During today’s times, it’s sometimes challenging to remain inspired while uncertainty and sadness abound. I am reminded of a quote by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who said “Our Lord has written the promise of resurrection, not in books, alone, but in every leaf in springtime.”

It is this promise that binds us more closely to our faith and plants seeds of hope and inspiration in our hearts. We are witnessing history unfold as we navigate the pandemic and what some are now calling a “tridemic,” referring to the financial turmoil, social unrest/racial reckoning, and the global public health crisis. Many in our Chapter have been impacted directly by the loss of a beloved family member or friend, and some are now among those we count as an Ivy Beyond the Wall. As we grieve the loss of over 500,000 souls in the United States alone, changes in employment, and changes in our health and daily life, there is still hope and renewal.

Zeta Chi Omega Chapter continues to be of service to mankind as we work for the betterment of communities around the globe. We are blooming where we are planted, and together we are lifting up the promise of hope for a better tomorrow through our volunteerism, service and lending our talents and voice to notable causes. For your service, we say thank you, and we lift up praises for your presence and continued engagement.

Let us continue to be inspired and to inspire. Let us be curious to learn and grow, to practice our faith traditions and deepen our spiritual walk while spreading seeds of goodness and love to encourage future generations. Whether you follow a religious observance such as Easter, or you have no formal practice or belief, let us be inspired by the story of Resurrection Sunday and the hope of the risen life and the love of the Lord.

As Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

May this season of renewal help us each to hold onto the signs of hope and the possibilities ahead. Renew, restore, and rejoice! Keep hope in your sights, and remember, no matter how dark the night, the morning brings light and promise. Shine, sorors, shine.

Spring has sprung and the coronavirus pandemic is still upon us. Let’s continue to pray that God keeps His cloak of protection around us. Continue to social distance, wash your hands frequently, sanitize items, and wear your masks.

COVID-19 Vaccine registration and information for the metro area is in the Rose Petal. Please make sure you are keeping up with email updates sent from our Directorate and government officials.

“Senate Resolution 316,” dated March 2004, designates April as Financial Literacy Month, to raise public awareness about the importance of financial education and the serious consequences associated with lack of understanding about personal finances. Join Target 3 on April 12th and 24th for the finance webinars (see Program Page for more information).

Research shows that African American business ownership has dropped drastically, and, unfortunately, thousands of businesses have closed for good during the pandemic. Let’s continue to support our black businesses and record your purchases on the Black Dollar Log. Submit your purchase log to the Economic Legacy Committee at economiclegacy@aka-zco.org.

April is also Minority Health Awareness Month. Check out the Program Page and stay tuned for Target 2 tips and resources on staying healthy in the Rose Petal.

The April General Body meeting will be held on April 3rd at 10:00 a.m. via Zoom. Registration details will be provided via the Rose Petal. Please register early and remember Zoom etiquette - mute your mic when you are not speaking in order to minimize or eliminate background noise.

Thank you for logging on in numbers to celebrate and support our 19th Mid-Atlantic Regional Director, Soror Jennifer King Congleton, at the virtual MARC held March 25th-28th. Approximately 100 Chapter sorors logged into the MARC. It was a very informative and virtually engaging conference.

MARC Highlights: The conference opened to a heartwarming rendition of the gospel hit “He Has Done Marvelous Things.”

Soror Jennifer King Congleton provided the State of the Region and the Mid-Atlantic Region is strong. Here are the highlights: • 7,500 active members, since Fall 2019 over 11,400 new members • 5 leadership fellows • $328,000 Educational Advancement Foundation, Inc. • Helped over 500 students with #CAP℠ assistance • Target 2 conducted over 500 health and wellness programs, to include Pink Goes Red, National Caregivers Day, and Breast Cancer Awareness Impact Days “no cost” mammograms • Target 3 hosted over 165 economic program and spent over two million dollars supporting black businesses • Target 4 exposed over 12,000 students to the Arts • Target 5 donated 12,900 pairs of shoes and 4,600 pairs of glasses We then celebrated with our jewels at the virtual Jewels celebration. Check out the pictures in the DPGS section of the newsletter and on the website! Congratulations to all of our new Chapter jewels!

