Everyone at Tenerife Weekly would like to wish our sports writer, Colin Kirby, the very best of luck for this weekend. He has decided to enter the hiking and kayaking event in aid of Fundación én Pie. Not exactly a recognised athlete, he is far better at writing about it, but he is giving it a go! I highly recommend that if you would like to watch him valiantly taking on “proper” athletes, you should get yourselves down there,

This week saw the return of the afternoon Tea Dance’s at Vivo, it was lovely to see some familiar faces, even better that there were some newbies! The event is ably run by professional dance teacher Beverley and Swallows coordinator Carol and their combined aim is to make sure everyone has a good time. Why not come down on Wednesday 23rd and try it out for yourselves? I had a fascinating time working on this week’s spread, a compilation of 100 inventions that have changed

our lives. Lists are usually as dull as ditch water, but I admit I spent a lot of my time exclaiming about how old things actually are. Had anything there been on a quiz, I would have failed miserably, I had no idea the Dyson vacuum cleaner was twenty years old this year, surely not, and what about the breathalyser, did you know it was invented in 1955? Check out the list on pages 28 and 29 and see what will surprise you.

See you all next week.

Work resumed on the island ring road section between Adeje and Santiago del Teide on Monday, but that doesn’t mean there is an opening date to complete, on the contrary now the opening of the various sub sections has been divided up.

First part into service will be from Chio to Tejina (over

the Erques Canyon). The reason for further delays? There is no more money to do anything else. There are only six million euros left for the remainder of this year, even though the budget made provision for 15 million euros. On Monday, Tenerife Cabildo president, Carlos Alonso, confirmed that work had begun and the idea was that “it would never again be brought to a standstill “. Alon-

so reminded reporters that a credit from regional government has allowed the works to continue, which will mean the stretch between Chio and Erques (60% of the southern tranche of the ring road) can be opened early next year. Meanwhile the unconnected completed parts of the road remain like a wasteland, used by many people for their morning run, or more famously appearing in Hollywood blockbusters.

T

he Spanish administration has passed a bill to reform the Traffic and Road Safety Law, increasing fines from 500 euros to 1,000 for driving under the effects of alcohol or drugs.

The bill, which will be sent now to the Congress of Deputies, would exempt drivers who have ingested drugs on a doctor’s orders. “There are people addicted to drugs who submit to rehabilitation programs and it is neither fair nor reasonable to forbid them from driving or to make them suspend their treatment”, said Interior Minister Jorge

Fernandez. The bill also would increase the maximum speed limit from 120 kilometres per hour to 130 kph on some stretches of highway. The reform is being proposed at a time when traffic accident fatalities in Spain dropped by 12% in 2012 to some 1,304 victims, a similar number to the 1960’s, said Fernandez. In 2012, 47.3% of fatal traffic accident victims tested positive for alcohol, drugs and psychoactive drugs, said Fernandez. The Spanish government expects Traffic and Road Safety Law reform to come into force in 2014.

The october fiesta season is kicking in; the next public will be on Monday, 14 October, a public holiday in Adeje, for the fiestas de Santa Úrsula. Further north, 21 October is a local holiday both in El Tanque for the fiesta del Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, and in Santa Ursula for Día de Santa Úrsula, and the 25th is a fiesta in Buenavista del Norte for the Festividad de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Apart from the local holidays, Saturday, 12 October, is a national holiday throughout the whole of Spain for the Día de la Hispanidad. The body of a woman was found early on Sunday morning, floating in the sea off Palm Mar. The poor woman was discovered by a leisure craft in the area, and the crew alerted emergency services. Little was known at first since she was in swimwear, had no documentation on her. The Guardia Civil later confirmed the identity of this poor woman with the initials M.W. As usual, the full name is being withheld by official sources. All that is being said for the moment is that she was British, 53 years old, and a resident of Los Cristianos. The cause of death is still unconfirmed, but suspected to be through drowning. Security forces again cleared the same area of beach in Playa de las Americas as a safety measure after a shark was spotted around 2.30 on Monday afternoon behind the Verónicas in Playa de las Américas. The shark, said not to be large, was sighted just four metres from the shore. The deputy mayor and Environment councillor of Arona, Antonio Sosa, has announced that the council has initiated a procedural response protocol along with security forces as a result of the sightings – now three in little less than a month – in the Playa Troya area. Sr Sosa stressed that he did not wish to generate alarm, not least because there is no history of aggression with these creatures. He said that in principle there is no danger, but that the council wanted to avoid any possible incidents. The council will now carry out an in-depth study, Sr Sosa concluded. 100 euros. That was the measly haul three hooded thieves got away with in the early hours of Sunday morning after wrecking several slot and vending machines in the restaurant Rancho just outside Palm Mar, and injuring the security man before tying him up in order to ensure their escape. The burglars made their getaway towards the roundabout, and it is not known whether they then headed for El Fraile, Guargacho or Guaza: presumably, though, they were heading for the TF1. The alarm was finally raised shortly before 6am, and the Guardia Civil are now investigating the aggravated break-in. The security guard is safe and not badly injured, and has already given the police his statement. A Ryanair flight from East Midlands to Tenerife had to be rerouted to Faro, Portugal after the pilot became incapacitated. Emergency services reported an ambulance was dispatched to the airport to take care of a pilot who was suffering from an anxiety attack. The incident aircraft continued the flight after about 2:45 hours on the ground and reached Tenerife with a delay of 3 hours. The airline reported that the captain became unwell in flight. The first officer diverted the aircraft to Faro for a normal landing; a standby captain was called in to resume the flight.

AS part of the Adeje local fiestas the Miss Sur contest will take place in the Plaza de españa, just beside the church at the top of the Calle Grande, on Friday october 18th. on Tuesday the contestants posed for photographs for local press at Siam Park in the company of Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, cultural councillor Adolfo Alonso, Siam Park owner Christoph kiessling and the event organiser Sandro Pérgola.

This is the second year the event will be held in Adeje. The mayor said that last year’s event had been a huge success and very popular with the public, “and we are delighted to welcome back the event as part of our local celebrations that are taking place at the moment”. He added that the competition was perfectly designed to fit in to the theme of the fiestas this year, Tradition and Modernity, as well as continuing to promote Adeje as a top quality tourist destination. “These are not just beautiful young women; they are students, workers, professionals striving to succeed. This competition will also open doors for them in the competitive world of fashion and teach them about working in a team”. Sandro Pérgola, the Miss Sur organiser, thanked the local administrations of Adeje, Arona, San Miguel de Abona, Santiago del Teide, Fasnia and Güímar for their co-operation as well as Siam Park, Shark, Bualá, Fraya, Dolores Cortes, Helidream Canarias, Grupo Gomasper, Centro Comercial Gran Sur, Mirador de El Galeón, Dreamplace Hotels, Spa Vitanoba, Océanos Combustibles, Bar El Cine, Gour-

Unlike many other beauty competitions Miss Sur also acts as a promotional platform for the different boroughs in South Tenerife. In the case of Adeje the candidates have participated in a report on the delights of Costa Adeje which will be shown during the competition and subsequently on local television throughout the islands. Miss Sur 2013 takes place on Friday October 18th, in the Plaza de España, starting at 9pm, and is open to the public at no charge. The 19 candidates, representing the southern boroughs and private companies are Yosleidi Luis, Coraima Afonso, Fiorella Trevisani, Luciana Hurtado, Lorena de Souza, Celia Torres, Jessica Hernández, Nidia Delgado, Yasmina Toali, Nieves Lugo, Sophie Abreu, Vaittiare

L

ast week, to take a break from the relentless shopping (I bet Zara’s had a good week) we took the in-laws to the town of Candelaria.

Between Guimar and Santa Cruz and just before the Carrefour turnoff (and another Zara!) the town of Candelaria is easy, even for drivers new to Tenerife to find, just head up the TF1 to exit 17 then it’s the TF283 which takes you right in to Candelaria... simples!! Candelaria is a beautiful and historic town-it’s not massive, you can pretty much see everything in a couple of hours which makes it an ideal morning sightseeing stop-off on the way to Santa Cruz, Puerto De La Cruz or wherever you are headed. There’s a good sized car park next to a small but pretty black sanded beach, and very generously, they give you the first hour for free!! We parked up and headed down the Calle Obispo Pérez Cáceres, a street full of some lovely shops and cafes and restaurants. Incidentally, about halfway along the street, for anyone who, like me, enjoys cooking, there is a fantastic shop that sells just about every herb and spice that you can possibly ever wish for, as well as dozens of teas, all available loose or in packages-I got some smoked paprika (quite hard to find) 500 grams for 1.30 Euro!! Another place worth mentioning is the ice cream parlour, the flavours available are really something, including some I’d never seen before-Green Apple, Bacardi and Donut to mention just a few!! Anyway, it was a short walk and then we arrived at the Basilica. Plaza De La Patrona De Canarias Aside from the impressive Basilica itself, the Plaza is dominated by the huge imposing statues of Los Menceyes, the 9 Guanche Kings who ruled the Menceyatos-the pre-Hispanic kingdoms of Tenerife. Set upon volcanic rock plinths with plaques bearing each King’s name, the bronze statues stand I guess about 12-15 feet tall and are truly fantastic. The statues are; Acaymo, Mencey of Tacoronte, Adjona,of Abona, Anaterve of Güímar, Bencomo of Taoro, Beneharo of Anaga, Pelicar of Icod, Pelinor of Adeje, Romen of Daute And Tegueste, Mencey of Tegueste. La Basilica De Candelaria The Basilica is free to enter, there is a room to the right of the entrance, la Sala de Las Velas, where, for a small donation you can light a series of electric votive, or prayer candles and these are for Prayer Intentions, lighting a candle for someone indicates one’s intention to say a prayer for someone and the candle symbolises that prayer. The Basilica of the Royal Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Candelaria is a Roman Catholic minor Basilica, the first Marian shrine of the Canary Islands; it is dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria, the Patron of the Canary Islands. It is of NeoClassic architecture and was completed in 1959, it has a capacity of 5000 and receives over 2.5 million visitors annually. As I mentioned in a previous article, the original Holy Image of the Virgin was discovered on a beach near Candelaria and now a wooden statue of Her dominates the church above the altar. As well as the Virgin, the Basilica features several mural paintings, representing angels, Canarian saints and devotees of the Virgin. There are also two impressive murals, one in La Capilla de Sagrario, the Chapel of Sanc-

tum which depicts the Last Supper, as well as scenes depicting the apparition of the Virgin to the Guanches. In La Capilla de Cristo de la Reconciliación- The Chapel of The Holy Christ or Reconciliation, a mural shows the crucifixion of Christ. The Basilica is a beautiful and holy

place well worth a visit-although we couldn’t help feeling a little like intruders-a Mass was being held as we took a look around, but I guess the Basilica is partly reliant on the donations to the votive candles that visitors bring in. We had hoped to end our tour of

Candelaria with a visit to La Cueva De Achbinico, also known as the Cave of San Blas, situated behind the Basilica. This cave was the first Christian temple of the Canary Islands and the place where the Guanches worshipped the original holy statue of the Virgin of Candelaria, carbon dating has proved

that a fire was kept, burning continuously as long as three thousand years ago. Unfortunately we found this area to be closed to the public for works at the moment so that ended our short pilgrimage to the Holy town of Candelaria...... with time left for yet another trip to Zara!!!!

Canarian High Court annuls Arona’s PGO

Nearly two years ago, in 2011, Arona Ayuntamiento approved its PGO (Plan General de Ordenación) which defines the plots within the municipality. One area that got the go-ahead for development was El Mojón, a name usually associated with the new southern hospital just below Chayofa, but

which in fact is the whole area between the present town of Los Cristianos and the TF1.

This area, of some 500,000 square metres, was marked out with streets and paving for some time, and was intended to become the “economic motor” not just of Los Cristianos, but of south Tenerife generally, according to the Ayuntamiento its title was “Great plans for huge ex-

pansion of Los Cristianos as Arona at last approves PGO”. However, the Canarian High Court has thrown out Arona’s PGO, because land designations were approved without the required environmental reports. The controversial areas are in the Cabo Blanco and Buzanada areas, but stretch to Valle San Lorenzo too, and call into question all plans for development in the municipality, including the El Mojón area.

