I

t has been a little over three years that we have published our TEENVIEW magazine in the Wichita and surrounding areas. Yet, I am not sure many of you know exactly what this publication means, and I think it is important that you do.

HOPELESSNESS Some years ago, as I tried to empower a group of young people at the local Boys and Girls Club, I noticed that I was starting to become ineffective. I regrouped and began to offer up some of my best presentations that would inspire a nation; yet, these few students were not moved. After a while, I stopped with the presentation (feeling a bit insecure in my ability to teach) and flat out asked the students, “What’s going on?”. They responded, “Mr. Murphy, we like you and appreciate what you are doing. We just don’t believe that what you are saying is possible for us.”

I’ll never forget that day. In fact, I thought about it for a long time. These kids “are” hopeless.

There is nothing I can say that can move them from this state. Hopelessness eats away at your will, conceals your dreams and smothers your passion... For the young, it steals the possibilities of the future. I knew that my purpose in “Nourishing My Brother” would be fulfilled in restoring hope to a hopeless generation.

So after some thought and a great deal of prayer, it occurred to me that if the students could somehow touch their dream, then they would see it possible to obtain. Our youth needed to realize that their lives are significant, and that their views matter… and so was “birthed,” The TEENVIEW Magazine! Producing a magazine would allow them to meet people, attend events, research careers and experience opportunities that they could, otherwise, only dream. They could write about them for their peers to also learn from their experiences. It was a great idea! The students had a sense of restored hope as we worked to make this project happen. The only challenge was that I didn’t know how to produce a magazine by myself. It was no surprise that it took us a whole year to get the first one out, and then, another year for the second one.

GIFTS WITHIN After a while and with little community support, we shelved the TEENVIEW project. We worked to put on events to try and raise money which turned out to be a BIG Fail! For those of you who may remember, Unity Ball/ Day 26 in 2009! Time went on and some of the original TEENVIEW Members said that we should “bring the magazine back.” It was 2012 when we partnered with MindFire Academy to do a summer program. We took about 10 kids and trained them to use Mac computers, taught them Illustrator and Photo Shop. None of the students had ever worked with computers on this level. They helped design the first magazine in September 2012. In November, we produced another magazine. We decided to produce a monthly magazine in January of 2013.

The students are trained to not only write the articles, but, they even work on the layout, take pictures, work the website and even produce a TV show. We remind them that they have the “Gifts Within” to accomplish whatever their heart’s desire.

Every year, students “graduate out” and new ones come in. We have clubs in surrounding schools and reach about 103 students in our network directly. Some students have gone on to receive big college scholarships, better jobs and unique opportunities because of their involvement with TEENVIEW Magazine.

It is my goal to increase our effectiveness and reach students from Junior High through college. I hope to give them stronger skills in media arts, financial literacy, business etiquette (“soft skills”) and career development.

The TEENVIEW Magazine is a publication designed “for teens, by teens, from a teen’s point of view”. It offers a platform for teens to connect with other teens on issues that are relevant to them. Teens are also able to gain “real-world” experience as they report on various topics and assist with the design and lay-out.

Participants learn various computer programs, photography, general to creative writing and many other skills as a result of their involvement with the TEENVIEW Initiative. Moreover, participants are afforded great opportunities, such as meeting and interacting with influential people. TEENVIEW Magazine is a sub-program of the Youth Educational Empowerment Program (YEEP), a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that specializes in teaching financial education to youth, ages birth to 24 years, with a special emphasis in low-income communities.

Assaulting women is one thing, saying it’s their fault is another. There’s been many cases where women have been assaulted but there are some where they’ve been told it’s their fault. A study has shown that 1 in 5 women say that it’s the woman’s fault for their assault.

Amnesty International UK director Kate Allen said that “It is shocking that so many people will lay the blame for being raped at the feet of women themselves and the government must launch a new drive to counteract this sexist ‘blame culture’.” (daily mail) One reason people blame a victim is to distance themselves from an unpleasant occurrence and thereby confirm their own invulnerability to the risk. I did a survey on who believes it was the women’s fault or not. The majority said it was not their fault, but there was a couple saying it depends.

The actual definition of Rape is “the crime, typically committed by a man, of forcing another person to have sexual intercourse with the offender against their will” meaning that if a woman says no but they’re still forced then that is rape. A 24-year-old typist was working at the state prison at Rockview in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, when she was attacked in 2013. She was choked unconscious and raped for 27 minutes by a prisoner Omar Best, who had been convicted three times previously of sex-related crimes, and then been transferred from a different state prison for assaulting a female assistant there. Even though Best was convicted of the rape in May and a review of the prison found multiple failings and led to the superintendent’s removal, a senior deputy attorney general wrote that the woman “acted in a way which in whole or in part contributed to the events” in his response to her lawsuit. There are many stories about a female being a victim of incrimination.

