The month of June brings so many freedoms to us. We can be free of coats, boots, and scarves. We are free to travel a little more. We are free to enjoy the sun more. Did you know the longest day of the year is usually June 21st or 22nd? We are free to indulge in ice cold sweet delicacies and cookouts. We are free to enjoy beach trips and amusement park visits. According to the CDC, if you are vaccinated, you are now free to be mask-free in most public places. This leads me to the two most important freedoms that are also celebrated in June: Juneteenth and salvation.

I was an HBCU graduate and was serving in the US Army when I first heard about Juneteenth. I’m ashamed to say it, but it’s the truth. Just in case you are still not aware of what Juneteenth is, let me drop some knowledge for you. Juneteenth is the oldest celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. From its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the same year my alma mater was founded, the observance of June 19th as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

As of last year, it will be officially celebrated in 47 out of 50 states. Why is this date so special? It is because President Lincoln had actually freed the slaves almost 30 months, 2.5 years, BEFORE Juneteenth occurred. It became a Texas state holiday in 1980. As of 2019, bills have been submitted so that it may be recognized as a national and federal holiday.

I couldn’t talk about freedom and not mention how we can all be free in Christ. Over 2000 years ago, Jesus died for our sins. He paid the price for us all to be free. We don’t have to wait for a special day every year to do so. We can celebrate every second, minute, hour and day. At that very moment that you confess your faults to Him, accept His forgiveness and profess Him as Lord and Savior over your life. You can shout to the roof tops every day, whenever you want to…

Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, you are free at last.

Serve with grace!

Sorors, thank you for all the work you do to improve the lives of the residents of Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia. As we wind up for the summer months amidst a pandemic, let us remember that we are a faith-filled, resilient sisterhood of women who put our trust in a God who has promised to never leave or forsake us.

As we take a respite from sorority work, let’s safely travel and continue to pray for God’s protection, healing, comfort and direction during these uncertain times.

Our June 2021 meeting will be held virtually (refer to the Soror Virtual Meeting Guide for useful tips for participating in virtual meetings). Our June virtual meeting will be business casual; wear your favorite AKA shirt while we Zoom together.

Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and progressively worsens. The most common early symptom is difficulty remembering recent events. Good nutrition, physical activity and engaging socially are known to be of benefit in aging and may help in reducing the risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s. Let’s join the Program Committee and help inform our communities about the symptoms and steps to help reduce the risks of Alzheimer’s disease.

Please come to the June Chapter meeting prepared to vote on the calendar of activities for the remainder of the year and whether the Chapter will conduct a fall MIP. Let’s get excited about the Virtual Boule Part II/ Leadership Seminar in July.

Let’s prepare to continue our journey to serve communities in need and protect our great sisterhood so our legacy lives on forever by taking time out this summer to:

• Mobilize, get out the vote, and take action to protect the issues we care about, such as equal justice,

education, and healthcare. Contact your senator about the George Floyd Policing Act and other critical

legislation.

• Read our governing documents. Our Bylaws Committee provided a roadmap during the webinar on

our governing documents.

Finally, let’s continue to check up on each other and make health and safety a priority by wearing your mask and gloves when venturing outside, observing the social distancing rules, and observing the stay-at-home orders during this pandemic.

