The nightclub and personal training entrepreneur talks about his success

If you find yourself counting down the minutes until Martini O’clock then do so in style with one of these boardroom beauties By Ken Kessler

S

ome years ago, a friend with a massive budget for a company car, chose a SAAB. It was loaded, a nice car, but it didn’t send out the signals of success that ooze from a BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Jaguar. “Exactly,” said my friend. “I don’t want clients to think I’m flash, frittering away their money. And a SAAB says I’m green and careful with my pennies, but I still like luxury.” If you’ve read The Way of the Samurai or Machiavelli’s The Prince and approach business dealings according to their suggestions, then you know every detail in your demeanour and look can affect the outcome. Too successful-looking, and certain cultures will think you’re overcharging; others will react with admiration. Dress down, and it’s the opposite. When it comes to watches, now one of the giveaways for businessmen in the manner of women judging their rivals buy shoe and handbag quality, you have only one worry. If your colleagues or rivals know their watches, you’re doomed: they’ll know the prices, too. But if you avoid the “usual suspects”, you can convey taste, discretion and fiscal acuity. And that’s exactly what every boss or client wants to see.

Longines Conquest Heritage

One of the greatest names in the watch kingdom, Longines has a history second to none. This sublime dress watch pays homage to 1950s style. This is a no-brainer if you see yourself in the Don Draper mould.

Montblanc Meisterstück Heritage Automatic

With the Meisterstück Heritage Automatic family, the company has embraced minimalism AND value for money. Your colleagues will recognise the name, but they’ll be expecting a fountain pen. Always leave ‘em guessing. From £1390

- 17 -

Bulgari Octo Solotempo

Bulgari is a tasteful as it gets, and their answer to sport/dress watches is modern classic. The least expensive model in the range in a minimalist beauty, but it also shows flair – crucial if your boardroom entertains anyone in a “lifestyle trade

- 18 -

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso

An understated classic, forever chic in its 9th decade, this masterpiece exhibits a preference for timeless design – and small “c” conservatism never hurts in the boardroom. Buy it in stainless steel, to exhibit restraint.

Ralph Lauren Safari

Ralph Lauren’s Safari time-only model, offered in both in 39mm and 45mm sizes, has a gunmetal case, suggesting a whiff of danger, but the name on the dial will match at least a half-dozen garments worn by your colleagues. And who doesn’t like to be comforted? From £2320

- 19 -

Zenith Elite Central Second

This dress watch is so elegant and minimalist that it’s almost anonymous. But you – and any watch-savvy colleagues – will know that it comes from a true manufacture. A watch for grown-ups.

Omega De Ville Hour Vision

OK, so it’s been seen on George Clooney’s wrist but that’s a good thing: everyone admires him, even people like me on the far right. This watch is as formal as it needs to be but the see-through sides will always break the ice when the conversation freezes.

- 20 -

Cartier Louis Cartier Tank

Your clients expect lunch at Scott’s and you are at the top of your game. Still, you don’t want to seem arriviste. The Cartier Tank – soon to celebrate its first century – has graced more stylish wrists than any watch in history, so it’s almost populist. Go on: a touch of the Gallic never hurts.

- 21 -

Baume & Mercier Classima Automatic 10214

With a time-only dress watch such as this, one can suggest gravitas in the office, a law court, amongst financiers or anywhere that showiness is inappropriate. ÂŁ1550

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda 1950

You’re prosperous, you can afford any watch you like, but you know that the British hate success in others. Indulge in your watch fantasies with this stunner from one of the finest watchmaking houses on the planet. Very few will know what it signifies, but it oozes class regardless.

Down Business to

Armed with high performance tech and gadgetry to increase productivity and catch the eye of others can only increase your bottom line, guaranteed* By Peter Jenkinson From its nerdy beginnings the Internet of Things (IoT) is slowly taking over just about every aspect of how businesses are run. Throughout 2015 an increasing number of connected devices and sen-sors are arriving in the workplace and this so called “ambient computing” can control almost eve-rything from getting the vending machine to trigger an order replenishment from the supply chain to embedded sensors in cupboards to track stationery levels. Interesting times, robots are far from smart enough to make entrepreneurial decisions but we’re sure someone out there is creating that computer code now - Gulp.

Call waiting - Vertu Aster The Aster is the latest arrival from English smartphone maker Vertu and is just about their best offering yet - a handset packed full of substance surrounded with spades of style. This handmade handset is exceptionally tactile and you’ll find yourself in the early days of ownership spending an inordinate amount of time with your digits across its surfaces. An impressive and responsive 5.1 inch HD touchscreen, entertainment delivered by the very decent Dolby virtual surround speaker system and a Hasselblad certified camera. Choose from a selection of leather hue finishes, add monogram and you’re ready to enjoy access to a range of exclusive services for Vertu owners. vertu.com

Travel Aid - Floh Messenger

Meet Up - iRobot Ava 500

Bigger picture - BenQ Joybee GP2

Initially this triple offering of kick-scooter, laptop bag and carry-on case engineered into one unit a touch over-the-top, that is until it has taken you from terminal to departure gate in record time. Each element of this device is crafted to impressive standards and uses the highest quality materials to bring us this stare-worthy piece of kit. It’ll induce grins, both your own and even of those realising they might not make their connection. floh.com

Whatever technology we use to keep in touch with our colleagues for anything from inspiration to updates nothing beats an actual face-to-face meeting - This of course can’t always be on the cards. This computer and app controlled iRobot Ava isn’t the first videoconferencing “bot” on the scene but it is the latest arrival and easily takes top spot. You can tap into Ava’s software and book it for a meeting slot and, when the time approaches, it will autonomously transport itself to your specified boardroom space. Integrate a teamaker and you have utopia right? irobot.com

Capable of producing a 66 inch display from a distance of just five feet this “short throw” palm-sized projector is an absolute must have piece of kit. It produces an impressive display on almost any surface so you can supersize presentations from your laptop, display images in poster sizes and show videos with sound with the built-in speaker. You can also do away with carrying extra tech around to connect to this projector as you can plug a USB key into it directly or preload the internal memory with your data. A great thing in a small package. benq.com

Take note - Livescribe Smartpen 3 Old school pen and paper gets a serious update in the form of this premium looking ballpoint pen. It’s been designed to deliver a quality writing experience but with Bluetooth on-board and writing on the dot patterned notebook it’ll send all your notes to an app on your iOS or Android device. As well as synching your notes the Livescribe app can also convert your words into digital text with impressive accuracy. The pen can also record audio and, as you speak into it you’ll perhaps have that secret agent feeling or perhaps be aware that others are looking in your with some suspicion. store.livescribe.com

