Walk with me

The first meeting when the student mentors meet their mentees

“Walk with me" is a peer-mentoring program in HKTA The Yuen Yuen Institute No.1 Secondary School aiming to help the students to raise their self-confidence and self-esteem.

On 25th September, the student mentors from "Walk with me" met their F.1 mentees during different warm-up activities. Before that, student mentors had prepared a booklet for the F.1 newcomers to familiarize them with their new school. It was wonderful to see how quickly the student mentors got on with their mentees.

TUF has a unique mission to advocate mentorship being integrated into schools and youth education in Hong Kong. Here is the opportunity for prospective graduates to participate. Jockey Club Teach Unlimited “Walk with Youth” Mentorship Programme (the “Programme”) is a school-based mentorship programme in five schools over three years starting August 2017.

The Programme not only supports the continuation and enhancement of our established and proven model at schools but also allows us to research and pilot new programmes, including new mentorship and education models such as e-Mentoring at Partner Schools.

This Programme is our first project supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It is expected that the Programme will benefit over 6,000 students with positive impact on their learning attitude, motivation, and self-esteem, a lifetime. In addition to supporting our work, the Trust’s funding enables us to develop better metrics on evaluating our programme’s effectiveness and further enhance our sustainability at the schools, building on our past track records on both. As our Partner Schools have committed to sustaining TUF programmes, our work’s impact will multiply and benefit more students for years to come.

Gigi Lung Hello! I’m Gigi Lung, a Year 1 Program Mentor at Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School. I graduated from the University of Hong Kong, majoring in China Studies and Psychology.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to volunteer at a local ministry to tutor secondary school students, and it became clear to me that socially disadvantaged students lack resources and support in our education system. I believe education is about growing students as people. As a Program Mentor, I hope to sow seeds in students’ lives, and stand by them as they grow to their full potential.

Hayley Kwok Hello, I am Hayley, a year 1-program mentor working in Tack Ching Girls’ Secondary School. I graduated from The University of Hong Kong majoring in Information Management.

I am passionate about young adults’ education. Particularly, I am interested in promoting students’ imagination, self-confidence and building literacy. I truly believe that all young people have the promise to change and can become successful in their own way. As a program mentor, I value the unique story of each student. I want to help students to refine those stories; to help them realize their potential and be proud of who they are.

01 The transformation

My former mentee, Jacky, volunteered to make an English presentation as our English Ambassador during the morning assembly. " How would you rate the challenge here for you?” " 9 out of 10. " Jacky replied. “I am afraid I would embarrass myself in front of my friends. “ Jacky’s reaction made me wondered if it was right to push him out of his comfort zone and into his panic zone?

To my surprise, Jacky's presentation was fluent and I could tell he put in lots of effort to memorize the script. HIs hard work and courage paid off. His willingness to challenge himself makes me proud and grateful to witness his transformation.

Empowering students to demonstrate their talents

I was invited by KW, an F.5 student, to join a karate class taught by him and his master. He has practiced Karate for a long time and has represented Hong Kong in several international competitions. It is his dream to participate in the Olympics. He wanted to give up his dream because he thought there wasn't any support for young Hong Kong athletes. During his class I saw a different person. He is very confident and happy when doing karate.

It was an amazing experience! If we are willing to look closer, there are always surprises from each of our students.

Operation Desk A warm welcome to TUF's new Partner Schools and Program Mentors!

This is a momentous year for TUF as we welcome Jockey Club Charities Trust as a key supporter. The Board and the team have worked very hard in preparation for the scale up of TUF’s operations. We did not take this task lightly as TUF prides itself on the quality of the people we recruit and train, to deliver effective programs, for our students.

Our growth is an ongoing process and we rely on our partners to provide feedback on how we can be better serve more students. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with you all.

Program Mentor Training Camp

The TUF training camp for new and current Program Mentors was held at Hong Kong Baptist Assembly in July 27-29, 2017.

Through icebreakers, orienteering and simulation activities, new PMs became familiar with the values and work of TUF. Sharing sessions gave Program Mentors an opportunity to connect with each other and envision their future together. In one activity, we all shared our beliefs and wrote down the reasons, which drive us to be part of TUF. During this training camp, we all felt the love, care, and support, creating a sense of belonging. The entire team felt rejuvenated to embrace the challenges and uncertainty in the coming year.

“Each youth has a dream and can learn to realize it.� The induction training focused on understanding this mission statement, and the vision and values of TUF. We were guided through training by our board members, trainers and alumni. We had training workshops on understanding the socially disadvantaged youth we intend to serve. In order to help them realize their dreams, comprehensive leadership training was conducted to help us identify our roles as program mentors and introducing us to essential leadership practices. The entire experience was like being students all over again especially during the workshop of learning how to teach English in an interactive way and effective classroom management. Throughout the month, we had constant reflection and consolidation sessions that helped us develop new insights on our personal development and develop a mindset incorporating the mentoring approach needed to effectively deliver the TUF program.

Alumni Buddy Scheme Our committee continues to grow with each graduation of Program Mentors. The fresh Year 1 Program Mentors will benefit from our new one-on-one Buddy Scheme. In the coming year, alumni aim to facilitate the fresh members’ work by being there as supporters and sharing their front-line experience.

We have structured support from alumni into two domains – supporting TUF initiatives and providing additional individual support to new Program Mentors. We bring new insight from our workplaces in education, public service, social enterprise, charity and start-ups to TUF activities like Board Game Fun Day, Dream Pursuing Day, and Human Library.