Administrative chaos in Arona

janetanscombe.com

The judgment throws Arona’s municipal planning into confusion, not least because it has taken the Ayuntamiento years even to reach this stage of “approval” for land designations which clearly should never have been given in the first place – and which, accord-

ing to AquiSur, is all bound up with the various elements of the Caso Arona (or various Casos Arona) even resulted in death threats against critics. As of Tuesday, mayor Niño was denying all knowledge of the judgment, saying he had not yet been notified, but it is now clear that the Court’s

It really is quite unbelievable. Not only have the lifeguards still not been paid, but 2013’s summer has passed completely without sunbeds and parasols on Arona’s beaches. Moreover, the procedure to award the contract to another sunbed provider had last week almost come to an end when it was called to a halt and thrown out: journalists and anti-corruption investigators are crawling all over the council and yet someone still thought they could get away with a bit of backhanded information passing to help one of those submitting tenders. This was discovered, of course, and so it’s back to square one with the entire procedure.

Bad enough, you’d think, but no. Ashotel, the hotel association, made a donation to the lifeguards last Wednesday of essential medi-

The Guardia Civil has issued an advisory note because of an almost universal scam where someone turns up at a property to carry out a “gas maintenance inspection. The so-called “inspectors” are insistent, say the GC, and are even uniformed to look like household name businesses, like Repsol or Cepsa. They charge for unnecessary inspections and always find “urgent problems or alterations” to create a formal-looking bill of hundreds of Euros, and cannot be accused of fraud because they get householders to sign an order for the work. The GC stress that it is only the person responsible for the gas installation (whether own-

cal supplies including first-aid kits and medications which should, by rights, have been supplied by the Ayuntamiento. There was no doubt an element of self-interest behind the act, but we can’t look gift horses in the mouth, and it served a dire need and should be applauded. The donation was handed personally to mayor Niño by the president of the association, Jorge Marichal, himself, and it would have been expected to find its way to the lifeguards immediately. However it took until Tuesday of this week before the lifeguards received the supplies donated by Ashotel, in association with FuenteAlta, Grupo Hospitalario Quirón de Tenerife, MareNostrum and Mutua 2008. They expressed their gratitude for the collaborative effort and hope that they will soon have their salaries. I’m sure everyone will wish to express gratitude for the lifeguards own continued efforts despite Arona’s despicable, shameful and inept handling of the situation. er or tenant) who is responsible for carrying out gas inspections, and this is something they are required to do. Indeed they are required by law to carry out their own inspections every five years. In the case of those with piped gas, they will have a distributor who will arrange this, sending an inspector to a pre-arranged appointment. Payment for the inspection is made by the householder in the subsequent gas bill. In the case of bottled gas too, users must have an inspection every five years, but in this case, must find a business specifically authorized to carry out inspections. Payment will again be made by the householder, but in this instance, by specific invoice. Note that you must find these businesses – they do not approach you. Anyone who approaches you for a gas installation/maintenance inspection is almost certainly not from an authorized business, and may well be part of this known scam. They look the business. They are not. Be on guard and refuse them entry. There have been constant reports made over the past few months, but occasionally the drip of complaints becomes a flood. Take extra care, and remember that inspections only ever take place at pre-arranged appointments. No genuine “gas inspector” ever turns up unannounced.

Answer to the CRYPTIC CROSSWORD is on page 2

www.tenerife-weekly.com I ReAD a tiny snippet on Isabel Gonzales and Tenerife a while ago and decided to find out more. It was difficult, because the story of Isabel aka ‘Red Lily’ (the tragic love story Le Lys Rouge was the pseudonym used by Isabel) and her struggle in the early 1920’s when women fought to occupy their rightful place in Canarian society has been virtually erased from the history books.

Having sort of pieced together the story, I showed Jim – his comment was “boring”. However, I found it fascinating, not because of Isabel’s political beliefs, as I personally have none, but because being a ‘child of the 60s’ and growing up with a more general movement for gender equality based on women’s liberation and feminism, Isabel to me seemed a brave and strong woman years ahead of her time. The following is what I managed to find……….. Isabel Gonzalez was born in Santa Cruz in 1890. She emigrated, with her mother, to Cuba and later returned to Puerto de la Cruz where they had a small fabric shop. It was in Puerto that Isabel met and married Aurelio Perdigón. The couple moved to Santa Cruz, where Aurelio, a shoemaker, established a shop and Isabel, an expert seamstress, ran a sewing workshop where she employed several women. The relatively well-off couple had two daughters, Ligia, who died after contracting whooping cough and Electra, born in 1917 whose name comes from the play by Gran Canarian writer Benito Perez Galdos a favourite of the couple. Despite not having read the Marxist classics, Isabel was one of the first people in Tenerife who understood what the Revolution of 1917 in Russia really meant. She was in awe of the women workers in Petrograd who left their factories and entered the streets to protest. She had long believed that women were ready to be heard and have a voice in politics and this was enough to inspire her to become a fervent member of the socialist cause and the emancipation of proletarian women.

Tenerife Weekly - 11th October 2013 - 17th October 2013

azucena-rojas – the red Lily http://redqueenmusings.wordpress.com

Her husband also had an active political life in the PSOE. But within a few years, it became clear that his party chiefs retained much of their bourgeois upbringing and were unwilling to become true revolutionaries and follow the Russians. By 1919, a time when women in Spain were completely marginalised from any political activity, Isabel was totally committed to her political beliefs. For her, the liberation of women and their right to vote could not be separated from the struggle for a socialist society to emancipate the working classes from the oppression to which they were subjected. In June of that year Red Lily published an article in El Socialista where she passionately urged socialist men to recognise and accept the active role working-class woman had to play in the new era. The following October, the socialist group of Santa Cruz organised a political meeting in Puerto de la Cruz. It was here that Isabel, as president of the Socialist Women’s

League, addressed the assembly on the rights of Tenerife women workers and their struggle. She was the first woman who spoke at a political event in Tenerife and while initially her combative speeches and writings shocked, it was not long before her popularity grew among the working classes of the island. Red Lily’s articles always distinguished by their revolutionary sentiment constantly referred to her first-hand knowledge of the suffering of children, single women, the exploitation of seamstresses and the contempt with which women in general were treated by the bourgeoisie. In January 1921, her husband joined the Board of the Tenerife Socialist Group. A year later, saw the merger of the Socialist Group and Young Socialists, and he was elected as president. At that time a small red faction believed it was time to leave Reformism and move to a truly revolutionary political strategy, which could only be Marxism-Leninism. However, the conditions at the time

prevented this and it took several years before it took root. In the 1930s, with the rise of the labour movement in the islands, Isabel played an important role and achieved significant impact in Canaries politics. Growing conflict and independent communist groups were gradually increasing throughout the islands and the Tenerife Communists united around Red Lily. It did however take until 1933 at a Congress in Gran Canaria for a unification of all these groups, and the creation of the definitive Communist Party in the Canaries. It was at this time, that Isabel organised “Feminist Clarity” a group that clearly indicated the importance she always placed for the inclusion of women workers into the revolutionary political struggle. In 1935, Red Lily visited the Soviet Union to attend the May Day celebrations as part of a delegation of workers. She was extremely ill while there, suffering from cystitis and spent several months in a sanatorium during which time she wrote

9

many articles that were published in the USSR newspaper Spartacus. Upon her return from the Soviet Union, Isabel continued her communist activities in Tenerife and created the group Friends of the Soviet Union. Following the victory of the Popular Front in the elections of February 1936, she was appointed Councillor of the City of Santa Cruz on behalf of PCE. Upon taking office in March 17th Isabel became, if only for a few months, the first councillor of City. However, on July 17th Franco’s military seized power and quickly took control of the archipelago which started the Spanish Civil War, in the Canaries. Although, there was never a proper war in the islands, the oppression was severe and involved the implementation of a fierce policy of repression when fascism tried to annihilate all those who dared to rebel against the semifeudal, bureaucratic system. Red Lily and her husband went into hiding, Aurelio sought refuge in Puerto de la Cruz, with his family and Isabel hid in Santa Cruz, frequently changing houses to avoid being discovered. Meanwhile, the fascist military arrested their daughter Electra to question her about their whereabouts. After spending around 10 years in hiding thanks to an amnesty in October 1945 Red Lily received a pardon and returned to a ‘normal’ life resuming work as a seamstress, albeit with a tight police surveillance. The Franco authorities did not trust her, since various sources cited communist clandestine activities and while Red Lily never abandoned her strong communist convictions she never again appeared at the forefront of any public events. At the age of 71, Isabel suffered a stroke forcing her to spend 7 years in a wheelchair. Finally, at the age of 78 years, Red Lily was the victim of another stroke while taking a shower that was severe enough to end her life. August marked the 45th anniversary of the death of Isabel Gonzalez, the co-founder of the Communist Party in Tenerife, yet very few remembered the date. Nevertheless, Isabel was one of the most exceptional women in the history of the Canary Islands and deserves to occupy a prominent place in the islands history.

La gomera ferry up the Lions are Back and running again?

http://lagomera1.blogspot.com.es LoCAL media are reporting today that negotiations for the re-introduction of the ferry line which used to connect the ports of San Sebastian de La Gomera, Playa de Santiago and valle Gran Rey are progressing well and at an ‘advanced stage’.

Reportedly there is more than one applicant company interested in connecting the three harbours on La Gomera and the Canarian government is said to be willing to subsidise the ferries for passengers resident in the Canary Islands. The ferry line Garajonay Express which suc-

cessfully operated the line initially with more than two million passengers is sorely missed here. Bear in mind that the journey from Valle Gran Rey to the island’s capital takes much less time by ferry than by bus. Keep the fingers crossed!

george HorSfaLL West Coast adventure 1922 - 2013 to focus the mind on

mental Health

GeoRGe and his wife Alma moved to Tenerife eight years ago to be close to their only daughter Beverley and son-in- law Dennis. Both were well-known characters in Los Cristianos, and in particular around the Apolo Centre.

Alma died five years ago, shortly before they would have celebrated sixty years of marriage. Family meant so much to him, and he will be greatly missed by his family here in Tenerife and by his grandchildren Hazel and Jonathan. Though far away, he had recently discovered Skype, and had been talking to the younger members of the family through the internet. His first sight of Beverley on the wide screen television still causes great amusement: it took a while for him to understand what was going on! Though he missed Alma greatly, nothing stopped him from getting around on his own, more often than not, stopping to talk with friends or even with strangers on his regular walks between Castle Harbour and the Apolo Centre. There must be hundreds of people now who know all about his early days driving trams and buses in Leeds, his home town, and how

he had known Alma from chapel when he was thirteen. He was a regular attender of the Wednesday Club until Alzheimer’s started to take a toll on his memory. In recent months he had spent more time in a day centre, but was also cared for at home by two good friends, John and Frank as well as by his family. George was a regular member of the congregation at the South Tenerife Christian Fellowship in the Apolo Centre and for some years had been standing at the top of the stairs as people arrived for the service, shaking hands and giving them a smiling welcome. A memorial service will be held at STCF, Apolo Centre at 12 Noon on Saturday, 19th October to celebrate George’s life. It is an open service and all who knew him are welcome.

Simple steps can help expatriates to help themselves, says British Ambassador Giles Paxman Consulates are focusing on most serious

Taking a few simple steps can help British expatriates to prepare for the difficulties of living in Spain or avoid them altogether, Ambassador Giles Paxman says in a new TV interview.

Checking your passport expiry date, telling visitors from the UK what to get before they travel, and visiting your local town hall to find out about local services are all measures that will help Britons in Spain to avoid running into timeconsuming problems later, says Mr Paxman. “If you’re living here you can prepare for the sort of difficulties you might face so that if those difficulties do occur, they remain simply difficulties and don’t become dramas”, says Mr Paxman in an interview with expatriate television station Viva TV, which can also be seen on YouTube. “First of all check the validity of your passport. It’s very easy simply to make a note in your diary when your passport needs renewing. If you don’t and you’ve suddenly got to travel overseas, it’s going to be very disruptive and very expensive to get an emergency passport.” “Tell people who are coming to visit you what they need to do before they travel. Tell them to get their European Health Insurance Card, and tell them to get comprehensive travel insurance because if they don’t and something happens to them, then the holiday will turn into a nightmare.” Mr Paxman adds that it is important that expatriates should try to

and demanding assistance cases

integrate into their local communities. “A lot of British people who live here don’t speak Spanish and I understand that, but more and more local authorities do have people who speak English. Go along to your local town hall and find out what sort of services they’re offering. “You’ll probably find there’s more than you might imagine including the local, emergency and health services that may be able to help if you face a problem. Those are the people that Britons should be turning to if they face difficulties, rather than coming to the Consulates.” The British consular network in Spain is the busiest in the world, handling more than 6000 cases last year. “Because we have such a high volume of cases we have to be fairly selective about the things that we will do and the things that we won’t,” says Mr Paxman. “We have to focus on the most serious and demanding cases. “Some of these cases are highly distressing: young people who have come out to Spain and because they haven’t taken the right precautions or because of a moment’s stupidity – often alcohol fuelled they can ruin their lives.” Finally, Mr Paxman encourages all expatriates to visit the British government website at www.gov.uk.

