D-day looms for traveller site plans Plans to build a traveller site at the old Foxfields pub have been put on display. Cheshire West and Chester Council held three drop-in sessions about the proposed traveller transit site, on Poole Hall Road, near Rivacre Valley. Each pitch would accommodate two touring caravans and two parking spaces. The site would also include two electrical hook-ups, a standpipe of drinking water and drainage and shared bathrooms, rent will be charged on a daily basis. Councillor Angela Claydon, Cabinet Member Housing said: “The reason for proposing a transit site is to help reduce the number of unauthorised encampments on public or private land. Having a transit site will allow the police to direct groups to a suitable pitch on a site owned by the Council.” The borough experiences The picture from the online petition against the traveller site a high level of plans unauthorised encampments. There were 70 encampments between 1st April 2017 and 31st March 2018 with the majority being in Ellesmere Port and Chester. The Planning Committee on 24th October will be held in public at the Ellesmere Port Civic Hall and will be broadcast live online. An on-line petition opposing the plans has been started, already gaining 4,200 ‘signatures’. The petition argues that residents in the Overpool area strongly reject the proposal. They say that the traveller site will lower house prices and cause insurance premiums to rise over time. The petition alleges that there could be an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour and that it will spoil an area which is currently undergoing a housing regeneration with hundreds of new homes. It goes on to say: “We will not sit back and let our homes be thrown away for the sake of a gypsy site being built on our doorstep. “We want to live in a community that has a “community spirit” and one that our children are safe to play out in. “We will not allow our objection to be ignored by the council.” You can sign the petition at the change.org website and search for Ellesmere Port Gypsy site 6 Tel 01244 350398 www.talkaboutpublishing.co.uk

Little Sutton history revealed Did you know that Little Sutton once had a square, three banks and two blacksmiths? These are some of the facts revealed in a fascinating book about Little Sutton which has just been published. Little Sutton Memories is the latest production by the Ellesmere Port Local History Society, and their first foray into one of the ‘villages’ of the town. The book has been over two years in the making, with a small group of ‘Suttonites’ Pat and Dave Green, John Driscoll, John King, Nigel Rose and Ian Grove responsible for collating the stories along with Paul Harrison and Gary Gorman who helped with the old photographs. It traces the history of a number of local families, including the Parrys, Flavells and Joneses, whose descendants still live in the village. Most of the material goes back to the 19th century when the first photographs were taken, taking in notable events, a Titanic survivor, the impact of two world wars, how some businesses have stood the test of time – and how others disappeared and the fascinating changes in the village over the last century. Group co-ordinator Ian Grove says in the book: “This attempt at a brief history of Little Sutton is not a description of a village which no longer exists. Little Sutton is still here and, like every other village, town or city, it has simply changed as times have changed. “A large part of this book concerns events that have happened within living memory and while they describe a very different time, it is a relatively recent time.” The book, which features a foreword by Little Sutton resident and local MP Justin Madders, is available to view at local libraries and to buy at Ellesmere Port Central Library, Little Sutton Library, Ellesmere Port Boat Museum shop and the Trinity Methodist Church cafe in the centre of Ellesmere Port. For further information please email Ian Grove at i.grove@sky.com 8 Tel 01244 350398 www.talkaboutpublishing.co.uk

School stars get kitted out Pupils from Little Sutton CE Primary School have been able to kick-off the new term in style, following the delivery of a free Premier League Primary Stars kit for their football team. Little Sutton was awarded the free Nike kit, consisting of 15 football shirts, shorts and socks, after Miss Williams’ successful online application through the Premier League Primary Stars website. Premier League Primary Stars is available to primary schools across England and Wales and uses the appeal of the Premier League and professional football clubs to inspire girls and boys aged 5-11 to learn and be active. PLPrimaryStars.com offers primary school teachers free curriculum-linked resources in English, Maths, PE and PSHE, and opportunities for schools to enter competitions and access free offers like the Premier League Primary Stars Kit and Equipment scheme. Amy Williams, Year 4/5 teacher and PE co-ordinator, said: “Having a brand new kit will make such a huge difference to our school team. Wearing a kit that looks good will not only help the children feel amazing, but also I am hoping it may also encourage others to start playing the sport and become part of a team. Thank you very much Premier League Primary Stars”.

