Us Brits are well known to be animal lovers – and often go to ridiculous lengths to make sure they are well looked after, ok, spoilt might be a better description. With this in mind, I had to cover a brand new idea (??), born in the States, where else, whereby you can judge what sort of personality your dog has, to help you bond with him. It is all done by filling in a questionnaire and playing various games to see how he re-

now that we’re in october, we’re also in Arona’s fiestas del Santísimo Cristo de la Salud, and the municipality will have a public holiday next Monday, 7 October. It is followed the subsequent Monday, 14 October, by a public holiday in Adeje, for the fiestas de Santa Úrsula. Further north, 21 October is a local holiday both in El Tanque for the fiesta del Santísimo Cristo del Calvario, and in Santa Ursula for Día de Santa Úrsula, and the 25th is a fiesta in Buenavista del Norte for the Festividad de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. Apart from the local holidays, Saturday, 12 October, is a national holiday throughout the whole of Spain for the Día de la Hispanidad. The Guardia Civil has arrested two men for a spate of burglaries in the municipalities of Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide. The two, 19-year-old A.L.A.C. and 21–year-old J.A.E.D., were arrested after police received several denuncias concerning thefts of money, jewellery, video consoles, and other small and easily portable objects over the past few months. The pair are said to have police records, and to have been in borstal as adolescents. They are both from Chio, which has been one of the main areas victimised by the thieves. Extremely good news for one family here in Tenerife, as this week saw a plea for information about yet another missing man, bringing the total to 6. The family of 45-year-old Juan Pedro Pérez García reported his disappearance from the Guaza area of Güímar municipality. The Guardia Civil were informed that he has not been seen since 25 September. Police were considering the possibility that there might have been a family argument before he left the house, but his disappearance was still inexplicable. Thankfully he has been found alive and well, though somewhat dehydrated. It appears that he fell some four metres into a cave last Saturday or Sunday and was unable to extricate himself. He was finally heard shouting and was rescued by local police. Good news for one family, but there are still five men still missing. Please contact police if you can help with information about any of the other men who continue to be missing in Tenerife. More information can be found at: www.janetanscombe.com/ news/four-men-now-missing-can-you-help.html latest from los Cristianos beaches. The bidding process for the replacement sunbeds at the old beach has been scrapped - apparently a council employee leaked out pricing details - so it all starts again. The lifeguards are now heading for 14 months without pay, and the 2 expensive looking electronic readout boards installed 3 months ago still show no sign of working.

Happy anniversaries, amazing gardens… and toastgate!!

o

by Marc Craig nE of the many things I love about living out here on this beautiful island is we always seem to be able to find something worth celebrating! Well last week we didn’t have to look too hard as on September 26th it was exactly a year since my wife and I retied the knot we actually got married in Thailand last April but in September over a hundred friends and family joined us out here in Tenerife to celebrate our blessing.

We had planned a reunion but for a multitude of reasons from weddings of their own to babies most of our guests couldn’t make it back over so instead we decided another night in a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz would make our special day memorable. Having booked online weeks ago we set off on Tuesday for our four star hotel just down the road from where we stayed last month for my birthday. As I mentioned in a previous article, if you know where to look online you can pick up some tremendous deals we paid around 60 euros last month for both of us to go all inclusive, this time we opted for bed and breakfast at the unbelievable price of just over 24 euros for the two of us!!! We arrived about an hour too early to check in, so we popped our luggage back in the car and headed to the Jardin Botanico, the Botanical Gardens also known as El Jardin Aclimatacion de la Orotava, that we had spotted on the way in. The gardens were established in 1788 when tropical plants that were being acclimatised there, intended for shipping to mainland Spain, took root. Founded by a signing of a Royal Decree by Charles III, it was a local architect Nicolas Eduardo and a French naturalist Ledru, who designed the Linnaean system and magnificent layout of the gardens.

During the 18th century as travellers explored increasingly more distant and exotic corners of the world, Tenerife was a convenient stopping off point and when they brought with them fascinating examples of alien flora, they often ended up in these gardens. The gardens are 20,000 feet or 7 acres and can take up to 2 hours to explore. The variety of plant life is astounding, palms, cycads, bromeliads, orchids, ferns, figs, banyans, banana and pineapple to name just a few and the gardens are dominated by a huge imposing Ficus tree, which is an incredible sight to see, it’s huge roots that it has flung down from its body, looking like something from a magical fantasy film. One small criticism is there is very little information on these beautiful plants, we wanted to know how old this tree iswas it there before the garden? Unfortunately, all you get is the name and country of origin; however I suspect this is intended to entice you to buy the book guide available from the ticket office for 12 euros. As well as the plant life there is a water garden with lily pads, lotus,

Koi carp and terrapins. It was also wonderfully cool in there, especially in the shade tunnel, which was a relief from the sweltering heat as it was +30 degrees in Puerto that day!! After a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing stroll in this oasis smack in the middle of the city, we left and made our way back to the hotel. Oh the hotel… I’m not going to name and shame, in the interest of keeping the peace, and god knows it was a bargain but it was definitely a case of “you get what you pay for”! Anyway we had a place to sleep and a bath with hot water and there were plenty of sunbeds with soft mattresses around the pool for one night it was passable I wouldn’t want to spend a week though! Which brings me to the following morn-

ing, and what we’ve affectionately named “Toastgate”! We were up bright and early, mainly so we could get out of the room! Down in the dining room, a quick glance at the cooked breakfast counter and my mouth wasn’t exactly salivating with anticipation, but I grabbed what they were passing off as bacon and sausage, an egg and

beans only to discover everything was stone cold, and I don’t mean only slightly warm COLD!! I decided toast may be the safest option, I mean they couldn’t get toast wrong right? The bread selection wasn’t bad so I grabbed a couple of slices and set about locating the conveyor belt toasting machine that most buffet style dining rooms have. After walking up and down I still hadn’t found it then I noticed a queue forming next to the cutlery table....and there it was a two slice economy toaster, the kind of thing Lidl sells for 7.99 Euros!! For the entire hotel!! There were at least 20 people waiting so I decided on non-toasted bread and jam and we spent the rest of breakfast watching people finally making it to the front of the queue only to discover my cooked breakfast was probably warmer than the inside of that toaster, one poor guy who obviously likes his toast almost burnt must have popped the slice up almost a dozen times yet the bread still looked anaemic! The best though was yet to come, my mouth dropped when I saw a young lad of about 18 get to the toaster, I got the impression he didn’t prepare much of his own food at home and that perhaps his mother did everything as we watched in disbelief as he endeavoured to ram a cheese and ham sandwich into the budget toaster!! Of course it got well and truly jammed in there, so of course the only thing to do in this situation is repeatedly ram a metal knife into an electrical appliance, fishing chunks of barely warmed sarnie, tiny piece by tiny piece!! Needless to say the comedy took my mind off the naff breakfast!!

ThE following press release was issued recently by the Irish Embassy contained wise advice for all ex-pats who might be thinking of travelling to their home country for Christmas. however some of the specific information in the following release does apply to the Irish Embassy and Irish passport holders only.

Please take a moment to check the expiry date on your passport. You should always apply for your new passport at least three months before your current passport expires. People often realise at the last minute that their passport has expired and at peak periods, such as December or in the lead-up to the summer holidays, it can be very difficult for us to turn the application around in time for you to travel. Passports can take up to 10 weeks to process from the date a correctly completed application form with the required supporting documentation is received here at the Passport Section in the Embassy. This means that if you need a new passport for Christmas travel you should apply without delay. Don’t forget, should you need to travel while your passport application is being processed, you can still do so if your current passport remains valid. We can return your current passport to you if you provide a prepaid self-addressed envelope, or you can go to your nearest Honorary Consulate or to the Embassy

to get a copy stamped instead of sending us the original Unfortunately, approximately half of all passport applications we receive at the Embassy contain errors, some so fundamental that the applicant has to apply afresh. This can be very frustrating for the applicant

• Make sure your signature fits inside the box in Section 8! • Take your time on section 8 and 9: if you make a mistake here, the entire application is void. • Take care with your photos. Follow carefully the photo guidelines provided with the form.

and contributes to longer processing times for everyone. Common mistakes in filling in the form: read this and avoid them! • Have you included the expiry date of your credit card? • Has the credit card holder signed?

Don’t forget that the witness must write the form number on the back of your photos. • If your previous passport was lost or stolen, the witness in Section 6 must be the same as in section 9. • Finally, if you need to contact us, the best way is by email, madrid. passport@dfa.ie The best way to contact the Embassy passport division is via their dedicated passports email address, Madrid.Passport@dfa.ie. If you wish to check on the status of your application, please use the online tracking system rather than email them directly, using the 11 digit tracking number that will have been on your application form. The Embassy passport phone line is open from 09.30 – 13.00hrs, Monday to Friday on 91 436 4093. They have also introduced a handy way to avoid the hassle of a late application with an automatic passport reminder service, http://www.dfa.ie/ home/index.aspx?id=81861 If you need an application form you can collect one at your nearest Honorary Consulate during their morning opening hours (their details are on our website – www. irlanda.es), or you can send an email to Madrid.passport@dfa.iewith your name, your full postal address and the number of forms you need.

50 Years of Tourism in South Tenerife http://redqueenmusings.wordpress.com

In 1960 tourism was unknown in the south of the island, the major contributors to the economy were bananas and tomatoes and once harvested, the tomatoes were taken to El Medano where they would be sorted, graded and packed into crates before being taken to the docks at Santa Cruz to be shipped around the world. Don Francisco Garcia Feo,

Schoolbag Donation

The Adeje council recently donated backpacks to 80 local school children in infants, primary and secondary school. Inside the bags were school materials for the start of the academic year.

englishtimeadeje.com

The presentation was made by the social welfare councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo and education councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos with members of the Red Cross who worked with other bodies to raise funds for the students in need. The councillors said this was “an important aid for families who need it most… we have made a commitment to offer equality of opportunities, including our young boys and girls who now have the school materials they need to begin their courses”. Education, the councillors said, continued

T

his month, it will be 50 years since tourism was pioneered as the future for the south of Tenerife. I suspect like me, many think this would have been the development of the then fishing village of Los Cristianos, but it seems I was wrong and tourism actually started in one of my favourite towns – El Medano.

known locally as Don Frasco, owned the El Medano tomato packing plant, but he had the foresight to recognise that tourism was fast becoming a boom industry in Puerto de la Cruz in the north. He was aware that the south, with its warmer and sunnier climate, had the potential of become a magnet for tourists so he took the decision to extend and transform his packing plant into a hotel. In 1963 while Puerto de la

Cruz was building block after block of high-rise hotels and apartments, it was in El Medano that Don Frasco built one of the major landmarks of the south, the Medano Hotel. At the time when the hotel opened, there was no Playa de Las Americas or Los Gigantes, even Ten Bel was only a pipedream not to be constructed until the late 1960s. Anyone who has ever been to El Medano will no doubt have seen the iconic Hotel Medano – it is not only the first hotel to be built in the south but also the only hotel located ‘on the beach’. Its large sundeck overhangs the sea and is an ideal place to relax while sipping a cool drink and listening to the waves beneath. For the slightly more energetic, should they decide to go swimming, there is direct access from the deck via a small staircase to the water below. I say deck because to those viewing the hotel it looks as if the extension into

7

the water is the bow of an ocean liner and the sunbathers are about to sail the high seas on the imaginary ship. So what about the Medano Hotel today? After fifty years, the hotel has gone through several owners and refurbishments although it has always retained its beautiful original deco facade. I have been several times and all the public areas I have seen, hallways, restaurant, lounge even furniture are predominantly white and whichever direction you look the sea views are magnificent.

to be a vital tool in helping young people overcome difficulties and iron out differences in their daily lives now and in the future. “No young person in Adeje will be without the basic learning and study tools”, they promised. The students in receipt of the kits have been chosen by the social welfare and education departments based on applications made by families in the borough. Inside the backpack are materials adapted to each of the school levels.

Although the hotel represents a symbol of tourism in the area it has also been under threat from the Spanish Coastal Department who allege that the iconic deck should be demolished as it breaches Spanish planning laws. However Granadilla town council petitioned the island government in a bid to award the hotel Bien de Interes Cultural (BIC) status – similar to a listed building in the UK, saying that the hotel is seen as a Monument of Cultural Interest. I don’t know if this has been granted, I don’t know

if the threat has gone away, as I have heard nothing for several years but I hope so as I just love this hotel. It doesn’t have to be big to have style and grace and like those other hotels built in the 60s this one does not look dated, she carries her age well. Soon after the Medano Hotel was established, the next hotel to be built was the Gran Tinerfe in Playa de las Americas and so the start of tourism as we know it had begun and today the south of Tenerife has become the most popular area on the island.

