Let's kick the semester off with Nobel Laureates

On 25 September, over 80 of our Partner School students joined “Meet the Nobel Laureates� held by UBS. Professor Bengt Holmstrom and Professor Michael Spence inspired our students by sharing their experiences on how to overcome failure. UBS volunteers were very supportive in the discussion session, encouraging students to reflect and to think positively. Thank you UBS again for having our students joining such a fun and meaningful learning event.

Our students gained valuable knowledge through this event. Here are some of their reflections: I learn to take my time to find my own talents.

I am happy I paid attention in the sharing even though it is in English I participated in the group discussion and asked questions!

Hello! This is Anson, a Year 1 Program Mentor serving in Lions College. I graduated from Lingnan University, with a major in Risk and Insurance Management.

I believe education through service is a lifelong experience, and realize TUF has provided me with a platform to contribute to society by serving youths through mentoring. My goal is to be a mentor who will put myself in the students' shoes. By understanding their needs, I can help them find their direction and develop their potential with confidence and determination.

This will be a meaningful challenging.

Welcome to DLS Radio Station Senior buddies from Buddies Program took the lead to assume responsibility and step out of their comfort zones to be DJs on the DLS Radio Station in the new school year. In this activity, our buddies received song requests and played the songs during lunchtime.

Buddies also broadcasted sharing messages from students and teachers. From the activity promotion to the execution, senior buddies put in a lot of commendable effort to produce great radio shows.

I am Yoyo. I graduated from the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.

This is my first year with Teach Unlimited Foundation (TUF). This is a big family, and being a Program Mentor is a whole new challenge for me. In TUF, we learn from each other, learn from the professionals, and learn through experiences.

Every teenager is gifted and talented; I believe my pupil would teach me many things. I look forward to working with them and learning from them in the coming years.

Student Story School-based Activities Let Mentees Challenge Themselves In mentoring sessions, I noticed student “Y” lacks confidence in learning English even though it is important to her dream of becoming a flight attendant.

The turning point came when “Y” applied for an Australian exchange program requiring a cover letter and group interview in English she worked hard writing the letter and practicing the interview. She told me she had never worked so hard on English.

Although she did not get a place in the program, she persevered and bravely knocked on the principal’s door to ask for a second chance.

Impressed by her courage, the principal agreed to let her reapply. The most important thing “Y” learned was not English skills, but confidence to take on new challenges.

Away We Go In September, students had the chance to think ahead and build meaningful relationships with their peers through the Learning Buddy Program and the Dream Pursuing Project Promotion Week.

Students were very enthusiastic during the Dream Pursuing Project Promotion Week. They actively brainstormed and wrote down the answers for their assigned questions, which were related to setting goals and finding their passion. It was very encouraging to see most of the students knew what they wanted and put effort into completing the tasks. We look forward to seeing their determination grow as their dreams slowly bloom.

Graduation Dinner for 2017 Cohort Program Mentors

The 2019 Graduation Dinner was held on 16 August to bid farewell to our 2017 Cohort of Mentors.

The evening had a “Universe” theme with different planets representing the Year-2 Partner Schools. The Program Mentors’ memories in these schools were explored throughout the dinner. The event started with an exciting warm up game which required the “graduats” Program Mentors to answer questions about their peers and TUF as quickly as possible. For example, who was the first Program Mentor to cry in front of everyone?

As dinner started, each pair of school partners was invited to share their thoughts and feelings towards each other. Some of them burst into tears during their sharing! The dinner ended with photo taking and every graduate was given a photo album as a souvenir.

Overall, it was a wonderful night full of joy and blessings! Although we shall miss them in our daily operation, we take comfort to find them actually continuing their contribution to TUF through the Alumni Community

2019 Program Mentors Induction Training August 2019

Our team of Program Mentors spent the month in an intensive induction training. We took part in discussions with professionals, and with school principals, teachers, Board members, and TUF Alumni.

These professionals guided us through the learning journey via topics, ranging from structural mentoring and leadership development, to English teaching strategies and classroom management. Throughout the training, Year-2 Program Mentors fostered an atmosphere of shared learning through discussions of their experiences with the Year-1 Program Mentors. A highlight from the induction training was the leadership development training: Program Mentors learnt to lead a change in the education system through practical leadership skills. The knowledge and wisdom gained from this training will help us to actualize TUF’s vision of “Every youth has a dream and can learn to realize it.”

From the Operation Desk A warm welcome to Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Kwai Chung) and Semple Memorial School as our new school partners to begin a journey of 5-years collaboration and beyond.

We started afresh this operating year with renewed vigour and a strong team spirit.

Deep thanks to all the trainers, coaches, school partners and TUF Alumni who volunteered their expertise to make this a very fruitful Induction month. The theme of “mutual learning mindset” (Roger Schwartz) was deliberated and now runs across TUF team to forge the culture of accountability, compassion, curiosity, making informed choices, and transparency.

Under the new management structure, our Program Managers Chloe, Christy and Sandra will join me to share our updates with you through this newsletter in the future.

Meanwhile, our school partners will also find us regularly in school visits to deepen our appreciation of the challenges in the field, as well as meeting you to expand our insights into opportunities and possibilities to better serve the needs of students.

Together, we shall build on this promising start.