MARCH SPOTLIGHT Mid-Atlantic Region Sew-a-Thon The Mid-Atlantic Region Program Committee challenged chapters to participate in a region-wide Target 5 Sew-a-Thon competition to help the sorority achieve its goal of sewing 25,000 pillowcase shirts for boys in Haiti. As of December 31, 2020, our sorority had sewn 14,807 (59%) pillowcase shirts.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS REPORT Signature Program: #CAP℠ (College Admission Process) Chairman: Soror Andrea Sparks-Brown Co-Chairman: Soror Madeline Wingate-Alfonso Sorority Goal: Chapters will assist 50,000 high school students with the college application and enrollment process.

Target 1: HBCU For Life Chairman: Vacant Co-Chairman: Vacant Sorority Goal: Chapters will enlighten the community regarding HBCUs as institutions of excellence with historical and current significance, as well as raise $10 million to establish and capitalize the Alpha Kappa Alpha HBCU Endowment Initiative.

Target 3: Building Your Economic Legacy Chairman: Soror T’Anya Newell Co-Chairman: Soror Ronké Hughes

Sorority Goal: To reach 100,000 women throughout the United States and the communities we serve worldwide in order to raise awareness of risk factors for heart disease through partnerships with community health professionals and engage in the community in low-impact, heart health activities and support.

Sorority Goal: To reach 20,000 African-Americans committed to increased savings and asset accumulation; to reach 20,000 through workshops on credit repair and monitoring; to increase direct member support of Black businesses by 5% or 10,000 Black business; and to supply goods and services to 100,000 homeless individuals and families.

April is Minority Health Awareness Month! Are you aware of the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services? It was created in 1986 as one of the most significant outcomes of the landmark 1985 Secretary’s Task Force Report on Black and Minority Health. The mission of the OMH is to improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations through the development of health policies and programs that will help eliminate health disparities.

Specific OMH focus areas are:

• Prevention (physical activity and nutrition);

• Clinical conditions, such as substance use

disorder, hypertension, HIV, maternal health,

sickle cell disease and trait, diabetes (including

prevention of peripheral artery and kidney

disease), Lupus, Alzheimer’s, and cancer

prevention; and

• Individual social needs and social

determinants of health.

Community Shelter Donations/Operation AKA Assist On April 25th, our Chapter will work with the Ivy Foundation of Northern Virginia (IFNV) to deliver meals and financial literature to the Carpenter Shelter. This month, we will also work with the IFNV to send Metro SMART trip cards to residents of the Residential Program Center to help them travel to job interviews, as well as support Global Impact Day by providing masks to our adopted shelters.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS REPORT (con’t) Target 4 Signature Program: The Arts!

Chairman: Soror Veronica Jackson Co-Chairman: Soror Eboni Jones Sorority Goal: To expose 20,000 middle and high school youth and community members to the legendary works of African-American artists during the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement, as well as their influence on contemporary African-American art and culture.

On March 24th, Target 4 hosted The Fab 5 of Harlem, an original skit written by our very own Soror Shannan Burrell and performed by the drama students of T.C. Williams High School and Francis C. Hammond Middle School. The skit highlighted five women of the Harlem Renaissance. The students did a phenomenal job! We had 45 attendees to include members of the community!

In honor of National Poetry Month, reminisce on youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem, “The Hill We Climb,” which she performed during President’s Biden inauguration. Target 5: Global Impact Chairman: Soror Edith Bartley Co-Chairman: Soror Karen Ford-Jackson Sorority Goal: To conduct a large-scale community service project that reaches across regions, borders, and oceans; to collect 500,000 shoes for Soles4Souls, 50,000 eyeglasses for Lions Club International, as well as 50,000 dresses for girls and 25,000 shirts for boys for the Pillowcase Project; to support 10,000 refugees of color through partnerships with organizations engaged in the work.

On March 19th, Target 5 hosted a watch party for the documentary film, Human Flow, which spotlighted the current global refugee crisis. Before the movie, Soror Edith Bartley facilitated a discussion with guest speaker, Nezia Munezero Kubwayo, a former refugee and consultant for the African Community Center. Approximately 14 sorors attended this profound event.