Some Q and A’s: 1. What is it? A partnership in a stable union of two people, together for a minimum of twelve months without interruption. Registered partnerships allow 2 people who live together as a couple to register their relationship with the relevant public authority in their country of residence. 2. Where would I find the Laws on this? Domestic partners are regulated in the Autonomous Community of Canary Islands by Law 5/2003, for the regulation of partnership (as amended by Law

4/2012, measures administrative and fiscal) and implementing regulations adopted by Canary Islands Government Decree 60/2004. 3. What do you need to qualify? You need to be of legal age, 18. If you are under age (16 or 17) you can be partners but only when you are emancipated/in agreement with the Law. The members of the couple cannot be married to each other or be married or form a union with a third party. It should be noted that a simple separation does not extinguish “double marriages” so that in case of previous marriage must demonstrate they are divorced, widowhood or marriage should be annulled. Neither partner can form families together in a straight line by blood or adoption, i.e. ascending and descending between (grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, etc.) or collateral relatives by consanguineous or adoption within the third degree (siblings and cousins). 4. Does the Canary Law include homosexual unmarried couples? Yes, with the same requirements, duties and

rights. 5. Where do I need to live? The Act requires that both partners are registered in a municipality in the Canary Islands and must demonstrate that they live together for at least one year. 6. How I can prove cohabitation? Normally coexistence is shown by a municipal certificate of coexistence where coexistence time is noted. It can also be established through the registration certificates if both are contained in the same household. And is admissible with any other means of proof of coexistence properly. 7. Is it possible to establish some kind of precondition for establishing a domestic partnership? Any condition that is established in partnership or to remain as such, for example, a payment, is null and void and has no legal effect. 8. Once it is established a domestic partnership, when is legally binding? Once it is established by registration in the Register of Couples, it is effective from the date of enrolment, from the three months following the procedure. In the

event that it is established in writing it is effective from the date of it being notarised. If it is established by any other evidence, it will be effect from the date on which it is established that coexistence was proven in partnership. 9. Is it possible to set an agreement relating to coexistence? Yes partners can actually set an agreement regulating their personal property if they are not contrary to the law and may establish their mutual rights and obligations as well as financial compensation in case of termination of cohabitation and separating from their partner. 10. What happens if you set no regulatory agreements of coexistence? The law understands that failure to establish regulatory agreements of coexistence, then both partners contribute to the maintenance of common home and common expenses with their own income,

and if these are not sufficient, it is understood that the contribution made by each member shall be pro- proportional to their income and their assets. 11. Does it have a validity? Municipal records for unmarried couples have only census purposes, for knowledge of existing domestic partners in a municipality and to exercise the powers of the City Council. However, the legal validity of the Act gives the registration of a domestic partnership is only possible through The Registry. 12. Registered partnerships - In several EU countries, you can make your partnership official without getting married, in the form of a registered partnership (sometimes called a civil partnership). 13. Differences between EU countries in this field are huge, in terms of not only the possibilities they offer, but also the extent to which

partnerships contracted abroad are recognised (if at all). 14. Registered partnerships are considered equivalent or comparable to marriage in some – but not all – EU countries. EU countries which do not recognise registered partnerships: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Romania, Slovakia. Where they are considered equivalent, they give you the same rights for immigration purposes: your registered partner will be entitled to come with you if you settle in these countries. If any of your documents are not issued in the UK or Spain, you may need to make further enquiries. Documents that are not provided in English or Spanish will have to be legally translated into Spanish. Previously, illegal workers were nervous of reporting an irregularity because they had to give their details, even though the information, although known to the work inspectors, was never communicated to the employer. These types of interventions are some of the measures promoted by the Spanish Red Cross to strengthen

the aid appeal launched last year to meet the increased demands for help and the increasing casualization of the socioeconomic status of peo-

ple seeking support because their family network can’t supply them and unemployment benefits and other subsidies have been used up.

Did you know there is a very talented troupe of

cheerleaders based here in South Tenerife?

The Tenerife Tigers were born in the Lets Dance/Vamos a Bailar school in Calleo Salvaje and are already a favourite fixture at many sporting events as well as representing Adeje and Tenerife in national and international events. In fact in May of this year the team from Tenerife did fantastically well in a cheerleading competition in Wales and won a total of seven trophies four 1st places, two 2nd places and a 3rd place. The group is very international with the parents of the children and young adults in the group coming from all over the world, but all live here in Tenerife. And while the teaching language in the classes is English, when they are taking a

break the kids are as likely to talk to each other in Spanish or Russian! Today more and more young Spanish girls are joining and their parents are delighted as their children are coming home with improved conversational English. And if you think cheerleaders are only secondary to a football or basketball team, think again. Cheerdance is very much a sport in its own right today, and these girls, from 7 to 17, (with a cubs group now formed as well) find they are asked to perform at a variety of events, from sporting to charity, and their enthusiasm for the shows is infectious. The Tenerife Tigers are very busy this month as many of them are tak-

ing part in a hugely important competition in Madrid on October 12th and 13th. The Tenerife Tigers were encouraged to travel to the Spanish capital by the organisers and they will be representing Adeje at the very first Spanish Cheerleading and Dance competition. They have been rehearsing around the clock for the event. And for those Tigers who can’t make it to Madrid, they will be performing closer to home, and you can see them do a few stunts while enjoying the Adeje local fiestas. The Tigers have been asked to take part in the big parade that happens along the Calle Grande, or main street, in Adeje on Saturday October 12th, starting at about 8pm.

Live Arico News Puppies Living In a Cave – Can You Help?

Suzanne Vega, the American songwriter and singer perhaps best known from the 1980s and 1990s, will be performing in Tenerife on Friday, 11 October in the Espacio Cultural CajaCanarias in Santa Cruz. For fans, this is a great opportunity, with tickets still available from www.ticktackticket.com and priced at just 11.90 Euros. The golf tournament part of the fiesta has had to be postponed from this coming Saturday. There are apparently three other tournaments taking place that day and it has not been possible to achieve the minimum number of competitors. Costa San Miguel says that it is sad that other golf clubs couldn’t respect the date of their competition, which was in the agenda since the beginning of 2013 and which formed part of the San Blas Retorno fiestas. San Miguel tourism will advise of a new date as soon as possible. We need to find foster homes for eight adorable five week old puppies currently living in a cave above Los Cristianos. Their mother is the size of a poodle and the dad more or less the size of a small retriever. They have been well cared for by the cave dweller, and are fat and healthy, but clearly we will need to remove them for their own safety as they will want to venture out very soon.

We will be sterilising the Mum and returning her to her owner so that no more accidents like this happen in the future. Could you find it in your heart to foster these puppies, or even adopt one? Until we have homes in place for them all we cannot remove them and get their injections done. Should you offer a foster home, ALL food and vetinary care will be met by Live Arico PAWS, they will cost you nothing other than your time and patience. We can even supply a puppy pen. Should you wish to adopt one, the standard adoption fee of 140 Euros for a female and 110 Euros for a male applies which covers all vaccinations, microchip and sterilisation when they are old enough. They are waiting for you.....call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information.

Top Square Does It Again

Last Saturday the 28th September we were back on the Top Square, Golf del Sur for our three monthly fund raising spectacular. We vow that everyone is better than the last and wow, we did not disappoint. A new feature, which proved very popular, was a fashion show of items from our Los Cristianos shop, which were then sold afterwards. Hats off to Kel and the wonderful models, headed by the beautiful Stephanie, from the Blue Luna Café, for thinking of the idea, and putting it all together. 185 Euros of clothes

were sold, with another 110 Euros coming from an auction of designer bags and purses. Entertainment, hosted by Suzy q came from Johnny Cash, Aidy Evans, Vicky Denton, Robbie Dominic, Caroline from the Emerald Lounge on the squeezebox, Alfie on the guitar and Dave Slippers. Bill and Heather provided a lovely toy dog and Becky went round the Square asking people to name him. His name was Rocky, Paul from the Emerald Lounge was the winner and another 120 Euros went into the pot. Siobhan, Claire and Poppy worked hard on the tombola, with prizes galore, and our official photographer Steve Sands captured the moment in top style as always. The photos and videos can be found on our website and Facebook page. There always has to be a silly time, and Dave Slippers, Howard Owen, Sean Wren and George did not disappoint with their own take on the Village People meets the Full Monty. The Square was packed, with standing room only, and a huge 1,005 Euros in total was raised. Enormous thanks to all who worked so hard, came, donated, and supported. We

will see you at the next one on the 28th December, with a seasonal theme being the order of the day. Good times. This Sunday the 6th October sees us back at Horse Riding Adventures, Aldea Blanca, for Katie’s BBQ number 2. Can it possibly be as good as the last one? Probably, because it coincides with a show jumping competition, which starts at 10am. Live Arico PAWS will be hosting a BBQ lunch at 1, and as the day coincides with the birthday of one of Katie’s sponsors, Sally from Tenerife Angels, there will be live entertainment from Sebastian and more. Come and enjoy the day. On Saturday the 19th October we will be having a bit of a posh do. Get your best togs out for our black tie and posh frock fundraiser at Vivo, Playa de las Americas, from 7pm. Be entertained by the world class Bitter and Twisted, whilst you enjoy a two course meal with wine, beer and soft drinks at the table. Later, chill out on the terrace with Marc Craig and maybe some special guests. Tickets priced at just 25 Euros each (12.50 Euros for children), call Sue quickly on 629 388 102 as they are going fast already. We have also organised a bus from the Golf del Sur at just 5

Euros per person return, but obviously places are limited so call quick to ensure your seat. The dress code is of course optional, come as you please, but we thought we needed an excuse to dress up for a change, haha. In any event, don’t miss it; it will be a night to remember.

But only last month did I try the Clean 9 Detox ….you see I have been meaning for ages to get back into shape and just needed a real boost with real results to give me that confidence to continue. At first I didn’t know how I would manage 9 days of detoxing with a busy work and social life but once I made the choice and set a goal I just bit the bullet and was on my way. I ordered the Clean 9 which took only a matter of days to arrive and I also worked closely with Judith from Origins Wellness to work out a balanced fitness programme to compliment the detox. Judith was able to help take my measurements and give me all the physical support I needed. Day 1 was hard but bearable, Day 2 was the most dif-

Forever living File Photo ficult day - I experienced some headaches but I drank a lot of water and slept like a baby - in fact during the 9 days slept really well. I woke on day 3 with an abundance of energy which continued until day 9. After Day 2 my cravings for all sorts of things died down (even a beloved evening glass of wine) and as the days passed it just became my routine. I lost a total of 6lbs and more importantly 23cm which is a huge difference in just 9 days. People noticed, I noticed - my skin looked amazing and I felt so energized and full of life. I have just returned from a holiday, and as with all holidays I over did it – so I am planning to do

another Clean 9 next month and get myself ready for winter and perhaps not feel too guilty about Christmas this year. I would like to thank Julie for all the support she gave me including introducing me to a facebook group of fellow Clean 9 users who also gave me encouragement and great ideas as well as Judith who was fantastic at giving me the correct physical support. If you need a quick boost, struggle with cravings or just want to sleep better and feel better go for it – it’s only 9 days but I promise you won’t regret it!!! Take the challenge!!!! www.tenerife-weekly.com Spain has emerged as the Number 1 destination for people seeking expert advice about buying a home in the sun.

Two thirds of prospective purchasers who sought advice from Foreign Office property experts at the ‘A Place In The Sun’ show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham last weekend said their preferred destination was Spain. Foreign Office advisers from Spain and France, including Alicante Consul Paul Rodwell and British Embassy Madrid property expert Bernadette Gallagher, spoke to a total of 2,209 people who were considering buying a place abroad. Two-thirds (66%) wanted advice about purchasing in Spain, with a quarter (24%) considering France and the rest (10%) looking at other countries or undecided. More than four out of five people said they found the advice very useful and would use it when buying their home. They particularly liked the fact that the advice was impartial and free. Most advice given by the Foreign Office team concentrated on three key areas: • the value of following the Foreign Office property buyers’ checklist before moving abroad (take your time, rent first, access healthcare correctly, consider the impact of

The Oil Business & Smart App For Tourism Don’t Mix Tram Users

newsinthesun.com “Oil and Tourism are like oil and water”, so said Paulino Rivero, President of the Canary Islands, during a presentation of awards for Tourism Excellence on the island of El Hierro. Rivero went on, “there is no coexistence possible, the oil business is for others, tourism is the business of the Canaries “.

The area’s authorities have reacted angrily to a Spanish government decision that allows the Repsol Company to look for oil 60km off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, warning that a spill would wreck beaches and drive tourists away. Mainland News In Brief Spain is to freeze civil servants’ wages again in 2014 in an attempt to cut public debt. The wage announcement came hours before the government announced its 2014 budget plans, together with a small improvement to its economic growth and unemployment forecasts.

