STYLISH LIVING ACROSS SCOTLAND

As much as we read the negatives in our world today, property will continue to outperform most, if not all asset classes. Many of the agents you could be speaking with today have experienced similar crisis and will be experts with advising you how to navigate this market. Choosing an agent will be key during this time, maturity will win for all parties involved.

During the last two and half years we have seen some very unusual, but incredibly rewarding trading patterns. For the first time this year we have seen our summer market move to the traditional slow down we would normally expect during this time. As soon as people could, they have taken their holiday abroad rather than in the UK. With summer ending, the enquiries are coming back strongly. Our market will always be driven by supply and demand. We still have the imbalance of more buyers looking than property available; at Rettie & Co. we currently have 4 buyers for every property we take onto the market. If sellers have a quality property, in popular city locations, they will sell quickly with offer levels well exceeding any home report values. Until we can build more homes, supply and demand will continue to drive our market in a positive direction and increase capital values.

Neil Cunningham Commercial Director, Rettie & Co.

With Autumn approaching, there are two things we must watch out for. First our solicitors, they are under pressure. Like all of us, they can’t recruit people fast enough to cope with the demand. Time to missive is increasing and we must keep an eye on this while keeping in close communication with buyers and sellers confirming the market is still positive. Secondly supply, sellers may choose not to sell during this crisis period putting more pressure on demand. Continuing to drive prices up, resulting in competitive bids.

To Prestige Scotland, a property lifestyle magazine celebrating luxury living.

Within each edition, we will shine the spotlight on all things stylish in Scotland, bringing you the very best in property, culture, motoring and much more.

Cost of living crisis! Sharp rises in living costs, slowing down of our economy, higher interest rates and the Bank of England warning the UK is heading into a recession! Who wants to sell their property during this crisis or even buy with knowing the economic uncertainty is going to get worse with the second energy price hike coming in the autumn. As property experts we can’t ignore how this could affect our property market, but we are still seeing positive signs when it comes to buying and selling property.

An Unforgettable EXPERIENCE

Michael Painter, Rolex Brand Ambassador at Laings Edinburgh

Q. Every client that walks through the door is treated to a tailored individual experience at Laings. What is it that makes our Rolex services both personable and memorable?

over years of trust, hard work and a shared vision for success. Laings and Rolex share many values – striving for excellence, providing the highest levels of luxury experiences and a passion for superlative watchmaking.

A. We focus on the client in front of us. What are they looking to get out of owning a Rolex watch? We want to find out what is important to them. Is this a timepiece to be used for an active lifestyle? Are they looking for a Rolex to be styled as a piece of jewellery? Choosing a Rolex to purchase is a very personal experience and we make that the focal point of each showroom appointment.

A. Passion and professionalism. When a client has chosen a Laings showroom to come and discuss purchasing a Rolex watch, we want them to feel assured we have taken care of them. We opened a beautiful new Rolex showroom on the first floor of our Edinburgh branch in May 2021, which is a fantastic space to provide the ultimate client experience.

Q. At Laings, we pride ourselves on our dedication to improving our knowledge on all things Rolex, both historic and forthcoming. What value does this bring to the customer experience?

A. We are very fortunate to be provided with the highest standard of training from Rolex and I was lucky enough to recently attend the Rolex training programme. The knowledge and experience I gained was invaluable and is fantastic to pass onto clients and colleagues alike.

A. Like the basis of most relationships, these are formed

Q. What can a client expect from yourself and the team when arriving for their Rolex appointment in one of our showrooms?

‘The founding vision of Rolex was to create high-precision timepieces that set ofstandardsexceptionalintheworldwatchmaking.’

15 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND LAINGSUK.COM|ROLEX|LAINGS

Michael Painter, Rolex Brand Ambassador at Laings Edinburgh, explains why Laings is the perfect destination to explore Rolex.

Q. Rolex and Laings have formed a special relationship over the past 60 years. Why do you think this is?

Rolex is recognised the world over for its exacting craftsmanship and timepieces that are symbols of excellence, elegance and prestige. Established in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, the founding vision of Rolex was to create high-precision timepieces that set exceptional standards in the world of watchmaking. Over a century later, this philosophy still holds true and is embodied in each Rolex collection.

Q. It must be a real privilege to work with such prestigious timepieces and knowledgeable staff each day. What is it you love most about your role as the Rolex Brand Ambassador at Laings?

A. All Rolex watches come with a five-year international guarantee and have a service recommendation of every ten years. We always advise clients to return to us for their watch services. Laings is incredibly fortunate to have a Authorised Rolex Service Centre in the company, which takes great care of clients’ cherished timepieces.