Lastly, please continue supporting our 1 Child @ a Time Campaign to help refugee children through the African Community Center (ACC). Click here for more details. This campaign is ongoing through December 31, 2021. All virtual donations should be purchased from the Amazon Wish List, or send items to ACC via Instacart. On April 9th, Target 5 invites you to celebrate Global Impact Day with our Sorority. We will be sending masks to our adopted shelters, as well as posting information about COVID-19 on our social media pages.

l Soror Clarissa Pearson, daughter of Soror Gaynelle Pearson (formerly a member of ZCO) and niece of Soror Melanie Pearson Hurley, became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on March 10th due to complications from Sickle Cell Disease. Answers to Your Top Ten Burning Questions About Processing Payments 1. You know me, soror! Does it really matter how I write my name?

Yes, it matters. If you change your name because of marriage or an un-coupling, spell it differently, or use a hyphen; we need to know. Please make sure that you update your name at the Corporate, Regional and Chapter level - same name - all three places consistently…and don’t forget to be consistent with the hyphen.

2. I mailed my payment. Why am I not on the roster/registered for the event yet?

The Pecunious Grammateus and the Tamiouchos each have a week to process payments. Once each of these processes has been completed, the payment is then sent to the appropriate committee or to Corporate. Then, of course, they need time to record the payment in accordance with their processes. A good rule of thumb is to mail payments three weeks in advance of the due date to ensure timely posting of dues, in order not to incur late fees and to avoid any interruption in your active status.

3. Is it ok for my Honey-Do or another family member to make a payment for me?

Of course! Payments sent on a check from a business account or a family member’s account are acceptable. However, please note on the memo line to whom the payment should be credited. If we are unable to match the name on the check with the name of a member, the payment may be returned.

4. I’ll be paying for my Legacy. Is that ok?

Of course! Please make one payment for both amounts due and notate on the check how much is to be applied to each soror. Or, if it’s more convenient, write two checks and send them in one envelope. The same notes should be added to payments made via Pay Pal. 5. Is the PayPal fee included in my dues/event registration payment?

Unfortunately, the PayPal service fee is not included in the dues/event registration payment. When making a payment using PayPal, please add the service fee to the amount of the payment. The Chapter will not assume the responsibility for non-payment of the service fee. Moreover, any dues payment made via PayPal that does not include the service fee will be delayed until the payment is made complete.

However, we’ve heard your concerns about the service fee. We are currently researching electronic payment alternatives that provide a convenient and more economical way to make payments.

6. Why does it take sooooo long for payments to be received if sent via Snail Mail (the United States Post Office?

Please remember that the same delay you experience with your mail at home, the Chapter is experiencing as well.

With the pandemic creating delays in almost every facet of community business, we must be patient and do what we can to work with what we have. Then, of course, three officers will touch your payment during the recording process. Considering the safety measures in place and the time it takes mail to arrive, it just takes time.

After the three Chapter officers record and process your payment in accordance with the Bylaws, the payment is then sent to our Corporate Office. As you know, the Corporate Office is servicing not only graduate chapters but undergraduate chapters. As wonderful as we are, we are not always first. We usually give the Corporate Office four weeks to process payments and forms.

8. Why does it take so long for me to receive a reply from the Chapter?

When you send any correspondence to Chapter officers, and especially if the correspondence relates to a financial matter, be sure to include updated contact information. It is helpful to include your last name and a current phone number. This will allow us to contact you sooner and solve any issues more expeditiously.

9. Ok, I hear you. I’ve read your questions and answers but is there anything you can do to speed things up?

Per our Chapter Bylaws, the process of recording a payment or processing transfer/verifications forms is: Epistoleus->Pecunious Grammateus->Tamiouchos->Corporate ->(finally) Roster. With the pandemic affecting how and how frequently we are able to go places and meet people, we continue working to fine-tune the process. We’ve tried to adapt how we do things to minimize how often we meet. We’ve tried establishing virtual procedures. Until we find a more effective and safe process, we ask that you adopt some of the tips and hints listed above.

10. Lastly, please remember that, like you, everyone involved in the process of getting your payment properly recorded is juggling a hectic life right now. The pandemic heaped new norms on all of us, from teleworking and home schooling to dealing with health and well-being issues. Please trust that we are doing all we can to record your payment in a timely manner.