“You can find out so much about what the government does and what services are offered in every area from tax to health and social services. You may find the answer to a lot of questions you didn’t

even know you had.” The interview with Mr Paxman was filmed by Alicante-based Viva TV and reflects on the Ambassador’s four years in Spain. It can be seen on YouTube at https://www.youtube.

Spanish Government Widens Healthcare Cover

As pledged in last year’s Healthcare Reform measures, this September the Spanish government announced guidelines for the new Convenio Especial (or Special Scheme).

Dianamcglone.com

The Convenio Especial is a public health insurance scheme through which those who don‘t have access to state provided health care can pay a monthly fee to get cover. This does not apply to state pensioners, workers, those who have exhausted

unemployment benefits, those who registered as residents in Spain before 24.04.12, or their dependents as they should already have their own health cover. The scheme will be nationwide, but managed by each autonomous region which will have the option of including different services over and above the basic package announced by the Government. Policy holders, including children, will pay on an individual basis and be able to receive access to public healthcare anywhere in Spain, regardless of pre-existing conditions. The announced basic monthly fee will be 60 Euros for the under 65’s and 157 Euros for those aged 65 or over. However, prescription costs are not subsidised so it is likely you would pay the full cost. Further information will soon be available from your local health centre.

from Tenerife Angels, birthday party. We were happy to host the BBQ as Sally is one of Katie’s benefactors and a long term Live Arico supporter. We raised 285 Euros, just by really having a great day out. Many thanks to Jim and Sara Chew for inviting us, and to Sally’s Bob, for manning the bar and making gallons of delicious mojito. Also to Mig, for once again being invaluable on the BBQ, and lastly of course to everyone for coming and enjoying the day. Oh, and Katie won a consolation rosette in the prettiest horse competition, which she celebrated by gate-crashing the BBQ area for the rest of afternoon. Good times.

IT’S ALMOST HERE!!!

Marmaduke is around 6-years-old and a big boy; he looks to have a bit of Great Dane in there somewhere. He has come to us in bad shape, extremely skinny and undernourished, infested with fleas and ticks and his poor ears raw from constant insect bites. However, as always we never give up and like a challenge. By the time you are reading this he will have been cleaned up, vaccinated, chipped, sterilised, wormed and de-flea’d. By some miracle he does not have the dreaded heartworm so that’s something.

Despite the years of neglect he has suffered, he is a friendly boy, but big and strong. He would be ideal on a finca where he can run and play. Can you give him his forever home, and the care he deserves? If so, call Sue on 629 388 102 for more details.

Katie’s Second BBQ Party A Great Success Last Sunday the 6th October we were back at Horse Riding Adventures, Aldea Blanca, for Katie’s BBQ number 2. Katie is of course our beloved rescue horse who continues to amaze us with her progress. The day was also the Autumn Show at the stables with various competitions held throughout the day, as well as being Sally,

This week we are going to focus on just one product –ARGI+, a daily supplement containing L’Arginine (hence the name!). L’Arginine is an amino acid that is beneficial to overall health – in fact our bodies convert it into nitric oxide, a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and open wide for greater blood flow, which in turn supports many important functions in our body, such as maintaining healthy blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health. It contains pomegranate well known for its strong antioxidant properties, red wine extract which helps to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, grape skin ideal for cardiovascular and immune system health, as well

as fruit juices that provide nutrients and essentials fatty acids and finally berries, that help to neutralize free radicals and support healthy ageing, as well as other ingredients which support healthy joint function. Additionally it contains valuable vitamins which are essential to life and assist our body’s functions. Vitamin C (especially important in strengthening the body’s defenses), vitamin K2 (ideal for bone formulation, blood clotting, healing and vitality), vitamin B6 (healthy immune system, healthy nervous system, brain, muscles, oxygen transportation, protein, fat and carbohydrates) vitamin D3 (immune system, bones, healthy nervous system and positive mood), vitamin B9 (new cells, brain, nerves and growth) vitamin B12 (a healthy nervous system, positive mood, brain growth and oxygen transportation). What are the benefits of

ARGI+? 1. Affects insulin sensitivity – helpful in maintaining blood glucose control. 2. The nitric oxide formed allows for greater blood flow and may help to improve sexual function! 3. Helps to release anti-ageing hormones 4. Aids in the maintenance of healthy blood pressure and cardiovascular system 5. It contains pomegranate and other fruit (berries, grapes) which are rich sources of antioxidants and help to fight against the damaging effects of free radicals. 6. Aids with bone and tissue growth repair – will help in the repair of soft tissue injury or a fracture. 7. Helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels 8. Increases muscle mass and strength whilst reducing the amount of fatty tissue. 9. Supports the immune system 10. Taken as a daily supplement it supports better health throughout many of the body’s systems. ARGI+ is specially formulated exclusively by Forever Living in consultation with Dr Ferid Murad, MD, PhD (1998 Nobel Laureate in Medicine and Physiology) who, together with Robert Furchgott and Louis Ignarro won the 1998 Nobel Prize for the discovery that nitric oxide can be used to signal blood vessels to relax and widen, thus assisting in lowering blood pressure.

Mayors To Meet

The mayor of La Laguna, also the leader of the Coalition Canaria (CC) party in Tenerife, Fernando Clavijo, has invited the 8,117 local mayors of Spain to a meeting to be held in Madrid this Sunday, in protest against the State Government’s new bill for the “Streamlining and Sustainability of Local Administrations”.

Over 2,500 local representatives are expected to attend, although probably not the Partido Popular led councils, who will be in agreement with the proposal from the PP Government of Mariano Rajoy. The protest comes in the same week that local reform will be discussed by Congress. The amendment bill, states the following four objectives: Clarify and simplify municipal powers and responsibilities to avoid duplication with other governmental organisations Streamline the organizational structure of local government in accordance with the principles of efficiency and budget balance Ensure more rigorous financial and budgetary control Encourage local economic development by employment of liberalizing measures It will go to the Lower House on Thursday 17, after

dianamcglone.com

already being approved in July by the Council of Ministers. The Mayor of La Laguna believes the legislative reform “undermines local government and does not solve its stated objectives, such as defining the areas of responsibility of local authorities and funding them. Municipalities are already having to assume responsibility for many services that our citizens demand from us, but funding these is not covered by the bill. “This reform is a smokescreen that conceals several darker objectives” complains Clavijo, “among which is the mass dismissal of public employees. Clearly, if the municipalities are merged we will have to cut staff “, he warns. If the reform came into force as it is now, La Laguna would have to cut all municipal services related to Education and Welfare, which, says Clavijo, would include the clo-

sure of municipal nurseries, after-school programs being cancelled and aid for books and school materials cut . “We would also have to stop providing aid to NGOs, basic necessities for the poor, housing, home help… who is going to provide these services? If this bill goes through, clearly no one is,” says the mayor. Jonathan Fumero, opposition CC party Mayoral candidate for Santiago del Teide, reports on his Facebook page: “This amendment will turn the municipality of Santiago del Teide into a mere office. It will take away our powers in the areas of Social Services, Education, Culture and Sports. That means nurseries, support classes, playgroups, the schools of music, football and basketball… This creates an unfair distinction between municipalities with over 20,000 inhabitants and less than 20,000. Which affects us in all respects.

The events will be an opportunity for past and present customers of local Tenerife based travel company, Tenerife Sunshine, to get to know Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and the exciting new cruise itineraries. Fred. Olsen’s International Sales Manager, Kate Wooldridge, will deliver a presentation on the lines background, from beginnings as a Norwegian based shipping company to the present day operations as a global cruise line. Kate will also give attendees detailed information on the fantastic destinations, which include Lanzarote, Cape Verdes, Senegal and the Gambia.

The events will be held at: The Highland Paddy, opposite the Church Square, in Los Gigantes on Tuesday 15th October from 3pm with English High Tea The English Library in Puerto de La Cruz on Thursday 17th October from 3pm with English High Tea The Nautical Club in Puerto Colon on Friday 18th October from 6pm with a wide selection of drinks and nibbles Attendees will learn about Fred. Olsen’s fleet of four cruise ships – Black Watch, Braemar, Boudicca and Balmoral – all of which are ideally suited to the traditional British cruise guest. With

everything on board priced in Pounds Sterling, there is a definite ‘home-from-home’ feel throughout the fleet. All four ships offer a friendly and welcoming ‘country house’ atmosphere, where friendships are forged with fellow guests and crew alike. Fred. Olsen ships offer a relaxed and informal style of cruising, yet retain those aspects that make a cruise such a ‘special’ form of holiday, such as dressing for the formal dinner evenings. Kate Wooldridge, Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ International Sales Manager, said: “Fred. Olsen is delighted to be working with Tenerife Sunshine to host these three special events in October, especially after the huge success of the first one that we held in Los Cristianos in July – we had over 50 guests attend. To have the opportunity, again, to raise the awareness of the ex-Tenerife cruises on Braemar is fantastic and I am so looking forward to meeting some potential new customers.” Kate added: “The team at Tenerife Sunshine always organise very professional yet relaxed and fun events for all and we are delighted to be working with them as a key trade partner in Tenerife.” Highlights from the new cruise programme include: ‘Cape Verdes and West Africa’ for 14-nights, ‘Madeira, Morocco and the Canaries’ for 11-nights, ‘Senegal,

Gambia and Cape Verdes’ for 11-nights and a ‘Canaries and Madeira’ cruise for 7-nights. Mainland News In Brief Labour ministry figures show the number of people registered as unemployed rose by over 25 thousand during September, 0.5% higher than the previous month. The rise brings an end to six month gradual decline in the country’s rate. Now, with the end of September and tourism season, most of the people hired for the summer season lost their jobs. Some unions in Spain consider say that the austerity measures and the lack of investment by the government are main reason for the tide of joblessness. The government however hopes for more jobs to be created in the following months, but Spanish women however are not as optimistic as the government officials. Over 26 thousand women lost their jobs in September. Among all sectors in Spain, the most affected one has been the services sector with total loss of 52 thousand workers. People without any previous jobs signed to the unemployment offices have also increased over 11.5 thousand people. A Spanish court has convicted 53 people in Spain’s biggest ever corruption trial and acquitted 42 others. The case centered on widespread real estate fraud and bribery in the southern jet-set resort town of Marbella in the mid-1990s. The defendants in the two-year trial that ended last year included former town hall officials, lawyers and business representatives. The alleged fraud mastermind, former Marbella urban planning adviser Juan Antonio Roca, got the biggest sentence, 11 years, for money laundering, bribery and fraud. Roca has been in jail since 2006. Former Marbella mayors Marisol Yague and Julian Munoz received sentences of six and two years, respectively. The scheme began when late Atletico de Madrid football club owner Jesus Gil was mayor of Marbella between 1991 and 2002. Emergency services say a man died after being crushed by grapes during the annual harvest in the central Spanish wine producing region of Castilla-La Mancha. A local rescue service centre said the man was pulled out of a winery grape reception bay that he had fallen into, just as a truck unloaded 5.5 tons of grapes ready for crushing into juice for winemaking. Ambulance operators and fire fighters tried to resuscitate the man but he was declared dead. An Interior Ministry official has said a woman has died after being gored by a bull during a small town festival in central Spain. A spokeswoman said Monday the woman aged 58 died in hospital in the provincial capital of Albacete after she was gored in the abdomen during a running of bulls a day earlier in the small town of Ferez. Three other people were injured by the bull, including the woman’s daughter. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of ministry rules prevent her from being named. Spanish bank Santander has agreed to pay 140 million euros for a 51% stake in the country’s largest consumer finance business from department store chain El Corte Ingles. Insiders with knowledge of El Corte Ingles consider the business one of the most lucrative assets of the retailer since it has more than 10.5 million store card customers and is the largest consumer finance business in the country. The deal would allow Santander, Spain’s biggest bank, to access the privately owned firm’s huge database of customers to target them with products from its own consumer finance business.

British Criminals in Spain to feel force of UK’s newest Crime-fighters Organised criminals who believe they can evade arrest by hiding in Spain will feel the full force of the UK’s newest crime fighting agency when it goes live this month.

