We exist to dream—to think up what might be—with not one vision, but many, we can inspire one another to see...
At TEDxPortland 2015 we dive into stories of an untold future. Hopeful and scary, brilliant and curious, local, planetary and beyond. We explore the unknown and take a look into many windows, if only to catch a glimpse of our own Tomorrows.

JON WEXLER
Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, Jon Wexler has lived in Portland for the better part of the past 18 years where he has emerged as one of the most influential people in the sneaker community. He has worked his way up from an entry-level product role to that of Senior Director of Entertainment and Influencer Marketing at adidas. In this role he focuses squarely on people, and relationship management is his art.
VIDYA SPANDANA
Vidya Spandana is Director of Strategic Partnerships for Ushahidi, a global humanitarian technology nonprofit. As a teenager, she cofounded DMV.org, turning it into a multi-million dollar business by the time she earned her computer science and engineering degree. After extended emotional trauma and burnout, Vidya woke up one day and left her life and success behind. She spent three years traveling, studying the science of non-duality, teaching yoga, surfing, and making art. Vidya has since spent 15 years advising startups on strategic growth. In 2013, she became a Presidential Innovation Fellow working to bring President Obama’s Executive Order on Open Data to life, and working with federal agencies to prove how open data could drive economic growth in the world’s poorest countries.
KAREN GAFFNEY
Karen Gaffney is the President of a non-profit organization dedicated to championing the journey to full inclusion in families, schools, the workplace, and the community for people with developmental disabilities. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon, and earned a two-year Associate of Science degree from Portland Community College. She is a fearless open-water swimmer having successfully swam the English Channel, escaped Alcatraz (16 times) and conquered Lake Tahoe in 59-degree water. Karen swims to raise funds and awareness of what people with Down syndrome can do.

— Peter Drucker
CHANGE IS THE LAW OF LIFE. AND THOSE WHO LOOK ONLY TO THE PAST OR PRESENT ARE CERTAIN TO MISS THE FUTURE.
— John F Kennedy
G DOUGLAS BUNDY
G Douglas Bundy is a parent, musician, artist, and teacher at Raleigh Hills K-8 in Portland. Working from his underground lair at Raleigh Hills, he is building a technology arts program that seeks to preserve and develop creativity and the love of learning for children, teachers, and parents alike. Bundy uses project-based learning that starts with something a kid is interested in to foster creativity through video-game design, web applications, filmmaking, sound-design, programming, prototyping, and photography. At the core of his belief is the role of teachers to become “interest creators” and to “draw out” the remarkable capacities in children. Ideally this allows for teachers and students to collaborate to do real work for real purpose. One of his students encapsulated this vision beautifully with the statement: “The world needs more kidmade things.”
LINDA SMITH
Linda Smith is a leader in the global movement to end sex trafficking. In 1998, while serving in Congress, Linda traveled to a notorious brothel district in India where the hopeless faces of women and children forced into prostitution compelled her to found the Shared Hope International organization. Linda is the primary author of From Congress to the Brothel and Renting Lacy, co-author of The National Report on Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, and instrumental in creating the DEMAND Report. Linda has testified before Congress, presented at national and international forums, and has been published in numerous news outlets and journals. Linda served as a Washington State legislator (1983-93) before being elected to Congress in 1994.

PER FO RM ERS
THE VON TRAPPS
Meet The von Trapps, the next generation. Cut from the DNA of the greatest musical ever, the new sound of music is sweet, honest and raw. It pierces the air with lush harmonies, tight little constructions and a force that knocks you back a little, like a sudden wind whooshing through your hair. Sofia (26), Melanie (24), Amanda (23) and August (20) can summon the spine-tingling magic of history’s most enduring musical soundtrack. For much of their lives, they’ve toured extensively as ambassadors of music, heritage, and hope. But the siblings are bent on bringing that legacy to a new place as musical explorers and harmonic folk rockers, in their own right, on their own terms.
JACOB MILLER AND THE BRIDGE CITY CROONERS
Jacob Miller and The Bridge City Crooners bill their music as West Coast ragtime, jazz, and blues. Although you can hear all of those influences, there’s also a strong undercurrent of youthful abandon. It is the kind of wild joy from the American road (or rails) that filled the gas tank of Woody Guthrie’s dreams and kept him rolling down the highway.
TODAY’S SHOCKS ARE TOMORROW’S CONVENTIONS.

