Nisan / Iyar 5779
From the Rabbi’s Study… Dear Friends, While Passover is in the rearview mirror, it along with the celebration of the Exodus from Egypt, fall during the Hebrew month of Aviv – meaning “Spring” (now called Nisan). Passover celebrated the rebirth of the Jewish people. Beginning on the second day of Passover, Jews have traditionally counted fifty days until the next holiday – Shavuot. This is the period of Sefira, of counting. While Passover may have marked the rebirth of the Jewish people, the Jewish nation was born on Shavuot, which celebrates the Revelation at Mt. Sinai and our receiving the Torah from God. One might ask, “What is the difference?” On Passover, our ancestors gained their personal freedom from slavery; they were now free to determine their own future. On Shavuot, they received the Torah or Law, one of the two components necessary for a nation. The other component, land, was already promised to their forefathers and would, in due time, be delivered to them upon returning to their ancestral homeland. The concept of counting has a unique characteristic in Judaism. Based upon the early rabbis’ opinion that in matters of sacredness, one increases – we count up, not down. (On Chanukah we light one candle the first night, two the second, and so on up to eight, rather than beginning with eight candles on the first night as one rabbi wanted.) In our secular society, we usually “count down” rather than up. Continued on page 2
