RABBI’S MESSAGE

A Shabbat of Different Form

Come Spring, we typically have a B. Mitzvah for the Torah portion of Behar that includes the instructions of the sabbatical year. Every 7 years the land in Israel is given a chance to rest, agricultural activity is forbidden. This often leads to fascinating questions from our young adults, do our crops really need a break? While the ancient Rabbis were hardly agronomists, they appear to recognize the importance of all God’s works taking a pause from time to time. This is also why we prioritize Shabbat, we can’t just keep going and going, even God took a rest on the 7th day.

On that note, I’m grateful and humbled to be shortly taking a 3 month sabbatical. Candidly, in my 17 year career in the Rabbinate this is a first for me, and I’m intrigued by the possibilities of this period of recharge. My plans include taking a weeklong clergy course in crisis management at Northwestern University, spending a month in France connecting with the Jewish community, and lots of reading! I am eager to return at the end of August ready for the many opportunities (and challenges) that we continue to face in these difficult days.

Our leadership has ensured that we will be in good hands over my time away, in fact I’m excited for each of you! Our very own Rabbi Garten will be covering Rabbinic duties for the month of June. He’ll even be leading Pride Shabbat and reflecting on our journey of inclusion at Temple and in Canada. Our sister Rabbi Orit Rozenblit of Northern Israel will be spending the month of July in Ottawa. She’s bringing expertise in representing progressive Zionism, a specialty in

working with older members, and a love of Talmud. In August we can look forward to a weekend with Rabbi Lisa Grushcow of Montreal and Cantor David Malecki.

I recognize that my absence will leave gaps with some projects and communication, again, I’m thankful for your patience and appreciate your understanding. Before we know it, the high holidays will be here again and I’ll be ba-aack!

May coming days bring renewal and peace for one and all.

Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As is often the case, Temple has been bursting with energy and excitement all spring. We have had B Mitzvahs with friends and family, we have honoured our Life and Legacy and TI(O)F Chair Circle donors as well as our volunteers – kol ha kavod to Margot Rosen, Jim Merson and Jack Koskie for all the wonderful things you do for our Temple family! We hosted the Imre Rosenberg memorial lecture and had a full house! We partnered with JFO and hosted a showing of the important movie ‘October 8,’ to a sold-out crowd at the Carling Cineplex; and we hope to have a second showing in the fall – so watch for more information on that. We also awarded four youth scholarships to our teens! Mazal tov to Ari Wilbur, Sophie Albagli, Benjamin Cotsman and Freida Kaplan-Myrth, all of whom travelled to Israel either on March of the Living or the Temple Israel Solidarity mission – kol ha kavod to you all! Look for their articles to come in a later edition of our magazine. Lastly, our own Temple Israel Liturgical Choir gave an amazing concert on Sunday afternoon, May 25, along with the Ottawa Police Chorus. And we still have confirmation of our next cohort.

Usually, things quiet down over the summer at Temple, but not this year! We are gearing up to vacate the building at the end of June so the renovation can begin!! The Board will vote at the June Board meeting to finalize exact plans. Thanks to your generosity, and the amazing work of our Door to the Future fundraising team, led by Gary Viner and Chris Kessler, we are in very good shape to begin our Temple Israel Improvement Project (TIIP). The TIIP team is working hard, including Jim and Debbie Farrow, Bernie Applebaum, Gary Viner, Arthur Loeb, Jim Merson for security and Gary Kessler watching the budget, and Kim Doran, Diana Kaan and Louise Rachlis on communications, we are in excellent hands. Once we receive our final estimate from the construction manager, the Board

will determine what our plan will be. Ideally, we will have enough to complete the entire project, and I have full faith that we will get there!

While the building gets its make-over, our neighbours at the Hellenic Centre have graciously agreed to rent us space, so you won’t have to adjust your GPS! For the most part, services and our administrative offices will be there, as well as hopefully the Bayit backyard for outdoor services. We may take a few services on the road – like during Greekfest for example. We are still finalizing details for when that happens in August.

In other news this summer, Rabbi Mikelberg will be taking a well-deserved Sabbatical. Over the time he is away, we are so fortunate to have Rabbi Garten to cover Shabbat services for the month of June, and Rabbi Orit Rozenblit has agreed to come for the month of July! Very exciting indeed! For August, we will have a few special guests, including Cantor David Malecki, Rabbi Lisa Grushcow as well as Sue Potechin and Mark Kamins. Wishing Rabbi Mikelberg an exciting and fruitful few months away!

It was 50 years ago this spring that Rabbi Garten was ordained as a Rabbi by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). To say the world, let alone the Jewish world, has never been the same since is an understatement.

His leadership, his passion, his empathy, and his inspiring presence have guided our community for nearly half a century. We are blessed and grateful.

Renewing Ruth A

Narrative of Hesed Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell

We are the people who return to the same texts, year after year, season after season. Do we come back because we think the stories have changed? Or do we return because we know that in the months or perhaps years since we last read these narratives, we have changed, our perspectives have widened, we are asking questions we never asked before?

Sunday, June 1 7:00PM

Virtual Event

Join us as we return to Megillat Ruth, our Shavuot text, a short story that echoes many stories in today’s world. We’ll explore the rich ancient narrative of loss and connection, migration and being a stranger in a new land, risking all for hunger and protection, discovering the power of kindness/hesed in this precious, ever-renewable source-text.

Rabbi Sue Levi Elwell has been immersed in sacred stories for over 4 decades. She has served as a congregational rabbi, worked with congregations and congregational leaders through the Reform movement, taught in universities and synagogues, and written and edited works exploring Jewish women’s history and contemporary narratives. She serves as a Spiritual Director at Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, and divides her time between Tel Aviv and Philadelphia.

