ZIGGURAT
Concept: Wedding Cake
Creating a stepping facade on the south and east of the vertical architecture gives a significant presence on the Chicago waterfront. The tower is segmented into six sections, each dedicated to a specific function: public, parking, offices, and residential. The terraces created by each setback are occupiable terraces with vegetation native to Chicago. The Terracotta louvers that crawl up the vertical architecture create shading on the south and east facades.

TRANSIT CONNECTIONS
Concept: Transit Connections Community Hub’s primary intention is to be the link of the community. It includes programs for the under-housed and individuals in the neighboring communities. Programs like the Grocery store, fitness center, and the Urban Kitchen serve the downtown Fort Lauderdale Community. The Ft Lauderdale bus route system is this project’s big idea; connections are as far north as Boca Raton and south to Golden Gables. This vast bus system allows for other transportation connections, which means that the Community Hub is within reach of everyone.

IVY CITY DESIGN INTERVENTIONS
CONCEPT: Investigate the historical and contemporary ways in which communities become marginalized. Students will define and understand the concept of urban marginalization, analyze its manifestations, and propose speculative, scalable design interventions that respond to the needs of marginalized communities.
Urban Marginalization describes a community or geographic location that has been neglected and lacks access to a city’s economic and mobility infrastructure. Despite the efforts of the members of the community to advocate for better living and environmental conditions, the government provides solutions that only, in turn, harm the community.

HEAT SENSITIVITY RESEARCH
INDUSTRIAL ZONING

At least 50% of Ivy City is industrial zoning, directly impacting heat sensitivity and creating the heat island effect.
LACK OF TREES / GREEN AREAS
HEAT SENSITIVITY EXPOSURE INDEX

The lack of trees and green spaces creates the heat island effect, which causes high temperatures. The industrial zoning in Ivy City only contributes to the heat island effect, resulting in the highest average temperature in Washington DC.

Trees are only a way to filter pollution; it is better to reduce emissions of pollutants in the first place.
Trees indirectly shade surfaces and reduce temperatures. Lower temperatures decrease the risk of harmful pollutants.
Trees such as Red cedars, Cherry birches, Red maples, and English oaks are great for filtering pollutants in the air.
While trees are generally effective at reducing air pollution, they must be the right tree for the job.
Vegetation helps cities become better habitats for wildlife and people, and it helps to make city air safer.

MINI PARKS

The lack of green spaces contributes to the heat island effect and poor air quality. Adding interactive green systems within the neighborhood creates gathering and recreational spaces and brings green life to Ivy City. Each park addresses a different age group and the needs of the community.

UNITY SKY PARK
The lack of green spaces and recreational activity contributes to Ivy City’s absence of exercise and movement. The Unity Sky Park aims to provide an elevated walking path to encourage movement and ultimately lead to a healthier Ivy City. The abundance of trees within the Unity Sky Park aims to combat air pollution.

SOLAR TREE
The Solar tree provides shading and also acts as an energy source. These trees are implemented into every design intervention. Due to Ivy City’s lack of trees and greenery, Solar trees are a great way to provide shade that can double as a clean, renewable energy source that does not produce harmful emissions.

STREETCAR TRANSPORTATION
Ivy City’s transportation is isolated; there are no train stations, grocery stores, or shopping centers that are easily accessible. The Streetcar system is a primary transportation hub between Ivy City and neighboring affordable grocery stores, shopping centers, and major train stations.

IVY SHIELD APP
CRIME MAP

An Average 94.5% of crime is in Ivy City. Resulting in approximately 112 out of 27,205 incidents recorded in Washington DC this year.

Ivy Shield aims to create a safer community for Ivy City’s residents. The app allows residents to stay updated on crime in the area and will enable them to congregate for community-driven occasions.
