John Josephine Hagerty House_1938 Walter Gropius (1883-1969) Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) Das Wohngebäude befindet sich als „box on the rocks“ auf einer Landzunge unmittelbar am Atlantik in Cohassat, MA. Es ist geprägt von Reduziertheit und stellt eines der ersten Gebäude des „International Styles“ Bewegung dar.
The building is placed in Cohassat, MA as a „box on the rocks“ on a headland right next to the Atlanitc ocean. It is characterised by simplisity and is one of the first buildings of the „international style“ movement. 3

A walk through the building allows to capture the atmosphere: the directedness of the social rooms, narrowness of the corridors and stairs, the conection of the building, the landscape and the interaction of the materials.

This index modell illustrates the interaction of the used materials.
Zum Schutz vor Brandung und Witterung wurde im Erdgeschoss vorwiegend massiver, localer Bruchstein verwendet. Im Gegensatz dazu wurde der obere Teil des Gebäudes mit einer vertikalen weißen Holzvertäfelung verkleidet. Es entsteht ein Kontrast zwischen dem rustikalen, groben, dunklen Naturstein und dem hellen, glatten Holz. Die Steinmauer schlingt sich nahezu intuitiv jedoch präzise um das Gebäude.
The house is mainly builded out of natural stone to protect from weather and the surge of waves. In contrast to that the upper part of the building is coverd with white wood panels. This effects a contrast between the rustical, rough, dark natural stone and the bright even wood. The stone wall is surrounding the building intuitive but is still precise connected.

The main rooms of the building are conducted by an U-form.
Nur die U-Form der Garage ist zur Straße hin geöffnet und empfängt den Besucher. Die darauffolgende U-Form des Gartens lässt den Blick in die entgegengesetze Richtung schwenken. Alle nachfolgenden Räume, wie das Wohnzimmer, das Arbeitszimmer, die Sonnenterasse und die Balkone richten den Blick zum Atlantik.
Only the U-form of the garage is directed to the street and welcomes the visitors. The following Uform of the court yard turns around in the other direction. All the rooms below like the living room, the working room, the sun deck and the balconys enable looks to the Atlantic ocean.

Durch Mauern werden Außenräume eingefasst und nicht überdachte Flächen werden als Innenraum wahrgenommen. Innenräume mit großen Glasfronten sind stark nach Außen gerichtet. Es befinden sich zahlreiche Eingänge im Erdgeschoss und ersten Obergeschoss.
Walls are catching the outdoor rooms and make them feel like inside rooms. Indoor rooms with big glas windows are directed to the Atlantic ocean. The building has a lot entrences in the first and second floor.

Das Haus in Amagi von Atelier Cube wurde 2011 von Masahiro Kiyohara und Yuka Matsuyama in Fukuoka (Japan) erbaut. Das Haus ist geprägt von Offenheit und hoher Flexibilität der Räume. In dem gesamten Gebäude gibt es keine Türen, nur Wandöffnungen, die Räume formal voneinander trennen. Die Räume sind zwar im Grundriss festgelegt, jedoch akustisch und visuell nicht voneinander getrennt. Um eine Privatheit der Schlafräume zu erziehen werden diese auf Emporen nach oben gelegt und sind nur über Leitern zu erreichen. Lediglich das Badezimmer verfügt über eine Schiebetür. Wohnelemente bestehen aus Holz und stehen wie die Küche als Block im Raum. Insgesammt verschwimmen die Kategorien der einzelnen Räume ineinander und es entsteht eine sehr freie Grundrissnutzbarkeit. 12
Atelier Cubes House of Amagi was constructet in Fukuoka (Japan) from Masahiro Kiyohara and Yuka Matsuyama in 2011. The house is characterised by wide openness and high flexibily of the rooms. In the whole building aren‘t any doors only huge openings in the wall to seperate the different areas. The areas are not acustical and visuell seperated from each other this goes with the huge flexibility and the wide openess. Private areas are located upwards and are only reachable by ladders. Only the bathroom has a sliding door to get privacy. Wood blocks are the only furniture in the building. In the House of Amagi the categories and utilizations of the room areas are overlapping this caused the high flexibility.

