Our mission is to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart, lung & blood diseases through independent research, collaboration and education.

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Dear Friends, The year 2015 has witnessed stunning progress in mesothelioma research across the country, and I’d like to share with you the progress that our research program at the Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) in West Los Angeles, California has made this year. The Institute, which focuses on orphan diseases of the heart, lung and blood that receive little attention and funding, is currently developing stem cell-based treatments for malignant pleural mesothelioma, thymoma, and other chest cancer diseases. Today mesenchymal stem cell treatment is one of the most impressive immunotherapies for possibly eradicating cancer, and is being utilized in experimental treatments of inflammatory disorders and for regenerative medicine in humans. Our research program at the PMC is modeling its research on mesothelioma, for example, using recent clinical breakthroughs in using combination immunotherapies. Mesenchymal stem cells are harvested from donated bone marrow, term placentas, umbilical cord blood, and fat tissue and then converted into viable biologic drugs. This year two of our own researchers, Dr. Robert B. Cameron and Dr. Raymond Wong, and their collaborators, authored two published scientific papers on the

growing potential of mesenchymal stem cells for anti-cancer immunotherapy. In their reports, they explore recent studies on immunotherapy for cancer, including innovative immunotherapy approaches, that our scientists are investigating in our laboratory facilities at the PHLBI. Research on mesenchymal stem cells and immunotherapy for cancer is rapidly growing, and our Institute is a pioneer in this field. We can only continue to make advances by moving well-designed evidence based experimental treatments from ‘the bench to the bedside’. Doing this, however, requires sufficient funding. Scientific research is an arduous and time-consuming process that can never be rushed. We have made significant strides in the last few years, successfully translating our hypothesis about the anticancer benefits of mesenchymal stem cells into working scientific research, but there is much left to do. We are now closer than ever to expanding our laboratory studies that can pave the way for next-generation clinical trials, but this costs money. To ensure that we can continue and expand our work, we are establishing, over the next 5 years, an endowment fund to support our current and emerging programs, including molecular genetic, immunologic, and stem cell/regenerative medical translational

research on mesothelioma and various other cancers. Generous individual, corporate, or other charitable benefactors of our Endowment Fund will be invited to participate in a special ceremony for officially naming our new and expanded laboratory as well as other project workplaces and a distinguished chair and endowments for young researchers and other research fellows within the PHLBI. As we move forward in 2016, I am excited about what the PMC has achieved and I am excited about the future. I hope that you will join me in doing everything we can to support the continued growth of this extraordinary organization. I can’t think of an organization that deserves it more! And please, if you are in town, come by the lab and get a tour. You too will be inspired!

Sincerely,

Rhonda Ozanian Board Chair

PA C I F I C B L O O D

ABOUT THE PHLBI ABOUT US Established in 2002, the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) is a 501 (c)(3)non-profit, research institution that is committed to advancing medical research that may lead to new treatments, early detection and prevention programs for chronic disorders— including diseases of the heart, lung and blood. Modeled on the National Heart, Lung & Blood Institutes of the NIH, PHLBI is divided into divisions and centers: • Pacific Heart • Pacific Lung • Pacific Mesothelioma Center • Pacific Thymus Center • Pacific Blood One of the divisions of PHLBI is The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) whose focus is on finding better treatments for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), an asbestos-related cancer affecting the lining of the chest - the pleura. The PMC’s mission is to better serve

a growing number of mesothelioma victims by supporting the first-of-its-kind and only in-house lab. in the nation and through providing hard-to-find information such as patient support networks and treatment roadmaps. Another division of PHLBI is The Pacific Thymus Center which is dedicated to researching effective treatments for cancer of the thymus. There are two types of cancer of the thymus, thymomas and thymic carcinomas. Both types of thymus cancer involve epithelial tumors.

VISION We believe our values of honesty, integrity and heartfelt concern allows PMC to be one of the few places that is a beacon for those lost in the confusion of chest diseases. We reach out to our patients and family members to support PHLBI, as they clearly understand what is at stake; and we believe that by giving back to the community they will help future patients fighting these diseases.

