TAKING IT IN

Heat is on: Annual watch list isn’t always a cause for celebration

I

n the middle of our newsroom is the first TBBJ publisher’s giant mahogany desk. Every year, it becomes a cerebral battleground of sorts, as our team convenes to piece together our annual 25 People to Watch list. The goal is part fun, part strategic, as the process of defining 25 people we collectively believe will be the key newsmakers of 2015 helps us shape our coverage priorities in the weeks ahead. We believe it also represents a call to action for those on the list to show up, do, lead, make impact, survive or force change in the Bay area’s ever-dynamic business community. In a few cases, this is a watch list for failure. For the fly on the wall, our process of getting to the final list reminds me of clips of the British Parliament in

R LOOKING

AHEAD

WHO DID WE MISS? Join the conversation about the TBBJ’s annual 25 People to Watch on our Twitter feeds using #TBBJ25PTW.

debate, with animated pitches and counter arguments and vocal cajoling. All we’re missing are the wigs. Everyone on the team offers names and ideas and the original list reaches 40 or so candidates. Then we make passes through the list and argue for inclusion or rejection, sometimes with high levels of passion. An enjoyable part of the process is looking back on the previous year to see

how successful we were in pinpointing newsmakers. The track record is pretty strong, despite some duds. In years past, we’ve had a few “empty chairs,” reflecting important open positions that were undergoing wide searches to fill a leadership vacuum. Although a case could be made for whoever succeeds Stuart Rogel at the helm of the Tampa Bay Partnership, we have no such silhouettes for our 2015 list. There is an attempt to make sure the list reflects diversity, including regional and industry differences. But news trumps all. We expect the group we assembled to be making the headlines in 2015 across all our beats. READ MORE ON PAGE 4.

SANTOSH GOVINDARAJU RRCEO RRConvergent Capital Partners Santosh Govindaraju heads a company poised to make its mark on Tampa Bay’s two urban centers. Convergent Capital Partners owns Knights Point, a retail complex on Harbour Island in downtown Tampa, as well as 100

Central Ave., an office building in downtown St. Petersburg. Knights Point is a highly visible waterfront property, adjacent to the Westin Tampa Harbour Island. In dire need of renovations, Knights Point has the potential to become a vibrant destination that would contribute to the revitalization of downtown Tampa. In St. Petersburg, 100 Central Ave. is a vital part of the urban core. The 130,000-squarefoot office building previously housed Universal Health Care’s headquarters, and

investors say they’re seeing more demand for office space in St. Pete. Progress will likely be visible in St. Pete first, Govindaraju said. He’s working on deals for the UHC building that could bring 600 jobs to downtown St. Pete — deals that could come to fruition by February. It’ll be a bit longer for Knights Point. “By next summer you’ll start seeing the true perfomance of that property,” he said. “We’ll bring it back to life.” — Ashley Gurbal Kritzer

Termed out after 10 productive and occasionally tumultuous years on the Hillsborough County Commission, Mark Sharpe has taken the reins of the Tampa Innovation Alliance, a nonprofit economic development coalition whose mission is to lift up the USF area of Tampa. You could also call it the Suitcase City Reclamation Project. In 2011, four big players in the area — University of South Florida, Florida Hospital Tampa, Moffitt Cancer Center and Busch Gardens — formed the TIA, but it lacked focus and leadership. That’s where the cando ex-Commish comes in. It’s a daunting gig. Not only does Sharpe have to craft a vision that the four main players can embrace, he’s bent on recruiting other area businesses — right down to corner bars and body shops — to get involved. All this takes money, so raising funds will be a big part of the job. Sharpe is working on a two-year agreement, so he must balance long-term goals with quick, demonstrable results. As per usual, he’s excited, energized — and undaunted. – Eric Snider

Pinellas County’s biggest Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee owns nearly two dozen of the pastry-and-java joints, with more on the way. This year Vik Patel diversified, moving into the beer world by opening The Brass Tap in Oldsmar. It’s the first of a 10-store franchise contract with the brand. Patel is fast-tracking Brass Tap. Two more are under construction, with more in the pipeline. Patel is a below-the-radar restaurant operator who could become an unsung champion of the Bay area brew scene. — Eric Snider

