All students have the opportunity to engage in research & design thinking projects, and our secondary students may enroll in innovation sciences courses such as coding or Fab Lab as an option for meeting our third language requirement. Overall, our students learn how to leverage technology with systematic problem-solving as conscientious digital citizens who want to positively impact the world around them.
PROGRAM OF DISTINCTION AWARD IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
EDUCATION
BY THE MIDDLE STATES ASSOCIATION COMMISSIONS ON ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS
EARLY
CHILDHOOD PROGRAM GRADES PPK • PK • KINDER
In 2015, the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS) awarded the TASIS School in Dorado, Puerto Rico, with the Program of Distinction in Early Childhood Education (Grades PPK to 1). TASIS Dorado was the first school in Puerto Rico and the U.S. to receive this recognition. The Early Childhood Education Program of Distinction recognizes schools that demonstrate dedication to early learning through a rich, child-centered philosophy and best practices that focus on exploration, questioning, creativity, social-emotional development, and cognitive skills.
Our full-day academic program uses engaging themes to teach foundational literacy and math skills. Our daily activities are focused on building literacy and math skills through play, small group, and whole class lessons. Students will practice these skills with teacher guidance in hands-on learning centers and smaller groups.
The activities are designed to spark children’s imagination and creativity as they explore new topics and solidify their understanding of important concepts. While working independently or in small groups, students learn valuable social skills like cooperation, friendship building, and following routines.
Our PPK and PK classes feature our signature dual language program, which emphasizes language acquisition in Spanish and English. The goal is to prepare students for more formal Spanish language instruction in Kindergarten while fostering mastery of both languages throughout their TASIS education.
DISCOVER YOUR SENSE OF WONDER
GRADES FIRST TO FIFTH
We aim to provide a robust educational foundation while fostering a love of learning. E.D. Hirsch’s Core Knowledge Curriculum guides our elementary division program. The Next Generation Science and History and Geography topics are supplemented with units of study focused on Puerto Rico’s history and culture. Our English and Spanish Language Arts classes integrate rich content with the fundamentals of the science of reading. Teachers use research-proven, renowned resources to promote students’ growth as readers and writers in both languages. Like all TASIS Schools, we implement the Singapore Math approach, which helps students learn the language of math hands-on as they explore concepts concretely, pictorially, and abstractly. Additionally, in grades 3 to 5, we begin our advanced math class for selected students.
Frequent performances with active student participation provide opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and knowledge, gain stage presence, develop self-esteem, perfect their enunciation, and develop memorization and acting skills. These presentations occur with such regularity, beginning in PPK and continuing through senior year, that students build confidence and a natural ability to speak and perform in front of an audience.
SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Building student character is as important to our mission as building strong academic skills. TASIS Dorado integrates character building through dedicated programs, including community service initiatives, the Responsive Classroom approach for elementary students.
The Social Institute program for upper elementary and secondary students. We also dedicate lessons to teach elementary students about core concepts such as caring, empathy, bravery, and resilience. Seminars on important social-emotional learning topics are provided for students to support good decision-making. Parents are regularly invited to presentations on topics that support healthy and strong families.

Our College Counseling team guides our Upper School students through the college selection process by providing academic planning beginning in Grade 9 and continuing through the application and admission process. We guide and support students and parents through the application and essay writing process for pre-college summer programs, Fly-in programs, and college admission. We focus on matching students with selective universities that best align with their interests and talents. Regarding standardized testing, we coordinate and manage ERB, SM Insight, PSAT, and AP exams while providing detailed information and assistance for the SAT, ACT, and Nivel Avanzado exams.
Personalized recommendations are provided for all U.S. college applicants. During the first semester, our campus hosts visits from local and U.S. college representatives, offering informational sessions and interviews. Collaborations with other schools further expand our students’ exposure to a diverse range of colleges and universities.

ADMISSIONS
AGE REQUIREMENT FOR ADMISSION
Pre-Pre-Kinder Children must be at least 3 years old by July 31
Pre-Kinder Children must be at least 4 years old by July 31
Kindergarten Children must be at least 5 years old by July 31
TASIS Dorado welcomes highly qualified and motivated students who seek a challenging college-preparatory experience. A full class of PPK students is admitted each year and students are admitted to PK through Grade 11 as space permits.
