ANNUAL REPORT

LEADERSHIP MESSAGE 2016 was a banner year for the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) and I’m excited to highlight our progress and milestones in this letter to you. Today, mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) treatment is one of the most impressive immunotherapies for the potential eradication of cancer. Our research aims to benefit the mesothelioma patient community through the development and advancement of innovative immunotherapy to clinical trials, with a long-term goal of scaling a wide array of treatments to fight a range of different cancers. On this front, PHLBI, has been developing a next generation therapy platform using gene-modified mesenchymal stem cells derived from placentas. These cells are modified to express large amounts of interleukin 12, which stimulates the immune system to reject cancer cells. We are thrilled to report that we now have enough preliminary

evidence to file a patent in the summer of 2017. In 2016, we received approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to create a first-in-the-nation International Tissue Bank. PHLBI developed the protocols for processing, storing and tracking specimens for the tissue bank, with the goal of benefitting our research. As this is also the first tissue bank that is unlimited, we will be able to share tissue from all types of patients with other institutions, and already have an agreement in place to do so with UCLA. If you’re interested in contributing to this invaluable medical resource by donating a sample, please call our office. In addition to becoming an “associate researcher” at PHLBI, you’ll join a growing community of contributors to this important research! As a small nonprofit with limited resources, the PHLBI relies on philanthropic support

Beyond fundraisers and grants, we continue to honor and support those struggling in the fight against mesothelioma, as well as their families. In February 2016, we launched our Mesothelioma Caregivers Support group, which meets monthly to address the needs of family members and loved ones of mesothelioma patients as they adjust to a new reality. Each day, we are buoyed by the innovative research and incredible lives of the patients and families that are the bedrock of the PHLBI. With you by our side, we hope

to fulfill our dream of finding a cure for mesothelioma and other life-threatening cancers. Your charitable contributions are most welcome and appreciated. And if you are in town, please stop by our lab for a tour. Thank you for your commitment to PHLBI over the years and for your renewed generosity.

With gratitude,

Rhonda Ozanian Board Chair

from generous individual, corporate, and other charitable benefactors, as well as a full program of fundraisers to develop and research new treatment approaches for breakthroughs. I’m pleased to report that in 2016 we exceeded our fundraising goals, raising almost $850,000 thanks to the generosity of our donors, fundraisers and several grants that were awarded. In the past, donors have offered to sponsor our matching gift program for contributions up to $100,000. So, if you’ve been considering making a donation or endowment, please know that your gift can potentially enable us to research and develop solutions twice as fast!

The mission of the PHLBI is to rapidly develop early-stage research (highly innovative, novel, untested ideas) into effective treatments. The PMC’s mission is to better serve a growing number of mesothelioma victims by supporting the first-of-its-kind and only in-house lab in the nation and by providing hard-to-find resources such as patient support networks and treatment roadmaps.

• Pacific Mesothelioma Center • Pacific Thymus Center

VISION

• Pacific Blood

The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) is focused on finding better treatments for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM), an asbestos-related cancer affecting the pleura, or lining of the chest. The Pacific Thymus Center is dedicated to researching effective treatments for cancer of the thymus, of which there are two types: thymomas and thymic carcinomas. Both types of thymus cancer involve epithelial tumors.

Our values of honesty, integrity and heartfelt concern underpin the PHLBI’s vision to be a beacon for those lost in the confusion of chest diseases. Our patients and family members are key stakeholders for the PHLBI, and we believe that by educating and giving back to the community, we can join forces to help future patients fighting these diseases.

SPOTLIGHT Clare Cameron is the executive director of The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute. Since joining the institute in 2011, she has guided and grown the institute’s revenue through events such as the International Symposium, the Greatest Escape Motorcycle Ride and the 5K Walk/Hike for Mesothelioma. Educated in Zimbabwe, Clare spent her early twenties working in advertising and television production in London. She produced a BBC2 award-winning documentary called “Eve Strikes Back,” and co-authored a book on the same subject. She was the first female manager of the National Cycle League of America, and it was

her experience here that led her to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she worked for a decade. As a Senior Director, she raised a record-setting $1.16 million in pennies one year, while in charge of the School & Youth program in Los Angeles. Clare first met Dr. Robert B. Cameron when she was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2003. He had operated on her twice, when at her annual checkup in 2011, he mentioned that a small institute called The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute was looking for somebody just like her to move them to their next phase of development. That was seven years ago, and Clare remains happy and honored to be in a position to meet the incredible patients and families that she interacts with daily.

