HONORARY DOCTORATE DEGREE
Dr. O.H. “Bud” Frazier
As a native of Stephenville and a former Tarleton State student, Dr. O.H. “Bud” Frazier has made the community proud by becoming one of the world’s top transplant and mechanical circulatory support surgeons.
Throughout the course of a remarkable career, Dr. Frazier has performed over 1,200 heart transplants. Additionally, since conducting experimental work toward developing an implantable left ventricular assist device in the 1970s and 80s, he has implanted more than 900 LVADs, the most of any surgeon in the world.
Overall, his work in the field of circulatory support has resulted in more than 100,000 LVADs being implanted in patients worldwide as a life-saving effort. A significant number of these devices have been developed in Dr. Frazier’s Texas Heart Institute laboratory.
He was recently named recipient of the prestigious Pushpa and Kewal Krishan Gupta Lifetime Achievement Award in Development of Therapies for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Diseases by the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO) Board of Trustees.
In addition to the recognition from the ASAIO, he has received Lifetime Achievement awards from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery.
In 2011, Dr. Frazier implanted the first successful continuous-flow total artificial heart using two second generation HeartMate II LVADs to replace a patient’s failing heart. Last year, his team successfully implanted the first-in-human BiVACOR total artificial heart that is designed to serve as a bridge to transplant for patients with end-stage heart failure.
Growing up, he was a standout athlete with impressive talent. Notably, Mineral Wells High School recruited his mom, Adele Frazier, to teach English so that her son could play running back for the football team.
His father, Oscar H. Frazier Sr., was a math teacher and track coach at Tarleton State — named John Tarleton Agricultural College and then Tarleton State College at the time — for 40 years. The Oscar H. Frazier Memorial Track on campus is named in his honor.
Bud’s collegiate journey started at Tarleton State before going on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas. At Texas, he was a kicker and punter on the football team while also participating in track. He earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine.
From 1968 to 1970, he served his country as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Army. As a result of his bravery and exceptional service, he received the Combat Flight Medal, the Vietnamese Navy Medal and the Vietnamese Distinguished Service Medal.
Last June, the City of Stephenville presented him with a proclamation and a key to the city to celebrate his contributions to the field of mechanical circulatory support and his efforts in pioneering treatments for patients suffering from heart failure.
Bud and his wife, Rachel, are the proud parents of a son, Todd, and daughter, Allison.

UNIVERSITY MACE EL CETRO UNIVERSITARIO
The mace is a ceremonial staff traditionally displayed as a symbol of authority. Historically, the use of a mace dates back to the Middle Ages and was carried before or placed near a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. The University Mace is borne by the Provost at the beginning of each commencement ceremony. Tarleton unveiled a new mace on the inauguration day of its 15th president. The University Mace is turned out of walnut and has a headpiece with cast bronze Tarleton seals mounted on four sides. Crowning the headpiece is a three-dimensional, bronze-plated flame of knowledge, which sits above three polished bands of bronze, representing Tarleton’s past, present and future.

ACADEMIC DRESS
The distinctive dress associated with academic processions and convocations dates from the Middle Ages when students of the oldest European and English universities wore woolen and fur garments for warmth in drafty stone buildings. Most of the scholars were clerics in holy orders, and they wore cloaks with hoods that could be pulled up to cover their tonsured heads. Robes were adopted from both ecclesiastical and civilian sources. The hood was selected by these early scholars as an article of apparel to distinguish the various university degrees by its color, trimming or binding.
The use of academic dress in the United States has been continuous since Colonial days. However, a uniform system was adopted by most institutions of higher learning near the end of the 19th century when the Intercollegiate Commission met in New York. This code of dress has become standard for most colleges and universities.
In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions authorize holders of their doctorates to wear the colors of the institution. The bachelor’s robe is black with long pointed sleeves. The master’s is black with oblong sleeves which are closed; the arm comes through a slit in the sleeve. The doctor’s robe has long full sleeves, velvet facing on the front and at the neck, and three velvet bars across each of the sleeves. The velvet in the doctor’s robe may be black, or it may be the color that symbolizes the degree held.
The usual cap, proper for all degrees, is the black mortarboard, although some colleges use the beret. Tassels, usually black, are worn over the left front quarter of the cap. Holders of the doctorate may wear tassels of gold thread.
The most distinctive feature of American academic dress is the hood, which indicates by its color and design its wearer’s degree and the institution by which the degree was conferred. Hoods vary in length according to the degree. The bachelor’s hood (which is used at some institutions) is about three feet long, and that of the master’s degree is slightly longer, while the doctoral hood is long and colorful with broad panels. The hood is lined with the color of the college or university granting the degree. It is faced with a color indicating the subject of specialization. A partial list of colors associated with the various disciplines is as follows:

Classes are available at the home campus in Stephenville — an hour southwest of Fort Worth — and in Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan, and online. Tarleton State’s move to NCAA Division I, the completion of a second building on the Fort Worth campus, and an $80 million Health Professions Building in Stephenville are some of the ways that the institution is establishing itself as the premier comprehensive public university in enrollment, research, and national prominence in the nation.
Additionally, the new state-of-the-art Research and Economic Development Building will strengthen faculty-led student research and spur regional growth and job creation.