EARLY CHILDHOOD ADMISSIONS
TASIS Dorado admits students who can meet the expectations of a high-quality preschool program, which will lead to a kindergarten experience with a rigorous curriculum. While some PPK and PK students have English as their first language, most come from homes where Spanish is the primary language. However, all our PPK and PK students are engaged in a dual-language program with weekly instruction in English and Spanish. Students develop communication skills, including vocabulary, letter names, letter sounds, and listening skills in both languages. In Kindergarten, our students participate in a Spanish immersion class. Students experience daily literacy activities that further develop their reading and writing skills. Fully bilingual teachers are trained to support all students’ language needs. All applicants are required to be fully toilet trained.
ADMISSION GRADES FIRST TO ELEVENTH
At TASIS Dorado, we are deeply committed to our selective admissions process, which cultivates a student body of motivated, high-achieving individuals who excel in academics, extracurricular pursuits, and social interactions.
For grades 1 through 11, applicants must be proficient in English, as it is the primary language of instruction. Our curriculum is specifically designed to challenge and inspire students with strong academic abilities who are naturally curious and eager to learn. It aims to help them reach their full potential both inside and outside the classroom.
As mentioned, Kindergarten students participate in a Spanish immersion class. In addition, our students in Grade 1 are also part of this program. It’s important to note that students whose native language is not English or who are new to English as the language of instruction will spend their school day in the regular classroom, fully immersed in the educational program. Starting in Grade 2, students whose native language is not Spanish will be placed in Spanish as a Second Language (SSL) or regular Spanish classes, depending on their proficiency level. Teachers provide support during this transitional period. Our goal and expectation are for all SSL students to transition to grade-level regular Spanish classes after two years of enrollment.
ADMISSION ALL GRADES
At TASIS Dorado, we thoughtfully evaluate each applicant during the admission process, keeping the child’s and the school’s best interests in mind. Our decisions consider multiple aspects, such as testing results, academic records, and recommendations, ensuring our educational programs meet every prospective student’s needs and interests.
The final admissions status for all applicants will be communicated in writing. This decision is based on the thorough review and discussion of each application by our experienced admissions committee, ensuring a fair and comprehensive evaluation.
Each applicant’s admission folder and its contents are strictly confidential and the sole property of TASIS Dorado, ensuring the privacy and security of your information.
To determine the applicant’s readiness for success in TASIS Dorado, we require a Psychometric Evaluation by a licensed psychologist. The WPPSI (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence) is the required assessment for PK and Kinder students. Please note that students must have reached their 4th birthday before this evaluation can be administered. The WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 5th Edition) is also a required evaluation for admission to Grades 1 to 11. Subscores, observations, and recommendations should be included in the report, as well as any additional tests the psychologist may deem advisable.
LEARNING ACCOMMODATIONS
TASIS Dorado has limited programmatic support and staffing for students with specific learning difficulties. Nonetheless, we have identified certain reasonable accommodations that we provide to support students with disabilities. TASIS Dorado does not, however, offer a full spectrum of special education programs. Our reasonable accommodations are approved once parents submit an evaluation report by a qualified professional to the school counselors and fill out and sign the TASIS Dorado Reasonable Accommodations packet.
The school recognizes the importance of including students, parents/guardians, classroom teachers, student support services staff, and administrators in a collaborative process. TASIS Dorado offers the space on our campus for independent specialists to provide student support in academic, speech and language, and
occupational services. For those students in need of additional academic support, parents have the option to contact an academic coach and/or specialist tutoring. These specialists are contacted and financed by the families. Families must contact their TASIS Dorado assigned school counselor to continue with the support service process for all students in all grade levels.
Admission and continuation in the School are contingent upon a match between the student’s and the family’s needs and the level of services available. For that reason, the admission and continuation in the school of any student with special needs are determined on a case-by-case basis using multiple sources of information. Please provide clear and specific information about your child’s needs during the application process.