Soror Kirston Hardley Soror Kirston J. Hardley currently resides in Alexandria, VA. She was initiated in 2000 into the Beta Gamma Chapter, at the University of West Florida, Pensacola, FL. She was previously a member of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter. Soror Kirston enjoys creating custom sorority memorabilia, event decorating, and being a hostess. She is currently employed by the Federal Government. She is involved with the “Blacks in Government” and is certified in Diversity and Inclusion Dialogue. She was awarded the 2018 Department of Homeland Security Secretary’s Award.

Soror Vernita Pryor-Holifield Soror Vernita was invited to join our Chapter by Soror Naomi Fauntleroy. She was initiated in 1974 into the Alpha Eta Chapter at Virginia Union University. She is originally from Washington, DC and currently resides in Ft. Washington, MD. Soror Vernita has been married 26 years to Honey-Do, John. She has one son (Brian Pryor), and four grandkids. Soror Vernita is retired from the Federal Government and United States Army. She is currently the Trustee at New Canaan Baptist Church, Washington, DC. She enjoys reading, event planning, and jigsaw puzzles.

Soror Cherice Teal Soror Cherice was initiated in Spring 1995 into the Alpha Chi Chapter at North Carolina Central University and is a Silver Star jewel! She currently resides in Largo, MD and is originally from Laurinburg, North Carolina. Soror Cherice is a Senior Division Philanthropy Officer at the American Red Cross National Headquarters. She is a member of New Life Church in Laurel, MD, and she volunteers as a mentor with the BEST Kids nonprofit organization. Soror Cherice is a Title Insurance Producer Independent Contractor and business owner. She enjoys playing tennis, learning new vegan recipes, and challenging herself with her newest passion - Hip Hop Step Aerobics.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE (con't) Soror Shiresse Morgan Brewington Soror Shiresse resides in Upper Marlboro, MD and is from Richmond, VA. She was encouraged to join Zeta Chi Omega by Soror Ade’Leaka Gore. Soror Shiresse was initiated into Alpha Chi Chapter at North Carolina Central University, in Durham, NC. Soror Shiresse is a licensed Clinical Social Worker and a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Soror Shiresse is a very active person and works out daily. Soror Shiresse was also the first African American cheerleader selected to become a member of the Washington Capitals Red Rockers!

Soror Donna Cole Soror Donna was initiated in Zeta Chi Omega Chapter in 1991. She was asked to rejoin the Chapter by Soror Carolyn Rowe. She currently resides in Upper Marlboro, MD and is originally from Clermont, FL. She is a Silver Star jewel! Soror Donna works for CIBC National Trust Company and is a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. Soror Donna enjoys traveling and reading.

Soror Evelyn Lowery Soror Evelyn resides in Dumfries, VA and is originally from Hyattsville, MD. She recently relocated back to the United States from Germany and was invited by Soror Domonique to attend a virtual Chapter meeting. Soror Evelyn was initiated in 2013 into Eta Pi Omega Chapter, in El Paso, TX. Soror Evelyn is married with 3 children. She works for the Federal Government and is a member of the First Baptist Church of Glenarden. Soror Evelyn enjoys reading, cooking, traveling, mentoring and spending time with family.

Greetings sorors, Happy Spring! The Standards Committee would like to provide you with the status of several ongoing efforts under its purview.

Standards Committee Evaluation Process for 2021 The Standards Committee Evaluation Team (SCET) has updated the program and evaluation activities process for virtual events, as follows:

1. SCET and committee chairman identify upcoming activity. (Committee chairman should

communicate to SCET via evaluation@aka-zco.org and copy standards@aka-zco.org)

2. SCET provides survey link to committee chairman five (5) days prior to event.

3. Committee chairman tests survey link and sends an email to SCET if there is an issue; SCET will

resolve issue and provide an updated survey link.

4. Committee chairman should announce at the beginning and at the end of the event that the survey

link is in the chat window. Committee chairman and/or Technology Committee will provide total

number of participants to SCET.

5. SCET compiles survey responses and sends results to committee chairman, Basileus and Standards

Committee Chairman ten (10) days post event.

6. Committee chairman should share results with committee members and determine if any changes

are needed to improve future events.

