New flats aimed at first time buyers New flats on the site of a former pub have been unveiled.

They have been built on the old Heswall Bar and Courtyard, which was formerly known as the Sandon Arms and The Slak, on Milner Road, which was closed in 2014 and demolished two years ago.

MBE Construction and housing association Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH) have combined to develop the former pub to become Sandon Gardens with 29 units.

It is made up of two and three-bedroom homes, offering ‘affordable, luxury living’.

Some of the apartments are available now for shared ownership.

LMH Chief Executive Steve Coffey said: “We are immensely proud of this development and to bring affordable luxury living within reach for local families. Sandon Gardens is one of several LMH schemes being developed across the Liverpool City Region to meet demand for high-quality affordable housing.”

Alison McGovern MP for Wirral South and Cllr George Davies, deputy leader of Wirral council, officially opened the scheme.

Bowled over by Probus Club

Heswall Probus celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The club is proud of its success over half a century, not least with the bowls section.

Throughout these years the club has played mainly at the Council Green on Poll Hill on Tuesday and Thursday at 2pm for 2-3 hours. They have regular matches against other local clubs and an annual tournament. Probus hope to stage two open days this year, depending on the weather, with a view to attracting some new players.

Health screening charity set up in memory of tragic Tim The father of a man who died suddenly in the middle of Heswall has joined sports starts to talk about a new charity in his name.

Tim Cogley suffered a fatal heart attack on Rocky Lane, Heswall, in April 2017, despite the 34-year-old appearing to be in good health. It since transpired that Tim had a genetic condition which could His father Frank set up the ‘Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation’ to encourage young people to be screened.

He met with the likes of jockey Tony McCoy and boxer Paul Smith at an event in Liverpool to discuss health screening.

Frank spoke to the Wirral Globe to explain that the lack of routine screening for people under 40 has left a ‘gaping chasm in healthcare provision’.

He told the newspaper: “The Tim Cogley Cardiac Screening Foundation is committed to delivering positive, action-focused and life-changing programmes. I can’t imagine a legacy more in tune with the generous, kind and supportive person that was Tim.”

THE BIG DAY Pull yourself together, Old Bean, and stop worrying. Worrying is for sheep, especially if they see a dog carrying a jar of mint sauce. All will be perfectly sound. It will be alright on the night, that`s what they say, or at least some Stinker on the old Gogglebox blabbers on about. It probably will be ticketyboo tonight, but, by jove, it`s the in-between I am worrying about. Is it too late to call it orf?

My nuptials are rapidly approaching. Am I doing the right thing? Am I ready for Holy padlock?

No more booze-ups with the chums. Well might get the odd Friday night, as long as I bring a takeaway curry back with me. Marriage is not for everyone. I remember old Rodders. Things did not work out for him. He ran away to the Foreign Legion to forget his wife. Unfortunately the sergeant major looked like her.

Does anybody really enjoy their bally wedding day? What if the betrothed does not turn up? She will. She loves me. I know she is “Miss Right”, just hope her first name doesn`t turn out to be “Always.” I think the only thing I would break up over, is if she caught me with another woman. I won`t stand for that.

Dash it, will this hand ever stop shaking so I can have a decent shave, and make oneself even more beautiful, if that`s at all possible? Stand closer to the beastly razor, Old Bean. Egad, it bit me! GARDENING BY JANET HEATH

Spring is here

After a long cold winter we can welcome a variety of trees, shrubs and perennials that flower in May.

Laburnum x watereri is a smallish tree (4 to 8 metres tall) with long racemes of bright yellow flowers in late spring. Note that all parts of the tree are poisonous including the seeds so not one to plant where small children or animals are around. However the flowers are stunning and if you had time to train over an arch you could have a mini Laburnum tunnel similar to the famous one at Bodnant gardens.

Clematis Montana is a climber, very vigorous and can drape itself over 4 fence panels! It is covered in pink or white flowers which are slightly scented and will flower in sun or shade. Best in a moisture retentive soil and if it gets too large, take the shears to it immediately after flowering.

Shrubs flowering in May include Spirea Goldflame or Golden Princess. These low growing mounded shrubs are good in sun or partial shade and any soil. The new foliage has orange or yellow leaves in early spring and bright pink flowers in summer.

Perennials include the large flowered Paeonies in flower in May. They take time to clump up but look stunning. Will grow in sun or part shade and best in moisture retentive soils. Put plant supports around the foliage to keep it from falling over. On a smaller scale, the Silene vulgaris or Bladder Campion is perfect for the edge of a rockery or raised bed in sun. You can see it flowering on cliff paths in this country but it can do well in gardens too.

Jobs to be doing in the garden in May include doing the Chelsea Chop! Perennials that flower later in the season such as Heleniums or Astrantias can be cut back to delay flowering. If you have 2 plants cut one back and leave the other to extend the season.

Put straw around Strawberries to protect the fruit. Keep your potatoes earthed up to improve yields and continue to plant succession of salad seeds like lettuce and radishes for a continuous supply.