MISSION

9

Established in 2002, the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, research institution committed to advancing medical research that may lead to new treatments, early detection and prevention programs for chronic disorders—including diseases of the heart, lung and blood.

RESEARCH WORK RESEARCHER SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Robert B. Cameron, MD FACS, is one of the leading experts in North America on the treatment of pleural mesothelioma. He has been treating mesothelioma patients for over 20 years and is an early innovator of the lung-sparing pleurectomy with decortication (P/D) surgical procedure for mesothelioma. He has authored or co-authored over 40 papers on oncology, thoracic surgery and other topics. Dr. Cameron attended medical school at UCLA, where he obtained his medical degree. He completed three years of training as a clinical associate in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, a five-year residency in general surgery at UCLA, and a two-year fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Cornell-New York Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.

The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute’s (PHLBI) aims to be the most innovative research and treatment organization in the world for patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). It does so by supporting a first-of-its-kind, nonprofit, in-house research laboratory, whose goal is to provide laboratory-to-bedside research that improves the lives and longevity of those diagnosed with mesothelioma, and treats MPM as a chronic, treatable and manageable disease. The exploration of innovative ideas is the foundation of the PMC’s unique research program. An overarching tenet of PHLBI’s research agenda is that all projects should be rational and additive; that is, all treatment approaches must be researched, be carefully thought out, be based on available data, provide improved quality of life, be continuously critiqued and re-evaluated, and be built upon known information and treatment successes, however small.

CURRENT RESEARCH In 2016, PHLBI developed a prototype cancer immunotherapy composed of genetically engineered human mesenchymal stem cells producing interleukin-12, a potent cytokine that enhanced human T cells in studies conducted at the PMC lab. A provisional patent application was filed in June 2016 to explore intellectual property opportunities covering the work. The full patent application will be finalized and submitted to the US Patent and Trademark Office Legal Administration (US and international applications simultaneously) in June 2017.

INTERNATIONAL TISSUE BANK The PHLBI received Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval in 2016 for its international tissue bank. Diseases of the heart, lung and blood affect a large number of people in the U.S. and throughout the world each year. It is imperative that both personal health information and tissue samples are collected from as many patients as possible in order to understand: 1. The normal tissue biology 2. The natural history of the disease 3. Outcomes from current treatments 4. The advantages and disadvantages of potential future novel therapies PHLBI is soliciting tissue specimens and seeks study participants who wish to donate their tissue and personal health information for current and future research at the institute. If you’d like to assist PHLBI by donating urine or blood, please call our offices at 310.478.4678 to set up an appointment, or ask your doctor to take a sample that can be shipped overnight to us.

RESEARCHER SPOTLIGHT

Nurse Practitioner Lien Hua-Feng embodies PHLBI’s commitment to patient care and treatment in her work. Through our partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs, Nurse Lien meets with veterans and their families to discuss clinical care options and treatment modalities. She is a vital resource to thousands of people, from all walks of life and all parts of the country, answering questions on available treatment and support. Because mesothelioma is rare, there are very few experienced medical staff like Nurse Lien, and patient care resources are limited. PHLBI is working to expand our dedicated staff but we cannot do this without more sources of funding. Hiring experienced and dedicated nurses like Nurse Lien is something we are working towards!

The board of directors and staff of PHLBI continually strives to run the institute in the most transparent and cost-efficient ways possible. Every dollar is directed to where it can make the most difference. Our fundraising expenses are 2.7% of our expenses, and it costs us $11 to raise $100. (The benchmark for highly efficient charities to raise $100 is $25 or less according to Charity Watch).

What makes the Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at The Pacific Heart Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) different? We’re the only research center dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma through our own research programs and patient care. This enables us to make research advances for tomorrow in tandem with providing care for newly diagnosed and current patients. To the best of our knowledge, the PMC is the only research organization in the United States—perhaps the world—conducting mesenchymal stem cell research with the express purpose of discovering therapies and even cures for mesothelioma.

ANNUAL REPORT

A FOCUS ON PATIENTS Did you know? Mesothelioma is so rare that only 2,000 - 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Mesothelioma presents a one-two punch for those diagnosed. First, it is an extremely deadly cancer that must be treated swiftly. Second, as a rare cancer, information, specialists, treatment and support are especially hard to find. PHLBI is dedicated to finding a cure and treatment options for mesothelioma and other diseases of the heart, lungs and blood. Until that cure is found, PHLBI is also seeking innovative ways to help patients with these disorders find support and information on treatment options. The Pacific Mesothelioma Center (PMC) at the Pacific Heart Lung and Blood Institute (PHLBI) aims to improve the length and quality of mesothelioma patients’ lives through superior educational, networking and treatment options. The PMC has three initiatives to help patients navigate this new world.

