Well, here it is, my 2nd edition as editor, and this time I was flying solo, without the aid of a parachute, well it felt like it at times! Yes, Lorna, my mentor, or Jedi Master as I prefer to call her has left me to it this week, and what a week! I would also like to welcome our new designer, Colm McCarroll to the team, good luck Colm! On Wednesday, I was invited, along with other members of the foreign

Well I hope you enjoy this week’s paper, I’ve covered politics, motoring, sport, all the things that once upon a time I would have turned the page without a glance, stranger still, I really enjoyed it. What’s happening to me! Until next week, have fun.

President Meets Foreign Media C

arlos Alonso, the new President of the Cabildo held an informal meeting on Wednesday this week, to introduce himself to representatives from the foreign media, including the Tenerife Weekly. A Canarian born and bred, Snr. Alonso is from Santa Cruz and is 43 years of age.

There’s been an explosion of new life in Loro Parque recently, after the birth of 3 cute meerkats (Suricata suricatta) which together with other youngsters, like Rocky, the sea lion, the Bambu sharks and various species of parrots, expand the animal family of the most recognized zoo in Spain.

These attractive and curious mammals, known as “rock cats”, stand out for their high dynamism, speed and social customs, as they play in groups, while one of the adults acts as lookout and surveys the environment around them. After 2 months of pregnancy, the birth developed normally and did not require the intervention of the veterinarian or the zookeepers. The young are fed by the mother and together they enjoy the sun, make excavations in the ground and enchant all visitors, who adore watching them. Meerkats descend from the mongoose family and live in the area of the Kalahari Desert and the Namib in Africa. It is a small mammal, which can achieve a weight of 1 kg and a length of 50 cm, of which 25 cm is the tail. They are active during the day and extremely popular at the zoo, especially with children, who delight in watching them stand on their back legs on guard, looking for prey or to avoid being chased by predators. They are carnivores and eat insects and spiders, and other small mam-

mals. They hunt together and fiercely protect their young. Meerkats are delightful animals, so reminiscent of the familiar figure of Timon from the famous Disney movie “The Lion King”, and children love the exhibition that Loro Parque has specially developed for them. In their area of origin it is not unusual to keep them as pets, but in the West they are not considered suitable, because their behaviour is extremely destructive and in many countries the possession of meerkats, as well as other wild animals, is punishable by law. Diverse and numerous species of water, land and air have filled the nurseries of the park in the recent months, being breeding the main indicator of the welfare that the animals enjoy in their different ecosystems.

The conference was held in the Salon Noble, Cabildo Insular de Tenerife and was presented by Karen Blanchard, Communications Coordinator for Tourism, it was Karen who organized the meet and was there to greet us at the door, making us feel immediately at home. It was attended by about two dozen media representatives and was conducted primarily in Spanish, although Alonso, who was elected this September, answered several English spoken questions, concisely and articulately without hesitation. The meeting, which lasted a little over an hour included a lengthy introduction, in which the president outlined his plans and spoke of his goals for the Island, he also stated that he believed that the economic crisis which has held us in its grip for so long, would soon be over and that he had great hopes for the future of Tenerife. His opening speech was followed by question time,

in which many subjects were addressed. One subject discussed was how the Cabildo could improve on optimizing promotion of the island to the thousands of visitors that arrive by Cruise ship every day. Alonso let the statistics speak for themselves - 7 out of 10 Cruise ship travelers return to the island. He added that Tenerife offers over 40 excursions compared to only 3 or 4 in some Mediterranean destinations. It wasn’t all statistics; Carlos shared with us plans for a second tunnel in Santa Cruz for port traffic, as well as “extending the quality of the city landscape outside the Cabildo.” The project to open up the heart of Santa Cruz to the sea involves extending the area that stretches from the lake in front of the Cabildo to the sea; the whole area will get a facelift. The new infrastructure includes a luxury yacht marina, hotel and shopping mall in the port area. Swiss architects Herzog and De

Meuron will be involved.Phase 1 begins next year. Work recommences at the hospital in Mojon this month, we discovered. Originally only planned as a geriatric centre, plans for specialist treatment centres, daycare, an emergency room and to the surprise of some in the room, an oncology department complete with radiotherapy, it will also have rehab and radiology. Alonso hope both north and south will be operative by Oct. 2014, which will take the added strain off cancer sufferers and people who take care of them, who previously had to travel to the North hospital for treatment. The President continued to positively address every issue he was questioned about, I’m sure for much longer than his busy schedule allowed. I found him to be a positive and thoughtful man and I left feeling that with this “new blood” at the head of the Cabildo, maybe we can start to believe in a brighter future.

ThE MaGMa art and Congress Centre Tenerife sur, played host to a large representation of people from across the island, who attended the forum, courtesy of the Friends of south Tenerife (FasT ) to attend a charity gala to benefit the creation of a soup kitchen project by Los hermanos de La Cruz Blanca.

The meeting was attended by the president of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife,Carlos Alonso, the European Beach

Volleyball finalists, Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez, senior local government representatives of the island, representatives of business and social groups, as well as anonymous people committed to working for the welfare of our Los Hermanos De La Cruz Blanca society. The evening began promptly at 20:00 pm with a cocktail, which led to the main hall of the convention centre where they were served a menu by Chef Paul Pastor, prepared by 30 cooks from south of the island, which voluntarily participated in this event. In two scenes prepared for the occasion, directed by the producer of History, Eric Viana, journalists were

treated to an entertainment programme, starting with Mencey Romantico, Tavío Goyo, “Aeroflot” Russian acrobats, belly dancing with “Yana”, Vanity fashion show by Miss South and American Soul with “The Drifters “. Closing a beautiful evening with Pepe Benavente , the Funktastic Band and DJ Papagayo Beach Club. No doubt the massive influx of diners, and the sale of raffle tickets, in an evening that lasted until three in the morning, will meet the objectives set by the Southern Association and Los Hermanos De La Cruz Blanca.

By Marc Craig ne of the first articles I did for page 5 was called “Tenerife’s Hidden Gems- The Enchanted Forest”.

It was an account of our visit to Cruz Del Carmen, part of the stunningly beautiful and unique part of the Anaga forest, the “forest in the clouds” which, even in the height of summer is usually shrouded in a blanket of moisture, making it one if the most fertile parts of the island, with a huge variety if flora and fauna, a fact not wasted on the man who came up with the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin. Indeed, had it not been for the fact that he was offered a space on the HMS Beagle, which was en route to the Galápagos Islands, his revolutionary book may have been all about our little island instead. Anyway, during our time off, we decided to revisit the area with my mother in law, who, being a seasoned walker, we knew she would love to explore this wooded wonderland. So once again, we made our early morning drive up to the parking area at Cruz Del Carmen arriving about 9.30am...... only to find that it was like Los Cristianos after a bank holiday, it was rammed. Spanish, Scandinavians, Germans, Russians, it seems that Brits are a bit of a minority when it comes to visiting Tenerife’s treasures. Cars were double parked, waiting for walkers to return to their vehicles so that they could take their place, so we had no choice but to move on. I must stress that you shouldn’t be discouraged - this entire area is honeycombed with a spaghetti junction of hikes, paths, parking and viewing points, I think the reason that this particular one is so popular is that just about anyone can enjoy it, regardless of age or physical fitness, there’s even one route that’s suitable for wheelchairs. Once you’re in the labyrinth of different routes the crowds seem to evaporate and you can really enjoy the experience in solitude. A word of warning about

An Unexpected Journey expected journey, jumping from winding road to virtual goat trails, heading towards the top, North East corner of the island, we reached the literal end of the road at a tiny village called Lomo de las Bodegas, the road to this area is incredible, almost like the spine of the island, from it you can look left and right to see both sides of the ocean and its coastline, simply stunning. This is serious hiker’s terri-

dressing for the occasion, even in summer, Anaga can be damp, misty and chilly, this time it was virtually Baltic! With two sets of hiking boots and one fleece between three of us we probably wouldn’t have lasted the night, so, as the scouts say, be prepared! After parking at the nearest alternative, my fleece was reassigned to wife duty, leaving me with a t-shirt the thickness of tracing paper, we studied the wooden posts that give the names, destinations and lengths of the various walks and the shortest if I remember correctly was 9.6 km. An executive decision was swiftly made.... Driving Tour! So, we jumped back into our trusty vehicle and headed back down the road, we soon came to a junction and to my surprise we saw that a right turn onto the TF12 would take us straight to El Bailadero, an area I’ve mentioned in my articles several times before, as it is believed to be the site where an ancient coven of witches used to perform rituals around bonfires, and, some believe, still exist

to this day. Although I’d written about it I’d never been so I thought that this would be as good a time as ever. It was about 12 km down winding forest roads swathed in mist, quite eerie too; it was easy to imagine Nelson’s soldiers running through the dense forests in terror as the witches swooped down from the treetops! We arrived at El Bailadero, to be honest, I don’t know what I expected, still smoking embers from a ritual bonfire? A cottage made of candy? There is very little there, just a big mint green building that’s quite old and in disrepair, we couldn’t determine what it was. However on the way out was a modern hostel, with a restaurant, complete with a wooden deck overlooking the sweeping vistas of the Anaga valley which is a breathtaking way to drink a cup of coffee! There are also many information boards covering everything from farming history, geology and interesting facts such as Taganana, a town in this area that has only been accessible by vehicle for

tory, they were everywhere and when we drove as far as we could, at the village, large signs were on display, outlining the dangers and giving advice on provisions, clothing and routes etc. Finally we retraced our steps and drove back down until we joined the main road to San Andres and home, feeling satisfied having explored another magnificent corner of the island.

Manhunt For Yeremi Suspects The Guardia Civil have released photos of two Scottish men who once owned a cleaning service on Gran Canaria. They wish to determine whether the men kidnapped missing boy, Yeremi Vargas, who was last seen in 2007 by his cousins in the town of Vecindario.

Yeremi was only 7 years old when he vanished 6 years ago. Police hope to find witnesses who might link the men to his disappearance and presumed death. Charles O’Neill and William Lauchlan are now in prison in Scotland. They were arrested in Blackpool in 2010. One was convicted of killing a woman in Scotland who threatened to report him for molesting

boys, while the other was imprisoned on sex charges. A third Scottish man is also suspected of being involved, but his whereabouts are unknown. The suspects owned Rainbow Cleaning Services at the time Yeremi vanished. The men were deported from Spain after authorities determined they had molested two 15-year-old boys.

Competitors To Green Zone To Conquer Teide In Receive Facelift Endurance Race The Cabildo of Tenerife has tendered the refurbishment of the green area adjacent to the football field of Arona, as agreed by the Insular Government Council at a recent meeting.

On the 30th of November the TriTenerifeSur Half Triathlon Endurance takes place. It is a middle distance triathlon which will involve a swim of 1900 meters, followed by a 90 km cycling race and finally competitors must run a half marathon (21 km), without stopping the timer. This triathlon is part of the Canary Cup Long Distance Triathlon Federation Canaria.

The president of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, explained that this action is in addition to two that are currently running in the municipality of Arona, namely the improvement of the Avenue Annex parking in Rafael Puig and the City Center Plaza. “The City Council is firmly committed to the promotion of tourism activities in these public spaces, which are critical to improving the perceived image of the tourist areas,” says Carlos Alonso. The president of the Council stated that in the next two years over 14 million Euros will be invested in the execution of 14 works in the Regeneration Frame-

But the big challenge of this sporting event is that the circuit rider will go over Teide, to a height of 2200 metres. The area through which the three segments take place contains some of the most characteristic landscapes of Tenerife, taking the participant from the beauty of the beaches to the breathtaking scenery of our mountains. The 1900 metre swim will be held on the beach of Las Vistas, a circuit through calm, clear waters that will get the triathlete warmed up. The cycling section of the circuit will be closed to traffic for the most part and run through Adeje, Guia, Chio, Boca Tause, Vilaflor and Arona for 90 km in a single round. Finally the half marathon will take place from the promenade at the beach of Las Vistas to Playa del Bobo (Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas respectively) in a circuit of 7000 meters over 3 laps. Among the registered participants is Ironman distance world champion Frederik Van Lierde.

work Convention, “which since its launch in 2007 has carried out a total of 83 renovations worth 68.3 million Euros. “ Work in the area next to the football field, which the council intends to refurbish, has a budget of 237,412 Euros, funded through the Canary Plan. The objective of this project, which has a deadline of

six months, is to remodel the space near the football field to “enhance its relevance to the tourism environment in which is located.” As specified in the project, it will improve pedestrian routes, expanding the width of the sidewalk, and reserve space for a future bike path linking the town with Adeje. Gardens are also planned for the area.

El Rosario contaminated Soccer Experience by sewage by englishtimeadeje.com

The 8th Annual Masters Soccer Experience Football Tournament was held in the Las Torres Sports complex on November 9th and 10th, with many ex-professionals from the English and Scottish premier leagues as well as local over-35 teams who play every week here in South Tenerife taking part.

