We are in the midst of “Sefirat Ha-Omer”, during which we mark the time between Passover and Shavuot by counting 7 cycles of 7 days each. In fact, the name of the holiday “Shavuot” means “Weeks”, denoting the 7 weeks leading up to the festival upon which we celebrate our ancestors’ receiving the gift of Torah at Mount Sinai.

The number 7 is a number that signifies completion. In Judaism, this number figures prominently in other contexts as well. For example, Shabbat is the 7th day of the week. On Shabbat morning, there are 7 aliyot to the Torah. The Shemitah, or Sabbatical Year, takes place once every 7 years in Israel. In biblical times, the Yovel, or Jubilee Year, took place after 7 cycles of 7 years each. At traditional Jewish weddings, the bride circles the groom 7 times.

An egalitarian twist on this tradition is for the bride and groom to take turns circling each other, for a total of 7 times. Also at Jewish weddings, 7 blessings known as the “Sheva Brachot” are recited under the chuppah. These 7 blessings are recited again after Birkat Ha-Mazon at the wedding feast and after each of the 7 meals that are eaten during the 7 days following the wedding.

Seven is a significant number at other lifecycle events as well. At a Jewish funeral, the procession of the casket to the grave is halted 7 times during the recitation of Psalm 91. There are 7 days of mourning known as “shiva” beginning on the day of the burial. The word “shiva” itself means “seven”. During these 7 days, Jewish law directs mourners to take off from work and to stay at home and say Mourners’ Kaddish with a minyan.

In keeping with the Jewish tradition of ending stories, books of the Torah, and Torah and Haftarah readings on a positive note, I would like to take this opportunity to shift from talking about death to talking about the beginning of the spiritual life of our people on the holiday of Shavuot, which takes place exactly 7 weeks after Passover. This year, Shavuot begins on Tuesday night, May 30. Before the holiday begins, we will have a dairy dinner at 6:00 PM for families with children and adults of all ages, featuring blintzes soufflé and mac & cheese. We will have an abbreviated version of our annual Tikkun Leyl Shavuot study sessions with cheesecake from 8:00 PM-Midnight, including Yom Tov Maariv. The Shavuot holiday continues on Wednesday, May 31 and Thursday, June 1. I hope to see you in shul as we celebrate our ancestors’ receiving the Ten Commandments by studying Torah, reading the Book of Ruth, and noshing on dairy delicacies!

By Janet Kaplan & Hester Skolnik Special Occasion Clothing Drive for Rescue Mission of Trenton – on Sunday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. we will be collecting formal/special occasion clothing for donation to the RMT thrift shop where it will be sold for very little money to people who truly appreciate it, which helps support both the RMT and the community. There are many people who cannot afford a beautiful wedding dress or special occasion dress or suit, and here is your once-in-a-blue-moon opportunity to do a mitzvah while making more room in your closet! We accept all sizes, current and vintage clothing, and accessories.

In addition, we will collect men’s and women’s suits, handbags, pocketbooks, backpacks, women’s bras in good condition, and of course, outgrown or no longer needed shoes, boots, and sneakers. We will also have a drop-box at Snap Fitness (thank you again, Brian Lillianthal!), 318 Lloyd Road, Aberdeen (next to ShopRite) for a few weeks prior to May 21. Please spread the word to your friends, family and co-workers.

Community Garden: May will be a very busy month for our vegetable garden. We planted a few varieties of lettuce, kale and Swiss chard in April and they will be ready to harvest before we plant our other vegetables. We have a small group of hardworking and dedicated gardeners, headed by Gila Rosenblatt and Irma Philmus, who use their many years of gardening experience to direct the rest of us. If you would like to join us in this very satisfying project, we would welcome you with open arms.

You don’t need any prior knowledge of gardening. We plant a large variety of hearty vegetables and herbs which are donated to the community food pantry located at the Matawan United Methodist Church. We can always use help with planting and upkeep and you do not have to commit for any length of time.

Teens needing community service hours are welcome. This is a cooperative venture with Temple Shalom, and the garden is located next to Temple Shalom, 5 Ayrmont Lane (walking distance from TBA). Please contact Janet Kaplan (732-910-4416 or janetk222@gmail.com) with questions and to join our group.

