BY the time you read this, the Heswall Christmas lights should be up. This year, there won’t be an ice rink, which had rather mixed reviews, instead it’s a traditional switch-on with a Christingle service and a visit by Santa.

Lights go on in Heswall Plans are proceeding for the Christmas lights switch on, on Thursday 30th November.

There will be a Christingle service in Church of the Good Shepherd from 4pm.

From 5pm it is hoped that Father Christmas will make an appearance and there will be live music from local choir and hopefully a local band.

ANGUS CLARK 1941-2017

AN APPRECIATION Angus Clark, who sadly died very recently, was well known and respected by regular users of Heswall Hall following his crucial early involvement in saving the hall for the benefit of the community, writes John Lack, from Heswall Hall Community Trust.

In 2009 Heswall Hall was threatened with closure. A Steering Group was formed to save it and ensure its transfer to the community.

Angus was involved from the outset. He prepared the Business Plan and conducted complex negotiations with Wirral Council. When Heswall Hall Community Trust was formed, Angus became a Trustee and the Hall was transferred to the community in September 2011.

His excellent communication and organisational skills ensured that the users of the hall fully participat-ed in the many changes required and that the transfer to community ownership went smoothly.

He remained a Trustee until April 2016 thus enabling the Trust to make full use of the skills and experience acquired during his business career. Angus’ straightforward, no nonsense approach endeared him to friends and colleagues alike.

His contribution was outstanding.

Finally, Angus was a kind, thoughtful person and a true gentleman who will be greatly missed by us all. Our thoughts are with his wife, Sally, and her two sons Jake and Mark.

IS BACK PAIN HOLDING ACCORDING to a recent report carried out by The British Pain Society there are ten million chronic pain sufferers in Britain alone which affect not only their social life but interferes with their working life.

Back pain costs the UK billions of pounds in health bills, loss of earnings and lost productivity. However many people in the UK who are unable to work due to back pain are not covered by this or by allowances.

Instead these sufferers are reliant on their partner or early retirement.

Following a recent survey British businesses lose an estimated 4.9 million days from employee absence due to work related back pain.

The North East suffers than most, with 2 people every hundred having to cope with the condition. As a result, each affected employee takes 19 days of work which in turn puts the business at stake.

GPs tend to refer patients to chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists and in some cases suggest surgery. In recent studies carried out by the NHS there has been a significant increase in teenagers suffering with back pain. This age group costs the NHS nearly £4billion per year alone working out at an average of

£8,000 per teenager. Despite this the number of back pain sufferers is still prominent with treatment showing no guarantee of success. Bowen Therapy is an alternative therapy which has slowly but surely been sweeping the nation over the last 20 years.

RELIEF The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free noninvasive complementary therapy which was invented in Australia and introduced to the UK in the 1990’s.

Bowen Therapy has a particularly strong record of success in the treatment of back pain.

A national study, carried out by The Bowen Therapy Professional Association (BTPA), showed that 95 per cent of back pain sufferers experienced either complete relief or a marked improvement, after a series of no more than three Bowen treatments.

It prides itself on being able to trigger the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the changes it requires.

With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual.

manipulation or force is needed or used. Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

Bowen is generally pleasant to receive, each session lasting 30 – 60 minutes, depending on the age of the client and the nature of their condition. Many clients become so relaxed they fall asleep during the treatment.

Short-term (acute) injury may be resolved in one to three Bowen treatments, while long-standing (chronic) conditions may require longer.

A gap of five to ten days is recommended between Bowen sessions; so that the body can process the subtle information it has been given.

Heswall care home pays tribute to fallen heroes Residents from a Heswall care home came together with members of the local community to mark Remembrance Day at its home last month.

The Hazelwell, a residential, nursing, palliative and respite care home in Oldfield Road, hosted the special event, which included a light lunch, in commemoration of Armistice Day. The day was open to friends, relatives and members of the general public from Heswall.

Ballroom dance duo Stephen Atkins and Samantha Hewitt from Havana Nights, who have appeared on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent, provided the after-lunch entertainment.

The Hazelwell opened last July at a cost of £5.5 million and is situated on the site of

the former Cleaver Hospital which serviced the local community for more than 30 years before its closure in 1983.