Village improvements may Plans to radically improve the village centre with the help of Redrow’s £355,000 may have to wait for another five years. The big changes have failed to get going due to the builder not being obliged to hand over money until considerably more houses are occupied in accordance with the agreement struck with the council.

The result is that the group will have to concentrate on achieving small improvements such as floral planters, benches, community notice boards, village welcome signs, wayfarer signage, new rubbish bins etc, paid for from the remainder of the £30,000 which Redrow had to pay up front. The full implementation of the concept design

Public Consultation A total of 60 responses were eventually received, only three from the business community though - but sincere thanks to those residents who did reply with a clear majority in favour of the overall proposals Answers to the specific questions asked revealed the following: - urgent need for on-street parking bays along the A41,with waiting time limited to 1 hour - improvements to the surfaces of the wide pavements to provide retail spill out areas - some opposition to the idea of having a cycle lane actually on the footpath - preference for a traditional, as opposed to a contemporary, type of lighting column - siting of trees will depend on whether it is physically possible to do so given the plethora of underground services beneath the pavements. Welcome signs The four ‘Village Welcome’ signs have been ordered and Highways have been asked to expedite their installation as soon as possible.

Well known and respected local bathroom and wetroom experts, Wirral Wetrooms have announced a massive quarter of a million pound investment and expansion project. Pulling on their industry leading design skills and extensive experience, the team have planned a show-stopping new look that is set to revolutionise their Irby showroom.

The first phase of the expansion to their upstairs showroom has begun with renovations to incorporate fully functional bathrooms settings including 10 operational showers and 12 working basins and taps all with the latest digital technology. Added to this under floor heating and a working sauna so clients can really ‘soak up’ the full Wirral Wetrooms offering. Owner Dave Sergison commented, ‘Customers will literally be able to

get a live demo of all the must-have bathroom accessories. You can turn showers on, see how they perform on different settings and see for yourself how the valves and knobs work. There will be full audio visual equipment along with high-tech LED lighting throughout.’

And you can even spend-a penny by sampling the fabulous new Geberit Aquaclean! Finally, complete the picture by choosing from a selection of their stunning tiles and you really be able to create a ‘tried and tested’ space to be proud of. Heart of Irby Village Dave and the team have always supported the local community in Irby and the surrounding areas, and played a part in the life and soul of the village and love being there,

Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.” “Our new showroom will be completely unique for the Wirral, and will revolutionise the experience of buying a new bathroom for our customers. We want nothing more than people to come in and try them out for themselves, even down to taking your shoes off and feel the under floor heating, you can even take a shower if you are game, we don’t mind!” And with service and quality and experience that is second to none, your will be sure to find your slice of Bathroom Bliss, right here in the heart of Irby.

A You don’t have to spend a vast amount of money to purchase a Geberit toilet. There are also less expensive models in the range such as the Geberit AquaClean 4000. This compact loo seat is designed to replace your existing loo seat and is straightforward to install, as it fits on the existing seat.

www.designpvcu.co.uk

The Geberit AquaClean range is comfortable and stylish too. And with a model to suit every style of home, it would make a perfect addition to your new spa-like bathroom.

176/178 Pensby Road (opp. Harvest Mouse) Heswall CH60 7RJ Email: sales@designpvcu.co.uk

Q Should I be concerned about how much water is used in spray-function toilets?

A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.

Q I’m really interested in buying a Geberit toilet with a spray function, but I have heard they’re very expensive. Are there any more affordable alternatives?

Hayley’s health and fitness

Lifestyle tips to get you fit and healthy Read the below for simple steps to becoming a healthy happier you. l Give yourself a realistic target and timescale to achieve. Be mindful that when weight comes off slowly it is more likely to stay off. l Avoid crash diets and quick fixes. Anything worth doing isn’t easy, you might lose 1st in two weeks crash dieting but then as soon as you eat normally you will gain your weight back and more! l You must get moving daily. Office jobs mean many of us are so far from reaching the recommended 10,000 steps a day, log yours with a pedometer and start increasing your steps. l Limit your amount of food, start using the scales to measure your food! When you read calories on the back of food its often based on servings/ grams. People often double this even triple portions to fill their plate. This means your literally eating double the calories per serving of food. l Take your time eating, avoid sitting in front of the TV to eat meals, chew your food properly it will tell your brain your full quicker. l How many take-aways are you having? If it’s more than one a month that’s too many!

