UCSI University

Synonymous with graduate employability and industry relevance, UCSI is a leading comprehensive private university in Malaysia, which contributes to the pursuit and expansion of knowledge. Anchored on a 30-year track record, UCSI offers over 100 programmes in the fields of architecture, medicine, pharmacy, engineering, applied sciences, business, IT, social sciences, music, tourism management, creative arts and design at its campuses in the Malaysian states of Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak (Kuching) and Terengganu (Kuala Terengganu). This diversity has propelled UCSI to Tier 5 – the highest rating accorded to universities in Malaysia – in the Rating System for Malaysia Higher Education Institutions last held in 2013. This puts UCSI in the same category as the nation’s venerable research universities, as well as foreign branch campuses like Nottingham and Monash. On the international front, UCSI is ranked among the top 300 in the QS Asian University Rankings in 2015. The University’s strong reputation in teaching and learning is increasingly complemented by its solid research output. Staff and students contribute to this effort and UCSI’s top medical and engineering students have been selected to pursue intercalated research programmes at Harvard and Imperial College London, respectively. Internationalisation is another core focus. UCSI collaborates with leading universities in the Ivy League, Russell Group, Universitas 21 and Australia’s Group of Eight. Synonymous with graduate employability, UCSI partners with more than 3,500 global companies to provide students with internships and job opportunities through its flagship Co-Operative Placement Programme. UCSI students go on internship for at least two months each year.

SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Coverage UCSI is one of only 12 accredited universities in Malaysia that provide Architecture studies and programmes. It also has the distinction of being one of the five private universities in this list. The School is helmed by professors and lecturers who are often sought after externally for their roles as authors and architectural consultants for both international and national projects. This bridge between industry and academia equips the School of Architecture and Built Environment students with the edge they need to shine in their studies and future careers. UCSI students make a name for themselves even during the undergraduate years by winning local and international design competitions. With a focus on internationalization, the School has seen a spike in global demand for its programmes and work is already underway to export UCSI’s architectural programmes overseas, with Mauritius already lined up for this collaboration.

Our Strength

INTERNATIONAL MASTER CLASS – EXPERIENCING ARCHITECTURE Place-based Learning Embracing place-based learning as a strategy that enhances students' experience and advances environmental concerns.

Professional mentorship Earning experience that exceeds the expectation and getting a rare and indelible opportunity to participate in something truly remarkable.

International Exposure Attain global perspective and broadened academic and personal horizons through international collaboration.

Introduction The international master class is a special program that offers students an opportunity to work alongside a guest instructor of international standing (master architect) who has demonstrated both a high degree of recognised design excellence and a strongly articulated position in research and practice within the field. The programme focuses on an intensive design workshop presented and curated by an invited guest architect; it offers students an opportunity to develop particular skills relevant to the research interests of the guest instructor. The programme is parked under the optional subject Experiencing Architecture, which is offered to final year students with moderate or good analytical and planning skills as well as the ability to present to the general public with greater fluency and accuracy of language. 2015-2016 (1st Master Class) Kuala Sepetang Field School

Supervising Lecturer: Asst.Prof. Teoh Chee Keong Visiting Professor: Prof. At. Huang and Dr.Ar. Eric Chen

Kuala Sepetang Field School is a double storey timber shop-house located at Seberang Kuala Sepetang, a rural fishing village about 16km away from Taiping. Since 2009, the Landscape Architecture Department at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) and School of Architecture and Built Environment at UCSIU have collaborated on a field research series designed to highlight the environmental concerns as well as to promote the idea of sustainable living to the residents. In 2013, CYCU and UCSIU have signed a memorandum of understanding to further strengthen the collaboration. Both universities have agreed to set up an off-campus research and teaching facility for the benefits of the staffs and students, also for the people living around. The field school will host a variety of desirable uses, including a children learning center with a small library, a research space for CYCU and UCSIU students to enhance their learning outside of the classroom by providing more first-hand experiences. The upstairs will be used as accommodation for up to 15 people with basic living facilities.

ACADEMIC OVERVIEW

PAGE 52

Year 1

PRECEDENT STUDY

TO LIVE IN AN INVISIBLE CITY The imaginative potentialities of cities, have been used by architects and artists to visualise how cities can be, their secret folds, where the human imagination is not necessarily limited by the laws of physics or the limitations of modern urban theory. It offers an alternative approach to thinking about cities, how they are formed and how they function. Dwellings here are designed in line with the chosen city that could only be appreciated in mind.