Food Pantry: We have a designated receptacle in the synagogue lobby to deposit food and paper goods for our community food pantry located in the Matawan United Methodist Church, 478 Atlantic Avenue (corner of Church Street). The items are transported to the food pantry on a regular basis (thank you, Gloria Tepper!). If you have a large amount or an extra frozen turkey, please call the church office 732-566-2996 and arrange to drop it off on a Sunday morning or Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 12 noon, when the church office is open (call first to make sure). They are currently in need of the following items: Boxed cereal, jelly, peanut butter, canned soup, tuna fish, macaroni and cheese, fruit, pasta, spaghetti sauce, and canned prepared meals. Also, the reusable canvas bags sold by the supermarkets for $1 are appreciated by the clients.

PRESCHOOL PATTER

by Amy Naphtali Passover kept us very busy at TBA Preschool the end of March into the beginning of April. We began our Passover prep with our annual Matzah Factory. We first examined bread and matzah, comparing how they are the same and different. Next the children watched as I mixed the dough, then they each rolled out and poked holes into their own piece. As it baked in the oven the children listened to the story Mouse in the Matzah Factory, showing them that our matzah was prepared the same way it is done in the factory! After this, each of the classes began their preparations for our preschool seders – listening to the story, singing songs and making the ritual items we needed. The 2’s made beautiful matzah covers, the 3’s made useful matzah plates and the 4’s made gorgeous seder plates. All of these items were made with a lot of love and will hopefully be used for many years to come! In addition, each of the children made their own place mats, afikomen bags and Haggadot. It is wonderful watching the children take such care while creating these items and the pride they have as they are used at their families’ seders. Our seder was incredible, with the children singing the songs along with our preschool Haggadah and then sharing the foods the classes prepared for our meal. Thank you to Marla Edlin and Erin Klein for helping Miss Jen set up for two separate seders. Since our preschool seder was a week before Pesach, the following week we had time for our Exodus Experience. This is an amazing way to sum up all the learning we’ve done the past 3 weeks. The staff and children act out the whole story of Passover. Our guest Pharaoh this year was Mark Leveene, aka Baker Mark. The children were so happy it was a familiar person playing the mean and scary Pharaoh, and Mark had a wonderful time as well! Miss Jen played the princess who finds Moses in the Nile, and my teachers Miss Kelly and Miss Pilar played Moses (we do the whole experience 2 times).

Mean Pharaoh made the slaves (students) work hard in our playground, then Moses left as we followed and encountered a burning bush. After God commanded Moses to return to Egypt to speak with Pharaoh, we all followed him and told Pharaoh to “let my people go!” When Pharaoh refused, we threw plagues (plastic bugs and frogs) at him. When the most horrible plague was released (sneezing on Pharaoh to give him a cold – ok, we take a little creative liberty at this part) we quickly left Egypt, balancing matzah on our backs, until we came to the Red Sea. Moses tapped his staff on the ground and the sea miraculously parted. We then crossed over to the land of milk and honey, dancing with tambourines and enjoying our freedom with apples and honey. When you do something for many years it becomes routine and you lose sight of its significance. This happened to me until my new staff came to me the next day to tell me how wonderful and meaningful this experience was for them and the children. I guess it’s a little like our real seders - each year we need to add a new element into our routine to make it fresher and more thought provoking. I hope everyone had a wonderful and meaningful Pesach.

After spring break the classes had time to examine some new subjects. Each class spent some time learning about Earth Day and taking care of the one planet we have been gifted. Miss

Judy’s Terrific Two’s opened a “Flower Shop” and learned about the tools needed for gardening. They also planted lima beans and carrot tops. Hopefully if that grows well we can add them to our garden. Back in February each of the classes planted tomato seeds in pots in the classrooms and they are growing beautifully. Soon we will plant them outside as well. Thank you to Miss Pilar for helping us with our gardening. Also, a big thank you to her whole family, husband Jeff, children Ethan and Nicole and doggie Poncho for coming and laying down new mulch into our garden area. If you remember, Ethan and his Boy Scout Troop built our garden for Ethan’s Eagle Scout project a few years ago. We still love it! Back to our students our 3 year old classes learned about Bees in addition to earth day and planting, and wrapped up their Community Helper unit.

Our Kinderprep class completed the letters Qq and Jj plus began their preparations for their “trip” to Israel.

Our school year is quickly coming to a close and Miss Jennie is busy preparing for our wonderful Summer Camp, designed for children ages 2 to 5, keeping them happy, safe and busy 3 to 4 days a week. Preschool’s Exodus Experience!