Founded in 1901, it acted as a children’s hospital between 1913 and 1930 until their forced evacuation to Wales due to the outbreak of the Second World War, at which point adults were then admitted.

The Home Guard - also known as local defence volunteers – a defence organisation of the British

“Many of our residents took part in the last world war and were keen to pay tribute to the servicemen and women who gave up their lives for our freedom.

“The Cleaver Hospital had a rich history in Heswall and even played a role in the Second World War when The Home Guard used it. It was also fantastic to see many members of the public from Heswall join us in commemorating Armistice Day.”

TIPS - A SHORT STORY BY JOHN D.

I

T was a Yuletide tradition that the four retired golfing pals would meet up every year on the 21st of December to play a round of golf, to be followed by a Christmas dinner, and quite a few little “snorters“.

Actually, they had only done it once before, but they all agreed that it was to become a tradition.

After all, traditions have to start somewhere, sometime. There was complete harmony in opinion that the date was set in stone no matter what the weather, and it was to be at the same Municipal course, which never seemed to close because of inclement conditions. It was close to the sea, which seemed to give it good draining qualities, although it did become windy at times, but these were hardy boys of the old school, and they never let poor weather bother them.

When they arrived at the course, they could not believe their luck for, apart from the seasonally low temperature, the wintry sun was shining brightly and doing its utmost to make the late morning give a fine impression of a spring like day. Many players were taking advantage of the bright weather, with the activity around the car park and clubhouse resembling the kind of atmosphere usually associated with the beginning of the golfing season.

To make the occasion a bit “out of the norm” and “to be jolly”, the four friends decided it was a requisite of the occasion to wear something in line with the Christmas spirit. It was “just for a bit of fun”, and as everybody knows golfers are still children at heart. They certainly don’t know how to do maths, and as somebody once said --“two thirds of them are cheats and the other half don’t know how to add up.”

Ron turned up wearing a large white Father Christmas beard, which everyone in unison thought made a vast improvement to his visage.

Jim and Peter adorned their bags and trolleys with various baubles and tree decorations. John wore a long bright red Santa hat, which had what looked like a Table Tennis ball on the end, which flickered on and off at the press of a button which activated the battery.

“I got this in a Charity shop, would you believe?” exclaimed John.

“I tell you what”, said Jim, “with money being a bit tight, those shops are doing a great service. I got myself rigged out in one, a few weeks ago. The jumper fits me fine, but the skirt is a bit tight.”

After the initial joviality, they soon got down to their usual game of serious golf. Ron took off his beard, but John said he would leave his Santa hat on but switch off the intermittent light.

They proceeded on their merry way, lapping up the sunshine, laughing and joking in the true Christmas spirit.

Although it was bright, it was bitterly cold, and there were signs the temperature was falling.

TIP NUMBER ONE

As John lent over the ball to address a putt, Peter interrupted the flow of play. “I will give you a little tip.”

“Oh, here we go!”

“Never let your nose drip on the ball before you putt--it could move it and cause a penalty stroke.” said Peter.

“Yeah, but at least you would know your head was in the right position,” replied John hastily.

They moved off in convoy to the next tee, and dear readers for the sake of expediency, I will no longer state who said what-----in a foursome, all golfers contribute along the way, especially when there is an air of jocularity and familiarisation amongst close friends. Sometimes the golf is secondary to the conversation.

TIP NUMBER TWO

“The funniest advice I ever heard about was the story of an old pro. when teaching a learner, the perfect stance for the drive. He told him to stand as if he was going to do a weewee, and to imagine that his urine was going to land six inches right of the ball.”

“I’ll bet he didn’t give many lessons to ladies.”

The weather was getting colder as they approached the ninth, with the sun beginning to fade.

They all agreed to carry on regardless, no matter how cold. Even though Scott of the Antarctic would have probably walked off.

By 2pm, it was like they were on another planet.

The beautiful wintry sun had “done a bunk”, probably gone to do its last-minute shopping, and the temperature had fallen dramatically, with a wet misty fog rolling in from the coast.