Thanks for the individual prayer calls to sorors while they are going through difficult times. l Soror Debbie Wesley, Soror Gwendolyn Everett, and the 65th Anniversary Committee for your hard work in planning what is to be a wonderful 65th anniversary celebration. l Soror Soror Chiquita King, Soror T’Anya Newell, and the Target 3 Subcommittee for the awesome meal services to the shelter and for the financial literacy webinars to keep us all knowledgeable about our finances. l Soror Tori Watkins, Soror Karlyn Boler, and the Target 2 Subcommittee for keeping us abreast of tips, tools and advice on staying healthy – the yoga session was very refreshing – gentle moves for the body. l Soror Tamika McPherson and the Sisterly Relations Committee for keeping us connected to each other through the multiple activities of the Sister Circles. l Soror Diann Burns, Soror Patricia Edwards, Soror Marcy Jessup, and the Scholarship Committee for your work and due diligence in reviewing the scholarship applications, interviewing the students, recommending the potential scholar recipients, and securing the Chapter vote to award the students over $31,000 in scholarships for 2021! l The Archives Committee for diligently working on devising a process to account for the Chapter property items. l Soror Danielle Hogan and the Membership Committee for your countless hours and time you so unselfishly give responding to the multiple inquiries from women interested in joining the Chapter/sorority and guiding the transferring and reactivating sorors into our Chapter. l The sorors who devote their time, energies, and funds to make protective masks and provide supplies (i.e. toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, food, etc.) to your fellow sorors and those in need – thank you, sorors. Thank you all for your tireless efforts in “Service to all Mankind.”

In the words of Soror Marjorie Parker, “Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue to be a channel through which individuals may find together what they cannot find separately or independently – security, a sense of responsibility, the response of friends, and opportunities for experiences in mutually rewarding services.”

MAY SPOTLIGHT Yoga Session On Wednesday evening, May 19, 2021, 63 Chapter sorors and community members logged on to Zoom for a gentle flow session, hosted by the Target 2 sub-committee. Facilitated by yoga instructor, Jessica Howard Jackson, the event served as a calming and rejuvenating break from the day. Evaluation responses received were overwhelmingly positive. Special thanks to those who participated and made this event a true success!

Target 3: Building Your Economic Legacy Chairman: Soror T’Anya Newell Co-Chairman: Soror Ronké Hughes

Sorority Goal: To reach 100,000 women throughout the United States and the communities we serve worldwide in order to raise awareness of risk factors for heart disease through partnerships with community health professionals and engage in the community in low-impact, heart health activities and support.

Sorority Goal: To reach 20,000 African-Americans committed to increased savings and asset accumulation; to reach 20,000 through workshops on credit repair and monitoring; to increase direct member support of Black businesses by 5% or 10,000 Black business; and to supply goods and services to 100,000 homeless individuals and families.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month!

June 20—the summer solstice—marks “The Longest Day” where people across the world will fundraise to fight to end Alzheimer’s. While our Chapter plans to send a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association, check out their website for other ways to get involved and spread the word. Click here to be directed to the site.

Chairman: Soror Veronica Jackson Co-Chairman: Soror Eboni Jones Sorority Goal: To expose 20,000 middle and high school youth and community members to the legendary works of African-American artists during the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement, as well as their influence on contemporary African-American art and culture.

On Sunday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m., in celebration of African-American Music Appreciation Month, Target 4 invites you to its second Arts in the Afternoon event—a free jazz concert featuring award-winning duo S.O.A.R. (Sounds of April and Randall). This event is open to the public; register at Eventbrite.

NAME THAT TUNE…that sends you waaaaay back! James Sullivan, a blogger for Pandora®, wrote an article entitled, “30 Times Black Music Changed the World.” The blog is a treatise on the contributions of Black musicians and music performed by Black musicians. Sullivan suggested that there are certain songs that transcend time, remaining relevant across generations. Do any of these songs ring a bell?

During these unprecedented times, we have all turned to the arts as a means of comfort and escape. What is YOUR song of comfort, peace, or joy?

Target 5: Global Impact Chairman: Soror Edith Bartley Co-Chairman: Soror Karen Ford-Jackson Sorority Goal: To conduct a large-scale community service project that reaches across regions, borders, and oceans; to collect 500,000 shoes for Soles4Souls, 50,000 eyeglasses for Lions Club International, as well as 50,000 dresses for girls and 25,000 shirts for boys for the Pillowcase Project; to support 10,000 refugees of color through partnerships with organizations engaged in the work.