Pop this tablet - Sony Xperia Z4 For iOS devotees then the tablet choice is clear, the iPad Air 2, the review is along the lines of “quite a superb piece of kit, no competition” but for Android users the line-up is huge. After using a fair few the stand-out device is this Z4, the screen is simply the best on the tablet scene, a 10.1 inch affair that produces 2K (thats double High Definition) image quality and watching videos on it is an utter joy. Add a lightning quick processor that allows multiple apps and tasks to be opened and running without producing any lag and a waterproof screen that’ll let you do underwater tasks for up to 30 minutes and you can almost feel the buy button beneath your finger. sony.co.uk

Upright position Varidesk ProDesk 54 There’s been an increasing interest in this type of workspace the past couple of months, until now however it was a choice of to sit or to stand at your desk in the interests of posture care. This new desk however offers the choice of using it in the monday morning position (seated) and moving to the healthier and apparently more productive standing position instantly by releasing the springs on the desk to achieve the perfect height to continue your tasks upright. Best for a home from home

Home House

20 Portman Square W1H 6LW Home House maintains its mission of acting as a ‘home from home’ for its customers. The Club opened in 1773 where Elizabeth, Countess of Home, commissioned George III’s Architect, James Wyatt, to build a sophisticated ‘pavilion’ for her enjoyment. After firing James Wyatt In 1775, she offered his competitor Robert Adam the chance to complete the House. Home House now boasts 18th Century architecture, an affluent neo-classical design and a friendly atmosphere with virtually no rules at all – although nudity is greatly discouraged. However, best not to opt for Lady Charlotte’s room if you are prone to light sleeping...it’s rumoured to be haunted with many unexplained shadows and creaks in the night!

Who hangs out there? Expect to find yourself among an array of celebrities, from the entrepreneur to the Spice Girl. Members have included Duncan Bannatyne,Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Geri Halliwell and Lionel Richie.

Now, don’t be disheartened – the Reform Club does not have a political affiliation and serves purely as a social function.

Who hangs out there? The Club has been used as a backdrop to many films, including James Bond’s Die Another Day and Paddington. Here, you may find yourself exploring your artistic talent and end up being featured in a Hollywood blockbuster.

Best for the art scene

The Arts Club

40 Dover Street W15 4NP The Arts Club was instituted in 1863 by ‘men of vision’in order to provide a place for people interested in the Arts, Literature or Sciences. It has a particularly impressive history: the Club survived two World Wars and a direct hit during the Blitz in 1940. In 2011, it underwent a complete renovation which transformed The Arts Club into today’s respected institution. The Club aims to be a place where creative and entrepreneurial patrons come together and exchange ideas, and customers can expect to enjoy the Club’s personal art collection that focusses mostly on British-based artists and the best of the international scene. The permanent collection includes work by Tomas Saraceno, John Badlessari and John Stezaker. This autumn the Club has plans to add 16 new rooms and suites.

Best for variety The Hospital Club

24 Endell Street WC2H 9HQ The story goes that one evening, founders Paul Allen and Dave Stewart, were having a drink in Covent Garden and spotted a boarded-up building over the road (formerly known as St Paul’s Hospital). Together they comprised with a plan to revive the elegant exterior and transform it into a hub of creativity. The Hospital Club is set across three floors: second floor members’ can enjoy the use of the restaurant, main cocktail bar, Bellini bar and a screening room; the third floor offers 15 bedrooms; the fourth floor includes a Martini Bar and Lounge, the Loft Lounge and The Oak Room that features a live performance space. The Hospital Club curates and hosts up to four public exhibitions of contemporary art every year, focussing on innovation and Digital Art.

Best for gambling

Les A

5 Hamilton Place W1J 7ED For many, gambling should be a sport played only in the most secretive of locations. Les Ambassadeurs Club, or better known to its members as ‘Les A’, has been open to famous names, aristocracy and diplomats since it began in the early 19th Century. In 2006, the Club went through a re-vamp and began to acknowledge the building’s classical features. ‘Les A’ has since gained reputation as one of London’s most exclusive and distinguished gaming clubs. Their casino floor is available 24/7 and is styled so that members can play individual games or socialise. A new greenroofed terrace with views of Park Lane and Hyde Park operates as an extension of the casino restaurant, where members can enjoy the comfortable space and the opportunity to wine and dine in the fresh air.

Who hangs out there? That information must remain private; what happens in their four walls must stay in their four walls. However, Les A does host the very best of gamers and gamblers from across the world. Since 1879, Les A has hosted many members of the royal family and London glitterati.

How to get a membership card? Les A charges an annual fee of £25,000, but they also offer a walk in 3-day temporary membership. lesambassadeurs.com

Morton’s holds an array of contemporary European art sourced from the private collection of the owner, Marlon Abela. “The Groucho club is an interesting half way house between the clubs where old men try to get to dance with very young women and the places where even older men like to fall asleep”

o who should I find myself trying to make conversation with in a packed London nightclub, but Lady Annabel Goldsmith? “It must be so flattering, having a club named after you,” I blurted out. The widow of the late financier Sir Jimmy Goldsmith – mother of Jemima and Zac etc – looked at me, aghast. Too late, I realised that I was not in Annabel’s – the club that the socialite’s first husband Mark Birley had named after her – but, oh dear, oh dear, Tramp, over in Jermyn Street. It is very easy to get these sort of clubs that cater for old ravers confused. They were both founded in the Sixties, and, while my old boss Nigel Dempster, the late, great Daily Mail social columnist, might have frequented them, they had long since ceased to be places where newsmakers congregated by the time I got to edit my own social diary. There are, of course, other, more grown up clubs in the capital, where the last thing any of the members want to do is to dance, certainly not with each other. Still, it’s telling that David Cameron, who belonged to White’s - probably the most exclusive of the lot – felt the need to resign because it was one of the small minority which still refuses to admit women as members. Some of them do feel terribly anachronistic, but arguably that is part of their charm. No use of mobile phones, except in specified areas, suits and ties, please, and the general rule that what is said in these clubs, stays in the clubs.

- 57 -

Most of these establishments require you to be proposed and seconded for membership by existing members – this keeps them in the hands of like-minded folk – and, once in – this can take a few years – it is usually around a grand a year in charges to stay in. Some of them have very obvious advantages: the RAC Club, in Pall Mall, for instance, possesses a splendid swimming pool. The Garrick has lately added a marvellous snooker table to its amenities, as well as a great library. There are others, however, that seem a lot less appetising. Whisper it ever so gently, but the Athenaeum – that vast neoclassical pile close to the Foreign Office – numbered among its members Sir Jimmy Savile. The Groucho club, established in the mideighties, is an interesting half way house between the clubs where old men try to get to dance with very young women – Tramp, Annabel’s – and the places where even older men like to fall asleep on well upholstered chairs beneath their copies of The Times – White’s, the Athenaeum etc. Can any of them, at either end of the scale, really be said to be centres of action, places where the rich and powerful get together to plot the future course of the nation? Of course not. Are they for the most part glorified nursing homes where the clocks stopped at 1939? I am afraid so. Is it quite fun to go to them and repose in old world splendour and make believe we are still a country of ladies and gentlemen who all know how to behave? Emphatically, yes.