The number of mortgages granted to prospective home buyers in Spain dropped by 42.7% in July when compared to the same month of 2012, and follows the 42.2% fall in June, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported. The INE reported that the number of mortgages fell to 13,777 purchases in July, the lowest figure since 2003, and decreased by 26.1% percent in the first seven months of the year. July was the 39th consecutive month of decline which meant that home mortgages have been declining for three years and three months. Hundreds of protesters marched in Madrid to call for the abdication of King Juan Carlos, the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic. A large police presence blocked access to the Royal Palace, where the demonstration was due to end in a rally, with metal barriers and police vans. Protesters marched under banners reading ‘‘Checkmate to the King’’ and chanting ‘‘Tomorrow, Spain will be a republic.’’ A heavy downpour caused many protesters to peel off from Saturday’s march before it reached a newly convened gathering point near the palace. Spain’s interior minister says a correspondent from the Spanish newspaper El Periodico has been kidnapped in Syria by an organization linked to al-Qaida. Jorge Fernandez Diaz said his ministry was working for the release of 46-year-old Marc Marginedas, who has not been seen since September 4th when the car he and his driver were in was stopped by armed jihadists near the western town of Hama. Barcelona-based El Periodico says it has not been able to contact Marginedas. The newspaper says no group had claimed responsibility. Diaz did not say how he knew who had kidnapped Marginedas. El Periodico says Marginedas entered Syria from Turkey on Sept. 1 for what was his third trip since the conflict erupted in 2011. A US court has ordered Odyssey Marine Exploration to pay Spain $1.1 million in legal fees stemming from a project code named Black Swan. The case began in 2007 when Odyssey recovered about $500 million in silver and gold coins from a shipwreck off Portugal. Spain contended the coins were its property and that it was recovered from a Spanish frigate that sank in 1804. In 2009, a Tampa federal judge ordered Odyssey to release the property to Spain. For the first time in history, since bike sales started to be tracked, Spaniards bought more bicycles than cars. Last year, 780,000 bicycles were sold in the country compared to 700,000 cars. In 2012 the number of bicycles sold increased by 4% compared to the total of 2011. Last year, car sales in Spain dropped by over 30%, with this trend the awareness related to the economic benefits of cycling is increasing as ‘green’ jobs would come as an opportunity for the country that struggles with an unemployment rate of over 25%.

Spain Considers Turning Back Time

Spain’s equality commission is considering changing its time zone to reverse a World War Two decision that put the country in sync with Nazi Germany. Until the 1940s, Spain was in the same zone as Britain and Portugal, which are on roughly the same latitude.

However, when Nazi-occupied France switched to German time, Spain’s Franco dictatorship followed. Now there are calls for the decision to be reversed - on the grounds that it would help boost Spaniards’ quality of life. Switching to British time might bring Spain some family-friendly British customs, a study by the Commission has suggested. The study said: “The fact that for more than 71 years Spain has not been in its proper time zone means ... we sleep almost an hour less than the World Health Organisation recommends. All this has a negative effect on productivity, absenteeism, stress, accidents and school drop-out rates.” The time change was “a foundation stone” of a series of recommendations aimed at making work and school hours more flexible and work and family life more compatible, said commission president Carmen Quintanilla: “We drag out the morning and extend our lunchtime. We lose time and have to work more hours in the afternoon. Eating later, we have to start work later, which means we get off work later.” Moving clocks back by one hour could have a profound effect on the eating, sleeping and working habits of Spaniards, whose culture is famed for long lunches, siestas and late shifts at work. For example, if it gets dark earlier companies would likely readjust work schedules that see Spaniards working

well into the evening, the commission said. That might move Spain closer to the 9-to-5 working tradition more commonly seen in Britain, encouraging earlier meals and more family time. Although working hours in Spain vary greatly, the typical working day is divided in two, with lunches sometimes lasting up to two hours. Many workers take this opportunity to eat at home, and this allows them to enjoy the famous

Spanish tradition of the siesta. But as a result, many workers do not get off until after 7pm and shops stay open up to 10pm, when bars begin to fill for what are often lengthy nights of socialising. “Our time schedules have serious effects on the daily life of Spaniards,” said Nuria Chinchilla, a business school executive who helped write the study. “We live in permanent jet lag.”

Spain Welcomes Baby White Rhino

Officials have confirmed the birth of a rare white rhinoceros has been born at the Cabarceno Park in Cantabria, Spain. The male white rhinoceros was born at the outdoor safari park on September 19th, weighing 110 pounds and began walking after just 15 minutes.

Vets at the park said the first few weeks of the newborn’s life will be crucial and that he is receiving round-the-clock care. The new baby rhino and his mother, 8-year-old Zola, have been moved to an enclosure, away from the other rhinoceroses at the park. White rhinoceroses are on the verge of becoming extinct because of poachers who kill them for their horns. The horns are used as ornaments and in traditional Chinese medicines. They are also extremely difficult to breed in captivity; staff at the Cabarceno Park had been trying for 16 years to impregnate a female white rhinoceros.

eu inspectors Visit gibraltar

A TEAM of European Union inspectors have been to Gibraltar to investigate the border row causing diplomatic tensions between the UK and Spain. london and british overseas Territory Gibraltar complained to the EU that Spain’s over-zealous checks on border traffic were holding up workers and tourists. Spain accuses Gibraltar of not doing enough to combat cigarette smuggling.

Drivers have been subjected to 2 hour delays queuing to cross the border, according to Gibraltar authorities. Six inspectors interviewed people and observed immigration and customs procedures. A group of Spanish workers who have to cross the border to get to work followed the inspectors, waving signs protesting about the border queues. A spokesman for the group the ASCTEG said it would have been “sensible” not to announce the inspection and let the inspectors “see what the queue is really like” instead. Gibraltar’s chief minister Fabian Picardo spoke prior to the inspection saying he

hoped the inspectors’ visit would offer a solution to the situation at the border.

He added he planned to provide the team with any requested documents and al-

low them access to all areas needed for their work, and insisted Gibraltar had “noth-

he was convinced the team would find out the scale of tobacco smuggling taking place in Gibraltar. He said Spain would assist the team however they could, but warned that tighter border controls would continue until the Gibraltar authorities helped to end tobacco smuggling. The row broke out in July when Spanish authorities increased checks at the Gibraltar border, saying they were necessary to tackle tobacco smuggling. Gibraltar said the strict checks only came after it dropped 74 concrete blocks into the sea next to its territory, intended to create an artificial reef and encourage sea life to flourish. Spain said the blocks would disrupt waters used by its fishing boats, but denied that the development had prompted its increased border checks. Britain says the border checks break EU free movement rules, and last month UK Prime Minister David Cameron told the EU Commission he had “serious concerns” that Spain’s actions were “politically motivated”. The visiting team of inspectors comes from the customs union, justice services and anti-fraud office of the European Commission, which is the EU executive arm.

Hugh Jackman Panrico Workers – Lifetime Achievement Award Strike Over Cuts

Australian actor Hugh Jackman, star of “Wolverine” and “X-Men,” received a lifetime achievement award at the San Sebastian film festival in northern Spain.

“I will take this as a charge to go on working for many more years to move you and entertain you,” he said after collecting the festival’s Donostia award for his film career from Mexican actor Diego Luna at a ceremony held at a beachside congress centre in the city of San Sebastian. “I have to say how humbly grateful and how surprised I am to receive this award. It means a lot to me for many reasons. It is a rare thing as an actor to take a moment and look back at sometime, you always tend to think ahead to the future,” the 44-year-old actor added at a press conference. The Donostia Award — the Basque name for the coastal city San Sebastian — has been given out each year at the festival since 1986 to “a great film personality in recognition for their work and career.” Past recipients include Gregory Peck, Bette Davis, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Richard Gere and Robert De Niro. Jackman toured San Sebastian by bicycle for several hours before picking up his award. Wearing jeans and a black blazer, he smiled and posed with fans after his film “Prisoners” was screened out of competition at the festival, the oldest and most prestigious event of its kind in the Spanish speaking world. Directed by Canada’s Denis Villeneuve, the nearly two-and-a-half-hour long film tells the story of a distraught father, played by Jackman, who holds captive and tortures the troubled young man he

Their bodies were exhumed from mass graves scattered around Spain. The monument and mausoleum are due to be completed in a few weeks, but it will take years before the remains of each body to be placed there are identified and, in some cases at least, handed over to the families. Jackman, the father of two children with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, said he researched the part by learning about kidnapping experiences and drawing on his own experiences as a parent: “It is the most difficult research I’ve ever done,” he said. “I knew a film like this would take an unconventional director like Denis,” added Jackman, who will play Wolverine for the seventh time in next year’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” “Prisoners” is the first Hollywood effort by Villeneuve, who was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film for his 2010 film “Incendies.” “Cinema for me is a tool to explore deep fears,” Villeneuve told reporters after “Prisoners” was screened. The 45-year-old director’s erotic thriller “Enemy” is one of the 13 films in the race for the Golden Shell award for best film at the 61st San Sebastian film festi-

It hosted the world premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s spy thriller “North by Northwest” in 1959 and Woody Allen’s “Melinda and Melinda” in 2004.

Panrico are famous across Spain for both their range of donuts, breads and savouries. They had announced earlier this month that they would be unable to pay some 4,000 workers, in order to secure enough money to maintain their operations. Panrico has not outlined how the cuts announced will affect

the different factories across the country, leading to an atmosphere among employees described as “angry”. The majority of workers under threat are said to be aged between 35 and 52 years old and currently earn, on average, about 1,200 euro per month before the pending pay cut.

Monument To Thousands Nears Completion

October 2009, 2,840 bodies were recovered, in one of the largest exhumations carried out in Western Europe. The rest of the bodies may have been moved at some point to the Valley of the Fallen in Madrid – a monument that the Franquistas built in the 1940s and 1950s, said Francisco Espinosa, with the Málaga Association against Silence and Oblivion – Historical Memory, which represents more than 400 relatives of victims. The University of Málaga took DNA samples from bodies to compare to the

DNA from over 1,000 relatives of the people killed; the remains now lie in boxes, waiting to be put in the new mausoleum. The names of the 4,471 victims have been identified. But it will take years to match the specific remains in the boxes to names; none of the 2,840 bodies recovered had been specifically identified so far. Over the space of four decades, between 88,000 and 130,000 people were killed and buried in common graves across Spain, and some 30,000 babies were stolen and sold in illegal

adoptions, according to human rights groups. No attempt at investigating the mass graves around the country has been successful, because the courts invoke the 1977 amnesty law that blocks investigation or prosecution of Francoera human rights crimes. Moreover, the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy closed down the office that was coordinating the exhumations around the country and the funds collecting money to help pay for the costly DNA tests.

International Parents held Filming In Spain As Daughters On The Up Body Found D espite the economic crisis, the number of international film shoots is growing in Spain. International players are taking advantage of the complex tax breaks regime for local film producers based in Spain, which started in 2009, and Spanish companies are pushing their attractions.

Spanish detectives have searched the homes of a lawyer and her ex-husband as they investigate the suspected killing of their adopted Chinese-born, 12-yearold daughter Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto. Police have detained Rosario Porto, 44, and journalist Alfonso Basterra, 49, on suspicion of homicide after their daughter’s body was found in woodland near the northwestern city of Santiago de Compostela.

According to Spanish media reports, the body was found by a couple heading to a nightclub discovered the body hours after she had been reported missing by her parents.

Day 13 filming of “In The Heart of The Sea” at the UK studio’s Current high-profile international shoots in Spain include Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s “In The Heart of The Sea,” directed by Ron Howard, plus Ridley Scott’s “Exodus,” produced by 20th Century Fox. Spanish film industry offers an 18% taxbreak on film investment by private financial investors channelled through tax vehicles called Agrupaciones de Interes Economico. “The growth of international shoots over the last two years is due to a bigger legal and fiscal security in the use of fiscal incentives,” said producer Adrian Guerra. Guerra, co-

producer of Sean Penn’s action thriller “The Gunman,” filmed in Barcelona, has created Oceano Media to lure international producers. “International producers not only look to Spain for excellent locations. Spanish shoots’s hallmarks are legal security and talented crews,” said Carlos Rosado, of the Spanish Film Commission. Shooting from September in Almeria and the Canary Islands, Ridley Scott’s “Exodus” will generate around 40 million Euros, Rosado estimated. Spanish thespian Maria Valverde (“The Mule”) has just joined the “Exodus” cast,

The parents were shown on national television being led in handcuffs to their respective homes in the centre of Santiago de Compostela for the police searches. Small crowds of onlookers hurled insults at the suspects as they entered their apartment buildings; the case has dominated newspaper headlines and television talk shows.

The mother, a Spanish citizen, acted as French honorary consul in the northwestern region of Galicia from 1996-2006 Detectives are said to be investigating the possibility that the girl stood to inherit money from Rosario Porto’s parents, who died recently, a police spokesman said without giving further details.

