PETERBOROUGH GAPS ARMY CAREERS TALK

15th June

Our GAPS Centre in Peterborough had another successful careers talk from the Army. Learners got a big insight into 251 job opportunities that are available within the Armed Forces.

One learner was interested in becoming a nurse while another wanted to become a mechanic.

One staff member said, “Fun was had by staff and learners and the Army has said they cannot wait for the next visit!”

WORLD REFUGEE WEEK

20th-26th June

We reflected on TCHCs work with the community in collaboration with Suffolk Refugee Support to help Hamam start his business, Syrian Falafels in Ipswich from the ground up

Hamam knew he would be called upon to join the Syrian army. As a determined young man, he left the only country he had ever known. Hamam and his family went through medical assessments and took classes about British life Once all the necessary boxes had been ticked, they were relocated to Ipswich with Suffolk Refugee Support (SRS). He explained: "There was no way I was going to join the army, so my family and I had to leave without looking back."

With funding from TCHCs BBO programme, Hamam was supported in setting up his own business, selling falafels in the town’s market. He completed a Practical Skills for Business course with TCHC and said “It was the first time I have ever enjoyed studying!”

Hamam has now secured a part-time job with Suffolk Refugee Support as a bilingual support worker, helping others in the same position he was once in

"My name is Jo and I have Autism, communication difficulties and need help with my independence. I struggle with day-today tasks and with the ability to communicate my feelings, wants and needs.

At TCHC GAPS I get help with this and learn a lot of new skills to help me become more independent.

I also have some more specific medical needs which affect my ability to concentrate and focus, which the staff at TCHC GAPS understand and help me with "

"I am so glad to have been referred to TCHC, it is well worth going in as everyone is so helpful. They have really helped to boost my confidence and I am now able to apply for jobs that I would not have considered before "
