Network News Issue 6

Page 1

Hi and welcome to the latest edition of our Network News.

As I write this piece, we find significant drought conditions throughout large portions of our business. These challenging times remind us of the importance of resilience and adaptability in not only our operations, but our customers as well. The dry weather has impacted many aspects of our business and with little rain in the current outlook, the sowing, then growing parts of the season remain uncertain.

I am pleased to say that our business expansion into Adelaide has gone exceptionally well. This growth into metropolitan Adelaide represents a significant milestone for us and opens further opportunities for development and success. Our team in South Australia is dedicated to exploring new avenues and ensuring we continue to grow. This expansion is a testament to our strong relationship with Ampol and the hard work of our employees. We are excited about the potential this new venture holds which is already contributing positively to our overall performance.

In addition, we have seen a strong performance in maintaining fuel volume, both wholesale & retail. Jay Tonkin, Broken Hill’s Depot Manager tells me that the North & Pinnacle mine in Broken Hill is set to re-open within the next six months. This development is expected to boost our Broken Hill operations and contribute positively to our overall performance. The re-opening of the mines will also create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the region. We are looking forward to the positive impact this will have on our business and the community.

Our TASCO Carrier business is also expanding their reach with extended operation. Using Mildura as an example, our enhanced logistic capabilities will support our growing customer base in the region. We are committed to providing reliable and timely delivery services, and this expansion is a step toward achieving that goal. Read more about this expansion by our Carriers Manager, Steve Rose on pages 10 - 11.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some key personnel changes within our team. Wayne Hatcher, our Stock Controller, Head Systems Trainer, and all-round good guy has moved to Bendigo, and Nicole Adolf has taken on the role of Office Manager in Mildura. Wayne and Nicole are valuable members of our team, and their contributions greatly appreciated. We wish Nicole all the best in her new position.

Exciting times around Benalla as well, who have taken on a large parcel of business, post the retirement of our Yarrawonga sub-agent. This move will strengthen our presence and service offerings in the area. The integration of the Yarrawonga business into our Benalla operations is a significant step forward. We are committed to providing the best possible service to our customers, and this move will help us achieve that goal.

On the retail front, we have experienced exceptional growth in the food sector. This success is a testament to our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction. The growth in the food sector has been driven by our dedicated team that are providing high-quality renovations, products, and excellent customer service. We are proud of the progress we have made and are excited about the prospects in this area. Read more about this on pages 18 - 21.

Despite the challenges posed by the persistent dry conditions, we have made significant in-roads in expanding our business and improving our operations. While our focus remains on innovation, expansion, and delivering outstanding service to customers, none of this can be achieved without our dedicated, hardworking team.

Stay safe, enjoy this edition, and thanks again for reading.

Wholesale Adelaide Expansion & OPT replacement update

Hello and welcome to the 6th edition of our Network News.

With the first half of 2025 nearly complete, time has definitely flown by.

We have continued to consolidate our business into the Adelaide Metro market, with our results lining up with projected targets. Well done again to Steve Cheriton and his team of both office staff and drivers for their great work there. Also a big thank you to Tony Prosser, who came back from retirement for a couple of months to assist during this phase.

With Ampol deciding to end their relationship with Transponder Technology (TT) as their Outside Payment Terminal (OPT) provider and switching to Compac, we are about to commence a project of replacing all TT OPT’s across our network.

We have 25 existing OPT’s to replace with 1 new to industry OPT to be installed in Tawonga South. We plan to have this project completed by late Q3 or early Q4 2025.

Thank you to staff assisting in this project and hopefully we can keep the disruption to a minimum.

We already have 6 Compac OPT’s in our network, providing us with familiarity with the product already.

As we enter the quieter and colder months of the year, please ensure staff take the opportunity where possible, to have a break and recharge the batteries for the last half of the year.

Thank you to all staff for your continued hard work and lets hope we see some rain over the next few months!

Driving our network

Since our last edition we have seen a continuation of changes throughout the Carriers business.