Junior Congregation May, 2017

by Risa Doris All children of Religious School age are invited to attend Junior Congregation services, which are held on the first and third Saturdays of each month, at 10:30 am in the Library.

There they have the opportunity to conduct their own service.

They can practice, with guidance, the Shabbat prayers they have learned in Religious School, as well as learn ones they have not yet been taught. They grow comfortable with the melodies in the service, take turns leading the different prayers, including the Torah service, and develop confidence in their ability to lead the congregation. This clearly enhances their confidence and ability when they stand in front of the congregation as they become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Each service also includes a story for the children’s additional enjoyment. After the conclusion of services, if time allows, we play informal games.

Please encourage your child to participate. She/he will not only gain valuable experience, but will better understand the service, and hopefully enjoy participating in a service specifically geared for children. Awards will be given at the end of the year for regular attendance.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

by Ann Gabel, Principal This past month we began reading the book of VA -YIKRA (Leviticus) in the Torah. In the center of the Book is the Holiness Code – “You shall be Holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.” I have been discussing with the children the theme of this pinnacle third book of the Torah. The book focuses on the connection between ritual and ethics. They must go hand in hand – the two together are the definition of Holiness. The way Judaism fuses ritual and ethics into a singular form is with the MITZVAH. By performing Mitzvot we shift our thoughts away from our own needs and focus to create a community of shared values and high standards. This year, as every year, the teachers and I try to teach this central concept to the children.

• Our K/ P 1 class curriculum consisted of learning about Shabbat and the Shabbat rituals to help fulfill the Mitzvah “…. You must observe the Shabbat as a day of rest.” Leviticus (19:3) - they baked challah with their parents.

• Aleph class has learned to read Hebrew this year, as they will demonstrate at the Kabalat Ha Siddur Program on May 7. Thank you to the Sisterhood for donating the siddurim to the Aleph Class children.

• The Gimel class visited The Kosher Experience at Shoprite to learn about Kashrut and learn to fulfill the Mitzvah “I have given you these laws so that you can tell the difference between the unclean and clean animals, and between the animals that you may eat and those you must not eat.” Leviticus (11:47).

• The Hey class has been studying about the Holocaust.

They watched movies such as Swing Kids to help them understand how the Holocaust came about. On April 23, the Hey class visited the Jewish Heritage Museum in Battery Park Plaza, Manhattan. There they saw artifacts and items that were part of the remains of the Holocaust. We would like to thank Alice Grun and the Charles Grun Zachor Fund for sponsoring this very educational trip.

• The Aleph through Hey classes visited the Regency Park Nursing Home this year to fulfill the Mitzvah ….”You shall rise up before the aged and show respect to the elderly….” Leviticus (19:32).

• All the Classes donated food to the Jewish Family and Children Services for Thanksgiving and Passover to fulfill the Mitzvah….”Leave some of the wheat at the edges of your field….Leave it for the poor and stranger who live in your midst.” Leviticus (19:910) We were able to feed 10 + families for the PassPage 6

• All the children did an excellent job receiving “Caught doing a Mitzvah” certificate!!! These certificates are given to children who do unselfish acts without wanting any recognition.

• The Hey class did an exceptional job in leading prayers during Shabbat Services this Year. We also had many Aleph, Bet, Gimel, Dalet and post Graduates leading many prayers this year. I am so proud of all who lead prayers!!!!!

• The Hey class Religious School Graduation will be conducted on Wednesday evening, May 17.

• The last day of school for K-Dalet is May 21.

• You should have received your registration forms for next year. Please fill them out and send them back to the Temple by June 15. I need to know how any children will be in each class in order to make up the schedule for next year, order books, and hire new teachers if necessary. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Hello TBA! We hope you had a Pesach Sameach with delicious Matzah, friends, and family. We had an incredible month of April! On April 23, we had a picnic at Holmdel Park where we ate snacks, flew kites, socialized, and played games. Next, during the last week of April, we had an amazing time at Spring Convention at the beautiful Westin Hotel in Princeton, NJ. AUSY’s very own Sarah Safer was one of two USYers who planned the convention, while AUSY’s Sarah Schornstein ran for Regional Executive Board for Hagalil and made us all proud.

