BREAKING THE RULES OF

I

t has been a little over three years that we have published our TEENVIEW magazine in the Wichita and surrounding areas. Yet, I am not sure many of you know exactly what this publication means, and I think it is important that you do.

HOPELESSNESS Some years ago, as I tried to empower a group of young people at the local Boys and Girls Club, I noticed that I was starting to become ineffective. I regrouped and began to offer up some of my best presentations that would inspire a nation; yet, these few students were not moved. After a while, I stopped with the presentation (feeling a bit insecure in my ability to teach) and flat out asked the students, “What’s going on?”. They responded, “Mr. Murphy, we like you and appreciate what you are doing. We just don’t believe that what you are saying is possible for us.” I’ll never forget that day. In fact, I thought about it for a long time. These kids “are” hopeless. There is nothing I can say that can move them from this state. Hopelessness eats away at your will, conceals your dreams and smothers your passion... For the young, it steals the possibilities of the future. I knew that my purpose in “Nourishing My Brother” would be fulfilled in restoring hope to a hopeless generation. So after some thought and a great deal of prayer, it occurred to me that if the students could somehow touch their dream, then they would see it possible to obtain. Our youth needed to realize that their lives are significant, and that their views matter… and so was “birthed,” The TEENVIEW Magazine! Producing a magazine would allow them to meet people, attend events, research careers and experience opportunities that they could, otherwise, only dream. They could write about them for their peers to also learn from their experiences. It was a great idea! The students had a sense of restored hope as we worked to make this project happen. The only challenge was that I didn’t know how to produce a magazine by myself. It was no surprise that it took us a whole year to get the first one out, and then, another year for the second one. GIFTS WITHIN After a while and with little community support, we shelved the TEENVIEW project. We worked to put on events to try and raise money which turned out to be a BIG Fail! For those of you who may remember, Unity Ball/ Day 26 in 2009! Time went on and some of the original TEENVIEW Members said that we should “bring the magazine back.” It was 2012 when we partnered with MindFire Academy to do a summer program. We took about 10 kids and trained them to use Mac computers, taught them Illustrator and Photo Shop. None of the students had ever worked with computers on this level. They helped design the first magazine in September 2012. In November, we produced another magazine. We decided to produce a monthly magazine in January of 2013. The students are trained to not only write the articles, but, they even work on the layout, take pictures, work the website and even produce a TV show. We remind them that they have the “Gifts Within” to accomplish whatever their heart’s desire. Every year, students “graduate out” and new ones come in. We have clubs in surrounding schools and reach about 103 students in our network directly. Some students have gone on to receive big college scholarships, better jobs and unique opportunities because of their involvement with TEENVIEW Magazine. It is my goal to increase our effectiveness and reach students from Junior High through college. I hope to give them stronger skills in media arts, financial literacy, business etiquette (“soft skills”) and career development.

We are TEENVIEW

Every time we produce a magazine, you can be confident that we are restoring hope to young people and giving them a platform of endless possibilities!

Issue 56 December2018

The TEENVIEW Magazine is a publication designed “for teens, by teens, from a teen’s point of view”. It offers a platform for teens to connect with other teens on issues that are relevant to them. Teens are also able to gain “real-world” experience as they report on various topics and assist with the design and lay-out. Participants learn various computer programs, photography, general to creative writing and many other skills as a result of their involvement with the TEENVIEW Initiative. Moreover, participants are afforded great opportunities, such as meeting and interacting with influential people. TIME OF THE YEAR

t’s that time of year again. Time to break out the Christmas lights and hang them up and see what you have accomplished. How about instead you just get in your warm car and go look at nicer lights. Some of the best places to look at in your community is in Wichita. From drive through light shows to houses with their own radio stations you will not be disappointed. Most places start letting people take tours starting November 22nd and end at the 1st of January, but that is not true for the “Marshall Family Christmas Lights”. For that family they stay open until January 6th. The expense to see their lights is free but donations are accepted. The family has their own radio station and it is hooked up to the light show. So come on down and show some Christmas spirit.

Wichita has their own little taste of Texas love. The lights on Texas is a 300,000 lights and recently moved from Lawrence, Ks to Texas street in Wichita and they are still going on. The light show is free but donations are accepted. The address is 11603 W. Texas St. and it all starts at 5:30pm.

The next big light show is “2018 the Arcs Lights”. This amazing light show starts on November 22nd and ends December 20th. This light show has been a tradition for 22 years. It is an amazing light show when it comes to drive through light shows. At the end of the show Santa is available for pictures. They ask for donations Monday-Thursday and Friday- Sunday it is $10 a night. It starts at 5pm and they love visitors.