If you would like to visit gardens look out for gardens open under the National Gardens Scheme where all proceeds go to charities including Marie Cure Cancer Care and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Framley in Neston is open on 7th May with lovely mature woodland underplanted for spring, paths around the 5 acre garden will take you to a sunken garden and an intriguing pond in the woodland.

Tirley Garth near Tarporley is open on the afternoon of 13th and 20th May. This Arts and Crafts garden has 20 acres to explore, including thousands of Rhododendrons and Azaleas out in May.

Hayley’s health and fitness

I just can't get MOTIVATED! We all know that first session in gym, that first fitness class or that first run especially after a long time being away is always the hardest!

So, what can you do to ensure you stop making excuses and start making those positive changes.

My first bit of advice would be to set a realistic goal! No use saying I’ll run a marathon in 2 months when you haven’t moved for years, nor is setting a target of 3 stone weight loss when your cupboard is full of cakes and biscuits. Start off with baby steps, so for example, you might start with ‘this week my target is to cut out crisps and cakes’ once this target is achieved add on another small goal. ‘ This week Ill increase my water intake etc’ With weight loss it’s so important that you do BOTH exercise and diet together. You will get smaller just dieting but when you’re left with saggy skin and you’re still out of breath getting up the stairs what’s the point!

Exercise has a huge impact to all aspects in day to day life, whether it’s your mental state, reducing your risk of high blood pressure, improving your flexibility the list is endless!

So, there is no time like the present to start.

Exercise classes on your own can be daunting but find something you’ll enjoy and use this as a tool to meet new people, get stuck in and give it your all. In group exercise using others as a tool to ensure you keep going, if group exercise isn’t for you try doing your own workouts at home or getting a personal trainer.

Dieting is the part of getting fit most find the hardest, sticking to healthy foods especially at the weekends can be tricky! I believe it’s not about cutting everything out just to have everything in moderation. Carbohydrates

are always labelled as the baddie of the food groups yet eaten properly can be a good tool. It’s the refined carbs that you have to watch, cakes, crisps, sugary snacks are the bad foods. Eating the healthy carbs such as vegetables, fruits and whole grain cereals etc are a perfect way of getting nutrients in and getting a balanced diet.

Avoid diets that are all protein, or all liquids they can have adverse effects on your body.

A diet however high in protein is what I advise all my clients to eat. A typical day would be eggs and 1 small slice of granary bread for breakfast, handful of almonds for a snack, dinner chicken salad, followed by a Greek yoghurt, afternoon snack a small piece of fruit, evening meal pork/ chicken stir fry.

Get yourself a food and exercise diary note all the activity you do throughout the day and use this as a guide of where you can improve. Write down your monthly targets and keep track of good and bad days. Seeing what you actually consume is a great way of monitoring your calorie intake.

Discover the secret gardens of Oxton Make a date for Sunday 13th May for the Secret Gardens of Oxton event. It showcases over 25 private gardens not normally open to the public. Courtyards, rockeries, walled gardens, ponds and colourful borders attracted nearly 4,000 visitors in 2017.

Since 2001 this community event, run by over 400 volunteers, has raised over £300,000 for local charities. This year the charities are: Birkenhead Woodcraft Folk, Sundowns, The Vikes Youth Club and The Oxton Society.

THE DARLING BUDS OF MAY ‘Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May…’ – William Shakespeare Growing up I lived close to Stratford upon Avon and spent many an hour walking along the Avon, eating ice cream, looking at all the wonderfully decorated canal boats and not even giving the Bard a second thought! Last year I saw a production of The Merry Wives of Windsor at the Playhouse Theatre by the Northern Broadsides Company whose ethos is to put on plays using the “northern voice”. I certainly think that Shakespeare’s work need to be experienced in play format , the language he uses comes alive when spoken, even to our modern ears. I hope that after the wicked winter we have had, Shakespeare got it wrong and the rough winds do not materialise!

BEN BROOKS – STORIES FOR BOYS WHO DARE TO BE DIFFERENT This is a welcome edition in this series and I feel that this and Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls should be read by girls and boys showing that people can be amazing regardless of gender. The stories while not in depth give a really great outline of inspiring men and does not shy away from some of the more tragic endings.

EMMA HEALEY – WHISTLE IN THE DARK I adored Emma Healey’s debut novel Elizabeth is Missing a gripping mystery and a moving portrayal of dementia. Her second book delivers too. Also a mystery, Lana is 15 and goes missing while on holiday with her mother she turns up 4 days later refusing to tell anyone what has happened to her.

Her mother obviously is anxious to discover the truth but the more she digs for answers the more secretive Lana becomes. An intricate exploration of the fraught relationship between a mother and daughter.

ANTONY BEEVOR – ARNHEM Renowned historian Beevor never fails to deliver he always strikes a balance between hard historical facts and the human stories behinds the events he writes about.

Operation Market Garden was supposed to bring about the end of WWII but this dramatic battle to destroy the bridges along the Lower Rhine was an horrendous failure, causing heartless reprisals against the Dutch who risked everything to help.