The rationale is if women tell themselves other women are to blame for rape, then it cannot happen to them. That is untrue, rape can happen to anyone at anytime, so saying it is the woman’s fault for being raped does not save you from it.

So the real question is, Why do women turn against women when they’re in their most vulnerable state of mind?

She just announced her first perfume, released her first album, and even directed her own music videos. Who else could I be talking about other than Melanie Martinez.

Melanie Martinez is like a pop star stuck it the world of Tim Burton and Dr. Seuss: The 21-year-old singer-songwriter wears over-sized hair bows and Cruella De Vil inspired hair, and she sometimes paints teardrops on her cheeks. But there’s a Deeper meaning behind her baby doll looks. Her music tells Stories of low self-esteem, depression, and family dysfunction through the Crybaby’s point of view. In Melanie’s debut 2015 album, Cry Baby, details what one faces at the brink of adulthood. The lyrics are a twisted mix of child innocence, teenage agony, and adult insensitivity, all sang with awesome basses and amazing synths.

Melanie is a solo artist, and was formerly a contestant on the third season of The Voice. She wowed the crowd with her amazing performance of Britney Spears “Toxic” and turned three chairs: Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, and Blake Shelton in which she choose Levine. Sadly she didn’t make it past week five. Her response to the elimination was “I never expected to get this far and this beyond what I’ve ever dreamed of. I’m just so glad I got to express who I am as an artist and really touch people’s hearts because that was the ultimate goal”.This was only the beginning to what was to come.

In 2014 She announced she signed on Atlantic Records and that she would be going on tour.

She also released her new hit single “Dollhouse” along with her music video on February 9th, 2014. Soon after she released her first EP “Dollhouse” with other singles such as “Carousel” , “Dead to Me”, and “Bittersweet Tragedy”. Her hit song Carousel was also featured on the Trailer for American Horror Story: Freak Show, and that song reached number nine on the Alternative Digital Songs chart.

The following year she released her first debut album “Crybaby”. Within this album there is a story about a girl named Cry Baby she is an emotional love sick girl who’s heart is too big for her body. She acts ask if she don’t care but she would always end up in tears. This album is was named #22 on “The 25 Best Pop Albums of 2015”(SPIN) and #1 on the “US Top Alternative Albums”(Billboard) This year Melanie’s Crybabies all over the world are waiting for her next music video for her song Mad Hatter. This is her last video for the album and that mean she will be releasing some hints on her new music. So keep an eye out, rumor has it, that she may be releasing a new album later on in 2017.

e finally got to do some in-depth game play with the switch and we were very satisfied. The switch is advertised as being a mobile gaming system that can be played in three different fashions and it holds up to that. It was easy to switch from each mode but I will say that there was a slight lag when switching from mobile to console mode. It was fun to play solo but it was surprisingly fun and easy to play multi-player as well. Playing on the go was fun but the tablet was just slightly too heavy for my hands and caused fatigue after playing for a longer period of time. The controls themselves were a bit of an issue. My hands wanted the joysticks to be on the same location but they have the left and right sides inverted. When you play with another person it becomes clear to see why everything is inverted as then it makes the two joy-cons identical. I would still prefer that solo mode be more comfortable as most will be playing this system solo more often. All and all it still is a cool system but would be an amazing system with just a few updates.

Playing the games were easy and fun. The only issue with the game play came when you try to reconnect the tablet back to the docking station. There is a bit of lag during game play when its docked versus when it is on its own. Other than that there was no real issues.

COST For the price I feel like Nintendo should have given more to the consumers such as the ability to browse the web, access youtube, as well as services like Hulu and Netflix. $300 is enough to buy a full entertainment system such as one made by Microsoft or Sony.

Both provide DVD/CD support, as well as the other video streaming options and they all are around the same price. Nintendo should either add more features or drop the price $100. A system that only provides games and no other forms of entertainment should not cost as much as a full featured system like the PS4 or XBOX1. But being able to play these exclusive titles mobility is still worth it.

In the end its up to you to decide if its worth to buy. It is a fun system that allows you to play mobility and with friends. It has quite a few hardware issues but its still a really fun system. Nintendo will probably get a better return from this console than the Wii U.

