Magnificent at maths Woodfall Primary School’s Year 6 Maths team travelled to Ellesmere Port Civic Hall to compete in the final of the inter-primary school maths competition organised

by Liverpool University. After a convincing performance in their heat a few weeks earlier, the pressure was on to put in an equally good performance. The team, Rebecca, Esme, Adam and James, cheered on by their classmates, remained calm under pressure and showed off their maths ability in rounds including logic, word problem solving and practical problems. The afternoon concluded with a nailbiting mental maths round where the team increased their lead to an exceptional 560 points, securing them victory.

Hit the trail for Parkgate history THE Mayor of Neston, Cllr Mike Shipman, and Lesley Irvin, deputy church warden, unveiled a commemorative plaque which tells the story of Parkgate’s well-loved ‘fishermen’s church’.

The ceremony was attended by members from St Thomas’s congregation and the Parkgate Society.

Ward councillor Martin Barker, town councillor David Carter and Cheshire West and Chester Council officers also attended. Following the unveiling ceremony everyone retired to the warmth of St Thomas’s for tea and coffee and the chance to have a look at the photograph exhibition mounted by the Parkgate Society.

For some time the Parkgate Society have been promoting a Parkgate Heritage Trail, to enhance the image of the village, and the St Thomas’ plaque is one of seven that have been commissioned by the Society in collaboration with Cheshire West 6 To advertise call 01244 350398

and Chester Council, and with the support of Neston Town Council, to commemorate the various aspects of Parkgate’s historic past.

The other premises to receive plaques at this stage are: Dover Cottage – for its connection with Emma, Lady Hamilton; Mostyn House – for its connection with Grenfell of Labrador; Balcony House – for its connection with the Georgian love for sea bathing; Seven Steps – for its connection with Parkgate’s shipping era; the Old Watch House – for its connection with smuggling during that period; and (jointly) Pengwern and Sawyer’s Cottage – for their connection with Parkgate’s sea-faring days, the latter also being one of Parkgate’s long lost pubs.

After losing the “top tier” of cadets to university and ‘retiring’ at the grand old age of 20, Neston Air Cadets have been shaking up the ranks, bringing new blood to the non-commissioned officers.

Congratulations go to the now Sgt Philip Powell, Cpl Jacob Cotton, Cpl Nathan Fields, Cpl Mollie German, Cpl Ewan Pakula, Cpl Cuan Sullivan and Cpl Ben Turnbull who have all been promoted.

Christopher earns his wing blues Neston Air Cadet Corporal Christopher Marsh gained a place on the Merseyside Wing Rugby squad who were runners-up in the InterWing Competition at RAF Cosford.

Parkgate play area’s funding success A POPULAR play area in Parkgate will be getting three extra pieces of play equipment, thanks to a successful joint bid for funding by Cheshire West and Chester and Neston Town Councils.

The Ropewalk Play Area is to receive £16,800 from the Bradley Park Community Fund through the Landfill Communities Fund. This amount has also been match funded by Neston Town Council the local Parkgate Ward member and the Council’s Kick Start Fund.

The play area currently caters for younger primary school children and the new equipment, which is likely to include junior swings, a climbing frame and an allinclusive roundabout for disabled users, will provide much needed facilities for the 7 to 11 years age group.

The money will also fund a new boundary fence for the neighbouring allotment, which will increase site security and enhance the boundary with the play area.

Local councillor Louise Gittins said: “I’m delighted that we were able to work closely with Neston Town Council to secure this funding. There is mounting evidence demonstrating the contribution play areas can make to our children’s mental and physical health and wellbeing. Cheshire West and Chester Council is currently developing a borough-wide Play Strategy and is committed to developing the play opportunities available for children across the borough.”

Town councillor David Carter added: “The successful funding bid is really good news and the new equipment will be welcomed by the local community. I am also pleased that we will also be involving teaching staff and children at Parkgate Primary School in discussions about the final equipment choices, volunteering and promoting the site in the school community.”

It is hoped that the new equipment will be in place for the summer.

Mother, Baby and Bowen Therapy During pregnancy Bowen Therapy has a very important role to play in the health care of women both during and after pregnancy.

Marathon test in Gemma’s year of pain GOOD luck to Gemma Macknay who is preparing to run her first marathon in May. Gemma, who lives in Hampton Close, Little Neston, is spending 2016 running in as many events as possible to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Gemma has already completed a 10K and a half marathon but she is really turning up the heat in May with the Liverpool Spring 10K, Dirty Weekend Rat Race, Chester Half Marathon, a 5k Run for the 96 and finally the Liverpool Marathon on 29th May. But that’s just the start for Gemma, who has all sorts of races lined up over the next few months, including the Great North Run and Chester Marathon.

