A note from our Managing Director...

The Christmas holiday greeting is a perfect time to remind you how much I appreciate your hard work on behalf of the TASCO group.

It takes a multitude of different skills and efforts across the variety of administrative, retail, logistical and wholesale tasks that go into making each day a success in safely serving our customers across the vast regional footprint we now trade across.

So, to each and everyone across the length and breadth of TASCO's territory please accept that your efforts have again combined in 2024 to ensure a safe and successful year as we are about to embark on our sixty ninth year of operation in 2025.

I hope you enjoy a wonderful Christmas and new year season filled with the people and traditions that mean the most to you.

Wishing you some well-deserved downtime over the holidays. You’ve earned it!

Merry Christmas to you and yours,

A note from our General Manager...

Hi & welcome to the 5th edition of our Network News.

I’d like to begin with acknowledging the passing in October of a long-term staff member of ours, Belinda Perry. Belinda started with TASCO, way back in 1988. As our Accounts Payable Manager for most of those years, her work ethic and organisational skillset were second to none. With 36 years of service, Belinda leaves behind a legacy of consistent contribution and for that we thank her.

In the last 12 months we have seen some significant change. From an IT perspective, we have now fully migrated into the cloud with both our Microsoft Office and accounting system platforms. Retail has seen us busy with new branding, site upgrades and a full Point of Sale rollout. Our Carrier’s division is also expanding, highlighted by the addition of some new prime movers & trailer sets. Our Carriers Manager Steve Rose explains more on page 22.

Our wholesale arm has some head wind this year with the challenges thus far. With a dry growing season combined with patches of frost and hail, then late unseasonal rain, harvest has generally been below average across the board.

From a growth perspective, we have been working with Ampol to expand our Distribution area which exists in and around Murray Bridge, to now include the Adelaide Hills, Adelaide Metro & south throughout the Fleurieu Peninsula.

These are exciting times. It’s the first foray for our business into a metro area. There will be challenges ahead, and to this point, I’d like to thank Steve Cheriton, our Murray Bridge Depot Manager & his entire team for their efforts thus far.

Our annual conference was held in Melbourne this year in October. Our awards ceremony & gala night was well represented. Worthy award winners were..

• Wholesale Depot of the year, Benalla Depot

• Retail site of the year, St Arnaud

• Business Innovation, Ronan Ban (Retail Area Manager) and Emma Hamence (Marketing Co-Ordinator)

• HSSE Champion, Benji Seers (Benalla Driver)

• Service Excellence, Drew May (Regional Manager)

• Community Engagement, John Carra (Regional Manager)

I’d like to congratulate these winners, along with honourable mentions to all other nominees.

As we approach the festive season, please take this opportunity to down tools and spend some time with family & friends if you’re able. To our staff, we thankyou for the effort put in this year. To our business partners we pass on our appreciation for the last 12 months and look forward to the year ahead.

Stay safe, enjoy this edition and thanks again for reading.

Celebrating Retirement

On the 1st of July 2024, we wished Tony Prosser, our Depot Manager at Murray Bridge, all the best as he enters retirement.

Tony began employment with TASCO through the acquisition of Barrett Petroleum in 2013 and remained an integral part of our business in South Australia ever since.

With Tony's retirement, we would like to introduce and welcome our new Depot Manager of Murray Bridge, Steve Cheriton.

Steve has already became a valued member of our business through his role as we expand with further fuel supply in South Australia expanding his role and responsibilities. Welcome to the TASCO family Steve!

We wish Tony all the best as he enjoys his retirement with his family and wife Judy.

As part of this years R U OK day, we invited our staff to host a morning tea on Thursday the 12th of September to help spread awareness and ask the simple question R U OK?

Sites were encouraged to get creative using resources from R U OK, and enjoy a morning tea together.

R U OK DAY

R U OK is a national suicide prevention charity that encourages people to stay connected and have conversations that can help others through difficult times.

Their work focuses on building the motivation, confidence and skills of the help-giver – the person who can have a meaningful conversation with someone who is struggling with life. R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention efforts by encouraging people to invest more time in their personal relationships and building the capacity of informal support networks – friends, family and colleagues - to be alert to those around them, have a conversation if they identify signs of distress or difficulty and connect someone to appropriate support, long before they're in crisis.