The Impact of OVERSEAS PLAYERS in the NBA

Basketball is well known as being one of the major sports in America, but it is quickly expanding to an international sport. The development of international players coming to the US and performing at the levels they are is unprecedented. There has certainly been a dramatic increase of international players coming to the United States professional league, the NBA, in the last ten to fifteen years.

The NBA began drafting and signing overseas players from places such as Europe and Africa more than ever in the mid eighties. Of course, there had been a couple of overseas players before this time, but none that made an impact like the players of this era. The development of these players all-around basketball skill level seemed almost out of nowhere.

European basketball players were mostly known as shooters until this time, like Drazen Petrovic (Croatia) or Kiki Vandeweghe (Germany), but then some new talent arrived.

One player stood out in particular, the great Hakeem Olajuwon (Nigeria). Over his career, Hakeem “the dream” Olajuwon averaged an amazing 21.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game.

Hakeem was a revolutionary player, showing people that you could use finesse rather than power to score close to the basket. His signature move, “the Dream Shake,” will be looked upon for years as one of the most revolutionary low-post moves to ever be created.

But Hakeem hasn’t been the only overseas player to shine. More recent players like Carlos Boozer, Tim Duncan, and Dirk Nowitzki quickly became some of the top performers in today’s game. But one of the most iconic overseas players to change the game would have to be the great Steve Nash (Africa, Canada).

Steve Nash, the two time most valuable player and eight time NBA all star, was known for his keen sense on the court. His ability to spot players and give them the ball in the position they needed to score was reminiscent of some of the greats.

His ability to move the ball was definitely his most known trait, but his scoring was just as good. Averaging 17.8 points a game during one of his MVP (most valuable player) seasons, he was as able to score as good as any guard in the league. His accolades are almost as impressive as his off court success, being an incredible businessman and life coach. Nash’s career came to a close at the age of forty, but the way he changed the game at the point guard position will be remembered forever.

Averaging 21 points and 9.6 rebounds per game at his peak, Yao quickly in his career became one of the leading big men of his class. Yao was just inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with the likes of Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal. Yao was an eight time all star and a five time All-NBA player.

I believe that the game of basketball is constantly in flux, growing and maturing to new heights as the players do the same.

I believe players like Hakeem Olajuwon, Steve Nash, and Yao Ming have paved the way for a new generation of international talent. Sure, they might be outnumbered for now, but the rapid advance of overseas players coming to the NBA is changing the game for the better like never before.

Basketball is expanding to an international scale of popularity, and challenging amateur players from around the world to progress their individual styles to reach the ultimate goal, the NBA.

TRY A BOX SERVICE. I have never tried this, but I would recommend it. If you are not familiar, it is a subscription where you can receive monthly or periodic shipments of clothes and accessories. Lots of people highly recommend this service. They get your height and sizes. They give you some incredible designs. Average cost for a box is approximately $75.

UPGRADE YOUR SHOES. Girls always notice your shoes.

It is essential to your outfit! If you can’t get new shoes at least make sure they are clean.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN. Wash your face twice a day.

When I say wash, I mean use skin cleaning products, facial cleansers, eye cream etc. For the extreme, buy a personal Microderm. May sound like a bit much but it is an incredible CRAZY useful machine. If you can’t afford it and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, I suggest TIEGE.

SLEEP. It is true that sleep will make you look better. It is recommended that we get 7 to 9 hours everyday. You will thank me when your 20 year class reunion rolls around and you look so much better than your classmates.

BRUSH YOUR TEETH. Imagine one day you see a girl sitting in a coffee shop looking nice, you go say hi, when you notice her golden brown teeth. Would you still think she is pretty? Well she feels the same way. So brush them and use mouthwash!

BE CONFIDENT. No matter your style, confidence is the most important style you can have. You can have the best outfit but if you do not have confidence, it matters not. Women love confidence and that is what truly sets you apart.

So gentlemen, these are the 10 fashion tips that will put you ahead of the game. I know it didn’t seem like much but pay attention to the details and the rest will speak for itself.

