Diamonds have long been viewed as one of the world’s most prized gemstones. Admired for centuries, with a glittering appeal that shows no sign of waning, the scintillating stone captivates onlookers with its beauty and profound mystique.

What is a diamond?

“Diamonds are essentially carbon, but it is their unique crystalline structure that creates the sparkling stones we use in fine jewellery and timepieces today. An environment of intense pressure and temperatures of up to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit combine to transform this crystalline structure into the treasured gemstones we know and love.

Carbon is a naturally occurring single element that is present in all living things. With an inherently versatile bonding ability, carbon encapsulates diverse physical properties that are truly exceptional. An example of this is through a comparison with graphite. Diamonds are made of four covalent bonds, formed in a cubic structure that allows them to be tough and durable. Graphite, however, is only made of three covalent bonds formed in a hexagonal structure, in turn creating layers that cause the construction to be brittle and weak. Whilst diamonds are not indestructible, their strength is superlative, meaning the only thing capable of scratching a diamond is another diamond.”

Where do diamonds come from?

“Today, diamonds are mined all over the world. This mining method involves vertical volcanic structures (kimberlite pipes) were diamonds form over billions of years, miles beneath the earth’s surface. Magma pushes the diamond crystals along with other minerals and rocks to the earth’s mantle where they can be collected. Diamond crystals can also be found in shallow alluvial deposits, due to geological activity, and flow into riverbeds from Kimberlite pipes. This process proves the value and rarity of natural diamonds.

The environment in which a diamond is grown can significantly alter the gem’s optical properties. As we know, diamonds come in an array of beautiful colours and this individuality can be attributed to the presence of trace elements as well as changing environments during growth.”

Lamborghini introduces the Urus Performante Special Edition, dedicated to the Essenza SCV12 and reserved exclusively for owners of the track-only hypercar produced in just 40 units. The creation of the limited-edition Super SUV was overseen by Lamborghini’s Ad Personam department, allowing each Essenza SCV12 customer to uniquely configure their own example of the Urus Performante, featuring a dedicated design and racing-inspired details for maximum sportiness.

The exclusive character of this Urus Special Edition is highlighted by the extensive use of exposed carbon fiber elements with a glossy or matte finish, echoing the treatment of the bodywork chosen by the customer: not only the carbon fiber engine hood and roof is in carbon fiber, but also the rocker covers, mirrors, and the carbon fiber frame with the Lamborghini logo set between the rear light clusters.

To underscore the vehicle’s track-oriented aptitude, Lamborghini’s Centro Stile designers created a dedicated Ad Personam livery with color combinations tailored to specific customer requests, with the paintwork of each unit undertaken in Lamborghini’s in-house paint shop. Along with a two-tone color scheme, originating from the combination of all the carbon fiber elements that stand out on the body, the lower part of the car is black, embellished with a contrasting color line that is repeated on the roof arch, further highlighting the car’s silhouette. The body colors and livery were chosen exclusively with each customer and echo those of their Essenza SCV12 cars, including the distinctive number painted on the doors. Each example is also equipped with 23” high gloss black wheels and black calipers by default, though customers can freely select the type and colors of wheels and calipers from those available.

“The Lamborghini Urus SC-V12 Edition is the most expressive and detailed livery we have ever created” commented Mitja Borkert, Lamborghini Head of Design. “It is exclusively linked and designed personally for each of the 40 customers of the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12. The livery of the Urus SCV12 is painted black in the lower part to deliver even sportier proportions on the Urus, and the exterior color is directly linked with the exclusive color of the Essenza SC-V12, with a colored pinstripe connecting the front, side and rear graphically. The result is a stormy, unique and colorful limited series of Urus.”

The cabin features exclusive Nero Cosmus (black) Alcantara upholstery with leather details, carbon fiber decorations with a choice of glossy or matte finish, black anodized aluminum elements, and a Dark Package except for the contrasting red door handles. The carbon fiber details also include a decorative element on the passenger side of the dashboard and the kick plates with the Essenza SCV12 logo and silhouette. To make the trim even more unique, two celebratory carbon fiber plaques are included in the passenger compartment, one with the Lamborghini 60th Anniversary logo, and the other with the vehicle number or the customer’s name.

Urus Performante is the sportiest and most high-performance version of Lamborghini’s Super SUV range. Thanks to its twin-turbo V8 engine delivering 666 CV of power and 850 Nm of maximum torque, the excellent weight-to-power ratio and optimized aerodynamics, the Performante accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 306 km/h. These performance features enabled the Urus Performante to set a record in the production SUV category on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb course, crossing the finish line at an altitude of 4,302 meters in 10:32.064, beating the previous time by more than 17 seconds.