A proposal by the Food and Drug Administration would recategorize some small cigar manufacturers and regulate them like they are cigarette companies. Eric Newman, president of Tampa’s last remaining commercial cigar manufacturer, J.C. Newman Cigar Co., argues that new regulations would force his company out of business and end Tampa’s long run as a cigar manufacturing center. He organized a rally last summer to send comments to the FDA before the decision, expected early in 2015. How Newman responds to the decision will determine whether Tampa gets to keep its last commercial manufacturer. — Chris Wilkerson

A quiet electronic buzz is humming in Ybor City. It’s the sound of young businesses lured by affordable rent to set up shop in Tampa Bay’s party district, a place few bother to tread before night. The historic district is waiting for a charismatic presence to tout the positives of Ybor, to draw a more businessfocused crowd. Cue the wide smile of Roberto Torres. Torres has the success story and drive to be Mr. Ybor. The head of Black and Denim Apparel Co. now sells his merchandise in his three-inone retail, cafe and coworking space. The space’s opening is perhaps the first flashy step in inviting young urban professionals to spend the day in Ybor City. – Wade Tyler Millward

This is going to be a big year at Tampa International Airport at almost every level and Tiliacos will have a hand in most of it. After more than a year of planning, the new concessions rollout begins in 2015 with the awarding of several new leases to a fresh lineup of retail shops, restaurants, bars and duty free stores. Tiliacos also is in charge of TIA’s world class customer service – arguably one of the reasons companies are attracted to Tampa Bay. With a $1 billion construction project under way, it will be Tiliacos’ team trying to keep the experience seamless so the airport can keep its reputation. — Chris Wilkerson

He helped create University of South Florida-St. Petersburg’s undergraduate entrepreneurship program. He lends his services as a walking LinkedIn to new faces in the tech crowd. Scott has the resources and potential to create a public-private partnership between tech and colleges, with a lot of tech dollars at his disposal. TBTF can add practical meaning for its partners by fulfilling the technology sector’s promise of luring companies with products and talent. RRTampa Bay Times After a tumultuous 2014, the chairman and CEO of the Tampa Bay Times said he’s looking forward to 2015. “We’ve taken some strong measures this year and put us on a sturdy and strong footing as this year ends and next year starts,” Paul Tash said. Those measures include a 5 percent pay cut for full-time staffers, buyouts and layoffs, as well as shedding naming rights to the hockey venue where the Tampa Bay Lightning play. Tash declined to say how many employees remain in the newsroom of the publication that claims the title, “Florida’s largest newspaper.” The Times took out a $28 million loan from Crystal Financial LLC that’s due in December 2016. Boston-based Crystal specializes in “making loans to companies that require more debt capital than is currently made available from traditional lenders.” Digital content will be a major focus in 2015. “We’re going to make it easier and cheaper for print subscribers to have full access to our digital work. That has been a technical hurdle for us,” Tash said. — Ashley Gurbal Kritzer

Lamb will be at the head of the table as the Tampa Bay Partnership, the area’s largest economic development organization, begins the search for a new CEO. It’s an opportunity to take a fresh look at the market, and find “models of success” among other regional economic development groups, Lamb said. Lamb had been chairman for less than a week when he accepted the resignation of Stu Rogel, the founder and CEO who led the Partnership for more than 20 years. The organization has established priorities of workforce issues, transportation, baseball as an industry and marketing the region in a way that supports other economic development partners. The Partnership’s board has been “deeply engaged” in talks about those priorities and the future, Lamb said, and is focused on creating a vision for the next 20 years. — Margie Manning

USF President Judy Genshaft is regularly a candidate for our annual people to watch feature because of the size of the institution, its business focus, its national rank as a research university and the number of USF graduates who stick around Tampa Bay to grow careers. This year, she could play a pivotal role in shepherding a downtown Tampa home for the $163 million Morsani College of Medicine and USF Heart Health Institute. A proposed campus at Channelside Drive and South Meridian Avenue in downtown Tampa could be “bigger than baseball,” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told a group of USF trustees in October. If she can persuade the Legislature to help make the development happen, the move will also free up needed space on USF’s main campus. – Alexis Muellner Look online for a list of people we are always watching like Jeff Vinik and Bob Buckhorn in a new 25 People to Watch Hall of Fame list. www.tampabaybusinessjournal.com