Many of the invited players come from all over the world to take part in this annual event, to combine a weekend in Tenerife with some fun football, though on the second day, when the titles are at stake, the competitive edge is obvious. During the second day of competition, local cheerleading troupe the Tenerife

Tigers also entertained the local crowd. As in previous years, the local teams are well prepared for the visiting sides, but this year it was two teams of ex-professionals who won both trophies. The Nottingham Forest Mobsters won the Plate and the overall champions were the Glasgow Bhoys. Adeje Sport

Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera presented them with the cup on Sunday evening at the end of two days of sport and entertainment. Tournament organiser Martin Tierney said he was delighted with the success of the tournament and thanked Adeje council for their ongoing support.

The local secretary for the Canary Coalition in El Rosario, José Miguel Fregel has said the existence of a layer of sewage sedimentation under the sea along the coast of El Rosario “is a serious and continuing problem affecting the fauna and flora of the coast and the health of the waters. The fact is that these waters are deeply affected by sewage” and that it is caused “by the negligence of the Government of El Rosario “.

After two years of investing two million Euros in finding a solution “it continues into disuse and, moreover, there is a pumping station that does not meet the technical require-

ments for operation”. Sewage is leaking into the ground along the coast. The Nationalist spokesman in El Rosario said further that “now, after many years of inactivity, the Council aims to solve the problem by forcing residents to pay for connection to the network, which will cost them 1,500 Euros per family “. The Canary Coalition representative stated that a technical report from a marine biologist and the Ministry of Environment, as well as a report to the Council on the sewage has been requested. This documentation will be the basis “to go to prosecution” and file a complaint “because what happens on the coast of El Rosario is a clear environmental crime and someone should take responsibility for the negligence that caused this situation.”

Thor Back In The Canary Islands Hollywood hunk Chris Hemsworth is back in the Canaries, a little over a year after The Tenerife Weekly spotted him in Mcdonalds while visiting his wife Elsa Pataky, who was filming “The Fast And The Furious 6.

Picture courtesy of lagomera.blogspot. The 30-year-old Australian was mobbed by swooning fans as he filmed scenes for his latest action film, “In The Heart Of The Sea”, on location in La Gomera and Lanzarote, The approachable Aussie asked his driver to stop so he could greet the crowd of excited girls, signing autographs, posing for photographs and handing out hugs, still dressed in his First Mate clothes of a dirty shirt, beige trousers, brown waistcoat and heavy work boots after an exhausting day on the open sea for the movie, directed by Ron Howard who also directed Hemsworth in racing biopic “Rush”, the film tells the true story of the sinking of the whale ship Essex in 1820. Based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s 2000 bestseller, In the Heart of the Sea tells the true story of the Essex which set sail from New England in 1820 but was struck by a large bull sperm whale in open water. The ship was destroyed and the crew was shipwrecked for 90 days thousands of miles from

home. Hemsworth is playing First Mate Owen Chase and Benjamin Walker is Captain George Pollard Jr. - They found themselves floating lost in the waters around South America and ultimately were forced to turn to cannibalism to survive. Dark Knight star Cillian Murphy, plays Second Mate Matthew

Joy in the historical epic. ‘(Heart of the Sea) is the true events that inspired Herman Melville to write Moby Dick,’ the Avenger star recently explained to US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel; ‘A bunch of sailors in a whaling ship get struck by a whale, the ship sinks and they jump onto the small rafts

and drift for 90 days. And basically they begin to die and eat each other... a romantic comedy,’ he joked. ‘And we have to get rather skinny. So we’re on 500 or 600 calories a day. It’s funny, you’ve never heard 15 big, burly guys playing sailors talk about their calorie-count, what they should and shouldn’t eat, what their cheat meal is going to be. I mean, you can consume 600 calories in a milkshake. So it ends up being a couple of small salads, a couple of small pieces of protein and that’s kind of it and you go to bed hungry. And then you have like a fasting period of 15 hours, like you stop eating completely, and then you have little meals through the day.’ Filming is split between the Canaries and Levensden Studios in London, close to the home he shares with wife, Elsa Pataky, and one-year-old daughter, India. Hemsworth is currently in cinemas, reprising his role as Norse God Thor, in “Thor: The Dark World”.

Candelaria Demands Longer Police Office Hours

The Canary Coalition spokesman in Candelaria, Nazareth Diaz, has demanded local police office in the town open in the afternoon and that it strengthens its administrative staff in the mornings. As Diaz explained, until recently the administrative staff handled the calls, so the offices were open in the afternoon. However, at the moment and because of cuts there are “no support staff” and it is the police themselves “that make these functions”.

The nationalist councilor said “Candelaria is a municipality big enough to need a local police office, always open, not only to meet the needs of citizens, but also of the thousands of tourists who annually visit Mar-

ian villa.”Clearly,” continued the mayor of DC, “it is not possible to talk about tourism strategy and business development, when the City is unable to provide an efficient and operating service as basic as having an office Local Police open.” Nazareth Candelaria Diaz argued that police need an office that offers advice, information, handles complaints and suggestions received, an office to inform all citizens who have outstanding paperwork , a place where the door is always open for citizens with a problem. Finally, said that “the work done by the local police in Candelaria is exceptional, no more can be asked as they are doing work beyond their duties” but that situation “cannot be maintained forever if we want to render a quality service “and therefore insisted on the need for this office to be provided with administrative support necessary to perform the services required.

Tenerife Weekly - 22nd November 2013 - 28th November 2013

plans for transformation of la Caleta By janetanscombe.com

IF aLL goes to plan, the La Enramada area of La Caleta in adeje will have a sports harbour within a few years. ashotel, business leaders (Círculo de Empresarios del sur - CEsT) and Puertos de Tenerife support the idea, which would see an investment of over 50m euros into the plan. at present, a commitment to at least that amount has been made by Vega a Inversiones, and the project is awaiting publication in the BoC: at that point the full extent will be known, and it will be possible for the public to express its own opinion. That opinion is likely to lead to a heated debate, because there is significant opposition to the plans in La Caleta itself.

Adeje’s Mayor Fraga, finding himself in the middle of a dispute between “the money” and local opposition, has to some extent sat on the fence, making comments about both environmental damage and business opportunities. The La Caleta Residents’ Association, however, is clear: “this is not a viable plan, it is not necessary, nor is it a priority for Adeje”, said its president Leticia Rodríguez in an interview with Diario de Avisos. The association is to meet this Friday to plan its next moves. Sra Rodríguez said that the area involved in the plans is huge, and that most of the current local businesses are against the proposals. Outside businesses, however, clearly see room for development, and profit, and may well have sufficient clout to drive this through. For many it might seem a win-win situation with La Caleta either remaining the charming little Canarian fishing village that it currently is, or developing into a new – and very upmarket – Puerto Colon. Time will tell.

ognition of all the work that is carried out by the Corporation to inform, educate and raise awareness among different groups that make up society in the prevention of forest fires. And the fact that our efforts have crossed the borders is an honor and a further boost for work well done.” The jury for the awards consists of twenty representatives of the main institutions of the country related to forest management and fire, from government to private companies (universities and research centers). They will be held on November 28, at the School of Engineers of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. From the Office of Environmental Voluntary Participation, the programme conducts its activities in different sectors of the population through lectures and conferences. These include the campaign ‘Let’s talk about fire and take a coffee? In 2012 it reached more than

15,800 people, and recruited 120 volunteers. Similarly, the Environmental Education Unit has conducted the programme to improve awareness of selfprotection measures for the

inhabitants of forestal areas. Residents are taught what measures can be taken in their homes, cars, farms and estates, and how to act regarding evacuation and confinement.

Red Cross assistance programme

Seventy Adeje families benefited from signing up for the Spanish Red Cross assistance programme in conjunction with Adeje council. In this particular case the families received personal hygiene kits. These kits were given to people in economic difficulties and contained products for

families with babies, women, men, as well as household cleaning products.

Overseeing the donations, which were handed over to recipients in the Aula Magna in the Adeje Cultural Centre, was councillor for social welfare, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, as well as volunteers from the Red Cross. The councillor thanked the Red Cross, a non-governmental organisation, for their

social assistance programmes in Adeje which, in this specific case, was helping individuals and families most in need. Amada Trujillo Bencomo said “these kits are very helpful for those who are receiving them and I would like to state that the Adeje council will continue to work in tandem with the Red Cross as these kinds of assistance programmes are of great benefit to the most vulnerable sections of society.”

Tenerife’s Star Party By Laura Fowler and Karen Blanchard, Turismo de Tenerife

Y

ear-round sunshine a short hop from home might be the enduring draw of the Canary Islands. But Tenerife holds all sorts of surprises, away from its holiday resorts, and one of them is stargazing.

The island is presided over by its volcano, as volcanoes are wont to do. The snowcovered cone of Teide is Spain’s highest mountain, and the surrounding lunar landscape of its protected National Park has just been made one of the world’s few Starlight Reserves. Its dark skies are clear as clear can be, free from light and dust pollution thanks to its high altitude and its position

out in the Atlantic, far from land and the path of tropical storms. Stargazers can go crunching across the hostile, scorched rock any night of the year, but to get a better idea of what’s out there, the Teide Observatory, up at 2,390 metres, will open to visitors during Starmus Festival, which takes place next summer. The festival brings together science, music and the arts. All kinds of people go, from astronomers and astronauts, to cosmic New Agers, all brought together by a shared interest in the cosmos. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin joined discussions at the 2011 festival; Queen guitarist Brian May - also an astronomer, in case you didn’t know - played. For summer 2014 there will be exhibitions of astrophotography

and lively talks, tours of the observatory, and a big star party, 2,000 metres high. Starmus Festival 2014 dates are yet to be confirmed. For more information visit www.starmus.com

STAY Much of the action, including the Star Party, happens at and around the Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide, a hotel high in the Teide National Park, with views stretching out across Tenerife. Meanwhile down on the coast, about 10 miles away in the lovely colonial town of Garachico, there are a couple of charming hotels: try stylish 18th-century Hotel San Roque, with its courtyard pool; or peachy-hued palacio Hotel La Quinta Roja, where the food is excellent.

4th Annual Lions Charity Shop Staff Lunch

There was a distinct oriental setting for some thirty plus Lions Charity Shop staff gathered at the Peking Garden restaurant in Costa Silencio for a special Sunday lunch, the fourth of its kind organised by the Tenerife Sur Lions Club.

The lunch was to mark the appreciation and thanks for the dedicated and hard work these volunteers have shown throughout the year. Much of the ability to continue the work of the Tenerife Sur Lions Club lies with these folk who staff the two shops and help run them with their good natured enthusiasm. But it’s not all hard work; there is the social and fun side too as the lunch proved. With two challenging quizzes to solve adding to the genial buzz of conversation and an excellent banquet meal there was a real party atmosphere. At the conclusion of the meal the answers to the quizzes were revealed, accompanied by much good humoured banter inspired by Master of Ceremonies, Ken Sadler. Ken in his usual witty manner was quick to assure the restaurant staff that the numbers being called for the prize bingo were not additional orders to the already excellent meal much to their relief and laughter. Lions President Norman Goodall MBE brought a word of appreciation for all the hard work every one of the volunteers does in raising the funds which allows the vital work of the Lions to continue.

He pointed out that not only over the past years had they help raise funds to provide holidays for disadvantaged and challenged children and an annual Christmas party for others but they had also each played a key role in continuing the on-going Lions Organisation’s commitment to helping meet the

needs of the local community. He further emphasised that with the growing impact of austerity measures the Lions were providing more and more help with local needs, laying emphasis to the Lion’s Scholarship Award that had been introduced recently to help talented but disadvantaged students to realize their potential of obtaining a university degree. Concluding, he reiterated the very real role all the Lions volunteers play in the ability of Tenerife Sur Lions Club to help meet the needs of others who are less fortunate. One thing is for sure the Lions Volunteers cannot be accused of “all work and no play makes for a dull charity shop” certainly not with this fantastic group.

Abama Kabuki, the Canary Island outpost of the Madrid-born Japanese fusion concept, has been awarded its first Michelin star based on the quality, mastery of technique, personality and consistency of its food. This new accolade joins the one star awarded to Chef Martin Berasategui’s M.B. restaurant which got its star in 2010 and has retained it in the 2013 guide. Canarian chef Daniel Franco trained at Abama Kabuki from its launch in 2006 under Rafael Carrasco and Kabuki’s founder Ricardo Sanz. In 2010 Franco’s extraordinary talent secured him the position of Executive Chef. He has since continued to develop his own culinary style and exceptional standards working the signature Kabuki menu with his own take on Japanese and Mediterranean fusion. Dishes at Abama Kabuki combine the elegance and technical style of Japanese cooking with traditional Canarian produce and dishes.

EVENTS ON THE ROCK Los Abrigos will be host to a fiesta in honour of San Andrés on Saturday 30 November from 6pm in the Plaza de Los Abrigos. There will be events, chestnuts and wine, and of course music until late.A similar fiesta is also being held in the Plaza de la Cultura in San Isidro on that evening as well, so those in the two parts of Granadilla have a choice of where to celebrate. This is a busy weekend in the Granadilla municipality because there is also the Sensaciones San Andrés event on Friday 29 in the county town’s own Plaza González Mena and not to be left out, Arona is holding its own “chestnuts, sweets and wines” event on the 29th as well in Valle San Lorenzo. It suddenly feels very autumnal … or even Christmassy!