Like the places that are free, just come on down to the Lights on Gold street. That’s right there are lights on 5336 S. Gold St. Just get in your car, put the channel to 95.5 fm and watch all 13,000 lights which have been around since 2009. The light show is completely free and it starts Thanksgiving and it ends on New Years. The days are Sunday through Thursday and they stay open until midnight on Sunday.

Next on the list is the “Candy Cane Lane” light show. It is free because it is an entire neighborhood! This is a place where there is a Santa at a driveway waiting for kids to tell him what they want. This light show starts on Thanksgiving night.

Like lights on houses, there is always The Lights On Longview. The lights on Longview is a light display full of 50,000 lights and their own radio channel. The light show is free and you can just drive on up and tune in.

Texas is where people say everything is bigger, well

Now that there are plenty of fun places to have fun at let’s move on to a holiday classic, Christmas Lights At The North Pole Express. This light show is free but donations are accepted and it starts on November 22nd and ends on December 23rd. It starts at 6pm and ends at 9pm. Stop by to see Santa Claus, very cool lights, and the magic of the North Pole. The address is 1841 S. Glenn Street in Wichita.

Wichita is full of bright, amazing, and very colorful lights at Christmas time and all are family friendly.

HIV/AIDS

AWARENESS MONTH December is HIV/AIDS awareness month. HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the progressive deterioration of the immune system, breaking down the body’s ability to fend off some infections and other diseases. AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. More than 1.1 million people in the US have HIV. In 2016, 18,160 people received an AIDS diagnosis. Having HIV does not mean you have AIDS. With the proper treatment and medication some people with HIV may never get AIDS or it will prolong it getting to that advanced stage for a long time. HIV is contracted through blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk and rectal fluids. You cannot get HIV from spit, hugging someone, doorknobs, sharing food, mosquitoes, or public restrooms. However, HIV is spread through unprotected sex; anal or vaginal. The risk is low but it can be spread through oral sex. Having sex with another person with HIV/ AIDS doesn’t mean it’s okay to not use protection for there are other STDs you can contract and other strains of HIV infections you may contract that your body of course won’t be able to handle. The virus may also be spread if infected fluids come into contact with an open sore or cut, or with needles. You are able to get pregnant with HIV but it is possible to give the disease to your baby but with proper treatment it lowers the risk to less than 1%. Proper protection is a must with new partners. Not just birth control, but using condoms are a must. You should always get tested with every new partner, as should they. Getting tested every 6 months is important as well. HIV is not just a “gay” disease absolutely anyone can contract it. Unfortunately there is no cure. Receiving treatment after contracting HIV can help you live a normal lifespan in most cases. You can help prevent HIV from progressing to AIDS with proper treatment. There is financial help for treatment as it is expensive. People living with HIV/AIDS should never be shunned because they are living a hard battle. It is quite possible you may never know when someone is suffering from the disease. Many suffer in silence because they are afraid of what people will think of them. Not everyone with this disease is a promiscuous person and even if they were no one asks for this. It is important to be knowledgeable on a topic before casting judgment on others. And even with the proper knowledge you should still keep all opinions to yourself.

MOVIE THE GRINCH 2018

BEAUTIFUL BOY A movie following the struggles of a father and his drug-addicted son, Beautiful Boy really is a film about a modern epidemic and how often times those in tough situations can’t just be “fixed” by those around them. Beautiful Boy was released on October 12th of this year, but I wasn’t able to snatch a ticket until a few weeks later, if not a month (due to it being a more “indie” film and the fact that I live in Kansas, one of the last states to get films). But once I noticed tickets were on sale in Wichita, I was rather excited. The trailer for the film looked right up my alley - with sad emotional music and really powerful acting, I mean, Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carell. Who wouldn’t want to see it? So when I got to the theater, ordered some popcorn, and found my seat, and finally saw the movie - I was honestly pleasantly surprised. The film did have a few flaws (I’ll get to that later), but the acting. THE ACTING. It’s one of my favorite roles Timothee Chalamet has played, apart from Elio from Call Me By Your Name. And I’ve only really seen Steve Carell in The Office, so him playing a heartbroken father was a new role from him that I think he nailed. The storyline itself is really interesting and I really enjoyed watching, but I will say it was a bit on the longer, drawn-out side. Another aspect I wasn’t really fond of was the music. It didn’t really seem to know what it wanted to do, it would go from an 80s rock song to a jazzy tune, then over to an alternative sad song… very confusing to listen to. Overall, I think it was a pretty solid movie for those who are interested in more “indie” films, or even those who really like sad but heartwarming stories. I give it 8/10 stars.

