Dear Chaverim,

The High Holy Days are upon us and I always look forward to welcoming congregants who attend High Holy Day services. As interim rabbi of Temple Israel, I know that these High Holy Days will be difficult. The death of Rabbi David Senter, whose short tenure in Portsmouth made such a lasting and loving impact, has left a gaping hole in the heart of virtually every member of Temple Israel.

The liturgy of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur speaks to us about the realities of life. It addresses questions that we often think about, questions about life and death. It is no surprise then that large numbers attend High Holy Day services in Continued on page 2

Parking Alert for the High Holidays

every community around the world. We pray to God for life and for help achieving our personal goals. But what goals are appropriate to pray for?

Temple Israel’s lower and side Court Street parking lots will be reserved for those needing extra assistance—please be considerate of these members and walk a little farther if you can!

The story is told of two boys.

One asked the other, “If you could have anything you wanted, what would you wish for?”

A “passenger drop off area” will be marked in the lower lot: Drive into the Washington Street lot entrance, drop off passengers at the flagged loading zone, and exit onto Court Street to find parking elsewhere.

“I’d wish for a sandwich because I’m hungry,” answered the second boy.

Great news: Our neighbors at Strawbery Banke have kindly provided additional free parking during the High Holidays at their Visitor Center Lot, 14 Hancock Street (approximately 45 spaces available). Cars must display a TIP parkingpermit sticker. (Contact the Temple office if you need one.) It’s a five-minute walk to TIP from Hancock and Washington Streets. We hope that the invitation to park at Strawbery Banke will become an annual offer. Help us make that happen by avoiding cutting through the Strawbery Banke ticketed area to reach the Temple. Thank you for abiding by this request!

“That’s ridiculous!” the first boy said. “I’d wish for a billion dollars. I’d also wish for my own space ship, my own continent and a fancy sports car.”

A little later the boys met again and the second boy was eating a sandwich. “I got my wish,” he said.

This story reminds us that our aspirations and dreams must remain in the realm of reality. Praying for the absurd is futile; praying for God’s help and guidance is realistic. The Talmud states (in tractate Rosh Hashanah 4b), “If you reach for things within reason, you may get them. If you seek things that are clearly beyond your abilities to achieve, you will end up with nothing.”

As we come together during these High Holy Days, let us pray prayers and dream dreams that we can achieve so long as we work together with God and utilize the skills which God has given us.

Other nearby public parking options include the (free) Parrott Avenue lot and (paid) Hanover Parking Garage at 34 Hanover Street.

If you park on Court or State Street, pay the metered rate, and get a Meter Expired ticket, please write your name on it and turn in the ticket to the Temple Office for a waiver by October 1.

Waivers will only be granted for Meter Expired tickets, so be prepared to pay and display.

Dear Fellow Congregants, Rosh Hashanah is just around the corner, and like every year this is an opportunity for us as individuals and as a community to reflect on the year that has passed, and on the year to come. But this past year was not a normal year. It was marked by extraordinary loss and remarkable change, and the year to come also promises continued changes.

Like many of you, I lost not only a rabbi but a close friend with the passing of David Senter, and not a week goes by without my thinking about him. When my daughters Maddie and Rachel read haftorah and helped to lead services in June— an idea suggested

by Rabbi Senter— his absence was palpable.

But in many respects, David Senter is an ongoing presence throughout our community. At the board meetings, we regularly consider what Rabbi Senter would have said or recommended when we face issues big and small. This was particularly true in one of the projects that was dear to Rabbi David’s heart, namely the bringing about of a closer relationship between the two synagogues on the Seacoast.

This vision of a closer community has succeeded beyond anyone’s expectations. Under the dedicated leadership of Ira Schwartz, Joanne Samuels, Ken Litvack, Cathi Cherry-Liston, and the members of the integration committees, the two congregations from Dover and Portsmouth are becoming one strong and unified community. We will be celebrating the High Holidays together as a congregation of more than 300 families. Please consider reaching out to greet people you don't already know when you see an unfamiliar face in the synagogue, as there are many new members.