From 7 October the National Crime Agency (NCA) will use more than 4,000 specialist crime fighters to tackle some of the world’s toughest and most organised criminals. The new agency will strengthen relations between law enforcement in the UK and Spain. The NCA will build on its work with a range of agencies including the Spanish National Police, Guardia Civil and Spanish Customs to tackle threats including economic crime, criminal finances and profits, organised immigration crime and emerging threats such as e-crime. Of particular interest to both countries will be cocaine and cannabis entering the UK via Spain from Latin America and North and West Africa. The new agency will also focus on the activities of British organised criminals based in Spain. It will continue to work closely with Spanish partners under Operation Captura, which has seen 53 of the UK’s most wanted criminals arrested. The operation will continue to be a threat to British fugitives residing in Spain. Criminals will be targeted across the globe as the NCA tackles international threats abroad before they reach the UK border. Led by 120 liaison officers in 40 global locations, the NCA’s reach will stretch across 150 countries. The NCA will work with partners in Spain to tackle organised crime groups in-country, share intelligence on joint

threats and targets, and intercept people, property and money moving to and from the UK. David Armond, Director of Border Policing Command for the NCA, said: “Tackling serious and organised crime goes way beyond the shores of the United Kingdom. Some of the biggest threats to the national security of countries around the globe come from individuals and crime groups who globally cost us billions of pounds every year and ruin lives and communities. “These people must be stopped, and the NCA will lead the UK’s law enforcement role at an international level. “The NCA will be a powerful crime fighting agency, with more than 4,000 crime fighters working with partners at

home and abroad to cut serious and organised crime.” The new agency will have a much wider remit than its predecessors, with an additional focus on cyber crime, fraud and economic crime alongside the more familiar types of serious and organised criminal activity such as drugs, child sexual exploitation, human trafficking and firearms. When it launched on 7 October, the NCA are now leading the UK’s fight to cut serious and organised crime by building on the cutting-edge technologies and expertise of officers from its key predecessor organisations, including the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre.

Civil War Recipe Book Discovered

A book of recipes dating back to the Spanish Civil War has been found in Spain. The books containing 2,668 handwritten recipes were discovered during the renovation of Finca Torrecillas in Corvera, Asturias.

Each notebook was covered in meticulous handwriting, with different colour pencils used for headings and titles. The books had been hidden away by Maria Luisa, the current owners grandmother, and were thought to be written by her mother Isabel Estremera, who cooked in

the Finca from 1930-1945. The 17th century Finca once fed some of soldiers of the civil war throughout the Franco-era and was occasionally used as boarding house. The hidden recipes hark back to a simpler time, when ingredients were rare. Many of the ingredients in the book would have been hard to find at the time due to rationing, suggesting they may have been obtained on the black market. The recipes are being transcribed by local author, Birmingham born Debbie Jenkins, with a view to publishing them as a recipe book.

all Change at iberia

IBeRIA is launching a new corporate logo and brand image. The launch of the new image will become effective in midnovember with the delivery of Iberia’s first Airbus A330 bearing the new logo, which is presently nearing completion at the Airbus factory in Toulouse.

The new brand image, which will keep the current symbols and colour scheme that identify the airline as the Spanish flag carrier, is part of a wider renovation and modernisation programme that is intended to make Iberia a modern, profitable, and sustainable company, attractive both to customers and staff. New aircraft, totally redesigned cabins in all long-haul aircraft that will put

both tourist and business class sections at the top of the market, plus a new website with expanded travel planning options, are other aspects of the programme, along with a major boost in punctuality, Iberia now ranks 7th amongst major airlines, and numerous improvements to passengers’ airport experience at Iberia’s T4 hub at MadridBarajas airport.

Changes at madrid iberia terminal CuTBACkS at Iberia could force Madrid’s Barajas airport to allow other airlines to use the terminal previously reserved for the exclusive use of the Spanish flag carrier and its oneworld alliance partners, Spain’s industry minister has said. Loss-making Iberia, part of the International Airlines Group (IAG) along with British Airways, is undergoing a major restruc-

turing and has cut thousands of staff and a number of routes to cut costs, reducing traffic at the airport. “Terminal 4 is not being used to full capacity,” Jose Manuel Soria said in an interview with radio station Onda Cero. A” country like Spain needs a lot of connections, we don’t just need strong Spanish airlines but also companies flying under other flags.” The terminal was commissioned by Spain’s airport authority as part of expansion plans to

turn Barajas into a leading European hub. But Spain’s fortunes have declined since the terminal opened in 2006. Passenger numbers at Barajas airport so far this year are down by almost 4.5 million on the same period last year, largely because of Iberia’s reduced services. In the first eight months of the year, 26.6 million travellers used the airport, a 14.3% decline year on year. In August, Barcelona’s El Prat airport overtook Madrid in monthly traffic statistics. IAG said in August that a recovery was beginning to take hold at Iberia thanks to the restructuring. Losses at Iberia, Europe’s biggest carrier to Latin America, fell to 35 million euros in the three months to June 30, from 93 million euros in the same quarter last year.

Spain Sports Boss Fined Over Paralympics Scandal

A

Spanish court fined a former sports boss 5,400 euros for fielding athletes with no disabilities at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney where Spain had their most successful Paralympics, winning 107 medals to finish third in the medals table after Australia and Britain.

The Madrid court found the former head of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports, Fernando Martin Vicente, guilty of fraud and ordered that he pay the fine and return 142,355 euros in government subsidies which the federation received for the athletes without disabilities. The scandal broke in November 2000 when Carlos Ribagorda, a member of Spain’s gold medal-winning intellectually handicapped basketball team in Sydney, claimed that he and other athletes in categories such as track and field, table tennis

and swimming were not mentally deficient. “Of the 200 Spanish athletes at Sydney at least 15 had no type of

physical or mental handicap -- they didn’t even pass medical or psychological examinations,” he wrote in the magazine Capital just days after

Women Charged More For Driving Lessons

A Spanish judge has risked the wrath of women everywhere after ruling that a driving school was within its rights to charge female learners more because it was proven that “men were better drivers”.

Judge Javier Albar was asked to decide whether a driving school in Zaragoza was discriminatory for offering male learners a cheaper deal on a course of driving lessons that their female counterparts. The offer, made in November 2011, advertised a deal where for 665 euros male learners aged 18-22 could get as many classes as necessary to pass their driving test. The price for women of the same age, on the other hand, was 850 euros with the argument that on average they needed five lessons more than men to gain their driving licence.

After a flurry of complaints a consumer rights group fined the Gasque driving school of Zaragoza 4,000 euros for sexual discrimination and demanded they drop the disparate offers. But the driving school appealed to the courts presenting research that backed up their claims that women needed more lessons than men to achieve the same standard. The judge agreed, overturned the fine and ruled that a different price for courses offered to male and female learners wasn’t discriminatory.

In his ruling he cited official data from Spain’s Directorate of Traffic that proved “every single year, men displayed greater dexterity and better open road skills” in their driving tests than their female counterparts. Therefore it was perfectly acceptable within the law to offer men a discount because on average they need fewer lessons. Spain’s Women’s Institute complained that the offer was a clear case of sexual discrimination and said they would petition for the matter to be taken to the Constitutional Court.

A man who falsely claimed benefits under his brother’s name for nearly three decades has been found living in a holiday resort on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Retired joiner Norman Brennan, 70, fled to Mijas from Britain five years ago as he was due to be sentenced for stealing almost £120,000 under the name of his brother who lived abroad. Brennan has said he would not return to face justice, and Work and Pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith declared he would deal with the fugitive fraudster himself. ‘This case is outrageous,’ the politician said. Brenna, formerly of Netherton, Merseyside, fled the UK in 2008 after pleading guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to seven combined charges of council tax, housing benefit and jobseeker’s allowance fraud. For years he had claimed the benefits, totalling nearly

had no mental handicap. He said the only test he had been asked to complete at his first training session was six press-ups, after which his blood pressure was taken. Martin Vicente resigned as the head of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports, which was responsible for screening some participants in the Paralympics in Sydney shortly after the Capital article was published, saying he accepted “total responsibility”. He had argued that psychological evaluations of mentally deficient athletes are difficult and that mistakes had been made. “If someone wants to cheat, it’s difficult to detect. It’s easy to pretend you have little intelligence but the opposite is difficult,” he said when he announced his resignation. Eighteen other people, including members of the basketball team that went to Sydney and managers of the Spanish Federation for Mentally Handicapped Sports, were also charged over the affair but the court dropped the charges.

£120,000, in the name of his brother, Leslie, who had lived in Germany for nearly 30 years. Brennan was given bail when sentencing was adjourned, but left the country. It is believed he went straight to Mijas where he is said to have bought two adjoining properties in a golfing resort. Sky News tracked down the pensioner, who has long white hair, a bushy white moustache and uses a stick to walk, to the Spanish village of Mijas Costa. When asked by the Sky News presenter if the thought he

should be in the UK, Brennan simply replied: ‘No’. Mr Duncan Smith told the news channel: ‘I’m astonished. I’ll certainly take this case away, and I know that I have myself fraud investigators who are out in Spain already. We’ll check this case, and I can promise you that if they haven’t done enough, they will now do their level best to get this man back. This sort of case is outrageous, and I’ll deal with it.’ A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: ‘Merseyside Police can confirm assistance was provided to Sefton Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) with their original investigation into Mr Brennan. ‘Since the issue of an arrest warrant for Mr Brennan in 2008 the force has been working with other agencies to locate and affect his arrest. This work is on-going.’ An international arrest warrant remains in place for Brennan.

22 Spain grants Whales Bullfighting Beached protected Status in

A DeCISIon by Spain’s congress to protect bullfighting and grant it cultural heritage status has been condemned by international animal rights organisations.

The legislation which designates Spain’s national fiesta as part of “cultural heritage worthy of protection” was passed by a congressional culture committee and will go to a vote in the Senate later this month. The move will create measures and allow public funds to be used to promote and protect bullfighting and related activities such as running of the bulls throughout Spain. A coalition of international animal welfare groups immediately spoke out to criticise the bill and slammed the use of public funds for “unacceptable animal cruelty”. “Spain’s government has signalled its support for unacceptable animal cruelty and the allowance of public funds used to assist the blood sport,” said a statement signed by groups including PETA, Humane Society International, and the World Society for the Protection of Animals. “This move is a cynical attempt by a desperate bullfighting industry to secure the future of this dying industry. Bullfighting is cruel and out-dated and has no place in a modern society; culture stops where cruelty starts,” it

continued. The bill was introduced by the ruling conservative Popular Party, which has a majority in Parliament, and was passed by the congressional committee by 24 votes to six, with 14 abstentions. Attempts to force amendments by smaller opposition parties were rejected by the PP and the main opposition socialist PSOE party abstained from the vote arguing that it was not for politicians to either “ban or promote” bullfighting. The new legislation was not expected to overturn bans on bullfighting introduced by the regional governments of the Canary Islands and Catalonia. The bullfighting industry has been hit by the economic crisis with many cashstrapped town halls unable to afford to stage their annual bullfighting fiesta and

amid falling spectator numbers. A recent poll showed that 76% of Spaniards were against public funds being used to support bullfighting. Philip Mansbridge, CEO for Care in the Wild International, called the new bill an “embarrassment” that was motivated by financial and not cultural reasons: “When will Spain learn that culture cannot be an excuse for cruelty? Spain is a beautiful country but this is an embarrassment. It is an attempt to deflect attack on bullfighting and to get more than the 130 million euros a year in EU subsidies it already gets from our taxes. “As much of the world moves forward in its views towards animals and cruelty, the Spanish government is holding onto its cruel past for financial not cultural reasons,” he said.

easyjet Leaves 29 passengers Stranded

BuDGeT airline easyJet left 29 passengers stranded at Malaga airport while their plane, still carrying their luggage, flew back to england without them. The group, who had checked in on time, were steps away from board the Bristol-bound flight at the departure gate. They had already shown their boarding passes and were ready to board.

But according to passengers, a member of the ground crew appeared and pulled a security ribbon across their path, blocking their entrance to the gangway leading onto the aircraft. Minutes later passengers looked through a window and watched as their half-empty plane pulled away from the stand. Flight number 6056 taxied out and took off on time at 9.15pm on Saturday without them

- but with all their bags on board. The angry passengers tried to get back into the airport departure area but found themselves trapped, locked out by security doors. They were stuck for around 20 minutes until they managed to raise

the alarm by shouting and banging on the doors. Two staff closing a nearby perfume shop heard them and called for a cleaner who managed to unlock them, quickly followed by an easyJet rep. They admitted they had not realised

11 of the whales died as they landed on the beach and the others died later despite the efforts of the Spanish Civil Protection, environmentalists and Galicia Coordination mammalian studies. Now a mystery surrounds why they beached in the first place Long-finned pilot whales or globicephala melas are very sociable and family-orientated animals and are even known to socialise with bottle nosed-dolphins. Authorities have not yet revealed why they think the whales beached on such a huge scale today. But a theory among some biologists is that if a dominant or leader whale is sick and beaches, other whales in the group will follow because of the way their social structure works, and also run aground. La Coruna is a destination popular with tourists and locals alike, and is famed for its natural wildlife, with firms offering whale-watching tours to those visiting the area. that the plane, which had 110 people on board, had left well short of passengers. The stranded 29 were offered the option of a free night’s accommodation near the airport or a seat on the easyJet flight to Gatwick at 10.30pm. Ten of them spent an extra night in Spain and the rest flew back to Gatwick and made their way from there to the West Country. An easyJet spokeswoman said the plane took off because all the passengers had shown their boarding cards at the gate which indicated they had all boarded. She explained there was no mandatory requirement for the crew to do a visual head count of the passengers on board, In a statement easyJet said: ‘easyJet is in the process of

contacting and apologising to the 29 passengers who did not board their flight from Malaga to Bristol on Saturday 5 October due to an issue at the boarding gate. ‘We have launched an investigation to understand what happened and will be offering flight vouchers and a refund of onward travel arrangements from Gatwick as a gesture of goodwill to the affected passengers. ‘easyJet arranged for nineteen passengers to travel on the next available service to Gatwick and arranged accommodation for ten passengers who travelled to Bristol the next day.’ They added: ‘the bags were all security screened prior to being loaded onto the plane, which occurs on every flight.’