To Our Newest Sorors Soror Ruby Burrell

Soror Ruby currently lives in Silver Spring, MD. Soror Gloria Bell, her friend of 30 years, encouraged her to join Zeta Chi Omega. Soror Ruby was initiated in 1973 in the Alpha Epsilon Chapter at Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. She is a Silver Star, originally from Blackstone, VA. She has one daughter, and on May 1 celebrated her 40-year wedding anniversary. Soror Ruby is retired from the Social Security Administration as Deputy Commissioner and Chief Strategy Officer. She enjoys traveling, mentoring, and is a Kennedy Center Member.

Soror Sharie Gray Soror Sharie currently lives in Arlington, VA and is originally from Gifford, SC. She relocated to the DMV area in October of 2019. She met Soror Sherisse Kenerson at an event before the pandemic started. Soror Sharie was initiated in Spring 2006 Mu Xi Chapter at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Soror Sharie works for a non-profit in DC as an instructional designer and eLearning developer. She enjoys traveling, watching movies, learning about historical events, and multimedia productions. Soror Sharie spent 10 years as a teacher in North Carolina before switching careers in 2018. Additionally, she has a bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and a master’s degree and graduate certificate, both from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

Soror Staci Luckett Soror Staci resides in White Plains, MD. She is originally from Carville, LA. She was previously a member of Zeta Chi Omega. Soror Staci was initiated in 2009 into the Nu Lambda Omega Chapter. She has a son who previously served in the Marine Corps and is now in school and working in Virginia. Soror Staci is a Management and Program Analyst at the Veterans Affairs Office. She enjoys running and going to the golf range.

Soror Tiara Saray Smalls Soror Tiara prefers to be called Saray. She currently resides in Alexandria, VA and is originally from Charleston, SC. Soror Saray was initiated in Spring 2011 in the Tau Beta Chapter located at Queens University of Charlotte, NC. Soror Saray is a Senior Program Associate for Health Promotion and Education with George Washington University. She enjoys cooking/eating, listening to podcasts, adventures, traveling, and working out/fitness. Some of her achievements include Master of Public Health (MPH), Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Conference Presented at George Washington University Diversity Summit in November 2020, and she is published co-author in the American Journal of College Health in November 2018.

Soror Erica Stallworth Simon Soror Erica resides in Lorton, VA and is originally from Pensacola, FL. She was initiated in 2001 in the Beta Alpha Chapter at Florida A&M University. She was previously a General Boule Member. Soror Erica is a U.S. Army Civilian Engineer. She attends Alfred Street Baptist Church. She enjoys running marathons, reading, home decor, fashion, volunteering, cooking, and event planning. Soror Erica completed the 2018 Marine Corps Marathon in 4:33:50.

Soror Meronne Teklu Soror Meronne currently lives in Alexandria, VA. She is originally from Springfield, VA. She is transitioning from general membership to graduate. She was initiated in 2015 into the Nu Chi Chapter, College of William & Mary. She has held the positions of Communications Chairman, Events Chairman, Membership Co-Chairman, and Technology Chairman. Soror Meronne works as a Technology Management Consultant for a large professional services firm. She is involved with IEA Councils on Higher Education, Wegene Ethiopian Foundation. Soror Meronne enjoys activism, music, reading, philanthropy, and walking. Soror Meronne is running for Alexandria City Council in the June 8th Democratic Primary.

Greetings sorors, As we approach summer, we know you are anxious to get out and enjoy yourselves. The Standards Committee is requesting a commitment from each of us to enhance our knowledge of the Sorority’s policies and procedures. Please take some time over the summer to become familiar with the sorority and Zeta Chi Omega Chapter’s operational responsibilities.

As we break for summer, please be reminded to keep in touch with your fellow sorors. Below are some ideas for Virtual Activities to help us celebrate summer: 1. Virtual Beach Party - Everyone dresses up in tropical attire, dance to tropical music, learn a tropical themed dance or stroll to a tropical sounding song, craft activity that is tropical themed, create a tropical drink or treat together.

2. Skincare Event - Invite a dermatologist to chat with sorors about the importance of sunscreen for women of color and provide tips on how we can protect and beautify our skin. Host a zoom providing a lesson on how to do an at-home facial.