Okay 90s and 00s babies, don’t get too upset. So the new Grinch movie came out this month and it’s caused a lot of mixed opinions - those who kind of dig it and those who absolutely hate it because they think no one can top the Jim Carrey version. However, I’m here to tell you it’s honestly not that bad. It’s not trying to copy or replace the 2000s movie, it’s just a good christmas-y film to watch during December to remember the real reason of Christmas. If you’re not into cartoons or children’s movies, you probably won’t like the film. But if you like a good animated flick, I’d definitely recommend watching this

one. It’s a fun film, not too long, Benedict Cumberbatch voices the Grinch and I mean, who doesn’t like Benedict Cumberbatch? Generally I don’t pay too much attention to the cinematography of animated films, but man, this one had some legit videography. And the animation was really cool and colorful. If you’re feeling festive or just want a good film to take your siblings or kids to - or who knows, maybe see on your own The Grinch was pretty okay. Not as bad as people make it out to be. Plus the dog max is really cute. I give it a solid 7/10.

In this day and age, I feel like the world is very polarizing, and there’s a pretty distinct line between groups of people. Specifically for the topic of the LGBTQ+ community, there’s a lot of hate targeted towards them. This is where a lot of art, and film in particular, can help give people a (somewhat) open mind on topics that they might feel a certain way towards. I recently saw the film Boy Erased, a movie about a teen boy who comes to realize he might be gay, but his baptist preacher father and mother don’t think it’s a good lifestyle and decide he needs to go to a conversion bible camp to wash away his “gay” sins. I don’t want to ruin the rest of the film in case you want to check it out, but it’s based on a true story and is honestly pretty tear-jerking. For the film itself, the acting is great. Lucas Hedges plays the main character and should honestly get some kind of award for his work. The director of the film also plays one of the preachers in the movie - Joel Edgerton - some of you may know him as Owen Lars from Star Wars. Other big stars like Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe are also in the film. The cinematography could be considered kind of bland, but I really loved it. It added to the simplicity of the story. The music was great - Troye Sivan had some original music in it so of course it’s amazing. And the ending… so powerful. Alright, so I don’t think you’d like this movie if you’re extremely religious or aren’t supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, but if you’re open minded and want to understand more, or even just really love a good emotional film, for sure check it out. I give it 9/10 stars.

Breaking the Christmas Fashion Rules

I love being fashionably unique and to have fun with my wardrobe, makeup, and accessories. Usually around winter the fashion gets a little blurry and is just jam packed with plaids and ironically cute “ugly sweater”, and the color red plastered on everything. But me personally i don’t like to stick to the rules of fashion, I like to make my own rules. I like to go to thrift shopping, buying cute accessories, and doing my makeup in fun new ways. Today i am going to be showing you tips on how to break the fashion norms and in a way be a trendsetter.

DENIM JEAN ART This is a very fun way to spice up your outfit and possibly show your art skills. If you’re not as strong with your inner artist don’t fret, you can always buy patches and iron them on your pants and make them unique. Mom jeans are really in style and my favorite thrift store to buy unique jean pants is the second story on the corner of Douglas and Grove. Michaels has a lot of patches, fabric markers, and transfer paper. PASTEL CHIC Lately I have been really into the pastel lolita look, my inspiration being an instagram model bunntea. She rocks pastel pink hair and super unique platform shoes and is honestly in my eyes a trendsetter. I think platform shoes and creepers are a really cute and fun way to express yourself. YRU is a really good brand of creepers and they have a lot of variety from platform to crocs the possibilities are endless. Prices range from 160 to 20 dollars. ACCESSORIES Lastly if the last two were a little too bold or expensive for you, this one will most likely work out a lot better. Accessories are the core of an outfit, they can either make the outfit or break it. One of my favorite things are unique hair clips and scrunchies, they can make you stand out in a cute way. You can always buy some cute ones at walmart and if your an online shopper like myself you can use onyx bunny, they have so many cute things from purses to cute phone accessories.t