After my husband passed away in 2011 from Mesothelioma, I decided that I needed to find a nonprofit that was dedicated to finding a cure for this "ghost" cancer. After the passing of my husband, I prayed and researched on the internet for a non-profit that was dedicated to cutting edge research and the development of additional modalities that would make a difference. I wanted to make a difference and support them. PHLBI not only does research to extend a patient's life, but are working towards finding ways of early detection and prevention. The staff are dedicated to the cause, and to the lives of the people that they touch. There is hope for others who suffer from this deadly cancer, but ongoing research, and funding, is needed. One day their research and breakthroughs may save your loved one. I believe a cure will be found. Rosemary Stirdivant

RESEARCH WORK

Dr. Robert B. Cameron, MD FACS, is one of the leading experts in North America on the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. He has been treating mesothelioma patients for over 20 years & is an early innovator of the lung-sparing Pleurectomy / Decortication surgical procedure for mesothelioma. He has authored or co-authored over 40 papers on oncology, thoracic surgery & other topics. Dr. Cameron attended medical school at the University of Michigan & UCLA, where he obtained his medical degree. He completed 3 years of training as a clinical associate in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, a five-year residency in general surgery at UCLA, & a two-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Cornell-New York Hospital & Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. 9

The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute’s (PHLBI) strategy is to become the most innovative research and treatment organization in the world for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma by supporting the first-of-its-kind non-profit in-house focused research laboratory. The goal of the laboratory is to provide laboratory-to-the-bedside research to improve the lives and longevity of those diagnosed with mesothelioma and treating MPM as a chronic, treatable and manageable disease. The exploration of innovative ideas forms the foundation of the PMC’s unique research program and provides the promise of future treatment breakthroughs. An overarching tenet of PHLBI’s research agenda is that all projects should be rational and additive; that is, all treatment approaches must be researched, be carefully thought out, be based on available data, provide improved quality of life, be continuously critiqued and re-evaluated, and should be built upon known information and treatment successes, however small. CURRENT RESEARCH Mesenchymal Stem Cell Research: Today, one of the more promising next-generation immunotherapies for cancer is mesenchymal stem cell treatment. The

Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute 2015 Annual Report

in-house research program at the Pacific Mesothelioma Center is presently developing new mesenchymal stem cell-based treatments modeled on recent clinical breakthroughs in combination immunotherapy for cancer. Mesenchymal stem cells are readily harvested from donated bone marrow, full term placentas, umbilical cord blood, and fat tissue. These cells have been utilized in experimental treatments of inflammatory disorders and for regenerative medicine in humans. In clinical trials, mesenchymal stem cells have been shown generally to be safe to use in therapies for humans. These cells appear to be a useful vector for delivering anti-cancer agents directly to malignant tumors in cancer patients in the clinic. However, additional laboratory research is needed to determine exactly how mesenchymal stem cells can be transformed into a carrier that synergistically increases the immune-boosting properties of various other immunotherapies. In collaboration with our scientific partners at the UCLA Comprehensive Mesothelioma Program and the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, our in-house research program is attempting to solve this scientific enigma. We are rigorously testing novel prototypes of mesenchymal stem cell therapies engineered to enhance immune responses against cancer. The long-term goal of the PMC is to develop a wide array of mesenchymal stem cell treatments that can be scaled up for immunotherapy to

RESEARCH WORK fight a host of cancers. We anticipate that someday it might be feasible to use our products in treating solid tumors, such as breast, pancreatic, and colon cancer, as well as diffuse cancers such as mesothelioma and large B cell lymphoma.

and rare cancers of the chest. In order to perform these studies, PHLBI requires tissue specimens. PHLBI are seeking study participants who wish to donate their tissue specimen(s) and personal health information for current and future research at PHLBI.