When D.T. Minich left his job as director of Pinellas County’s tourist bureau this summer, his long-time right hand took over and from all appearances the transition has been seamless. Yet that pesky “interim” tag persists. Flush with dollars from record bed tax receipts, Downing and his staff unveiled an ambitious marketing plan for 2015. Yet the commissioners continue a nationwide search for Minich’s replacement, in what some speculate is because of the $50,000 they committed to a search firm. At some point, Pinellas government risks losing a valuable talent who has a strong reputation nationally. — Eric Snider

Brian Auld will be the most public voice of the Tampa Bay Rays as the baseball club pursues options for a new stadium. Just a couple of months after he was promoted to president of the Rays, Auld stood side-by-side with St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman at a Dec. 9 news conference, discussing a memorandum of understanding that would allow the Rays to explore stadium sites in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. “We have immense challenges ahead of us in terms of finding our new home and our future home,” Auld said at the news conference, adding, “It’s not going to be easy to get there.” —Margie Manning

Ryan Toth stepped into the local leadership role at Beck Group this fall when Mark House took on national responsibilities. Toth’s promotion is in line with Beck’s culture of developing its talent and moving its directors around to develop new skills and keep the leadership fresh. At age 24, Toth saw an ad on the wall in the basement of USF’s engineering school and applied for an internship. He started at Beck making coffee and taping up drawings. In 2015, he’ll oversee the expansion of his staff from 70 to 100, based on Beck’s role in the $500 million Phase 1 development at Tampa International Airport. – Alexis Muellner

It’s high noon for the smartphones of car-shy Hillsborough County residents. Skirting the law – and the price and inconvenience of a traditional cab – are the popular ridesharing apps. Uber and Lyft have replaced traditional cabs for pedestrians avoiding parking before a night on the town, or risking a DUI after. The man leading the county’s showdown with ridesharing is Kyle Cockream, lawman-turned-head of the county’s public transportation commission. After 28 years at the Hillsborough County sheriff’s office, Cockream moved to transportation. His enforcement of fines and misdemeanor charges for Uber drivers has earned fierce criticism from the technology community. His actions embarrass the area as a backward luddite, critics say, although he has the support of traditional cab companies. He faces challenges not only from the San Francisco startups, but also taxi services launching their own competing Uber-killer apps. While Uber foots the fines, Cockream promises his own app as an answer to ridesharing. He faces the difficult task of coordinating all the county’s public transportation into one app, taking the best Uber services permitted by law. — Wade Tyler Millward

MIKE MERRILL RRCounty administrator RRHillsborough County Amid the drumbeat that mass transit is the key missing link in Tampa Bay’s long-term economic development, Hillsborough’s county administrator must lead an effort to fashion and sell a transportation plan that taxpayers have shown they’re reluctant to pay for. Mike Merrill is soft-spoken and poker-faced, but it’s not hard to recognize a burn in his belly to get things done. He has a thorough understanding of the Rubik’s Cube that is Hillsborough transportation, big picture to minutiae. The administrator also has the trust of his bosses at the County. That all will come in handy in 2015. Public transportation is in dire need of a victory in these parts. Merrill is now the point man for making it happen. — Eric Snider

The print media has been visibly losing altitude as a result of the disruptive forces of digital media. SaintPetersBlog’s Peter Schorsch considers himself to be among the disruptors. Schorsch’s company picked up steam in 2014 with a couple of splashy hires. His ambitious plans for 2015 include full-time staffs in Orlando and Jacksonville to cover local politics and help launch FloridaPolitics. com – a domain he picked up this summer for only $8,500. He also has plans for a quarterly glossy magazine in 2015. He recognizes he is a “walking conflict of interests,” since about 70 percent of his company’s revenue is from advertising and the other 30 percent is from political consulting. Schorsch expects Extensive Enterprises will hit the $1 million revenue mark in 2014. Schorsch sees the political industry with its lobbyists, consultants and firms focused on political power as a $1.1 billion industry in Florida that is not being targeted by anybody else. “This is a really cool moment,” Schorsch said looking into the next year. “I was as busy the week after the election as I was the week leading up to it.” — Chris Wilkerson

Landing a potential new stadium as home for the Tampa Bay Rays is one of several key economic development initiatives for Murman. “This is going to be a major year for us,” Murman said. Another vital piece is “transportation as it relates to economic development, to make sure we have the right growth patterns established for the county.” With hundreds of thousands more residents projected to move to Hillsborough County over the next two decades, creating the right transportation network for a live-workplay environment is crucial, she said. — Margie Manning