Man Admits to Killing Brother

A man has admitted killing his younger brother with a hammer, cutting up the body and putting the remains in a freezer. The 39-year-old Spanish suspect said he carried out the gruesome attack after living in the same home as his sibling for a year, police have said. He was detained after he voluntarily turned up at a police station to confess, according to a police statement. Officers said they went with him to the home where they found “two freezers with bone and organic remains as well as part of

the body”. Police said the man, whose name was not released but is from Palma in Majorca on the Balearic Islands, could not recall how many days ago the crime took place. The suspect apparently told police his 32-year-old brother had moved in with him about a year ago, leading to heated arguments. “In one of those arguments in the home, the brother took a hammer and tried to assault the detainee, who snatched the weapon and aimed several mortal blows at the (victim’s) head,” police said.

which includes Christian Bale, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver and John Turturro. “Exodus” also benefits from the large international experience of Spanish production companies such as Madrid-based Kanzaman, whose partners are working via Babieca Films, Rosado said. “Exodus” and “In The Heart of The Sea” are considered Spanish co-productions since they are partially financed by Spanish tax vehicles. They are also taking advantage of the singular tax regime in the Canary Islands, which

increases its tax breaks to 38%, and boasts further fiscal deductions for film investment from Island-based companies. “There is a long road ahead, but at least we can start to compete with other countries,” Adrian Guerra added. However, unlike other European territories such as France or the UK, Spain doesn’t offer shoot rebates on international productions. “Spain is a reality that needs to be encouraged by Spain’s Ministry of Finance,” Rosado said.

The satellite is being introduced to substitute the old Astra 2D satellite that has declined in performance after years of use. “We will all have to wait and see what will disappear from our TV screens and when,” explained Mike Crompton of IPTV internet alternative MediaStreamz. “The BBC has already made an announcement that it will be using the more powerful UK spot beams which means we are very likely to be losing their programmes here…but nothing has been heard yet from the commercial broadcasters.” Although launched in late 2000, the performance of Astra 2D declined so quickly that a quick fix was required and all channels were transferred to Astra 1N, a satellite intended for the use of German and Spanish channels. However this is now about to change when 1N will be moved back to its original slot and all British channels will be moved to the new ‘big birds’ called Astra 2E and 2F. Thousands of expats in Andalucia

are concerned about the moves, after Channel 5 and various ITV channels disappeared in December last year. “Are the rest soon to go? I really think so,” adds Crompton. “The signs are we will be losing all of the free to air television services we have been enjoying, which will include BBC radio, and that all of this will happen before Christmas.”

Its exact location in the city has not been disclosed, but art fans who come across the mural can call a phone number stencilled onto the wall next to it for more information about the piece. Banksy’s exhibition, entitled Better Out Than In and is described as an “artist’s residency on the streets of New York”, is being promoted on Twitter using the hashtag #banksyny. The street artist, who first emerged through his paintings in Bristol, has not revealed where he plans to unveil the show’s next piece. Earlier this year, a Banksy mural

which disappeared from the side of a Poundland store in north London was pulled from an auction in Miami amid questions about the ownership of the work and how the auction house obtained it. The painting eventually sold at a private auction in London for £680,000.

Farrow Admits Son Could “Possibly” Be Sinatra’s

Actress Mia Farrow has admitted that her biological son with Woody Allen could “possibly” have been fathered by her former husband Frank Sinatra.

Vanity Fair magazine spoke to the Rosemary’s Baby star and eight of her 14 adopted and biological children for its November issue. During the interview Farrow said Sinatra had been the great love of her life and added: “We never really split up.” She added that a DNA test had never been carried

Bridget Jones – Widow Shock

Extracts from the latest in the Bridget Jones Diary saga have revealed Mark Darcy is dead and the world’s most famous singleton is now a widow. The first Bridget Jones book in 14 years, called Mad About The Boy, reveals Bridget married Darcy, only for author Helen Fielding to kill him off.

The third novel in the series continues Bridget’s comic tales of romantic and profes-

sional adventures. After hearing from her last in 1999 with Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason, readers will now find Bridget as a 51-year-old widow obsessed with her wrinkles. Extracts published in The Sunday Times Magazine see her meeting her new 30-year-old toy boy boyfriend Roxter on Twitter, five years after Darcy’s death. But how the love of Bridget’s life died - which appears in a flashback deep into the book - will not be revealed before the book is published on October 10.

tweeted: “Listen, we’re all *possibly* Frank Sinatra’s son.” Bridget Jones fans are already expressing their upset at the death of Darcy, who was played by Colin Firth in the films, with some angry readers vowing to boycott the book. Fiona Ufton wrote on Twitter: “Noooo! Not Mark Darcy!” And Laura Nicholson said: “Mr Darcy is dead ... How traumatic for Bridget Jones fans.” Naomi Sharples wrote: “Not sure that I want to read the 3rd Bridget Jones book now!” And Kirstie wrote: “omgggg just heard to storyline to the new bridget jones book and am heartbroken.” Previous extracts have revealed that Bridget also laments the nightmare of drunken texting, skinny jeans and the fact she has no Twitter followers in the latest book. Bridget Jones’s Diary and The Edge Of Reason were both global successes, selling more than 15 million copies, and were adapted into blockbuster films with Renee Zellweger in the lead role. Portrayed as a stereotypical 1990s London thirtysomething worried about her weight, smoking and alcohol intake, Bridget struck a chord with women of her generation. The modern-day heroine’s story - loosely based on Jane Austen’s Pride And Prejudice - was centred on her love interests Darcy and her cad boss Daniel Cleaver, who was played by Hugh Grant in the films. British author Fielding, who has always denied the books are autobiographical, is herself a 55-year-old single mother-of-two who ended her relationship with television executive Kevin Curran in 2009.

Vanity Fair’s correspondent also spoke to Nancy Sinatra Jr. about Ronan and

she reportedly replied in an email: “He is a big part of us, and we are blessed to have

23

him in our lives.” A representative for Allen told the Associated Press: “The article is so fictitious and extravagantly absurd that he is not going to comment.” Farrow was married to Sinatra from 1966 to 1968 but their relationship continued afterwards, including during the early years of her relationship with the awardwinning director, which began in 1980. Ronan was five when his parents split in 1991 following Allen’s much-publicised affair with 19-year-old SoonYi Previn, Farrow’s adopted daughter from her marriage to Andre Previn. Allen, now 77, and SoonYi married in 1997 and have two adopted teenage daughters. Farrow has largely given up acting and now concentrates on human rights campaigning and her role as a Unicef ambassador. Frank Sinatra died aged 82 in 1998.

Consummate Author Tom Clancy Dies At 66 Best-selling US author Tom Clancy, author of hi-tech, Cold War thrillers including The Hunt For Red October and Patriot Games, has died aged 66. Clancy, who died in Baltimore, Maryland, was described as a “master of his craft”, a “consummate author” and “one of the most visionary storytellers of our time”.

Clancy wrote a series of military and spy thrillers including blockbuster 1984 debut The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear And Present Danger and The Sum Of All Fears, which were all made into successful Hollywood films. He has been called the most widely read and influential military novelist of his time, and several of his books featured hero character Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst. Harrison Ford played Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger while Alec Baldwin was in the role for The Hunt For Red October, alongside Sir Sean Connery as the captain of a Soviet submarine. Ben Affleck played Ryan in The Sum Of All Fears, and a fifth film featuring Ryan called Shadow One is due for release later this year. Clancy, who reportedly died in hospital, was born in Baltimore on April 12, 1947. He went to Loyola College to study physics before switching to English, admitting later he was not clever enough for the rigours of science. After graduating in 1969, he married wife Wanda and joined her family’s insurance business, while also noting ideas for a novel. In 1979, Clancy began Patriot Games, in which he invented Jack Ryan. In 1982, he put it aside and started working on The Hunt For Red October, based on a real incident in November 1979, in which a Soviet missile frigate called the Storozhevoy attempted to defect. In real life, the ship did not make it, but in Clancy’s book the defection was a success. By a stroke of luck, US President Ronald Reagan got Red October as a Christmas gift and quipped at a dinner that he was losing sleep because he could not put the book down. Clan-

cy later said those remarks helped put him on the New York Times best-seller list. The writer had said his dream had been simply to publish a book, hopefully a good one, so that he would be in the Library of Congress catalogue. He had sold the Hunt for Red October manuscript to the first publisher he tried, the Naval Institute Press, which had never bought original fiction. The novel led to a string of hits, both on the page and in Hollywood blockbusters, including the 1987 book Patriot Games, made into a film five years later.

Anastacia Recovering From Double Mastectomy Singer Anastacia has revealed she had a double mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time earlier this year.

Jackson Family Loses Damages Fight

Michael Jackson’s family lost their fight for huge damages after a court dismissed claims that concert promoter AEG Live was negligent over his death. The lawsuit was brought by the 50-year-old singer’s mother, Katherine, 83.

Lawyers had been asking for huge pay outs of $85m (£52m) for each of the star’s three children, and an unspecified amount for economic losses, estimated at up to $1.6bn (£986m). After a trial which lasted for five months, followed by three days of deliberations, a jury in Los Angeles determined that AEG Live was responsible for hiring Dr Conrad Murray before the singer’s planned comeback concerts but that the firm was not to blame for his wrongdoing. The disgraced doctor was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter for giving Jackson an overdose of the surgical anaesthetic propofol in 2009. Defence attorney Marvin Putnam said: “The jury’s decision completely vindicates AEG Live, confirming what we have known from the start - that although Michael Jackson’s death was a terrible tragedy ... not a tragedy of AEG Live’s making.”

A spokeswoman for the Jackson family said after the verdict: “As of right now, they don’t want to speak about it.” The family had claimed AEG Live negligently hired Murray as Jackson’s personal physician and ignored signs the Thriller singer was in poor health before he died. Jackson had been due to start a series of 50 comeback concerts in London. Witnesses said he saw the This Is It concerts as a chance for personal redemption after being acquitted of child molestation. But as the opening date drew closer, he is said to have had bouts of insecurity and had been unable to sleep.

The trial heard testimony from Jackson’s son Prince, his ex-wife Debbie Rowe and mother Katherine, as well as details of his struggles to perform, his use of prescription drugs and his relationship with his children. Testimony at the civil trial showed only Jackson and Murray knew he was taking propofol. In his closing argument, Mr Putnam told jurors the company would have pulled the plug on the shows if they knew he was using the anaesthetic: “AEG would never have agreed to finance this tour if they knew Mr Jackson was playing Russian roulette in his bedroom every night,” he said.

The US star cancelled her planned European tour in February, which was due to start in London on April 6. The 45-year-old, who was a guest judge on The X Factor last year, updated her fans as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She said in a statement: “In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month I wanted to take the opportunity to support a cause particularly close to my heart. I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the second time earlier this year and am currently in the final stages of recovery after undergoing a double mastectomy.” She added: “It has been an intense journey but I am feeling great and ready to start the next chapter. Breast Cancer Awareness Month gives all who are facing this disease a chance to gain strength and sup-

25

port from each other. Early detection has saved my life twice. I will continue to battle and lend my voice in any way I can.” The I’m Outta Love singer said she underwent a double mastectomy with Latissimus Dorsi flap surgical procedure, which involves using muscle and skin from the upper back to reconstruct the breasts. She was first diagnosed with the disease in 2003 but made a full recovery following radiotherapy and surgery, before her second diagnosis this year. Angelina Jolie also revealed earlier this year that she had undergone a preventative double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer. And X Factor judge Sharon Osbourne confirmed in November that she had undergone a double mastectomy. She beat colon cancer a decade ago but opted for surgery after finding she carried a gene which increased the risk of developing breast cancer. Former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton also had a double mastectomy late last year after she was diagnosed with a mutated BRCA2 gene, which meant she had an 80% chance of developing breast cancer and a 30% chance of ovarian cancer.

Double The Price For Lotto Tickets

Lotto tickets have now gone up to £2 - the first cost increase in nearly 20 years. National Lottery operator Camelot says the price rise affects tickets bought for Saturday’s draw onwards, and will make some of the prizes bigger.

The new system sees the pay-out for the average Saturday jackpot increasing from about £4.1m to £5m. Those matching three numbers will now get a £25 payout, instead of £10. And the amount paid for four numbers rises from £60 to £100. However, some prize payouts are being reduced, with the reward for matching five numbers dropping by £500 to £1,000. The prize has halved for five numbers and the bonus ball to £50,000. Unique numbers printed on lottery players’ tickets will be entered for a raffle with 50 prizes of £20,000. Camelot is holding two £10m jackpot draws to celebrate the launch of the new game on October 5 and 12. The special draws will also see 1,000 raffle ticket-holders winning £20,000 on each occasion. The increase in ticket price, which was announced earlier this year, is the first since the National Lottery was introduced in 1994.

A hAUnTInG photograph showing victims of the Titanic disaster being buried at sea has been made public. It shows bodies piled in bags ready to be tipped overboard as the ship’s priest reverend hind conducts a service.