BACK to BUSINESS

This spring show the world you’re the boss with classical tailoring with a twist

By Simon Brooke

I

t’s time to shake the sand out of your sandals and get back to business. But if the idea of the desk and the morning commute leaves you with a heavy heart then you need to jazz up your work wardrobe. With the waistcoat a continuing trend this Chester Barrie has this classic three piece in mid grey. For a slightly more unusual look there’s another version in navy blue with a Prince of Wales check running through it. A pocket square is one of those important little accessories that sets you apart from the crowd and Chester Barrie has a range that is both smart but slightly daring.

Hip tailoring duo Thom Sweeney have recently launched their Ready To Wear range which gives classic business suit styling with a fashionable edge. Fans include supermodel David Gandy. As well as jackets and matching trousers there’s a smart double breasted coat in navy blue. If you really fancy creating a stir in the office then Dashing Tweeds is the brand for you. Created by photographer Guy Hills its look is loud, sometimes slightly louche but always confidently stylish. Again if you’re looking for something that’s business like but not staid, John Lobb has a classic black or dark grey shoe with two buckles and a sleek, smart ankle boot with laces and a buckle.

Taste tradition Elegant surroundings and quite possibly the best beef in London. Jan Jaques samples the menus at Knightsbridge’s Rib Room restaurant

Y

ou get the feel of a film set, walking into the Rib Room. It has the rarefied air of a gentleman’s club, understated but gorgeous furnishings, and a showstopper of a bar. In one of the most ostentatious areas of London, just off Sloane Street, the restaurant has the chutzpah to have stayed at the top of its game for over a half a century. So expectations are always going to be high. The Rib Room was launched in 1961 and rested its reputation on serving the best beef in London. These days it has three AA rosettes, and the reputation endures under head chef

Alan Rudge. The fillet steak I had was the best I’ve ever tasted. In fact, I blame the Rib Room for ruining me for steak, I simply don’t fancy the idea of eating it anywhere else. Midweek dinner here is one of those treats you wish you’d given yourself long before. I’d strongly advise making time for the lovely heated outside area, for cocktails as a preamble to the old-style elegance of the restaurant. The centrepiece of the room is its astonishing bar. Think of the most obscure brew, and it’ll be there. The Rib Room’s bar manager and mixologist Saverio Vicari, has a reputation for having the Midas touch with his concoctions.

- 64 -

If you like Gin, you’ll love this, as the bar specialises in this London spirit, with its own delicate blend. If you prefer a vodka base, try the Le Fizz - a combination of Grey Goose, St Germain elderflower liqueur, lime juice and soda. Unforgettable. The service was suave, subtle and spot-on. We were treated with courtesy from the start. Some restaurants confuse attentiveness with just plain annoyingness. Here, they get it just right. Every answer to a question was considered and informative. My guest was given the lowdown on her particularly succulent starter

of prawn cocktail with enthusiasm. He was right - it was out of this world. By the time my Loch Fyne Angel oysters arrived, I knew pretty much everything about them, enjoying them all the more. From the classic menu, I chose rare fillet of beef which came with slow-cooked plum tomato and Portobello mushroom, and was exquisite. The steak fries were crisp and golden on the outside, floury and delicate on the inside. One of my guests could not resist the roast rib of Aberdeen Angus Beef with Yorkshire pudding and proclaimed it mouth-watering. It’s worth mentioning that portions are more

than healthy - she struggled to get through hers, and reluctantly left some. Though it may be the carnivore’s delight, this dining room is quick to satisfy those not in the mood for meat. My other guest enjoyed a plain Dover sole with Morecambe Bay shrimps and hazelnut. The lobster thermidor’s reputation precedes it, as well. For dessert we shared a meltingly rich warm walnut brownie, chocolate mousse with white chocolate and mint parfait. The truffles afterward were heavenly. fine wines and champagnes. We preferred to let renowned sommelier Rober Tozser’s team guide us in the right direction. Top tip - always glance at his choice. While we were there, one of the favoured whites was a fresh and intense Chablis, Domaine Simonnet-Febvre, Burgundy 2012. One of the reds recommended, an Australian Shiraz/ Riesling (Dandelion Vineyards, Lion’s Tooth of Maclaren Vale). You don’t need an excuse to sample true British Haute Cuisine, served in luxury. And there’s added bonus that for a short time at least, you do get to dine like a star.

Arts and Craft Surrounded by Scottish tweed, British limestone and London designed furniture and lighting, Tempus samples the very British new restaurant, café, cocktail bar and shop by Stevie Parle and Tom Dixon. By Laura Tennant Take the Jubilee Line five stops from London Bridge, and you’ll find yourself at North Greenwich, London’s shiniest new quartier thanks to plans for 10,000 new homes plus a foodie-arty hub and park. Chief among the area’s new attractions is Craft London, a restaurant-shop-bar-café collaboration between chef Steve Parle (Dock Kitchen, Rotorino) and designer Tom Dixon. As you’d expect, the setting is boldly original, with banquette seating and tables

in a symphony of aubergine and blue curved around the outside of Craft HQ in an elegant, airy doughnut (so great views of the river and the bright lights of Canary Wharf from the top floor bar). With coffee-roasting, fish-smoking, beekeeping and meat-curing done in house, and vegetables sourced from Craft’s kitchen garden, the emphasis is on immaculately sourced local ingredients given a retro spin; think smoked and grilled eel with treacle and

brine-pickled leek and Ross chicken, bone broth and dumplings with ramson emulsion, pickled Alexanders, pork scratchings and kombucha egg. Bafflingly à la mode though the menu descriptions may sometimes be, the results are excellent. In fact, Craft combines Parle’s serious cooking chops with unusually delightful service and one of London’s most beautiful interior spaces. We’ll be back. craft-london.co.uk