Industry observers expect about 40 community banks in Florida will disappear in the next year or two, as they are swallowed up by bigger institutions. Martinez will play a leading role in that consolidation, after IberiaBank Corp. (Nasdaq: IBKC) completes its purchase of Florida Bank in 2015. As IberiaBank’s Florida regional president, Martinez will have a vital tool to use for acquisitions: IberiaBank stock, which has grown more than 50 percent in value in the past couple of years. That might be just the lure needed to persuade aging community bank executives and investors eager to get more liquid holdings to sell. — Margie Manning

As the WaVE hits an accelerated pace of its own in 2015, Mark Swanson is in a position to help the organization leverage some of its wins. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he cut his teeth as a serial entrepreneur, raising more than $70 million in venture capital. He sold Telovations Inc. six years after he founded it to Bright House Networks in 2012. He’s now vice president at the cable, phone and Internet provider. 2015 will be an important year for the WaVE as it is only two years out from it’s 50 & 5 goal and has made aggressive moves like bolstering its board for next year with New York-based entrepreneur Kelly Hoey. – Wade Tyler Millward

Heights, with his partner at SoHo Capital, Adam Harden. Just north of downtown Tampa, Riverside Heights is entitled for 1,600 residential units, 400,000 square feet of office space and 200,000 square feet of retail space. That type of development in close proximity to downtown Tampa could create the kind of density that’s necessary for urban vibrancy – the kind of density it currently lacks. Up first is a 317-unit apartment building, and the

partners are also on track to open up the first phase of the Armature Works building on the site. The first phase will include two restaurant concepts, owned and operated by the partners, although Bruck isn’t ready to disclose what they will be. Ideally, that phase will be open by September or October 2015. “We want to create something that’s going to be impactful for the next 20 years,” Bruck said. — Ashley Gurbal Kritzer

After being on the job for about 90 days, the interim leader of Tampa’s Museum of Science and Industry already has an idea of where the science center needs to be in the next six months. That’s when a permanent leader is expected to be named to replace Wit Ostrenko, who stepped down after nearly 27 years in the top spot. Demeulenaere expects to compete with “several hundred” applicants for the permanent post. For now, she’s focused on investing in the core guest experience, and trying to show visitors how “museum” may not be the best description for MOSI. “You have to change the definition of what museum means in people’s minds,” she said. — Pam Huff

ARNIE BELLINI RRCEO RRConnectWise Arnie Bellini is confident that Tampa Bay will be able to create a high-tech vibe like the one you see in Silicon Valley. “Everything about this area says we’re overdue,” he said in October. And he’s doing his part to walk the walk. The ConnectWise “campus,” as Bellini calls it, has expanded by 70,000 square feet and grew by more than 60 employees from 2012 to 2013. “This growth is because every company needs to deploy technology to grow,” he previously said. “We’re bringing Silicon Valley to Florida.” Bellini was one of the regional finalists for entrepreneur of the year for Ernst & Young in 2014, a recognition that reinforces his capital outlay and growth projections. - Jo-Lynn Brown

DALE GORDON RRExecutive director RRTampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission Dale Gordon will have an incredibly busy 2015 signing movies and commercials to film in Tampa Bay if the legislature passes a film incentive package this session. She will have an incredibly busy 2015 even if Tallahassee doesn’t pass film incentives drumming up business to come here despite the competitive disadvantage. Hollywood superstar and sometime Florida resident John Travolta helped Gordon make a case to lawmakers at an exclusive event at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in November. It will take a blockbuster effort to get an incentive bill passed, but Gordon said she is ready to play whatever hand she is dealt. Convincing the studio to film the highly anticipated Ben Affleck movie “Live by Night” in Ybor City without state incentives will be nearly impossible. – Chris Wilkerson

In real estate circles, Andrew Wright is largely known for launching Franklin Street at age 25 and growing it through the recession. In 2015, though, Wright will face a much more public challenge. Franklin Street has been tapped by Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik to oversee the leasing and management of Channelside Bay Plaza, the beleaguered waterfront mall in downtown Tampa’s Channel district. The challenge Wright faces in 2015 is making the plaza into a destination before the remainder of the surrounding neighborhood is built. It’s his job to create a place that will draw in not only the surrounding neighborhood, but the entire city. — Ashley Gurbal Kritzer

Revitalizing University Mall goes beyond retail tenants

USF MEDICAL SCHOOL

Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik sees a medical school as an anchor of his billion-dollar development plans for downtown Tampa. The University Jeff Vinik of South Florida board of trustees has approved a downtown location for the Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Health Institute. “Energy, vibrancy, people: It’s the beginning,” Vinik said.

