PATON LIFE

We’re excited to introduce our third edition of Paton Life as we have some beautiful properties to share – and also some new faces to introduce.
A lot has happened in the property market since our last magazine in 2022, but following the economic uncertainty of autumn and winter, the market stabilised again in the spring and buyer demand remains high with some properties selling within days of coming to market.
With this in mind, we have some wonderful homes in this issue. Consider Western House, a handsome Georgian property that sits on the edge of the Northumberland village of Lowick. The house is currently split into two dwellings with The Coach House giving the next owners the opportunity to take on a successful self-catering business.
Staying with the Georgian period, Bonjedward House is an impressive B-listed mansion house outside Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders. Having been renovated by the current owners, this 9 bedroom property combines its period elegance with a beautifully designed interior, and includes extensive grounds. Moving just west towards Biggar, Menzion House is nestled within the Upper Tweed Valley, with views over the River Tweed. Again, this 5 bedroom Georgian property is filled with character and has been extended at the rear to create a wonderful open plan kitchen, dining and family zone. It’s a stunning home.
We’ve also chatted to Edinburgh-based interior design studio Jeffreys Interiors that’s sure to inspire. And on page 35 you’ll find a feature on Northumberland-based artist Amy Izat, who has a shop, studio and gallery space called 27 Art House in the heart of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Speaking of Berwick-upon-Tweed, we opened a new office at the beginning of 2023, and we’re excited to have a base on the outskirts of this bustling border town. And the Paton & Co team has also expanded with two new arrivals. Our new Property Partner, Fiona Pagett, has joined us as a Partner covering Peeblesshire, and brings a wealth of experience to her role. You can read about Fiona’s background in our Meet The Team feature on page 42.
And more recently we also welcomed Corrin Williamson, who has made the shift into property following an early career with Police Scotland. Based in our Berwick office, Corrin will be working on sales in this area alongside our co-Director Patrick Paton.
We hope you enjoy our third edition of Paton Life.

“I wanted to stock products that promote a healthy, holistic, positive and mindful way of living as for me this has been such a healing mechanism to my life.”
When artist Amy Izat opened 27 Art House in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed at the beginning of 2022, the concept was for a shop and gallery space, and a studio for Amy to work in – a vibrant space for creativity and connection. As Amy says: “Having a studio where I can interact with others is just amazing for me and very stimulating.”
The shop offers a carefully curated collection of pieces including ceramics by Falmouth-based potter Michel François and the Belgian ceramicist Elvira Genthof, along with Haeckels skincare products and cut flowers from local florist Polly’s Petals. Amy launched her first events in the gallery space earlier this year, including a still life class she hosted, and a ceramic workshop with artist James Chincharo.
When curating the products for 27 Art House, as she says: “I wanted to stock products that promote a healthy, holistic, positive and mindful way of living as for me this has been such a healing mechanism to my life.”
In 2014, Amy’s life was changed following a brain haemorrhage that affected her eyesight, and this was followed by years of treatment and adapting to life as an artist with impaired vision. “After losing a lot of my sight, it then became very difficult to draw a human, and I turned to drawing from photos of wildlife and animals which suited my new vision a lot better,” she says. “They say when you lose a sense, others are heightened, and as clichéd as it sounds, when drawing an animal, I ‘feel’ more when looking at the fur and in their eyes and somehow this shows in my drawings with an increased sensitivity to the subject’s personality.”
Amy has written about her experience and her artistic journey in her first book, A Different Kind of Vision, and she will be hosting a book signing and exhibition of drawings at 27 Art House before heading to White House City in London for a further book signing.
Asked what she has enjoyed most since opening her business last year, Amy cites the people and the sense of community. “Berwick is full of surprises and I just love the constant stream of interesting people walking into the shop that I wouldn’t meet otherwise.”
For more of Amy’s work, visit her website at amyizat.com and follow her on Instagram at @amyizat_art and @27_art_house_

A selection of beautiful properties recently sold by the team at Paton & Co.
If you’re considering buying or selling, we’d love to hear from you.
Having started his career in residential lettings, Patrick quickly discovered his passion for property and he progressed to hold several senior roles with some of the country’s leading estate agencies, gaining extensive knowledge of the market and, just as crucially, of client needs. Since launching Paton & Co with Celia in 2021, Patrick has used those years of experience and his astute eye for property to ensure that clients feel confident and fully supported when discussing their largest financial asset.
Celia began her career in property marketing for an international estate agent, and subsequently learnt the art of customer service when running a successful concierge company in Edinburgh. Celia returned to property marketing in 2015 when she became Head of Marketing for a leading Scottish property firm. After moving to the Scottish Borders, Celia set up a holiday home management company which she sold in 2021. She now works alongside Patrick, helping bring their vision for this dynamic business to life.
Following a successful early career in broadcast journalism, Fiona went on to embrace many complex and challenging roles before moving into property in 2019. Based in Broughton in the Scottish Borders, where she lives with her family, Fiona joined Paton & Co in late 2022. Combining her wealth of experience with excellent communications skills, Fiona’s understanding of the local property market places her in a prime position when advising clients.
Property is in Tamara’s DNA: her grandfather had his own estate agency in London, which was continued by her father, and after launching a company with her brother in 1999, Tamara also helped run her father’s portfolio of high end rental properties. She launched a successful tweed business after moving to the Scottish Borders, which she sold in 2013. With her keen organisational skills, Tamara ensures a smooth and efficient sales and purchase experience for our clients.
Following her Criminology degree, Corrin joined Police Scotland where she served as a Police Constable for four years. Based in Edinburgh, the city’s historic architecture inspired Corrin to purchase her first home, and this gave her an insight into the world of property. Through her early career, Corrin has gained considerable experience in creating positive relationships, and this coupled with her love of property led Corrin to relocate back to her home town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, and a new career path with Paton & Co.