Als Weiterentwicklung des Josephine Hagerty House und des House in Amagi, entsteht ein Künstlerhaus mit Wohnfläche-, Arbeits- und öffentlicher Fläche. Die verschiedenen Räume sind, wie im Hagerty House, U-formig aufgebaut und sind in verschiedene Seiten gerichtet. Im Inneren sind die Raumverbindungen durch das Haus in Amagi inspiriert. Alle Räume sind durch große Wandeinschnitte zueinander geöffnet, es gibt lediglich eine Schiebetür im Badezimmer. Es entstehen eine hohe Transparenz und Sichtbeziehungen zu allen Raumflächen, die es schafft Raumfunktionen und Nutzungen verschwimmen zu lassen.
The transformation of the Josephine Hagerty House and House of Amagi developes an artist house with living, working and public area. The various rooms are formed in an uforms and oriented to different directions like the rooms in the Hagerty House. The connections of the room areas are inspired by the House of Amagi. All the rooms are conneced with each other through wide opening in the walls. Only in the bathroom there is a slinding door to get privacy. In the lower level there are collaborative atelier areas and private areas are private areas. The atelier house gains a high transparency and flexibiltiy of the rooms and utilizations.

Wie haben die U-Form Gerichtetheit des Hagerty House aufgegriffen. Wenn ein Raum betreten wird öffnet sich dieser zu einer Seite großzügig.
The U-formed rooms are taken over from the Hagerty House. The U-shape opens the view of the peoples inside to one direction. All the rooms of the atelier house have such an u-form an orientated differently. The house has no typical tradition categorization of the rooms, its only categorized in public, collaborative and private areas. Every of the artist (composer, sculptor and photograph) has a working space in the ground level. All the ateliers are connected with each other. The spaces can be used flexible for exhibition and concerts. The private areas are located in the upper floor like they are in the House of Amagi. Ground and upper level are connected through big openings in the ceiling. The openings in the wall are minimized and there are unobservable private areas, but the rooms are still connected. Every artist can look downstairs in an working room from its room mate. Working, private room and balcony are all oriented in a different direction.
So gibt es in unserem Atelierhaus nur die Raumkategorien: öffentlich, gemeinschaftlich und privat. Jedem der drei Künstler (Komponist, Plastiker und Photograph) wird ein Arbeitsraum im Untergeschoss in direkter Verbindung zu den anderen zur Verfügung gestellt. Diese Bereiche sind flexibel nutzbar für beispielweise Ausstellungen und Konzerte. Von hier aus hat er Zugang zu seinem privaten Raum, der wie beim Haus in Amagi im Obergeschoss liegt. Hier wird die Wandöffnung minimiert und es entstehen uneinsehbare Bereiche. Die Arbeitsräume und privaten Räume der Künstler sind hierbei so verschoben, dass sich der Blick in ein Atelier eines anderen Künsters hinunter ergibt. Zusammen mit den privaten Balkonen im Obergeschoss, ergeben sich für jeden Bewohner drei Räume, die zu drei verschiedenen Himmelsrichtungen orientiert sind. 14

Dem Grundstück angepasst, verändert sich die Form des Hauses, es wird schmaler und länger. Zur Warendorferstraße hin öffnet sich der Haupteingang für Besucher des Ausstellungsraums. Das hier noch sehr schmale Gebäude verbreitert sich stufenartig nach hinten zum Außenraum mit Plastiken und Skulpturen der Künstler. Das Atelierhaus steht in unmittelbaren Kontakt zu den vorbeifahrenden Zügen und ermöglicht interessante Blicke. Der Vorbeifahrende erhält direkten Einblick in die Atelierräume und auf den Außenbereich mit den Kunstinstallationen. Außerdem haben die Künstler private Hintereingänge direkt in die Ateliers aus Richtung Süden. 20
The transformation model needs to get longer and smaler to adjust the site plan. The U-form of the exhibition room orientated to the Warendorferstraße buildings the public entrance of the building and welcomes the visitors. Stairs upward are leading the visitors to the upper atelier rooms and they can see the artist working. The open atelier rooms are directly in contact with the train tracks and offers interesting viewes. Passing trains get views into the working areas and to the outdoor spaces with art installations. The artist also have a private entrance to their ateliers from the south of the atelier house.

Today the seperation of working and living gets more indefined. In the social development the job becomes part of the personality and most people wants to live their passion . The atelier house is an example for this development and an open modern living concept. The living area functions as an source of inspiration and a place for discussing, sharing and social life. In the society of today traditional living constallations get more trasparent and open. Unusuall constellations of people and less privacy is getting more common . Rooms are getting more indefined and there is no certain category and function for the room anymore. This room areas are overlapping and causing a high flexibility. This modern living concept was the inspiration for the design of the atelier house. The building is designed for three different people who are open for the shared living. The house contains in- and outdoor spaces for private living, working and collaborating in the first place but also can be used as exhibition, sales, event areas. The areas are neither acustic not visuall seperated from each other.
