PROGRAM NOTES
Having been a Texas resident for several years now, one of the many things I’ve come to love about the state is its wide array of beautiful wild foliage. Even the most remote and desolate Texas roads are lined with an extraordinary variety of stunning cacti and wildflowers. Rachel Woolf, the flutist for Duo AYA, is an avid gardener and a lover of all things flower-related. When we discussed the creation of a piece for her and Makana Jimbu, I knew that I wanted to incorporate flowers and nature into the work. Wildflowers is a series of short vignettes, each representing the physical qualities of Texas wildflowers as well as the vibrant personalities of both Rachel and Makana.
I would like to thank Rachel and Makana for their friendship, dedication to new music, and insightful feedback throughout the process of writing this work. It is an honor to collaborate with such dedicated and kind people.