l Exercise as well as diet, you might be less on the scales but if you still struggling to get up and down the stairs and can’t run for a bus without getting out of breath, it’s time to get your fitness up. Remember exercise as well as diet promotes all the internal benefits plus increasing muscle mass, which helps take pressure off your joints. l Be careful running, as soon as people diet they also hit to the pavements to shed the weight. Remember if you’re not used to running, build this up gradually, buy decent trainers to avoid impact, this isn’t always the quickest form of exercise to get results you want. Interval training has been proven to be more effective. l Drink lemon water, there are so many benefits to doing this daily, remember to drink more when exercising. l Cut out white bread. Opt for granary! l Remember you’re a role model to your child’s eating habits in later life. If they see you snacking all day on fast foods its likely they will think this is the norm, teach them good habits to prevent them from gaining excessive weight when they grow up.

l Don’t be fooled by ‘no added sugar’, this doesn’t mean there is No sugar in them! There are still natural sugars and carbohydrates, call remember check labels. 22 To advertise 01244to350398 www.talkaboutpublishing.co.uk

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Should I use a face mask? By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I’m using all the right face creams, so why should I use a face mask too? A. We are often asked this question as face masks are one of the least understood of all the beauty products. Personally, as a Therapist, I find them one of the easiest and most effective ways to give your skin a quick and effective boost, no matter what the skin type. This is because most masks contain an ingredient (usually butylene glycol), which works as a delivery agent and solvent, allowing your skin to absorb more of the other active ingredients in the product formulation. So, when choosing a face mask first decide on what you want to achieve from the product – deep cleansing, refining, hydration, moisturisation etc. Then check which are the main active ingredients to see if they will help you achieve your skin care goal. For more help on how to select the right mask for your skin visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk Q. How long do the results of a Rejuvapen treatment last?

Angela Bartlett is a highly qualified Advanced Aesthetician with over 34 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. She is a past Chairman for BABTAC & CIBTAC, teacher and International Examiner. Her expertise is currently called upon to judge national competitions, the provision training and quality treatments.

A. Unlike other temporary cosmetic treatments the results of Rejuvapen are long-lasting and ongoing. The collagen that is produced following a treatment takes 6-8 weeks to ‘mature’ to give the rejuvenating effects expected. The number of treatments required will depend upon the condition of your skin, age and expectations. Following a course of treatments clients usually return as they can see results and want to continue the progress. The results are effective, subtle and appeal to clients that do not want any chemical or foreign substances injected into their skin. Having said that, many clients have Rejuvapen in conjunction with treatments such as Botox, as they give a great overall improvement to the skin that injectable wrinkle softening treatments cannot achieve alone. GARDENING BY JANET WEEDS

Autumn tints in October

W

ith one of the driest summer of recent years this has not been great for gardeners. If you do want to plant anything out, firstly dig a hole at least 50% deeper and wider than the pot. Incorporate a lot of well rotted manure into the soil. This will act as a sponge to retain moisture. Make sure the plant has been standing in water for at least 2 hours to soak the compost. When planting put half a watering can of water in the base of the hole then backfill gradually, adding lots more water as I go. Firm the soil down and add another can of water on the top to settle the soil. Plants that do well in October include Cyclamen hederifolium. These autumn flowering cyclamen are hardy and like a light soil and a sunny dry spot around shrubs. They also do well in pots where the white marbled green foliage looks stunning all winter. Another

Janet Weeds Garden Mentor

bulb that does well in pots is the Nerine with it’s exotic pink flowers late in autumn. Again, they need well drained soil and a light dry soil by a wall would be ideal provided that they are not shaded by larger plants. Crab apples or Malus are in full fruit now with many keeping their tiny apples all winter. You get blossom in spring and coloured fruit in autumn on small trees. The variety Golden Hornet has bright yellow apples, Harry Baker has pink flowers and large red fruit which are good for Crab Apple jelly. John Downie has white flowers and two toned red/orange fruits also good for jelly. All are self fertile so they do not need another variety to pollinate the flowers, unlike some apples. Crab Apples are a good pollinator for apple trees so having one in the garden on a dwarfing rootstock (M9 or M26 for a small tree) is ideal.

