Community Service Description

1. Provides tuition assistance to students experiencing financial hardship, ensuring that all who are committed to service and excellence can continue their artistic training.

2. Hosts a free annual Summer STEM + Dance Camp that integrates creativity, movement, and education to inspire youth through innovative learning experiences.

3. Established an Ensemble Program for dedicated students, offering advanced training, mentorship, and performance opportunities to cultivate artistic excellence and leadership skills.

Black Girls Dance® (BGD) is a Chicago-based nonprofit youth arts organization serving girls ages 3–18 through rigorous dance training, mentorship, and performance opportunities. What began as a small series of classes has evolved into a holistic program centered on family wellness, leadership development, and artistic excellence.

BGD not only nurtures students’ technical skill but also their confidence, discipline, and academic success. Each year, the organization serves more than 200 girls, providing need-based tuition assistance to ensure that financial barriers never block access to opportunity. Signature productions such as *Mary! A Holiday Dansical* showcase students’ artistry while reinforcing community connection and cultural pride. Alumni frequently return to teach and mentor the next generation, modeling strong college and career pathways.

Grounded in scholarship, sisterhood, and service, Black Girls Dance® empowers young women to lead with confidence—on stage, in school, and in their communities.

additional comments

The nominated youth dance school is truly deserving of this special recognition for its profound impact on the underserved community it serves. It provides accessible, highquality dance education to children and teens who might otherwise lack the means to participate in such programs. By offering scholarships, sliding-scale fees, and free classes, the school removes financial barriers, ensuring that all students regardless of economic background—can explore their talents and express themselves through dance.

Beyond the art of movement, the school fosters a nurturing environment that promotes personal growth, discipline, and confidence. Students gain not only dance technique but also valuable life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and goalsetting. These lessons empower them to succeed both inside and outside the studio. Many alumni have gone on to achieve academic and professional success, often crediting the mentorship and encouragement they received from the school as a key influence in their lives.

additional comments

Equally important, the school plays a vital role in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. In a community that is often marginalized, it embraces and teaches culturally relevant dance styles that instill pride and deepen students’ connection to their roots. This celebration of culture helps youth build identity, confidence, and a sense of belonging that is essential for their development.

The school also serves as a dynamic community hub. Through performances, workshops, and outreach initiatives, it brings together families, neighbors, and local businesses, strengthening relationships and fostering community pride. These efforts promote unity and resilience in an area that often faces systemic challenges.

In short, this youth dance school stands as a powerful example of how the arts can transform lives and uplift communities. Its dedication to accessible arts education, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment has created a lasting impact that extends far beyond the dance floor.

A Finer Woman with strength and virtue, Yvette is dependable, committed, and guided by integrity. She is reliable, compassionate, and humble, embodying the true spirit of sisterhood. Yvette demonstrates a strong work ethic and is a cooperative team player who contributes positively to the sorority. She is respectable, values inclusion and unity, and always strives to help create an environment of harmony and support. Yvette has proven to be a reliable and diligent chapter member, consistently showing up and following through on her committed responsibilities. Her flexibility allows her to adapt to situations for the greater good. Her positive attitude, honesty, and genuine care for the well-being of others reflect her high moral character and the finest ideals of Zeta.

Leadership and Influence --- Please highlight the Nominee's personal and Zeta philosophy, major goals, or important influences

Yvette’s personal philosophy is to “embrace challenges for growth, live with integrity and honesty, find strength in adversity, prioritize kindness and compassion, and focus on gratitude while living in the present moment.” She embodies a “She believed she could, so she did” spirit, approaching every obstacle not as a setback but as an opportunity for personal growth and self-improvement. While Yvette does not have a specific Zeta philosophy, she deeply connects with the scripture Luke 12:48 “To whom much is given, much will be required.” This verse reflects her belief that those who are blessed with resources, talents, or knowledge have a responsibility to use them in service to others and to make a positive impact on the world around them. The expectations she sets for herself are a reflection of their unwavering belief in her potential and the guidance and resources they provided to help her pursue her personal and professional goals.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

Oftentimes, those who are the most visible, vocal, and inquisitive are assumed to be doing all the work. However, Tau Psi Zeta Chapter has many “sleepers” — dedicated Sorors whose quiet contributions are the backbone of our success — and Yvette is one of them. She is a woman of immense value who consistently brings substance and strength to the Chapter. Yvette may be quiet, but she is deeply productive and hardworking. She gives of herself selflessly and without hesitation. While she may not always be front and center, she is the Soror working diligently behind the scenes to ensure that everything comes together seamlessly. She may not often take the mic or speak at length during meetings, but she is the one thoughtfully sharing her ideas, offering solutions, and enhancing the ideas of others.

Yvette continues to serve faithfully and work diligently without seeking fame or recognition. She pours her heart into Zeta, living the oath she has taken and demonstrating unwavering dedication to the organization and its principles.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

The Zeta of the Year Award recognizes a Soror whose contributions extends beyond the previous fiscal year — one who is well-rounded, exemplifies the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and represents Tau Psi Zeta Chapter with excellence. The Soror who embodies these ideals through her dedication, integrity, and consistent service is Yvette Rena Baber. She has demonstrated, time and again, the true spirit of Finer Womanhood through her actions, her humility, and her unwavering commitment to the work and mission of our beloved sisterhood.
