PROGRAM NOTES

Composed in 2023 for mallet ensemble, hand percussion, and drumset, Sin Fronteras explores rhythmically complex themes using jazz harmony as well as sections of improvisation by several members of the group. It relies heavily on odd time signatures and modern Latin rhythms, which gives it a modern jazz-fusion character.

Sin Fronteras was written for and is dedicated to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte percussion ensemble in 2023.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The vibraphone part calls for some basic improvisation. Pedaling is indicated using slurs and staccatos.

The drumset part leaves lots of room for improvisation. The player may want to use bundle rods so as not to be too loud and should be well versed in Latin rhythms on the kit.

The bongos should be played in a traditional sitting manner with wood pods and shaker nearby.

The cajon should not use snares and should be played in the traditional sitting manner.

CONFIGURATION OPTIONS

Sin Fronteras can be performed in several configurations:

1. Mallet ensemble with bongo and cajon parts only.

2. Mallet ensemble with drumset only (minus the bongo and cajon parts).

3. All players, all parts.

4. If an extra player and instrument are available, the bass marimba part (Marimba 3) can be doubled.

The percussion solo section at letter J as well as any other solo fills specified throughout the piece may be altered as needed based on the chosen configuration.
