in the swim Good luck to Henry Oliver and Ryan Wheeler, from Tarporley High School, who are competing in the National Swimming Championships in Sheffield this month. The 13-year-olds have done brilliantly to qualify, putting in mammoth early morning sessions in the pool. Also in this month’s edition we have pictures from the Tarvin Village Fete, Tattenhall summer fair and Tarporley Carnival, the Tarporley Primary School prom, and events at Tarvin and Tarporley Women’s Institutes.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Kelsall, Tarvin &

Bunbury areas and Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends

and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

TARPORLEY PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER Neighbourhood Plan update

Community involvement

Thanks to all for the many and detailed contributions following the public consultation on the draft Neighbourhood Plan. Detailed comments were provided by Cheshire West Council, interested parties such as developers, agents and landowners as well as residents and local groups. As you can imagine, there are many contrasting views but a lot of useful comment. These are being worked through in great detail to try and ensure that we capture the relevant points and appropriate amendments are now being made prior to its final submission.

The Best Kept Village Competition team are due to inspect us very shortly but just because we are being inspected should not be the only time we focus on taking care of our how we look. This is a case of every little helps.

Village’s parking and traffic This will continue to remain a high priority for the Parish Council and we have already made some important progress. • Organised to redesign and re-line the public car park behind the Rising Sun, creating 9 more spaces and reducing confusion about where it is legal to park. • Assisted the Community Centre to repair, redesign and re-line the Centre car park, creating 20 more car parking spaces. • Supported the High School who have redesigned part of their front entrance to add additional places. As always, we can all do our bit by being that little more considerate when we park so as to avoid causing an obstruction or danger to passers-by or other road users. A call to local dog walkers May we please request that all those walking their dogs around the village to please ensure that you pick up after your dog and deposit the bags in the bins provided. So far the Parish Council budget does not stretch to a dog poo warden but we are open to volunteers!

Many will have seen the small shrub beds that have popped up at a number of points in the village which will take time to get established. Work on these will continue. Many hedges are also sprouting large shoots and so please may we ask you to keep these trimmed back so that they don’t overhang the pavements. If you feel that you can contribute to a better looking village in any way such as if you have green fingers or particular skills or knowledge that can be freely provided to help the village, please contact the Parish Clerk tel: 01948 861035) or mail clerk@tarporley.org.uk as we are always pleased to receive help. First responders update Following the article about Community First Responders in last month’s Tarporley Talk, we have had an encouraging expression of interest. We do however need more people who would be prepared to volunteer. The Tarporley area is quite large and ideally we require a couple more people who would be prepared to become CFR’s. You will be given full training by North West Ambulance Service and support by the Tarporley and Tattenhall local CFR group. This is a very worthwhile way of supporting your local community. If someone has a cardiac arrest, for every minute without life saving intervention they lose 10% of their chances of survival. With a Community First Responder being local they can be on scene in a very short time and that can make a significant difference to a person’s life chances Please consider volunteering. For further details contact the Tarporley Parish Council Clerk.

Parish Council Meetings Second Monday of each month (except August) in the Committee Room of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7 pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30 pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk to one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis. Outstanding Large Planning Applications At the time of writing – early July, still no news for the application on Daffodil Fields (28 dwellings) but we now know that Arderne Home Farm (45 houses) has been rejected by our local Council’s Planning Officers.. Also it appears that the current planning application has been withdrawn for Brickyards Farm (48 dwellings) and the public inquiry for land off Rode Street (100 dwellings) has been adjourned until later this year.

Glitz and glamour in Tarvin Tarvin WI celebrated the Women’s Institute centenary with a Glam and Glitz party on the evening at Tarvin Community Centre. Everyone was in a party mood when they arrived and soon the hall was filled with glamorous guests sitting at decorated tables and conversation was soon buzzing. The speaker for the evening was Eric Newton who entertained with a variety of stories about his 31 years as ‘Life as a Busker.’ After his talk he played background jazz music to everyone’s enjoyment. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month at Tarvin Community Centre, at 7.30pm. New members and visitors are welcome.