cava chameleon

Top of the Pops

Cava is the sort of drink I associate with bad hangovers. In Spain. Drinking in the early hours, or whenever it was safe to avoid the sun. Round a pool. Without trucks on. TMI, I know but that was the Seventies. It was the time that most of us Brits discovered cava – in the hills around Marbella or on other parts of the Costas – the first thing in the shopping trolley, and the first thing in the fridge. Cava used to be what proseco is today, a cheap sparkling wine that allows the greater-unwashed to think they are the hoi polloi. If the cast and crew of Sexy Beast weren’t on it 24/7 then they really should have been. So it is excellent news that the cava producers have clubbed together and are bringing out a new quality classification, one that will show cava off for what it is capable of – an age-old method of vinification, and one that can achieve really great things. The classification is going to be out at the end of the year and will be called Cava del Paraje Calificado. Unlike the soapy, cheap supermarket cavas that are picked and shipped in 9 months, these will need to be single-estate wines, with handpicked grapes and aged for at least 3 years. In a fascinating tasting held at London’s top cava restaurant Copa de Cava, reservas and gran reservas were ‘shown’ alongside a range of tapas that brought out the age and complexity of the wines. It was a revelation. The variety of the grapes used – macabeo, xarel-lo, parellada, pansa blanca, garnaxta – ageing by as much as 10 years and a varied mix of production methods meant that for the first time people were getting to taste what cava really is capable of. Oh, and don’t bother looking in the supermarket for these, they are far superior to that. Thank God.

Gramona, III Lustros, Brut Nature Gran Reserva 2007 Celebrating its 50th anniversary four years ago, this is one of the most iconic cava producers on account of them ageing the cava in bottles for six years, twice the time necessary for a Gran Reserva classification. The nose is simply extraordinary, an intense mix of fruits, peel, herbs, nuts, toasted brioche and toffee, and the palate is creamy, full and an after-taste that goes on and on and on. £15.79 a bottle eBuywines.com

- 72 -

Recaredo, Serral Del Vell Estate, Brut de Brut 2006 Like Gramona, this is single vineyard wine using just xarel-lo and macabeo grapes, although this cava is aged even longer – a minimum of seven years and three months. To give the wine structure the xarel-lo are barrelaged in oak. Everything is done by hand from picking, riddling and disgorging and the attention to detail hits you immediately – the nose and palette match perfectly. “This is cava, Jim, but not as we know it.” £16.97 a bottle eBuywines.com

Agusti Torello Mata, Kripta, Brut Nature Gran Reserva, 2007 One of a number of cavas produced by this outstanding estate, the most immediately striking things being the bottle shape – one that demands pouring out and finishing in one fell swoop. Don’t let the bottle fool you, this is a serious drop and not a gimmick. Aged for four years, it is a blend of xarel-lo, macabeo and parellada. The bubbles are big and slow, and the crisp bouquet is followed by a big blast of ripe fruit, toast and vanilla. Parker gave it 94 points. £70 a bottle hangingditch.com

Perfection in a glass

Cognac galore

At the end of Sideways, Alex Payne’s searing comedy about wine appreciation, our hero drinks his prized bottle of Cheval Blanc from a polystyrene cup in a fast food restaurant. I have yet to drink such a stunning a wine from so humble a vessel but it does hold true that people often take little care about what type of glass they serve fine wine in and also what state the glass is in. With these people firmly in mind Lalique has added three new glasses to its 100 Points collection by internationally acclaimed wine critic, James Suckling. The three new glasses can be bought individually or as part of a set and are made from the finest Lalique crystal, for the most discerning of wine lovers.

There is no denying that we are into a cocktail boom in Britain right now with the standard of mixologists and bar tenders getting better and more imaginative by the day. But spare a thought for some of the classics. Personally I love finishing an evening with a Brandy Alexander or starting one with a Sazerac, Rendezvous or a classic Champagne Cocktail, there is something about the floral nature of cognac that makes it so perfect for mixing. The philosophy practiced by the Alexander Arne team is based on four maximas, which are devotion, creative responsibility, original designer craftwork, perfection of execution, and a long-time artisan tradition put in a modern context. These unwritten laws of the art of jewellery determine the unique style of every Arne piece. G

eneva is serene: a city of peace, tranquility and freedom. Well-known for its placidity and calmness, Geneva is perfectly harboured among the most serene of neighbourhoods, set on the shores of Europe’s largest Alpine lake, Lake Leman (otherwise known as Lake Geneva). At the foot of the Jura mountains and just a short trek from the French Alps, this Swiss location and its many qualities won’t take long to enchant and entice any curious city-breaker looking for the perfect weekend getaway. Geneva’s position, superbly strung as it is to the edges of France, plus its many connections to the rest of Europe and an international airport just ten minutes from the city centre, has proved to be a draw for visitors for many years. The city itself has 185,000 inhabitants who have established themselves on the historical edges of the river Rhône – the south-western end of Lake Leman. As one of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe, its strategic importance as a shallow crossing point was why the Romans occupied

it in 121BC, and why the high ground on the northern shore was the first area to be developed as a trading settlement. The city now blossoms with character and colour, and is a noteworthy place for the culture-seeking adventurer in us all. Upon arrival, the city’s towering, snow-capped peaks and beaming waterside views create an overwhelming and impressively exquisite backdrop that encompasses a cheerful city that calls out to be explored. As well as its beautiful surroundings, Geneva has a rich history and is home to numerous museums, art galleries, wonderful parks and prestigious schools – this is a place that has a tale to tell. The Red Cross has it headquarters here and the city is the hub of Protestantism (not forgetting that Geneva is also the birthplace of fine watchmaking). Referred to as the most compact metropolis, the ‘Peace Capital’ and the fifth most expensive city in the world, Geneva has many treasures just waiting to be unlocked.

Geneva is the undisputed capital of Swiss cuisine. Local specialities include fondue, raclette, lake fish, smoked sausage and a variety of casseroles. With its proximity to the lake it will come as no surprise that the city possesses a fine selection of crayfish dishes. Cottage Café is a tapas-style restaurant and its highly delicious platter of crayfish is accompanied by an eclectic, cosy atmosphere just 50 yards away from the water’s edge. Located just behind the plaza – home to the Duke of Brunswick’s Gothic canopy – Cottage Café is the perfect venue for those wishing to absorb the splendour of one of the most flavourfilled yet calming cities in the world. First staged in 1939, this popular nautical festival has established itself as one of the highlights of the international regatta calendar. At its best with a fresh Swiss lakeside breeze and the sun at its peak, this annual summer event hosts champions from all over Europe. No trip to Geneva would be complete without seeing the spectacle of this show on the shore that features 500 sailboats. For those avoiding the gusty coast, take a trip to the heart of Plainpalais, where you will find the Patek Philippe Museum. Here, you can browse through the library and discover the origins of Swiss, Genevan and European watchmaking and enamels from the 16th to the 19th century.

Gstaad Palace

For over 100 years Gstaad Palace has been offering unique experiences to guests from Elizabeth Taylor to Peter Dean.

