Adar - Sivan 5785
Sometimes in gest people reflect to me that my tenure at Temple has been marked by chaos at large. In particular, we all got to know COVID-19 shortly after I arrived (no I didn’t bring it!). The last 18 months have been marred by the war in the Middle East. To turn on the news any day over the last 5+ years is to witness anything but quiet. I imagine I’m not the only one who is coming to the conclusion that to anticipate global forces to be calm and orderly is to be disappointed, rather it’s better to fine tune our skills to expect the unexpected and respond in stride.
I’ve been heartened to hear from many of you that Temple has provided solace in these dynamic days. For our children, they know that they can express their true beings within our walls, they will be embraced and loved. For our worshippers, they can leave behind the challenges at large and surround themselves in sacred space. For our social action trailblazers, they can get in touch with their Jewish values and use them to advocate for a better world. For our friends feeling alone in these troubled days, Temple is a place to be with family and cherish all that we share. Thank goodness for our Temple home.
In many ways, these coming weeks and months will be about blossoming for tomorrow. Purim and Passover are upon us, both festivals speak to the theme of nurturing our Jewish identity and ensuring we’re free and proud. Start practicing your Beatles singing for our Purim celebration! We’re making progress on the building front, I’m optimistic that we will shortly be breaking ground and
ensuring our facility is inclusive and safe. Thank you to one and all for your patience and generosity! And on the Israel front, I pray that the worst is behind us and that in coming days the rest of our beloved dear one’s will return home and that all civilians will be safe and supported. By the time you read this, I will have returned from a solidarity mission with a Temple delegation of 23 and we’ll be eager to share our firsthand reflections.
I cannot promise that days ahead will be relaxed, but I can assure you that our beautiful Temple is here to provide comfort, company and inspiration. I’m grateful for each of you and your strength, courage and care.
B’Shalom, Rabbi Daniel Mikelberg
The Temple Israel Improvement Project: Charting a Path Forward
It’s here: the Temple community vote March 6th to approve full steam ahead for the building construction!
The Temple Israel Improvement Project (TIIP) committee has been active on numerous fronts, in the lead-up to the vote: securing detailed cost estimates; working with Figurr Architects to refine the designs; submitting the paperwork for planning and construction approvals; and making plans to relocate synagogue services and other activities during construction.
We have launched the community information sessions and were pleased that more than 50 people participated in the first event – to see the renovation designs, learn more about the project and ask questions. We encourage everyone to attend a session so that the entire Temple family is informed as we all prepare to vote on the project plans and renewed fundraising campaign.
The Fundraising Campaign – called “Door to the Future” – has already generated $4.9M in pledges. Thanks to your generosity, we are confident that we will meet the fundraising goal.
The renovated building, which will be our religious home for decades to come, will reflect our Temple’s values of accessibility, inclusivity and community – and will also meet our new
Plans include a small addition to the south side of our building, an elevator; a ramp to the Bima; a fully accessible main floor washroom; a community room, and much more!
security requirements. This is an exciting and necessary journey. As Temple community members, all of us, we need to give our financial support; we need to lend our expertise; and we need to share our enthusiasm!
If you have any questions about the project, please contact: Miriam Burke, President.
Dear Temple Israel Community,
As we are in the depths of a cold winter, we are filled with excitement and gratitude for everything we have accomplished together at TiRS. This year has already been one of incredible growth, renewed energy, and meaningful Jewish learning. It has been inspiring to see our students thrive, our teachers innovate, and our families deepen their connection to Jewish life. And the best part? We’re just getting started.
At TiRS, our mission is clear: to create a center of Jewish joy, pride, learning, and community. Every week, when our students enter the building, they are stepping into a space where Jewish identity is nurtured, where friendships are strengthened, and where the beauty and depth of our traditions come to life in lasting and impactful ways. Watching our students engage— whether through interactive classroom discussions, hands-on holiday programming, or immersive off-site experiences—reminds us why this work is so important.
A Thriving and Growing Community: One of the most exciting developments this year has been our continued growth. Our enrollment numbers are climbing, reflecting the enthusiasm and commitment of our families. This growth isn’t just about numbers—it’s about the energy and passion that fills our school each week. It’s about students who can’t wait to be here, about families who feel more connected than ever, and about a Jewish learning experience that is relevant, meaningful, and inspiring.
We are building something truly special, and the energy within our school is contagious. It is a joy to see students not only learning about their Jewish identity but living it—through meaningful discussions, engaging activities, and community celebrations that bring us all together.
Our Educators: The Heart of Our School: None of this would be possible without our exceptional team of teachers and teaching assistants (TAs). Their dedication, creativity, and passion for Jewish education continue to be the driving force behind our success. Each week, they bring Jewish learning to life in new and innovative ways, creating an environment where
students feel inspired, challenged, and supported.
We are especially proud of the growth and leadership of our TAs, particularly our newly appointed senior TAs, who have stepped up in incredible ways. Their presence and contributions continue to elevate the experience for our students, and their leadership serves as an example of how TiRS is not just educating young learners but actively shaping the Jewish leaders of tomorrow.
Investing in our educators is a top priority, and we are committed to providing them with ongoing opportunities for growth, professional development, and mentorship. Their impact extends far beyond the classroom, and we are grateful for their continued dedication to making TiRS the best it can be.
Innovative Programming and Off-Site Experiences: This year, we have been intentional about ensuring that Jewish learning extends far beyond the classroom. Our commitment to experiential education has led to a wide range of creative and engaging programs that bring Jewish learning to life in new and exciting ways. From interactive holiday celebrations to immersive storytelling and hands-on projects, we are constantly finding ways to make Jewish education not just informative, but truly transformational.
A highlight of our year has been our off-site trips, which provide students with opportunities to experience Judaism in action. Whether it’s exploring Jewish history and culture, participating in meaningful community service projects, or strengthening bonds within the Jewish community, these experiences deepen our students’ connection to their identity and tradition.
Looking Ahead with Enthusiasm: As we look forward, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to each and every one of you—our students, parents, teachers, TAs, and community members. Your dedication, support, and enthusiasm make TiRS the vibrant and inspiring place that it is. It is because of you that we continue to grow, evolve, and thrive.
We are so excited for everything that is still to come in 2025, and we can’t wait to continue this journey together. Thank you for being a part of this incredible community—we are honored to lead this school and work alongside all of you.
With gratitude and excitement, Ranit & Dovi