Hot ladies vote Sue as their Pudding Queen! Fifty ladies enjoyed the Tarporley Women’s Institute Pudding & Pimms evening last month. They sampled nine delicious desserts, and enjoyed jugs of Pimms. The voting was very close, and the winner, Tarporley WI’s pudding Queen of 2015, was announced as Sue Wall for her sticky toffee pudding. On the hottest day of the year, the foodie quiz was won by the aptly named ‘Hot Ladies’! Everyone had a great time, and we are hoping to make this an annual event. The winner, Sue Wall, pictured top left, receiving her victory trophy from President Abigail Webb. 16 To advertise call 01244 350398 www.tarporleytalk.com

Look up....

and use all the space in your home We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of

the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. Fantastic end to the school year Year 11 students at Tarporley High celebrated the end of their school year in style at The Doubletree Hilton in Chester. Students had been excited for many months leading up to the event and the prom committee had been working hard to ensure it was a night for all to remember. After arriving in a variety of transport modes and walking down the red carpet, students enjoyed a ‘mocktail’ and were able to spend time in the photo studio. There was a lot of fun dressing up in the photobooth and the night concluded with a good boogie on the dancefloor. The atmosphere was buzzing as students and staff made their way back to school on the coaches provided and it was clear to see that all had a fantastic TARPORLEY TALK SUGAR & SPICE.pdf 1 09/07/2015 11:20 time.

Do you want to make a difference?

The Bunbury Agency has been expanding its daily care services. We urgently need more experienced local carers, who are able to look after our clients in and between the areas of Tarporley,Nantwich, Malpas, Whitchurch, Tarvin and Chester.

What our carers say…. It took me a while to have the confidence to give up my permanent job with the local authority, but I am glad I did. I now work fewer hours to suit my lifestyle and still earn a good living. The main benefit however is being able to do my job in a less stressful way knowing that I really am making a difference to someone else’s life. I would highly recommend anyone who passionately believes that elderly people should remain living in their own homes, to register with Bunbury. They treat their carers as they treat their clients with kindness, understanding and compassion.

All our carers are self employed BUT, they all say that they have a better experience with Bunbury. The hourly rate starts at £10 per hour weekdays and £12 per hour at weekends, plus 45 pence per mile travel allowance. Every booking is for a minimum of 1 hour, because we believe it is important to spend a little extra time with each client, develop a relationship and give them some general companionship. Sometimes you may be asked to sleep over for a night or even a weekend. The starting wage for this is £80 per night, waking nights are more. Sometimes you may be working alongside one of our live in carers and providing cover for their 2 hour break.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

If you would like to discuss the many options available, please contact us on 01829 260280 to make an appointment. Sarah Green – Director

Choose your hours and your clients You will be given full details of your clients in advance, as we like to match your experience and personality to their needs and requirements. Your hours can be flexible to suit your other engagements such as school runs, medical appointments and holidays. Once we know that you and our clients are happy, you will become one of their regular carers, sometimes exclusively and sometimes as a team.

health & beauty with Angela Bartlett

SUN PROTECTION By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Q. What is the best type of sun protection to use when I’m on holiday? A. The best form of sun protection is clothing, including a hat. However, if you don’t want to cover up then choosing a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30 is essential. In addition to selecting a high factor sunscreen it is important to reapply at regular intervals and to apply it generously. There are two types of sunscreen to choose from: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens work by reflecting the rays of the sun; ingredients to look for are zinc and titanium dioxide. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens protect the skin by absorbing the suns rays; an example of a good chemical sunscreen ingredient is avobenzone which gives broad spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays to help prevent burning and skin damage. If you have very sensitive skin, a physical sunscreen is often the better choice as some people can have allergies to chemical sunscreens. For more information about the best type of sunscreen to protect your skin pop in and see us at Sensoria for free Face Mapping. Q. What is your top tip for getting the most even application of fake tan? A. My best tip for getting an immaculate fake tan application is exfoliation. Twenty four hours before you apply your tan, exfoliate your body thoroughly with either a body scrub or body mitt. This will help to slough off the dead, dry skin cells that fake tan is inclined to cling onto giving a patchy effect. It will also allow the active tanning ingredients to work more evenly on the fresher skin cells that the exfoliation has revealed. Exfoliating your skin also helps the tan to ‘wear off’ more evenly, allowing you to enjoy your gorgeous tan for longer. Remember always use exfoliating products designed to be used with tanning products as the oils in some exfoliators can create a barrier to the active tanning ingredients. And one more tip …. always moisturise dry areas such as hands, feet, knees and elbows!

