Moderne Archchitektur.

Die Klassische Moderne hat zahlreiche Ikonen hervorgebracht, von Mies van der Rohe bis Alvar Aalto setzten Architekten der Moderne Maßstäbe, die bis heute gültig sind. „Analysis regained“ hinterleuchtet diese Archritekten und ihre Arbeit um Raum, Fläche und Komposition zu verstehen.

Modern architecture.

Classical Modernism has produced numerous icons, from Mies van der Rohe to Alvar Aalto, modern architects set standards that are still relevant today.

“Analysis regained” shows these architectural works in order to understand space, areas and compositions.

Luis Barragán (1902-1988) wurde in Guadalajara, Mexiko, geboren. In den 1920er Jahren reiste er nach Frankreich und Spanien, lebte 1931 für einige Zeit in Paris und nahm an Vorträgen von Le Corbusier teil. Seine Zeit in Europa und später in Marokko weckte das Interesse an der Architektur Nordafrikas und des Mittelmeerraums, die er mit dem Bauen im eigenen Land verband.

Sein Architekturbüro befand sich von 1927 bis 1936 in Guadalajara, bis er nach Mexiko-Stadt zog, wo er bis zu seinem Tod blieb. Sein Werk wurde als minimalistisch bezeichnet, ist aber dennoch in Farbe und Textur üppig. Reine Flächen, Stuck-, Lehm-, Holz- oder Wasserwände, gelten als seine Kompositionselemente, die alle mit der Natur interagieren.

Luis Barragán (1902-1988) was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. In the 1920s, he traveled extensively in France and Spain and, in 1931, lived in Paris for a time, attending Le Corbusier‘s lectures. His time in Europe, and subsequently in Morroco, stimulated an interest in the native architecture of North Africa and the Mediterranean, which he related to construction in his own country.

His architectural practice was based in Guadalajara from 1927 until 1936 when he moved to Mexico City and remained until his death. His work has been called minimalist, but it is nonetheless sumptuous in color and texture. Pure planes, be they walls of stucco, adobe, timber, or even water, are his compositional elements, all interacting with Nature.

Barragán nannte sich selbst einen Landschaftsarchitekten und schrieb in dem Buch Contemporary Architects (Muriel Emanuel (ed.)veröffentlicht von St. Martins Press, 1980), „Ich glaube, dass Architekten Gärten entwerfen sollten, die ebenso wie die von ihnen gebauten Häuser genutzt werden können, um einen Sinn für Schönheit und den Geschmack und die Neigung zur bildenden Kunst und anderen spirituellen Werten zu entwickeln“.

Ein religiöser Mann, Barragán und sein Werk wurden sowohl als „mystisch“ als auch als gelassen beschrieben. Seine Kapelle für die Kapuziner-Sakramentarien ist ein Beweis für beide Eigenschaften. Wegen seines Interesses an Pferden entwarf er viele Ställe, Brunnen und Wassertröge, die viele dieser Eigenschaften aufweisen.

Barragán called himself a landscape architect, writing in the book, Contemporary Architects, (Muriel Emanuel (ed.)published by St. Martins Press, 1980), „I believe that architects should design gardens to be used, as much as the houses they build, to develop a sense of beauty and the taste and inclination toward the fine arts and other spiritual values“.

A religious man, Barragán and his work have been described as „mystical“ as well as serene. His chapel for the Capuchinas Sacramentarias is evidence of both qualities. Because of his interest in horses, he designed many stables, fountains and water troughs that manifest many of these same qualities.

Casa Barragán, ist das Atelier-und Wohnhaus von Luis Barragán. Gebaut im Auftag eines Kunden, zog der Architekt selber in das Haus ein, lebte und Arbeitete dort bis an sein Lebensende.

Casa Barragán, is the studio and residential house of Barragán himself. Built on behalf of a client, the architect himself moved into the house and lived there for the rest of a his life.

Während Barragáns andere Werke durch farbige Gestaltung sehr expressiv wirken, kommt die Casa Barragán sehr verschlossen daher. Die Fassade passt sich den benachbarten Gebäuden an, nur das große gekachelte Fenster lässt komplexere Architektur vermuten.

While Barragán’s other designs seem to be very expressive by their colorful composition, the Casa Barragn is very closed.The facade facing the street is adapted to the surrounding buildings, and it is only the large tiled window that suggests any special architecture.

Barragán ordnet, als Vertreter der Moderne, jedem Raum seine eigene Funktion zu. Das hat zur Folge, dass das Gebäude als eine Abfolge von Räumen und Situationen wahrgenommen wird.

Dabei erfolgt die Raumtrennung immer durch klare physische Grenzen. So ermöglicht Barragán die Inszenierung jedes einzelnen Raumes, getrennt von den angrenzenden Räumen.

As a representative of the modern, Barragán arranges each room according to its own function.

As a result, the building is perceived as a sequence of rooms and situations.The separation of rooms is always effected by physical boundaries.

Barragán enables the staging of each individual room on its own, separated from the adjoining rooms.