RAYS’ OPTIONS EXPAND

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman has agreed to allow the Tampa Bay Rays to search for a new stadium site in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. The stadium site search is a fine line for Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn, a regionalism advocate who at the same time is a very vocal cheerleader for Tampa, especially its urban core. “This is not about me. This is not even about Tampa. It’s about keeping the Rays in the region,” Buckhorn said. “I’m competitive as hell but more important is that we keep this team and that they’re successful.”

University Mall’s status as an aging, rundown enclosed mall is hardly unique across the country. But unlike many of those properties, which have been hurt by changing demographics in their surrounding areas, the mall on Fowler Avenue is in a strong trade area, with the nearby University of South Florida and health care institutions providing a customer base. RD Management LLC, based in New York, has plans to capitalize on that dynamic. It paid $29.5 million for the mall and is planning to overhaul the mall’s west anchor. A conceptual site plan posted on its website shows a warehouse club, grocery store and fitness center in the spot of the vacant west anchor. The conceptual plans also add a medical office and student housing component to the north end of the property. “I think it’s a great location and it needs some tender loving care,” said Richard Birdoff, principal with RD Management. “And I think we can make it a vibrant place again.”

ALEXIS MUELLNER

A New York developer has big plans for University Mall. The mall’s location makes it a viable redevelopment play, said Brian Bern, a senior director with Franklin Street in Tampa. He said he could see a mix of service, retail and restaurants and possibly a hotel on the site.

Luxury retail won’t succeed, Bern said — it would have to be geared toward the student population. “I’ve got some clients myself that would like to be in that trade area,” Bern said. “The traffic is just so strong up there.”

Uber spreads outside Tampa-St. Pete, taxis increase opposition Controversial carpooling app Uber is opening operations in other parts of Tampa Bay. Enraged cab drivers, who say the service is siphoning off business unfairly because it avoids going through the licensing process mandated of traditional taxis, asked the Hillsborough County Public Transportation Commission Dec. 10 to do more against Uber. R MY

Commissioners told dozens of taxi representatives that handing out tickets and charging misdemeanors is maximum punishment they can dish out. Transportation authorities in places where Uber and Lyft have adjusted to regulations, such as New York, were aided by law enforcement, Chairman Victor Crist said. Taxi drivers also came to the meeting to show support for the latest effort to

create a union. This union is more about drivers sharing resources and participating in the community than the traditional model of a union, said Rick Smith, chief of staff of the SEIU Florida Public Services Union, the group spearheading the effort. Commission Executive Director Kyle Cockream said he wasn’t sure the union effort would be sustainable unless more drivers showed interest.

FOOD TRENDS

New gelati joint in Tampa is part of dessert mashup movement Gelati is not just the plural of gelato, Italy’s creamier version of ice cream. Gelati is also a layered combination of Italian ice and soft-serve ice cream. Rita’s, with several locations throughout the Tampa Bay region, has been offering the hybrid dessert for years. This week saw the soft opening of Mr. Penguin in South Tampa, which features Italian ice, soft-serve ice cream and, yes, gelati. Los Angeles transplants Chris Oh and David Lee, along with a silent third partner based in California, have developed the new brand and opened the flagship Mr. Penguin on Platt Street. Gelati is part of a trend that restaurant analyst Darren Tristano calls “mashup desserts.” He cites as examples the “cronut” (croissant/donut), “walnut” (waffle/ donut) and “townie” (tart brownie). The mashup idea also extends beyond desserts

— for instance, Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco. These fusion treats are part of a mad rush to develop products that appeal

to Millennials, said Tristano, of Chicago-based Technomic: “It’s a generation that really looks for what’s new — and

what’s not.” Mr. Penguin has a grand opening planned for early January.