TASO Petroleum’s third party contractor out of Yarrawonga finished up at the end of January. While it was disappointing to lose him after such a long term successful business relationship it threw new challenges at us as we had to find a way to maintain service to those customers throughout the Yarrawonga area. Those challenges were met head on as we had fantastic support and cooperation of our people and of our preferred suppliers. We were able to secure a secondhand set of Holmwood trailers and a new FM13 Volvo prime mover that were ideally suited to service this work.

Business expansion continues

It was around the same time that the Pelican Point terminal in Adelaide shut down throwing another challenge at our Murray Bridge and Adelaide staff and drivers. The shutdown was planned to occur across 3 days leaving some of our bigger customers exposed to possible stock outs. The staff and driver at Murray Bridge lead by Steve Cheriton managed to maintain service levels and avoid any stock outs which was a great achievement.

Our push into the Adelaide area continues to grow and evolve as we have now employed our third driver Alex Chandler who joins Anthony Glen-Holmes at North Adelaide and Inderjit Dhillon in Littlehampton.

Mildura continues to expand as we now have extra vehicles based there and with a lot of hard work being put in by John Carra and Reece Penny, we are starting to see the business grow and expand.

Safety & Compliance

Across all of our depots the managers, staff and drivers continue to do a fantastic job, and we are continuing to see a lot of improvement and buy in by all regarding safety and compliance. Our fatigue camera system has seen a decline in activations, as too have breaches regarding speeding and work diary mistakes.

We have exciting things planned as our management group look at better and more efficient ways of ensuring that our business model is maintained and that we look to better manage all of our assets including people and equipment. We are focused on ensuring that we can maintain a healthy workplace environment and by doing this keep driver retention at a stable level that it is at now. Linehaul and night shift drivers are an important link in our chain as are the farm and day drivers. Ensuring that they are all fit for duty is very important and we encourage drivers to put up their hand if they are not. We are also looking at new acquisitions that can help us grow as well as maintain our regular vehicle replacement program that too will help maintain a secure business model.

We cannot afford to take our collective eyes off the day to day operations of TASCO Carriers, and we continue to encourage drivers to report any issues that they face day to day with their work. There are systems in place that ensure that if a driver reports any issues or faults then these can be actioned accordingly to maintain a safe workplace.

A lot of hard work and time has been undertaken with EBA discussions and negotiations continuing to take place over this period. We have managed to achieve an agreement that has now been ratified by the Fair Work Commission. Great work by all those involved.

Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds

It was great to see the Depot Managers and Drivers get behind the Ampol, Healthy Heads Trucks and Sheds day that was held at the Ampol Terminal at Newport. Following this TASCO Carriers had an R U OK week from the 26th May which has been very well received by all those who have participated with some great initiative taken by some depots. I can’t go by without acknowledging one depotBunnaloo who really got behind the day with activities and a brief yoga session, well done Nic, Emily and the team.

What’s ahead:

• Our 13th TASCO Carriers budget build up for the next financial year 2025 – 2026.

• Our new business partnership with the Steven’s Group in Adelaide.

• The introduction of two new prime movers will come into service over the next few months.

• New builds and acquisition proposals.

• Plans for replacement of existing equipment.

HHTS is excited to introduce How Ya Travellin’? A new podcast series from Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds, created to support the mental health and wellbeing of truck drivers, warehousing team members, and everyone working across the logistics industry, whenever and wherever they need it most.

Hosted by Shane Jacobson, the series brings together honest conversations, real-life experiences, and practical, down-toearth tips designed to help you take care of your mental and physical wellbeing.

TASCO Carriers welcomes:

• Alex Chandler (North Adelaide)

• Darren Hinton (Bunnaloo)

As we head into the cold winter months with increased frost and fog events, please ensure that while you are out on the roads that you take extra care and remember, drive to survive.

Ampol Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds day at Newport Terminal

On the 26th March 2025, TASCO staff and drivers visited Ampol’s Newport terminal to participate in their Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds day.

The transport, warehousing and logistics industries face unique challenges that can impact the mental health of these workforces. Long hours, isolation, and high-pressure environments contribute to heightened stress and mental health concerns. There is a pressing need for industry-specific mental health support and interventions to address these issues and promote a culture of wellbeing and safety.