The picture was taken days after more than 1,500 people died when the “unsinkable” liner hit an iceberg and went down in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912. It is to be sold at auction and is expected to fetch up to £5,000. In the photo, two men can be seen dropping a victim over the side of the recovery ship, the CS Mackay Bennett. A canvas bag containing the possessions of body number 177 - William Peter Mayo can be clearly seen. Records show 166 out of 306 bodies collected by the ship were buried at sea, but no images have been seen until now. The photo was discovered when the family of RD “Westy” Legate, an officer on the Mackay Bennett, took a collection of his possessions to an auctioneer. Andrew Aldridge, of Henry Aldridge & Son in Devizes, Wiltshire, where the photo-

graph will go under the hammer next month, said it gave a “unique insight” into the final chapter of the Titanic. “The Titanic has a begin-

ning, middle and end,” he said. “This isn’t one of the most pleasant or glamorous, but it brings a certain level of realism to the story. She

was the ship of dreams but the story ended with bodies being pulled out of the water. “When we were looking through the archive, the pic-

ture jumped from the rafters. It is a chapter very little is known about. It has always been said that the process was dignified and organised,

but piles of bodies are neither of those. The bodies are piled up waist high. This picture shows the dirty side of the business.”

www.tenerife-weekly.com Huntington Dog Beach, in California was the pawfect host for the canine equivalent of the U.S. Open last weekend, as owners brought their pets for an annual surfing competition.

The Surf City Surf Dog contest, now in its fifth year, started with opening ceremonies and a fashion show and included dog yoga and canine costume and owner look-a-like contests. The highlight of the weekend was, obviously, doggy surfing competitions. The canines competed in four different weight classes in their bid to be top dog. The pups competed against dogs their own size, from small hounds weighing under 20lb to extra-large canines weighing in at more than 60lb. Each pooch was judged on a variety of skills, including the duration of their ride and their confidence on the board. There were even specialty categories where owners could surf with their pets and two dogs could surf together. While some of the four-legged participants needed a bit of encouragement to hit the ocean, quite a few caught a good wave and rode the surf.

Cat Flap At Number 10

N

umber 10 has denied claims made in a new book that Larry the Downing Street cat is disliked by the Cameron family.

Following allegations that the rescue pet was little more than a public relations prop, a “savelarry” hashtag quickly took off on Twitter with users poking fun at the furore. GlobalPolitico wrote: “The radical anti-cat agenda of this government is revealing itself.”

27

Cumbrian Labour councillor John Burns tweeted: “Is there no end to David Cameron’s victimisation of those who cannot speak up for themselves?” Downing Street moved to dismiss suggestions in Matthew d’Ancona’s In It Together that the cat was “unloved”. A spokesman said: “Totally untrue. He is very popular with everyone in the building and we all get on purr-fectly well.” The six-year-old-feline, who was rescued by Battersea Dogs And Cats Home,

joined the staff at Number 10 in 2011 after a rat scuttled across the doorstep of the PM’s residence during a live TV broadcast. Larry’s seemingly complacent approach to his rodent duties led to speculation that his days could be numbered,

but in August last year, Downing Street announced he had finally made his first kill.

How Clever is Your dog? - new W

I

S your dog playing dumb to get its own way? have you ever wondered why your pet runs round in circles, or barks at random things? It could be all down to their personality type.

The Dognition site, based in North Carolina, uses questionnaires and games to help dog owners determine how empathetic their pet is, how clever it is at solving problems, whether it is choosing to ignore you or genuinely doesn’t know what you’re saying. Dogs, like us humans have personality types with character traits and these can be compared to other dogs of the same breed, age and size, as well as other breeds. It can be used by owners to learn more about how their dog thinks, train their pet more effectively or help decide which breed of dog to get next. Pet owners begin by filling out a per-

sonality questionnaire about their dog, including whether it is well-behaved, whether it listens to instructions, how it responds to being left alone or told off and so on. Based on the results of this test, the owners are given a series of sciencebased games, designed to test a dog’s level of empathy, communication, cunning - including whether they are trustworthy and loyal, or wily and devious - memory, and reasoning abilities. Empathy involves reading and responding to the emotions of others, Communication tests how a dog uses information from others to learn about their environment, to test Cunning the games see how dogs use information to avoid being found out when doing something wrong. The Memory game tests how the

dogs use past experiences to influence future choices, and Reasoning looks into how the dog finds a solution to a new problem. Once the owner plays the games, all the results are fed into the database and Dognition creates a detailed Profile Report that

Website Uses Games To Find Out explains how the dog thinks. Each dog is also categorised into one of nine personality types, including Einstein, Expert, Socialite, Stargazer, Charmer, Renaissance, Protodog, Maverick and Ace. For example, the Renaissance Dog is a pet which is ‘good at a little bit of everything’ and Socialites are outgoing pets that are easily excitable. The report also compares the results to other dogs of the same breed, age and sizes, as well as dogs from other breeds, to see whether

the trait is specific to the breed or the individual. This can help determine how a dog needs to be trained. If a dog doesn’t listen but understands the command they might not be cunning, they might instead need a specific method of communication such as eye contact. ‘These are science-based games that should be very fun to play with your dog, for both human and dog alike. And while you’re doing it, you can know that you are participating in actual science that can be used to

help dogs,’ said Dognition founder Dr Brian Hare from Duke University. ‘At the same time, it can reveal how your individual dog is thinking.’ All the results are anonymously stored so scientists can research dog behaviour and cognition and Dr. Hare and his team want to gather the data to analyse why some dogs or breeds communicate more effectively with humans, while others are more sociable. One toolkit for one dog costs $39 (£24), which gives the owner a de-

tailed report. A toolkit plus yearly membership paid in full is $99 (£60) and entitles the owner to the games, detailed report as well as personalised training tips. The most expensive option is $147

(£90) which is the yearly membership, but is paid for on a monthly basis. Dognition also donates a toolkit to charity Canine Companions in the U.S for every toolkit bought. Find out more at the Dognition website: https://www.dognition.com/

WHY DOG SLOBBER CAN BOOST YOUR MOOD

• A study has discovered that getting kisses from a dog can make an owner feel happier. • Linda Handlin from the University of Skövde in Sweden found owners who kissed their dogs the most had higher levels of oxytocin than other owners. • Oxytocin is known as the ‘hug hormone’ because it is released when someone is touched by a person they love, including a partner or a child. • It is also released after eating tasty food. • Oxytocin can reduce stress levels and blood pressure.

PoPE Francis has announced that john Paul II, who died in 2005, and john xxIII, who died in 1963, are to be officially declared saints, they will be jointly blessed at an austere service at the Vatican on April 27 next year.

Pope Francis also declared he would bend Vatican rules requiring saints to have performed two “confirmed” miracles, by allowing Pope John XXIII to be sanctified having performed just one, he reportedly healed an Italian nun of a haemorrhage in 2000. John Paul II was credited with his first miracle six months after he died, when a French nun announced she had been cured of Parkinson’s disease - from which the pontiff also suffered through the power of prayer. His second miracle reportedly saw a woman in Costa Rica healed of a serious brain condition after she prayed for John Paul’s assistance on the day he was beatified in 2011. Beatification is the third of four steps towards sainthood. John Paul II, popular during his 27 years as pope, however he alienated many with his conservative views and was blamed for hushing up paedophile priest scandals. At his

funeral in 2005, crowds of mourners cried “Santo subito!” (sainthood now) prompting the Vatican to speed up the path to sainthood, which normally begins five years after death. John XXIII made his name by presiding over the opening of the historic Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) which overhauled the Church’s rituals and doctrines and reached out to other faiths. Many compare him with Pope Francis for their similar humble attitudes, open manner and sense of humour. Vatican analysts believe the decision to declare them both as a saint at the same time is aimed at unifying the Church, since each pope has his own admirers and critics. Francis is said to be a fan of both. On the anniversary of John Paul’s death this year, he prayed at the tombs of both men - an indication he sees a great personal and spiritual continuity in them.

Worth the wait Jurassic (we hope) World Gets Really good comedies age like fine wine, getting better as the years go by and 3 of my favourites are finally getting long awaited sequels in the near future!!

“Dumb and Dumber To” Ignoring the awful non Carrey and Daniels prequel “Dumb and Dumberer-When Harry met Lloyd”, this long

awaited sequel to the Farrelly Brothers 1994 hit sees Lloyd (Jim Carrey) and Harry (Jeff Daniels) on another road trip, this time to track down Harry’s long-lost daughter! “Zoolander 2” The recently announced supermodel sequel sees Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) and Hansel McDonald (Owen Wilson) as washed up exmodels 10 years on from the 1st movie (2001) and has a

rumoured cameo from Lady Gaga ,hopefully they’ll rediscover that there’s “ more to life than being really, really gorgeous”!! “Anchorman 2 The Legend Continues” One of the funniest and most quotable films of all time the first film (2004) initially under-performed at the box office but strong DVD sales and a cult following means we will finally get to see Ron Burgundy and the Channel 4 news team, return, relocated to New York in a new decade (the ‘80s) and the ground-breaking new frontier of 24 hour cable news channels!! Expect lots of hilariously quotable material,”60% of every time”! With all the original casts, writers and directors returning, it looks like we can expect to be falling about laughing all over again-then again, some may have thought the same about “Blues Brothers 2000” :(

(Human) Star

Of course, the real stars of a Jurassic Park movie will always be the rampaging Dinos but Universal, the studio behind the mega franchise has confirmed the casting of Bryce Dallas Howard, and I’m guessing the actress daughter of director Ron Howard, (currently filming his latest epic in the Canary Islands), won’t be playing a prehistoric lizard!

The fourth instalment in the 20-year-old monster franchise has hit the fast track since the recent announcement that the movie, set for release in 2015, is now titled Jurassic World. No plot details have been confirmed but rumours of a remake/reboot are circulat-

ing, however the new title suggests either a fully functional dino-park complete with thousands of snacks/ tourists roaming around it, or the less likely scenario that has been bandied around the net for years of the creation of dino/human hybrids armed with futuristic weapons designed to rid a North America, infested and rav-

aged by giant lizards after humanity loses control. Concept artwork for this ditched version was released last year, however, a new rumour that Jurassic World may feature genetically altered highly intelligent Velociraptors that act as security for the park, may indicate at least an element of this concept may have survived.

house band Mcfly! Miranda said; “it was a genuine honour to interview Bruce-talking and learning about his career you realise he really is a master of all things light entertainment and I’m sure he will say he has finally met his match in a professional dance partner in me. It was only a matter of time before my natural

rhythm and movement was discovered”. Bruce shows no sign of slowing down-he may still be entertaining us when he’s as old as Yoda....hang on, if you take his catchphrase “nice to see you to see you nice” and imagine it spoken in Yoda’s voice, it sounds exactly like the kind of thing the Jedi Master would say!!

ThE duke and duchess of Cambridge have a new coat of arms, representing them as a married couple. The Conjugal Coat of Arms, approved by the Queen, combines William’s coat of arms and Kate’s shield from the Middleton family coat of arms.

Designed by the College of Arms in London, conjugal arms traditionally show the separate shields of a royal husband and wife, side by side. The left shield on the Cambridge’s’ new conjugal coat of arms is taken from the coat of arms given to Will i a m by his grandmother on his 18th bir thday and shows the various royal emblems of different parts of the United Kingdom: the three lions of England, the lion of Scotland and the harp of Ireland. It is surrounded by a blue garter bearing the motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense” “Shame to those who think evil of it” - which symbolises the Order of the Garter, of which he is a Knight Companion.

Kate’s shield on the right shows her family arms, granted to her father Michael before the royal wedding in March 2011. It is divided vertically with one half blue and the other half red, and includes a gold chevron across the centre with white “cotises” either side. It also in-

cludes three acorns with gold stalks and leaves, representing Kate and her two siblings In the couple’s arms, the Duchess of Cambridge’s shield is surrounded by a wreath of oak, to balance out her husband’s garter - a tradition for royal spouses who are not entitled to surround their arms with an order of chivalry.

Both shields are supported by the royal lion and unicorn, each wearing a three pointed collar, known as a label. The label has a red escallop shell derived from the Spencer coat of arms which has been used by William’s ancestors on his mother’s side for many centuries. The Conjugal Arms will be the couple’s coat of arms forever, although parts o f it could change as and when their own circum-

stances and roles change. They will also keep their own coats of arms to represent themselves as individuals, Kensington Palace said. The Duchess was granted her own coat of arms by the Queen after her marriage to William. It was made by putting her father’s arms next to her husband’s, in what is known as an impaled coat of arms.

tenerife in the record Books

facts about Spain

WhIlST researching and compiling my 100 things you should know list last week, I came upon some interesting facts about Spain so I thought I would share them with you all this week. Whilst reading this list, you will see that Spain isn’t just dependant on tourism!

TEnErIFE is the home of a few world records. Apart from sporting records the island is home to the world’s largest dragon statue which is situated at Siam Park in the south of the island. The park is also home to the largest man-made wave in the world and the largest Tai building outside of Asia.

In 1987, Latin America singer Celia Cruz went to the “Carnival Chicharrero” with Billo’s Caracas Boys. The concert was attended by 250,000 people and was consequently registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest gathering of people in an outdoor plaza to attend a concert. The Guinness World Re-

cord for producing the longest slice of ham was broken in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island. Fran Alonso, a Maestro Cortador (Master Cutter), managed to slice a piece of ham measuring an amazing 30.11 metres in length and weigh-

ing in at 4.5 kilos. Fran comes from Galicia in mainland Spain but is now based in Tenerife. He celebrated his success in Plaza del Charco, the main square in Puerto de la Cruz where he was watched by curious crowds throughout the day. It took him seven hours of careful slicing to get into the Guinness Book and the attempt was sponsored by local restaurants and Puerto de la Cruz Town Hall. It is amazing what people will do to get into the great book. I held the world record for non-stop disco dancing for a number of years, although I was a lot younger then and there is no way on God’s earth that I would be able to dance for 15 and a half days now!