BUBBA HEADED BACK TO TAMPA BAY AIRWAVES Strong signs point to inflammatory radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge Clem returning to the local airwaves at WHFS98.7 FM in early January. New owner Beasley Broadcasting wasted no time dumping the sports-talk format “The Fan.” An Internet domain registrar normally used by Beasley registered three new names: 987Bubba.com, Bubba987.com and Bubba1047.com. The latter refers to speculation that Clem might ultimately move to the more powerful 104.7 FM dial position, possibly displacing Q-105.

Universities play vital role in Citigroup’s Brandon expansion Higher education institutions - including University of South Florida and University of Tampa - are the key to job gains at Citigroup’s Brandon campus.

“There’s a huge amount of undergraduate talent,” said Gregg Morton, site president. The schools turn out students who are well-prepared to step into the

professional service jobs based locally, handling everything from direct consumer and institutional client servicing and engagement to risk modeling.

Need-to-know changes for attorneys, bankers and investors

I

n May 2014, the Financial Accounting Standards Board and International Accounting Standards Board issued a new, converged accounting standard on revenue. Unlike most accounting standard changes, this event warrants the attention of more than just accountants. This standard is a change to accounting for revenue, which is the single most important number in the financial statements in most industries. In addition to finance and accounting professionals, it is critical that attorneys, bankers, and investors gain an understanding of how the rule change will impact companies. The new standard supersedes all industry-specific guidance and creates a set of rules to govern how all companies should account for revenue. Accountants will be asked to use a significant amount of judgment when accounting for revenue under the new standard, which will inevitably introduce more diversity in practice, and increase the risk of manipulation of revenue. Therefore, users of the financial statements, such as banks, audit committees, and investors, need to understand the critical decision points subject to management’s

Brad Hale, managing director of CBIZ MHM LLC, performs technical accounting consultation services, including advisory services with respect to new accounting standard implementation. judgment in order to assess the financial performance of a company. The new revenue standard is applicable for public companies in 2017 and private companies in 2018. Public companies will have to disclose the impact to 2015 upon adoption. Substantial lead time may be needed in case information systems changes are necessary. Therefore, companies need to start the process of assessing the new standard now. The following steps provide best practices for attacking conversion to the new revenue standard. Step 1: Create a cross-functional team and execute brainstorming sessions to understand all revenue streams and all

of the areas in which revenue impacts your company. Since the accounting and finance teams can’t be expected to know all of the areas in which revenue impacts the company, make sure to include individuals who negotiate contracts such as supply chain and legal professionals, as well as accounting, finance, tax, treasury, information systems and human resources professionals. For instance, revenue may be a factor in debt covenant compliance or compensation arrangements, which are areas governed outside of the traditional accounting function. Step 2: Perform a technical deepdive into your company’s contracts and conclude on the appropriate accounting using the five-step model provided by the new revenue standard. The execution of this step can primarily be left to the accountants, but it will be critical for the accountants to understand all deliverables under the contract, as well as the derivation of the transaction price, including any variable consideration. Step 3: Document your conclusions. The new revenue standard requires the use of substantial judgment by management. Therefore, it is more important than ever to document the

reasoning behind each of these areas of judgment. Step 4: Continue to monitor implementation questions and answers that arise over the course of the next several years. Interpretive guidance will inevitably be introduced, and it is important to ensure that your company’s conclusions are in line with any such guidance provided. Step 5: Create tools such as a contract risk map for contract negotiators and accounting guides for contract modifications. As information systems and policies and procedures throughout the organization change, ensure that the proper tools and controls are in place to govern the company’s approach to revenue recognition. The implementation of the new revenue standard cannot solely be left to the accounting professionals. It is critical that other areas of the organization are able to provide input to support the areas of judgment introduced by the new standard. Those professionals, who frequently rely on revenue as a benchmark for investing, must understand the changes in order to continue to judge financial performance.

Empath Health’s top physician believes organization has deep impact

Q

Why Dr. Woods is a big deal: Suncoast Hospice has very recently been part of a rebranding effort and now falls under the Empath Health umbrella. As the organization’s chief medical officer, her position is a mix of clinical and administrative functions. Her main role is to ensure the quality of the medical care for patients across the Empath care continuum. It isn’t widely known how diverse the organization is, as it also includes services in AIDS care, children’s services and home health care, just to name a few. Woods has the rare distinction of being a physician who started her career as a registered nurse.

