Awesome foursome take to the streets of London Farida Brooker, Bev Faulkner, Louise Russell and Ali Thompson are in training the London Marathon in aid of the charity Wellchild.

Farida and Bev did the 26.2mile course last year but this time they’re joined by their two friends Louise and Ali. As well as pounding the streets to get fit for the April event, the runners have been busy raising sponsorship and holding fundraisers, such as a cocktail night, cookery class, fashion evening and their own half marathon. A Rock ‘n’ Roll Bingo, cake sale and a tea party are still to come.

The quartet have a target of £6k to raise between them, but want to exceed that if possible.

Farida said: “Wellchild are an amazing charity who get children out of hospital

Wellchild also organise bedroom and garden makeovers to make the lives of the children as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.”

Terracotta Warriors author in town Linghams book shop, on Telegraph Road, was overflowing with visitors to see author Edward Burman, who had flown in from Beijing. The British scholar has published a book ‘Terracotta Warriors: History, Mystery and the Latest Discoveries’, an ancient wonder in Northwest China’s Shaanxi province, which tells the history of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) and seeks to examine one of China’s most famous archaeological discoveries in light of recent excavations, new theories and discoveries.

Big tidy at Hillhouse Park The Friends of Hillhouse Park and Garden are taking part in the ‘big tidy’ on Sunday 4th March. The area between Heswall Library and the Jug & Bottle has had a makeover and the park is now a haven for a wildlife and a much more attractive asset to Heswall. The work, however, is not over and in order to continue to maintain the park, a friends group has been formed. Take unwanted items to charity shop rather than throwing them away A Wirral hospice is calling for the support of people in Heswall as it looks to generate much needed funds as well as prevent everyday household materials from going to waste.

People are encouraged to bring in their unwanted items - such as furniture, clothing, toys, books, electricals and more - to the Wirral Hospice St John’s shop on Telegraph Road where the items will be cleaned up and sold on, with the sales money going to support its vital operations.

The charity provides free care and support to adults with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, heart, liver and kidney disease, respiratory and neurological conditions.

The project – Supporting Patient Care Through Recycling and Re-use - is part of the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority (MRWA) and Veolia Community Fund 2017/18 which was set up to help support waste prevention, re-use and recycling projects locally.

The Hospice has received £5,000 from the fund to help expand their operations, which they hope will increase donations from members of the public, with the extra revenue generated helping run the hospice’s services.

Teresa Nightingale, Head of Fundraising at Wirral Hospice, said: “The project is aiming to encourage more Wirral residents to help us re-use and recycle their unwanted and preloved items and generate income for local hospice care.

“We want them to donate more goods, items and materials and volunteer their time. We’ve got six shops throughout the Wirral, and we even run a van pick-up service for large and bulky items. “We’re not a national charity, we’re local – any money raised by our activities goes back to the local community.”

Wirral Hospice hopes that the project will help to generate an additional revenue of £20,000 which will go directly towards their annual fundraising target to enable them to care for patients and provide support to their families and loved ones.

The Hospice runs six charity shops in Wirral, including an outlet in Heswall at 254 Telegraph Road. March highlights

By March, spring will be here, the bulbs will be out, some trees and shrubs will be growing and we will hope that there isn’t a cold snap to damage new growth.

Pale yellow Primroses and Primulas in multi-colours will continue to flower in sheltered spots, along with some blue violets. I expect that blue Forget me Not will be starting to come out too and en-masse they make such a cheerful show.

No need to sow seed, just let the plants set seed, shake them around and next year you will get a wonderful show.

Another perennial that is good for early spring, will grow in dry light shade and has evergreen foliage, is the Epimedium x versicolour Sulphureum. With heart shaped leaves that turn bronze in winter it will bring forth stems with pale yellow flowers in spring. You can cut off the leaves to see the flowers as they form or leave the leaves on and hope the sprays pop up above the leaves.

Continuing the yellow theme, the vibrant yellow flowers of Forsythia will be everywhere on the streets. These easy shrubs will form large twiggy plants with yellow flowers clustered on the leafless stems. You can grow as a hedge covered in yellow blooms before the leaves come out. Cut back just after flowering, to keep them within bounds.