How can you create the conversation?

R U OK? Inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life. You don't need to be an expert to reach out - just a good friend and a great listener.

Use these four steps and have a conversation that could change a life:

1. Ask R U

Our donations are growing..

The current total TASCO Petroleum donations by our staff to lifeblood is 44. Lives saved, 132!

Thank you to our donors, hold your head high. Great work!

How can I become a donor?

We were proud sponsors of the 2024 Ford NSW OPEN Tournament held at Murray Downs Golf & Country Club.

The tournament was an incredible event for the Swan Hill community, with it being the third richest golf tournament in Australia and televised nationally with coverage on channel 7Plus.

With the addition of Cameron Smith playing in the tournament, Golf NSW declared it "the biggest golfing event since Norman played in the 80’s!”.

A hugely successful event for Swan Hill and the wider community.

On Friday the 8th of November, Compass Group finalists gathered for their Star Awards ceremonies.

The Star Awards ceremonies recognise the outstanding talent that makes Compass Group Australia a leader in food and support services. We would like to congratulate Anne Parker, from our Ampol Narrandera site, who won the NSW/ACT Service Champion Award!

This award recognises individual employees who directly engage with customers, clients, employees, residents or guests and those that create multiple, memorable service experiences. Anne is pictured below (centre) with Riley and Elias (NSW Operations Manager) at the Awards Night held at WestHQ in Sydney with her Award. Congratulations Anne!

On the 8th - 10th of October our Annual TASCO Conference was held at the Amora Riverwalk Hotel in Richmond.

Melbourne Newport Terminal

The conference began with TASCO's Ampol Business Manager, Peter Moran taking a group on a tour of the Ampol Newport Terminal.

An incredible experience for our staff to get first hand knowledge of the operational aspect of fuel transport and handling, prior to drivers collecting.

At the end of the tour, staff were then shown the Newport operations hub for Ron Finemore Transport. Scott Cooper from Ron Finemore Transport introduced staff to Cameron Kempson, Operations Planner for Ron Finemore Transport Bulk Liquids Division. Cameron's responsibility is to effectively and efficiently plan and execute deliveries to fuel customers, utilising metro and regionally based fleet and drivers. He manages, monitors and maintains fuel leaves as per customers requirements, TASCO Petroleum included. Staff were amazed at Cameron's skill and also the technology and knowledge he has at hand.

On conclusion of the Newport Terminal tour, all staff assembled in the conference room at the Amora Riverwalk for a team session, TASCO's Lego Masters.

TASCO Lego Masters was a team building activity that challenged small groups in design thinking, problem solving, iterative learning, effective planning and rapid deployment of ideas. It is was enjoyable, engaging and specifically designed to enhance our staff connections and interactions with one another. A great afternoon indeed with some fantastic creations by staff and the winners crowned.

Day one.

The conference commenced with presentations from external guest speakers and also internal staff presentations.

Speaking to the group about all things finance was Joel George & Praveen Gounder from Commonwealth Bank, Danielle Jones from William Buck presented on superannuation and Dr Tim Driscoll from the Royal Flying Doctor Services spoke to the group about supportive conversations within the workplace.

After morning tea the group session panel commenced with internal speakers Steve Rose TASCO Carriers Manager and Jason Wells TASCO Lubricants & Marketing Manager joined by external guest speakers Kevin Rodda from Ron Finemore Transport and Peter Moran from Ampol to discuss all things wholesale, TASCO business and industry related.

After lunch the group then settled in for a presentation on all things retail with our Retail Director Mark Hughes and Retail Manager Pete Jessup. To compliment the retail focus, Kosta Soldatos from New Sunrise Group presented afterwards, going through each TASCO operated site and giving further information about what New Sunrise Group is currently working on.

To conclude the day, Rob Watson and Donella Corbett from Ampol presented. Rob gave an update of Ampols projects they have been working on and insights on industry related topics. Donella then presented on a hot topic for many businesses, customer service.

That evening, staff and external guests and business partners were invited to TASCO's annual Gala Evening that is held at a surprise location each year...

Day two.

After an incredible night at the Gala Evening, the final day of the conference had come around quickly!