Laings Edinburgh 72 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3BX

A. This is a question clients ask me frequently. I am incredibly lucky to get hands-on with so many different Rolex watches that it makes this question harder to answer than you would think. In the current collection, my favourites would have to be the Submariner 124060 and the Yacht-Master 40 in Everose on the Oysterflex bracelet. The Submariner is such a classic piece, it can be worn with anything and is not drastically different since its launch in 1953. The Yacht-Master 40 is also a stunning watch and its Oysterflex bracelet has both a refined look and is incredibly comfortable to wear.

Laings showrooms are all home to a Laings Rolex showroom – where they continue to welcome both new and returning clients, helping them to select the perfect Rolex timepiece. Speak to their experts and allow them to guide you on your journey through the exquisite Rolex collections.

www.laingsuk.com

Q. Throughout the brand’s history, Rolex has launched a plethora of different timepieces from classic to professional models. Is there a particular model you embrace the most?

A. The best part of my role as Rolex Brand Ambassador at Laings is being able to provide the perfect watch when marking special occasions in our clients’ lives. I have been part of families’ experiences when celebrating everything from 21st birthday presents to 50-year wedding anniversaries. The Rolex purchase will always be a reminder to that client of a milestone in their lives, and for me, that is very special and an honour to be a part of.

However, this diamond in the rough is going to need some serious polishing before you can look forward to dressing the table for dinner guests. The pros pect of a full home renovation is becoming a little daunting. Where exactly do you start?

BEHIND THE SCENES

46 | PRESTIGE SCOTLAND

Jeffreys interiors let us peak behind the curtain of a recent renovation in Edinburgh’s new town, sharing their top tips to kick start your home’s glow up.

“At the risk of sounding a little cheesy, your environment hugely impacts your happiness. Get real with your needs. Before looking at paint charts, consider what is important to you. We always start with a creative and energetic meeting with our clients, drawing out their ideas and inspirations, delving into likes, dislikes, and wish list items. Asking lots of questions, we build a picture of their dream lifestyle, who will be using the space and how. We want to know about passions, hobbies, interests and what gets them excited. This important step sets the tone of the project, informing high level design direction. It is time to dream big and think bold. Naturally there will be constraints when refurbishing an existing property. Leave logic out of the equation for now. The purpose is to work out key priorities and deal breakers. Ask yourself, what would make you happy in your home?”

a good sized en suite alongside the dressing area. Opting for a neat little pocket door meant a full size bath, shower and substantial sink and vanity unit could be included without it feeling like a squeeze. However, there was little floor space for free standing storage. Identifying this at the early stages, we could take measures. Building the wall out by just 15cm provided the depth for shelving to be seamlessly hidden behind press open doors in the panelled wall, creating the perfect place to stash your lotions and potions for a clutter free bathroom. Even if the wish list can be easily fulfilled within the existing footprint, it’s still worth investing time to explore layout opportunities to their full potential on paper, before any demolition work begins. It could lead to something great”Carley Kyle, Lead Interior Designer.

“Taking the wish list, start red penning the plans to see what fits. The focus here is on functionality, digging deep into the nitty gritty. For example, will an 8 seater dining table fit in the window? Is there enough storage for your record collection? Can we fit a steam shower in the bathroom? Keen to maximise the available space, our brave clients were willing to explore opportunities to reconfigure the layout of their home to best suit modern living. Working hand in hand with GLM architects we were able to squeeze every inch from the available space, reconfiguring the layout to allow for a generous open plan kitchen and living area, WC, utility room and hidden storage space. At the back of the property, the original bedroom linked to a good-sized dressing room, but dead space hindered the capacity for storage. Altering the wall positions allowed us to transform this space into the principal bedroom suite it deserved to be, introducing both

3. Find your unique style

“Do not delay, start work on your interior design from day one. A contractor will start asking about door handles and switch plates much sooner than you think. While important, these are not the items to build your entire design aesthetic around. The decision between brass and nickel, modern and traditional, becomes a lot easier when you have established the rest of the scheme. Pinterest and Instagram are amazing sources of inspiration but quickly become an overwhelming rabbit hole of lookalikes. And that image of a New York loft may not translate as well to a New Town apartment. To bring your personality front and centre to the design, find a piece that speaks to you, something you feel a connection to. Artwork is a great starting point. Acting as the lynch pin of a design, it can lead the way for colour palette and atmosphere. I personally love diving through all the antiques shops in Edinburgh, finding unusual items and conversational pieces, to bring a unique element to a space. If you start feeling a bit lost, revisit your wish list to help channel your ideas.” Jo Aynsley, Design Director.