Her aim is to raise £5,000 for the charity which helps provide nursing care for people with cancer.

Gemma said: “I am doing the challenge because my mum is a Macmillan Nurse and I have seen first hand how badly Cancer affects peoples lives, and how the nurses can provide needed comfort to suffering people. I have also gone through the process of family members dying and living through the disease and how Macmillan has helped them. I just want to do my part and help fund their research.”

Her intense training schedule involves running up to 50 miles a week, as well as cross training and yoga.

Gemma added: “To keep my training more interesting I am also setting myself weekly challenges which I am posting updates of on my Just Giving page. For example this week I am attempting to burn at least 3000 calories a day for 7 days recorded by my fitbit, so far I have achieved this and more every day.”

Neston Neighbourhood Plan Referendum Thursday 5th May All those registered to vote in the Neston Neighbourhood Plan area will be eligible to take part in the referendum, which will have a similar format to an election.

The referendum will ask you to vote “yes” or “no” to the following question: Do you want Cheshire West and Chester Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for the Neston Area to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?

If more than 50% of those voting say “yes”, the Neston Neighbourhood Plan can be formally ‘made’ and will become part of the statutory development plan for the Neston area and will be used alongside the Cheshire West and Chester Local Plan as a basis for making decisions on planning applications.

Youth theatre opportunity NESTON Young Writers’ premiered their first piece of writing, ‘Murder at the Reunion Hotel’.

It was performed by professional actors Samantha Giblin, Mike Lockley and Natasha Symms with a support cast from InterACT Youth Theatre. The new murder mystery style play was presented in the form of a radio drama, complete with background sound effects.

As a result of funding being extended, Neston Young Writers will continue for a second project. The new brief will be to create a piece of writing for the young actors in InterACT Youth Theatre, complete with guest appearances from our team of professional actors. The group’s director, Mike Lockley, is in discussion with an online publisher who encourages young people to write and guarantees publication of the writing with book sales being hosted online.

The cost will be £1 per session as it will be funded by Neston Town Council and Antique Clock Care the Arts Council. and the project is for 13-19 year olds. Air cadets help young George

OVER the years, cadets from 2375 (Neston) Squadron, Air Cadets, have raised thousands of pounds for different charities.

This year was no different, except it was for four-year-old Wirral boy George Johnson, who has suffered from an undiagnosed condition that affects his digestive system since birth. George struggles to eat or drink, instead he is fed through a tube through his heart. So far, this little boy has endured 75 operations, and his parents are desperate for answers and a cure.

His family and friends are raising funds to take him to Ohio, America, in the hopes that consultants over there can help him and give him a diagnosis.

Cadets gained sponsorships, and raised money by their attendance at the annual Santa Dash in December 2015, marching through the streets of Liverpool. One cadet, Corporal Nathan Fields, raised a staggering ÂŁ301.20. For his achievement, the Commanding Officer of 2375 (Neston) Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Paul Thelwell handed over a gift voucher for ÂŁ20 to spend at the local Army & Navy store in Heswall.

Christian Aid Week

Christian Aid week this year starts with a service at St Nicholas’ Church, Burton on Sunday 15th May at 6.30pm. During the week volunteers from local churches will be delivering red envelopes, and calling back for donations to help the poorest people in the world.

The picture shows some of the sponsored walkers setting off on 12th March to raise money for Christian Aid. A total of people, and several dogs (also sponsored!) walked from Neston United Reformed Church along the Wirral Way to Gayton, and back along the shore.

Treasurer Eileen Ward said: “We haven’t got all the sponsorship money yet, but already we have over £1600, all of which will go to help people in real need.

Friday 13th May The NE Singers annual concert: ‘Hallelujah for Spring’ at 7.30pm in St Mary & St Helen Parish Church. Tickets £7 from NES members or pay at the door. Under 14’s free when accompanied by an adult.

Saturday 21st May Neston Flicks – a screening of Brooklyn at Neston Civic Hall, at 7pm. The film tells the story of an Irish immigrant in 1950s Brooklyn, where she quickly falls into a romance with a local.

When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. Tickets from Temptation card shop on Neston High Street or Neston Library, or online at www.nestoncangroup.co.uk.

Monday 16th May Parkgate Society AGM and talk entitled Liverpool’s Williamson tunnels by Claire Moorhead, 7.30pm, in the Cranston Suite, Neston Cricket Club. All welcome.

Thursday 2nd June Neston Ladies’ Day, from 1.30pm in the Market Square.

The parade sets off at 2.30pm, along Ladies Walk, Liverpool Road and then down the High Street in a change to the previous route.

Saturday 11th June The annual Burton Village Fete takes place again this year at 1pm in the grounds of Gladstone Village Hall, Burton. The fete coincides with celebrations to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