The sorrow and joy of the last year are now part of our community’s memory, but we also need to continue to take care of our present and look to our future. For the past six months, Rabbi Korinow and Cantor Nafshi have led services and helped to heal our community, and both will continue doing so for the next year. At the same time, our Rabbi Search Committee, under the able leadership of Helaine

Roberts and MJ Shoer, is carrying out the essential business of identifying strong candidates to serve as our next full-time spiritual leader. I would be remiss if I did not also offer the heartfelt thanks and gratitude of the board and congregation to Heather Tomlinson, for her extraordinary work in managing the day-to-day affairs of the synagogue and keeping us on an even keel.

It is only through the dedicated efforts of our staff and volunteers that Temple Israel is in a position of strength in the present, and able to look forward to an even stronger future. But to achieve a renewed vision of who we are as a community, and what we hope to be and to achieve over the coming years, we need input from the entire community. Each of the members of the board will be calling congregants in the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah to ask you directly what you see as working today and the areas where you would like to see improvement. It is this input from the community that will provide direction for the board over the coming year and years to come.

Sisterhood The Sisterhood had a nice turnout of new and established members at the August 28 meeting.

Members introduced themselves and began discussing events and programs for the coming year. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 27, at 6:45 p.m. in the Shmoozatorium, where officers will be elected.

Brotherhood The Brotherhood will be kicking off the new year with a Sukkah-building party and breakfast on Sunday, September 16. Construction begins at 8:00 a.m., followed by a breakfast meeting at 10:00 a.m.

Happy almost fall!

September is upon us and that means that the empty classrooms and hallways of our Hebrew School will soon be coming alive as the children of our community join their teachers for a new year of learning from each other.

Our 3rd through 7th graders will be starting on Wednesday, September 5th. Kindergarten through 2nd graders will be starting on Sunday, September 16th.

New programming this year will include music with Elissa Kaplan Senter, Jewish cooking with Laura Sher, and Breakfast with the Rabbi. Visits with Noam, our Israeli shlicha, Library with Margie, and Jewish art, will, of course, continue. It will be a fun year!

Speaking of new faces, I am very excited to welcome Tammy Labonté, our new Director of the Early Learning Center. She is lovely and I am looking forward to working with her Monday through Friday mornings.

I hope that the many hours of prayer, reflection, and fasting we spend gathered as a community during these holy days will provide you with moments of sanctuary and peace, and with the inspiration to do the work of atonement and renewal that these holidays offer us as we enter a new year.

In addition to extensive children's and teen collections for those coming back to Hebrew School, we have workstations with MacBooks and spots for adult reading and study to use while the kids are in class. From Tammy’s introductory note to ELC parents: I am very excited to start this new adventure with your family and child(ren). My education in the field consists of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Special Education. I am NAMC Montessori-certified and have 20 years of experience working with young children. I live in Rochester and have two children, ages 20 and 19.

I am honored that you trust the ELC to work with you in providing a rich and stimulating Tammy Labonté school foundation! The warm home environment you provide for your child and ongoing communication with myself and Elian will ensure that your preschooler continues to grow Director, ELC into his or her own special person.

Meet Seth Wizwer, new Board Member I am Seth Wizwer and I am pleased to be serving as the Vice President of Education for the temple.

The family photo below is from my daughter Natalee’s bat mitzvah two years ago. Now she is a a madricha in the Hebrew School and my son David is in the fifth grade. I have been a teacher in the Hebrew School for the past two years and have had the pleasure of working with many of our students. I am excited about some opportunities that I hope to bring to the temple community. My hope is to engage our youth more while in Hebrew School and keep them engaged after they graduate.

My job outside of the temple is as a licensed Mental Health Counselor. I have a private practice in Portsmouth and Manchester. I specialize in child and adolescent therapy and also work with adults. I am the president-elect of the NH Mental Health Counselors Association. I believe my professional knowledge and skills will aid with my service to the temple. I look forward to serving as your Vice President of Education.