Begründet in Seinem christlichen Glauben versucht Barragán dem Haus seine ursprüngliche EXPLOSION Bedeutung zurückzugeben. Das Haus als Rückzugsort, so sollte es seiner Meinung nach wahrgenommen werden.

Based on his Christian faith, Barragán tries to recreate the original meaning of Housing. In his opinion, the house should be understood as a place of rest.

Um sein verschlossenes Gebäude zu belichten benutzt Barragán nur selten Fenster. Ähnlich wie Le Corbusier in seinem Convent de la Tourettenutzt Barragán indirektes Licht als Stilmittel um die in sich gekehrten Räume noch weiter von der Umwelt abzutrennen. Zudem verwendet er die Reflektion auf farbigen Wänden um in wechselenden Situationen die Stimmung des Raumes zu beeinflussen.

Barragán rarely uses windows to illuminate his shuttered building. As Corbusier did in his Convent de la Tourette, Barragán used indirect light as a tool to separate the introverted spaces from the surrounding environment, and he used reflection on coloured walls to manipulate the atmosphere of the room in changing situations.

Durch gezielt positionierte Lichtpunkte rücken weniger die hellen, als viel mehr dunkle Bereiche im Raum in den Vordergrund. Der Kontrast beider Extreme wird dem Betrachter sehr deutlich vermittelt und erzeugt das Gefühl von Geborgenheit. In diesem Zuge kann man von einer Konstuktion des Schattens sprechen.

Individually positioned spots of light are bringing less the bright but more the dark areas of the rooms to the spotlight. The contrast of both is made to emphasize the feeling of secureness. In order to this we called it a shadow construction.

Die Vision vom „Haus als Stadt“, die Ausbildung von Urbanität im Inneren eines Gebäudes, verlangt üblicherweise nach großzügigen Dimensionen.

The vision of the “house as a city”, the creation of urbanity inside a building, normally requires largescaled spaces.

Nicht so beim Moriyama Haus, das dieses Konzept mit der japanischen Tradition der Minimalwohnung verbindet. Zehn Kuben mit verschiedenen Grundflächen und Höhen sind auf einer Fläche verteilt, die nicht viel größer ist als die Parzellen der dichten Einfamilienhausstruktur der Umgebung. Die mit ihren sechs Zentimetern selbst für japanische Verhältnisse extrem dünnen tragenden Wände sind mit Stahlplatten bewehrt und erlauben so große Öffnungen. Dazwischen breitet sich eine Landschaft mit Wegen, Plätzen und Nischen aus, die auf allen Seiten ohne Barriere in die öffentlichen Gassen des Viertels fließt. In den Boxen finden fünf kompakte, zwischen 16–30 m2 kleine, zum Teil gestapelte Miet- wohnungen Platz, jede mit eigenem Garten, plus die dislozierte Wohnung des Hausherrn, der seine verstreuten Funktionssolitäre, wie Bad und Küche, nur über Außenräume erreicht. Landschaft, Stadt und Haus werden ununterscheidbar.

This is not the situation of the Moriyama House, which brings the Japanese tradition of minimal housing. Ten different cubes with various floor areas and heights spread loosely over an area which is not larger than the parcels of a dense family house. The walls, are extremely thin even

by Japanese standards, they are reinforced with steel plates and thus allow large cuts dividing the walls. In between, there is a landscape with paths, squares and niches spreads out, which flows on all sides without barriers into the public lanes of the quarter. In the boxes there is space for five compact rental apartments, between 16-30 m2 in size, some of them are stacked. Some with its own garden, plus the landlord’s dislocated apartment, which reaches its scattered functional solitaires, such as bathroom and kitchen. Landscape, city and house are indistinguishable.

Um das Moriyama House und seinen Architekten Ryue Nishizawa besser zu verstehen, wurde Räume und plätze, die sich im Moriyama House ergeben, näher betrachtet.

To better understand Moriyama House and its architect Ryue Nishizawa, spaces and squares that arise in Moriyama House were examined.

So erscheint der Zwischenraum, von Kubus zu Kubus nebensächlich aber wird dennoch sehr stark von Bewohnern genutzt. Beim Betrachten des Negatives wird die Wichtigkeit des Zwischenraumes deutlich. Die Masse der Zwischenräume ist nahezu identisch groß wie die Fläche der eigentlich bebautenen Flächen. Alleine durch die Präsenz steht der Zwischenraum in Konkurenz zu den Wohnkuben.

Hinzu kommt das Arrangement der einzelnen Kuben zueinander. Diese bilden mehrfach kleine Plätze und Korridore, auf denen Nutzung stattfinden kann. Die Öffnungen der Häuser stehen sich dabei nur selten gegenüber, sodass sich mögliche Blickachsen selten treffen. Auf diese Weise entstehen trotz unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft private Räume.

So the space in between single cubes seems to be marginal, but it is still used intensely by the residents. When looking at the negative, it becomes clear why the space in between is so important.

The mass of the area takes almost as much space as the positive would.