On May 7, AUSY is hosting Israel & SATO Cupcake Wars, and a Candidate’s Meeting to learn more about running for the next year’s board. Bring money for fun toppings to make delicious cupcakes and to donate money to SATO! Anyone interested in running for the AUSY board for the upcoming year should speak to our President Maya Kurzman or our Advisor Erin Kaplan to find out more about the board. Candidates should save the date for the Candidates Meeting (May 7). On May 21, we will elect a new AUSY board. On May 25, we will have an Installation Dinner for the new AUSY board while saying a farewell to our graduating seniors.

Alexis Zuckerman will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on May 13. Alexis is a 7th grade student at Satz School in Holmdel.

Outside of school, she takes classes in Tap dance and Musical Theatre, and also enjoys playing softball and basketball.

For her Bat Mitzvah project, Alexis is selling handmade slime to raise money for Children’s Specialized Hospital in Toms River.

Mazel Tov to her parents Daniel and Allison, brother Max, as well as Grandma Adrienne Zoble in Colorado and the Carle family in New Hampshire.

*************** Jonah Chalnick will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on May 20. Jonah is a 7th grade student at Eisenhower Middle School in Freehold Township. He is involved in the band, playing drums, saxophone, and trumpet, and was asked to write an arrangement of one of the songs for a small group of the band members. He also enjoys performing in his school’s shows, in addition to performing with his family at assisted living facilities.

Jonah also enjoys listening to Jazz music, skateboarding, and hopes to be a music producer one day.

Mazel Tov to his parents, Sheri and Randy, his sister and brother, Alexa and Zachary, his grandparents Sandy and David Schnee, Shelly and Bonnie Zucker, and Toby and Murry Chalnick. They are all very proud of him.

Our Beth Ahm Business Network is still going strong. We had a great meeting on April 19th and our next meeting is at TBA on May 10th at 7am. We are a new networking group for local Jewish business leaders, professionals and entrepreneurs looking to meet other likeminded individuals during a monthly breakfast meeting.

Well I certainly hope that April showers will bring May flowers……..and if not we need to buy them, well, at least for Mother’s Day or for someone who is like a mom, but not necessarily yours. Flowers say you care. We buy them for weddings, for funerals, for Mother’s Day and birthdays. We buy them to cheer someone up. They may not last long, but it’s the thought that counts.

At this point I would like to send virtual flowers to Bonnie Farin, Vicki Cohen, Barbara Leveene, Esta Ellis, Sindy Manas, Amy Naphtali, Raellen Mandelbaum, Karen Pollock, Anne Schuman, Ruth Lipman and the entire Sisterhood Board for all the hard work they have done this year.

These women and many others have given their time and ideas to make our Sisterhood events and programs a success. Kudos to all of you. May you all take the time to “smell the roses”.

You too can join us in creating a Sisterhood that brings women of all ages together, a strong group of women who rely on each other to get things done. As someone said, “It takes a village”, or at least a Sisterhood, to be one of the strong arms of our synagogue. Call Bonnie or me, join us next year, and be part of this great group to have fun, raise money and be proud of ourselves as unique as we all are.

As Admiral William H. McRaven (U.S. Navy Retired) said in his new book, Make Your Bed, “None of us are immune from life’s tragic moments. Israel Awareness

by Allison Friedman I am writing this on the train returning from my first AIPAC conference, because I wanted my emotions and thoughts to be fresh in my mind as I wrote. The experience was amazing. I highly recommend everyone go. For me, it was not just to learn about the issues that directly affect Israel, it's the realization that as American Jews we are part of something bigger. To witness all types of people, all types of religious beliefs and backgrounds and cultures, coming together for one common cause - to support a democratic country that aids anyone in need, regardless of background or beliefs or safety to self. A country that creates technology to better the world, technology that is shared with the world.

One of my takeaways is that if you focus on your purpose you can work with anyone, a lesson I intend to apply more often in my life, and teach my children. My other takeaway was that I felt my voice could make a difference. Being a member of the Matawan Aberdeen Board of Education, I am not a stranger to community service or community representation, however, this felt different. The connection was spiritual as well as logical. I left feeling my voice was heard - that it was important, that I felt needed and wanted. Often things in Washington leave you with a sense of hopelessness, but not this time. I left with hope and purpose. I hope to do further work with AIPAC because I believe I will be a better person for it and help preserve and secure something so precious, the Jewish State of Israel.

I strongly recommend that if you are interested but on the fence, you attend AIPAC.