Temple Israel

The Biblical Ruth is our Shavuot heroine, and she reminds us of the physical and spiritual paths that we take as Jews. We’re about to take our Temple on the road as we renew our space for the future. Join us for a special Shavuot Yizkor service that will include the dedication of our new Yartzeit plaques and a blessing to mark this period of renewal moving to our temporary space in the Hellenic Centre and building for tomorrow. Just like Ruth, this journey will be one of courage and strength. We’re delighted to include the Temple Israel Liturgical Choir under the direction of Carol Gurofsky.

Rabbi Grushcow is a home grown Canadian rabbi with ties to Toronto and Montreal. She is the author of Writing the Wayward Wife, and the editor of The Sacred Encounter: Jewish Perspectives on Sexuality. She is also a contributor to The Torah: A Women's Commentary, The Mussar Torah Commentary, and other publications in print and online. Rabbi Grushcow has a long history of interfaith bridge-building. DOOR TO

TEMPLE ISRAEL

Temple Israel’s building has served us well for almost 50 years, and now it’s time for a refresh! Updates to improve accessibility, security and aesthetics will ensure that our building can best serve the needs of our current membership and next generations.

Building Renewal

Temple Israel Synagogue, our well-loved spiritual home, is nearly 50 years old. Built for 100 families, it now is the gathering place, the school, the celebration space and the locus of prayer and ceremonies for more than 300 families.

With a list of improvements that were deemed necessary by the congregation, Figure Architects Collective was engaged to redesign plans for the new renovation.

With a focus on accessibility and security, Temple Israel will have a new entrance, an elevator between floors, a second universal washroom on the main floor, an accessible bimah with a shallow ramp. There will also be flexible meeting space, an improved layout of the staff offices, integrated audio-visual capability and necessary security improvements for all of us. We look forward to an accessible and more welcoming Temple Israel in the very near future, a Temple that we can all build together.

Following an overwhelmingly positive vote on March 6, 2025 to go forward, our renovation is beginning. Our offices and services will be moving in to the Hellenic Centre next door mid- June for the next 10 months. Our amazing programs will continue as usual!

L’DOR V’DOR

As a community, Temple members embrace many meaningful ways to strengthen and sustain Jewish life—whether by offering their time and talents in service, or by supporting Temple initiatives through heartfelt gifts, including card donations, capital campaign contributions, and legacy giving through the Temple Israel of Ottawa Foundation and the Life & Legacy program.

On May 10th, Temple held its 5th annual Chai Legacy Circle Shabbat—a special Shabbat morning dedicated to honoring and thanking our legacy donors. Their generous gifts and endowments help ensure the strength and vitality of Temple Israel now and for generations to come.

Long time Temple member and past president Linda Rossman, with daughters and granddaughters by her side, spoke to the congregation about L’Dor v’dor: Generational Community and Values.

“Shabbat Shalom, everyone. Esther, Lisa, Harper, Maya, and I are deeply honored to stand here together today for this Chai Legacy Circle Shabbat. And let’s be honest— what better way to talk about community and continuity than as a family team?

For us, Temple has always been more than just a building. It’s where we celebrate milestones, grieve losses, sing loudly, ask big questions, and find comfort in familiar faces and ancient traditions. It’s not just where we show up—it’s where we belong. It gives us grounding. Purpose. Connection. And that means the world to me.

Now, speaking of long-standing synagogue connections... Yes, my grandparents were founding members of Adath Israel—the Roumanische Shul—in Toronto a century ago.

Yes, my parents were life-long members of Holy Blossom Temple. And yes, I’ve

proudly been a member here for about 45 years. That’s a lot of history. But when I see the little ones running around—with challah in their hands and enough energy to power the building —I’m not thinking about the past. I’m thinking about the future. Their future includes Hebrew school, services, and plenty of cookies at kiddush. But more than that, it includes growing up in a Jewish “home” that stretches beyond our four walls. A place rooted in kindness, learning, joy, and showing up for each other. I want them to grow up with that same deep sense of belonging. To feel the pulse of this community in their own lives. Not just to inherit a synagogue—but to inherit a reason to love it.

Just weeks after the twins were born, Lisa organized a baby-naming ceremony at our home. It was a beautiful gathering—small guest list, great Grandma Flo (my late mom) from Toronto, the twins’ beloved Auntie Esther helping with the prayers, a lovely lunch. When I asked Lisa who would officiate, I assumed it would be one of the many Jewish professionals Lisa has worked with over the years. But no—she had someone else in mind. Someone we didn’t know very well at the time. She said: “Mom, Rabbi Mikelberg is going to be the kids’ rabbi for many years. He’s the one.”

The twins have been coming to Tot Shabbat since they were just a few months old. And yes, it’s made an impression—these days, almost 3 years later, they walk in the door and immediately say one word: “Challah.” They’ve got their priorities straight.

Today, as we mark this special legacy donor Shabbat, we’re not just talking about financial planning or long-term giving. We’re talking about planting roots. About making sure this sacred space stays strong, welcoming, and full of life—for our children, for theirs and for all who walk through Temples door.

I’m grateful to be part of this vision with all of you. May we continue to raise the next generation here at Temple, rich with love, tradition, and community. L’dor v’dor.

Shabbat Shalom.

Temple Israel is Ottawa’s Reform congregation where Jewish Life Happens -- committing ourselves to Kehilah K’lal Yisrael, and Tikun Olam.

We are a dynamic and welcoming congregation (Kehilah) where varied Jewish experiences offer pathways to learn and to experience G-d for all, respecting tradition and creating new celebrations.

We are an active liberal presence in the larger Jewish community (K’lal Yisrael).

We strive through social action to fulfill the Mitzvot of caring for others (Gimilut Chasadim) and repairing the world (Tikun Olam).