ANNIVERSARY AS A RABBI!
It was 50 years ago this spring that Rabbi Garten was ordained as a Rabbi by the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR). To say the world, let alone the Jewish world, has never been the same since is an understatement. His leadership, his passion, his empathy, and his inspiring presence have guided our community for nearly half a century. We are blessed and grateful.
In honour of this truly historic occasion, Temple Israel will be holding a special Shabbat to celebrate our beloved Rabbi Emeritus!

In October 2024, I had the opportunity to attend a North American-wide conference for Jewish teens in Atlanta, Georgia called The Collab. The Collab is a yearly event organized by URJ-NFTY (National Federation for Temple Youth), of which our temple youth group, FROSTY, is a part. The Collab is an opportunity for teens from all regions of NFTY across the continent to come together and learn more about what it means to be a reform Jewish teen. I was invited to go as a current fellow of the Teen Israel Organizing Fellowship, which is focused on organizing positive discussion and raising awareness of issues surrounding Israel. As co-president of FROSTY and the only Canadian at the event, I was able to represent our region, and provide a unique perspective.
I am grateful to the Temple Scholarship Committee for granting me the Youth Scholarship to help cover travel expenses to attend the event. The mission of the Youth Scholarship is “to encourage the development of Leadership skills, and to promote a strong connection to the Reform movement and Israel”. This matched perfectly with the opportunity presented to me in attending the Collab.
To get to Atlanta, I had to take two flights, stopping in Chicago along the way. After landing in Chicago, before boarding my final flight to Atlanta, I met some teens that I immediately suspected were heading to the Collab as well. We ended up talking and those became the people I hung out with most throughout the entire weekend. I still keep in touch with them to this day.
The Collab took place at Camp Coleman, a URJ camp an hour outside of Atlanta. I stayed in a cabin with 12 other girls and all of our meals were together with everyone in the dining hall. It was very reminiscent of my summers at Camp George.
As a member of the Teen Israel Organizing Fellowship, we would have our own activities. These related to the lessons we would use in our final fellowship projects, such as one called “hugging and wrestling with Israel”. In this activity, we were asked to discuss conflicts within Israel and to share our opinions. We talked about how we can have a love (hugging) for this country and agree with much of what it stands for, while still disagreeing with some of its policies (wrestling).
There were also activities done as a larger group. These included shabbat services and “Big Fun”, which entailed a silent disco with the theme of “Grease, Greece or Ancient Greece”.
Overall, I had a great experience and I made connections that will last a lifetime. I am grateful for Temple’s contribution that allowed me to go to such an impactful event. This has become one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
Thank you again for granting me the scholarship, Ava
In the heart of Canada, the movement for Reform Judaism is gaining momentum. We have a unique opportunity to make our voices heard at the upcoming World Zionist Conference.
But to ensure our community is well represented, we need to come together. The key is membership with ARZACanada, the organization that represents Canadian Reform Judaism at the Congress. The number of memberships will determine our representation and voting power at the Congress. It's a simple way to make a significant difference.
For just $18 for adults and $5 for students, we can all contribute to this vital cause. If you haven't already, please visit arzacanada.org and become a member today. Together, we can ensure that Canadian Reform Judaism is represented with strength and unity. Your membership matters.

Temple Israel is Ottawa’s Reform congregation where Jewish Life Happens -- committing ourselves to Kehilah K’lal Yisrael, and Tikun Olam.
We are a dynamic and welcoming congregation (Kehilah) where varied Jewish experiences offer pathways to learn and to experience G-d for all, respecting tradition and creating new celebrations.
We are an active liberal presence in the larger Jewish community (K’lal Yisrael).
We strive through social action to fulfill the Mitzvot of caring for others (Gimilut Chasadim) and repairing the world (Tikun Olam). 1301
