It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services.

HANDBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB THIS month’s meeting is on Thursday , November 19th at 1.45pm in St. Mary’s Parish Hall, when we welcome National Demonstrator Craig Bullock from Burnley who has chosen the title “Winter” for this seasonal demonstration. What a load of rubbish!

MORE than 157 bags of litter plus 18 large items - including shopping trolleys, bikes, plastic chairs, a toilet cistern and a compositing bin - were collected during this year’s Big Dee Clean-Up in Cheshire West.

The annual clean-up, organised by Cheshire West and Chester Council, Flintshire Council and Natural Resources Wales, returned bigger and better than ever, for its ninth year.

And more than 2,000 bulbs were planted during the volunteer event which brought together residents and representatives from organisations and businesses.

The areas focused on were The Cop, The Meadows, Edgar’s Field, The Groves, Farndon riverside, the path alongside Chester Racecourse and footpaths alongside the River Dee in Saltney.

This year’s event was hosted by Flintshire County Council and a launch event took place at the Chocks Away Café at Airbus Saltney.

Trio of trophies for Lache surgery

STAFF at Lache Health Centre have been celebrating, after picking up an impressive collection of accolades at an awards evening hosted by the West Cheshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

The Hawthorn Road surgery, which has more than 6,000 patients, was awarded a trio of trophies for staff excellence, with Sister Dawn Ellis from Saltney crowned Nurse of the Year and Health Care Assistant Alison Vass, who lives in Lache, taking the Carers Link of the Year award.

Julia Bailey, who joined the team 15 years ago, received the prestigious ‘Practice Manager of the Year’ title. Julia, who lives in Rossett was nominated for the award by her fellow practice managers throughout West Cheshire.

“The commitment and compassion of our staff is astounding,” said Doctor Kevin Guinan, Partner at Lache Health Centre. ”Their job roles are constantly evolving and expanding and we are so proud that their phenomenal dedication has been officially recognised.”

QUEEN’S PARK HIGH TheSCHOOL Diamond Jubilee Scullers go the distance After an early foggy start, the mist cleared to a warm summer’s day, which saw all Queen’s Park High School Rowing Club athletes competing over the 5km and 2750km courses at the long distance sculls at Chester on the River Dee. The year 9 girls double with Kiera Burke and Zara Gautier-Price won gold in their category with their crew mates Louise Coleman and Charlotte Carswell coming second. These four girls along with Cox Felicity Weir also rowed in a quad boat in the afternoon finishing a well-deserved second out of a large group of eight competitors.

The year 11 double of Felicity Weir and Eve Lawlor were also winners in the Novice adult category.

The IM3 quad of Emily Cox, Eve Finlay, Rona Fishburn and Lucy Clegg rowed the 5k course finishing in second place; this was to be Lucy’s last race for QPHS as she went off to University straight after her race.

The poetry trials To celebrate National Poetry Day in October students from all year groups were invited to enter an exciting poetry competition. Arts leader at London expo Queen’s Park High School’s director of learning for the visual and performing arts has been invited to the London Olympia exhibition centre for the annual drama and music expo.

Queen’s Park has been recognised as a school of performing arts excellence and Mr Yeoman will be giving a presentation as a guest speaker to the delegates looking at how schools can develop ‘outstanding productions’, leading to increased engagement in learning. He will also be taking two students from this year’s production to showcase a musical number for the hundreds of teachers, musicians and actors at the show.

Bullying: see it, stop it and speak out

YEAR 8 students had the task of designing their own Anti-bullying Campaign as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. The focus of the day was on building healthy relationships, understanding different types of bullying; what it feels like to be a bully or to be bullied and why people bully.

To increase students’ awareness they looked at existing campaigns. Miss Watts Tutor Group decided to pull together to send out a clear message that bullying is not acceptable and used images of feet to re-enforce that it should be stamped out.

To support their campaign Hugo, Ellie, Kian & Ellen from Ms Allen’s Tutor Group came up with the slogan See It, Say It, Stop It, Stand Up, Speak Out.

As part of a mini topic about bears this half term the children have been reading the book ‘We are going on a Bear Hunt’.

The children went on a special adventure of their own. They walked barefoot through different obstacles.

