Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira wurde 1933 in Matosinhos, Portugal geboren und gilt dort als der Hauptvertreter der Moderne. In Porto studierte er Architektur an der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Porto, wo er auch lehrt und immer noch lebt. Er begann nach dem Studium, in dem Büro seines Professors Fernando Távora zu arbeiten und betreibt seit 1958 sein Architekturbüro. Für den Wiederaufbau des Lissaboner Alstadtviertels Chiado 1988 erhielt Avaro Siza 1992 den Pritzker-Preis. In Siza‘s Arbeit erkennt man die Entwicklung der Moderne wieder. Er geht sensibel mit der gegebenen Umgebung und Stadtarchitektur um, so dass seine Architektur der Natur zu entspringen scheint. Er reduziert seine Formen auf Geometrien und kreiert so eine Klarheit, die dadurch aufgebrochen wird, dass im Innenraum komplexe Knotenpunkte und spannende nutzbare Freiräume entstehen. So sind scheinbar einfach überlagerte Kuben, innerlich bewusst und komplex genutzt.

Die Rationalität mit der er die Kuben segmentiert, machen seine Gebäude zu Figuren.

Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira was born in 1933 in Matosinhos, Portugal, where he is considered the main representative of modernity.

He studied architecture in Porto at the Faculty of Cultural Studies of the University of Porto, where he also teaches and still lives. After his studies, he began working in the office of his professor Fernando Távora and has been running his architectural practice since 1958. In 1988 Avaro Siza was awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1992 for the reconstruction of Lisbon‘s Chiado district. Siza‘s work reflects the development of modernism. He deals sensitively with the given environment and urban architecture, so that his architecture seems to emanate from nature. He reduces his forms to geometries, creating a clarity that is broken up by the fact that complex junctions and exciting usable open spaces are created in the interior. Thus are apparently simply superimposed cubes, inwardly conscious and used in a complex way.

The rationality with which he segments the cubes turns his buildings into figures.

Inspiriert von Alvaro Siza‘s Architektur und Bauweise, erstellten wir vier Indexmodelle. Bei diesen Modelle behandelten wir die drei Prinzipien Siza‘s: Einfachheit Rationalität Komplexität So nutzten wir verschiedene Geometrien, die wir sensibel miteinander verknüpften und dabei komplexe Räume mit spannenden Knotenpunkten enstehen ließen. Die äußere Hülle gibt keine Hinweise auf das, was im Inneren passiert und ist simpel gehalten.

Durch die getätigten Analysen, fingen wir an mit verschiedenen Kuben zu arbeiten, mit Höhen und Blickachsen zu spielen und das Raumgefühl spürbar zu machen. Zwei der vier Indexmodelle verdeutlichen die Werte Siza‘s dabei besonders gut, mit welchen wir für das finale Modell weiterarbeiteten. Bei diesen Modellen achteten wir besonders auf Hauptraum und Restfläche, sodass wir als nächsten Schritt versuchten, beide Komponenten nutzbar zu machen (s. 02.02.).

Besonders gut gefallen bei Alvaro Siza‘s Architektur, hat uns die skulpturale Nutzung der Treppe und sein Spiel mit Blickachsen über verschiedenen Ebenen, welche wir dann in Indexmodell 1 (02.01) anwendeten.

Inspired by Alvaro Siza‘s architecture and construction, we created four index models. For these models we dealt with Siza‘s three principles: Simplicity Rationality Complexity Thus we used different geometries, which we sensitively linked with each other, creating complex spaces with exciting intersections. The outer shell gives no indication of what is happening inside and is kept simple.

Through the analyses we made, we began to work with different cubes, playing with heights and lines of sight and making the feeling of space perceptible. Two of the four index models illustrate Siza‘s values particularly well, which we continued to work with for the final model. With these models we paid special attention to the main room and the remaining area, so that we tried to make both components usable as a next step (see 02.02.).

We especially liked Alvaro Siza‘s architecture, the sculptural use of the staircase and his play with lines of sight over different levels, which we then applied in index model 1 (02.01).

Das Entwurfskonzept für einen Raum inspiriert durch Alvaro Siza sollte auf Komplexität basieren und Einfachheit ausstrahlen. Dementsprechend spielten wir mit den Formen aus den Indexmodellen 1 und 2 und begannen mit vier Kuben zu experimentieren. Dabei sollte eine nutzbarer Restraum und ein skulpturales Treppenhaus, welches die verschiedenen Ebenen verknüpft, entstehen.