The openings of the houses themselves are only rarely crossed. This creates a feeling of privacy.

Im letzten Schritt wurden die Prinzipien der vorrausgegangenen Steps übersetzt um ein neues, geschärftes Konzept zu entwickeln.

The last step deals with the principles of previous steps wich have been translated to develop a new sharpened concept.

Der Ansatzpunkt des neuen Konzepts ist die Vermischung von Privatheit und Öffentlichkeit um den „Zwischenraum“ zu erweitern und seine Grenzen verschwimmen zu lassen.

Dabei sollen sich lediglich einzelne Boxen herausnehmen, welche nach den Prinzipien der Moderne eine privaten Raumbereich zugewiesen bekommen.

The starting point of the new concept is the mixing of privacy and publicity to expand the “space in between” and blur its boundaries.

Only individual boxes are to be taken out, which are assigned as private space according to the principles of modernity.

Trennung wird durch ein Layering von Scheiben erzeugt, das den Blick nicht stoppt, sondern durch Abflachen und spiegeln des Objekts, den Fokuspunkt des Auges verlagert.

Das Material für Decken, Böden und Boxen ist spiegelnd. Dadurch wird der Blick an Undurchsichtigen Bauteilen nicht gestoppt, sondern in eine andere Richtung weitergeleitet.

Separation is created by a layering of sheets, that do not stop the view but shift the point of interest by flattening and mirroring the object. ceilings, floors and boxes are made of reflective material. In this way, the view of nontransparent components is not stopped, but is guided to a different direction.

Der letzte Schritt, house of rhetoric, dient der Vervollständigung des Index Models um dessen Konzept in einen Entwurf zu übersetzen.

The last step called house of rhetoric is to complete the index model and translate its concept into a draft.

Das Grundstück verortet sich an der Wollbecker Straße, nahe dem Hafen. Das Grundstück an den Schienen gliedert sich somit in eines der Urbansten Viertel Münsters ein und schließt die Lücke zwischen saniertem Altbau und dem Hauptbahnhof.

Da der folgende Entwurf die Öffentlichkeit als Teil seiner selbst begreift liegt es nahe, dass seine Nutzung den selben Anspruch haben sollte.

The property is located at Wollbecker Straße, near the harbour. The property by the rails is thus integrated into one of Münster’s most urban quarters and closes the gap between the renovated old buildings and the main railway station.

Because the following design includes the public as a part of itself, it is obvious that its usage should have the same claim.

Um den Entwurf in die städtische und kulturelle Landschaft Münsters zu integrieren haben wir uns dazu entschlossen die Idee der öffentlichen Bücherstationen innerhalb von Münster aufzunehmen um auch im Süd-Osten der Stadt, von dem Projekt profitieren zu können.

In der Prominenten Lage, bildet sich dann ein Kulturelles dreieck von Skatepark, Hafenkiosk und unserem Entwurf.

In order to integrate the design into the urban and cultural landscape of Münster, we have decided to incorporate the idea of public bookstations within Münster in order to also benefit from the project in the south-east of the city.

In the prominent location, a cultural triangle of skate park, harbour kiosk and our design forms.

Die Idee des Projektes ist es, temporäres Wohnen für Kreative Köpfe zu ermöglichen. Dabei finnanziert sich das wohnen zum einen aus staatlichen Fördermaßnahmen, wie sie in vielen Städt unter „Künstlerwohnungs“ zu finden sind, und den Einnahmen aus den Ausstellungen, welche in der Ausstellung am Hang stattfinden.

The idea of the project is to enable temporary living for creative minds. The housing is financed on the one hand by state support measures, as they can be found in many cities under “artist apartments”, and on the other hand by the income from the exhibitions, which take place in the exhibition on the hillside.

Wie schon im Index Modell zuvor, macht der Entwurf den Zwischenraum als solchen zum Hauptlebensraum. Dieser lässt Grenzen verschwimmen und den, fast schon städebaulichen Entwurf, zu einem Großen ganzen wachsen. Damit erreichen wir eine Durchmischung der verschieden Bewohner, Besucher oder Kunden und spielen mit den Grenzen der Privatsphäre des Menschen selbst.

Dabei Verorten sich sich alle Arbeitsräume im Erdgeschoss, während Lebensräume ab dem 1.

Obergeschoss zu finden sind.

Sämmtliche Sanitäre Nutzungen befinden sich abgetrennt von den anderen Einheiten und werden gemeinschaftlich genutzt.

As in the Index Modell before, the design attempts to make the interspace as such the main habitat, blurring the boundaries and growing the almost town planning design into a whole in one. In this way, we achieve a mixture of the various residents, visitors or customers and play with the limits of the private sphere of the individual himself. work spaces are located on the ground floor, while living spaces can be found from the first floor onwards. All sanitary facilities are separated from the other units and are used jointly.

Aus alle dem entsteht der Eindruck von Gemeinschftlichkeint, wobei doch jeder sein eigenes, privates Haus hat.

All of this creates the impression of a community, while each has his own private residence.