“We have refurbished a few properties in the USA over the years and have realised the secret of success is to put together the right team of experts, designer, architect and builder, who you can trust to get things done on time and on budget and on vision, and at the same time, giving them the space to exercise their talent and experience to create something unique and interesting. We had been introduced to Jeffreys Interiors by our son and we immediately felt comfortable in their capable hands and project management. They have a great mix of design creativity, organizational and communication skills and a wonderful air of calmness which certainly helped take away any nervousness about dealing with an arm’s length project like this in the time of the pandemic.” Cynthia Croatti and Alan Patrick.

JEFFREYS-INTERIORS.CO.UK|INTERIORSJEFFREYS

5. Enjoy the experience, appoint the right team

“Renovations are not the time for optimism. Before starting on the designs, it’s important to establish expectations on budgets and timescales. For example, you will not find ‘off the shelf’ curtains suitable for windows of Georgian proportions. Custom made will always carry a higher price tag and lead times tend to be longer than expected. Even with the best plan in the world, there is more chance of uncovering unexpected surprises when renovating an existing property. To avoid becoming a Grand Designs casualty, include contingency for both finances and completion date. Keep a keen eye on these through the project to avoid compromising on the furniture and finishes if anything unforeseen arises. Nobody wants to sit on deck chairs because the asbestos removal used up their sofa budget,” Kimberley Bremner, Lead Interior Designer

4. Be realistic

Taking on a project by yourself can be incredibly rewarding, but its best to be realistic with your time, responsibilities and experience level. The admin, communication and project management involved in a renovation is often underestimated. There are a lot of decisions to make and plates to spin. It is a full-time job. Appointing the right team of experienced professionals makes all the difference, best summed up by our clients;

When the Apollo 13 mission lifted off on April the 11th 1970, nobody on board, nor on the ground could ever have anticipated the drama and near disaster that lay ahead.

The crew, commanded by veteran astronaut James Lovell, was destined for the moon. This was to be the third ever human lunar landing, and the next successful chapter of the Apollo project. Together with Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, and Lunar Module Pilot, Fred Haise, the three astronauts were each equipped

Indeed, a major problem did occur for Apollo 13 just two days after launch. When an oxygen tank exploded on board, it crippled the Service Module and plunged the astronauts into a truly perilous situation. The mission to the moon was abandoned. Now, it was simply about getting the crew home safely.

As always, the timepieces had been issued as a vital piece of mission equipment. As described by James Ragan, the NASA engineer who first tested and qualified the OMEGA Speedmaster in 1964, “The watch was a critical backup. If the astronauts ever lost the capability of talking to the ground, or the capability of their digital timers, the only thing they

would have to rely on would be the watches on their wrists. It needed to be there for them if they had a problem.”

year, on October 5th 1970, OMEGA was presented with NASA’s “Silver Snoopy Award” – as a mark of gratitude for its contributions to the success of human space flight missions. When this prestigious award was first created, Snoopy was chosen as NASA’s unofficial mascot because of his ability to keep things light in serious situations. He also emphasized mission success and acted as a “watchdog.”

Part of the innovative rescue strategy, directed from Houston, was to move the astronauts into the Lunar Module. This craft, however, was not built to support so many people for such a long time. Therefore, to conserve energy, the crew shut down nearly all power - rendering their digital timers obsolete, and leaving the astronauts at the mercy of dark and freezing Apolloconditions.13faced

many serious challenges over the next several days, as NASA worked around the clock to overcome the increasingly volatile situation. But it was at the final hurdle, when OMEGA’s essential precision was called for.

Still today, the sterling silver lapel pin is a prized reminder of OMEGA’s history in space exploration, and especially the major role it played in the “successful failure” of Apollo 13.

Therefore, to manually readjust the course of the craft, an exact 14-second burn of fuel was required. There was simply no room for error. Without their digital timers, Swigert instead used his OMEGA Speedmaster chronograph to time the burn, while Lovell guided the craft using the Earth’s horizon as his guide. As Mission Commander James Lovell would later say, “We used the OMEGA watch that Jack had on his wrist and I had to control the spacecraft. Jack timed the burn on the engine to make that correction to get us back home safely.”

Because the mission had drifted off course by roughly 60 to 80 nautical miles, it meant that the module would re-enter Earth’s atmosphere at the wrong angle, and bounce back into space with no chance of recovery.