Bill gets Spain to Limit $100 a makeover Cigarette exports

The Spanish Treasury is considering measures to prohibit the sale in Spain of cigarettes for export to third countries such as Gibraltar. The move, revealed by Treasury Secretary of State Miguel Ferre navarrete during a conference, aims to stem the flow of export cigarettes that are then smuggled back into Spain.

“Spain has low tax zones such as Gibraltar and Andorra adjacent to its borders, which is where we have seen such tobacco flows that we can then find on Spanish streets,” he told the conference at the Instituto de Estudios Fiscales. Although it is still early days, Sr Ferre said Spain would apply the 2012 Seoul Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. That would require companies involved in the tobacco trade in Spain to account for the volume of their exports to various jurisdictions, and would open the door to fines and sanctions. “How much can one person smoke every day?” Sr Ferre asked:

“Ten packets? Including children? I don’t think so.” The figures he cited were based on how much people in Gibraltar would have to smoke in order to justify the volumes of cigarettes

that Spain estimates are imported here annually. The Gibraltar Government has argued in the past that such estimates do not take into account Gibraltar’s burgeoning tourist industry.

The new ‘Benjamin’ began circulating on Tuesday after a makeover including design updates and anticounterfeiting features. The new $100 bill still features the familiar portrait of Benjamin Franklin, but several design updates make it harder to replicate the currency, officials hope.

The new features include ink that changes colour if the bill is tilted, a 3-D security ribbon and microprinting.

It “will be easier for the public to authenticate but more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate,” the Federal Reserve Board said. In addition to the features printed on the bill, the paper itself will be different, for example with some raised printing in some places. According to the New York Times, the Federal Reserve put the proportion of exported $100 bills at between a half and two-thirds of the total. As a result, the $100 bill is believed to be the most counterfeited US bill outside of the country.

e always told G-G-G-G-Granville the corner shop would be his one day. And now after almost 30 years Open All Hours returns to our screens, viewers will see that stammering Albert Arkwright was true to his word.

In plans for a Christmas special revealed this week, Sir David Jason is set to revive Granville. However, this time, the one-time hapless grocery assistant is in charge. The show will also feature Lynda Baron, 74, returning as unlikely sex symbol nurse Gladys Emmanuel.

In the new episode, Arkwright, originally played by Ronnie Barker, has died and passed the shop on to his nephew in his will. A show source said: ‘The other characters will mention Arkwright, and his picture will be up on the wall of the shop.’

In the original series, Granville was often referred to as ‘young lad’, even though Sir David was over 30 when he played the role. Filmed in Doncaster, Open All Hours ran for 26 episodes between 1976 and 1985. It had 17million viewers at its peak and in 2004 was voted eighth best

MEPs tighten antitobacco laws aimed at young smokers

Euro MPs have voted to tighten tobacco regulations aimed at putting young people off smoking, but not as far as originally planned.

They rejected a European Commission proposal to treat electronic cigarettes as medicinal products; they backed a ban on menthol cigarettes, but not for another five years and the ban on slim cigarettes was rejected. There will be more negotiations with EU governments before the law is adopted. Among other measures, MEPs voted on also included putting health warnings on 65% of each cigarette pack, as opposed to the proposed 75%. The current requirement for health warnings is for 30% minimum coverage on one side and 40% on the other. It is the European Parliament’s first reading of a draft tobacco directive which could become law in 2014. There has been intense lobbying of MEPs by the tobacco industry and health campaigners. The proposals also include a ban on words like “light”, “mild” and “low tar”, deemed

to be misleading, and a ban on chewing tobacco, although Sweden would retain its exemption. Once agreed, all 28 EU countries will have to make the measures law. E-cigarette controversy The UK has already confirmed that e-cigarettes will be licensed as medicine from 2016. Sales of the tobaccofree devices have boomed worldwide since bans on smoking in public places were introduced. But campaigners say their growing popularity is dangerous. They argue that ecigarettes undermine years of anti-smoking efforts and could be especially damaging to children and non-smokers.

The devices are designed to replicate smoking behaviour without the use of tobacco. They turn nicotine and other chemicals into a vapour that is inhaled. Manufacturers of e-cigarettes say the products have the potential to save millions of lives and should not be restricted because they could dramatically reduce smokingrelated diseases. However anti-smoking campaigners say young people especially are being tricked into taking up smoking. “Tobacco products should look and taste like tobacco products,” said EU Health Commissioner Tonio Borg, presenting the proposals.

Open All Hours – Back For Christmas

British sitcom in a nationwide poll. Much of the plot was taken up with Arkwright’s ridiculous attempts to win Nurse Gladys, including several unwanted attempts to climb up to her bedroom window with a ladder. The devious shop owner was expert at persuading customers to buy his products but was miserly with his own money. Every episode ended with Arkwright shutting up shop for the night and reflecting on the day. The one-off episode has been written by Roy Clarke, who penned the original series. Mr Clarke – who is

Gerry McCann has said he and his wife Kate were “very pleased” with the progress being made in Scotland Yard’s review of the search for his missing daughter, he praised the work of the Metropolitan Police both during the review process and the investigatory phrase.

“I think that is all that any parent would want when their child is missing,” he said. “They’ve uncovered new evidence and we hope that the appeals that go out next week will lead to further new evidence that helps fill in pieces of the jigsaw and moves at least a step closer to finding Madeleine and those responsible.” A reconstruction of the “latest, most detailed understanding” of the events around the time Madeleine went missing will be shown on BBC Crimewatch. It comes after the Metropolitan Police revealed a vast log of mobile phone traffic could be the key to finding out what happened to the-then threeyear-old. Met Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said it is hoped it will produce new witnesses, but a conclusion to the case “is not imminent”. Met detectives have interviewed 442 people as part of their review-turned-investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance. It has identified 41 people of interest, including 15 UK nationals. They hope to track down as many people who were present in Praia da

also known for his success with Last of the Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances – added: ‘This has been fun – a great opportunity to work with David Jason again and to suggest how things at that corner shop might look today.’ Sir David, 73, said: ‘I am sure there is an audience out there who would like to see what Granville has been getting up to in the corner shop. It will be a great family show for Christmas and a fitting tribute to the legacy of Arkwright.’ Mark Freeland, the BBC’s controller of UK comedy production, said: ‘Having the

chance to see Arkwright’s beloved shop again, now run by Granville, I hope will bring broad grins to lots and lots of faces at Christmas.’ In 2006, Arkwright’s original shop – a hairdressing salon which was converted for filming – was saved from demolition after a campaign group fought off council proposals to bulldoze it as part of wider regeneration plans. Two years later, it was put up for auction but failed to meet its reserve price. The BBC has confirmed it would start filming the new episode next month but had not yet decided whether it would be shot in the original location.

Crimewatch Appeal For Madeleine

Luz, Portugal, on or around May 3, 2007, as possible. Dr McCann, speaking outside the General Medical Council (GMC) in London, also said the press needed tougher, independent regulation in order to protect the lives of ordinary people. He talked about the need for speedy arbitration for victims of press intrusion and misreporting in the light of the Leveson Inquiry, at which he gave evidence. He said: “Ordinary people’s lives are being damaged eve-

ry day of the week by press intrusion, by lies being printed or exaggeration.” It “personally troubles him and his wife” that “stories are published with no regard to Madeleine’s safety, to the investigation itself or whether they will be putting Madeleine or others in danger or alerting those responsible”. He highlighted the need for an independent body that could act quickly, saying: “We have absolutely no confidence that the press barons can regulate themselves.”

freshly minted T The R oy al Mint has created the first ever royal christening coin in the uk to mark Prince George’s baptism later this month. The limited edition gold “kilo coin” is being sold for £50,000 - but a more affordable “Brilliant uncirculated” £5 coin has also been produced and costs just £13.

The £5 coin has been made in silver, tradition states that crossing a baby’s palm with silver is said to bring good health and prosperity to new born - and gold to commemorate the royal celebration. The Royal Mint said it has received thousands of pre-orders from

within the UK and around the world. The coin features the Lily Font from the Tower of London, two harp-playing cherubs and the royal motto ‘’Dieu et mon droit’’ (God and my right). The special coin, created ahead of George’s christening on October 23, was first approved by his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Dr Kevin Clancy, director of the Royal Mint Museum, said: “It’s symbolic and it’s got dignity about it. Working that out and pitching it at the right level isn’t an easy thing to do. We’ve had to bring the royal couple along with us on this.” The Queen and Chancellor George Osborne

also had to sign off on the design. Dr Clancy added: “They have considered it to be a good design for the subject. You don’t necessarily get a huge amount of detail beyond that. But that they like it is good enough for us.” The designer of the coin, John Bergdahl, said it usually takes up to two years to produce a new coin, but the christening edition had to be made in around seven months because of the unknown details about the royal baby, such as its gender and name. Mr Bergdahl said: “The design is baroque, a style that has been reborn many times and often featured in royal artwork and traditions. One element that I knew I wanted to incorporate was the Lily Font from the Tower of London, which is a strong tradition in christenings for the Royal Family. “The motto is traditional and sums up the expectation carried by a young child, born to reign - regardless of gender - for the first time ever. Hopefully it will be timeless and it will still look as good in 100 years’ time as it does now.”

doh - Season 26 of the Simpsons Confirmed

he Simpsons is to continue for a 26th season, cementing the show’s status as the longest-running animated series in American Tv history. The Fox broadcast network confirmed the show was being renewed, describing the animated series as “one of the greatest sitcoms of our time”.

“For more than a quarter of a century, The Simpsons has captured the hearts and minds of fans in a way that transcends ages, languages and cultures,” said chairman of entertainment Kevin Reilly. “It’s one of the greatest sitcoms of our time, and I’m looking forward to yet another landmark season.” The show’s renewal comes after executive producer Al Jean revealed last month that one of the main characters will die in a forthcoming episode. The death is now scheduled for the 26th season. “This is great; no end in sight, except for one character who will die next season,” Mr Jean said in response to the show’s renewal. The Simpsons was created by Matt Groening and

first aired on Fox in 1989. The popularity of Homer and his family helped the fledgling network become a major player in the TV industry. The show is broadcast in more than 100 countries and 50 languages, has won 28 Primetime Emmy awards and has even been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 25th season premiered with Homerland, a spoof of thriller Homeland, drawing in 6.4 million viewers, according to Fox. The series has attracted guest voice stars spanning the full spectrum of popular culture, from late actress Elizabeth Taylor, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, physicist Stephen Hawking and former prime minister Tony Blair.

platypus’ great adventure A young platypus has survived a nine-mile (15km) journey wedged in the engine bay of a truck, after driver Cameron Blaseotto drove through a flooded creek in the Australian capital Canberra.

