind him and his recovery. Michael Schumacher’s favourite football club, FC Cologne, will show their support for the seven-time F1 world champion this weekend with the unveiling of a huge banner. Schumacher is a huge football fan and regularly took part in charity matches during his F1 career. It’s been over two weeks since

but having had a couple of weeks to think about things from a career point of view I am 100% set on returning to full time athletics once our baby is born and go for a second gold medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016 - that challenge really excites me. But in the short term I will make our baby a priority and enjoy the whole experience as much as possible. I am sorry I won’t be in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, but know it will be an amazing occasion. I will be at home awaiting the arrival of a little Ennis-Hill.” After winning her gold medal in the London Olympics in 2012, Sheffield-born Ennis-Hill was due to be one of the favourites in Glasgow this year.

he was put into an induced coma following a head injury sustained in a skiing accident and ahead of a friendly against FC Schalke 04 tomorrow (Saturday), the German club - of which Schumacher is a member - has announced it will present a huge banner in honour of their countryman. There has been no further update on the German’s condition this week, which is still critical but stable, apparently a small part of Schumacher’s skull has been removed in a bid to relieve pressure on his brain. Swiss neurosurgeon Frédéric Rossi said last Monday that the list of dangers from such a procedure “is long, ranging from swelling to bleeding to the accidental opening of the brain’s outer membrane”.

Xavi- “Legend of Barcelona”

b

arCEloNa president sandro rosell says the club’s midfield maestro Xavi is the inventor of the Tiki Taka philosophy employed so successfully by the blaugrana and spain. The midfielder, who is 34 later this month, admitted recently that he is unsure whether he will be able to finish his career at Camp Nou, but his employer believes is the architect of his side’s success in recent years and claims he is the best Spanish player ever and that the player’s enduring importance to the Catalan club cannot be overstated. Speaking after the player received a ‘Fair Play’ award from the Barca Players’ Group (Agrupacio Barca Jugadors), Rosell said:

“Without Xavi, Barca’s game wouldn’t make sense; he is the architect of our style of play. It would be harder for the others to score if we didn’t have Xavi in the side; he, along with [Andres] Iniesta, [Sergio] Busquets and [Lionel] Messi invented Tiki Taka – it’s Xavi signature style. Barca wouldn’t be the same without him and we’re very proud to have him as part of our family. He is a true legend of Barcelona,” the Blaugrana supremo enthused. “Time will put everything in its place and in years to come, we will look back on what he has done and say to ourselves, ‘What an amazing player!’ “I’m a big fan of statistics and if we take a look at Xavi’s figures, we’ll see that they don’t lie – Xavi has made almost 700 appearances for Barca and in terms of his numbers, he’s the best Spanish player [ever].”

Three Ex-Grand Prix Star Sentenced Away F

Q

atar Investment Authority owned French club PSG were a little thin on the ground when it came to supporters when just three people made the trip to their away game in Ajaccio.

The trio was spotted in the standing section at the

Stade Francois Coty looking rather lonely indeed. Bought by the billionaire corporation in 2011, they have spent millions on the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani in recent seasons, but they need to think about investing in a way of acquiring a new army of loyal fans not new players during the January transfer window.

ormer Formula One legend Eddie Irvine has been sentenced to six months in prison for a nightclub brawl in Milan over a woman.

The millionaire racing driver 48, glassed renowned playboy son of the former mayor of Milan, Gabriele Moratti and left him with visible injuries over his eye. He was found guilty of assault and battery. The target of his attack was also found guilty for assault and battery, having launched a hail of punches at Irvine, and was also handed a sentence of six months. The quarrel began over a text message sent by the former Ferrari driver to an ex girlfriend of Moratti, named Giorgia, witnesses told the court in Milan. Irvine was in the VIP area of Milan’s Hollywood nightclub chatting to the girl Moratti had recently broken up with, he attacked him, punching him three times, a lawyer for Irvine told the court. The Formula One champion, who now runs a property company, a shipping business and works for Virgin Media, claimed he was hit repeatedly from behind by Mr Moratti caus-

O

bviously sick of the dismal weather, Everton took a break from dreary, cold, Northwest England this week with a trip to Tenerife for “warm weather training,” which roughly translates to, they fancy a bit of sun! Some of this training as you can see consists of lounging by the pool and topping up the

tan. After the extremely busy English holiday match schedule in which they played four games in as little as 10 days they probably deserve a little sun lounging.

