The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation inspires hope by providing critical funding at critical times to communities striving to make a difference.

We thank the dedicated and committed employees of YAM Worldwide who continue to make our work possible.

We deal in hope.

2020 was a year like no other.

We watched our community being challenged in ways we had never seen before, yet all the while demonstrating a resilience and an unrelenting commitment to serve those in need. We learned (or re-confirmed) a few things along the way: • Vulnerable and marginalized people in our community were impacted the most.

This tells us to stay the course. Keep the focus on those who need us most and ensure that we are reaching the most vulnerable, regardless of race, religion, roots, economic status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

• Flexibility makes our nonprofit partners resilient. As we watched our nonprofit partners pivot and adapt their services to accommodate ever changing needs, the one thing they consistently requested was flexibility to figure it out. To us, that meant loosening reporting requirements and providing more flexible funding. 61% of our grants in 2020 were general operating grants.

Our nonprofit partners stepped up in ways that we never imagined. And there is still much to do… but the future is one filled with change, optimism and hope.

EDUCATION PARTNER HIGHLIGHT

ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY We believe education is the door to opportunity. Two-thirds of jobs in Arizona will require post-secondary education and, as the world grows more complex, our economy will increasingly demand higher achievement in math and computer science. Yet, there are significant disparities in educational attainment among racial, ethnic and socio-economic lines.

Of the 1.1 million K-12 students in Arizona, a majority are nonwhite and more than half come from low-income households.

How do we accelerate achievement? We must think differently.

Arizona State University has ranked #1 in Innovation in the U.S. for six consecutive years. We look to their creative minds to partner with communities to find solutions for Arizona’s K-12 students—solutions rooted in technological advancements that use large data sets, machine learning and artificially intelligent tutoring systems.

Most importantly, we know we can count on ASU to deploy these assets to areas of greatest need in our community so that kids in Title 1 Schools, tribal communities and rural areas can immerse themselves in complicated concepts, become proficient in algebra, excel in computer science and open their next door to opportunity in Arizona. HEALTH PARTNER HIGHLIGHT

MULTIDISCIPLINARY ASSOCIATION FOR PSYCHEDELIC STUDIES Each day, we lose 22 veterans to PTSD-related suicide. First responders and victims of domestic violence struggle silently with the traumas they’ve endured. Mental illness affects nearly one-third of people experiencing homelessness. Conventional treatments have failed many who have sought help. We must do better for our veterans and all who suffer.

For over 35 years, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) has been a leader in researching safe, legal and beneficial opportunities for the careful use of psychedelics as a medicine for treatment-resistant PTSD, depression and addiction. At last, MDMAAssisted Therapy, an emerging breakthrough treatment, is nearing the end of clinical trials and potential FDA approval.

MAPS is actively recruiting and training therapists, particularly therapists of color, to ensure that patients undergoing treatment can trust and relate to the people guiding them towards healing and recovery.

With 68% of study participants no longer diagnosed with PTSD 12 months following the treatment, it’s clear that help is on the way. To explore the published results and follow them to the finish line, visit maps.org.

HOME PARTNER HIGHLIGHT

NATIVE AMERICAN CONNECTIONS From its humble beginnings in 1972 as a small grass roots organization helping Native American men in recovery from substance abuse, Native American Connections (NAC) has grown to serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year of all genders and ethnicities. Today, NAC offers affordable housing, integrated health and community development services in 21 sites throughout Central Phoenix.

In March 2021, NAC opened Dunlap Pointe, a 54-unit permanent supportive housing development primarily targeted to veterans experiencing homelessness. It is estimated that there are nearly 500 veterans experiencing homelessness in Maricopa County alone, with many suffering from substance abuse, mental illness or PTSD. We knew NAC could offer something more than just shelter—they would offer renewed dignity and hope.

NAC’s goal is to provide housing stability for its veteran residents and ensure that they have access to all available resources and benefits. This includes general mental health counseling, trauma-informed care for PTSD, traditional healing practices and assistance with the life skills necessary to thrive independently. MILITARY PARTNER HIGHLIGHT

TEAM RUBICON Since 2010, Team Rubicon has made it their mission to help vulnerable communities impacted by disasters, powered by a 140,000+ veteran-led volunteer base with advanced medical, logistic and leadership skills from their years of military service.

Severe weather events, catastrophic wildfires, devastating earthquakes and COVID-19 vaccine distribution are all ‘calls to action’ for Team Rubicon.

For instance, when Hurricane Laura struck in the Fall of 2020 as a Category 4 hurricane with 150-mph winds, followed very shortly by Hurricane Sally, parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas were devastated. Though this area received little or no media attention, Team Rubicon stepped in to help lowincome communities.

Leveraging the skills and experience of volunteers, Team Rubicon immediately worked to provide urgent response and swift recovery for the people in affected areas. Following their efforts, thousands of families impacted by the disasters were served. Learn more at teamrubiconusa.org.