Mr Blaseotto, 18, only realised the furry creature was there when he heard a scratching sound coming from his truck once he reached his friend’s house. ACT Parks and Conservation Service’s Brett McNamara said it was remarkable the platypus was not hurt: “How this animal was able to climb up inside, hang on, and then drive all the way back into Canberra is a truly remarkable story,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. “One of a kind, a one in a million event.” Mr Blaseotto affectionately nicknamed the animal Hilux, after the

brand of his vehicle. Hilux has been released into a stream in Canberra. “I’d like to think that it’s heading

back to its burrow to tell a remarkable and fascinating tale of adventure,” Mr McNamara said.

entions that Changed our Lives day lives, like the zip, first invented in 1913. However the

technology was slow to catch on with the public. It wasn’t until Esquire magazine heralded the zip as the ‘ n ewe s t tailoring idea for men’ in the 1950s that they really took off. In 1917, 24,000 zippers were sold. Today, Japan’s YKK, which makes

close to half of all the zips in the world, churns out 7.2 billion zips a year. The invention of the world’s first laptop, the Epson HX-20, in 1981, shows just how rapidly technology is moving forward. The Epson HX20 had a four-line by 20-character LCD screen, a cassette tape for data storage and even a small printer. This was all packaged into a stylish silver casing and the entire system had a battery life of around 50 years. The list also shows just how gadgets have made a huge impact on our health and fitness over the last century, starting with the design of

the artificial heart in 1941.This was followed swiftly by the kidney dialysis machine three years later, the breathalyser in 1955, the hearing aid a year later and the pacemaker in 1958. Technology has also become an integrated and much loved part of our kitchens thanks to inventions like Pyrex in 1915, the pop up toaster in 1919 and the electric kettle in 1922. 1925 saw the arrival of the can opener, just seven years before the introduction of the electric version. The Teasmade has been brightening many a morning since 1933 and the microwave oven and Kenwood’s

food mixer have been helping us make light work of cooking since the 40s. ‘When we talk about gadgets, we often talk in terms of the 80s onwards – of phones, laptops and music systems,’ said Gadget Show Live event manager Katie Tozer. ‘But gadgets have been around for hundreds of years. This list, which takes us right back to 1913 with the invention of the zip, a gadget that was so influential it’s still in daily use today – is just the tip of the iceberg and it shows just how integral and essential they have become to the way we live, work and enjoy life today.’

The Patrol, the first British feature film about the conflict in Afghanistan was named Film of the Festival at the Raindance Film Festival. Writer and director Tom Petch said he was “really pleased to win” at the prestigious event in London.

“The festival has curated a great selection of films, and judges including Julian Assange gave it an individual voice. It provided a unique opportunity for The Patrol to raise the issues of British involvement in Afghanistan.” Set in Helmand Province around 2006/07, the film tells the story of a British Army patrol sent to protect an Afghan town against the Taliban. But early in the Helmand occupation, forces were stretched and the soldiers are ordered to lengthen their patrol. The film explores the tensions that arise and questions the strategy and equipment the soldiers are expected to fight with. “I wanted to portray conflict in a way the public doesn’t see it,” explained Petch, who is a former Army officer himself. “My film raises a question that back in 2006 John Reid told us that we were deploying to into Helmand Province as part of a reconstruction effort.

Brit film about afghan War Wins award

“In fact he’s often misquoted but I think the press conference he gave in Kabul went something like ‘he’d be very happy if we left after three years without firing a single shot’ because we were protecting the reconstruction effort. “Here we are pulling out in 2014 with 444 dead and very little reconstruction seems to have happened, and those questions haven’t really been answered.” The Patrol was actually filmed in Morocco. The cast was sent on a boot camp and trained in drills to learn basic soldiering techniques. It was shot in 40 degree heat - similar temperatures to the Afghan summer - and the actors were deprived of sleep on location for realism. “The soldiers use the language they would be using so a lot of it is abbreviations, a lot of it is slang. I think you can get what is going on from the emotion of the characters rather than what they say,” added Petch. The film doesn’t judge the British Army: not the fighting nor the bravery of the soldiers, rather the purpose of the mission. And the timing of the release is pertinent as the process of withdrawing British combat troops from Afghanistan is well under way and due to complete by the end of 2014.

MovIeS, as we all know cost big bucks, especially big effects-laden summer blockbusters, so studios need to be as sure as they can be that they’ve got it right. Scripts are routinely sent back for r e write after rewrite, often a story will be snatched from t h e principal writers to be handed to a respected script doctor to refine and polish the script, before and sometimes even during production. even dialogue often benefits from last wasn’t Scottish either, SNL comic Chris Farley had completed 90% of the voice role

SIR Richard Branson’s Caribbean island home on his private island necker, has been rebuilt after being destroyed by fire two years ago. Actress, kate Winslet, and her two children, were among 20 guests staying at the Great house on necker Island when flames razed it to the ground.

Winslet carried Sir Richard’s 90-year-old mother, Eve, to safety after the property caught fire when it was struck by lightning during a tropical storm in August 2011. Speaking after the fire Winslet said: “I will never forget Richard placing his arms around both my children as we were there watching the flames.” She said he told her: “At the end of the day, what you realise is that all that matters is the people you love. Everything else is just stuff. And none of that stuff really matters.” The rebuilt house has been remodelled on the original design, with a few innovations. It now has a 1,500 sq ft master suite with spectacular views of the ocean. Virgin boss Sir Richard said: “Necker Island has been my home for more than 30 years and for me it is the most beautiful place in the world. The brand new Great House is the heart of the island and I’m thrilled with the results.

This signals a new dawn for Necker, which I’m very excited about.” When he is not staying there himself, Sir Richard rents out the house - for £37,500 a night. It accommodates up to 30 adults and six children. As well as the master suite, there are eight bedrooms

and a separate bunkroom together with six Bali houses. Necker Island, which covers 74 acres and is located in the British Virgin Islands, is normally hired out exclusively. However, on a selected number of weeks, known as ‘Celebration Weeks’ during the year it is possible to rent an individual room.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples

Chip Off The Old Block You may remember, a few years ago, when Boris Becker was claiming that he hadn’t got a girl pregnant and how his denials were completely quashed when the little baby was born. The child looked exactly like a mini Boris and there

was no doubt in anyone’s mind who the father was.

Now it appears that Woody Allen’s son, with Mia Darrow could be Frank Sinatra’s son. I think that the words “could be” are a gross under exaggeration but I will let you judge for yourselves! I find it hard to believe that it has taken people this long to make the observation.

What A State

What a ridiculous state of affairs that a disagreement in the government can cause a shutdown and possibly cause a country like the United States to go back into recession therefore affecting the rest of the world. This is a childish standoff that could easily have been avoided. The Republican Party doesn’t want Obama’s healthcare plan to go through government and is using his policy as their excuse for their actions.

It just serves to show us that it isn’t just our shouting, baying politicians that are pathetic and self-interested.

What a shameful way to behave. America is currently faring much better and the opposition just want to break things down again so that they can blame the President’s policies and hopefully win the next election. The shutdown means that there is now only one person

guarding the American/Canada border and drug trials on cancer research have been put on hold. It also means that sanctions on Iran are difficult to monitor. I think they need to borrow our own Boris Johnson for a while. He would have it sorted in no time!

Close Shave

Cole Turkey Cheryl Cole has said that she would like Marilyn Monroe to play her in a film about her life. I think she would be an excellent choice since she has been dead since the 60’s.

Where the hell do they get the celebrities from these days? The moon? I think Sylvester Stallone would make a great double for me, although he wouldn’t look as good as me in a frock!

Rotten Apple

The fact that Samsung is reporting record profits whilst apple is starting to struggle doesn’t surprise me one little bit. The iphone has looked the same for far too long whilst Samsung phones have adapted into sleek and desirable objects. I reported last year that iphones will be available of car

boot sales in the next five years. I reckon that it will be a lot sooner than that.

Apple recently brought out some new models which look exactly like the older models. These days, people embrace change and the iphone is already starting to look old fashioned. The same thing happened to Nokia a few years ago because of their lack of ability to redesign and develop.

Two 14 year old pupils in a Lancashire school have been banned from classes because they have beards. The school policy is quite strict and parents are aware of their rules. The boys are Muslim and it is part of their religion that they don’t shave off their beards. So WHY are they attending a Roman Catholic school in the first place. There will now be another major drama about this issue and the school will probably have to make an exception for them. I don’t see why they should but it will happen if past cases are anything to go by. Of course these boys are most likely enjoying the

drama that is unfolding around them, but the beard situation is probably instigated by their parents. If you live in another country you should abide by the rules of that country. If you work for an organisation or go to a school, the rules apply to everyone and not just those to feel like it! When I moved here a number of years ago, I learned enough of the language to get by before I left the UK. Within a short time I was speaking great Spanish and I still find that I am respected for it by the Canarian people that I come into contact with. We have to integrate ourselves in a better way, just as the immigrants in the UK have to be a part of the country that we have left. We are the immigrants here and yet I often hear British people moaning about the system and the way they do things in Spain. The answer is plain and simple. Leave your moaning head in Britain and live the life here or go back to the wonderful UK and moan to your heart’s content!

I predict that Samsung will be the next big thing for a few years but now that Microsoft has bought Nokia, I can see the company making a big comeback. In the last decade, phones were relatively cheap and people could afford to change them more readily. I suspect that it will be harder to sell your iphone to someone else if you don’t get it done very soon as the market will be flooded with the things. Well, that is me ringing off for another week. Enjoy yourselves!

hoBBIT prosthetics and Frodo’s sword are among the items up for sale at an auction house in Los Angeles. Fans of The Lord of the Rings are being given the chance to bid on hairy hobbit feet or Frodo’s sword in a new auction of the trilogy’s props.

The items from Peter Jackson’s films are being put up for sale by Julien’s Auction in Beverly Hills on December 5th. The prosthetic feet worn by character Samwise Gamgee are estimated to fetch between £9,000 and £18,000. Other highlights from Middle Earth include the sword of Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Wood, estimated to fetch between £62,000 and £124,000, and a wizard staff belonging to Gandalf the White (played by Sir Ian McKellen), which could sell for as much as £43,000. Martin Nolan, executive director of the auction house, said: “It has been more than a decade since the first of the trilogy films was released and in that time only a handful of items from these films have ever been publicly offered for sale. Demand for this memorabilia is extraordinarily high and the scale and quality of this remarkable collection is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans and collectors.” The total auction is expecting to fetch up to £900,000 from the sale of 80 lots.

Lord of the rings props to go under Hammer

The auction house said that the rare props come from a private collection and is the second largest collection of Lord of the Rings movie memorabilia, second only to Michael Jackson’s own official archive of props.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King are adapted from J R R Tolkein’s fantasy novels of the same name. The story follows the journey of mild-mannered hobbit Frodo, who travels across the treacherous ter-

rains of Middle Earth to destroy a precious ring that would make its wearer dangerously powerful. The films grossed nearly £2.4bn at the worldwide box office, one of the largest-grossing film series in history.

Jackson adapted Tolkein’s prequel The Hobbit into a second trilogy of films set in Middle Earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was released last year and has grossed more than £620m at the worldwide box office.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard

The Butterflies of Tenerife Monarch butterfly

There are a lot more butterfly species in Tenerife than it would at first appear. We all see the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexcippus) with its large reddish-orange wings that are veined in black but what other types live on the island? Well, for a start there is the Canary red admiral (Vanessa vulcania) that looks a lot like the red admiral (V.atalanta) that is a frequent visitor to gardens in the UK, but it is a bit smaller. The latter species can sometimes be seen here too but the Canary Islands endemic variety is the more frequently seen of

Vanessa vulcania

the two, especially in the north of the island. Red admiral caterpillars feed on stinging nettles (Urtica dioica) and others in the Urtica genus and if we have these plants growing on our land then if we leave them to grow it will help the butterflies. The painted lady (Cynthia cardui) has a caterpillar that mostly feeds on various types of thistle that grow on Tenerife. In wet winters these plants grow well and there are a lot more of these butterflies around by spring. They migrate and many go all the way to mainland Europe and Britain. The African migrant (Catopsilia florella) is a large butterfly and it flies very quickly. It

is quite often seen in gardens and around flower borders in the resorts of the island. The males have yellow wings and the females are a paler creamy colour. This butterfly was able to colonise Tenerife because the shrub Cassia didymobotrya and the tree C. spectabilis are often grown for their ornamental value and they are food-plants for this insect’s larvae. Both plants are species of senna and

Small White on Lantana

fly that can be seen flying on Tenerife. Its caterpillar feeds on various species of vetch (Vicia) and trefoil (Trifolium). It tends to be seen over farmland and waste ground.

webbianus) but only high on the mountains. They can usually be seen flying around the scrub-land near the hotel and tourist centre up on Mt Teide. The cardinal or Pandora but-

tends to live in colonies. It can be found all over the island and has brown and coppery-orange wings with black spots on the forewings. The caterpillar eats various species of dock and sorrel (Rumex). Two mainly brown butterflies you might see on Tenerife are the Canary speckled wood (Pararge xiphiodes) and the meadow brown (Maniola jurtina). Both species have caterpillars that feed on various types of grass. The Canary speckled wood is usually found in semi-shaded areas where there are plenty of bushes and trees around. It has brown wings that are speckled, as its name suggests, with a lighter yellowish-orange. The meadow brown is a very common butterfly in the UK where it lives in grassy areas,

Plants to grow to attract the butterflies

(Lantana camara) is a pretty shrub with yellow and red or purplish-blue and white flowers and most adult butterflies will feed on its nectar. Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) have yellow, orange or red flowers and this is an alternative food-plant for most white butterfly species. If you have a lawn then leaving clover to grow in it will attract the African grass blue.