The seventh edition of Mándate Una Tapa began on November 15th and runs until December 15th 2013. This year, as well as a tapa with water, wine or beer for 2.50 Euros, visitors will be able to enjoy desserts and cocktails at 2 to 3 Euros If you want more information, download the free app “sensaciones granadilla.” Here you can vote for your favorite tapas and participate in the draw of a tablet. And if you want, you can get your tapas guide at participating establishments along with your tapeador membership card.

It’s now an established run-up-to-Christmas event that attracts hundreds of thousands of people to La Laguna. The annual Noche en Blanco will take place on Saturday, 30 November. The previous four occasions have been enormous successes, and this year looks set to be just as, if not more, successful, with a wide range of activites and some “novelties” in the offing. As always, there will be street theatre, live music in the open air, shops open all night, street stalls, food, drink, church recitals – it is a real experience not to be missed.

New ferry service between Los Cristianos and El Hierro By janetanscombe.com

Last Monday a new ferry service was lauched uniting Los Cristianos and La Estaca in El Hierro. The new ferry, the Alcántara Dos, had been in El Hierro having passed its technical tests in Santa Cruz and making a perfect test crossing. The route should have commenced last Saturday, but with a few last minute hitches in paperwork, it was delayed until Monday. Fred Olsen already operates a route from Tenerife to El Hierro, but this new ferry will be a very welcome addition to increase communication between the two islands.

Carnaval 2014 By janetanscombe.com

It’s not even Christmas yet, but 2014’s Carnaval – the theme is “Cartoons” – is under starter’s orders with the publication of the provisional programme. The Tenerife capital’s carnival isn’t just the largest in Tenerife, it is widely considered to be the second largest in the world, with only the world-famous rio de Janeiro Carnaval being bigger. Events take place over a month, with almost everything seeming to come to a standstill when trying to get anything done in Tenerife!

One of the most keenly anticipated events, or series of events, is the murga competitions – a sort of combination of farce, satire and music (involving a type of kazoo) with outlandish costume and group singing. They are phenomenally popular and there is saturation television coverage of all the stages and groups taking part. I’ve posted videos in previous years of them. Perhaps most famous to outsiders, however, are the main parade, and the choice of carnival queen, and next year’s carnival will inevitably take place under the shadow of the terrifying experience of Saida Prieto, whose carnival queen gown was set alight in February by indoor fireworks from another contestant’s dress. The legal arguments and compensation issues are still ongoing, and it seems the emotional scars will understandably take much longer to heal than the physical ones. The provisional programme for Carnaval

2014, with events lasting from 31 January to 9 March, can be viewed online courtesy of Tinerguía, (there seems to be a virus affecting the carnival website itself at present). Two other Carnavals of great local interest are held in Los Cristianos and Puerto de la Cruz, and there will be more information on them in due course.

December Highlights Just like the rest of Europe, the main celebrations in Tenerife are Christmas and New Year’s Eve, when the island comes alive with beautiful decorations. Although Boxing Day is not recognised in the same way as it is in the UK, the British bars throughout the south of the island as well as those in Puerto de la Cruz in the north always have a festive atmosphere on the 24th, 25th and 26th. On the night of the 31st, huge street parties are held throughout many resorts, including Los Cristianos, Los Gigantes and Las Americas, when locals and tourists come together to celebrate. There are usually music concerts held in the town squares and the highlight of the evening is the spectacular firework displays held at midnight, followed by more partying until dawn.

other Celebrations in december are: 6th Constitution Day National 8th Immaculate Conception Events Around The Island 4th Choral Music Espacio de Arte La Casa de Piedra, Garachico 5th Dani Martin in concert - Magma Centre, Las Americas The former member of El Canto del Loco will present ‘Cero’ his second solo album. 7th XVIII International F e s t i va l Ta l e s of Los Silos Narra-

MAINLAND one Caught, one escapes NEWS IN after BRIEF a spanish public prosecutor is against indicting King Juan Carlos’s youngest daughter, Princess Cristina, citing lack of evidence. “Mere suspicions or conjectures are not valid elements for an indictment,” Pedro Horrach, the chief anti-corruption prosecutor in Spain’s Balearic Islands said in a report submitted to the court investigating the case. The case, centres on allegations that Cristina’s husband Inaki Urdangarin six million euros ($8 million) in public funds. Urdangarin, a 45-yearold former Olympic handball player, has appeared at the court for questioning as part of the probe but has not been charged with any crime and nor has Cristina. The far-reaching corruption probe has plunged the royal family into its worst popularity crisis since Juan Carlos took the throne in 1975.

Ireland and spain have said that they would exit their international bailouts within two and three months respectively, without further assistance. Eurozone has agreed to allow Spain to exit its aid programme for its banking sector in January. Spain last year took 41bn of a 100bn euro package of aid to rescue a number of banks that were crippled by bad loans from the collapse of a property and construction bubble and to form a socalled bad bank to dispose of property and loans whose value has plunged. Brussels will still monitor Spain’s banking system and public finances every six months. spain’s national Court on Tuesday issued arrest orders for former Chinese president Jiang Zemin and four other officials as part of a probe into alleged genocide by China against Tibet. The five also include former Prime Minister Li Peng; former security and police chief Qiao Shi; Chen Kuiyan, a former Communist Party official in Tibet; and Pen Pelyun, ex-family planning minister. None has been formally charged. Former Chinese President Hu Jintao is also under investigation although his arrest has not been sought. Spain’s legal system recognizes the universal justice principle, under which genocide suspects can be put on trial outside their home country. The policy allowed former judge Baltasar Garzon, to try to chase late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. a spanish court has ordered a German pharmaceutical company to pay compensation to 22 Spaniards born with disabilities after their mothers used the drug thalidomide during pregnancy decades ago. Madrid’s provincial court ordered the Gruenenthal Group in Spain to pay 20,000 Euros for each percentage point of disability of victims recognized by Spain’s Health Ministry. The total compensation bill was not immediately made known but it was much lower than the 204 million Euros sought by The Spanish Association of Thalidomide Victims, which brought the case for some 200 alleged victims. Thalidomide was a sedative prescribed between 1950 and 1960 for morning sickness. Thousands of babies whose mothers used it were born worldwide with abnormally short limbs and in some cases without arms, legs or hips. spanish police have seized 10 million Euros, one of their biggest cash finds ever, and 452 kilograms (100 pounds) of cocaine in raids on a drug gang. Officers also arrested five suspected traffickers in raids in the eastern city of Valencia and the capital Madrid, a police statement said. Officers found most of the drugs and the bank notes in a house in Valencia “one of the biggest seizures of cash ever carried out in Spain”, the statement said. Of the five suspects, two were arrested in Valencia and two in Madrid, where the gang had another house that it used to organise transportation of the drugs.

MIChaEL McCartney, 78, was arrested just hours after his details were published during the latest operation Captura appeal.

Spanish police raided his apartment in Alicante where he is now in police custody awaiting extradition .McCartney was convicted of committing sexual offences against three young males, all under 16, on different occasions over a number of years. McCartney becomes the 54th wanted individual to be arrested as part of Operation Captura since its launch in 2006, which has so far seen 76 appeals made public, including this new list of 13 wanted faces. Another of the “unlucky 13” was sighted in Lancaster

but managed to escape. Brian Thexton, who was thought to be hiding in Spain was apparently seen in a white Vauxhall Insignia and was asked to pull over by an officer in Aberdeen Road, He walked over to the car to speak to the driver, and reached into the vehicle to remove the keys from the ignition, a police spokesman said. But then the car was driven away, trapping the officer’s arm and dragging him a short distance down the road. “Fortunately, the officer freed himself before he was seriously injured. The car was then driven away at speed, mounting the kerb, narrowly missing pedestrians,” a Police spokesman said. The vehicle was found a short time later having been set on fire on Fernham Carr Lane.

Thexton is accused of being involved in robberies where a gang would tie up homeowners and force them to give up alarm codes and safe combinations, he is also awaiting trial for conspiracy to supply cocaine, over claims that he was the middleman in the sale of half a kilo of the drug, and had admitted conspiring to steal cars and machinery. For years, Spain had been a popular place in the sun for British criminals evading capture. Massimo reports that the time period of 28th October - 2nd November 2013, saw low prices

for excellent quality produce. Tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers were all of very high quality due to the

fact that plants are young and fruits are exceptional. “Prices though did not reflect quality,” says Massimo. “The main cause of low prices is still competition from Holland, as it is the end of the cycle for them and so they sell their produce at any price. It must be said though that prices reflect the quality.” Dafran & Darzoves’ “Sweetkiss” are date tomatoes that have a very p a rticular

oblong shape. They are very sweet, as the sugar content is over 12%. “This year, our produce reaches 14% - they are sweet indeed,” comments Massimo. Despite their sweetness, date tomatoes are ideal for low-calorie and low-salt diets and they are rich in vitamins A and C as well as lycopene, a very important antioxidant against free radicals and they are also considered to have cancer fighting properties. “Raw or just cooked, date tomatoes meet the most sophisticated needs. At Dafran & Darzoves, we love to pair it with a veal tagliata on a bed of bresaola and rocket.”

a BrITIsh motorist is planning to sue the Guardia Civil after being detained for hours over an escalating set of trumped-up charges.

Jonathan Adshead, 45 from Lancashire, is furious after being accused of a litany of crimes including knocking over a cyclist and talking on the phone, but only finally being fined for failing to indicate correctly, an offence he strongly denies. The motor dealer, a regular visitor to Spain, was told to pay the 100 Euros fine or spend ‘at least a night’ in the cells. He and his wife Carmel were driving out of Mijas pueblo when a Guardia Civil police car pulled them over and told them that they had failed to indicate at a roundabout, but when they denied the charge, things turned nasty, The officer got very angry, ignoring their attempts to cooperate and insisted they came to the station for more questioning. “We now see the whole thing as absolute corruption – we were gobsmacked. When I came over with my phone, so he could speak to the insurance company, he knocked it out of my hand, I couldn’t believe it.” They spent the next three hours at the station being

questioned by four different officers, who continually invented new charges. “They assumed a couple of Brits, leaving a small village at lunch time would have been drinking – I think they thought it was a sure bet – but when the breathalyser showed all zeros they just about blew the roof off the place.” They then alleged that he had hit a cyclist, threatened to compound his car and arrest him for the night. When

he was accused of talking on his mobile while driving he showed them his call history, which proved that he had not been on it since the morning; “They kept coming up with new charges. The police said, ‘pay up, or it’s really not going to be a good weekend for you. They might as well have put a menu in front of us and said, choose what you want to pay for.” Eventually they managed to get a Spanish friend to speak to the police, who ad-

L.A.’s notorious rush-hour traffic delayed the arrival of the guests of honour for almost an hour, the reception was held at the mansion that former HBO head Costos shares with designer Michael Smith. Antonio Banderas and Benicio Del Toro were among the rich and famous, invited to the exclusive event. Banderas, who for some

time has been the ambassador for “Brand Spain,” accompanied the prince and princess from Madrid on their state visit to the United States and in that time had a long conversation with them and with the Spanish Foreign Minister. As a result of these conversations, he stated before the reception that he has a feeling that his country will overcome its economic crisis even before experts predict. The royal couple are in America to take part in events commemorating milestones in Spanish exploration and settlement in North America, although they also visited several high-tech firms in Silicon Valley on Thursday.

Abortion Rights Protests In Spain

A protest in the Spanish parliament has brought women’s rights centrestage in recession-hit Spain. Orchestrated by the feminist group Femen, it demonstrated the anger felt by some over planned reforms to abortion law.

The government aims to reverse legislation introduced by its Socialist predecessor in 2010 –limiting the circumstances in which abortion can be carried out. It is a controversial

proposal in a country where the termination rate is the highest in Europe, with 120,000 terminations performed annually. Isabel Serrano speaks for a campaign, “Decidir Nos Hace Libres” that unites some 250 groups opposed to changing the law. “The way it is in the country, with the law as it is, the problems have simply been minimised. Women can have abortions in way that’s safer for their health and more fairly, because in each of the autonomous regions the state will pay for termi-

nations. There hasn’t been a great rise in abortions – only a small increase. When something works well we can’t see any legal, health or social reasons to change reason to change the law,” she says. The current law allows abortion on demand up to 14 weeks, and up to 22 weeks if the foetus appears seriously deformed or if the mother’s physical or mental health is at risk. Under the government’s plans, the procedure could only be performed in cases of rape or where the mother’s health is seriously at

“Rooster Pull” Originated In Spain

New Mexico is a state famous for its many old Hispanic and Indian customs that have survived the passage of time. Ancient practices and folk traditions lend an exotic air to the Southwest,a land steeped in history. One strange custom, now rare today, is the corrida de gallo, or “rooster pull.” Formerly this “sport” was found in all of New Mexico’s villages and larger towns.