This year my Star Jasmine or Trachelospermum jasminoides, has had flowers in summer and the glossy evergreen leaves have already started to turn red. Last winter it stayed red all winter, brightening up the garden. My Acers in pots have also turned to tints of orange, red and yellow. October is the time to finish harvesting tomatoes. Bring green ones indoors to ripen in the heat. Squashes and pumpkins should be ready to store too before any frost arrives. This year my runner beans will have finished early but sometimes they last into October. Pick them and cut the plants down to a stump. Leave them in the soil and they may well re-sprout next spring as mine did this year. Re seed any bare patches of grass after scarifying the soil, adding some compost, then sowing the seed and water in well.

Police pitch in to keep crime off the streets

Police have been on the ball in an effort to reduce anti-social behaviour over the school holidays. The unit has received lots of positive feedback on its youth engagement activity days, which have been held at community parks across the area. Held in conjunction with Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Youth Service and community safety wardens and free to attend for children of all ages, they boast an inflatable football pitch and Panna Soccer Cage as well as Xbox and PlayStation consoles. A large number of participants and parents have praised the activity days to the LPU and as well as giving youngsters something fun to do over the school holidays they have coincided with a marked decrease in anti-social behaviour in and around Ellesmere Port. Every Opportunity. Endless Possibilities. Every Opportunity

WHY WE NEED MATHS! There’s no escaping the fact that many employers value the GCSE maths qualification and you’ll often find job adverts that require a GCSE in maths and English. There’s lots in the maths syllabus that is very useful in everyday life not least when it comes to measurement and calculations. This is no more evident than when things go wrong – the University of Northumbria was recently fined £400,000 after a sports experiment nearly killed two of its students when a misplaced decimal point meant they gave the students 100 times more caffeine than intended! But it’s not so obvious how other parts of the syllabus might be useful - I often hear people ask why are we teaching our students about Pythagoras’ - when will they ever use it? I’m not going to try to persuade you that employers favour applicants with a maths GCSE because they believe it’s essential their workforce can calculate the length of the hypotenuse in a right-angled triangle. What these areas of the maths syllabus are developing, however, are problem solving skills. We live in a fast paced, technological age where new and exciting job opportunities arise constantly. As teachers, we need to develop the skills in our students so that they can rise to the challenges presented by this ever-changing job market. Maths, therefore, is important to everyone. It develops the necessary thinking skills such as problem solving and reasoning, which will better place students to succeed. This need for future employability is reflected in the GCSE 9-1 mathematics exam where there is a much greater emphasis on developing these skills. Problems solving skills are not something that can be practised as part of exam revision, they are skills that need to be developed over a period of time. During our group tuition sessions, often students work together on carefully selected maths activities which promote problem solving and reasoning skills. Apart from the fact that the students find them enjoyable and quickly build a rapport with one another, they are able to build on each other’s ideas to develop a deeper understanding of the topics taught. Maths-boost is a company run by Julie and Ed offering maths tuition. Julie was a maths lead in a school before becoming a head teacher. Ed is a qualified maths teacher and works as an examiner for a major exam board. You can find more about us at www.maths-boost.co.uk

School takes e-safety programme to Spain Pupils in St Mary of the Angels School, Little Sutton, recently travelled to the Basque country, Spain to take part in an international internet safety project. The pioneering scheme, funded by the EU Erasmus programme, matched up local pupils with Spanish children. The schools are working together on an international e-safety scheme. This will soon be shared with schools in both countries, to keep young people safe - wherever they are. Headteacher Rob Hughes said: “It was amazing to see Year 6 pupils from both schools learning Spanish and English together, and working with the Spanish police & teachers on how to stay safe on the internet. What a life changing opportunity for pupils in our town!” The project continues in October 2018, when the Spanish pupils visit Ellesmere Port, to stay with English families from St. Mary’s school. St Mary’s has been awarded the prestigious National E-Safety Mark, for its work on internet safety.