In Superfriend’s 2023 Indicators of a Thriving Workplace report, the transport and logistics sector was determined to be the lowest ranked industry in Australia in terms of workplace mental health and wellbeing (19 out of 19), with a thriving index score considerably below the national average at 65 out of 100.

This need led to the establishment of Healthy Heads, to drive a meaningful change against these statistics. TASCO was well represented, along with Ampol Terminal employees, Ron Finemore Transport and various other fuel transport companies.

Some of the positive experiences recounted included meeting staff and drivers from other TASCO locations. Another highlight was hearing Red Bull Ampol Racing team driver Will Brown recount his growing experience and awareness about the transport industry – he is the 2024 V8 Supercars champion but is still working in his family’s business. It keeps him grounded and enjoys the weekly catchup and check in with workmates.

HHTS goal is to normalising discussion about mental health within the transport industry and this was a great day for all involved to come together and get involved.

Attendees on the day:

TASCO Carriers – Paul Campbell and Helen Aisbett

Benalla Depot – David McMaster and driver Ben Seers

Bendigo Depot – Greg Burns and driver Shane Cummings

Bunnaloo Depot – Nicole Stenhouse and driver Shane Edge

Wodonga Depot – Kevin Hensell and driver Geoff McConnell

Swan Hill Depot – Matt Ridsdale and driver Mathew Quaife

Ampol Terminal Manager, Peter Breuninger expressed his appreciation for making the effort to attend the Healthy Heads Road Show at the Ampol Terminal and we thank both Healthy Heads and Ampol for inviting TASCO to be involved!

TASCO Carriers Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds

R U OK week...

During May, TASCO Carriers and Depot Staff across our network shared a breakfast for Healthy Heads in Trucks and Sheds R U OK DAY.

For the fourth year in a row Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds and R U OK? have teamed up to ensure everyone working in the road transport, warehousing and logistics industries know when and how to meaningfully connect and genuinely ask, “are you ok?”

R U OK? in Trucks & Sheds National Day of Action was 6th of May 2025 and this year again promoted “Ask R U OK? – No qualifications needed”.

"Ask R U OK? – No qualifications needed" aims to break through this stigma and highlight that you don’t need to be a qualified counsellor to check in with a colleague or friend.

This year, our TASCO Carriers team got involved, showing appreciation for our drivers and continuing the conversation about mental health, in each depot location over breakfast attended by drivers and depot staff.

Over breakfast, staff listened to personal stories from HHTS and some even participated in activities organised by their Depot Managers, each driver also received a TASCO Carriers pack which included TASCO Carriers merchandise and essential HHTS R U OK resources.

We would like to thank our Depot Managers, depot staff & drivers who participated and continued the conversation..

"The number one thing managers and colleagues should do - take the time to get to know one another." - Sarah, Linfox Distribution Centre Manager

Congratulations to Nicole and her team at our Bunnaloo Depot!

As part of the HHTS R U OK week held by TASCO, we asked our depots to get creative while hosting a breakfast for our drivers.

The most creative Depot as voted by TASCO Carriers was awarded with $500 in AmpolCash for their incredible efforts, fun and humour they brought to the day.

A big Congratulations to Nicole and her team at the Bunnaloo depot. Bunnaloo's day involved yoga, painting a TASCO truck, a fantastic spread for breakfast along with a lot of fun had along the way.

Please see pages 14 & 15 for our HHTS TASCO Carriers week recap.

Learn for a safe return: NHVR urges truck drivers to be cautious when travelling down steep descents following multiple freeway incidents

06-05-2025

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is reminding heavy vehicle operators and drivers to inspect their brakes and follow steep descent warning signs following multiple heavy vehicle incidents on the South Eastern (SE) Freeway in South Australia.

NHVR Director of Operations, Southern Region, Paul Simionato, said that the SE Freeway has been the scene of several horrific crashes in recent years, tragically resulting in the loss of multiple lives.

“The SE Freeway is a significant freight route corridor as it’s the most direct connection between Adelaide and Melbourne, and unfortunately, the intersection of Cross Road and Glen Osmond has been notorious for heavy vehicle crashes,” Mr Simionato said.