Zac Amos from ASI started the day off with a presentation about Cyber security, followed by Daniel Simko from Credit Watch complimenting the Cyber Security presentation with an informative presentation about the current trends shaping credit risk management.

Elisha Radwanowski, Executive Manager of Employment and Compliance at ACAPMA then presented on the Employment Landscape within our industry.

Following on from Elisha's presentation, we then delved into the health, safety, security and environment side of the business with our HSSE managers Rob Bond & Lannette Hunstone presenting.

Overall, our 2024 TASCO Connect Conference was a great success in connecting with our staff and external business partners. We thank our staff for their attendance and also our guests who joined us throughout.

SPOT THE HAZARDS

In August, TASCO joined the Farm Angels "Flanno for a Farmer" campaign, donning "flannos" in conjunction with major corporate sponsors of Farm Angels and the Flanno for a farmer cause, Ampol Australia Pty Ltd.

Who are Farm Angels?

Farm Angels was established as Drought Angels in 2014 to respond to the needs of primary producers impacted by prolonged drought, initially in Queensland. Since then, the organisation has expanded to provide financial assistance, food hampers, care packs, and mental wellbeing support to over 4,700 primary producers affected by all natural disasters (drought, flood, fire, and plagues) in over 1,300 communities across Australia. The frequency and severity of natural disasters mean many are at risk of losing their farm or walking away. According to a 2021 study, one farmer completes suicide every 10 days (59% higher than the rate among non-farmers). Farm Angels seeks to reduce this through phone conversations and on farm visits. By supporting these farmers to stay on the land through assistance tailored to their individual needs, Farm Angels contributes to Australia’s regional economies, food security and the social wellbeing of rural communities.

What is Flanno for a farmer?

"We're asking fellow Aussies to support their Aussie farmers by donning a "flanno" and donating a fiver because we always need our farmers to sustain our nation, but it's important to recognise that sometimes they need us too!

Through drought, floods, fires, plagues and more; the conditions are tough and so are our farmers, but just because they can handle a heck of a lot, doesn’t mean they should have to.

The frequency and severity of natural disasters mean many are at risk of losing their farm or walking away, and according to a 2021 study, one farmer completes suicide every 10 days which is a staggering 59% higher than the rate among non-farmers,

This is not something that we can ignore and we ask for your help to show farmers we care, we stand by them and we support them. Every dollar raised goes to Farm Angels who provide tangible support for farmers through financial assistance, food hampers, care packs, and mental wellbeing support to over thousands of primary producers affected by all natural disasters (drought, flood, fire, and plagues) in over 1,300 communities across Australia."

While there's never an easy day on the land, Farm Angels help make the really tough days a little easier.

Driving our network

A lot has happened over the past few months so I will try and remember the big ticket items we have dealt with and or achieved..

New Equipment

Exciting times at Murray Bridge where we finally achieved something that we have spoken about for a number of years. The introduction of the 19 meter BDouble into the Murray Bridge fleet. This will allow better utilisation and allow for us to be more competitive with larger direct delivery customers. A big thanks to Stephen Webb, Tony, and Steve Cheriton for their help in integrating this unit into the daily work environment.

More exciting news is that we have finally seen the second 30 meter “A” double come in the business and is located at Mildura. This has seen the Mildura operation go from 1 rigid and a rural trader to 2 small semis, 1 rural trader, 1 25 meter BDouble, and a 30 meter “A” double while driver numbers have gone from 4 to 8. This puts us in a fantastic position to now take on all the retail volume in the Mildura area as well as giving us great opportunity to grow the business. There is a lot of work that goes into the implementation of these types of changes with driver training, extra scheduling and truck management. This couldn’t be done without the excellent work that has been put in by John, Reece, Terry and the team at Mildura depot.

Further Expansion

The exciting news continues with the changes now being worked through to integrate around 22 million litres of cartage into our fleet with expansion into Adelaide. This is all new as we work away at bringing in new drivers, finding equipment to be able to do the work and then working our way through how we manage and integrated into our business. There will be further challenges ahead but with the work already done by John, Paul, and Steve Cheriton we have a sound starting point.