As told in this description from the early 1840s; “A common rooster or hen was tied by the feet to some swinging limb of a tree, so as to be barely within reach of a man on horseback. Or the fowl was buried alive in a small pit, leaving only the head above the surface. In either case, horsemen racing at full speed

grabbed the head of the bird, which, being well greased, generally slipped out of their fingers. As soon as someone succeeded in tearing it loose from the tree or from the pit, he spurred his horse and tried to escape with the prize. He was chased by the whole sporting crew. The first who overtook him tried to seize the fowl, a fight ensured, during which the poor chicken was torn into atoms.” The writer goes on to explain that should any challenger retrieve the whole bird, he takes it at once to his lady and presents it to her. And she carries the feathered creature that same night to the village dance where she displays it as proof that her man is the best lover in the neighborhood. As far back as the Middle Ages, the corrida de gallo was popular throughout Spain. There, the rooster was often suspended by its feet from a rope stretched across a nar-

row street. The riders dashed by, rising in their stirrups in an effort to wring off the bird’s head. That was made harder because men tugged at either end of the rope so that the target bobbed wildly in the air. The chicken, an Old World bird, was brought from Spain to Mexico, and eventually to the upper Rio Grande Valley. With it came the corrida de gallo. Soon the Pueblo Indians adopted the rooster pull and are now the only ones who still do it today, the custom having died out in Hispanic communities during the 1940s. The entire affair can be fairly dangerous, especially when the rooster is buried and the rider must lean from the saddle at top speed and make his wild grab. In a number of places, the corrida de gallo was abandoned after someone was killed. In part, the rooster pull was regarded as a “a ma-

risk, and up to a limit of 14 weeks. Minors under 16 need the approval of parents or legal guardians to have an abortion . “For the first time in years the woman will have to abide by the decisions of others – a doctor, a judge, who has no regard for her personal convictions, or her intimate feelings. This bill will completely obliterate the free will of the woman. Inevitably, this will create two different situations. The woman who has the economic means will go abroad where she’ll have an abortion with all legal

cho thing,” in which youths showed off their riding skill in front of the ladies. But it also had a deeper, almost unconscious, religious meaning dating back to the pre-Christian pagan rites of Europe. In most cases, the rooster pull was conducted on the feast day of San Juan, that is, St. John the Baptist. In ancient Spanish symbolism, drops of blood were closely identified with drops of water. The shedding of blood, as in the

and health guarantees. The woman who doesn’t have these means will be condemned to an illegal abortion, without legal or health guarantees,” says Dr. Diego Fernandez Alvarez. A recent study suggests more than a quarter of Spanish abortions are for economic reasons. Access to abortion is far from uniform, or unanimous around Europe. National laws vary, and the European Parliament has just stepped back from voting on whether or not to recognise abortion as a fundamental human right.

rooster pull, helped bring rain because the spattering of red drops was powerful magic. Nor is it coincidence that the corrida de gallo was scheduled for the feast of St. John the Baptist, he is closely identified with water, since he baptized Christ and is regarded as patron of pure water. Also, like the rooster, he lost his head which must have been accompanied by a spattering of blood. This age-old custom has

disappeared in most parts of New Mexico. The danger associated with it as well as the declining number of horses available to villagers provide a partial explanation, but in the villages where the practice continues, it is a reminder of a bygone age, before Spain discovered the New World and a testament to the power of a tradition that has been transported across half the globe from a time long gone.

Spanish Border Checks Don’t Violate Law

The European Commission has announced that it has sent letters to the authorities of Spain and the United Kingdom addressing the issues raised by the border and customs controls between Spain and Gibraltar.

The EU’s executive body said in a statement that it has received a series of complaints about the checks made by the Spanish authorities at the border with Gibraltar. To better understand the specificities of the crossing point of La Linea de la Concepcion, the Commission or-

ganised a technical visit on September 25. “On the basis of its observations during this technical visit and of the information provided by both authorities, the Commission has not found evidence to conclude that the checks on persons and goods as operated by the Spanish authorities at La Linea de la Concepcion have infringed the relevant provisions of Union law,” noted the statement. The border has become difficult to police, with heavy traffic volumes in a relatively confined space and due to the increase in tobacco smuggling into Spain. The Commission urged the authorities on

both sides to address these challenges. It recommended to Spain to carry out more targeted checks in order to reduce the large amount of random border controls and to improve communication with the United Kingdom regarding information on tobacco smuggling. To the UK, it recommended risk-based profiling of travelers, improved legislation and efficient fight against tobacco smuggling. Cigarettes in Gibraltar are 40 percent cheaper than in Spain, which leads to increasing amounts of travellers becoming tempted to try cigarette smuggling.

www.tenerife-weekly.com ThE spanish government has granted itself powers to raid solar-panel owners’ properties to ensure they are complying with its efforts to tax energy received from their own solar panels — effectively taxing use of the sun.

In new regulations, officers from Spain’s Industry Department now have the ability to “raid” any property they suspect has fallen afoul of the law. If the resident refuses to allow access to their property, the officers can then get a court order to raid the house by force. Due to its climate, Spain is one of the global leaders in solar production, and with help from subsidies by the former socialist government, as many as five thousand Spanish homeowners took advantage of outfitting their properties with solar paneling after private energy generation — known in Spain as autoconsumo — was legalized in 2011. Since the economic

crisis began, people who invested in the solar power saw it as a way to ease the pressure. But with a change in government, the ruling Popular Party now regards solar panel owners as freeloaders. Once identified as avoiding the tax, officials are authorized to seize any and all documentation relating to energy consumption and seal off the property. If a resident is found to have been generating more energy than they have paid tax, or they have not hooked up their private solar panels to the national grid, they can be fined for as much as 30 million euro; ”equivalent to what a nuclear-power producer might pay for a radioactive leak that endangers public safety”, claims the Wall Street Journal. Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria, who introduced the law, said, “I support ‘auto-

consumo’ [independent power generation by households] … but the power system has infrastructure, grids that the rest of us Spaniards who are in the system have to pay for. And we pay for it through our electricity bill.” Former Spanish Secretary for the Environment Teresa Ribera hit back, saying, “It’s like asking cyclists to pay a levy to keep open the petrol stations they don’t use.” People opposed to the new law insist its being implemented to help the broke government bail itself out. Spain owes 26 billion euros to the Spanish power production companies. Forbes magazine joined the debate stating; “You get the feeling that government officials were out of ideas, stared up at the sky one day and thought, ‘I’ve got it! We’ll tax the sun!’”

Spain wins “wine Harrods rude Christmas lights of the Year” title

sPanIsh wine’s 2004 Cune Imperial Gran reserva beat saintÉmilion’s Canonla-Gaffeliere and Willamette Valley’s domaine serene Pinot noir to be named “Wine of the Year” by the u.s. magazine Wine spectator, the first time in five years that a nonamerican wine has won and the first such trophy for spain since the competition started in 1988.

In the past 25 years, the “Wine of the Year” award has been shared predominantly between West Coast wineries, Bordeaux and Châteauneuf-duPape. The first and only time Australia has won the title was in 1995, with Penfolds Grange. Chile won it’s first-ever title in 2008 thanks to the 2005 vintage

of Casa Lapostolle in the Colchagua Valley. The Rioja achieved a score of 95 point out of 100, judges made their decision based on “its ability to balance past and future in such delicious harmony.” The wines are rated on the basis of their tasting scores, value for money and volumes produced. U.S. critic Stephen Tanzer, rated it at 93 when he last tasted it, although British critics were not as impressed: Jancis Robinson MW scored the wine 17/20 as did London-based Decanter magazine. At this year’s International Wine Challenge, the wine could only manage a bronze medal. Red wines usually dominate the awards with a couple of notable exceptions: Sauternes’ 2001 Château Rieussec took the title with a perfect 100 rating in 2004 and Laroche’s 1996 Chablis Les Clos shared the 1998 title with Domaine de Baumard’s sweet chenin blanc from the Quarts de Chaume appellation.

a

VIraL campaign online, which is hitting twitter by storm, has revealed that a disgruntled harrods Father Christmas has written a rather rude message in the Christmas lights on the side of the world famous department store. We can’t use the phrase in a family newspaper but it can be translated to the more acceptable “Go away harrods!” According to thepoke.co.uk, the

masterpiece is the work of an ex employee, fired by Harrods from his job as the toy department’s Father Christmas. The employee is reported to have displayed his message by “gaining access to a maintenance control room.” Lloyd Hudson, 35 from Ilford, Essex, was able to locate the chart and corresponding switches for Harrods 10,000 external light and played havoc with the festive decorations. According to a spokesperson from Harrods it was his drunken behaviour that got him fired, and apparently the Bad Santa “had drunk the best part of two bottles of whis-

key” when he committed the sweary lights offence and took part in a standoff with security guard and police for an hour and a half. One passerby stated; “I was with my grandchildren. We had just gotten off the bus. I said ‘look everybody’ and pointed up to the lights – but you know what the lights said? That is not an appropriate message for a child. At least not at Christmas time.” After causing a storm on Twitter and becoming a top trending hit on Google, it wasrevealed that the whole thing was a joke, and in fact Harrods world renowned Christmas are as magical and as clear of profanities as ever.

PEoPLE who leave the TV on, forget to turn off lights when they leave a room and have their electric boiler running full pelt 24 hours a day could be in for a big shock if they install this handy new gadget. households prone to this kind a waste often pay more than 2000 pounds a year, twice the national average and as the national audit office warned last week, electricity bills will soar by more than inflation for the next 17 years.

But you can get help from a little spy called an electricity monitor. One type goes by the name of an Efergy e2, and it cost £48.69, but there are many others on the market. Installing them is easy. Attach a sensor into your main electricity feed cable, that

in turn connects wirelessly to a unit that tells you exactly how many watts your home is consuming. Once this helpful little fella starts to ticktale on how much juice things like your tumble dryer are using and the frightening cost that it adds to your monthly bill, maybe it’s time to start a war on wattage, because it’s not just the large appliances that burn a hole in your pocket — it’s all those standby lights, DVD players, iPod speakers, mobile-phone chargers, the Sky box, and the TV can be drinking your mains supply just by being on standby-prepare to turn into an electric saving dictator!

a sWEdIsh hotel established in 1990 that is completely constructed from ice and snow has been ordered by authorities to install fire alarms, leaving the management “a little surprised” to say the least.

Tourists flock from all over the world to stay in the vast igloo in the country’s far north, to sleep on one of their carved ice beds. Located in the small Arctic town of Jukkasjarvi, temperatures plummet as low as -8C in win-

ter but the Icehotel needs to be rebuilt every year as it melts by spring. Each year the mixture is sprayed over arch-shaped frames and left to set until they are solid enough for the moulds to be removed and reveal a stunning ice hotel, constructed using layers of ‘snice’ - a mixture of snow and ice - which features the insulating properties of snow and is both lighter than ice and stronger than snow. Hotel spokeswoman Beatrice Karlsson said: “We were a little surprised at first, but the reason is that there are

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly

things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins. To us the most important concern is

the safety of our clients, so we will comply.” Construction is dependent upon constant sub-freezing temperatures and installing an alarm system has made building the hotel even harder than before. “The environment is humid, and ice and snow... move, so it had to be taken into account, it’s been a challenge for our building team, but it made us one experience richer.” The hotel was the first of its kind when it opened in 1990 but since then others have since popped up in Norway, Canada and Japan. The structure was first conceived as a work of art and has stayed true to its artistic roots, getting a new design annually which often features ice sculptures. The hotel opens for business in December this year and will stay open until April.

Record Breakup! David Carbines, a vintage vinyl shop boss form Worthing, is suing his former girlfriend for allegedly not giving back his record collection when they split up. Cora Spaans, failed to return more than 7000 of his records after they broke up in 2012.

As well as being a couple, Mr. Carbines and artist Miss Spaans, once ran an art and rare record shop called Abstracks, but as part of a messy separation, Miss Spaans made a legally-binding promise at Worthing County Court not to damage or dispose of any of his things left behind in the flat they once shared, however Carbines claims that despite attempts by his mother and himself to collect the valuable record collection, some 7,000 are still missing, including some

rare and valuable Beatles and Elvis LPs. The vinyl, collected over 18 years are worth £17,500, he claims, and includes a valuable early pressing of The Beatles’ White Album and a copy of Elvis Presley’s eponymous debut LP. Also included in it are the entire back catalogues of the Spice Girls, Girls Aloud and Five, some signed by the artists. Having failed to have his ex jailed in a court case that was dismissed in March, Mr. Carbines, whose record collection still numbers 6,000, took his case to the Court of Appeal, where he said he now wanted was his records back, or cash compensation. He told Mr. Justice Coleridge that he knew exactly which of his records were missing because he bought them himself, producing a 70-page document, listing every one of the records. “Mr. Carbines is a serious

collector of records and his whole collection he has itemised, from A-Z, in a lengthy schedule which runs to 70 pages, it is a most impressive document and he says that, because he bought every one himself, he has been able to complete that from his own memory”, said the judge “Not only is he seeking the return of the items, but he is seeking instead, where appropriate, compensation in lieu of the return of the items. I am satisfied, having seen the list, that there may be further evidence which, had the judge had it on March 5, could have made a distinct difference to the result.” Mr. Carbines, a songwriter, also says a hard drive containing his self-penned songs and the service history of his 1986 Ford Capri are missing. Spaans denies having any of Carbine’s property and was not present or represented at the Appeal Court hearing.

gramme’s original writer, Roy Clarke. Other returning cast members include Lynda Baron and Maggie Ollerenshaw as nurse Gladys Emmanuel and Mavis from the original series.