INTERNATIONAL TISSUE BANK Raymond Wong, PhD, and associates from The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) are conducting research studies to determine the medical characteristics of patients who develop thoracic malignancies, such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, esophogeal cancer, and thymic tumors. Diseases of the heart, lung and blood affect a large number of people in the U.S. and throughout the world each year. Due to the large number of people involved, it is imperative that both personal health information and tissue samples are collected from as many patients as possible in order to understand 1) the normal biology, 2) the natural history of diseases, 3) outcomes from current treatments, 4) the advantages and disadvantages of potential future novel therapies. It is important to compare both the health information and tissue samples of study participants who have diseases of heart, lung, and blood as well as of normal volunteers; therefore, both normal clinical and tissue samples are collected. The primary objective of these studies is to explore the possible uses of mesenchymal stem cells in the treatment of common

MESOTHELIOMA PREVENTION Perhaps the most promising area of mesothelioma research, like many diseases, is in the area of prevention. It is far simpler to stop cancer from happening rather than to stop it once it has already happened. PMC is committed to developing a cancer prevention program that will investigate the cellular and molecular changes that occur over the relatively long 15-40+ years that it takes mesothelioma to develop following asbestos exposure. Many people do know they have been exposed and during this time, simple therapies, perhaps as simple as a daily aspirin, may actually stop the changes that lead to cancer. Dr. Raymond Wong received his PhD from the University of Southern California’s department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. He also earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California. He joined the Pacific Mesothelioma Center after serving as a research scientist at MannKind Corporation, where he supported the advancement of therapeutic cancer vaccines from pre-clinical stages to Phase I/II clinical trials. Dr. Wong has more than a decade of experience in the research and development of novel immunotherapy strategies to improve the medical outcome of life-threatening diseases. @PHD4meso

What makes the Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at The Pacifc Heart Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) different? We are the only research center dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma through our own research programs and patient care. Through this combination, we make research advances for tomorrow in tandem with providing for today’s needs of newly diagnosed and current patients. To the best of our knowledge, the PMC is the only research organization in the United States, perhaps the world, conducting mesenchymal stem cell research with the express purpose of discovering therapies and even cures for mesothelioma.

The board of directors and staff continually tries to run the PHLBI in the most transparent and cost-efficient ways possible. Decisions are made about every dollar, and where it can make the most difference. Our fundraising expenses are 2.7% of our expenses and it costs $11 to raise $100 (Benchmark for highly efficient charity $25 or less per Charity Watch). Our efforts have been noticed, PHLBI has been recognized by a number of not-forprofit rating organizations as a “best-inclass” organization.

GREAT NONPROFITS TOP-RATED AWARDS

GUIDESTAR EXCHANGE GOLD LEVEL

In 2015 PHLBI earned the prestigious Great Nonprofits Top-Rated Award. This award is a “people’s choice” award that is awarded based on reviews of the people that we serve, our volunteers and donors. www.toprated.greatnonprofits.org/

In order to earn the Gold level designation, PHLBI participates with Guidestar to provide additional transparency to financial statements and operational details. The PHLBI believes that sharing governance, leadership and financial impact information is vital for donors to understand and support our mission. www.guidestar.org

I have volunteered for a few PHLBI events. Having volunteered for many, many organizations for the past 25 years, I can say that PHLBI is one of the best organizations to volunteer for--there is just so much heart in everything they do! Unlike those experiences you have when you know you are just a number on a volunteer list, PHLBI really stands out by personalizing their communication with you, making it a point to know your name, and showing sincere appreciation for your contribution that would turn the head of even Dale Carnegie. This is the type of treatment you want as a volunteer--knowing that you aren’t just disposable free labor invited out to do the work the employees don’t want to do. Nope, with PHLBI, you are invited to help them do the work they are doing right alongside you. As a volunteer, you are treated just like a donor or sponsor--a relationship is being cultivated with care for the long run. What else can you ask for? To me, that kind of attention is worth far more than a rough cotton t-shirt! Rebecca - Volunteer