HIS TO RY
Established in 1984, TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design—three broad subject areas that are collectively shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. The diverse audience of CEOs, scientists, creatives, and philanthropists is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono. But TED is about much more than famous names. It is about passion, laughter, beauty, ingenuity and ideas capable of changing the world.
Dr. Laurie Marker, Portland Art Museum – 2013
Macklemore & David Rae, Keller Auditorium – 2014
TEDx is part of a revolution in global education, made possible by local organizers wanting to engage their communities. Established in 2009, over 9000 TEDx events have been put on worldwide. Every week, in over 150 countries, people are coming together to pursue ideas worth spreading. Three words: Ideas. Worth. Spreading. We seek to build partnerships that will surface, promote and support great ideas. The concept is simple: create an immersive environment where prominent local organizations, thought leaders, and key enablers from vastly different fields can crossfertilize and draw inspiration from unlikely places. This foundation of partners, speakers, and influencers forms the basis of the community we are trying to build in Portland and beyond.
COMMANDMENTS
1
2
3
Dream big. Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. Reveal something never seen before. Do something the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world.
Show us the real you. Share your passions, your dreams ... and also your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure as well as success.
Make the complex plain. Don’t try to dazzle intellectually. Don’t speak in abstractions. Explain! Give examples. Tell stories. Be specific.
7
Feel free to comment on other speakers’ talks, to praise or to criticize. Controversy energizes! Enthusiastic endorsement is powerful!
8
9
Don’t read your talk. Notes are fine. But if the choice is between reading or rambling, then read!
End your talk on time. Doing otherwise is to steal time from the people that follow you. We won’t allow it.
COMMANDMENTS
4
Connect with people’s emotions. Make us laugh! Make us cry!
5
10
Rehearse your talk in front of a trusted friend ... for timing, for clarity, for impact.
Don’t flaunt your ego. Don’t boast. It’s the surest way to switch everyone off.
6
No selling from the stage! Unless we have specifically asked you to, do not talk about your company or organization. And don’t even think about pitching your products or services or asking for funding from stage.

JONATHAN CASE
Featured illustrator Jonathan Case is an Eisner Award-winning author/artist from Portland, Oregon. Praised by critics and creators (Publishers Weekly, Gene Yang, and Stephen King among them), Case’s work ranges from intricate graphic novels to huge murals, often with a period-specific focus. His paintings occupy Portland hotspots like The Modern Man Barbershop on Hawthorne, McMenamins Crystal Hotel, and the new non-profit brewery, Ex Novo Brewing.
His most recent YA novel, Before Tomorrowland, is out this month from Disney Publishing, and was created in collaboration with film legends Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Tomorrowland), Damon Lindelof (Lost), and Jeff Jensen of Entertainment Weekly. In September, Dark Horse Comics publishes Case’s next graphic novel, The New Deal, a fast-paced look at Depression-era New York City in which Case explores class misconceptions, racial tension, and deft cat burglary through the lens of a bellhop and a maid in the Waldorf Astoria.
Case lives in Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood with his wife, Sarah, and their two children, Dorothy and Otis.
COLD BREW COCKTAILS
COLD BREW COCKTAILS combine coffee and spirits, a sort of beautiful beverage estuary, procuring a lovely bold and boozy twilight effect. They are refined enough to find served up in a highball glass nearest you, and easy enough to mix up at Sunday brunch on the patio. Here are a few of our favorites. VISIONS OF TOMORROWS
VISIONS -
In order to find solutions and fulfill our potential, we look to our most daring thinkers. For TEDxPortland 2015, we asked over 60 of our city’s artists to use the circle motif to conceive
a window into what the future could be. Through these visions, the artists seek to guide our present toward a better tomorrow.

Thank you for joining us, listening to new ideas and (hopefully) spreading them elsewhere. That’s what this is all about. We hope you were inspired today, maybe even transformed.
It’s
up to us to make our ideas a reality —to act, not just dream. That alone will change the Rose City and beyond.