Bei dem ganzen Prozess versuchten wir sensibel und mit Raumgefühl interessante Knotenpunkte zu kreieren.

Als eigene Interpretation Siza‘s Bauweise verschoben wir einen den vier Kuben in der Höhe und ließen ihn den Raum schneiden.

Es ergaben sich verschiedene Verknüpfungsmöglichkeiten, wobei wir die Verschneidungen und Raumkonzepte der Indexmodelle in den Fokus stellten und so unsere Analysen aufgreiften.

Der entstehende Restraum ist der eigentliche „Hauptraum“ des Modells, da sich dort alle Sichtachsen treffen und eine starke Bewegung in und aus den Raum entsteht. Der „Restraum“ wird also zum öffentlich nutzbaren Raum, den man von außen nicht erahnen kann und trotzdem einer der wichtigsten Bestandteile des Konzeptes darstellt.

The design concept for a room inspired by Alvaro Siza should be based on complexity and radiate simplicity. Accordingly, we played with the forms from index models 1 and 2 and started experimenting with four cubes. The aim was to create a usable residual space and a sculptural staircase linking the different levels.

Throughout the whole process we tried to create interesting intersections with sensitivity and a sense of space. create.

As our own interpretation of Siza‘s construction, we moved one of the four cubes in height and let it cut the space.

This resulted in various possibilities for linking the cubes, whereby we focused on the intersections and spatial concepts of the index models and thus took up our analyses.

The resulting residual space is the actual „main space“ of the model, as all visual axes meet there and a strong movement in and out of the space is created. The „residual space“ thus becomes a publicly usable space that cannot be guessed at from the outside and yet is one of the most important components of the concept.

Der Eingang des Raumes liegt also auf Seiten der Treppe und man hat hier wie bei Alvaro Siza`s Architektur die Wahlmöglichkeit, wie man den Raum erfährt und durchquert. Aus diesem Grund ist das Durchschreiten für jeden eine persönliche Wahrnehmung und Erlebnis, welche durch die immer neuen und verschiedenen Blick- und Bewegungsachsen entsteht.

Die Fensteröffnungen lassen Blicke in den Innenraum zu, die man von außen nicht erkennt und gleichzeitig unterschiedliche Sichten nach Außen ermöglichen.

Das Hochschieben eines Kubus erzeugte den Effekt einer Galerie, welche den Blick von oben in den Innenraum unten möglich machte. Gleichzeitig entstehen dadurch im Innenraum unten eine neue Raumwirkung und spannende Ecken.

Durch gezielt gesetzte Sichtachsen und spannende Knotenpunkte, lässt sich das rationale Format unseres Entwurfes erleben.

The entrance to the space is thus on the side of the stairs and, as in Alvaro Siza‘s architecture, one has the choice of how one experiences and crosses the space. For this reason, walking through is a personal perception and experience for everyone, which is created by the ever new and different axes of vision and movement.

The window openings allow views into the interior that cannot be seen from the outside and at the same time allow different views to the outside.

Sliding up a cube created the effect of a gallery, which made it possible to look into the interior from above and into the interior below. At the same time, this creates a new spatial effect and exciting corners in the interior below.

The rational format of our design can be experienced through purposefully set visual axes and exciting junctions.

Das Gebäude weist insgesamt eine gewisse Klarheit auf und lenkt deswegen nicht von der eigentlichen Komplexität ab.

Durch die gesetzten Öffnungen wird ein spannendes Lichtspiel erzeugt. Der geschlossene Komplex wirkt dadurch offener und es entsteht kein Gefühl der Enge. Die Lichter leiten einen durch den Raum und es entsteht ein kontinuierlicher Durchgang durch den Raum.

Man steht nie im Dunkeln, da man immer Richtung Helligkeit blickt oder sogar geht.

Während im Inneren durch sensible Knotenpunkte, spannende Lichtspiele und komplexe Einschneidungen die Prinzipien Alvaro Siza`s spürbar werden, sieht man von außen ein klares, einfaches und Interesse weckendes Gebäude.

Genau wie bei Siza wird der Raum zu einer skulpturalen Figur.

Scheinbar Privates, nicht Sichtbares wird zu öffentlichen, nutzbaren Räumen und das Offensichtliche rückt in den Hintergrund.

The building as a whole has a certain clarity and therefore does not distract from its actual complexity.

An exciting play of light is created by the set openings. The closed complex thus appears more open and there is no feeling of confinement. The lights guide you through the room and there is a continuous passage through the room.