Unveiled in July 2020, the Essenza SCV12 was designed for track-only use, with engineering solutions derived from racing. Equipped with the naturally aspirated V12 engine used in the Aventador, it can deliver more than 830 CV, in part due to the contribution of the dynamic supercharging at high speeds. The power is handled by a six-speed load-bearing gearbox placed transversely on the rear axle and combined with rear-wheel drive, to ensure compactness, structural continuity, and greater torsional stiffness. The weight-to-power ratio of 1.66 kg/CV is exceptional, achieved thanks to the new-generation carbon fiber monocoque chassis that combines lightness with the safety standards of the FIA regulations for prototypes.

Most importantly don’t rush the planning and design phase. Every extra hour spent getting the finer details right will ensure a smooth and successful refurbishment.

1. Design Brief – The start of the design journey and the most important stage: This is not about the detail but the bigger picture. This is where you share your kitchen dreams. A professional designer will take on board all your aspirations, add their experience, and come up with design proposals that incorporate all your key requirements.

2. Storage is king – the vision of a magazine-style kitchen with everything neatly in its place is often distanced from the reality of a busy family kitchen. Opt for long drawers rather than cupboards as they can house more and offer access more efficiently. If space allows include a large walk-in pantry or larder cupboard with in-built power and light for easier use.

3. Islands to the fore – the island is the connection between the cooking areas and the rest of the room, so the design must be sympathetic with the whole room design. If possible, incorporate a dining space, such as a breakfast bar or banquette seating, as the island will become the focus of the room.

4. Working out the worktop – before choosing a worktop, decide what it will be used for and whether it is food preparation, dining, plating up or a combination. For durability choose engineered stone, for flexibility Corian is good, while natural materials such as granite, marble or wood offer a more traditional look.

5. Choosing the cabinets – look at the texture and colour as well as the detail or simplicity of the cabinet fronts. Coloured furniture is becoming increasingly popular but opt for pastel or muted tones to ensure they remain timeless. Try including some display units, either behind glass doors or open shelves, as these provide excellent displays.

6. The kitchen workhorses – appliances are the workhorses of the kitchen. The choice and range is huge but consider carefully how and when they will be used. In the drinks area, a dedicated fridge is a much desired addition. A boiling water tap remains the most sought after kitchen item and has the added bonus of being energy and space efficient. Consider hiding many functional appliances, such as laundry machines, behind pocket doors as this will give a tidier and sleeker style.

7. Lighting up the room – lighting will almost always be zoned or layered as cooking and preparation areas should be well illuminated whereas dining and living areas may contain more mood lighting. Lighting around the base of units will provide a softer glow.

8. Binning it - consider carefully the ergonomics of the bin/ waste/sink and dishwasher systems.

And finally… the kitchen designer should be involved as early as possible, whether this is a new build or refurbishment, to create the best possible kitchen design for your space. Appoint your kitchen designer and architect at similar times, as this will allow them to work collaboratively and create a stunning, functional kitchen that performs as well as it looks.

In your opinion why has the pre-owned market seen so much growth in the last few years?

Over the last few years, the rise in popularity of pre-owned watches and the demand for new and exciting pieces have been driving factors in market growth. Clients are constantly looking to add something different to their collections, which can not often be obtained through the brands current offering. The value aspect of pre-owned watches contributes significantly to the growth in the market. The increase in watch content across social media platforms has brought the world of horology into many conversations internationally, and the pre-owned sector has certainly benefited from that. The thrill of seeking out a watch you’ve come across online, to then visiting our showroom in a relaxed and secure environment to finally get it on your wrist, is one of the joys of watch collecting and keeps our clients coming back again and again.

Has there been any surprising changes in the buying and selling patterns of pre-owned watches?

One of the biggest changes I’ve noticed is the number of places you can now buy pre-owned watches. The mindset has shifted dramatically from “second hand watches” to luxury pre-owned timepieces, as clients continue to search and invest in unique timepieces across many different brands. Procurement has become a real focus for us in the last year, as we continue to fill our showroom displays and website with timepieces of fantastic prestige.

What do you expect from the future of the pre-owned at Laings?

It’s an exciting time to be pre-owned manager at Laings. As a family-owned jewellers, we are always looking to the future to provide the best offering and service for our clients. We will be expanding our Pre-Owned presence across our four showrooms in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Southampton and Cardiff.