“We’ve seen far too many incidents where heavy vehicle brakes have failed or road warnings have been disregarded, and tragically, people have lost their lives.

Mr Simionato said that faulty or ineffective brakes are a serious safety concern, and even minor defects can have serious consequences.

“We know this particular freeway presents unique driving conditions for heavy vehicles – but it’s up to the driver to ensure they are adhering to warning signs, shifting to a low gear before beginning the descent, keeping to the left lane and maintaining a safe and controlled speed,”

“If a driver is descending on the SE Freeway and has a concern or issue with their brakes, we strongly encourage them to use the two safety ramps available, which are free to use.”

“Prevention starts with education, and NHVR SCOs are committed to working with industry to ensure every driver and operator understands the risks involved with faulty brakes,”

“Operators have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and braking systems are in top condition - for the safety of their own drivers, other road users, and to the communities their vehicles travel through.”

A well-maintained braking system with correctly adjusted brakes is essential in any situation, especially when making steep descents like parts of the SE Freeway.

The NHVR will continue to educate drivers on maneuvering through the SE Freeway and following steep descent warnings, as well as take enforcement action when necessary to ensure the local community and all road users are kept safe.

Retail refurbishments, Tobacco law changes &

I would like to welcome the new staff to our network and additionally, congratulate our retail staff who will achieve long service miletones this year, a fantastic effort and thank you!

It has been a busy start to 2025 within TASCO’s Retail Network. With the 2 largest holiday breaks in the first 4 months of the year and having exceptionally warm weather right through to the Easter period, people are out and about and sites are seeing record numbers of feet through the door.

This, along with several of our branding and refurbishment projects coming into fruition, has seen total sales and volume grow year on year with food sales being the standout showing in excess of 30% growth compared to the same period in 2024.

As good as that sounds, we still have much work to do, there are several projects already approved and about to begin, with many more sites earmarked for refurbishments and food inserts over the next 3 years. TASCO Site Managers and Agents alike are very excited to progress the vision of becoming the #1 place to stop, eat and refuel.

Please refer to pages 20 and 21 for our rebfurbishments at Mildura Bridge and some fantastic photos. A big thank you to all involved in these projects!

Major Challenge - Illicit Tobacco

The recent Australian Association of Convenience Stores (AACS) conference in Melbourne has confirmed what TASCO Site Managers and Operators were already well aware of, Tobacco is no longer the #1 category for turnover in convenience retail.

The proliferation of illegal tobacco has seen a steep decrease in total sales value for this department. TASCO alone is showing an 8% decrease in total network tobacco sales Jan-Apr versus the same time last year, with one location showing in excess of 40% downturn in tobacco sales. While TASCO strongly supports the efforts of government and health authorities to reduce smoking rates, the ongoing rise in tobacco prices—coupled with broader cost-of-living pressures—is driving more consumers toward the black market, significantly impacting legitimate retailers.

“With illegal cigarettes available for $10 a pack, there really is only one way to break the business model of the crime networks that have a stranglehold on the illegal tobacco trade – and that is to re-evaluate tobacco excise and drive Aussie adults who do choose to smoke back into the legal, regulated market, where they will at least interact with health warnings and quit messaging,” – AACS News

Whilst we wait in hope for a solution to this criminal activity, it is testament to our Operators, Managers and buying partner New Sunrise that the merchandising, marketing and focus on growth categories has seen an overall increase in retail sales for TASCO Petroleum – well done to all.

Getting to know...

How did you get started in the retail industry?

I started in retail at the age of 15 working at Woolworths as my first job.

What led you to your current role as site manager?

After 9 and half years at Woolworths, various different management roles and stores. I felt that I wanted a change as i'd never had another job, so I left the company and took a few months off work before finding something new. I applied for a role at a TASCO depot but was not successful, fortunately, they did see something in me as asked if I was interested in applying for the site manager role at Tailem Bend Roadhouse. Now here I am!

How long have you been managing this site?