You are never standing in the dark, because you are always looking or even walking towards the brightness.

While inside you can feel Alvaro Siza‘s principles through sensitive junctions, exciting plays of light and complex incisions, from the outside you see a clear, simple and interesting building.

Just like Siza, the room becomes a sculptural figure.

Apparently private, invisible things become public, usable spaces and the obvious recedes into the background.

In our design process, the focus shifted to the interplay between inside and outside, with the task of designing a habitable house from our space.

The process of designing a building by Alvaro Siza arises „from line to space“. The resulting geometries on paper develop into spatial and living boundaries, which are continuously recognisable in the materiality and external appearance.

Siza leaves nothing to chance, but integrates its geometries into the surroundings. Architecture and environment interact with each other and create a new experience, passage and sense of space. Both the exterior and the interior have an influence on the language of form and the set alignment, viewing angles, etc.

The building itself is a sculpture in the style of Alvaro Siza. The proportions, incisions and junctions form a harmonious structure, which creates exciting „residual spaces“ and interplay between the levels. This individuality is characteristic of Siza.

In unserem Entwurfsprozess verschob sich, mit der Aufgabe ein bewohnbares Haus aus unserem Raum zu gestalten, der Fokus auf das Zusammenspiel von Innen und Außen.

Der Prozess des Entwerfens eines Gebäudes von Alvaro Siza entsteht „from line to space“ / von der Linie zum Raum. Die entstandenen Geometrien auf dem Papier entwickeln sich zu Raum- und Wohngrenzen, die kontinuierlich in der Materialität und dem äußeren Erscheinungsbild zu erkennen sind.

Siza überlässt nichts dem Zufall, sondern baut seine Geometrien in die Umgebung ein. Architektur und Umgebung wirken zusammen und schaffen ein neues Erleben, Durchschreiten und Raumgefühl. Sowohl der Außenraum als auch der Innenraum haben Einfluss auf die Formsprache und gesetzte Fluchten, Blickwinkel, etc.

Das Gebäude selbst ist eine Skulptur, ganz im Stile Alvaro Sizas. Die Proportionen, Einschnitte und Knotenpunkte bilden ein harmonisches Gefüge, welche spannende „Resträume“ und Zusammenspiele der Ebenen erzeugen. Diese Individualität ist charakteristisch für Siza.

The property, which we were to build on, is situated in a very green valley between a spur of the river Aa and the ancient city wall.

The main road leads directly past the property, but is hardly noticeable due to the many trees.

With the basic principles from phase 1 we designed a house for retreat as well as for public communication. The variously cut cubes and the resulting residual space create a tour that runs through various concepts.

The concepts should enable a harmonious life of work, rest and presentation. An extroverted as well as an introverted lifestyle is made possible.

This is to take place in interaction with the expectations and lifestyle of the resident and his or her small family.

The basic principle of the intersection of the individual cubes allows for quiet retreats and light spaces for interaction.

Das Grundstück, welches wir bebauen sollte, liegt in einem sehr begrüntem Tal zwischen einem Ausläufer der Aa und der ehmanligen Stadtmauer.

Die Hauptstraße führt unmittelbar an dem Grundstück vorbei, ist aber durch die vielen Bäume kaum zu spüren.

Mit den Grundprinzipien aus Phase 1 entwarfen wir ein Haus sowohl zum Zurückziehen als auch zur öffentlichen Kommunikation. Die verschieden verschnittenen Kuben und der dadurch entstandene Restraum, ergeben einen Rundgang, der verschiedene Konzepte durchläuft.

Die Konzeptionen sollen ein harmonischens Leben aus Arbeiten, Ruhe und Präsentation ermöglichen.

Sowohl ein extrovertierter als auch ein introvertierter Lebensstil werden ermöglicht. Dies soll im Zusammenspiel mit den Erwartungen und der Lebensweise des Bewohners und seiner kleinen Familie geschehen.

Das Grundprinzip der Verschneidung der einzelnen Kuben, ermöglicht ruhige Rückzugsorte und lichte Räume zur Interaktion.

Der städtebauliche Kontext zeigt auf der Nordseite den öffentlichen Zugang, der als Haupteingang dient. Von der Hauptstraße gelangt man über eine private Straße zu dem erhöht gelegenen Nachbargebäude und unserem am Hang gelegenen Künstlerhaus.

Den Besitzern wird die Möglichkeit gegeben, über einen weiteren privaten Fußweg entlang der Aa auf dem Grundstück zum Haus zu gelangen.