Scott P. Riley says he’d live a different life if private school hadn’t saved him. Riley’s last straw in the public school system came after he manhandled a teacher in the sixth grade. At the time, his single mom raised him and his siblings in 1960s Largo on a nurse’s salary. His father, once a successful businessman and World War II veteran, was absent after a nervous breakdown. A neighbor sponsored Riley’s admittance to Mary Help of Christians Catholic Center’s private school in Tampa. There, he embraced schooling. He later accepted a football scholarship to University of South Florida. “I know the value of education,” Riley said. “Just because children are poor doesn’t mean they’re not smart.” Now CEO of Tampa-based Financial Information Technologies Inc., which does business as Fintech, Riley directs the company’s philanthropic funds to educational programs. The end goal: training and maintaining a skilled workforce in the Tampa Bay area starting at

an early age. Fintech, which processes almost $2 billion a month in electronic alcohol sales, connects local businesses to untapped human capital at USF. Riley said he encourages fellow CEOs in civic organizations to go to USF to find marketing or accounting interns who are hirable if they fit the company culture. He himself hired four USF interns

after they helped Fintech build a more organized data system. For pre-college students, Riley created a scholarship to pay the nearly $1,000 difference between the cost of private school tuition and what’s paid by a program sponsoring students from low-income families with tax dollars. He estimated 370 kids afforded private school thanks to the public-private

partnership as opposed to the dozens he could help on his own. Despite having two children who are public school teachers, Riley said he refuses to deal with the bureaucracy of public school. He believes private school graduates are more likely to graduate college. He encourages other CEOs to reroute tax dollars into good causes. “You can make bang for your buck and direct where your money goes,” he said. “These days, you can give philanthropy and get a great return on it.” When Riley prays for deals to close, he promises to donate some of his earnings to Mary Help, the Catholic center that saved him years ago. Riley said he’s also working to open a high school at Mary Help in the Cristo Rey network of Chicago-based private Catholic schools. The high school, still in the formulation stage and slated to open in 2017, will have a work study program to connect students with internships. “Those of us that have been fortunate enough and become successful, you have to give back,” he said. “It’s finally cool to talk about giving.” “It’s hard not to like yourself if you’re helping others.” — Wade Tyler Millward

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

Mark Fernandez Senior Vice President The Tampa Bay Rays are proud to join with United Way Suncoast as charter sponsors of the Tampa Bay Business Journal’s 2014 Corporate Philanthropy Awards. Our organization feels strongly that we have a unique

opportunity and responsibility to be impactful corporate citizens throughout the region. Our mission, to energize our community through the magic of Major League Baseball, is what drives us to be champions for philanthropic giving in our community. We work tirelessly to build a sustainable relationship of philanthropic excellence with our community partners. Since 2008, the Rays and the Rays Baseball Foundation, the official charity of the Rays, have proudly contributed more than $14 million through numerous outreach programs. The Rays Baseball Foundation focuses primarily on youth and education in the region. This year we launched ‘Be Water Smart from the Start’ with community partners including the YMCA’s of Metro Tampa, Greater St. Petersburg and the Suncoast. In 2012, RBF and the Helios Education Foundation announced a five-year, $1 million-dollar scholarship commitment to Take Stock in Children in five Bay-area counties. The Foundation also continues its partnership with United Way Suncoast and Jabil to provide the South St. Petersburg Neighborhood Initiative’s Walking School Bus program. The program ensures children attending Campbell Park Elementary have a safe way to get to school each day. RBF’s summer reading program, Reading with the Rays, now reaches nine counties around Tampa Bay with more than 22,000 kids participating this year. The program is designed to prevent summer learning loss by encouraging students to “read around the bases” at their local library for Rays prizes. We are proud to be a positive corporate partner in the Tampa Bay community and salute the finalists and winners announced today. We look forward to working with them in the future to ensure the health and success of our region.

Suzanne McCormick CEO As part of this great community, each of us shares a responsibility for the future of our region. And by exercising compassion for our neighbors, we build a foundation for prosperity, while inspiring others to stand up and make a difference.