I’ve been in the role for just over 2 months now so still very fresh.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My typical day, like most just starts with a coffee. I then set aside some time, see how everyone is going and where they need help. After that I’m all about planning and goal setting, and then into executing those goals while juggling all the other hiccups that can happen throughout the day.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a site manger?

For me, the biggest challenge as a site manager is all the unknown issues (Tech or machinery usually) that can happen throughout the day. Sometimes these can really throw a spanner in all of your plans for the day.

What do you find most rewarding about your job?

The most rewarding part of my role would have to be working with the team to achieve goals and improve the site!

What do you think makes your site special?

I think the main thing that makes my site special is having a fair few long standing and committed staff members that know every regular truckie and every local and their stories from over the years.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Outside of work, my main hobbies would be fishing when I can get away, working on cars, spending time with my partner and her family, and relaxing playing some games.

Coffee order or go-to road trip snack from the shop?

Definitely a cappuccino with 2 sugars. And favourite road trip snack would be beef jerky.

Introducing The Bridge Cafe & Fuel

This year we continued our network revitalisation, commencing with The Bridge Cafe & Fuel!

With fantastic operators, busy location and expansive fresh food offer, the site was due for an uplift and rebrand to match.

Beginning with the rebrand, we wanted to promote in the new name and logo all that The Bridge Cafe & Fuel has to offer, including both the cafe and fuel elements, along with a fresh new look for both the external facade and internal refurbishment.

Along with the expansive fresh food offer, customers are now welcomed by a fully refurbished store with all new counter joinery, new cold unit, sandwhich prep unit, coffee machine, fully painted interior to continue the rebrand colour scheme and new shelving to compliment the in store convenience offer.

If you're seeking a fantastic breakfast, lunch, dinner, fuel or convenience goods, call in and see Aaron, Linda and the team at The Bridge Cafe & Fuel... 90 Seventh Street, Mildura

The ACAPMA Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Rowan Lee as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Association, effective Friday 9 May 2025.

Rowan steps into the role with a strong experience in corporate affairs, government engagement, and stakeholder relations. He most recently served as Public Affairs Manager at 7-Eleven Australia, where he was instrumental in shaping national conversations on key policy and regulatory issues affecting the Australian Fuel & Convenience sector.

In his new role at ACAPMA, Rowan will draw on his deep knowledge of Australia’s policy and regulatory environment to lead industry advocacy efforts and drive member-focused service delivery across industrial relations, training, regulatory compliance, and strategic engagement.

Rowan’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the fuel wholesale and retail industry, as businesses contend with continuing and likely future changes in the Australian Industrial Relations ecosystem, rising operational costs, shifting consumer preferences, and the growing challenges of accommodating Australia’s Net Zero 2050 ambitions. With his background in building strong stakeholder partnerships and managing complex regulatory portfolios, Rowan is well positioned to guide the Association through this next chapter.

“I am delighted to welcome Rowan to the team. Rowan’s deep experience in public affairs and stakeholder engagement, coupled with his knowledge of the industry, aligns strongly with the strategic priorities of our Association”, said ACAPMA President Wade Death.

“The Board looks forward to working closely with him to ensure that ACAPMA remains squarely focused on the bona fide interests of our members – and continues to deliver high-quality services across advocacy, industrial relations, training, and compliance support,” Wade added.

“It’s a genuine privilege to be appointed CEO of ACAPMA,” said Rowan Lee.

“Our industry is a dynamic and essential industry that plays a critical role in the daily lives of Australians and in the broader national economy. I look forward to working closely with the Board, the ACAPMA team, and our members to deliver meaningful advocacy and practical support during a time of both great challenge and great opportunity” Rowan added.

In preparation for assuming full responsibility in July, Rowan will work closely with current ACAPMA CEO Mark McKenzie and the ACAPMA Board over the coming two months. This transitional period will be punctuated by some pre-arranged personal leave in late May and early June, after which Rowan will resume induction activities and begin engaging directly with members, partners, and government stakeholders.

The ACAPMA Board is confident that Rowan’s leadership will further strengthen the Association’s role as a trusted voice for the fuel and convenience industry and ensure continued delivery of high-value support to member businesses across Australia.