3. Virtual Summer Book Club - While many are vacationing or taking a break, read a book as a group and discuss it with sorors. Consider having the sorors who participate create a special sorority themed "book nook" or space in their home that they can show off during the virtual discussions.

4. Keep in touch via letter writing, phone calls, email, texting, and social media (Facebook).

STANDARDS COMMITTEE EVALUATION TEAM The role of the Standards Committee Evaluation Team is to ensure all Chapter programs, activities and events are evaluated. Participant feedback is used to drive continuous improvement, increase program efficiencies, and facilitate more effective execution of future and recurring events. The results of these surveys are used to inform committee and event planners on whether their efforts have been successful and whether the Chapter should continue them. 2021 ZCO RETREAT The 2021 Retreat Committee is vigorously preparing for the Retreat, scheduled for Friday-Saturday, August 6-7, 2021. The theme is: “Sisters Supporting Sisters: Strengthening the Ivy Vines.” Registration for the Retreat will end July 15, 2021. Celebrating Our History

Zeta Chi Omega Chapter is remembering and celebrating 65 years of providing outstanding community service to Arlington and Alexandria, VA. In 1954, Evelyn Reid Syphax gathered several sorors together and formed an interest group which led to the direct chartering of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter in 1956. Zeta Chi Omega Chapter is the largest chapter in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Chapter is known locally, regionally, and nationally.

Several Chapter members have held offices on all levels within Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Zeta Chi Omega has had two Regional Directors, two Supreme Parliamentarians, one Supreme Tamiouchos, one Second Supreme Anti-Basileus, one Executive Director, one Member-atLarge, and many others who served on both regional and international committees.

Through the years, Zeta Chi Omega Chapter has provided many services and scholarships to our communities. It has a well-deserved reputation for providing “service to all mankind.” Some projects, once begun, have continued for many consecutive years. Some of the longest continually running programs were/are:

• Chapter Scholarship program - 65 years

• Cotillion - 62 years

• Senior Citizens’ Christmas Luncheon - 50 years

• EAF - 45 years

• Shelter Support (homeless, seniors, abused

women, unwed mothers, children) - 40 years

• St. John’s Baptist Church Tutoring Program

- 35 years

• Step-out Girls (Charles Houston) - 31 years

• Reading is Fundamental - 30 years

• Race for the Cure - 25 years

• Global Impact Days - 11 years Some programs/projects have had “starts and stops” but have continued intermittently over 65 years, such as:

In March 2020, the world changed the way it communicated and conducted business. A new era in the history of the Chapter propelled it into joining the future by being part of the virtual world and learning more about and doing more with technology. Zeta Chi Omega Chapter stepped up to the plate and has not missed a beat. The Chapter found new and creative ways to provide some of the same continuing services and started new ones, such as:

For 65 years, the women of the Zeta Chi Omega Chapter have continued the services started by the Charter members and have added additional programs and projects as the need arose and as the Chapter has grown.

Ivy Beyond the Wall Pearl Soror Deloris Geneva Hawkins Evans

“I hold the gift of living for another day and having the opportunity to really make a difference.” – Carole Joy A native of Fairfax County, Virginia, Soror Deloris was born July 22, 1932, into the strong Christian family of John and Eliza Hawkins, who raised 5 children, one of which was handicapped with Downs Syndrome. She was born and reared in McLean, VA during the “Depression Years” and attended Odrick Colored School, also in McLean.

In 1938, her family moved to Vienna, VA, where she attended the Vienna Colored School, which is now Louise Archer Elementary, named in honor of a great and noble principal. After completing elementary school, she traveled over 40 miles per day to the Manassas Regional High School because Fairfax County did not have middle or high schools opened for Blacks.

She was always an academic achiever and enjoyed helping others to achieve. In 1949, she entered Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC on a 4-year work-study scholarship. In 1953, Soror Deloris graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She was hired immediately by the Charlotte City Public Schools at Fairview Elementary where she completed her student teaching and spent 2 years of service in Charlotte Public Schools. Neither of Deloris’ parents attended high school but gave their children a good education, strong Christian values, and a spirit of family living.