At least eight people have died and many more are feared dead as powerful tornadoes carved a path of destruction across the US Midwest. The twisters were triggered by a “very dangerous” and fast-moving weather system, causing havoc in 10 states.

The National Weather Service reported that more than 60 tornadoes struck, unleashing 80mph winds and hail stones up to two inches in diameter. The winds, which destroyed homes, uprooted

trees and flipped cars upside down - could affect more than 50 million people. Illinois was struck the hardest. At least six were killed and dozens more injured there, but with communications down and routes impassable, it could be weeks before the true extent of the damage is assessed. In Michigan, a 21-year-old man died when his vehicle was crushed by a fallen tree and the body of a 59-yearold man was found entangled in high-voltage power wires. Washington, a town of 16,000 in Illinois, appeared to have suffered the most severe damage.

“I ran into the basement, jumped onto my wife and daughter and looked up and just saw white above us,” said Ryan Bowers, a Washington resident whose house was destroyed. Another witness said; “Most of my neighbourhood is completely destroyed, everything has been demolished. Families have lost their homes, people don’t have anywhere to sleep and the electricity has gone.” The severe weather brought down phone lines, caused thousands of power failures and left debris strewn across roads. It has also caused the cancellation of many flights.

Crash Cow!

a WEaVEr in Cornwall had the shock of her life when two cows crashed through the roof of her home. sue Marshall was vacuuming her home when she heard a crash in another room and, on investigation, found a cow standing in her workshop, having just missed the loom she had been using only minutes before. Mrs. Marshall managed to get the bemused bovine out of her home, only to see a second cow plunge through the roof!

Mrs. Marshall, from Lamorna, near Penzance, said: “I was hoovering at the time and heard an almighty crash. I assumed that a tree had come down. I was astonished to find that a cow had fallen through the roof of the workshop, narrowly missing

my loom and leaving a huge hole in the roof. No sooner had I let the startled animal out than another one fell through another part of the roof! Both cows narrowly missed the

loom, w h i c h was incredibly fortunate, and neither was injured. I was in absolute shock”. The animals had escaped from their field, situated above Mrs. Marshall’s converted barn, and walked down onto her house. “The two cows were clearly

distressed, the first careered out of the yard into an adjacent field, the second decided to hang around and made a bit of mess of the garden. I looked up at the fence and saw the rest of the herd looking on; a helpful neighbour came to our aid and made sure no more came through the fence. We had to make the workshop waterproof, but I wasn’t able to continue working. It’s been quite a stressful experience; the cows clearly thought that there was some good grazing on the other side of the fence. The boundary has been repaired now so hopefully we won’t be getting any more uninvited guests.” Cornish Mutual, the insurer that is dealing with the claim said: “This very unusual case really does highlight the importance of keeping boundary fences in good condition.”

Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England saw up to 10cm (4 inches) of snow last Tuesday, and the cold front swept down across the country bringing cold, wintry gusts of up to 70mph across some of the west coast, forecasters say a spell of high pressure will see icy conditions all over Britain for the next two weeks, with temperatures as low as minus 4. Forecaster Ben Windsor of Meteogroup said; “It will get quite cold in London, there’s

a chance of a bit of sleet, but probably not snow.” Nicola Maxey, a spokeswoman for the Met Office, said: “Temperatures will be below the average maximum for November of 9.13C, and much of country is looking at maybe not much over 5 or 6 degrees. It will stay cold, particularly in the south east, with frost widespread. This generally settled but cold weather with frost patches takes us through to 3 December,” she said. Manchester will be the coldest city this weekend, when the mercury is tipped to fall to minus 2C on Friday and minus 3C on Saturday. Ms Maxey said the majority of us will see wintry showers, with the possibility of settled snow on higher ground.

The group’s Monty Python’s Flying Circus TV show was made between 1969 and 1974 and is widely acknowledged as having revolutionised British comedy, amassing millions of fans for their anarchic comedy series and films, which also launched their own successful solo careers, and inspiring whole new generations of comedy writers and performers. The show will be their first time on stage together since performing at the Hollywood Bowl on September 15, 1980 and 40 years after they last appeared on stage in the UK. Tickets go on sale at 10am on November 25.

Holy Smoke its Batkid!

Five-year-old Batkid Miles Scott stepped down from a stage outside San Francisco’s City Hall with the key to the city after a full day of crime fighting, the leukaemiasurvivor’s wish to be Batkid for a day had come true, from a special edition of the Gotham City Chronicle to a Batmobile, Miles’ dreams were realised. As many as 12,000 people in San Francisco turned out to help make Miles’ wish come true, and millions more watched on from around the world - including President Obama, who tweeted in support of the brave Batkid.

Woman Confesses To Triple Murder

A woman has admitted murdering three men in Cambridgeshire. Kevin Lee, Lukasz Slaboszewski and John Chapman were killed between March and April this year, their stabbed bodies were found in remote ditches around the Peterborough area, where 30 year old Joanna Dennehy is from. She was arrested after a police hunt, during which officers distributed her picture and described the distinctive star tattoo she has under her right eye.

Dennehy also pleaded guilty to preventing the lawful and decent burial of all three victims, as well as the attempted murders of two other men, Robin Bereza and John Rogers. Appearing at the Old Bailey, Dennehy told Justice Sweeney: “I’ve pleaded

San Francisco became Gotham City for the day as Miles worked his way around the city, fighting crime as lined the streets to watch. First, he rescued a damsel in distress, then he foiled a dastardly plan to rob the bank by the Riddler, and rescued mascot Lou Seal from the clutches of the Penguin. Patricia Wilson of the Make-A-Wish Foundation paid tribute to the hundreds of people and thousands of well-wishers who made Miles’ wish come true. When the charity, which grants wishes for ill children, asked Miles to name his dream, his answer was simply: ‘I want to be Batkid!’ ‘It might be the first time a Lamborghini has had a booster seat,’ she joked. Every time I picked up the phone, I got a yes. And it was followed by a question: How else can I help?’ she said. Miles’ parents were there to watch their little boy become a superhero; ‘This is closure for us. He finished treatment in June; it’s been a long three years for us. So this is one way to kick it off,’ said father Nick Scott. Miles Scott, from Sikiyou County, near Oregon, assumed the persona of ‘Batkid’, donning a mini-cape in his crusade to rid the city of its fiercest foes, the Penguin and the Riddler. Hundreds of people lined the streets and

guilty and that’s that.” Her barrister, Nigel Lickley QC, said: “The course of the arraignment is not one we had anticipated.” The bodies of Slaboszewski, 31, who was stabbed in the heart, and Chapman, 56, who died from neck and chest wounds, were found at Thorney Dyke, near Peterborough, on April 3, earlier, that week, Lee, 48, was discovered in a ditch in Newborough, around 10 miles away. He had been stabbed in the chest. He was last seen on Good Friday and

reported missing later that day when his Ford Mondeo was found burned out near a farm in Yaxley. The motive, if any, for the killings is not yet known, Dennehy appeared alongside her boyfriend Gary Stretch, 47, who stands 7ft 3in tall, who denied the two attempted murders. He also pleaded not guilty to helping Dennehy dispose of the three bodies. Dennehy joins an exclusive club of female serial killers, much rarer than male sociopaths.

A laboratory report was carried out after Murphy’s father Angelo Bertolotti sued the L.A. County Coroner after he refused to accept their verdict of natural causes, pneumonia and anaemia as the reason for their deaths 5 months apart. Gaining access to hair samples he hired a private lab to investigate. They found evidence she was poisoned — probably by “a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent,” according to the report, which said that Murphy’s body had dramatically elevated levels of aluminum, manganese, barium and other metals. LAPD spokesman Officer Cleon Joseph said it would be up to the coroner’s office whether to take further action; “Whatever the findings, if there was something to report, they would report it to us,” he said.

cheered as he emerged from the Batmobile - driven by an adult Batman - before freeing a damsel who had been tied to cable car tracks. As she embraced him in thanks, he got a call that the Riddler was trying to rob a vault downtown, so headed to the Financial District and promptly stopped the thief in his tracks. While at a Burger Bar, he received a call on his batphone telling him the Penguin was kidnapping Lou Seal. Batman and Batkid apprehended the villain and freed Lou Seal, the San Francisco Giants mascot since 1996. After catching the Penguin, Batkid made his final stop at City Hall, where the Mayor and the Police Chief of Gotham City thanked him and gave him the key to the city. Batkid was praised for his efforts, with Senator Dianne Feinstein tweeting: ‘Thanks for saving Gotham, Batkid!’ Around 1,000 special edition ‘Gotham City Chronicle’ newspapers were handed out at Union Square, with the headline: ‘Batkid saves city’. Graham Nolan, who drew the Batman series through the 1990s and co-created of the villain, Bane, participated with drawing showing Miles as Batkid fighting Bane. Nolan signed it: ‘For Miles, a real superhero!’ The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to give them hope.

madrid - 2 days was By John Wetherby

T

hErE is so much to see and do in this fabulous underrated city which is, in my opinion, often over shadowed by spain’s second city, Barcelona!!

goats cheese and caramelised onion on a small tostada, the cutest mini burger you’ve ever seen and some vegetarian paella, all washed down with a glass of cava! The San Miguel market is open from 10am till midnight on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and from 10am till 2am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. When the capital of Spain was transferred from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, King Felipe II wanted a cathedral for his new capital. Plans were discussed to build a cathedral dedicated to the Virgin of Almudena but construction did not begin until 1879! Construction ceased during the Spanish civil war and did not resume until 1950. The cathedral was not completed until 1993, when it was consecrated by Pope John Paul II. The building is situated opposite the Royal Palace and was originally designed in a Gothic style but was later adapted to a more Baroque exterior. Inside it has a bright Neo-Gothic style with chapels and statues of contemporary artists. Entrance to the cathedral is free

The hotel’s location was amazing, right in the centre of the city and within walking distance from all the main attractions. Here is what we managed to squeeze into our 2 days....... The Museo del Prado is the main Spanish national art museum and features one of the world’s finest collections of European art from the 12th century to the early 19th century. El Prado is one of the most visited sites in the world and is considered to be among the greatest museums of art. Established in 1819 the collection comprises of around 7,600 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 4,800 prints and 8,200 drawings in addition to other works of art and historic documents. The artist most extensively represented is Goya and perhaps the best known work on display is Las Meninas by Velázquez, who was the leading artist in the court of King Philip IV and one of the most important painters of the Spanish Golden Age. The museum is open from Monday to Saturday 10am - 8pm and Sundays and holidays from 10am - 7pm and tickets are 14 euro. The San Miguel market is a must for anyone visiting Madrid! Situated in the very centre of the city, just across from the main square, Plaza Mayor, it is a traditional market originally opened in 1916. It is the only iron structured market surviving to the present day and was closed in 2004 for a complete refurbishment. The market was reinvented as a totally modern venue, reopening its doors in 2009. This indoor market is a food lover’s dream with 33 stalls offering a broad variety of Spanish delicacies and tapas. You can do your daily shop, go to enjoy a meal, snack or even an alcoholic beverage or maybe take part in various activities and exhibitions. We went for a late breakfast which consisted of various tapas, including

champagne, guitar riffs, husky vocals and even bull fighting debates. It survived the Spanish civil war but eventually closed in the sixties, reopened as a discotheque in the eighties and then again as a flamenco tablao in 2011. The room was slightly bigger than I thought, holding about 250 people if full, but still not too big! There was simply a musician, a singer and three flamenco dancers seated on chairs on a raised stage. The dancers, one male and two female took turns to dance solo for anything up-to 10 minutes each, you could literally see the sweat flying off the dancers into the audience, blood, sweat and tears and such emotions clearly visible in their faces and bodies as they feel the rhythm and let it take control and lose themselves in their own world of flamenco!! The show lasts for about an hour, there are two shows nightly and prices start from 22 Euros for the show and drink. All this and we really only just touched the surface of Madrid, I look forward to returning one day to explore some more, and probably visit the San Miguel market again!!

but for only 6 euro you can also go to the cathedral’s museum which explains the history of the church and contains many artefacts from chalices and goblets to jewellery and robes that clearly show the riches and splendour that belong to the church, in contrast, the homeless beg and try to sell necklaces and wares outside the cathedral gates! From the museum you can also go up to the dome and enjoy a spectacular view of the city! The museum is open from Monday to Saturday from 10am - 2.30pm The Palacio Real de Madrid is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family but no longer their home, it is only used for state ceremonies. Built in the 18th century and inspired by sketches for the construction of the Louvre in Paris it is Neoclassical/ Baroque in style and is, of course, breathtakingly majestic, I felt quite at home lol!! Home to kings of Spain from Carlos III to Alfonso XIII, Madrid Royal Palace is now open to the public from 10am - 6pm and at only 12 euro (or free for members of the EU between 4 and 6pm) it is well worth a visit!!