Here is a snapshot of the Ampol Adelaide business:

78 service work delivery sites

2 x Retail sites

1 x Depot with OPT

2 new drivers, 1 @ north Adelaide and 1 @ Littlehampton

Looking Ahead

As we enter a new financial year there are challenges ahead as we remain committed to ensuring that our equipment is maintained to a level that ensures that every time we leave a depot the equipment that we are using is in a roadworthy condition. By doing this there will be times when equipment will be off the road for long periods of time, and this will cause some frustration, but it is the world we live into remain as safe as possible. The pressure on repairers we use is getting harder as they are struggling with staff numbers and getting suitably qualified staff to work through their workshops.

From our daily compliance management systems, we should congratulate our drivers as we continue to see a decline in breaches on a daily basis. We have seen a steady decline in incidents that involve the Guardian Camera system, which is very encouraging, however we can not afford to take our eye of the ball. Compliance is the one big thing that if the word changed to Non-Compliant can undo all our hard work.

From the whole TASCO Carriers Management Team we would like to wish everyone and their families a safe and happy festive season for 2024 and all the best for the upcoming year 2025.

A big thankyou to all our drivers, depot staff and others that have contributed to ensuring that we have managed to achieve our goals for the year 2024. Well done and again thankyou.

NHVR urges truck drivers to keep safety front of mind amid prolonged wet weather conditions and the start of the holiday season

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has issued an urgent reminder to the nation's truck drivers and operators to check their heavy vehicle fleets are up to scratch, amid predictions of above-average rainfall and increased traffic on the roads.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto OAM said drivers and operators should be making safety and preparedness a top priority, emphasising that risky driving behaviour combined with adverse weather conditions could prove to be a dangerous combination.

“We’re calling on industry to be extra cautious when checking their vehicles before each journey commences, ensuring routine vehicle maintenance is up to date and pre-departure maintenance checks have been completed,” Mr Petroccitto said. “This includes testing windshield wipers as well as their lights, including headlights, hazard lights and brake lights, and inspecting their vehicle’s tyres to ensure they are in top condition.

“Even minor defects can have serious consequences, especially with poor weather presenting further challenges such as reduced visibility, slippery roads and longer stopping distances.

“Faulty or ineffective brakes are a serious safety concern, and as prolonged and intense rainfall hits parts of the country, the risks are amplified,” he said.

“A well-maintained braking system with correctly adjusted brakes is essential in any situation, especially when driving through the wet weather conditions we have been experiencing recently.”

The NHVR recommends drivers undertake a daily check of their vehicle prior to commencing their journey, using a pre-start checklist such as the NHVR’s Daily Safety Checklist, which covers areas such as brakes, couplings and wheels and tyres.

Mr Petroccitto said NHVR Safety and Compliance Officers are also at the roadside, ready to inform and educate drivers and assist them with their compliance where required.

“Our officers have spent more than 1,400 hours providing one-on-one driver education at the roadside so far this year across all NHVR jurisdictions, on heavy vehicle roadworthiness alone,” Mr Petroccitto said.

“Drivers are always encouraged to have a chat to our officers

Festive Road Safety: The Fatal Five

Driving Fatigue

Introduction

Fatigue is a contributing factor in 20-30% of all crashrelated fatalities and severe injuries on Australian roads1

In most industries, a demand for excellence means greater output, increased profitability and extended around-theclock working hours. However, working 24/7 can come at the expense of health and safety for workers, especially with an increased risk of work-related driving fatalities and serious injuries caused by fatigue.

Recommendations

Plan your journey ahead of time so that you avoid fatigue.

A Glance at

Issue

Compared to 8 hours, the risk of crashing after 5 hours of sleep is 4.4 times more4.

x 4.4 risk of crashing

8hrs of sleep 5hrs of sleep

Fatigue-related road incidents cost workers, families, and the Australian economy around $3 billion each year5 .

The only real solution for fatigue is rest. Do not rely on caffeine, energy drinks, loud music or rolling the window down.

• Impairs cognitive performance

• Reduces tolerance for other road users

• Increases fluctuations in speed

Know your personal early warning signs of fatigue and, when you experience them, Take a break and if possible, take a power nap.