They had to ‘listen’ with their feet and try to describe what it felt like to walk through shredded paper, pebbles, cotton wool, sawdust and rice krispies (a favourite). They enjoyed it so much they had another turn!

We have also read different versions of Goldilocks and the 3 Bears and will be concluding our topic with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

Taking the Brisket 1. With the cold, dark evenings now upon us, comfort food pushes its way to the front of the agenda. There are few cuts of meat more delicious and comforting than a brisket of beef, slowly cooked and with all the trimmings.

2. Fact: The name Brisket derives from the word “brusket” which comes from Old Norse Brjosk, meaning cartilage.

As cattle do not have collar bones this muscle supports about 60% of the body weight of the animal. This may explain the Nordic name.

3. Brisket of beef comes from the front end of the animal. It is probably easiest to imagine it as the chest of the animal. As this muscle does so much work it needs a significant amount of connective tissue and as a result needs long and slow cooking to make it tender.

Generally in meat, the more work a muscle does, the more flavour it has, resulting in briskets case as a taste sensation.

4. In addition to this it is great value and can be slowly roasted, casseroled or pot roasted. Brisket is certainly a great joint for all the family and ideal for entertaining and therefore should not be overlooked for dinner parties. Be the first of your friends to try this for a dinner party. It could be a talking point and a turning point!

BEEF BRISKET – SERVES 8 INGREDIENTS: 1.3kg/3Ib lean brisket joint Salt and pepper 2tbsp olive oil 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 x 400g can chopped tomatoes 100ml prepared barbecue sauce 2tbsp runny honey 4tbsp Worcestershire sauce 300m/ l/₂ pint beef stock 2tsp smoked paprika powder

METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 2 / 160oC 2. Heat half the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Place the joint on a chopping board and season with salt and pepper all over. Brown the joint on all sides and transfer to a large ovenproof dish.

3. Add the remaining oil and cook the onion and garlic for 2-3minutes until soft. Transfer to the casserole dish with the joint.

4. Add the tomatoes, barbecue sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, stock and paprika. Bring to the boil, cover and slow roast in the oven for 3-3 l/₂ hours until the beef is tender.

5. Transfer the beef to a clean chopping board and slice your brisket nice and thinly.

SERVE WITH CREAMY MASH AND VEGETABLES.

LAST BLAZE OF AUTUMN COLOUR LATE autumn and the remnants of flowers are still hanging on but mostly colour comes from tree leaf colour and berries.

If you have the right conditions for Acers, that is, well drained yet moisture retentive soil, sheltered position out of early morning sun and wind then they will put on a wonderful display of autumn colour. Acer palmatum Bloodgood has dark crimson foliage but a real star is the locally grown, Acer palmatum Eddisbury. This has bronzy new leaves opening to green then colouring well in autumn.

Berries on Sorbus, the Mountain Ash may still be around especially on varieties like Sorbus Joseph Rock with yellow berries. This compact tree is again good for smaller gardens and grows in an upright manner. The red berries seem to be eaten by birds first but orange, yellow and cream berries are left well into winter.

Cotoneasters are also berrying well this year.

Cotoneaster horizontalis with herring bone shaped branches will seed itself into corners but grown against a wall it will be covered in berries into early winter and has tiny white flowers in

early spring which are a magnet for bees. Plant the Euonymus Emerald n Gold around the Cotoneaster to give you bright yellow foliage to offset the scarlet berries.

Another must have plant is the Kaffir Lily or Schitzostylis coccinea because it will flower from November into December. This has grassy leaves, will grow to about 50cm tall and has exotic pink or red flowers on long stems. It likes a moisture retentive soil, in sun and is a member of the iris family.

I cut down any dying foliage that does not look good when frosted but I tend to leave plants like Sedums in place because their flower heads look lovely dusted with frost. Slightly tender plants can have foliage left in place to protect them from cold temperatures then can be cut back in spring.

Plant your tulips now for colour next year. Some tulips will come back year on year especially if the soil is well drained in summer. Tulips do not like wet, heavy clay soils. I find that they do well in pots with pansies and primulas planted above the bulbs to give colour in autumn.