Another March flowering shrub is the evergreen Mahonia aquifolium Apollo. This is an unassuming low growing evergreen shrub (to 1m) often grown in shade to cover the ground and usually looking a bit tired as it is ignored.

However, try feeding it in spring and you should be rewarded with clusters of yellow flowers. The photo is of a swathe of these shrubs grown as ground cover under taller trees and the scent from the flowers was quite superb.

Work to do in the garden includes cutting back dead foliage from perennials, trimming the winter flowering heathers to encourage fresh new growth for next year and completing the pruning of roses. If you grow Cornus or Dogwood for the red or yellow stems, cut them back hard every two or three years to about 30cms tall and give them a good feed of general purpose fertilizer such as Growmore.

Feed all trees, shrubs especially roses and perennials with Growmore or a specific Rose Fertilizer to give the plants a good start to the year. Weigh out the recommended dose as I find I don’t apply enough!

Wirral care home residents help YMCA with clothing parcels during cold weather RESIDENTS from a Wirral care home are supporting a local youth charity with much-needed clothing parcels this winter.

The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Heswall, has made a commitment to work with the YMCA in Birkenhead and donated new hats, scarfs, gloves and other items to help people, without a home or shelter, deal with the freezing cold temperatures.

Residents collectively decided they wanted to buy the clothing items from money raised for charity at a summer fete at the care home in Oldfield Road last summer.

YMCA, a Christian charity founded by philanthropist Sir George Williams in 1844, the oldest and largest youth charity in the world. Its mission is to allow young people to belong, contribute and thrive in their local communities.

Chief executive of the YMCA, Nigel Hughes, visited residents at The Hazelwell and provided a fascinating insight into the background

on the work carried out by the organisation.

He said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be invited to The Hazelwell and speak about the work the YMCA does on the Wirral. It’s a fabulous care home and the staff and residents were wonderful and gave me a very warm welcome.

“For them to take the YMCA under their wing and be so kind and supportive with donations made to people who are extremely disadvantages and underprivileged is extremely humbling.

“It is gratifying that people at the The Hazelwell would see the work we do at the YMCA and help by suppling winter clothes for people

MARCH – beating the winter blues March has always been a special month in my calendar it marks the beginning of Spring, the promise of better weather and especially for me the banishment of the winter blues.

A new book always makes me happy and this Spring sees the release of Penguin Moderns, 50 gorgeous little duck-egg blue books that give you a taster of writers well-known and lesser known authors are show-cased just perfect for slipping into your pocket, believe me they are fabulous!

The books I am reading for March are Midwinter Break - Bernard McLaverty and Mothering Sunday - Graham Swift.

Lots of events are planned at Linghams this month and April: 5th March, TARA WESTOVER, 13th March LUCA VESTE and DAVID JACKSON 15th March BISHOP DAVID WILBOURNE, 21st KAREN HAMILTON, 26th March Pizza and Prosecco with debut authors David Whitehouse and Rhidian Brook.

It’s World Book Day on Thursday 1st March and as always there are 10 special edition books released they cost a £1 each or are free with The WBD token that your children should get from school. There are also 5 Young Adult titles that cost £2.50

Thousands of miles of fences and barriers have been erected in the past ten years, and they are redefining the political landscape of the world we live in.

Ayobami Adebayo – Stay With Me This was on the short list for the Bailey Prize last year. It is a tale of an young Nigerian woman’s endeavours to bear a child for her husband of 4 years.

There is pressure from his family to take a second wife to fulfil the expectations of Nigerian society.

This is not only about the sadness that comes with the stigma of infertility but it is also about the falling apart of modern Nigeria during the 80s and 90s. Great book.

David will tell the story of how beautiful arctic-alpine wild flowers have survived in Snowdonia since the end of the last ice age. Their conservation and management will be discussed with particular respect to Cwm Idwal, where the speaker has carried out long-term research (which started 40 years ago at Ness Gardens!).