All sensible people had deserted, along with the sun, but not our hardy intrepid foursome. They belonged to the family of “retired golfers” who were determined to play 18 holes.

What else would they be doing? Stuck at home mitigating the tedium by writing nasty letters of complaint to some modern organisation, or hoovering, or walking the dog, or pretending to like gardening, or filling in the hours by strolling a mile to pick up a newspaper, which they read from cover to cover. They were at an age where they had one foot in the grave and the other in a bunker.

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

Visibility soon dropped to about 150 yards, so they decided that if they stopped using their drivers, and just hit smooth and steady three woods or Utility clubs, the ball will only travel a distance where they could see it.

The weather was becoming very gloomy, foggy, and damp in sharp contrast to the morning, but they kept their Christmas spirit up with a determination to finish the round. John stated he was going to switch on the light on the end of his Santa hat “just in case you need to find me in the rough.”

TIP NUMBER THREE

“The best advice I ever received was from an old guy at the club. He said the best way of knocking 8 shots off your score is to miss a hole out.”

“I think we have had enough tips for today, let’s just get on and finish. I cannot wait to get in the warmth and have my Chrimbo dinner.”

Being regular winter golfers, they were well equipped against the elements, with all manner of attire produced to fight the weather. ---mittens, hand warmers, ear muffs, scarves--they did not care for fashion or what they looked like. With only four holes to play, they sensed there was nobody else on the course, which now had a very eerie feel about it.

John remarked that he had seen a lone shadowy figure behind them, which kept appearing and then vanishing.

The others started to deride him, and said he was seeing things. -----The banter went on, but John was convinced someone was following them, but in the fog, it looked like an apparition.

“Surely if someone was playing on their own, he would soon catch us up and we would let him play through?”

“Nobody would be out on their own in these conditions, it’s far too scary. I feel like we are in a Steven King horror movie, and Jack Nicholson will jump out from behind and tree any minute and say “Boo”.

The final two holes were played out in virtual silence, as the four of them couldn’t wait to get the game over with--they even seemed to lose their sense of humour.

They walked to the side of the 18th and started checking their cards, putting away their tees, etc, when suddenly the “ghost” appeared coming up the final fairway. He looked a jolly happy chap, playing on his own, and thoroughly enjoying every minute, by his demeanour.

“Hi guys, terrible weather, but so what, I really enjoyed that. It`s good to be out.”

BOOKS with LINGHAM’S BOOKSTORE, HESWALL

HO HO HO – IT’S NEARLY CHRISTMAS I can get excited about Christmas now it is December! One of my most reflective Christmas Days was spent in a small town in Chile.

Christmas is sunny (odd but nice!), I had found a little tree from somewhere, handmade all the decorations and lit candles on the tree (I know) but the Health and Safety Executive jurisdiction did not stretch that far! The person I shared the house with was working away but left me a little gift under the tree for me to open.

I opened my present and it was a little tea diffuser in the shape of a tea pot. It made me laugh, smile and cry all at the same time. I still have it though I am not sure I should admit this, but I loathe tea! I had been in Chile a couple of years and I was getting a little homesick!

It was then I decided to return home in the New Year and go to University. In a “circle of life” kind of way, by the time you read this our son will be home for Christmas after completing his first term at University and while we have missed him I am sure after a couple of days we will realise that we really are enjoying this new stage of our life!

CHRISTMAS REVIEWS Every year we are stacked to the rafters with books glorious books and it is doubly hard to choose which ones to review. This month I am reviewing my personal Christmas favourites. I am sure we all have favourite books we love to read during the festive season!

MICHAEL ROSEN – WE’RE GOING ON A BEAR HUNT This is just one of the best children’s book, it is great to hunker down under the blankets and read it out loud.

This is a special edition which includes a snow globe on the front cover filled with snow!

DYLAN THOMAS – A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS IN WALES This lovely book has become bit of a Linghams Christmas tradition. The gorgeous illustrations are by (local-ish) Peter Bailey who has visited us again to sign our copies. Make this book part of your Christmas traditions!

DR SEUSS – THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHRISTMAS For me it’s not Christmas until I have read this book I LOVE IT! This is so special that although I have at least 5 different editions I now have six!