The challenges we face as a community are significant. For example, in the central west coast of Florida (Citrus, DeSoto, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas and Sarasota counties) 15% of households live below the poverty threshold. What is even more eye-opening is that an additional 29% of households are above the poverty threshold, but are unable to consistently afford the basic necessities (2014 A.L.I.C.E. Report). I am inspired by the way our business community responds to challenges like this by rallying to help neighbors in need. Ensuring our youngest residents get the early literacy support they need to succeed in school. Working with teens to help them graduate from high school on time, prepared for college or career. And helping adults learn to make more informed financial decisions and develop the skills needed to secure better jobs. In short, helping the people of our community achieve a better life. Our work is bringing people and community resources together to address the most pressing issues we face today. In that role, we are fortunate to witness amazing generosity of spirit and resources from our business community through serving on non-profit boards, encouraging volunteerism, and making generous financial and in-kind investments. Because of your commitment and support, our community is a better place to live. United Way Suncoast is proud to once again join the Tampa Bay Rays as sponsors to the Corporate Philanthropy Awards. It is our privilege to be able to recognize the organizations and companies in our community that are committed to creating a culture of caring and making a difference.

The financial institution supports charities and initiatives that further the reach and impact of financial literacy and homeownership, with a special interest in helping to build personal prosperity, the company said in award submission materials. The not-for-profit credit union has partnered for the longterm with philanthropic organizations including Junior Achievement, Boys & Girls Club, United Way and Wheels of Success. Every year, the company also completes employee-driven charity fundraisers. They come together and select 12 charities — one per month — to rally behind. “Each month there’s a champion,” Brancucci said. From executives to tellers, as long as it’s not offensive, religious or political, employees can get creative to raise funds. “It gives them ownership of it. Then of course, that’s contagious,” he said. One example was a bowl-a-thon

for Junior Achievement that raised more than $21,000. GTE employees who show interest in serving on boards must pass a few “tests” beforehand. They have to be active on a board and it has to be a cause they’re passionate about. “There’s a difference between sitting on a board — I could sit on a chair, too,” Brancucci said. “We want you to be out there making a difference.” GTE also created the GTE Cares Program which rewards staff for volunteerism and personal donations. It offers special recognition, gift matching and financial support to staff’s team programs, submission materials said. Brancucci noticed a difference in hiring once GTE started really honing in on community involvement. “They come in new employee orientation and when we ask ‘Why did you join?’, a lot of them say they want to be a part of it,” he said. “That’s a big change. It’s now making the culture really kind of ingrained in the organization, hiring people that come with that particular motivation.” The TBBJ’s own reporting shows that Millennials are more interested in working for companies that care about the local community. — Pam Huff

Achieving one’s potential is a challenge that starts early on for many individuals. Children in poverty who aren’t able to read at grade level by 4th grade are nearly three times more likely to drop out of high school, struggle financially and repeat the cycle of poverty. RAYMOND JAMES’ MISSION STATEMENT

Corporate philanthropy is so vital at Raymond James Financial Inc. that the company has included it in its mission statement. Through individual efforts of its employees as well as corporate initiatives, Raymond James provided more than $8.5 million in total monetary contributions to nonprofits and charities in 2013, fulfilling the statement in the mission that says, “We must give something back to the communities in which we live and work.” The St. Petersburg-based financial services firm annually sets aside a percentage of profits for charitable purposes, with a portion of that money reserved to support organizations in which the company’s 10,000 employees are actively involved. To encourage those efforts, the company has created an internal community blog where workers across the country can upload pictures and share stories about their activities and the impact they have made.

Raymond James Cares, a firmwide corporate initiative, grew out of that individual work. It started as a pilot project in 2011, was formalized the following year and has grown exponentially since then; during August 2014 advisors and associates across the country collectively volunteered more than 3,980 hours to 90 local organizations. A second major corporate initiative is the United Way campaign. The company matches home office and branch office employees’ United Way gifts, up to $5,000 per person, in communities

across the U.S. Tom James, executive chairman and former CEO, began encouraging United Way involvement in the 1970s. Over the 40 years since then, Raymond James has raised more than $20 million for the cause. In the 2013-14 campaign, associates raised $2.36 million in pledges, with a corporate match of $1.92 million. The company’s corporate philanthropy outreach is continuously evolving. This year, CEO Paul Reilly is chair of the American Heart Association’s Tampa Bay Heart Walk, which will be held at Raymond James Stadium in November. The firm expects to raise $200,000 and recruit 850 walkers. To drive awareness of the cause, Raymond James has committed to its first-ever Health and Wellness Week, submission materials said. — Margie Manning