1. The official name of Spain is the Kingdom of Spain. 2. The Iberian Peninsula was one of several refuges during the last ice age, so it was mainly from Spain that northern Europe was repopulated after the ice age ended. There are many plants that survived the Ice Age simply because they were in Spain. 3. Spain is home to a type of tailless monkey, the macaque, which is the only type of wild monkey that lives in Europe. 4. Spain sells over 3 billion corks per year. Spain and Portugal provide most of the world’s cork. Cork trees flourish in the dry Meseta region in Spain. 5. In 1492 King Ferdinand V of Aragon and Queen Isabella paid for Christopher Columbus to explore the west in search of a new route to India. He fortunately landed on one of the islands in the Bahamas by mistake. His mistake made Spain one of the richest nations in the world at the time. 6. In 1588, the king of Spain sent 133 ships (the Armada) to England. Almost half of the ships sank in stormy weather or while fighting the British navy. It was a major defeat for Spain and was the beginning of the end of Spain’s global domination. 7. The oldest known cave painting in Europe is found in the Cave of El Castillo in northern Spain. There researchers have found a faint red dot

that is thought to be over 40,000 years old. The Cave of Altamira near Santander, Spain, is also known as the “Sistine Chapel” of cave painting. The ancient Roman Aqueduct of Segovia in Spain was built in the 1st century A.D. and still supplies water to the city to this day. Muslims founded the first Spanish university at Valencia in 1209. When a child loses a tooth in Spain the tooth fairy doesn’t visit! A small mouse called “Ratoncito Pérez” leaves a gift under the pillow. Penelope Cruz was the first Spanish actor to win an Oscar for best supporting actress for her role in the 2008 romance comedy-drama Vicky Cristina Barcelona. There are no laws against public nudity in Spain! (Get your kit off!) The name “Madrid” is from the Arabic magerit, which means “place of many streams.” Spain has some of the largest gold deposits in Europe.

16. Spain is one of the world biggest producers of granite and marble in the world. 17. While Spain relies on imports for most of its oil and for 50% of its coal, the country has uranium deposits, and in 1999 nuclear power accounted for 29.5% of the country’s electricity. 18. Spain is investing in sustainable forms of energy such as solar and wind and is one of the most advanced countries in Europe in the development of wind farms. 19. The Rio Tinto River in Spain is so polluted by toxic pollution from 5,000 years of mining that it contains little to no life. 20. Spain had one of the fastest growing populations in Europe in the early 1980’s. In 2000, Spain had the lowest average birth rate of any country in the world, with just 1.19 children per woman. It is predicted that around 300,000 immigrants need to enter Spain each year to balance the declining number of young people.

into the mountain half a century ago.

French police praised the young climber’s honesty after he immediately reported the

haul. “This was an honest young man who very quickly realised that they belonged to someone who died on the glacier,” local gendarmerie chief Sylvain Merly said, “he could have kept them but he preferred to give them to the police.” Police said the jewels were found in a tin, about the size of a shoe box, and several were inside small bags labelled ‘Made in India’. French authorities are working with their Indian counterparts to determine the jewels’ rightful owners. If they remain unclaimed, the young climber could inherit the jewellery in accordance with French law. Two Air India planes crashed into Mont Blanc in 1950 and 1966 and climbers are known to frequently find debris and remains from the aircraft. Last year the Indian government claimed a bag of diplomatic mail found near the wreckage of the Boeing 707 Malabar Princess that crashed on the southwest face of the mountain on January 24, 1966. Gendarmerie chief Merly said: “Things come up from the glaciers. They’re always moving.”

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard Yes, Tenerife does have its own wild orchids with the species known to botanist as Orchis canariensis but they are not very common so you are not likely to see one of these flowers. However, many other types grow very well here and can be seen on the island if you visit the gardens they are being grown in.

You can sometimes see potted orchids on sale at garden centres and from stall-holders in street markets. They are fascinating plants to grow. Orchids come in many shapes and forms and some of them have very weird flowers that look like some form of small animal. For example in the UK there is the bee orchid (Ophrys apifera), the flowers of which, as its name suggests, look like bees. I became interested in British orchids when as a boy my parents used to take me to the sand dunes near Kenfig Pool in South Wales. We always found lots of orchids in the marshy and grassy areas. There were the aptly named marsh orchids (Dactylorhiza majalis) and early purple orchids (Orchis mascula). Orchids that grow in the ground usually have a tuber or rhizome which they shoot from year after year. They die down after flowering. Some tropical and subtropical orchids have curious pseudo-bulbs in which they store food and water and which become dormant. The giant orchid (Grammatophyllum speciosum) has pseudo-bulbs that can be over two metres in length and that can weigh over a ton in weight. No wonder it is called the giant orchid! Some types of orchid are very fragrant and have their own special perfume. These plants can combine

The Orchids of Tenerife Giant or Tiger Orchid great floral beauty with the attraction of their fragrance as well. Others are more or less scentless. Some species are epiphytes that have long aerial roots and grow up in trees and on cliffs and others grow normally in the ground. Many orchids are very rare in the wild. The subtropical climate of Tenerife is ideal for many species to be grown though. Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife has two really great orchid collections. First of all there is the Sitio Litre Orchid Gardens which is the main one of these. These gardens are situated in the grounds of an old mansion house that dates back to 1730, and there are hundreds of different types or orchids that have been grown there. It is one of the oldest surviving gardens in the Canary Islands and is 235 years old. The orchids are in a special sheltered section in the gardens and

there are always plenty in flower. You would need to be an orchid expert though to know all about the different species on display there. Otherwise just admire the beauty of these incredible exotic blooms. Besides the orchid collection the Sitio Litre also includes a well-tended croquet lawn, an ornamental fountain, a patio area, and there is a big pond which contains a lot of colourful Koi carp. There are plenty of other flowers, shrubs and trees in the garden and a tiny shop selling postcards and memorabilia. There is also a very splendid dragon tree (Dracaena draco) in these very enjoyable gardens. The Sitio Litre can proudly boast several famous celebrities that spent time there. The botanical artist Marianne North painted some of her paintings in the gardens of the Sitio Litre and the writer Agatha Christie was inspired to write The Mysterious Mr Quin after spending

Orchid with ferns

time there. To find the Sitio Litre Orchid Gardens there are two ways. One is by taking the Camino Sitio Litre and walking uphill from Calle de Valois which is a road near the town centre, or by going downhill in this same walkway in a turning off the Carretera Botanico which leads out of the town centre. It is well worth a visit though there is a small admission charge. Further on up the Carretera Botanico in the La Paz suburb of Puerto de la Cruz is the towns famous Botanic Gardens or El Botánico, as it is known in Spanish. These gardens are well worth spending time in anyway to see all the other plants and trees in this

amazing collection and among its attractions is a very fine selection of orchid species that are in a section very near the entrance, so you can’t miss them. The plants in El Botánico are all labeled which is very handy if you want to know the name of a species you see there. These gardens are only 3 Euros to enter and it is easy to spend a couple of hours in there wandering the pathways and admiring the managed jungle of creepers and palms, flowering shrubs, huge trees and an undergrowth of exotic flowers and foliage. There are lily pools too. It is worth visiting Puerto just to see the orchids and botanical gardens!

Uses for Orchids

Besides being very attractive plants that some people collect and others delight in growing, the orchids often have many other uses. Some species of orchid have edible tubers or tubers that can be ground into flour. Vanilla flavouring comes from the seed-pods of a species of orchid known to botanists as Vanilla planifolia. Vanilla is a flavour that everyone will know because it is often used in ice-cream. The dried leaves of an orchid known as Jumellea fragrans are used to flavour rum in Reunion Island. Some species of orchid have been used in traditional herbal medicine.

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.

He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Tenerife Weekly - 4th October 2013 - 10th October 2013

Aquarius 20 January to 18 February

Tact may be needed to help you resolve a difference of opinion with someone. However, with Mars currently active in your relationship zone, don’t let him or her take advantage of you. It might be time to stand your ground! There is also an element of luck at work, perhaps generated by your own faith and optimism. By being generous toward yourself and others, you may find it all comes back to you in wonderful ways. Don’t let doubts stop you from having an adventure.

Pisces 19 February to 20 March

If a private concern or worry prevents you from enjoying life, it might be best to get things out in the open where they can be resolved. Gradually, the week shifts into gear with the emphasis on going places and doing things. Try not to let financial matters stress you out. If you’re feeling under the weather because of ongoing problems, this is the time to get expert help and feel better for doing so. Romance may brighten your week if you’re open to it!

Big Brother opens its doors

T

hE big brother house has opened its doors to the public as a national Trust property in a move that critics have described as “just wrong”. The 500 tickets for the two-day event, last weekend, were snapped up by Trust members within an hour of going on sale.

Aries 21 March to 19 April

You could be torn between getting your message out to the world and reflecting on your current situation. On balance, you may opt to do more, say more, and explore ideas and options. However, Neptune in Pisces highlights your dreams and fantasies. Something you have often imagined could show signs of coming true. You might feel compelled to follow someone’s lead, but that may only make you more determined to rebel and do your own thing.

Taurus 20 April to 20 May

Partners and significant others may be tetchy and expect a lot of you. Trying to discuss difficult or complex issues could be a problem. It might be better to stick to your own agenda and avoid the complications that a conversation seems to imply. Take care of your health, especially midweek when restlessness or frustration could cause a minor accident. Smooth over any rifts concerning a friend or loved one this week with attention, a compliment, or a small gift.

Gemini 21 May to 21 June

Work affairs can go well, especially if you’re job hunting or you want to request a new assignment. By appealing to the ideals of someone in authority, you may stand an even better chance of getting what you want. On another note, a change in your social routine might not be such a bad thing, especially if it encourages you to move in new circles. However, concerning romance, you may be torn between keeping it light or allowing things to get more intense.

Cancer 22 June to 22 July

Friendly relationships could be difficult to maintain this week - certain people may be cranky. Perhaps you can play the mediator and help bring things to a satisfactory conclusion. While family affairs should proceed nicely, you may find that midweek brings disruptions due to career matters. Perhaps you’ll have to forego a gettogether in order to stay late at work. You might also be tempted to make a big purchase, but right now financial affairs might need sound and capable handling.

Leo 23 July to 22 August

This can be your kind of week - fun and stimulating. However, everyone having a good time will mainly come down to you. You seem to the one sending out invitations or arranging get-togethers. There may also be duties and responsibilities to attend to at home. Don’t set your sights so high that you can’t possibly achieve all you want to do. You may have a thirst for the unusual and be tempted to explore movies or literature that can satisfy this desire.

Virgo 23 August to 22 September

With Saturn showing up in your communication zone, you may find yourself face to face with an as yet unresolved issue. You may be determined to see it through this time. One of the biggest problems may be overcoming your fear. Perhaps you have a mental block you can’t seem to move beyond. This is your chance to redouble your efforts. Fear can be your greatest ally if you’re willing to make it so. You might be tempted to drastically overspend. Have fun but take care.

libra 23 September to 23 October

Don’t count on too much help this week, as someone may be uncooperative. Stressful situations could set you back, so do yourself a favor and try not to get involved. The same applies if there’s a disagreement at home or someone is trying to pull a power trip. Leave things alone as much as you can and focus on doing something positive, such as connecting with a good friend, watching a movie, or generally getting out and about. Advice from someone you trust may help, too!

Scorpio 24 October to 21 November

Try to watch your words this week, because what starts out as a simple statement or opinion could put certain people at odds. Fortunately, harmony can be restored with the right attitude. At the same time, you may be experiencing an influx of invigorating, motivating, and enterprising energy. Making the most of this may help power career plans or encourage you to take steps toward achieving a goal. You might be feeling more determined than ever to show what you can do.

Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December

Although someone could be rather pushy, try not to read too much into what they say or do this week. Instead of wondering about their motives, focus on what’s important to you. In romance, there is a chance that your head and heart may not be working in unison. Be sure about your feelings before you say something you might later regret. On the plus side, you can access deeper levels of insight, imagination, and intuition, all of which can help you make the right choices.

Capricorn 22 december to 19 january

Say yes to an invitation that could arrive like a bolt out of the blue, especially if it’s linked with your career. Something exciting may be in the pipeline, although you might have to move out of your comfort zone in order to take advantage of it. You might also find a change of scene could be just what’s needed to get you out of a rut and give you a new lease on life, especially if you’ve felt stuck lately. Someone special could have some ideas on this score.