Ausgerichtet ist das Wohnhaus nach unseren Prinzipien der Möglichkeit des Zurückziehens. Die Terasse ist angelehnt an den Hang und bietet so eine versteckte Ruhezone in der Natur. Währenddessen bilden die anderen Teile des Gebäudes ein öffentlicheres Zusammenspiel mit Blick auf das weite Grundstück und den Bach der Aa. Hier ist das besondere Zusammenspiel des äußeren und inneren Raumes zu erkennen und wollen damit zurückkommen auf die Prinzipien Alvaro Sizas, das Gebäude in die Natur einzubinden.

Seitlich geschützt, auf der einen Seite durch die Stadtmauer, auf der anderen durch den aufsteigenden Hang, kann der Bewohner seine Kreativität ausleben.

Da alle Kuben sich in einem Punkt schneiden und ihren Ursprung finden, bildet sich eine Achse. Sie bildet den Drehpunkt, der die Entscheidung zwischen Zurückziehen und Kommunikation / Privatem und Öffentlichen ermöglicht.

Das Gebäude und die Landschaft ermöglichen äußerlich nicht, einmal ums Gebäude herum zu gehen.

Dieser „Rundgang“ ist nur im Inneren des Gebäudes möglich, wobei auch erstmals der äußerlich nicht sichtbare Restraum in Erscheinung tritt.

The urban context shows on the north side the public entrance, which serves as the main entrance. From the main street, a private road leads to the elevated neighbouring building and our artists‘ house on the slope.

The owners are given the opportunity to access the house via another private footpath along the Aa river on the property.

The house is designed according to our principles of the possibility of retreat. The terrace is leaned against the slope and thus offers a hidden quiet zone in the nature. Meanwhile, the other parts of the building form a more public interplay with views of the wide plot and the stream of the Aa. Here the special interplay of outer and inner space can be seen, and with this we want to come back to Alvaro Siza‘s principles of integrating the building into nature.

Protected on one side by the city wall and on the other by the rising slope, the inhabitants can live out their creativity.

As all cubes intersect at one point and find their origin, an axis is formed. It forms the fulcrum that enables the decision between retreat and communication / private and public.

The building and the landscape do not make it possible to walk around the building.

This „walk around“ is only possible inside the building, whereby for the first time the remaining space, not visible from the outside, also appears.

Beginnt man seinen „Rundgang“ durchs Gebäude beim Haupteingang, gelangt man über die Galerie in das eigene Atelier und den Ausstellungsraum.

Der Blick von der Galerie ermöglicht durch die Klarheit des Raumes das innere Gefühl des Ankommens. Hier meint man noch nicht im Bereich des Wohnens zu sein. Das Spiel mit den Höhen spiegelt die Landschaft wider und macht das körperliche Erleben des Raumes möglich.

Durch eine riesige Glasfront, ist nun auch der Restraum zu erkennen. Es gibt verschiedene Blickachsen durch den Raum, die gleichzeitig auch Wege in die Wohnbereiche des Hauses bieten.

Der helle Wohn- und Essbereich wird bloß durch den eingeschobenen Kubus gegliedert. In diesen introvertiertesten Raum gelangt man über eine Treppe, die sich zum Atelier hin öffnet. Lichtquellen und Kommunikation mit der Natur ist hier nur durch Oberlichter gegeben. Eine Galerie ermöglicht den Kontakt zum Wohnen und Leben.

Die Fenster im Hauptraum sind so angeordnet, dass sie sowohl Blicke in die Natur als auch in den Verbindungsraum/ Restraum und durch ihn auch in das Atelier ermöglichen.

Die dadurch entstehende Skulptur im Inneren schafft Leben und Wohnen genauso wie eine Verbindung zur umliegenden Landschaft.

If you start your „tour“ through the building at the main entrance, you will enter your own studio and exhibition room via the gallery. The view from the gallery, through the clarity of the room, allows the inner feeling of arrival. Here one does not yet think one is in the living area. The play with the heights reflects the landscape and makes the physical experience of the room possible.

Through a huge glass front, the rest of the room is now also visible. There are different lines of sight through the room, which at the same time offer ways into the living areas of the house.

The bright living and dining area is only structured by the inserted cube. One enters this most introverted room via a staircase that opens up to the studio. Light sources and communication with nature are only provided here by skylights. A gallery allows contact with living and living.

The windows in the main room are arranged in such a way that they allow views into nature as well as into the connecting room/remaining room and through it also into the studio.

The resulting sculpture inside creates life and living as well as a connection to the surrounding landscape.