The most important plant to grow in our gardens to attract monarch butterflies is the tropical or scarlet milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). It is the food-plant of the monarch caterpillar but the flowers provide nectar for adult butterflies and other pollinating insects. The lantana or Spanish flag

have bright yellow flowers. Another very yellow butterfly you may well see in the evergreen laurel forested areas on the island is the Cleopatra (Gonepteryx cleobule). It only lives in wooded areas because its caterpillar needs species of buckthorn as a food source and on the island we have Rhamnus glandulosa. The clouded yellow (Colias croceus) is a migratory butter-

Monarch caterpillar

The whites are related to the yellow butterflies and the small white (Pieris rapae) is very common. The larva feeds on species of cabbage (Brassica) and nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus). One butterfly that has actually benefited from the urban sprawl of resorts is the African grass blue. (Zizeeria knysna). Its caterpillars feed on clover species such as the white clover (Trifolium repens) that often grows as a weed in lawns. I have seen this tiny species doing well on a patch of grass near a shopping centre in Los Cristianos and around the flower borders in a square in Puerto de la Cruz. Another blue butterfly you can expect to see on Tenerife is the Canary blue (Cyclyrius

terfly (Pandoriana pandora) is a fritillary and lives in wooded areas. Its caterpillar feeds on violet species such as the sweet violet (Viola odorata) that can be found in the evergreen laurel forests and along woodland pathways. I have seen them in the Erjos area and by the forests above San Jose de los Llanos. The small copper (Lycaena phlaeas) used to be a very common British butterfly and still is in some places, though it

Canary Blues

fields and heaths. In Tenerife it is not so common, presumably because there is not much in the way of grassland here. I have seen them in Ruigomez and around Agua Garcia which suggests this butterfly is more likely to be seen in the north of the island. All of the butterflies found on Tenerife can only live in locations where their food-plants grow so if we want to see more of these beautiful insects flying then this is something we need to think about.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

uK food Scene Changes

They are the foods that the average uk shopper hadn’t even heard of just a decade ago, but now Britons can’t live without chorizo, sweet chilli sauce and prosecco, according to a survey of changing culinary habits.

Research carried out by food magazine Olive found that although the spicy Spanish sausage was unheard of ten years ago, chorizo is a staple part of the diet of 42% of those surveyed. Furthermore, 35% said they can’t live without a bottle of sweet chilli sauce alongside the ketchup and mayonnaise with almost a quarter rating a bottle of prosecco, a sparkling Italian wine, as a ‘must have’ in the wine rack. The survey also found a change at the top in terms of who the nation rates as its favourite celebrity chef. A fifth now favours Nigel Slater, with the Hairy Bikers and Michel Roux Jnr also proving popular with foodies. But our favourite television chefs from a decade ago have declined in popularity. Delia Smith, who topped a similar poll compiled by the magazine in 2003, gained just 7% of the vote this time around. Faring little better were Nigella Lawson, with just 9% of the vote and Jamie Oliver, who polled just 11%. The survey also found that more than half of us are cooking meals from scratch more often than we did 10 years ago but, possibly due to the recession hitting us in the wallets, only a third of us are dining out more. When we do eat out, 40% of us say that chain restaurants are what make us most unhappy about the modern food scene, followed by bad service and the ‘prohibitively expensive’ cost of eating out. Cupcakes were rated the favourite food trend of the decade with locally produced seasonal food, farmers’ markets and ‘diverse cuisine’ increasing in popularity. Olive editor Christine Hayes said: ‘In the last decade, we have witnessed a period of profound change in the UK food scene. We are far more diverse in our tastes and seek out great value whether cooking at home or eat-

ing out at home and abroad. Nigel Slater’s relaxed cooking style and the seasonal, often home-grown, ingredients

he uses chimes with the increased trend of using ingredients when they are at their best.’

The Magic Italian Cake A while ago somebody shared this recipe with me and said that I must try it… It is a really nice cake or dessert to impress your friends with. When you make it, the layers within the cake simply switch over and swap positions.. Truly amazing! The only thing that is Italian about this cake is the Ricotta cheese. It tastes

great but my biggest tip is to leave it for a couple of days and the cake is even tastier. If you want to be lazy you can use and instant cake mix, and change it to whatever flavour you prefer, but I always use chocolate and stick to that simple all in one cake mix that I shared with you on our 100th edition.

Ingredients:

Method:

The cake mix: 175g plain flour 175g Margarine 175g sugar 3 eggs 1 flat teaspoon baking powder 200g melted dark chocolate

Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a 9×13 inch pan with baking paper. In a large bowl, put all the cake ingredients in and mix it all together with an electric mixer for a couple of minutes. Set aside. In another bowl, using a hand mixer, beat together the ricotta cheese, eggs, sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Now remember - The layers switch during the baking time! Pour the cake mixture into the prepared baking dish. Spread to fill the dish evenly. Once the cake mixture is in place, carefully pour the cheese mixture evenly over the top of the cake mixture. Spread to cover the cake layer as best as you can. Bake the cake at 180°C for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before topping. Once the cake is cool, make your angel delight or instant mousse by following the directions on the packet. Spread the pudding mixture over the top of the cooled cake. Cover the cake and refrigerate at least 6 hours before serving. It tastes even better the next day.

The Italian Part: 900g ricotta cheese 4 eggs 150g sugar 1 tsp. Vanilla essence For the topping: Chocolate angel delight or instant mousse

Next week I will be sharing some wonderful Halloween ideas with you so you can get ready for your party!

The 1980 British Motor Show had three stars - the Ford Escort Mk3, Austin Metro, and this, the RollsRoyce Silver Spirit. Rather like the Metro, the RollsRoyce Silver Spirit was really a clever rebody of the outgoing Silver Shadow - brought up to date with a little more power, and more angular styling that reflected design fashions... of 1978. Yes, it really does look like an upscaled Ford Cortina. Although it failed to move the

motoring world on one iota, the Silver Spirit remained wonderfully cossetting to drive, and to ride in, and sold perfect well through some tough times. The 1989 Silver Spirit II update added fuel injection, more power, anti-lock brakes and a revised interior. the III and IV were further subtle upgrades to an increasingly aged car. In 1994, the Flying Spur was added to the range, complete with Bentleyesque turbocharging, creating an agreeable final flourish for the ‘Spirit. The Silver Spur was a longwheelbase offshoot and outlasted the short-wheelbase car on which it was based.

The Adjustment Bureau Editor Recommends Channel 4 - 21:00 - 23:05 Matt Damon and emily Blunt star in Bourne ultimatum screenwriter George nolfi’s directorial debut - a romance meets sci-fi thriller, based on a short story by Philip k Dick that appeared in a 1954 edition of the short-lived orbit Science Fiction magazine.

David Norris (Damon) is a youthful congressman running for the Senate in New York - and everything couldn’t be going more smoothly for him, until two events take place: an encounter with Elise Sellas (Blunt) and an episode of public drunkenness. The former should spell happiness for him, as he

and the attractive dancer hit it off immediately, but all attempts to further the relationship are consistently thwarted; the latter incident was bad enough to spell the end of his political career - but however much he subsequently tries to walk away from high office, the more he seems destined for it. What he doesn’t initially realise is that he is part of The Plan, overseen by the shadowy men of the Adjustment Bureau, who are determined to implement their grand design, whatever the costs. But, as Norris begins to slot the clues together, things start to get dangerous for him and his would-be love.

Stephen Fry: Out There Editor Recommends BBC 2 - 21:00 - 22:00

In a new BBC Two series, Stephen Fry: out There, Stephen travels across the globe to find out what it means to be gay. visiting uganda, America, Russia, Brazil and India, Stephen encounters some of the most notorious homophobes on the planet to try to understand the origin of their beliefs; he also meets victims of homophobic abuse.

The first episode sees Stephen’s journey start close to home as he meets Sir Elton John and David

Furnish to talk about their experiences coming out, their civil partnership and decision to raise a child together. He also meets a young Iranian man seeking refuge in the UK as he faces the death penalty in his home country for being gay. Stephen then travels to Uganda - where the government is proposing a new law that would put gay people to death - and meets government ministers and religious leaders who support the bill. He sees the impact this proposed legislation is having on the lives of gay men and women, and has an emotional conversation with Stosh, a young gay woman who was a victim of ‘corrective rape’.

indy Car franchitti fractures Spine

BRITISh racing driver Dario Franchitti fractured his SheFFIeLD Wednesday striker Gary Madine has been jailed for 18 months after he was found guilty of two separate nightclub attacks. he was jailed at Leeds Crown Court after being found guilty by a jury following a week-long trial last month.

spine after crashing at the IndyCar Grand Prix in hou-

ston last weekend.

His car became airborne and then

hit a fence as he tried to pass rival Takuma Sato on a fast section of the

course. The crash happened on the final lap, sending debris into crowd, injuring 13 spectators. The four-time IndyCar series champion, born in Bathgate, West Lothian, also suffered a concussion and broken ankle but was awake when he arrived at hospital. Franchitti’s team boss Chip Ganassi said: “His ankle is a little sore; his back is a little sore. He is going to be OK.” He is not expected to need surgery for the spinal fracture. A statement from the race promoters read: “An IndyCar official and IndyCar driver, Dario Franchitti, along with two fans were transferred to an area hospital for evaluation. 11 fans were additionally evaluated on site.” Sato appeared to lose control of the back of his car as he rounded turn five, causing him to collide with Franchitti. “On the last lap I caught the marbles and brushed the wall and lost momentum,” he said. “A couple cars passed me as I was off line and in turn five. I got very loose and Dario and I came together. Hopefully Dario is OK.” Franchitti’s wife, the actress Ashley Judd, who he separated from earlier this year, tweeted: “Thank you for the prayers for @dariofranchitti I have only clothes on my back & the dogs but that’s all that we need & we are on our way.” It is nearly two years since one of Franchitti’s best friends, fellow Briton Dan Wheldon, died after a 15-car crash in the IndyCar season-finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Scotsman has won four IndyCar Series titles since joining the competition in 2007.

The Championship footballer, 23, who has a previous conviction for knocking a man out in a Carlisle pub, punched Wednesday fan Daniel Beresford in the Paris Bar in Sheffield city centre

in February last year, breaking his nose. Four weeks later, he punched bricklayer and Sheffield United fan Reece Hall in the city’s Viper Room club, shattering his cheekbone. Judge Rodney Jameson QC sentenced the footballer, to six months for the Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) on Mr Beresford, and 12 months for the offence of Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) against Mr Hall. Madine will now automatically be sacked by his club Alison Dorrell, defending Madine - known by some Wednesday fans as Goal Machine - said he had thrown away his talent due to “drink, childish behaviour and a temper problem”. “He is not an asset to his club anymore,” she said, and added he would struggle to restart his career after serving a prison sentence. Judge Jameson said the assaults occurred when the footballer “lashed out” when drunk with “little, if any, thought for the consequences”. He said: “When sober there is no reason

to suppose that you would misbehave but I have to sentence you for serious offences which reflect the other side of your character. “The side which comes out when you are in drink, which causes unprovoked violence, causing serious injuries to innocent members of the public.” The judge said Madine had chosen not

to “suppress” that side of his character. However, Judge Jameson said other professional footballers had rebuilt careers after serving time in jail and there was no reason why he could not do the same. Madine, who used to earn £5,000 a week, was also told that he would have to

pay £1,500 in compensation to Mr Beresford and £4,200 court costs. Ms Dorrell believed this would be difficult for the defendant, who has not been paid by the club since he was convicted last month. She said was he struggling to pay a mortgage on the house where his family lived.

www.tenerife-weekly.com England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has accepted substantial libel damages for a “serious and defamatory allegation” in a Specsavers advert which implied he might have tampered with his bat during the Ashes.

His solicitor, Louise Prince, told Mr Justice Tugendhat that the “Should’ve gone to Specsavers” advert was published on the company’s Twitter account and Facebook page in August, and also appeared in various newspapers and magazines. Accompanied by a photo of Pietersen, it contained the statement: “’Bat tampering’ in the #Ashes? Apparently Hot Spot should’ve gone to Specsavers.” Ms Prince said the allegation of bat tampering was completely untrue and without any foundation whatsoever.