A new restaurant recently opened up in Wichita Kansas called Louisiana chicken. It sells similar products as other fried chicken restaurants such as biscuits, okra, red beans and rice, and more. First impression was good but there is some work that can be done on presentation Taste- 8.5 For the chicken, 5 for the biscuit and for the okra We tried out the chicken, the biscuits, and okra today and I was not disappointed. The chicken had a unique taste and a crisp skin. It was juicy and left me wanting more. The okra and the biscuits on the other hand were not my favorite. Both lacked a unique and bold taste. The biscuit could have been softer and the okra could have been more crispy. The chicken was really good but the sides we had were not impressive.

most likely due to the seasoning they used. The biscuit was a good size but look sort of dry and hard. The okra looked very soft. I was disappointed by the packing it came in. When you purchase larger amounts they give you a box for the chicken and Styrofoam cups for the sides. When you purchase smaller portions they sort of just put everything in a tray and throw it in a paper bag. When we got back to head quarters all my food fell around in the bag and I had to tilt it back to make sure it all got back in the tray. Better packaging for the smaller combos is much needed.

Cost-7 overall The cost is on par with other chicken places. I was wanting more options on the cheaper end but was disappointed.

Even something as simple as two pieces of dark meat and a biscuit was not an option. You had to get the combo ( which does include a side and a drink ) or the chicken by itself.

After trying the food I would recommend coming here because the chicken had a unique bold flavor and was really juicy. The sides could better and the over all presentation could improve but in the end the main seller is the chicken and they did an amazing job with it.

dr. Strange

In the year 1963, many amazing things came to light. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I had a dream” speech was delivered, the assassination of John F. Kennedy thrust Lyndon B. Johnson into office, and many more spectacular things. But one of the most spectacular of all of these things was the first appearance of Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel’s “strange tales #110.” Dr strange was a new breed of hero, using sorcery and magic as opposed to super powers. We finally got to see this come to the big screen.

Dr. Strange was a solid all-around origin story, just as marvel had hoped. But of course, every movie has its ups and downs; this movie was no exception. The action sequences were quite enticing, as they brought some of the powers of this side of Marvel’s history into their cinematic universe.

Personally, as a fan of the comic book universe, I think they could have done a better job introducing more magic into this film. Dr. Strange is one of the most powerful marvel characters in their entire history, and this movie just didn’t showcase that to its fullest extent. I do however believe that this was a solid introduction for the casual fan into the world of sorcery and magic. For the casual fan, this is their first taste of the magic that marvel has to offer. So, by not showing some of the insane things that Marvel has put in their comics involving sorcery, it didn’t scare off these casual fans.

Dr. Strange was very underpowered in this movie, which I expected coming in. Dr. Strange in this movie was not intended to be shown as the sorcerer supreme yet, but as a learner, trying to figure out how to use these new powers. I believe that was an excellent way of introducing him into this world.

The villain in this movie was a very regular marvel villain, who just seemed to be a near duplicate of the main hero. This is a theme in marvel movies, as it was in the first Iron Man, and Ant Man. It did, however work for this movie and it’s pace.

As the film went on, some of the humor in it just didn’t resonate with me. I think for a movie so beyond reason, it took itself a little too seriously. The humor didn’t quite fit in like it so expertly did in Captain America: Civil War. In fact, most of the jokes fell flat.

The visual effects in this movie were incredible, showing off all of these different dimensions that I hope will later be elaborated upon. The effects were very bizarre, with things like infinite realms filled with shapes and endless possibilities.

This movie has done very well at the box office so far, surpassing the first Iron Man movie as the highest opening weekend of any origin story in the Marvel universe. I would give Dr. Strange an overall 4 out of 5 stars, the same rating as I would give Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: the First Avenger. This movie did have its ups and downs, but it has this universe out in an incredible future. I hope to see even more from the sorcerer supreme soon.

s 2017 continues it is clear to see that technology is changing the world around us. Technology is opening up a new page in the era of quickness and convenience.

SELF DRIVING CARS Google has been testing self driving cars since 2009. This means that in the near future we will definitely have self driving cars. We already have the option of cruise control and the newer feature of self parking cars but to be able to fully take your hands off the wheel and do what you want during the commute will change the way we think about driving.

The next generation of self driving cars will probably be the safest way to travel as they can monitor more things at once and stay more focus than humans can. This could change how people get taxis or even get to work in their own car. This will probably lead to cars having chairs facing inward so people can interact with each other instead of monitoring the road.

SMART WATCHES The newest tech craze is the smart watch. It allows you to control many phone features from your wrist. It gives you an easier way to check notifications, monitor health and fitness, control music and tell time. Some watches can even run independently from the phone and have the ability to make calls and brows the web. This is a big jump from the calculator watch.

Although they are handy they are still just a companion to the phone . Even the watches that can work independently of the phone still have limited features ( and probably make it hard to text on) . Smart watches will change everything when the eliminate the need for a phone completely through added peripheral devices.

It’s not certain what all will be revealed in technology in 2017.