You can wander the palace grounds and courtyard and parts of the former living quarters of the Royals. My favourite room was the throne hall, a rich red in colour with two red and gold thrones and featuring a ceiling painted by Tiepolo. Designed by Sabatini and with over 70 steps the main staircase is also very impressive (as are all the rooms really, particularly the dining room!!). Madrid comes alive after dark – no one would think of going out dancing before 2am. The nightlife really is unique - there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. There are always places where you can go out, dance,

laugh, talk, flirt... In Madrid, going out at night is a fountain of culture. There is something for everybody: from the most minimalist chill out bars to the most enticing clubs and Goth bars, from the questionable dives to the wildest afterhours clubs and nostalgic dancehalls. One evening we went to Villa Rosa to watch and enjoy a real flamenco show!! Located in the centre of Madrid and first opened as a “tablao” (a venue at which flamenco is typically witnessed) in 1911, Villa Rosa was famous for locals, foreigners and even the monarchy to enjoy a night of flamenco,

Humans are not of this world a u.s. ECoLoGIsT has claimed that humans are not from Earth but were put on the planet by aliens tens of thousands of years ago. he suggests in his book “humans are not From Earth: a scientific Evaluation of The Evidence” that neanderthals such as homo erectus were crossbred with another species, perhaps from alpha Centauri, which is the closest star system to our solar system, some 4.37 light years away from the sun.

‘My thesis proposes that mankind did not evolve from that particular strain of life, but evolved elsewhere and was transported to Earth (as fully evolved Homo sapiens) between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago,’ he says. Dr Ellis Silver points to a number of physiological features to make his case for why humans did not evolve alongside other life on Earth, in his new book. He reasons that humans suffer from bad backs because we evolved in a world with lower gravity, cites many other indicators such as getting too easily sunburned and having difficulty giving birth. He says that it is strange that babies’ heads are so large and make it difficult for women to give birth, which can result in fatalities of the mother and infant. No other native species on this planet has this problem, he says.

He claims that while the planet meets humans’ needs for the most part, it does not perhaps serve the species’ interests as well as the aliens who dropped us off may have thought. ‘Mankind is supposedly the most highly developed species on the planet, yet is surprisingly unsuited and ill-equipped for Earth’s environment: harmed by sunlight, a strong dislike for naturally occurring foods, ridiculously high rates of chronic disease, and more’. He also believes humans are not designed to be as exposed to the sun as they are on Earth, as they cannot sunbathe for more than a week or two – unlike a lizard – and cannot be exposed to the sun every day without problems. Dr Ellis also claims humans are always ill and this might be because our body clocks have evolved to expect a 25 hour day, as proven by sleep researchers. ‘This is not a modern condition; the same factors can be traced all the way back through mankind’s history on Earth,’ he says. Dr Ellis also claims that many people feel that they don’t belong and feel at home on Earth. ‘This suggests (to me at least) that mankind may have evolved on a different planet, and we may have been brought here as a highly developed species. One reason for this … is that the Earth might be a prison planet, since we seem to be a naturally violent species and we’re here until we learn to behave ourselves.’

Kaufman Alive? Batfleck May Get A Robin

Andy Kaufman, standup comedian, practical joker, hoaxer, star of the sitcom “Taxi” and the subject of the Jim Carrey movie “ Man On The Moon”, supposedly died back in 1984 due to complications from lung cancer, but last week at the Andy Kaufman Comedy Awards in New York, his brother Michael announced that Andy was very much alive and promptly invited his daughter onto the stage to prove it. Michael claims that back in ‘84, whilst sorting through Andy’s belongings, he came across the comic’s elaborate plans to fake his own death. Andy, who was best known

for playing the strange East European immigrant Latka in Taxi, had written that he would use “transcendental meditation” to fake his own death, but would return in 1999, naming a restaurant where he would reappear. Michael claims he went to the restaurant and was delivered a letter from Andy who said he was in hiding as

he had fallen in love, that he had a daughter and just wanted a normal life. He also requested that Michael keep his secret until their father passed away. A month after their father died last summer, Michael received a call from a young woman who claimed that she was Andy’s daughter and that her father was alive and well. Onstage at the awards the shy 24 year old claimed that Andy was “a stay at home dad” and that he enjoyed watching the Andy Kaufman Comedy Awards from a distance. So the question remains, is the eccentric comic really still with us or is this just another one of his infamous practical jokes, delivered from beyond the grave with the help of his brother and an anonymous woman?

Now the internet and geekverse has had time to get used to the idea of Ben Affleck as a grizzled, world weary and older Batman, rumours and clues about the plot are starting to emerge. The latest titbit circulating the net is in this latest movie version of the DC comics legendary superhero, we may get to see Robin, or more accurately, Nightwing.

“Girls” star Adam Driver is currently the hot favourite to play Dick Grayson. Warner Brothers are keeping their cards close to their chest regarding storyline, but if the rumours are correct, Grayson will be Batman’s former sidekick Robin, who hasn’t spoken to the Caped Crusader in years and fights crime alone under the guise of Nightwing. Apparently the studios are looking for “a young John Hawkes type”, a description that suits Driver perfectly. Although the actor is supposed to be the hot favourite there are a couple of other contenders including Ezra Miller (“we need to talk

about Kevin”) and Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgely. There is also a lot of talk about Supe’s arch villain Lex Luthor making an appearance, with both Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and Brit baldie Mark Strong named as strong possibilities.

How I Met Your Dad Gets Green Light

Predictable cash in or giving fans more of what they want? As the 9th and final season of “How I Met Your Mother” draws nearer to its finale and conclusion, CBS has announced that it has ordered a pilot episode of a spinoff series - “How I Met Your Dad” from the original

Thor: The Dark World Showing daily at 17:30 hr - 112 min Action/Adventure/Fantasy Rated 7 Starring Chris Hemsworth - Thor Natalie Portman - Jane Foster Anthony Hopkins - Odin Information Correct at time of going to press. Check our Facebook page or contact the cinema for further information.

Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

series creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas.

The network claims the spinoff would be a kindred spirit to the original show, a female centric version, but said they would not be introducing the new cast in the final episodes of “himym”, claiming it would be a standalone show. The announcement has drawn equal amounts of

cheers and groans, especially as the final season of the parent show isn’t its best. No doubt the network, not wanting to lose its ratings topper completely, is hoping the new show has plenty of “connective tissue” such as locations like Mclaren’s Bar, recurring minor characters and I’m sure they’ll be angling for the odd appearance by some of the originals main stars!

ThE latest version of samsung’s Galaxy smartphone could have a threesided display, if rumours are true. The new handset, which arrives in 2014, may integrate a wrap-around display so that the curved screen can be read from most angles. samsung sells around one in three luxury handsets, and lead the race along with apple’s iPhone in smartphone technology, the curved screen version could be a real coup for samsung.

The sleek, curvy model may either launch an entire-

ly new line or will feature on Samsung’s Galaxy S or Note luxury handsets, the wraparound design eliminates dead space at the side of a handset, meaning a larger display without a wider phone, they be more comfortable in the hand and the screens easier to read. Some design concepts illustrate command buttons positioned on the side of handset screens - as well as caller ID and tickertape style rolling news. By making use of the side of handsets for pop-up alerts, multitasking would be made far easier. Samsung has already

shown off curved screens at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and has used a flexible display for its Galaxy Gear smartwatch, as well as in a design for spectacles similar to Google Glass, that will be able to answer calls. No release date has been announced yet for the next generation device, but a launch in the second half of 2014 seems most likely. Sources believe each side of the display could operate independently, which could make for a radical new experience for a smartphone user.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

MOAN MOAN MOAN

If there is one thing that the British are famous for throughout the world it is their ability to moan. The Australians refer to us as “whinging poms” and they are probably right.

If you take a listen to what people are saying in shops or in the street, you will invariably find that they are giving their opinions of something that they aren’t happy with. If we find that there is nothing to moan about we have an automatic relay switch in our brains that reverts back to the subject of the weather which enables us to moan about that. I have found that it is better to say hello to people without asking them how they are because you will end up listening to a list of medical problems and medications that they have been supplied with that they don’t think they really need. Airports and hotels are full of professional whiners. When you see people checking in, just take a listen. “The room isn’t clean”, “we are too high up”, “this hotel has gone down since last year”, “I don’t like Spanish bacon”, “It’s too hot”, “It’s too cold” etc etc etc! Sometimes I wonder why people bother to come on

holiday but then I console myself with the answer that they do it so that they can have a good moan to people that they have never met before and then at the end of the holiday they swap phone numbers and forget that they had ever met in the first place! Here are ten mindless things that people have moaned about on holiday according to ABTA.

1. “I think it should be explained in the brochure that the local store does not sell proper biscuits like custard creams or ginger nuts.” 2. “On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.” 3. A woman threatened to call police after claiming that she’d been locked in by staff. When in fact, she had mis-

taken the “do not disturb” sign on the back of the door as a warning to remain in the room. 4. “The beach was too sandy.” 5. “We bought ‘Ray-Ban’ sunglasses for five Euros from a street trader, only to find out they were fake.” 6. “No-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled.” 7. “The brochure stated: ‘No hairdressers at the accommodation’. We’re trainee hairdressers - will we be OK staying there?” 8. “There are too many Spanish people. The receptionist speaks Spanish. The food is Spanish. Too many foreigners now live abroad.” 9. “We had to queue outside with no air conditioning.” 10. “My fiancé and I booked a twin-bedded room but we were placed in a double-bedded room. We now hold you responsible for the fact that I find myself pregnant. This would not have happened if you had put us in the room that we booked.” So, after reading that little lot, maybe we should engage brain before starting out on a rant! An even better idea would be to get through a whole day without moaning once. Give it a try and see if you are successful. Be positive folks ... life is fun!

Sign Of The Times

I love this sign that comes from the States. Might be a good idea to put it up in a few of the residential complexes here!

The funniest sign I have seen here read “La cerveza en este bar es mas fria que el culo de un pinguino” which in English means “The beer in this bar is colder than a penguin’s arse”. On that little note I will leave you in peace!

Mystery Mail

No Peace For Michael Jackson

Quincy Jones has decided to sue the Michael Jackson estate for ten million dollars. When I read this story I was saddened. It just seems that there has been a never ending stream of legal action since he died in 2009. Having said that, his life was also full of lawsuits and criminal accusation.

It is such a shame that such a talented person courted continuous bad media attention. When you look back at him as a child, singing with his brothers, you can’t help but marvel at his incredible voice and self confidence. Quincy Jones obviously feels that he is owed the money and so the case will no doubt go ahead but one can’t help wondering what is lurking around the corner next!

Some things should be left alone. The mystery post box that appeared on the arch of a bridge over the Thames is a great talking piece but once again someone in an office has decided that it should be taken down. Why? Very few people are going to thing it ios anything but a joke and anyone who does think it is real is unlikely to be able to get close enough to it to post a letter.

There are photographs of this otherwise unknown bridge all over the internet and it has even been talked about on television. It that street artist they call Banksy had painted it onto the bridge, the would have left it there because it would have been worth millions. There is nothing wrong with a bit of British eccentricity. I say leave it there and it would become a tourist attraction. I do wish that these local authorities would lighten up and chill out. I think it’s great and would my photograph in front of it, just to say that I had been there!

u.S. Crushes 6 Chinese man tons of ivory Sends £900k gift to future wife

a ChInEsE man has showered his fiancé with baskets and boxes of cash totalling 8, 888,888m yuan (£900,000), and weighing more than 102kg. the significance of the amount of number 8s in the amount sIX tons of ivory, representing the killing of 2,000 adult elephants, has been destroyed in a drive against the illegal trade.

Thousands of items including jewellery, carvings and whole tusks and have accumulated over the past 25 years after a global ban on the ivory trade took place in 1989. Officials showed off thousands of confiscated tusks, statues, ceremonial bowls, masks and ornaments that were seized from smugglers, traders and tourists at US ports, before they were piled into a large mound, and dumped into a steel rock crusher and pulverised into dust at the National Wildlife Property Repository outside Denver. The US Fish and Wildlife Service will donate

the particles to a yet-to-be determined museum for display. Agency director Dan Ashe said: “These stockpiles of ivory fuel the demand. We need to crush the stores of ivory worldwide.” Secretary of State John Kerry announced a $1m (£620,000) reward on Wednesday for information leading to the dismantling of a Laos-based criminal syndicate - the Xaysavang Network - which he said poaches elephants for their ivory. In a statement, the State Department said the group kills elephants to fund narcotics, arms and human trafficking. Blackmarket ivory sells for around £810 ($1,300) per pound. The British-based Born Free Foundation estimates that poachers killed 32,000 elephants last year, mostly in Africa.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

The Poinsettia Is A Flower For Christmas In Tenerife we are lucky enough to have poinsettias growing here in many gardens, parks and even along roadsides. They form large bushes too and you cannot miss them because of their bright red bracts.

Yes, the red parts are bracts which are specialised leaves and not petals and the flowers are actually quite small and insignificant. The poinsettia is known to botanists as Euphorbia pulcherrima which means the “most beautiful Spurge.” The poinsettia is indeed a member of the vast Euphorbiaceae or Spurge family which has species in a very varied number of forms. There are Euphorbia species that look like cacti but are technically succulents, there are euphorbias that grow into large bushes, there are some types that form trees and there are yet more that look like normal leafy plants. The one think all the spurges share though is a white sap that bleeds out of the plants if cut and which is generally toxic. The poinsettia has this white juice that shows what group of plants it belongs to. In the north of the island you will often encounter large bushes of it and they

start to have their beautiful displays of colour from November onward. In many parts of the world, including Tenerife, poinsettias are grown from cuttings and sold as pot-plants as well as being used in seasonal floral displays. The bright red colouring matches the outfit that Santa Claus wears and the colour of holly berries which are also a big part of the traditional Christmas decorations. Look out for poinsettias planted in special Christmas designs and displays. You can’t miss them with the almost glowing red of their bracts!

