NOTES Rossini’s Une Larme Pour Basse (A Tear For Bass) is a strikingly tuneful work originally written for an instrument not commonly known for its melodic output, the double bass. While percussionists spend endless hours developing techniques that often stress speed and independence, the ability to shape lyrical phrases is also tantamount to being a great player. In Teardrop for vibraphone and piano, the vibraphone’s magical bell-like quality lends the opportunity to do just that–shape the melody. Pedaling, mallet dampening, and motor choices are left to the discretion of the performer. After all, it’s your voice.