Here’s a cracking picture of Everton and U.S. National Team keeper Tim Howard, that he posted on his Instagram account last Monday, being expertly photobombed by England left back Leighton Baines in the background!

ing him to black out. He told the court: ‘I had arrived at the club at about midnight and sat at a table in the VIP area. I was drinking a vodka lemonade and while I was sitting on the sofa talking to Giorgia I was struck with two or three punches by Moratti. I lost my balance and I fell. Someone tried to stop Moratti. I didn’t look back because I was afraid he would hit me in the face.’ He said he was left with damage to his ear which prevented him from diving which he had always done easily before the fight. Under the Italian justice system both are unlikely to ever see the inside of a jail cell as they are automatically entitled to two appeals. In any case the statute of limitations on the crimes expires in 2015, after which the case will be dropped, unless all appeals have been heard. The jet set sportsman was a Formula One driver from 1993 to 2001, driving for the Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar teams. The Irish driver has an estimated fortune of 90million Euros, though at one time it was said to be as much as Euro200million.

In a tight game Marino owed a lot to goalie Alberto who continually defied the home side and kept the Las Americas side in the hunt. It’s all getting very tight

at the top of the Tercera Division with leaders Granadilla suffering a rare defeat and CD Tenerife B breathing down their necks with a 2-1 victory. This weekend Marino are on their travels again with a trip to CD Vera.

It could be interesting mingling with the traditional enemy but it does make good financial sense as the Canarian sides could share costs. They would be sure of a warm welcome, over the years there has been so much movement between the Canaries and Venezuela it is referred to as the eighth island.

T has to go down as a bit of a mauling but even after losing 92-67 at Valencia, iberostar Tenerife are still on course for the Copa del rey competition next month in Malaga. Second placed Valencia were just too strong for the

La Laguna team despite their formidable run of form, only Blagota Sekulic really hit the heights with 11 points. Carles Bivia managed 8 points but the scoring fizzled out after that, it could have been a heavier defeat if not for a strong last quarter that Tenerife took 16- 21. The top 8 teams in the

In three seasons there he got them promoted back into the Primera, into a UEFA Cup place and generally doing well but a run of poor results saw the axe head his way. Good luck to Pepe, he wont find the Hawthorns as warm as the Heliodoro but maybe he can show them a few of the tricks of the trade he learnt at Tenerife.

ACB League at the 27th January will go into the four day Kings Cup event in Malaga, Tenerife are tucked just inside that zone with 2 more games this month. The only cloud on the horizon is talk of top player Blagota Sekulic from Montenegro being stalked by the rich and powerful Barcelona team.

Spoiler Ref Leaves CD Tenerife With Selection Headaches

n his schooldays referee Jimenez was probably the sort of boy who broke his mates toys and put his thumb in all the cakes at the birthday party. As an adult he has settled for ruining great games of football, this 0-0 home draw for CD Tenerife against second placed Sporting Gijon was a cracker, plenty of skill, bags of commitment and two well matched side but the card happy ref made it all about him. Sporting were a big strong side and had racked up plenty of goals but they found the home defence on top form with Raul Llorente making a surprise return at left back. Roberto in goal grows in stature every week

and had another fine game, he took a fierce challenge from Lekic early on that left him doubled up but his determination to play on showed that he now has the character for top class football. Suso was a menace to the Sporting right back Serrano and was running him ragged. The action was switching from end to end with both teams giving it their all and some full bloodied challenges going in. Sadly the ref started to influence the game with a definite bias towards Sporting, maybe he felt a duty to amend for his colleague who sent three of their players off last week. Suso forced Cuellar to palm over his goal bound shot and Ayoze was making plenty of good runs but finding his bigger markers tough to deal with, he managed a good effort just before the break that rebounded to Suso but he

couldn’t finish it off. The second half couldn’t come quick enough for the 19,996 crowd, A nice bit of interplay between Cristo and a Aridane back pass deserved to open up Sporting but their keeper covered well, at the other end Scepovic again tested Roberto who foiled him expertly. Ayoze carved out a couple more openings and was unlucky not to get the scoreboard moving but Sporting were having the better of the second half with a little help from the ref. The sprinkling of yellow cards turned into a flood during a

gave a way a free kick with a foul and got a harsh booking and then talked himself into a second yellow and a sending off, Raul and Suso were also caught up in the flurry of cards and with Tenerife a man down the last 15 minutes became a matter of holding off the Sporting charge. Alberto made a rare appearance from the subs bench and showed his aerial power with a big leap and a strong header before the offside whistle pulled him back, Sepovic had the last

and probably best chance to win the game in the final minute, he was in a good position in front of the Tenerife goal but dragged his shot wide. A cracking game to watch, seven bookings and a sending off for Tenerife and two more yellows for Sporting was never warranted – this ref is still going to struggle for party invites. This Saturday it’s another home game, this time against Alcorcon at 7pm but without suspended Aitor Sanz, Bruno, and Ricardo.