COLLEGE written by: AJ McDaniel

T

he College Football regular season has finally come to an end now it’s time to prepare for bowl season. Now that used to be the only thing we all looked forward but now it is all about the college football playoff and waiting to see who will be playing for the title of the best team in college football. But don’t worry we pretty much just have a rerun from last year’s cast with a different #3 seed. Basically, the college football playoff has become a group for only the top (ACC, SEC, BIG10, BIG12, etc.) of the potential 20 different teams that could have had a chance at making it to this tournament there have only been 9 different teams to make it, and of these teams all absolutely none of them have been from outside of the top 5 conferences. Now I know obviously the best teams have to come out of the best conferences, but of

the past two years, that has not been the case. Last year UCF went undefeated all season long and didn’t even crack the top 10 in the college ranking. After being overlooked by the selection committee UCF was matched up against the only team to beat the soon to be national champions in a bowl game. UCF played Auburn in the Peach Bowl and UCF went on to be 13-0 and not win the National title. UCF has gone on to repeat it’s efforts from last year. They went undefeated all the way through the regular season and were undefeated yet again this means their last loss was December 16 against Arkansas State, almost a full two years ago. Now obviously this is a major outrage that UCF gets

FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS skipped over in the pursuit of the College football playoff after an unreal run of wins, but the selection committee is not completely out of line. Yes this team is on a crazy good run and yes they were definitely more deserving of a higher rank but being cautious has actually paid off more than you would think. Think about it this team has gone two years in a row without losing a game and if they win their bowl game they will be tied for the 18th longest winning streak in Division 1 history. There is good news for UCF though, the days of being slighted by the selection committee could be ending very soon. This year the UCF Knights will take on their second straight SEC team in a bowl game. If UCF can beat LSU in the Fiesta Bowl it will be nearly impossible to say that UCF is not the real deal.

College football is a borderline joke when it comes to trying to accurately make the best matchups it’s all about how a few people think about basically the top 5 conferences and how they can put the best teams from these conferences against each other. And these games turn out to be amazing but if I am a smaller team from a less powerful conference what am I truly playing for the best thing I can hope for is a bowl game that even gets aired on tv by a major network. There needs to be a better system and yes it may end up having to expand the playoffs to truly give teams outside of the power 5 conferences a chance to earn a chance. Otherwise, it will never be fair for the smaller teams to have a true chance to show off that they are the best.

nfortunately Bethesda (creators of fallout 76) let us down on this one. From the servers crashing and there not being any NPCs, this game has been disappointing. There’s also the ridiculous micro transaction options and the almost comical power armor edition. The power armor edition was advertised to come with a duffel bag, a power armor helmet, and a couple other trinkets for two hundred dollars. Sadly, instead of getting the duffel bag that was advertised, consumers received a nylon bag look alike. What was worse was the response Bethesda’s customer service gave quote, “we aren’t planning

on doing anything about it”. This is embarrassing to Bethesda’s name. They have made amazing titles like Skyrim, oblivion, and all the other fallouts. Apparently Bethesda is responding to owners of the power armor edition with possibly free duffel bags. On top of that, there is supposed to be huge in game updates sometime during December. Hopefully there will be good communication between players with Bethesda, and great DLCs along side in game updates, to make fallout 76 a game worth playing for the next couple of years. Too many players invested in fallout 76, theres got to be a return on that investment.

ARE FOLDABLE PHONES A THING? The days of the flip phone died with the birth of the touchscreen but we may be seeing a comeback in the near future but this time with a twist; the phones fold instead of flip. Companies like ZTE and Royole have already released their own while other companies like Samsung and Xiaomi are right on their tale. ROYOLE FLEXPAI Royole is in the lead right now with the worlds first foldable touchscreen phone. The FlexPai is 7.8 inches and folds 180 degrees. Its has a 1920 x 1440p screen and is scheduled to begin shipping this month. Royole says that its screen can withstand being folded 200,000 times. ZTE AXON M ZTE released this phone back in 2017. It is different than the rest of the phones because it has two separate screens, the rest of the competition is going with a singular bendable screen design. Both screens are 1920 x 1080p and when together make a 6.75-inch screen. The dual screen allows for different modes like a mirror, dual, extended, and traditional.

ROYOLE FLEXPAI

SAMSUNG GALAXY X Samsung has not released a phone yet nor a name but says that it will release a prototype in CES 2019. It is reported to have two screens, one foldable (7.3 inches, 1536 x 2152p display) and one as a cover screen( 4.58inch, 840 x 1960p display). The company has been developing bendable screens since 2011 but its first major success was with the Galaxy S and note. Late November the company reported that a group of 11 people stole and sold blueprints to an unknown Chinese manufacturer. Since this happened you probably can expect a similar phone to come out from another company.

tz techzone

In addition to these phones, LG and Xiaomi are heard of developing prototypes as well. ( LG is developing a TV that can roll into a box.) 2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Mobile device innovation. Stay tuned in for CES coverage, the biggest tech show of the year. If I company has something in the works it will be revealed then.