Another plant in the same genus as the poinsettia that can be seen all around Tenerife is the crown of thorns (E.milii). Like the poinsettia it has red bracts around its flowers and white sap in its stems. The crown of thorns though is a much smaller shrub and is a succulent with very spiny stems, hence its name. It is said that it might have been the crown of thorns that Jesus was forced to wear though this doesn’t make that much sense seeing as the plant was originally from Madagascar. Whatever the case, the crown of thorns adds to the

Facts about the Poinsettia

seasonal colour in the gardens and flower borders of Tenerife. Of course, winter comes as a gift for the many plants, trees and shrubs of the island that benefit from the heavy rains we get at this time of the year. The island really becomes luxuriant with all the water that revives the parched ground. Tiny seedlings spring to life and vegetation that was brown becomes green again! Whilst in the UK most plants die back or drop their leaves in Tenerife many are looking at their best at this time of the year. Some plants like the Canary candle shrub (Senecio kleinia) produce new leaves and flowers in the late autumn and winter months. This unusual succulent shrub gets it name because it grows in the form of a candelabrum with fleshy jointed stems that look a bit like candles. Canary candle shrub grows wild on waste ground and dry and rocky parts along the coast but is happy in the shrub border and as a garden plant too. It is often cultivated for its ornamental qualities. In winter when the plant has gone to seed it has large clumps of snowy-white fluffy seeds. They are carried by the wind just like those of

the dandelion. It is actually a very distant relation because the Canary candle shrub and the dandelion are both in the family known as the Asteraceae which is also called the Compositae. Many other plants including roses, bougainvilleas, bird of paradise flowers and pelargoniums continue flowering right through the winter months ensuring plenty of floral colour throughout the season. But it isn’t just the plants that have festive colour. The scarlet darter dragonfly (Crocthemis erythraea) is very common around the island. It frequents the areas around garden pools but also is happy to breed in the reservoirs and irrigation tanks that are present on many farms. As its name suggests this insect is coloured a bright scarlet red and matches Father Christmas’s traditional clothing and the colours of the poinsettia, crown of thorns and holly berries. It a dragonfly that wears Festive Season colours all year around. If we are lucky and the weather is ‘normal’ we may well have had enough rain to have fallen as snow on higher ground. Mt Teide often has a gleaming coating of white snow on its peak in late De-

Scarlet Darter cember making it one place you can go to see a truly white Christmas! The snow that falls on Mt Teide will of course melt and provide water for all the unique plants that grow up there.

The poinsettia is named after Joel Roberts Poinsett who was the first United States Minister to Mexico. He introduced the plant to America in 1825. • The Aztecs used to use the plant to make a red dye. • The bracts of the poinsettia in certain varieties can also be pink, white, cream, pale green or orange. • In Mexico, where the shrub grows wild in forested areas, the poinsettia is known as “Noche Buena,” meaning Christmas Eve. • 12 December is National Poinsettia Day in the United States.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

“Our attitudes to the horsemeat trade and the value of horsemeat may have to change,” the Princess said at the annual conference in central London. She told delegates that in France a fillet of horsemeat was the most expensive meat in local butchers. “If that’s true then, that they value their horses, they look after them well, because they’re in the horsemeat trade ... should we be considering a real market for horsemeat and would that reduce the number of welfare cases if there was a real value in the horsemeat sector? I chuck that out for what it’s worth because I think it needs a debate.” The main problem concerning the recent horsemeat scandal was that food was improperly labelled, and consumers were unaware of what they had been eating, rather than the use of the animal in products, she claimed; “We’ve got to face that,” she said. “We’ve got to understand whether that value has also a part to play in how we reduce welfare cases. The value of the animal to every individual is slightly different, but if it has real financial value then you look a little bit further ahead in the way you look

after your animals.” The horsemeat scandal first began earlier this year in January, when frozen burgers supplied to several supermarkets including Tesco were found to contain horse DNA. Investigations

found other beef products sold by retailers including lasagne and spaghetti bolognese were contaminated and meals in schools and hospitals had to be withdrawn after it was found they also contained horse meat.

Slow cooker ideas…. The Slow cooker Air Freshener!

Turn your slow cooker into an air freshener, make your kids play dough or even homemade candles… it’s all here! There is a use for that useless appliance that you bought and never use after all!

There’s some different recipes for you to try. All of them follow the same method, just use whatever ingredients you prefer!

Here’s the method for it:

Fill the slow cooker half full with water and then add the ingredients from your favourite recipe.Allow it to simmer away with the lid off, adding more water if needed.

Recipe #1 Recipe #2 Recipe #3 Cinnamon sticks Apple peels Orange rinds Whole cloves

Peel from 1 lemon A few drops vanilla Peel from 1 orange Orange peels 2 bay leaves 3 cinnamon sticks 2 Tablespoons whole cloves

Play dough

Directions:

Ingredients:

Plug in your slow cooker and turn it to low to warm up slowly. Put in your dry ingredients, stirring to evenly distribute. Add the water and oil. Close the lid and switch the heat to high. Set a timer and check your play dough every 30 minutes, stirring well each time. Mine was done after a half hour! But others could take up to 2, depending on the size of your slow cooker.

270g plain flour 135g corn flour 200g salt 50g cream of tartar 270ml hot water 2 tbsp. cooking oil

You will know it’s done or close to done when the play dough begins to form a ball when you stir it. When that happens, remove the stoneware insert from your slow cooker and stir some more. Dump it out onto a smooth surface and begin to knead----be careful---- it’s going to be hot. If your dough is overly sticky, add a bit of corn flour; if overly dry, add a touch more hot water. Each time you make the dough, the water required will be a bit different, depending on the humidity in the air. Separate the dough into manageable lumps and push a hole into the centre for a few drops of food colouring. Squish the dough around to distribute the desired colour.

Candles in The Slow cooker All you need is some wax, some wicks + wick bases, and some candle-holders. You can buy these online or from any good high street retailer. Make them in shot glasses and if you prefer add some scented oil to them.

Method:

Spoon the pieces of wax into your candle holders and arrange them in the bottom of the slow cooker. Don’t overcrowd and definitely don’t stack! Turn the machine to high, cover, and go do something else. 20-30 minutes later you can check back. Your wax will probably be melted and you’ll probably notice your candles aren’t as full as you’d like. So carefully add more wax to each container. You may have to do this for a few rounds. When the candles are as full as you like and you’ve let them get good and hot and melted, it’s time to add the scented oil if you wish.Add your wicks. Carefully insert them and make sure they’re centered. They should stay straight up on their own, so don’t worry about that.Turn the slow cooker off. Leave it uncovered. Over the next few hours the wax will cool and harden. They’ll be hard enough to handle if you’d like to remove them after a few hours, but give them at least 6+ hours before you really move them around. They need plenty of time to harden fully.

New Cars May Be Prevented From Exceeding Speed Limit

The European Union might soon require manufacturers to fit cars with a system that prevents speeding, however, the Institute of Advanced Motorists has revealed in a survey that seventy-five percent of drivers believe that Intelligent Speed Adaptation technology could ‘compromise safety’ and not ‘have a positive impact’ on safety.

The majority does not want it to be compulsory in newly manufactured motors or fitted to existing cars either. The Institute of Advanced Motorists also states that some people perceive benefits in producing cars that cannot exceed the speed limit, with fifty-two percent of the survey respondents claiming the technology could reduce of speeding convictions, as well as resulting in less government money being spent on traffic calming measures such as sleeping policeman and speed cameras. Thirty-one percent said that Intelligent Speed Adaptation technology should be reserved for young, newly qualified

W

drivers, and those with motoring related convictions such as speeding, etc. Preventative speeding technology could work in one of two ways. A forward-facing camera could monitor traffic signs as the car passes, e.g. limit thirty miles per-hour, or , satellites could note the vehicle’s position via GPS then transfer the speed limit to its computer, speed could then be controlled by limiting the throttle response, cutting engine power, or braking. The Ford Focus Mk3 already has a camera behind the windscreen which monitors roadside traffic signs, transferring the images to the dashboard. Also,

the Mercedes-Benz CLS has a speed limiter that can be manually configured. Such systems would simply need to be automated so that the driver’s input is controlled when speeding above the legal limit is attempted. Motorists need to be assured that such a system is reliable, and wouldn’t increase the cost of new vehicles. If fitted to every new car the motoring world is taking another step towards the self-driving vehicles of the future. Today’s cars can already change gear, maintain speed via cruise control, and brake automatically; soon cars may not need drivers at all.

Stonehenge: Walking Through History Editor Channel 4 - 20:00 - 21:00

Tony robinson returns for a new three-part series of Walking Through history, embarking on more spectacular walks through some of Britain’s most historic landscapes in search of the richest stories from our past.

In this first episode, Tony heads off for a 45mile walk across Wiltshire to tell the story of life and death in the last centuries of the Stone Age. His route over chalk downlands and Salisbury plain takes him through the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites in Europe. From Avebury to

41

Stonehenge and from spirituality to engineering, this is a journey through our ancestors’ remarkable development in the latter days of the Neolithic Age. Windmill Hill near Avebury is the start of his route; with earthworks dating to 4500BC, it’s one of the most ancient sites in Wiltshire. From here, Tony moves on through 2000 years of the ‘New Stone Age’, encountering increasingly complex burial sites and processional routes that have helped make this area both captivating and intriguing. As he heads south Tony can’t escape the eccentric characters and weird phenomena that have accompanied Wiltshire’s ancient history.

Tales from Northumberland with Robson Green ITV 1 - 20:00 - 20:30 Episode five sees robson explore northumberland’s unique traditions including coble fishermen, northumbrian folk music, and the history behind the county’s distinctive dialect.

For a small band of Northumbrian fisherman, the traditional wooden coble is much more than just a boat; it’s a way of life with origins dating back to the 10th century. Said to be inspired by Viking longboats, the coble is unique to the north east. In the mid-twentieth century, hundreds of fishermen set out each morning to seek out salmon, sea trout and lobster. Whole towns were

Robson learns how, over the past twenty years, changing fishing regulations and technology have seen more and more fishermen opt for modern boats. There are now less than twenty coble fishermen left in Northumberland. Robson visits the fishing port of Amble to meet one of them. Kevin Henderson’s family have been fishing out of Amble since the 1860s. Robson heads out on the coble to see what they can catch and, after a hard day at sea, Robson takes control of the boat.

Channel 4 - 21:00 - 22:00 The award-winning series, filmed round the clock at King’s College hospital in south London, continues with an episode that focuses on the strong bonds within families and the challenge of breaking bad news.

Bill, who’s 92, arrives at King’s with breathing difficulties and a swollen leg. He’s accompanied by his stepdaughter Jo. As he’s treated, doctors suspect the shortness of breath and swelling could be due to a clot and send him for X-rays. But the test results suggest there may be something more seriously wrong. Meanwhile, Bill talks about reaching his

45

nineties and his strong bond with his stepdaughter. Andy comes into King’s with stomach cramps. The 45-year-old had a liver transplant ten years ago and, as doctors investigate the cause of his discomfort, Andy reflects on living with someone else’s liver, growing up in the East End, his time as a punk living in a squat in Waterloo and his career with the Royal Navy. Sarah, who’s 25, has been finding it hard to stand up and has been brought into King’s by her mum and grandfather. Sarah has learning difficulties as a result of an inherited genetic disorder. Her dad died from the same condition when she was just seven.

ronaldo’s Hat-trick Qualifier

CrIsTIano ronaldo scored a hat-trick as Portugal qualified for their fourth straight FIFa World Cup, with a 3-2 play-off second leg win against sweden to qualify 4-2 on aggregate. The real Madrid superstar scored every goal for his country, including the firstleg winner as he triumphed against Zlatan Ibrahimovic, also on amazing form at solna.