Retail Review 2024

As the festive season approaches, bringing with it one of the busiest trading periods for TASCO’s Retail Network, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our retail team members, site managers, area managers, commission agents and business partners for yet another successful year. To say 2024 has been busy would be an understatement..

QuickFuel Point of Sale

TASCO were informed in mid 2023 that we would need to move away from Ampol’s proprietary point of sale systems and find a suitable replacement with a view to have this completed by June 2024. R&D began in Q4 2023 with several POS providers being looked at before settling on the QuickFuel offering. After several onsite meetings and training sessions in our Bendigo Depot with key stakeholders, our first pilot sites were rolled out in March. Following the success of this pilot program the full project began in April with 36 sites and 55 POS being installed by the end of June. A huge effort from the implementation team as well as our site management and staff at each location –thank you all for making this a success.

Network Revitalisation

2024 saw TASCO commit funding to several exciting site upgrade and refresh projects;

Ouyen

The Ouyen Roadhouse marks the first of our ‘TASCO Roadhouse” branded sites, with several more in the pipeline. This site underwent a full renovation of the retail and dining space as well as the full rebrand of the exterior. The results speak for themselves. From both an aesthetic and sales perspective, Ouyen has been given quite a lift!

Wodonga Roadhouse

Wimpy’s Wodonga is back – Harking back to a name that has been familiar with this site from many years ago and something the location is still affectionately known as along the highway – Wimpy’s has made a comeback. New name, new logo and new colour scheme – same exceptional food and service. Wimpy’s now has the looks to match the offer it provides.

The Bridge Café & Fuel

Mildura’s Seventh St “Bridge Servo” has undergone its external upgrade with the launch of “The Bridge Café & Fuel”. New colours, lighting and branding have given the location a whole new look. 2025 will bring with it an internal upgrade with new counters, seating area and displays which will then complete the look and feel and complement and enhance the excellent food offerings available from this location.

Big Bite

TASCO is in the process of launching a new retail brand for our food sites. “Big Bite Convenience” has started making its way into our network, beginning with our Oz Pride location in Mildura. A new Logo, colour schemes, menus and a focus on fresh, watch out for others popping up throughout our region in 2025!

What’s Next?

We are looking forward to a huge 2025. Our retail, marketing and management teams are putting together several projects across all 3 states we currently operate in – there are exciting times ahead with more branding, refurbishments and upgrades further strengthening our offer and our network as a whole. I wish everyone a very safe & happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year and look forward to an exciting 2025.

Pete Jessup Retail Manager

Wimpy's Wodonga

Rebrand

Welcome back Wimpy's Wodonga!

Wimpy’s Wodonga holds an important place within the TASCO network. Being one of our largest company run sites, Wimpy’s employs in excess of 20 local staff and provides essential services such as fuel, food and convenience items to locals and travellers alike as well as providing a place for transport operators to have a break, take a shower and enjoy a good meal at a good price. Bringing back the “Wimpy’s” name was the next logical step for this site after seeing how often the location is referred to as “Wimpy’s” or “The Old Wimpy” on social media posts. This also tied in with a refresh of the sites façade and signage which has given it a whole new look and feel.

Wimpy’s continues to show outstanding growth & resilience despite many other fuel retailers entering the local market. This is testament to the entire TASCO team at this location and the great value food and convenience items on offer. Confirmation that Wimpy’s really is part of the local community.

Wimpy's Wodonga 178 Melbourne Rd, Wodonga VIC 3690 (02) 6024 1983

Ouyen Roadhouse

Restoring a local favourite!

This year, we set our sights on a completing a full renovation and rebrand of our site Ouyen Roadhouse. Ouyen is a town in Victoria, located at the junction of the Calder Highway and Mallee Highway, 105 kilometres south of Mildura, and 441 km northwest of Melbourne. Due to its location on a busy highway, Ouyen is one of our busiest sites, for both food and fuel sales. Originally a BP, then Caltex and now Ampol, Ouyen Roadhouse was in need of an uplift both internally and externally.

Customers are now welcomed by a fully refurbished store that provides a comfortable dine in option, large convenience offer along with a great range of food options. Next time you're on the road, call in and see Leeanne, Phil & the team at Ouyen Roadhouse and check it out..