T

he horse drawn sleigh is waiting for us in the freezing dark. The team stands motionless, their breath steaming from their flared nostrils as the two drivers make last minute checks on the harnesses, their hats from a bygone era, perhaps even props from a Hammer Horror movie. Without speaking, we are sat down covered with two heavy blankets and strapped in to our adventure. Where we are going is not entirely clear, but we have been assured that it will be a unique journey, perhaps even the highlight of our skiing trip to Gstaad Palace. As the horses pick up speed, so their bells echo off the approaching dark woods, the village where we boarded getting farther and farther behind us until the lights disappear completely and are replaced by a canopy of stars. As the mountain track steepens so the pace of the horses slows and their breathing accelerates. Lanterns illuminate the craggy rocks above our heads. Every now and then the runners of the sleigh slide close to the edge of the track, adding a frisson of excitement.

- t r av el -

After 40 minutes or so, and with the freezing clear night just beginning to sting our cheeks, the sleigh pulls to an abrupt halt and without speaking the drivers beckon us out. We are each handed a mug of steaming gluhwein and stand in the pitch dark staring up at the majesty of the sky. The bright stars are the same ones that we stared up at as kids, with those self-same ‘big questions’. Close enough to touch. The hot, spiced wine having weaved its magic, we head off again into the night. In another 15 minutes the horses start racing, in the way they do when Christopher Lee is about to appear. We are speeding through a wood, with farm lights glinting through the trees. What follows is not what you might associate with Gstaad Palace, a 5-star luxury hotel that is a favourite of royalty and

celebrities. We arrive at a secluded farm whose owner does a pop-up menu of fondue… or fondue. The tablecloths are plastic and the table dressing non-existent. The meal itself is simple – air-dried beef, fennel and lemon tea, pinot noir, and a traditional Swiss cheese fondue – but a truly delicious and genuinely Swiss experience. As we ride back, our cheeks a lot warmer and our laughter echoing off the mountains I reflect that this is just one of the ways that a 5-star luxury hotel with 102 years of active service manages to keep being vital – by offering its guests experiences that are genuinely unique. Apart from this night-time sleigh ride Gstaad Palace offers guests other bespoke treats such as: a Ski Butler to meet you on the slopes with a to-die-for picnic of cakes and cheese; a night on a snow-groomer at

- 88 -

near-vertical slopes; and staying at the Walig Hut, a back-to-basics mountain hut that gives guests a unique perspective on Swiss life 1700m up away from all technology (OK but with a few frills like a 3-course champagne dinner!). The reason that two thirds of guests at the Palace are repeat visitors is that the hotel has got the right mix between being very posh and very relaxed. Andrea Scherz is the third generation of his family who has run the hotel since the Second World War and with that knowledge of what works and what doesn’t comes a consistency and a familiarity that is comforting. The staff oozes warmth, secure in their hotel’s heritage and their own future – some staff have been here for over 40 years and remember the tax-haven days when Liz Taylor, Richard Burton, Robert Wagner and Julie Andrews used to rub shoulders in the bars.

- t r av el -

Another Scherz philosophy is that all the operating profits are ploughed back into the hotel. The recently opened spa facilities are proof of that. The Wellness suite is beautifully appointed and exactly the right standard of comfort and sophistication that you would expect from a leading hotel of the world. Lying in a jacuzzi at night with the steam pouring into the sky is a rare treat as is diving straight from a Finnish dry room into the snow. There is literally nothing quite like it. Sunrise from the balcony of my suite overlooking the Bernese Oberland was actually pretty special too. One can only imagine what it looks like from one of the two freshly refurbished Tower Suites or the renovated Penthouse Suite. The hotel gives access to the Sannenmoser skiing region that offers over 200k of world class skiing for all abilities. The slopes are less crowded than the French Alps and the food in the mountain restaurants just as wholesome; rosti eaten straight out of the cast iron pan in the open air is definitely one over the French. Silver Sport, the hotel’s on-site ski boutique is just one of the many first class facilities that makes life effortless during your stay, whether you are skiing or not. There are five restaurants including Le Grill that offers fine dining with products of the finest provenance. The wine selection is broad and gives a rare opportunity to sample Switzerland’s finest and rarest such as Yvorne and Gamaret. When you do you’ll understand why the Swiss hoard these wines for themselves. Nothing at the Palace is much trouble. There are legends of the diminutive guest who had his entire suite raised six inches throughout so that he could see the outside view as intended, the woman who only served her dog vintage champagne and another who would only go ‘walkies’ inside a freshly turfed shower. Putting the customer first and ensuring their stay is unique are two mantras of a truly exceptional hotel.

Exploring the perfect mix of luxury and style Peter Dean travelled to Val d’Isere to stay at France’s best ski chalet and discovered that skiing doesn’t come any better.

a

n invite to ski at Marco Polo, France’s best ski chalet is one thing. When it involves skiing with Britain’s best ever winter Olympian, Chemmy Alcott, the excitement is palpable but mixed with waves of panic and nausea. “Good luck with that” friends laughed, knowing that although I can get down most slopes it is with a modicom of speed and style. The invite came with free workout lessons, as if to drum home I would be better declining and passing over to a young jock who could ski backwards with Chemmy down an ice wall in fading light, skidding in a hockey stop outside the après ski and then diving into the mosh, half a dozen flaming Sambuca to the better. My fears were unfounded. Chemmy was learning to snowboard, so spent more time on her back than any of us, while it seems some of these youngsters in Val d’Isere still have a lot to

learn in the Jaeger-shots department. No, the only real worry about going to Marco Polo is that when you have visited, there is not a lot of point going anywhere else. In short it is the perfect mix of luxury, comfort and style. It is as if a multimillionaire with genuinely good taste came up with a cunning plan to devise the best ski chalet that could ever be built… which is kind of how it happened. The building itself is large and traditionallooking and built across four floors using a mix of cutting edge technology, ancient artefacts and modern art. The first thing you see when you arrive, beyond the Buddha statues and the church candles, is a giant indoors pool and wellness suite, with the largest flat screen imaginable. To the right is a champagne bar straight out of Barbarella with white shaggy sofas made for sinking in. It’s classy bling if that isn’t oxymoronic.