Tenerife Weekly - 11th October 2013 - 17th October 2013

Specsavers Fail

Hot Spot is an infrared imaging system used in cricket to determine

whether the ball has struck the batsman, bat or pad. Specsavers Optical Group

Ltd accepted that Pietersen did not behave in the manner suggested, apologised

and had already removed the advert from circulation. It had also agreed to pay

53

him substantial damages and his legal costs. The group’s solicitor, Niri Shan, said it did not intend to imply that Pietersen may have tampered with his bat. It acknowledged that the allegation was untrue and apologised for the distress and embarrassment caused. England retained the Ashes this year but a row erupted after an Australian TV channel accused players, including Pietersen, of using silicone tape on their bats to prevent edges showing up on Hot Spot. At the time Pietersen reacted to the report by tweeting: “Horrible journalism yet again! My name brought up in Hot Spot crisis suggesting I use silicon to prevent nicks showing! Such hurtful lies.” The England and Wales Cricket Board said it would take legal action against Channel 9, and has since received an apology.

Driving Ban For Brawn says Mercedes will rotate staff if Triple Jump Idowu 22 races in 2014

Former Olympic triple jumper Phillips Idowu has been banned from driving for two years after getting behind the wheel while drunk. The 34-yearold, from Epping in Essex, pleaded guilty to driving his white Land Rover in the town’s Bridge Hill while two and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.

Chelmsford magistrates also ordered him to do 50 hours of community service following the incident at about 9.30am on September 20. His solicitor, Joe Life, told the court he had been out

with friends the previous night and had returned home to sleep, but was forced to leave: “He just got in the car because circumstances forced him to leave the house in a hurry and he was driving a short distance.” Declining to go into detail, she added: “He planned to stay at hotel which was under a mile away to get away from the circumstances which had unfolded at the house.” Ms Life said Idowu had co-operated with police and regularly helps charities and schools. Described as “unemployed”, Idowu has no income and is currently living off savings, the court heard. He had asked to be fined rather than given community service as he had a work op-

portunity abroad starting next month. Magistrate Jeremy Bachelor ignored the request, however, ordering him to complete the unpaid work within the next 12 months. As well as the driving ban Idowu was also fined £145 and ordered to pay £85 costs. Idowu won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and World Championship gold in Berlin the following year. He had been tipped for gold at last year’s London Olympics but suffered a leg and hip injury and failed to make the final. Idowu has stopped short of retiring from track and field competition but has announced he is taking a break from athletics “for the foreseeable future”.

Mercedes Team Principal Ross Brawn has said that they will have to start rotating personnel if next season’s calendar remains fixed at 22 races.

The FIA’s announcement of its provisional 2014 calendar at the end of last month leaves teams facing up to what could be their longest season yet. The presence of three provisional races - Korea, New Jersey and Mexico - means it could still be trimmed back, but if that’s not the case then Mercedes for one will seek to limit the number of races team members can attend. “I think 22 races will definitely be the point at which we start rotating,” Brawn said. “Because it’s not just 22

races; there’s four tests as well and the pre-season tests start four weeks earlier than they have previously. “We’re testing in January and going through racing until the end of November, so it is pretty heavy.” Brawn cited NASCAR which comprises 36 races per season as an example of a racing series in which teams rotate members, principally mechanics. He added that Mercedes had already trained team members for pit stops should the need arise. “We’re looking at strengthening the team so we can start rotation. I think there are other motorsports that do that like NASCAR, so it’s feasible,” he said. “It’s mainly mechanics and garage technicians and so on, so you’re talking about half a

dozen or eight people. “The challenge is always the performance, particularly with pit stops. It’s something we’ve focused on this year, to have some rotation at pit stops, so that if someone is ill or can’t make a race for some reason, then we know we have a good performance in the crew. “We always make sure there are all sorts of people we can substitute. They’re ‘on the bench’ ready to come off.” However, Brawn added that the idea might not stretch to the team’s senior engineering personnel such as himself. “I think at the engineering level it will be quite difficult. I think where we intend to focus there is to give the guys more support in the factory so they can have time off when they get back,” he said.

magnificent marino in four goal romp Balduino CAn it get much better than four quality goals, a clean sheet, and a complete team contribution, including all three subs? In this 4-0 home win over union viera it did , what really impressed me was the way the CD Marino battle for everything and work for each other.

With both teams in the top four it made a great game, home goalie Alberto did well in the opening minutes to block a close shot by Ramon, luckily when it rebounded

Richard Jimenez to him the Viera player could only hook it over the bar. Marino were already testing the visitors, Pulido made good ground on the right despite constant digs from his marker and Yosimar was creating some promising openings. It took just 13 minutes to unlock the Viera defence with a ball in from the left, it caused panic and Ramon put the ball in his own net to make it 1-0. Murci nearly doubled the lead when the ball fell to him in the box, his turn was sharp but his shot was a bit high. Viera’s main man Peraza worked some space at the other end and put a tempting ball across

the face of the Marino goal but no one reacted quickly enough. Yosimar tested Li in the other goal and he was equal to it with a tip over the bar. Marino had the best of the play but had to keep an eye on Viera’s breaks, when they did get through they found home goalie Alberto in majestic form, he made three breath taking full length saves. Marino had the greater hunger for the win and got the second goal with a real cracker from Rich-

ard Jimenez, the ball broke to him outside the goal area and he thundered his volley into the net. Murci was keen to get in on the act, Li just managed to block his shot at the near post. There was plenty of life still in Viera, they broke forward again but Eslava showed the spirit in the Marino camp by tracking back and clearing the ball. So 2-0 up in the middle of a baking Sunday, time to slacken off a bit – no chance of that with CD Marino, they were after more goals. Viera tried to fight back, Alberto continued his sizzling form with another inspiring save but eager reinforcements were waiting to stake their claim for a blue home shirt. Lamine was the first sub, replacing Yosimar, the former Ibarra player got stuck in and set up the third goal. It was pure persistence that forced an error out of the Viera defender and Lamine nicked the ball and laid on a perfect pass for Balduino to tap it in. Next up was Nabil for Pulido, the ex Granadilla midfielder slotted in nicely and linked up well with his team mates. The last sub was a real local boy, Luis Sierra for Balduino, he joined the attack and within minutes had a couple of close efforts and caused Li problems in goal. Still the wave of blue kept advancing,

goalie Li was getting a bit nervous by now and Murci took full advantage beating his marker and then luring Li out before slipping the ball under him and into the goal. Full marks to Union Viera for making it such an enjoyable match, they had enough left to go for a last minute consolation but their free kick was taken confidently by Alberto. This Saturday it’s another short sea voyage to play Vecindario in Gran Canaria with a win in mind to consolidate second spot.

Barn Doors, Banjos, And Off Key Finishes Cost CD Tenerife

It’s an odd phrase “couldn’t hit a barn door with a banjo” but it probably applies to the spray it here, there, and everywhere shooting of CD Tenerife. Boosted by last weeks first win they had good reason to feel hopeful for the trip to table topping Recreativo but despite having much of the game they squandered too many chances and lost 2-1.

There was some bad luck involved like Chechu hitting the post after four minutes but Aridane’s trusty head was working without a radar as he wasted a couple of set ups from Cristo. The defence had a slightly different look with Spain’s boy wonder Salva Ruiz getting a run out at left back in

place of Raul Llorente, it was a bit of a surprise but handy for the Valencia loanee ahead of national Under 19 duty in Hungary. Tenerife looked every bit as good as their lofty hosts in the first half, Ayoze started the game as a reward for last weeks match winning performance but he too passed up some sitters to leave it all square at the break. Montoro showed how goals should be scored with a rasping shot just after the restart, a blow but it didn’t silence Tenerife. Suso and Rivero replaced Ros and Cristo and after good work from Suso, home defender Ruyman was slow to pick up Ayoze and he tied the scores. Tenerife suffered a classic sucker punch as Recreativo hit back with another well struck goal, this one from Arana. The chances kept coming for Tenerife but the killer touch wasn’t

there and when Ricardo was sent off for a second yellow card with ten minutes left, they couldn’t stage another revival. The club lodged an appeal against one of Ricardo’s yellows, if it doesn’t work he can join coaching assistant Roberto Perara in the stands, he copped a red on the way to the dressing room for enquiring about the refs parentage. This Sunday the ghosts of glories past return as coach Oltra and forward Alfaro, driving forces of the 2009 Primera promotion, return for the first time, now with Mallorca. After dropping out of the big time they were expected to make a swift return but have been leaking goals and heaping pressure on Oltra in a disasterous run of results. The two former heroes will get a warm welcome and an even warmer farewell if they leave the three points behind.

No Trophy To Subida A Tamaimo, The Uphill Slog That Excites The West Coast Herald CB Canarias League Start

There can be no second season syndrome for CB Canarias as they look to build on an impressive return to Spain’s elite ACB basketball league last year. It all starts again with a Saturday 12 October home game against Obradoiro in the Pabellon Santiago Martin, La Laguna at noon. There was to be no win in the two legged Toyota Trophy against arch rivals Gran Canaria but tough workouts and a chance for the new additions to slot in were as important as the results. In the home leg CB Canarias shaded it 67-65 with new Argentinian Juanpi Gutierrez leading the way on 13 points. It

was neck and neck all the way and just a one point lead with 1 minute and 16 seconds to go but the yellows kept ahead with a late basket from American Levi Rost. The return leg last Sunday saw a more decisive victory for Gran Canaria 96-81. A final quarter blitz put some distance between the sides but there were more positives with the continued pre season form of Blagota Sekulic scoring 17 points and new American Luke Sigma weighing in with 16. There was even a solitary point for 37 year old pivot Diego Fajardo on his debut for his native Tenerife team. The injury jinx struck again with Levi Rost injuring a right leg muscle, that will sideline him for around three weeks.

Rally season has arrived in Tenerife and one of the most hotly anticipated is the Subida A Tamaimo which takes place on Sunday 13 October up above Los Gigantes. This year 86 cars are due to compete the uphill speed test that pits men and engines against some of the tightest and most wicked bends on the island. It all starts on Saturday night (12th Oct) with the cars getting their check over from officials in the pits area on the Avenida Maritimo in Puerto Santiago from 4pm to 7.30pm. This is a great chance to get up close and see the motors as they rev up and tune up ahead of their grueling challenge. Then on Sunday the race takes place from

10 am from the TF 47 to TF 454 on the road above Puerto Santiago. There is always a big scrum down for the best vantage points, it’s free to watch and thousands will take up every wall, tree, garage roof and precarious rocky outcrop. Among the many drivers (and co pilots) to look out for this year are 2011 Spain mountain climb champion Jose Antonio Aznar in his Porsche, Spain rally champion Miguel Fuster, and a debut for Lanzarote’s Yeray Lemes who normally competes on the world circuits, those last two will both be driving a Ferrari 360. Trophies will be presented early evening, depending on crashes and delays, in the Plaza Santiago.

Testing Bodies To Care For Minds

T

his Saturday (12th October) is the Masca Hiking And Kayak Adventure to raise funds and awareness for En Pie mental health charity. This involves a smooth descent down the valley walk followed by kayaking to Los Gigantes marina to arrive around 5pm. I’m having a go, basically to make the others look good and to give people a laugh as I roll down the ravine like a blond pebble and slither slowly over the sea like the useless one you don’t see on the Hawaii Five O credits. Thanks to Silverpoint for sponsoring me, if you are around come and say hello or better still don’t clap, just throw money.

ack Wilshere has attempted to defuse his Twitter row with kevin Pietersen over his view of eligibility for the england team. The Arsenal midfielder was involved in a series of exchanges with england cricket star Pietersen this week.

The row began when Wilshere was asked his view on the prospect of Manchester United’s rising star Adnan Januzaj one day playing for England Pietersen took exception to Wilshere’s comments that only English people should play for England. Pietersen, born in South Africa, tweeted: “@JackWilshere - interested to know how you define foreigner...? Would that include me, Andrew Strauss, (Jonathan) Trott, (Matthew) Prior, Justin Rose, (Chris) Froome, Mo Farah?” Wilshere answered with: “@KP24 With all due respect Mr Pietersen the question was about Football! Cricket, cycling, Athletics is not my field!”

Pietersen responded: “@JackWilshere same difference. It’s about representing your country! IN ANY SPORT!” Wilshere again tried to defuse the row: “@KP24 I agree that’s exactly what i was saying....” He then went on to say: “To be clear, never said ‘born in England’ - I said English people should play for England,” said Wilshere. “Great respect for people like KP (Kevin Pietersen), Mo Farah and Wilf Zaha - they make the country proud. “My view on football - going to a new country when ur an adult, & because u can get a passport u play 4 that national team - I disagree. Just saying my opinion, everyone is entitled to theirs. Can’t wait for Friday night...” Wilshere received the backing of his club manager, Arsene Wenger: “I agree with him. I always said also an Englishman should manage the England team. If we are not clear on that the national teams will become like a club.”