To huge relief, the unique manoeuvre worked perfectly, and finally, on April 17th, 142 hours and 54 minutes after launch, Apollo 13 splashed down safely in the South Pacific Ocean. The watch had played its part, and performed exactly as

The dictionary defines craftsmanship as “the level of skill shown by somebody in making something beautiful with their hands”, underlining the two most important pillars of craft; skill and beauty.

In today’s world, it is a concept that many may think is fading away with mass-produced items being manufactured in factories by the thousands. However, the importance of craft has come to the forefront in this world. The passion, skill and time that is put into handcrafted objects are not only admired by many but sought-after by consumers who care about where their purchases come from and how they are made.

“A lot of the techniques that I use are age-old, and craftsmanship keeps these skills alive. There is a rich history to what I do, and we become custodians of meaningful heritage.”

Stuart went on to say: “I have over 40 years in the industry. I originally learnt from master goldsmiths, but over the years my knowledge has progressed, gaining an in-depth understanding of techniques and diamonds.

Consumer culture looks for authenticity, quality, and creativity and how products are created is becoming more and more important. Handcrafted items have an extra touch of magic to them, and none are more magical than exquisite fine jewellery pieces. Family jeweller, Laings understands the importance of craftsmanship. They work to reinforce the craft and skill that started their story over 180 years ago, as well as using it as the guiding principle with which to write their future. Their workshops are at the heart of what they do, with collaborative spaces where skilled goldsmiths and watchmakers can work together in a technical and creative space, all united by the same passion. It is in this space that we see age-old skills paired with new techniques and innovation, working side-byside in perfect harmony to reignite a love of craftsmanship for generations to come.

“I am privileged enough to work on really emotional pieces of jewellery that will always hold significance for the wearer,” said Stuart. “They trust me with this, and that truly is an honour. I am part of their creation and therefore their story that will last for generations.”

Thomson, Goldsmith at prestigious jewellers, Laings notes: “Working on handcrafted pieces of jewellery allows me to be more creative. It gives me freedom and an artistic license, that just cannot be found in mass-produced products. “I know that I am making something completely unique, these are individual pieces of jewellery. Whether it is the particular colour of the gemstone or the elaborate metal work, the nuance of craftsmanship means that there is an inherent value to every piece created.”

The hand-worked element of these unique pieces also makes a difference in how we perceive them. They are created by hand by people who are passionate about their work, adding an undeniable emotion to the finished product that is more

The art of crafting jewellery is as old as man himself, and time is one factor that cannot be ignored when it comes to jewellery creation. Craftsmanship is not something that can be rushed, professionals dedicate an undefinable amount of time to perfecting skills and techniques. Each item has also been moulded in the hands of experienced craftspeople for countless hours. It is a labour-intensive and time-consuming process, requiring dedication and commitment which means that every encounter is enriched with skill.

Louis-Ulysse Chopard created the brand with watchmaking at its roots, with a reputation as notable artisan watchmaker, creating works of art with innovative designs as well as building precise and reliable timepieces. Decades later in 1996, Chopard’s Co-President, Karl-Friedrich Scheufele honoured the watchmaking heritage of the brand by once again producing an in-house calibre in the creation of the L.U.C watch collection. The introduction of the L.U.C collection marked a pivotal time in the Maison’s history, establishing Chopard’s independence and instilling its place as experts of fine watchmaking in terms of movement creation, development and production.

We’ve all heard the quick-fire question, asked to put you on the spot and designed to invite a thoughtful pause and careful consideration. However, the answer can be pretty straightforward. It is not objects of great monetary value or practical nature, often it is a grandmother’s engagement ring, a pendant to mark the birth of a child or a bracelet set with family stones; we save items that have sentimental meaning and emotional value.

Firstly, the baby oysters are left to mature for around two years. After maturation, the imperative task of inserting an irritant begins. This process is otherwise known as nucleation. The next stage in the pearl production entails placing the oyster in oyster beds inside a bay, using tranquil waters to recover from the surgery. Then, they are moved further to off coast areas where they will be tended as the pearls develop. After 1 to 3 years of cultivation, the oyster is opened and produces a beautiful lustrous pearl.

for its elegant and unique creations, Mikimoto celebrate their prestigious heritage, even after 120 years their pearls remain the most sought-after. With several different collections to choose from, the premium designs include classic strands string with fine silk, as well as unique diamond and gemstones pieces. The magnificent designs are all distinguished with the stable trademark ‘M’ which are added to the jewellery to signify their superior quality.