“It’s a radical idea but we wanted to look at what a younger, more urban generation of Trust members would be interested in seeing,” said Ivo Dawnay, from the National Trust. “Big Brother is really a part of British heritage now, so the house is an ideal showcase. It’s fascinating. I think people are going to love looking around it.” Those lucky enough to get tickets were able to see the famous diary room, bedroom, kitchen and garden where housemates spend their time. The property is situated off a Tesco roundabout in Borehamwood, north of London, on a TV studio site, a world away from the kind of location you would normally find a National Trust property. “I’m not going to burn my Trust member card or man the barricades, but this is ridiculous,” said former MP Ann Widdecombe, I can see what they are trying to do, they don’t want it to be just about old people traipsing around stately homes. But there were better options than this. It’s just wrong.” Katy Smith, executive producer of the reality show, said the link-up with the National

Trust was a great idea: “It’s a house that everyone knows about and hardly anyone gets to see. It’s part of British culture. I think this initiative is a

fantastic collaboration.” There have been 14 series of UK Big Brother since it began in 2000, and 11 celebrity versions of the show.

Brown Rice Broccoli Chicken Cheese Bake

Ingredients:

Directions:

650g fresh broccoli, chopped into bite size pieces (frozen broccoli works too, just cook it to your liking and then drain it very well) 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, chopped 30g plain flour 250ml chicken stock or vegetable if you prefer 125ml milk 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons black pepper 1/2 -1 tsp. salt (depending on how salty the chicken stock is) 150g cheddar cheese, grated (reserve 50g of cheddar for the topping) 75g Parmesan 500g cooked brown rice (follow the directions on the package, add salt to boiling water for extra flavour) 300g cooked chicken, cubed or shredded

Preheat oven to 170°C. Place broccoli in a microwave safe container with 1/4 inch of water. Cover and microwave for 3-4 minutes on high. Drain the broccoli immediately and rinse with cold water. Set aside to drain completely. Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add chopped onion to the pan and sauté for 3 minutes, then add garlic and continue to sauté another minute. Add the flour to the hot pan and mix with the onion and garlic, continue stirring constantly for 1 minute. Pour the chicken stock and milk into the skillet. Allow the sauce to thicken for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly. Once the sauce starts to thicken, add mustard, black pepper, salt and the cheeses. When the cheeses have melted into the sauce add the broccoli and mix well. Set aside. Grease a casserole dish and layer cooked rice and then the chicken. Pour the broccoli sauce mixture over the top of the chicken.

Many people ask me to reprint some recipes, for example a while back I shared my “grandmas cheese pudding”... Quite a few people have been asking for similar recipes as this has probably become one of the favourites that we printed. Apparently, it is now on a menu in a care home in the UK and it is one of the resident’s favourite meals.

I have been asked to share some casserole ideas, but I have to be honest I am not really a casserole person

and I tend to shy away from them; so as a compromise I am going to share this hearty, healthy economical little beauty with you. I normally make it with brown rice but that is purely by preference, you can substitute it to whatever rice you prefer. For the health conscious of you, use skimmed milk instead of a high fat milk, it works just as well. Just a short note. If you do wish to find any of our previous recipes, for example grandma’s cheese pudding,, have a look on our Facebook page where you can browse previous publications of The Tenerife Weekly, and read them all online. Happy Cooking!

Pugh’s recipe tip: Tip 1:

Top with the reserved 50g of cheddar, cover and bake for 25 minutes at 175°C. Remove cover and bake an additional 5 minutes until the top starts to brown slightly. ***If the dish seems a little dry sprinkle with a little water before baking.

Tip 2:

This is a great make ahead dish. You can refrigerate it up to two days before baking it or freeze it up to a month. Let it completely thaw before following the instructions in Tip 1.

Ford Ka Studio

The Ford Ka Studio makes people happier than the bloke that won the lottery and married a model. Why?

Because its strengths make it one of the finest city cars on the market. These – as with every other trim in the range – include its 1.2-litre 69PS

petrol engine that is bolted to fivespeed manual transmission. The result is 0-62mph in 13.4 seconds which is more than enough for the class. This power plant averages 57.7mpg and returns 64.2mpg on the extra-urban cycle, so it also burns very little fuel. That ensures its emissions are low. And there is more. Driving the Ford Ka Studio is nicer than gazing at a winning lottery ticket. As such the visibility is excellent, the steering is precise, the gearbox is smooth and it corners with confidence. It has a respectable ride too. Furthermore, this run-around comfortably seats four people which is important as lottery winners have lots of “friends”. Wonder why. This entry-level trim also has a class-competitive 224-litre boot so there is plenty of room to store cash. The funky styling and solid build quality further enhance this city car’s appeal. The Ford Ka Studio has a basic specification so there is not much to break and empty our lottery win-

New Gearbox Could Revolutionise Motoring

ner’s bank account. Great in theory, but in reality the wind-down front windows look out of place on a modern vehicle. At least it has: power steering which makes manoeuvring effortless, anti-lock brakes that prevent skidding, numerous air-bags for safety, tinted glass for privacy and an automatic start/stop system. And that is the clever bit. Why? Because it saves fuel by switching-off the engine when the vehicle is stationary. Let us consider an example. The lottery winner is en route to his mansion when he hits

a red light. He stops, places the car into neutral, and takes his foot away from the clutch. The engine then switches-off but secondary systems such as the radio continue to function normally. When the light turns green, the motorist presses the clutch and the engine starts within a moment. Whereas this can be disconcerting initially it should save a meaningful amount of fuel over time. The Ford Ka Studio costs from 9,000 Euros – and that is nothing for a lottery winner that earns a small fortune from interest.

Ford Mondeo celebrates‘20th Anniversary’ The popular Ford Mondeo is celebrating twenty years with more than 4.5 million sold across Europe. Approximately 1,400,000 Mondeo’s have sold in the UK since its launch in 1993. To celebrate the two decades of the Mondeo, Ford has released a new internet video with voiceover by Hollywood actor Ray Winstone, star of such movies as “The Sweeney,” “Snow White and the Huntsman”, “The Departed” and “Great Expectations”.

The Controlled Rotation System Gearbox could revolutionise motoring - and cycling – and shipping - and windmills - and numerous other types of machine. Why?

Because this new transmission – which has been developed by Parts Services Holland – has several advantages over its traditional counterparts. It is, for example, lighter, has very few components, requires no maintenance and operates without lubrication (oil). Let us consider how it works. The Controlled Rotation System Gearbox incorporates two circular discs that are connected by a strong, high-friction, belt. As such, it lacks the traditional sprockets found in most of today’s systems. Remarkably, the diameter of these discs can be increased and decreased via a digitally controlled hydraulic oil pump and slide units. This process effectively creates different gears that enables the vehicle to proceed at a wide rage of speeds. The concept was created for bicycles after its inventors – who live in the Eindhoven region of The Netherlands - saw professional cyclist Andy Schleck lose his chain at a crucial point of the 2010 Tour de France. This prototype then evolved into a system for cars which measures thirty centimetres, by twentytwo, by eighteen. The engineering

company expects its revolutionary gearbox to ‘change the automotive industry on a worldwide scale’. That could happen if it is reliable.

History Of Gearboxes Gearboxes have evolved beyond recognition within living memory. As such, vehicles from the fifties tend to have three-speed manual boxes and some – such as the Bond Minicar Mark F – lack reverse. In contrast, models from the seventies often have four-speed units and their successors from the late eighties tend to have five. Today, a large proportion of new cars have six forward gears. Furthermore, automatics from (say) the eighties tend to have one less sprocket than their manually

geared equivalents. This hinders performance and fuel economy. Some of today’s automatics, however, have eight gears and match or exceed the performance/fuel efficiency of manuals. Furthermore, some enable the driver to cruise in full-auto mode or select cogs individually via a lever or paddles behind the steering wheel. In simple terms, such units come in two forms: a traditional box of cogs or a continuously variable unit that houses variable diameter pulleys shaped liked opposing cones. These are connected by a chain and ensure that any gear changes are extremely smooth and whisper quiet. But perhaps even this looks old fashioned compared to the new Controlled Rotation System Gearbox.

Barb Samardzich, vice president Product Development, Ford of Europe said “Mondeo has a rich history and a bright future, across two decades, Mondeo has stood for great driving dynamics, surprising technologies, excellent safety and outstanding fuel efficiency.” The Mondeo has made advanced features available and affordable for UK customers which will be part of its popularity. The first generation provided a standard driver’s airbag, an optional passenger airbag and offered traction control, adaptive damping, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and power steering. In 1996, a revised, restyled and lighter weight Mondeo delivered optional side airbags, which were standardised two years later together with four-channel ABS. Later in the year 2000, Ford launched the second generation Mondeo with Ford’s Intelligent Protection System, which used a network of sensors to calculate the most effective safety features to deploy in an accident. This Mondeo made heated rear seats, automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers available for the first time. The latest Mondeo

is the first Ford to feature headlamps with LED high-beam, lowbeam and signal lighting, these are quicker to illuminate, more durable and more energy-efficient than traditional filament bulb headlamps, the Mondeo’s LED headlamps turn with the steering and adapt beam projection to vehicle speed providing a greater depth of illumination at high speeds and a wider field of vision at slower speeds. Also recent powertrain enhancements to the Mondeo have resulted in CO2 emissions from just 119g/km and fuel consumption of 62.8mpg, these figures are produced from the best-selling 2.0-litre 163PS Duratorq diesel engine so the Mondeo now offers more power than its key sub-120g/km CO2 rivals. The all-new Mondeo will arrive in late 2014. Engines will include Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost which is expected to deliver leading fuel economy, and a petrol Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain. It will have segment-first adaptive full LED headlamps and debut Ford’s rear inflatable seatbelts designed to reduce head, neck and chest injuries for rear-seat passengers.

Fool Britannia ITV 1 - 18:30 - 19:00 Award winning comedian dom joly is back and ready to fool the nation once more, in the successful entertainment series Fool britannia.

Members of the public beware, as Dom unleashes a host of hilarious wind-ups and crazy pranks in more hidden-camera hijinks. The new series, will see the comedian going to extraordinary lengths to wind up the British public and features a host of outrageous new characters, disguises and set-ups, including a butcher who discovers he has just accidentally catered to a party of vegetarians, and a bridesmaid who realises she will

41

be attending the wedding from hell, courtesy of her own sister. Other tricks up Dom’s sleeve include, a talking Doner Kebab, a Bouncer training up his 10 year old son on the job, and the welcome return of the Asbo Vicar. Fool Britannia is a distinctive comedy series filled with memorable characters and new catchphrases guaranteed to provide hilarious results. In the opening episode a roadie overstays his welcome at the Cornbury festival; the residents of Nottingham awake to find the checkpoint for the North/South divide has gone up overnight and there’s proof that Bouncers really should get involved in ‘Bring Your Kid To Work Day.’

Malala: Shot For Going To School BBC 1 - 20:30 - 21:00 one year ago this week, Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by the Taliban on her way home from school.

For the first time in her own words, Panorama hears the remarkable journey of this teenage girl from Pakistan who has now become a global symbol of the fight for girls’ education. Talking exclusively to Mishal Husain, Malala describes how she stood up to the Taliban

43

when they tried to close her school, and reflects on the day she was shot on her school bus. She also tells Mishal about her battle for recovery in a Birmingham hospital and about her new life in the UK – juggling school in Birmingham with speeches and meetings on the world’s stage. Mishal also travels to Pakistan’s Swat Valley to visit Malala’s old school, and learns more about Malala’s story from her school friends and family.

Whitechapel ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Following Chandler and Miles’ discovery of a man cooking an unsavory meal and the photographic evidence of a group seemingly hunting in Whitechapel’s sewers, the team investigate a possible cannibalistic club of killers with a repulsive diet of human flesh.

Personal dramas in the Incident Room reach boiling point when Kent and Mansell butt heads. Miles’ research into the supernatural goings on in the police station point him in one particular direction, are the footsteps down the corridors, silty water and mouldy walls all the work of a vandal?

45

With a young girl missing and no lead on where to find her, Miles forces Chandler to see a psychic, but whilst she helps very little toward the case she instead reveals a message from Chandler’s past, a message he doesn’t want to hear. Chandler, Miles and the team investigate a series of bizarre and macabre murders that set them on edge. A darkness pervades their cases; something unsettling, something that lurks in the shadows that makes you not want to turn out the lights. Buchan is challenged to use his extraordinary resource of archive material to find historical precedents. Can he give the team the edge over a series of ruthless and cunning adversaries?

A Mob of around 30 Italian football fans stormed into the Piebury Corner restaurant, popular with Arsenal supporters, smashing windows, breaking chairs and injuring at least one person. Witnesses described how the men, described as napoli fans, had team scarves tied round their faces and started shouting in Italian at those inside the busy restaurant.

italian fans attack arsenal restaurant

One worker at the restaurant described how they had to duck for cover and how one customer had been attacked with a belt leaving “blood all over the floor”. The London Ambulance Service confirmed a man in his 40s was taken to hospital with head injuries, which were not thought to be serious. The gang attacked before the Champions League clash between Arsenal and Napoli at the Emirates Stadium. Emily Gould, who works at the restaurant on Holloway Road, north London, said around 50 customers were inside the restaurant when a 30 rival supporters stormed the building. She said: “I think they were Italian men with Napoli colours and scarves tied around their faces. They were shouting something in Italian, chanting and causing trouble down the street. Then then came in to the shop. I was terrified. They started swinging belts around. The customers were very frightened.” Piebury Corner owner Paul Campbell said the attack was “completely unprovoked”. The restaurant has had to close due to the damage caused: “We have had Napoli fans inside all day today; they have been having a good time and not bothering anybody at all. They have been no problem. “Then we had a minority of them come in, being violent, picking up chairs and tables. There were three

gazza “Bled dry” in Bank Scam

ForMEr England footballer Paul Gascoigne has claimed he was targeted by hackers who stole up to £50,000 from his personal bank account. The 46-year-old, whose battles with alcoholism have been well documented, said his account was hit 23 times in two days.