- 90 -

While the basement houses a techno gym that the French alpine team uses, there are also games rooms and massage suites to keep the pleasure/ pain principles in balance. The top floor is an enormous vaulted living and dining area, with a picture postcard view of the town and the slopes beyond. The six double rooms that are on the floor in-between are each individually styled and appointed, using the latest Sonos technology and pampering products from Christian Lacroix. The detail that chalet-owner Bernard has gone to pays off in spades. Every corner, every view inside and out is picture book. Your Instagrams will be more liked than any on your page. In fact, you may well find some jealous ‘friends’ stop following you. The location is not bad either. Set in the middle of Val d’Isere, Marco Polo is within sliding distance of excellent après ski bar Cocorico and the late

night shenanigans of Dick’s Tea Bar, but nestled back from the hubbub so you can still hear an alpine stream through the open window as you snuggle under the duck down. Espace Killy, which is the vast skiing region in which Val is set, also incorporates the more populous and commercial Tignes resort, and has glorious skiing for all conditions and abilities. Even me. Luxury ski chalet operator Consensio, who do not own the chalets but work with their owners, totally ‘get’ skiing. They have managed to take all the pain out of the experience (well most of it) and the attention to detail will be noticed and appreciated by the die-hards. But what is telling is that you could stay here and not feel compelled to put your ski boots on. In fact, half the time I was praying for a whiteout. As its name suggests Marco Polo is all about discovering the world’s riches and then indulging

in them. The style, design, detail and high end finishing are one thing, the other is the chalet team that orchestrates all of the moving parts and makes the dream a reality and the reality a dream. We skied hard, we partied hard, we chilled-out while a Canadian singer gigged in the living room, a giant cinema screen displaying singalong lyrics. There was an instructive and well-pitched wine evening in the on-site tasting room, hosted by a local retailer Antoine Veuriot who can get you pretty much any bottle you want. Chef Liam Malcolmson has a broad and contemporary palate, and the menu is also bespoke for each party. The mountain lunch stops were the best in the area and included, of course, an afternoon rave at La Folie Douce that has become de rigeur for visitors to the two resorts. Oh. Did I mention the unlimited Perrier-Jouet that starts as soon as you step off your jet?

ith Greece going through something of a rough ride at the moment, Athens might not be at the top of your hit list, but consider this. Now is the perfect time to visit because, not only has the mercury dipped to a beautiful balmy level, but the city is much quieter. Athens is a major hub of both art and history – with world-class boutique hotels, wine bars and museums to boot, and at this time of year, sightseeing is a real pleasure. In the heart of downtown, within walking distance of the sleek new Acropolis museum, is the five-star Grecotel Pallas Athena. A boutique art hotel, it’s an excellent base for a cultural foray into the capital. The hotel has serious wow factor. On arrival, I feel rather like I’ve walked into a gallery, with striking white walls, pop art and eye-catching sculptures and taxidermy. The open fire is a nice touch. As well as the permanent collection, the hotel regularly hosts exhibitions from around the world. Over summer, the intricate paintings of Qinghua (Ioanna) Lin, entitled “China Meets Greece”, were displayed on the 1st floor. Each of the 63 individually designed rooms continues the artistic theme, with contemporary decor and quirky murals. A selection of “Graffiti Suites” offer the unique experience of sleeping amid the work of the city’s street artists. Children will love the Spiderman and Smurf rooms. The loft suites are more minimalist, but are homely and spacious, with large terraces and views of Lycabettus Hill. Breakfast is vast and varied and features traditional pastries and specially blended herbal tisanes, all laid out on a table for you to choose from. Many of the ingredients are sourced from Grecotel’s 40-hectare organic farm in Crete, and include seasonal fruits and vegetables, Greek cheeses and possibly the best yoghurt you will ever taste. At night, the lounge turns into stylish cocktail territory, while the restaurant, overlooking bustling Kotzia Square, is a sophisticated spot in which to dine.

City of the Gods Before the scorching summer arrives, there’s no better time to visit the Greek capital

By Katie Monk We sampled the Aphrodisiac menu, which assigns ingredients according to gender. The imaginative dishes fuse Mediterranean, Greek and Cretan flavours, and play upon the theme of love. The ladies’ menu includes salmon, avocado and chilli peppers, veal, asparagus and truffle oil. The men enjoy seafood, wild onions and olives. The meal was an education as much as a culinary experience. As Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty, the ancient Greeks used to pray to her to keep their lovers. Aphrodisiacs have been used for thousands of years to enhance virility, and come in the form of herbs, elixirs and, of course, food. If all that doesn’t send you running for the bedroom, Athens has seen some fantastic wine bars open up over recent months. Often tucked away behind unmarked doors, in basements or on roof tops, they make ideal stop-offs when out sightseeing, but better yet as secret hideaways to while away the night. I’m sure Aphrodite would approve.

Floating high Writer Emma Oliver seeks out the exclusive and the unusual in London’s Dockands

T

he problem with going to a concert at the O2 is that there isn’t much of a choice when it comes to luxury nearby accommodation – or so I believed. I’d booked tickets to celebrate my husband’s big Four-o and a friend had recommended the Sunborn London Yacht Hotel. As we approached, guests drenched in sunlight with cocktails in hand were relaxing on deck. Launched in East London in June 2014 (the hotel – not the yacht; that was tugged from Finland where it was built and first established as a floating hotel ten years ago), it is an impressive vessel. Still, I hadn’t anticipated such a beautifully glamorous reception. The glitzy chandelier and triple gold and glass balconies give the impression of cruising the high seas. Laughter emanated from the lounge deck behind the front desk, where I spied the tempting cocktail menu. I was also aware of those with briefcases checking in and out – London City Airport is only a stone’s throw away. The Sunborn is geared up for both work and play. It quite literally allows its guests to float between business and pleasure, situated as it is in Royal Victoria Dock between the hustle of the ExCel Centre and the gondola-connected hub of entertainment that is the O2 Arena.

For work, there is a miniature version of the United Nations auditorium; a seriously ideal conference room, along with free unrestricted WiFi access and tablets in every room. On the floor below guests can unwind in the onboard Elemis Spa; a beautiful space that promises to leave you floating in so many other ways. Rated four-star but with five-star accommodation available, you’ll want to head straight to an executive suite for a room with a Jacuzzi and sauna (a nod to the ship’s Finnish roots), or to a junior suite with river views looking back to Canary Wharf. One of the greatest aspects of a floating hotel are the amazing three-dimensional views, something you wouldn’t easily find in a land-based hotel. The best views are reserved for the restaurant and bar areas – from the Land’s End restaurant you can feast your eyes upon the beautiful London skyline. On the two nights we stayed the weather couldn’t have been better and we sat out beneath the stars, enjoying the quirkiness of the situation. We ate at the Gun Gastro pub in Coldharbour and the Canary Gaucho Grill, but there are dozens of other fine-dining eateries nearby – and a fair bit of history too. Right-hook muscle Ford’s new UK-spec Mustang has proved a huge success with over 1,600 orders taken so far for the £29,995 American muscle car. While US muscle cars have always been available in the UK on import it’s meant that fans have had to drive left hookers to experience the gutsy Americana motoring vibe. Cars such as Dodge’s Challenger and

Chevrolet’s Camaro have revived the muscle car along with Ford’s Mustang in recent years but only Ford has taken the leap to now provide a right hand drive car. It’s been a smart move. With order books now overflowing and 70% of drivers going for the 410bhp £32,995 model, UK-spec Mustang’s aren’t available until the middle of 2016 at the earliest.