In 1949, Soror Deloris met James Evans, her college sweetheart, who attended St. Augustine’s College (now St. Augustine’s University) in Raleigh, North Carolina. The year 1954 was the start of their 57 Golden Years of Marriage. Both were extremely active in family affairs, community service, church activities, political affairs and social and civic organizations. She served 33 years in the education field as a teacher, assistant principal, staff development specialist, and her last assignment as principal. In 1973, she received a Master’s in Education Administration from George Mason University. She explored every available opportunity offered during the segregate years in Fairfax Public Schools.

Although Soror Deloris gave full time to anything she was involved in, her greatest joy aside from her church duties was her work in the sorority. In 1950, she was initiated into the Gamma Delta Chapter at Johnson C. Smith University. After graduation, she united with the Alpha Lambda Omega Chapter, Charlotte, NC, where she worked tirelessly with community service projects. In late 1956, she affiliated with Zeta Chi Omega Chapter. She has served as Anti-Basileus, Ivy Leaf Reporter, and Chairman of the Scholarship, Business and Economics, Retreat, and Program Committees.

She served as the Chapter’s “Dean of Pledges.” She also served on the International Vendors Ad Hoc Committee and was chairman of the Programs Committee for the 46th Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. Soror Deloris was named ZCO Soror of the Year, and in 1999, was honored as MidAtlantic Region Soror of the Year.

Soror Deloris and her husband served as AKA National venders from 1984 – 2003 and traveled extensively to many regional and national conferences.

She was elected Class Agent of the Johnson C. Smith Alumni Class of 1953.

Soror Deloris gave invaluable service and time in her church life as a church clerk, scholarship organizer, youth choir director, choir member, first woman trustee (1958), budget director, and building committee chairman. She served at Shiloh Baptist Church in McLean, New Hope Baptist Church in Vienna, and New Union Baptist Church in Vienna. In her later years, she returned to the church where she started, Shiloh Baptist Church.

After retirement she worked seven years with the Virginia State Education Department, George Mason University and University of Virginia in the new teacher certification program: Beginning Teacher Assistance Program (BTAP). She seemingly never grew tired of using her God-given talent of service.

Soror Deloris’ service extended to the community. In the 1950’s, she worked alongside her family to register African Americans to vote. We, Us and Friends, founded in 1955, selected her as President of this civic and social club. With this club, she managed the college scholarship fund. She also worked with the youth in the NAACP as an executive board member and rechartered the Fairfax NAACP youth council in 2002, where she served as advisor for over 5 years. As a result of her commitment, she was nominated for the 2003 Human Rights Commission Award.

Soror Deloris was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James, her daughter, Monique, and brother, Nathan. She leaves to cherish fond memories: her son, Glenn; brother, John; sisters, Burnadine and Barbara; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

ZCO CALENDAR Sorors, Let’s Get Organized for 2021!

Meetings, events, programs, oh my! With so many exciting Zeta Chi Omega occasions to attend, wouldn’t it be helpful if you could see everything in one place? Now you can! Introducing the newly populated Zeta Chi Omega chapter calendar, available in the “Members Only” section of our chapter website.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE CHAPTER CALENDAR? There are two ways to view the calendar.

From the Wild Apricot Mobile Application 1) Download the “Wild Apricot for Members” mobile application from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

From the Chapter’s Website 1) Go to www.zetachiomega.wildapricot.com and log in with your member credentials.

2) Under the Members Only tab, select “Chapter Calendar.”

2) Log in using your member credentials. These credentials will be the same as what you use to access the Members Only portion of the chapter website.

3) Once you are logged in, go to the “Events” button at the bottom of the application. There, you can view upcoming chapter events.

4) If you see an event that is relevant to you, select “Add to calendar” and the event will be duplicated onto your personal phone’s calendar. Note that registration via Wild Apricot is not enabled for most events, but this does not prevent you from saving the event to your phone’s calendar.