Ibrahimovic scored both goals for Sweden as the match featured five goals in 29 minutes of thrilling second-half action. Ronaldo also equalled Portugal’s all-time scoring record as he joined retired forward Pedro Pauleta on 47 international goals. With the match scoreless at half-time, Ronaldo turned up the heat five minutes after the restart when he latched onto a glorious through ball from Joao Moutinho and guided a leftfoot shot past the despairing goalkeeper, Andreas Isaksson. The counter-attack that

began inside the Portuguese penalty area, just two touches sent the former Sporting Lisbon and Manchester United striker free, on a break that went the length of the pitch. Sweden were left facing prospect of having to score three times in 40 minutes. Swedish supporters went wild when Ibrahimovic headed home Kim Kallstrom’s corner with 22 minutes remaining. The crowd remained optimistic four minutes later when referee Howard Webb awarded Sweden a free-kick just outside the area which Ibrahimovic drilled low past Rui Patricio. With Sweden bombarding the Portuguese defence, Ronaldo came to the rescue spectacularly, with two goals in two minutes, both clinical finishes after breaking behind the defence. Hugo Almeida set up Portugal’s third goal before another perfect pass from Moutinho enabled Ronaldo to smash the ball past the Swedish goalkeeper. The final whistle went with Portugal heading to Brazil next summer to grace the world stage with Ronaldo elated after grabbing all four goals across both legs.

boos fail to thwart Stu

sTuarT Broad soon silenced the boos from the australia crowd with five wickets as England seized control on the opening day of the first ashes Test. australia coach darren Lehmann had accused Broad of cheating during the summer’s ashes - and said he hoped the public would get stuck into him down under, a wish granted by the aussie fans. a local newspaper in Brisbane,

had dubbed the England all-rounder ‘stuart Fraud,’ but superb play from Broad was all he needed to do to silence his accusers. Broad picked up both wickets to fall in the morning, dismissing Chris Rogers (one) with the first ball of his second over when the left-handed opener could only fend to Ian Bell at gully. He then struck again just before lunch, ending a promising second-wicket stand of 59 when he had Shane Watson caught by a diving Graeme Swann at second slip. Warner

had looked more assertive, delighting the home faithful by hitting Broad’s opening delivery of the series for the first of his six boundaries. The left-hander also found the rope to bring up the home side’s half-century, lofting spinner Swann back over his head. Yet he was part of a shocking collapse after the interval that was triggered by the loss of captain Clarke, a Broad short ball getting him in all sorts of trouble and resulting in him looping a catch straight up to Bell at short leg. The England skipper also clung on to a comfortable chance to see the back of Steven Smith for 31, giving Tremlett his first Test scalp since July 2011 and leaving Haddin to battle on with only the lower order for company. Although the Australian faithful in Brisbane rose to the challenge, so did Broad as he finished with 5-65 to leave the hosts struggling at 273-8. Australia’s Mitchell Johnson believes they are still in the game after a tough opening day in the first Ashes Test.

messi wins third golden boot

BarCELona forward Lionel Messi won a record third Golden Boot, the first ever player to receive the award three times, on Wednesday for scoring the most goals in Europe’s domestic leagues last season. he also won the award for 34 goals in 2009-10, and a spanish record 50 in 2011-12.

The 26-year-old scored 46 goals helping Barcelona win the 2012-13 Spanish league, despite missing several games with a right hamstring injury near the end of the season. Messi dedicated his latest trophy to his family and his teammates, calling it a team award. “This is a beautiful award that goes to the entire squad for what it has done,” Messi said. “It is a group award more than an individual one because those are a lot of goals. I wouldn’t have won it without them, this one or the previous ones.” Messi is recovering from a left hamstring tear that will probably keep him sidelined for the rest of 2013. It was his third leg injury of the season. Before his latest injury, he had eight goals in 11 league appearances. Messi added that his leg was feeling better while remaining cautious about rushing back. Messi has won the world player of the year award an unprecedented four years in a row. He is again nominated this year, but he has tough competition from Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery. Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer, Messi’s

65 goals in the Champions League is second to former Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez’s 71.

Froch v Groves Gets Nasty

The pre-fight press conference showed the shape of things to come as Carl Froch mocked George Groves’ attempts to reveal his game-plan, the sparring of words began.

Groves tried to fire up Froch when the two fighters came face-to-face ahead of their world title fight this Saturday, the 25-year-old challenger played mind games by telling the champion how he plans to take his titles in Manchester. “Carl keeps saying that I’m lying as such, I’m not confident when I say I’m confident. I’m not ready when I say I’m ready,” said Groves. “I think he believes I’m going to get in there and run from him, but Carl you’re wrong, I’m going to come out, I’m going to meet you centre of the ring first round and I’m going to win the jab exchanges and I’m going to hit you with two right hands,

just two, just to let you know whenever I want, I can hit you with a right hand. Second round I’m going to come out and I’m going to do the same. I’m going to take the centre of the ring, I’m going to win the jab exchanges and I’m going to hit him with more right hands. Third round I’m going to come out and push him back. I’m going to push him on his back foot. After the third round Carl, you’re going to see what happens next. It’s all down to you from there.” Froch was not in the least bit intimidated by his opponent’s showboating, admitting he expects the opposite when they step into the ring. “Well I’m very surprised that he’s come up with that little game-plan in a short space of time,” said the WBA and IBF super-middleweight champion. He’s going to come to the centre of the ring and he’s going to hit me with two rights, was it two right hands? The first one’s not going to do any damage, so he’s going to hit me with

another one and I’m going to sit there and let him do that. My experience at top level, my punching power and George Groves’ lack of ability to be able to take a punch is going to be the reason why he’s not going to do what he said he’s going to do. He’s going to come in the ring and run for his life, jab and grab and try and get through it. He’s not going to stand and fight.” Carl Froch is tipped to beat his old rival George Groves in the big fight on Saturday night. “I’ve come here today to do him a favour and tell him exactly what I’m going to do. I hope on fight night Carl you take my good advice. You make some adjustments towards it,” said Groves. Froch replied: “You’ve embarrassed yourself and on Saturday night I’m going to get a chance to put it right and trust me on Saturday night you’re in a world of trouble and you are going to learn some respect.”

Seabass To Return To Aintree

Aintree regular Seabass could return to Merseyside next month as trainer Ted Walsh looks to give the 2012 Grand National third his first run of the winter campaign. A lack of suitable oppor-

tunities in his native Ireland has prompted Walsh to think of taking the 10-year-old back to Liverpool for either the Becher or Grand Sefton Chase on December 7. “He could go back to Aintree on December 7. There are two races there, the Becher and the Grand Sefton,” Walsh told At The

GobSmacked!

Races. He might go in the Sefton over two-miles-five there in Liverpool. There are not a lot of opportunities for him here. He’s a 154 or 155-rated horse. He’d be top weight in a handicap, but not good enough for a Grade Two or Grade Three so he might go back to Liverpool. It’s a valuable pot.”

Amy Williams in her own words was “gobsmacked”, at finishing 26th overall at the Wales Rally GB

The Winter Olympic champion and partner Tony Jardine, joined forces just two months ago, finishing 26th overall and first in class on the fourth and final day of the British round of the World Rally Championship. And Williams said: “We were gobsmacked about coming 26th, it was amazing. It was the final day, we just had problems thrown at us all the time, and it was really testing. To come 26th and first in our class it was just something I thought would never happen. Tony’s been brilliant. He’s been patient with me, he’s taught me as much as possible, he’s brought in the best team around us. So I’ve had the best people around me in these last few months trying to get through the different national rallies to be able to compete at World Rally GB.The whole process has been amazing, learning how another sport works. The whole

rallying community has really welcomed me and I’ve really enjoyed it.” In 2010 Williams won skeleton gold at the Vancouver Winter Olympics, becoming the first British gold medallist in an individual event at the Winter Olympics for 30 years. Skeleton racing is a fast winter sliding sport, in which an individual person rides a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down, and the 31-year-old claims rallying isn’t too different. “I think there’s a lot of transfer across from skeleton. I think number one, as an athlete, you’re very good at realising what you need to do to improve yourself and you’re willing to work really hard to push yourself to learn and step up your game. From skeleton my aim was to get down the track as fast as you can, to the limit between crashing/not crashing, and finding every single hundredth/tenth of a second. The rallying’s the same, trying to get through each stage as fast as possible. That complete trust and communication between the two of you.”

the SportS SCene By Colin Kirby

IT Wasn´T as easy as the 3-0 score suggests but Cd Marino stuck to their task to see off an impressive realejos team. Coach sosa Espinel tightened up the defence bringing Mendy into the centre and he got better as the game went on. The lowly visitors were competitive in midfield and broke well with armiche dictating the play, this was going to be a tough nut to crack.

Pulido found early room down the right, within five minutes he had Coper heading away his cross as it caused chaos in the goalmouth. Ar-

miche came close at the other end, his shot was just wide but Matias in the goal had it covered. Realejos put the squeeze on Marino by playing the offside trap, the ref and linesmen joined in the plan with plenty of early calls, several borderline at best. Santi tried to go through the middle of the blue defence but Mendy stayed tight on him and gave no change. The biggest threat came down Marino´s left, Guti was through and away, thankfully Matias judged it well and put out his foot to deflect the ball wide. Murci was having a frustrating time up front for Marino, he clashed with the keeper in the area and went down but the ref decided they were equally at fault and resisted the penalty claim. Josito

Horseshoes and trainers above las Vistas beach For a saturday stroll with a difference get along to Montana Chayofita on 23 november at 1pm. It’s that small volcanic mound that looks down over Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos, a popular viewpoint for nimble feet but this time a parade of horses will also enjoy the short trek.

Sortija & Carrera will be an interesting combination of people and animals as they take the track just above the ring road that connects Playa de Las Americas with Los Cristianos.

fared little better; a weak shot at the goalie was always heading for his hand. Patience is one of the many virtues that Marino have added this season and their reward came in the 75th minute, a quickly taken free kick left Murci’s boot like a rocket and left the defence and goalie rooted to the spot. Aaron Darias came on for the home side and added skill and urgency on the left, a great run and well measured cross was gratefully headed into the net by Murci and at 2-0 Marino were not to be caught. The closing act was a soft penalty as keeper Gil made contact with Balduino, the forward inflicted further punishment by firing the ball over the diving keeper. That puts Marino back into fourth place with a trip to La Laguna this weekend.

Numancia Is A Cold Comfort Zone For CD Tenerife

A fifth game without defeat, well it takes a lot to shake CD Tenerife these days, even the sub zero temperatures at Numancia couldn’t prevent them from bringing home a valuable 0-0 draw.

There was an extra warm glow for Tenerife fans to see former relegation flops Natalio and Julio Alvarez freezing their bits off, Alvarez first half shot that nearly hit the corner flag will be on constant video replay for many who recall these overpaid, over rated recruits. But let’s dwell on more pleasant matters, gap filling was needed with Rigo covering for the injured central defender Bruno, and Borja Perez again standing in for the injured Aridane, both did a great job. Rigo making his seasonal debut slotted in nicely and with the pressure on at the end of the game made three commanding clearances. Borja has haunted my dreams for weeks but playing as the target man he gave and received plenty of stick, allowing the more skillful Ayoze room to turn the full

back inside out. There were a couple of early jitters as the Tenerife defence settled but goalie Roberto took the lead with total control of his area and the confidence spread. Ayoze fired a warning across the home goal from the left then popped up on the right to force a corner. Borja dug in with two defenders to force a free kick that Loro curled wide, he went even closer a few minutes later with a screwed back shot inside the defence that came off the bar. Just before the break Ayoze found himself in a similar position to his wonder goal last week but it didn’t quite come off this time. Camara couldn’t head clear at the start of the second and home sub Paranca got a shot away, Roberto had to be at his best for that one. Loro was captain and leading by ex-

ample, he seems to have got his old fire back but should have done better with a free kick he launched straight into the wall. Paranca was looking dangerous and joined by fellow bench man Vicente they tested Tenerife further. There was one way to fight that, unleash Suso, he pinned Numancia back, Ayoze had a couple more decent chances but couldn’t convert them and Suso might have nicked the win with the last touch of the game if it had been fiercer for the keeper to handle. It was still a fine point to pick up and moved Tenerife another place up the table with Jaen at home this Sunday at 5pm. AYOZE WATCH – No goal but the Tenerife starlet was the main goal threat. Three more teams sent scouts to check him out, Villarreal, Sevilla, and Brighton.

The latest setback came at home to Joventut by 95 to 103, the unfancied side stunned the La Laguna squad by attacking from the off to take the first quarter 28-29 and followed up with a stunning 22-36, it was just too much to claw back from the half way point.

The team has now slipped to 7th in Spain’s elite ACB league but this Sunday they are home to Gipuzkoa at noon. FTEr last week’s 2-0 defeat against Chile, England disappointed once again on Tuesday, in their final friendly of 2013 ahead of the World Cup in Brazil next year.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, Joe Hart proved his worth after a number of quick decisions saved the score line from creeping up in the 39th minute, Mertesacker headed one past our defence as England struggled to clear their lines, scoring from Mario Gotze’s excellent cross from the right. England didn’t give Germany’s debut-making goalie Roman Weidenfeller much to worry about, with Andros Townsend’s effort in the 57th minute striking the post There was also disappointing behaviour in the stands too as some of England’s fans booed the German national anthem, but they were just a sad minority with most fans gave the home team sterling support from the first whistle, but the opening half-hour was an exercise boredom, as both teams cancelled each other out in midfield.

On the plus side, passing between defence and midfield was calm and controlled while Townsend caused Marcel Schmelzer problems with his pace. None of England’s attempts could hit the target though; a Rooney header ended up on the roof of the net and a Steven Gerrard volley flew skywards. Gerrard raised fans hopes just before half-time with a 30-yard shot which went just over Weidenfeller’s goal, but England were soon desperately trying to keep the Germans at bay, and defence was disorganised and lacklustre. England spurred back into action with Adam Lallana having a good go but Mertesacker squashed our hopes again. Townsend almost made it 1-1 but his shot hit the outside of Weidenfeller’s post. England could find no way through their back line and the visitors kept possession well. On the evidence of this performance, Hodgson’s team have a lot of work to do to tip the balance in England’s favour in time for Brazil.