7. Standards Committee presents survey summary results quarterly to Chapter members.

Zeta Chi Omega History Maker and Ivy Beyond the Wall,

Soror Naomi Brooks

Soror Naomi Lewis Brooks was born on April 14, 1934, the oldest of five children of James and Eunice Quander Lewis.

She attended Alexandria Public Schools, graduating from Parker Gray High School. While at Parker Gray, she played forward on the girls’ basketball team and earned the school record for most points scored in a season and the most points scored in a single game. That record stood until the school closed in 1965. After high school, she went to Virginia State College, now Virginia State University, becoming the first in her family to graduate from college.

In 1955, she married her college sweetheart and fellow Alexandrian, Leo Brooks, then a second lieutenant in the Army.

Thus, began her life as a military wife, which included moving often and holding a variety of different jobs. She was primarily a teacher, teaching at Charles Houston Elementary before her marriage and at Cora Kelly and Lynbrook Elementary Schools during one of their tours in the Washington Metro Area as a military wife. In between those jobs, she taught a General Education Development course for soldiers at the Army Education Center in Alaska and worked as a remedial reading clinician at Central State College in Ohio.

While Leo was stationed in California, Soror Naomi served on the allocations committee of the Greater Sacramento United Way, served on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Chapter of the American Red Cross and as its Director of Volunteer Training, and as a Director of the Sacramento Area Blood Bank.

As her husband moved up through the world 28 times yet Soror Naomi oversaw Officers’ Wives Clubs, was coordinator, chapel and church superintendent, president of the African American president), and women's golf leagues where she was of one of them. During all of this, she ly complete her Masters’ Degree which and finally finished back at Virginia Philadelphia, Soror Naomi served as Execresidence for 75 young adult women from to study or begin work experience,

The Virginia Theological Seminary bestows this honor on an individual in recognition of “…outstanding leaders who embody their baptismal vows to strive for justice and peace among all people…” She is among a group of distinguished past recipients that includes The Honorable Madeleine Albright and Barbara Bush Soror Naomi and Leo were blessed with three children, two boys and a girl. Their daughter, Marquita is an attorney in Washington, DC. Their sons, who went into the military like their father and their ancestors before them, also became generals, making the Brooks family the first African American family with three generals. Leo, Sr. and Leo, Jr. retired as Brigadier Generals; Vincent retired as a four-star general.

Soror Naomi joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® while a student at Virginia State College. Along with all her other activities, she made time to join chapters in the places where they were stationed over the years. She joined Zeta Chi Omega when she returned to the Northern Virginia Area after General Brooks retired. She sang with the choir and served on several committees over the years. She had attained the status of Pearl Soror at the time she became an Ivy Beyond the Wall on May 21, 2020.

The community where she grew up voted overwhelmingly to name a school in her honor in 2021. The former Maury Elementary School in Alexandria will be renamed Naomi Lewis Brooks Elementary School, a tribute to the extraordinary life of this remarkable woman.

ZCO CALENDAR Sorors, Let’s Get Organized for 2021!

Meetings, events, programs, oh my! With so many exciting Zeta Chi Omega occasions to attend, wouldn’t it be helpful if you could see everything in one place? Now you can! Introducing the newly populated Zeta Chi Omega chapter calendar, available in the “Members Only” section of our chapter website.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE CHAPTER CALENDAR? There are two ways to view the calendar.

From the Wild Apricot Mobile Application 1) Download the “Wild Apricot for Members” mobile application from Apple’s App Store or Google Play.

From the Chapter’s Website 1) Go to www.zetachiomega.wildapricot.com and log in with your member credentials.

2) Under the Members Only tab, select “Chapter Calendar.”

2) Log in using your member credentials. These credentials will be the same as what you use to access the Members Only portion of the chapter website.

3) Once you are logged in, go to the “Events” button at the bottom of the application. There, you can view upcoming chapter events.

4) If you see an event that is relevant to you, select “Add to calendar” and the event will be duplicated onto your personal phone’s calendar. Note that registration via Wild Apricot is not enabled for most events, but this does not prevent you from saving the event to your phone’s calendar.

HOW FREQUENTLY IS THE CALENDAR UPDATED? The calendar is updated on a weekly basis. If you have submitted an event to appear in the Ivyette or Rose Petal, your event will appear on the Chapter’s calendar within 24 hours of publication of these communications.