VJ DAY COMMEMORATION The Royal British Legion is the national custodian of Remembrance so, on Sunday 16th August, the Tarporley Branch will be commemorating the 70th anniversary of Victory in Asia (VJ day) and the end of World War II, writes Ernest Boynes. In May we commemorated VE Day which signalled the end of hostilities in the European theatre. In the Far East, however, the Fourteenth Army, nearly a million strong, comprising British, Indian, Australian, New Zealand other Commonwealth, Chinese and allied forces continued to fight a war in the horrendous tropical conditions of heat, heavy rain and impenetrable jungle, where it could take a day to advance two miles, against an opposing Japanese army, battle hardened and fanatical. The Japanese attempt to invade and conquer allied forces in India had been held at Kohima near the Burmese border and now was the time to push forward, defeat the Japanese relieve Burma and Malaya and open up the road to China. At the same time the US Army supported by the US and Royal Navy was capturing island after island in the Pacific, getting nearer and nearer to the Japanese mainland. Such was the situation when the Americans dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Japanese surrendered. On Sunday 16th August at 10am, The Royal British Legion will attend Communion followed by a Service of Commemoration, conducted by the Rev.Georgina Watmore, around the Cenotaph at St. Helen’s Tarporley. All members of the public are invited to attend. The few active Members of the Tarporley Branch are, for the most part, elderly and not as agile as they were a few years ago, so are unable to organise the Poppy Appeal in November. If any of the younger but less active Members of the Legion or member of the public would volunteer to be the Poppy Appeal Organiser he or she will have all the support that can be given by the few active Members. Without a Poppy Appeal Organiser there will be no Poppy Appeal collection in Tarporley this November, the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Please help by contacting the Branch Secretary E. Butcher on 01829 732704

Plan is nearing completion! The completed Neighbourhood Plan will be considered for approval at an Extraordinary Meeting of Bunbury Parish Council on Wednesday 19th August, 7pm at The Playing Fields Pavilion. Finishing touches are being applied to the plan before the draft version is discussed for the last time by the Neighbourhood Plan Group. Providing the Parish Council approve the plan it will then be sent to Cheshire East Council, after which a further period

of six weeks statutory consultation will take place and it will also be posted on the group’s website (www.bunburynpg.org). The next stages, examination by a Planning Inspector and a local Referendum, giving Bunbury residents an opportunity to vote on the plan, will follow as soon as they can be arranged.

Everything in the garden is rosy! Utkinton Primary School enjoyed the idyllic surroundings of Tirley Garth while honouring a longstanding tradition of the Utkinton Garden Fete in late June. This year was rather special because Rose Queen Jodie Johnson and Retiring Queen Emily Lloyd-Simons enjoyed the extra surprise of a Clydesdale horse-drawn carriage. The football tournament went to a nail-biting finale between Utkinton and Kelsall, with Kelsall emerging victorious. In addition, the dance companies; Pointeworks and The South Cheshire School of Dance did fabulous routines. Extra games for the children this year included a play area with balls and apparatus, in addition to, wellie throwing, coconut shy, hook a duck and gardening activities.

Tarporley allotments under threat Tarporley’s allotments were established in the early-1970’s and since then have provided a much-needed resource for those wishing to benefit from some gentle exercise while producing a variety of healthy vegetables, delicious fruit and beautiful flowers. The allotment society has hosted a huge number of activities such as shows of annual produce, assisting the primary school with their allotment patch and other competitions which have served to bring friends and neighbours even closer together so helping to foster a healthy community spirit. In celebration of the allotments founding all those decades ago, the Tarporley Allotment Holders Society will be holding a free Grand Open Day on Sunday 23rd August from 1.30pm. Plot-holders will be on hand to discuss the minutiae of fruit and vegetable growing with all comers and will be delighted to talk to prospective plot-holders about how to get started. Exciting events for children are planned and also, there will be representatives from other organisations e.g. The Cheshire Wildlife Trust who will be advising on insect-friendly flower gardening.

An Uncertain Future The landowner of Tarporley’s allotments and the adjacent bowling green is the Royal British Legion which is in the process of selling outright to a developer. At time of writing, the developer intends removing over half the allotment plots which will be replaced by a mix of 2/3 bedroom houses. The bowling green and clubhouse is to be replaced by an apartment block. Please show your support for our treasured allotments and bowling green by attending our Open Day where more information will be available. l The Tarporley Allotment Holders Society has 38 plots of various sizes and, despite a healthy waiting list, there are often plots available for immediate use. The allotments are affiliated to the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners and are also registered with CWAC as an Asset of Community Value. wharri1061@aol.com