STAFF SPOTLIGHT

The PHLBI commitment to patient care and treatment can be seen in the work of Nurse Practitioner Lien Hua-Feng. Through our partnership with Department of Veterans Affairs, Nurse Hua-Feng meets with veterans, and their families, to discuss clinical care options and treatment modalities. Nurse Hua-Feng is also a vital resource to thousands of people, from all walks of life and all parts of the country, answering questions on treatment and support available. There are very few professionals like her working in the field of Mesothelioma research and care delivery. Because Mesothelioma is rare, there are very few experienced medical staff and patient care resources available. PHLBI is working to expand our dedicated staff. However, we cannot do this without more sources of funding. Hiring more experienced and dedicated nurses like Lien is something we are working towards! 13

Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute 2015 Annual Report

Did you know? Mesothelioma is rare, so rare that only 2,000 - 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. This makes support difficult to find for patients. PHLBI is dedicated to finding a cure and treatment options for Mesothelioma and other diseases of the heart, lungs and blood. Until that cure is found, PHLBI is also working to find innovative ways to help patients with these disorders find support and information on treatment options. The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart Lung and Blood Institute (PHLBI) works to improve the quantity and quality of mesothelioma patient’s lives through superior educational, networking and treatment options. Mesothelioma presents a one-two punch for those diagnosed. First, it is an extremely deadly cancer that must be treated swiftly. Second, it is a rare cancer, making specialists, treatment and information hard to find. The PMC has developed 3 initiatives to help patients navigate this new world.

...working to find innovative ways to help patients with these disorders find support and information...

A F O C U S O N PAT I E N T S FIRST CONNECTION PROGRAM This program puts newly diagnosed patients in touch with other patients, survivors and families to share experiences. New patients can get a firsthand perspective from another patient on how they reached their decisions, why they chose one treatment plan or doctor over another and, most importantly, explain what to expect while undergoing treatment in terms of side effects and recovery time

MESOTHELIOMA: A PATIENT’S ROADMAP A resource that takes patients through the mesothelioma diagnoses through treatment providing important answers in one place.

PATIENT SUPPORT GROUP New in 2016. Patients requested support beyond the First Connections program, so the PMC developed an ongoing support group for patients and their caregivers. The group meets once a month with a trained facilitator and provides a space for patients to connect as a group and to provide support to each other.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Drawing from her personal experience with mesothelioma, Rosemarie Ganoe has become a champion for the Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) by helping to fundraise for research and supporting every fundraising event. “I want to help get the PMC’s name out there. If more people were aware of the PMC then they could eliminate going anywhere else, and patients could receive vital information and treatment much sooner.” In addition to raising awareness Rosemarie also helps raise funds for PMC, and on one occasion she hosted a “Make Your Mark For Meso” Casino Night, which raised $75,000 for mesothelioma research. Since then, she has provided numerous prizes for events from her jewelry store, Captain’s Treasure Chest in Rancho Palos Verdes, and forms Team Mark Ganoe each year for the 5K Walk/Hike for Mesothelioma in memory of her beloved husband, Mark. Although Rosemarie knows what it’s like to lose someone to mesothelioma, she says she has not given up hope for a cure— and you shouldn’t either. “I pray a lot for a cure. Every year since Mark passed away, there are more developments. You look at some of the fatal diseases from 20 years ago and they are now curable. Never lose hope.” Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute 2015 Annual Report

3RD GREATEST ESCAPE MOTORCYCLE RIDE

The people at the Pacific Heart, Lung and Blood Institute have helped us through this difficult time. After, my husband was diagnosed with Mesothelioma, the search began for cause, answers, treatment and most of all, hope. We found that the researchers and interns work tirelessly to provide patients everything that we needed. Beyond the expert medical care, the emotional support for patients and family is invaluable and heart warming. Their research provided us with answers and treatment. We no longer feel helpless as these people have guided us through the maze of information, provided support and care and continue to update the treatment plan as more research provides more answers and more positive outcomes.