Class is open Mercedes has taken the roof of its S-Class to create a car with what it claims is the largest folding fabric roof ever on a production car. The range-topping S-Class is available in four-door limo form and as a two-door coupe, but this new cabriolet version seems born for California. The new model’s roof seeks to preserve the lines of the coupe but sacrifices some of the original’s curve to engineer the foldable top. A large rear window has been maintained, however. Prices are set to start from around £100,000 and go on to more than £200,000 when UK sales begin in early 2016. Pictured here, the car is partnered with the S-Class model that ran from 1961 to 1971, the last S-Class to feature a folding roof.

To mark the end of production of the classic Defender Land Rover are rolling out three special edition models. Our favourite is the Huey Junior series of which only 400 will be made. A homage to the original 1940s Land Rover, the model takes it’s name from the first Series 1 Land Rover called Huey Senior because of its number plate HUE 166. This new model features that number plate sequence stitched into the Almond cloth seats, a very fetching retro Grasmere Green shade outside, colour-coded steel wheels, white roof and a 1940s style grille to complete the look. Yours for £30,900. Pricey for such a car, yes, but there are many that will want this slice of automotive history.

heart Power, presence and grace? The Bentley Mulsanne Speed is a car for the individual who wants it all and wants to world to know it.

- 102 -

- d r i v en -

By Conor McNicholas

I

n late July I made the annual pilgrimage to Silverstone for the Silverstone Classic, a weekend of vintage racing, Pimms, car clubs and as much Ferrari as you can eat. For those of us with a limited slip-diff under our solar plexus it’s rather like the automotive Glastonbury and this year didn’t disappoint. A highlight of Saturday morning’s racing schedule were the pre-war racing cars, the drivers still able to hurtle at terrifying speeds in something not that far removed from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The king of the prewar race cars were the Bentleys – huge hulking 4 ½ litre and later 6 ½ litre racers that even now make other cars on the track look like Matchbox models. The drivers of these pre-war monsters were The Bentley Boys, a set of gentlemen racers known for their daring and imagination as much as their on track triumphs. It’s this spirit of entitlement, panache and lust for power that lives on in Bentley’s latest on-road monster the Mulsanne Speed. Bentley’s ultimate limo has been with us now since 2010 but this 2015 model makes you want to wrestle the steering wheel from your long-serving butler and take on the driving yourself. While the Mulsanne was never short of power by any regard, this Speed model takes things to an even greater extreme The bonnet of a standard Mulsanne houses Bentley’s meaty, characterful and highly respected 6 ¾ litre twin turbo V8 delivering an output of 512hp. That set-up with takes you from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and on to 184mph. The Speed specification, however, wrestles 537hp from the engine and the extra 25hp are put to good use. Top whack in the Speed is now a supercar rivalling 190mph and the 0-60 drag drops to 4.8. Taking a car that weighs over 2.7 tonnes with you at the wheel to 60mph in under 5 seconds is nothing short of magical. This is a gargantuan car, and rightly so, it is The Don of the tight-knit Bentley clan. It carries its majesty with distinct purpose but always with immense grace and refinement. Perhaps because of this, when you take the wheel it really is very

- 103 -

- d r i v en -

easy to find yourself doing some spectacular speeds. Eighty miles per hour feels like 30mph, and forays well into three figure speeds feel no more than 60mph if you edge up there prudently. Remarkable. But it’s dropping the right foot with gusto that reveals the Mulsanne Speed’s party trick. Slip it into Sport mode with a tap to the auto gearstick (a fist-sized pillar and head that feels like a finely carved newel-post), hover at a red light and gasp in awe as you drop your foot to the floor at green. All four wheels seem to interrogate the tarmac in an instant, working out the perfect distribution through their central computer brain, before the two rear ones deliver a burst of traction so stupefying you wonder if it was just a dream. Which is why you have to do it all over again at the next lights just to make sure. Like all great power, it’s very easy to get too used to it. Distances shrink, cars simply disappear and your whole attitude to the road changes. All this glorious power is wrapped up in an interior that would make a Renaissance Pope blush. Acres of quilted leather envelope you in beautifully constructed seats, thick carpets bounce underfoot and fine marquetry stretches from door to dashboard and round again. Bright chrome ‘organ stop’ air vent controls finish the uniquely opulent Bentley feel. While all of the interior is fabulous, a mention must go to the astonishing stereo in our car. The audio obsessives at Naim have delivered truly fine piece of work. As an audio obsessive myself I’ve fiddled with many car stereos to get the fade and balance just perfect but there are no such trials with the Mulsanne. The audio menu features a setting that simply says ‘Driver Optimised’. Press it and you’re suddenly enveloped in audio perfection that

leaves you gasping. Bach’s Violin Concerto No1 was exquisite with presence and detail to make your brain sing. AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ demanded more volume and the system could definitely take it, right up until the moment where your ears start to bleed. All these luxuries are, however, merely gilding on a superb piece of engineering, a driving tour de force. Yes, you can rest in the back and sip fine Champagne from bespoke crystal glasses from the cooler cabinet between the rear seats while you enjoy a powered chair massage, but it is in the drivers’ seat that the Mulsanne shows its true character. This car wants to be driven. It’s a vehicle that can trace its DNA back to the 6 litre Blower Bentleys of the pre-war era and it wears that ancestry with pride. On my way out of London with the Mulsanne Speed a moment of magic happened. (Special cars like this have a way of making these things happen.) Just as the buildings finally started to give way to open Hertfordshire countryside, ahead of me loomed a polar white Rolls Royce Phantom inching steadily up the inside lane. Impossible to resist, I pulled alongside, holding the Speed just long enough for the driver to notice, my eyes fixed ahead on the horizon the whole time. There we were for a moment, these two venerable British marques side-by-side as they were for so many years, shackled like unruly Siamese twins way back in 1931 but now free to forge their own paths. The meeting lasted for a moment, before I engaged Speed mode, dropped my right foot and shot up the road like an Exocet. The passenger of the Rolls-Royce may have been able to engage in a passionate debate about who had the most luxurious car, but there was no doubt about which driver was having the most fun.