Gascoigne, who was once reportedly worth £14m but ended up facing bankruptcy over a £32,000 unpaid tax bill in 2011, said he had been “bled dry” in the scam. Speaking outside his Bournemouth home, he told The Sun he believed he knew who was responsible but that he did not under-

girls sat near me and these thugs just came in and grabbed the chairs from under the girls. It was completely unprovoked, I think they just picked us at random because they saw a busy restaurant and they wanted to fight someone anyone.” Mr Campbell said he had no reason to suspect any trouble from stand how it had happened. He said: “I know who did it ... It was quite a lot of money. It wasn’t that much. **** knows. I don’t know. Website, internet, I’ve not got a clue.” Police are investigating the claims by the former Tottenham and Newcastle player, who claims between

Napoli fans before kick-off: “We are popular with home fans and the travelling European fans too. This just came from nowhere.” The Metropolitan Police described the incident as “footballrelated”. A spokesman said a man had been arrested in the area for a public order offence, unconnected to the damage at Piebury Corner.

£9,000 and £50,000 had been stolen. Formerly regarded as one of the most talented footballers of his generation, Gascoigne has fought a protracted battle with alcohol including a number of stints in rehab. In February he was taken to intensive care after

a detox spell at a clinic in Arizona in the US. He later said that he had overheard doctors saying that they did not think he was going to make it. In August he was fined £1,245 drunkenly assaulting railway for staff at Stevenage train station in July.

Arsenal’s Jebb 4 Match Ban

Arsenal youngster Jack Jebb is fighting for his Arsenal career before it has properly begun after being banned for four matches and fined £1,800 by the FA for racially abusing an opponent.

The club has a zero-tolerance policy towards racist abuse or discrimination and is rightly proud of its multicultural identity. The 18-year-old creative midfielder, who left school a year early to join the club’s Academy, was charged after an incident that took place in March during an Under 18 clash against Norwich. It is understood that it was not a Norwich player or member of the management team that reported the abuse, but that the charge was brought forward by the match officials. In July the FA charged him on breach of rule E3 — ‘using abusive and/or insulting words — but the allegation also ‘included a reference to ethnic origin and/or colour and/or race.’ London-born Jebb was given the squad number 47

Messi In Court For Tax Evasion

Footballer Lionel Messi has appeared in a Spanish court to face tax evasion charges. The Barcelona midfielder entered the court in Gava, Barcelona, the suburb where he lives, with his lawyers. He made no comment to the waiting crowd of reporters and fans.

after becoming a key member of the Under 18 last season. He is compared to Jack Wilshere on the club’s official website and has impressed in the England youth set-up at Under 16 and Under 17 level. His profile reads: ‘Creative midfielder Jack, like his namesake Wilshere, joined Arsenal’s academy a year early - and has reaped the rewards. The technically-gifted central midfielder made his

breakthrough into the Under18s last season, playing seven times and scoring his first goal against Leicester with a fine free-kick. ‘Attack-minded Jack is an industrious figure in the engine room and can be deadly from set-pieces.’ Jebb escaped the FA’s new minimum five-match ban for discriminatory abuse because the incident took place last season.

Quigg On A Mission

Jorge Messi, his father, had arrived to attend the court for questioning by a judge an hour earlier. The two had been summoned to go before a judge on charges of evading tax on earnings from selling the player’s image rights. It is alleged they should have paid the Spanish tax system 4.16m Euros (£3.6m) on earnings between 2006 and 2009. The pair denies any wrongdoing. Jorge Messi paid the tax authorities 5m Euros in August - the 4.16m Euros claimed by the taxman plus interest. It is said the payment he made should significantly reduce any sentence in the event they are found guilty. Lionel Messi, 26, is widely considered to be the best footballer in the world and has been named Fifa World Player of the Year four times. Messi junior has said he has been unaf-

Scott Quigg has an unquenchable desire to reach the top of the tree. On the eve of his bid to become WBA super-bantamweight champion, he told skysports.com how he was driven to succeed from a young age.

Scott Quigg is a man on a mission. That mission is to become world champion, and is one that has consumed him from the day he took up boxing. You will rarely see a young man as driven and focused as the Bury super-bantamweight, and that’s saying something in a sport that attracts a special kind of per-

fected by the allegations hanging over him. He said in July: “I am not worried, I’m always on the side-lines of all that, just like my dad. We have our lawyers and our advisers who handle these things. We trust in them and they will solve the issue.” The case began in June when a prosecutor accused the Messis of evading tax by funnelling income derived from the player’s image rights through “purely instrumental entities”, in tax havens such as Belize and Uruguay. According to the prosecutor’s report, Messi “obtained significant income” from image rights between 2006 and 2009 on which he “should have paid tax in his subsequent declarations” to the Spanish authorities and failed to do so. The alleged offences are punishable by a jail sentence, but this is thought to be unlikely.

son. Quigg has barely spent a day out of the gym in the 10 years since he quit school early, with the support of his parents. He is, in his own words, ‘a freak’. So after 27 professional fights, in addition to just 12 in the unpaid ranks, Quigg, who will turn 25 just four days after his fight with Yoandris Salinas, finds himself fighting for the WBA title. It comes a week after it should have taken place, the fight initially slated as chief support to Haye-Fury in Manchester, but after the path Quigg has trodden he will not be upset by the delay. “You’ve got to make the most of it and adapt to situ-

ations,” he told Sky Sports. “It’s a week delay and it gives me more time to prepare. People are affected by delays if they’ve struggled to do the weight, and held it there too long. “I live the life, my weight’s always spot on. It’s just about having a couple of days’ rest and then stepping it back up. I’ll be even sharper and more ready. I don’t think I could get any more fit. I’m a freak. I just need to to stay focused for another week.” Quigg’s somewhat unorthodox climb through the ranks can be attributed to an earlier incarnation in the world of Thai kick-boxing, which gave him the experience to make an early move into the paid ranks.

give it and we breathed again. Ricardo had a long range chance but hit it into the flight path of a passing plane and Ayoze found the side netting after bustling up another opening. Suso shot at the keeper when a pass to Aridane might have been better and away defender Llorente got lucky when Ayoze’s shot slowed up for him. Even 5 minutes of added time couldn’t offer Castilla a way back and the stadium erupted as the final whistle blew. Ayoze fell to his knees shattered, it had been a defining week for his career, but he now has to put in the same intensity for full games and carry the mantle of chief goal scorer. On Sunday it’s the leaders Recreativo away at 4pm, live on TV Canarias.

speed Ayoze has looked lightweight but he made up for that by being more aggressive and running into as many strong positions as possible, it gave Aridane encouragement and finally there was a goal threat. After seeing a glancing header saved Ayoze went one better by picking up a clever pass from Chechu and tricking defender Pulido before beating the goalie. It was a proud moment, his first senior goal in the Helidoro and the 9,206 crowd rejoiced in relief. Castilla yelled for a penalty a few minutes later, Ruiz stood up to Benavente and the visiting forward went down howling, the ref didn’t

noT just a long awaited first win of the season but also a coming of age as local prospect Ayoze Perez burst into bloom with a well taken goal in the 1-0 home win over real Madrid Castilla.

We needed a beacon of hope after a murky week on and off the field, midfielder Inigo Ros, the star of last season, returned to his midfield role and added composure and direction but goal scoring has been the main problem. Borja Perez was picked to support Aridane and he was truly awful, he offered no real help to the main striker and when he had a chance to take the ball forward he was slow and weak. The Tenerife defence was on top form against a young and lively Castilla attack, Sobrino led the line but Bruno kept him in check. Sergio raced out of his goal and de-

nied Burgui and Carlos Ruiz was cool at the heart of defence. Tenerife thought they had taken the lead after 27 minutes, Chechu buried the ball in the net with a crisp shot but the ref ruled Aridane as being offside. It could be said the striker wasn’t interfering with play but the linesman had called it as soon as the ball broke. There was a let off for Tenerife at the other end, the ball came to Sobrino right in front of goal but he somehow skewed his shot up and out off the underside of the bar. Coach Cervera got the dreaded vote of confidence in the week and had to make his decisions count, at half time he replaced Borja with Ayoze and it changed everything. The 20 year old from nearby San Andres has been the brightest speck on the club radar all through his youth career but has struggled to repeat his amazing goal haul at senior level. Diego Comes Ten Man CD Marino Sunk Home To Plug On La Palma CB Canarias Gap

The first defeat of the season for CD Marino came in their top of the league clash away to Mensajero 1-0 on the nearby island of La Palma. It was always going to be a tough game but the loss of captain Airam with two yellow cards after 39 minutes was a big blow.

The first half was a tight defensive square off but with the man advantage Mensajero went for the win. A long range strike by Yeray after 65 minutes produced the only goal and Alberto had to be on top form to prevent further damage, he denied Fede with a great save while Nabil and Yosimar had late chances to level. The player was born in Icod and after his junior stint with a previous Tenerife team he played for several teams in Spains ACB league before adding another string of clubs in the Italian league. Last season Diego started off at Zanjan in Iran before joining Pistoia in Italy. The new arrival has plenty of sympathy for Fotios as he had a similar injury back in 1999 but made a full recovery.

The latest pre season friendly brought a 87-82 defeat at Bilbao but it was a good test with new Argentinian Juanpi Gutierrez scoring 11 points on his debut, the same as Nico Richotti. Blagota Sekulic was the pick of the CB Canarias line up with a 20 point haul. After starting

with a 24-30 advantage at the first quarter the La Laguna side were slowly caught and a 24-12 third quarter did the damage. Season ticket sales are going well and currently stand at 2,100 but the club is confident of breaking the 3,000 barrier.

Our Tenerife heroes will find it a tough task and will be hoping for calm seas. It’s going to really surprise a few fish and any other sea crea-

tures trying to have a Saturday morning swim but as long as they ring their diving bell they shouldn’t cause too much distress.

Reeling Them In No Place To Get At Las Galletas A Puncture Cycling in the heavy rain would seem like luxury to Fernando Nunez and Francisco Torres, these two intrepid bike enthusiasts are out to break the record for underwater distance cycling. The attempt will take place in Abades, on the east coast on Saturday 11th October from 11am.

Fishing has always been a way of life to many communities around the coast of Arona, mainly on a commercial level but the bustling modern Marina Del Sur in Las Galletas also attracts a lot of sports fishing. Next weekend the 11th, 12th, and 13th of October brings the Certamen De Pesca De Canarias packed with activities in and out of the water. From the end of the marina

wall there will be rock fishing, in the water there are several choices like kayak fishing and jigging which involves a lead sinker with a hook molded in, perfect for tempting our scaly friends in the lower reaches. Around the marina in the day there will be workshops explaining the local fishing culture, Pilates, contact sports, and a bouncy castle, and at night live music. Of course the local bars and restaurants will be open so make sure you taste some of the local catch.

It’s difficult to pin down the current record as incredibly many people seem to enjoy spinning their wheels under water. Two British ex marines hold the endurance record of 100 miles in 15 hours but that was on a fixed base in a tank at the Southampton Boat Show last year. But it looks like the man to beat is Italian Vittorio Innocente who holds the record for depth cycling at 65 metres or 213 feet in the Mediterranean at Portofino, he also traveled 110 metres along the sea bed and that’s the target for Fernando and Francisco.

o

rganisers of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar have said they are willing to stage the tournament in the winter to avoid footballers playing in the country’s scorching summer months.

Officials said they would not object to moving the tournament from its traditional slot, however, they insisted they could still run games in the summer, when temperatures exceed 40C, by fitting stadiums with cooling systems powered by renewable energy. “If the international football community reaches a consensus to move the event to an alternate date, we are able to accommodate that change,” a spokesman for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee said. “This would not affect our planning and preparation. Our commitment to cooling technologies will continue, for without it certain parts of the world will be denied the right to host such events.” Fifa’s executive committee are meeting in Zurich to discuss how best to avoid the searing heat of June and July. There are fears switching the competition to the winter months would cause major disruption to British and European domestic leagues, whose seasons traditionally end before the World Cup begins. Uefa’s 54 member associations have already backed the principle of a winter World Cup, a proposal championed by the European body’s president Michel Platini. Last month, he said he did not expect a decision this week, adding he was more concerned with an investigation which uncovered alleged mistreatment of migrant workers in Qatar.