FIRST CONNECTION PROGRAM This program puts newly diagnosed patients in touch with other patients, survivors and families to share experiences. New patients gain a first-hand perspective from other patients on how they reached their decisions, why they chose one treatment plan or doctor over another and, most importantly, what to expect while undergoing treatment, in terms of side effects and recovery time. MESOTHELIOMA: A PATIENT’S ROADMAP This resource helps patients navigate the many roads before them on their journey from proper diagnosis, to treatment and coping, providing important answers in one place. PATIENT AND CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP Patients requested support beyond the First Connection program, so the PMC developed an ongoing support group for patients and their caregivers. The group meets once a month with a trained facilitator, and provides a space for patients to connect as a group and provide support to one another.

Life with my beautiful wife and children were going fine, until January 2010, when I got pneumonia and underwent three months of treatment with no improvement. A pulmonologist told me that he expected it was mesothelioma, and biopsies confirmed this. I was told to get chemo if I wanted to live for another 6 months. My wife was so afraid, as she’d lost her father and brother to lung cancer. We knew that we had to find the best treatment out there and that there had to be something more than just chemotherapy. By researching online, my daughter came across Dr. Robert B. Cameron at UCLA, who was renowned for his work as a mesothelioma surgical oncologist. We saw Dr. Cameron in

Five years ago, we attended PHLBI’s symposium and discovered a ton of information. I know there have been more great strides in meso research since then, so we plan to attend this year’s symposium. I believe that some day there will be a way to find meso early and that there will be better treatments. I am so thankful for all the support and prayers from friends and family. And I thank Dr. Cameron and everyone on his support team—Martha, Clare, Lien and the researchers—as well as the individuals at the St. James Inn—for they have given me back all this time with my wife and family.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT:

SONIA JARVIS BAYEK

CHRISTINA MCSHERRY

When Sonia Jarvis Bayek lost her father, Chuck Jarvis, to mesothelioma in 2012, she vowed to do whatever she could for the next person fighting the disease. Her strength and conviction were drawn from the lessons her father taught her and her brother at a young age. One such lesson was to contribute to society and help others wherever and whenever possible. Sonia has taken this advice to heart in her quest to raise funds for mesothelioma research and to educate those around her about the disease. Each year Sonia organizes Team Chuck Jarvis for the 5K Walk for Mesothelioma, and has earned the “Top Fundraising Team” accolade for the past two years. She also raises money by hosting events like the annual Chuck Jarvis Pasta Dinner, and an annual garage sale. In addition, Sonia serves as an organizer of the PMC Caregivers Support Group, offering prayer and comfort to those who are going through the most difficult time of their lives. She honors her father and keeps his memory alive by living her life the way he would have lived his today—by helping others.

As PHLBI’s Marketing Coordinator, Christina strives to increase the institute’s engagement with the mesothelioma community. This includes broadening the organization’s social media presence, creating new and relevant content for its blog, and communicating and engaging supporters through both email and post. By organizing events such as the Valentine’s Day Blood Drive, she not only introduces the institute to a larger audience, but also promotes the innovative research done at PHLBI. She stays connected with the mesothelioma community through her role as coordinator of the PMC Caregivers Support Group, something that has allowed her to see firsthand the devastation that mesothelioma has on families, and the positive impact of community support. It is her hope that with a higher profile and consequent greater funding, the PHLBI can fulfill its goal of developing treatments that extend mesothelioma patients’ lives

I was born one of six boys in 1945 to a hard-working, farming family that raised the best potatoes in the county. At 17, I went to work as a smelter and over the years, became a master craftsman of many trades--including millwright, welding, plumbing, electrical, rigging, carpentry, metallizing, dynamic balancing and mechanics. I remodeled four homes and built three. I’ve owned, repaired or sold about 300 cars. I’ve been exposed to asbestos throughout my life because of my work and hobbies.

August 2010 and he said he could give me back my quality of life and give me more time with his lung-sparing surgery, pleurectomy decortication. At the time, I thought I had been shot with a gun and it had taken 48 years to kill me. Mesothelioma is so sneaky. It takes years to develop. That was seven years ago, and I’ve had various ablation treatments since then to keep my meso in check.