Into the Take a trip down Electric Avenue in theTesla P58D By Jay Boisvert

I

’ve not driven an electric car before – so wasn’t quite sure what to expect of the Tesla P58D. But I did my homework and watched reviews online about the car and its performance - so was looking forward to getting behind the wheel of this £100k rechargeable motor. As I was shown around the interior it dawned on me how far we had come in the world of motoring, it really was like I was stepping forward into the future as the technology in this car is nothing short of amazing; other than steer itself this car can pretty much do everything automatically.. From self dipping lights, a steering wheel that vibrates when you veer over the central white line to red indication lights on the dash to inform

you of cars either side of you when switching lanes on the motorway. And the technology does not just stop on pure driving aids, oh no, the car has every single gizmo going. In the centre console you will find a screen that my local cinema would be proud of, a touch screen system that allows you to completely personalise the car, from the suspension settings, to adjusting your seats, there is nothing you cant make your own. You can even go to the extent of naming the car. Knightrider eat your heart out. When it comes to the performance of the P58D all I can say is wow, there are two different driving options, either sport or insane, yes that’s right, there is an ‘insane’ driving mode and it does exactly what it says on the tin - in this mode you will reach 0-60mph in a little over

- 106 -

3 seconds meaning you can be confident that you will beat almost every car on the road, the acceleration is truly shocking and coming from an electric car makes it all the more impressive. There is obvioulsy one thing that always comes up when discussing electric cars and that is the hassle and time it takes to charge these machines, and to be fair, it’s not as simple as merely pulling up at a petrol station. But there are options, from charging at home to charging at numerous charge points around the country. The quickest way though is to juice up the batteries at a Tesla Supercharger which will give you a full charge in around an hour. and read the paper on the Ipad-size internet screen on the dash – all while saving the planet. I will be the first to admit, when told I would be test driving an electric car my heart did sink ever so slightly, as a through and through petrolhead it almost felt like I was cheating on previous supercars I’ve been fortunate enough to drive. However I have to say I was massively impressed with this car, the technology, combined with the look and speed, and most importantly, the quality of the build itself made it clear to see why Tesla is being talked about so much. I even managed to convert a few fellow petrol heads in the believing this car is the future. Rumour has it they are bringing out a new version of the insane mode, the ludicrous mode - BRING IT ON....

UK Property Header By Martin Roberts For most of us the beginning of the year spells a ‘back to the grindstone’ mindset. With our thinking turning towards starting fresh plans with renewed vigour after a period of relaxation over the Christmas period, this month I am rounding up a series of properties that offer interesting investment opportunities. From a unique Italian property that could be used for a multitude of businesses to destinations that are attracting foreign investment like the proverbial bees to honey pot. I’m often asked,‘what makes a good investment’, to which the answer isn’t straightforward, but fundamentally buyers need to pick locations where demand is strong and ideally get in before the rush. National and Government investment into an area is always a good indicator of the long-term prospects. The UK market still holds plenty of upside and here my advice is to buy at the right price - so think about off plan, auctions or forced sale situations where there’s more scope to secure a property below market value. As always do your due diligence thoroughly too - an unbelievably low price that seems too good to be true, often is just that.

UK Investment Finds The UK market has seen a real upwards trend in the last few years following a period of correction after the global financial crisis of 2007/08. There are always those predicting the imminent arrival of the next bear market, however, most property pundits still agree that there are still some very attractive opportunities for those who take the time and trouble to seek them out. It’s not all about buying run down homes and renovating them either. Follow the lead of property professionals and consider alternative ways of investing in the UK other than a visit to the local estate agent – from collective property funds and syndicates to property auctions and off plan developments; there plenty of scope to secure exciting properties with great growth potential depending on how dirty you want your hands to get.

Republic Square of Prince Mihailo

When you visit Belgrade, the Republic Square of Prince Miahilo is located in the main street and this is the meeting point for all the local people. nightlife clubs

Brankow

“Brankow” is located in one column of Branko’s bridge and is a stylistic blend of urban and avant-garde. George Goetz, designer of clubs “The Tube”, “Mladost” and “Lasta” is the architect behind this venue and the interior boasts a mixture of New York, London and Berlin style. This contrast is apparent from the moment you enter and encourages a cool, laid back vibe. A special touch is that the bar was designed by the English expert who worked on designing some of the most elite clubs in the world.

Club 100

As its name suggests, Club 100 can accommodate around 100 guests, or as they say, one hundred ‘selected’ guests. The music program changes from day to day but R&B tends to be their favourite genre. The cool atmosphere is what makes this venue so popular and they often have famous DJs visit to play a set. With an extensive cocktail and drinks list and an amazing ambience, Club 100 is the ultimate place to party.

Like other ‘’A class’’ clubs, club Drugstore Play offers impeccable service, in addition to its fantastic interior and superb design. Joe An afternoon with Fournier From Monaco to Miami, South Kensington to West Hounslow, Joe Fournier has had a kaleidoscope of influences. After swapping his successful personal training business which counted Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow amongst its clientele he’s now enjoying the nightclub life opening a string of successful clubs across a couple of continents. Here he talks to Tempus about his success.

Tell us a bit about Joe Fournier, the formative years? My dad was wealthy, he and my mum met on the French Riviera. My dad is from Monaco and was a pilot, whilst mum stayed at home. I went to a top French primary school in London Lycée Français Charles De Gaulle de Londres and then an American Community School. My parents however split up, it was a mess, we moved to Hounslow. I went from chauffeur driven car to taking the bus. These early circumstances set you on a determined path? Where we lived wasn’t the greatest spot but there was a huge passion around for basketball so I got involved, started playing, practised like hell, and became pretty good. It taught me good discipline and that practice makes perfect. Everyday I’d shoot a thousand or more hoops, this translated into a work ethic that’s stayed with me. I made

the England basketball team but was on the bench for a while. Finally I got my chance to play when someone, unfortunately for them, got injured. Has sport influenced your business life? Without question. I captained the England Basketball team, played for a national side, this gives you tremendous pride that you want to replicate in other aspects of your life. Sport gives you determination, ethics, concentration - all of these qualities demanded by business today. My personal training background also meant I met some very successful people which gives you an aspiration to succeed. I think 95% of everything I have ever done comes from the discipline of playing sport - It gives you a will to win. Do you get good advice? I know some amazing people, and get to meet more of them every day. I’d say that

directly, Paul Kelsey has offered me loads of invaluable advice, Rick De La Croix has opened loads of doors for me and been very straight talking. Dino Spencer, my boxing coach has also been an incredible influence. Do you have a daily regime? It can be pretty tricky with all the travelling to stick to one but I do train every day and if I’ve a Boxing match coming up then I’ll train twice a day and get a run in for the 8-10 weeks ahead of fight night. All this together with all the other shit I have to get done means 4-6 hours sleep is about the max I can hope to get. Do you get any downtime? There isn’t too much, but I love what I do so I’m very lucky. Chilling on a boat, super yacht or speedboat, sipping a glass of Rose sounds pretty good.
